DOES IT HAVE TO BE NORTH VS. SOUTH?

I’ve put of writing this editorial as long as I can. I’ve played with the dog, sorted through the mail, even sat while my wife described her mother’s latest ailments. Te deadline to turn this in is tomorrow, and the truth is that it’s difcult to write.

Te truth is that California racing is in midst of a crisis, and how we manage it could ultimately determine our very existence. Te truth is that careers and livelihoods are at risk. Te truth is that there is an internal rift in California horse racing, with emotions high and trust low. And the truth that makes this piece so difcult to write is that I don’t have the answer. I can’t even write what I think the solution is.

But as I agonized over what I was going to say to an industry full of passionate, dedicated people and a sport that I love, I received a call that a dear friend had just passed away. And then, as I set down to meet the deadline still processing that devastating news, my 75-pound mutt Miles decided that it was a good time to play and started running around my desk, unplugging my computer, and generally making a mess—and still wanting to play. I stopped and sat for a bit, thinking that maybe the concept of perspective was tapping me on the shoulder. And so, I will try.

As most of you have probably read, the esteemed John Harris and I, along with trainer Andy Mathis, agreed to replace the three Northern California TOC directors who resigned in protest. Te situation best came through to me when I saw a headline to the efect that we three were joining a “Fractured Board.” Te question I’m most often asked is why? Why do you want to get involved when, no matter what you

do, about half of your “constituents” are going to be angry? I don’t have an answer other than I have loved California racing, both North and South, for more than 50 years and fnd it heartbreaking to see battle lines forming between the North and South and am naïve enough to think that maybe I can somehow help to reach a resolution.

Obviously, I enter the fray with some resolution and some opinions. One resolution was that, while being aware of the issues that resulted in the prior directors resigning, I am going to look forward and with an open mind. What I have found, after much study and discussion, is that the regulatory/fnancial scheme underlying California racing is complex and possibly somewhat lacking. I have also found that, while a considerable number of folks on either side are frmly entrenched in their positions, no one bases their position on malice.

Te problem is that there is a limited pie, with various groups staking a good faith claim to their slice, but each feeling that the slice they have is too small. Tis is nothing new, as I ran across a speech given by John Van de Kamp in the mid-1990s.

In that speech, Mr. Van de Kamp sets out the problems facing racing. Tat speech could be given today because the issues are the same: Tere was and remains ever-increasing competition for the gambling dollar in California, and we must fnd a way to grow the pie signifcantly. To my mind, that requires a united effort from all California horsemen, which makes the current situation all the sadder.

I mentioned that I entered the fray with not only resolution but opinions. One of those opinions, which I believe is shared

by my fellow CTBA board members, is that maintaining racing in California as a whole is vital for the health of our breeding industry. One of my strong opinions, which I have been trying to share with others on the TOC, is the devastating effect losing racing in the North will have on the California breeding industry, particularly the smaller breeders. I’m also consistently and strongly sharing my belief that the resulting loss of breeding will have a devastating efect on the already critical size of felds in Southern California. Not everyone agrees, but I, along with John and Andy, are committed to making sure the contribution of Cal-breds is considered when any decisions are made.

And now I fnd perspective still tapping me on the shoulder and telling me that despite the complex regulatory underpinnings of racing, the real problem is quite simple and straightforward. We simply must fnd ways to make the pie grow. Rather than fghting each other over what may become scraps, all California horsemen must work together to create additional revenue. Te perspective isn’t that this is a winner-take-all situation. In my opinion, if there is a winner, victory will be short-lived. My perspective is that we all win, or we all lose and that the failure to maintain that perspective may well ultimately be our downfall.

I want to close by making it very clear that I agreed to join theTOC in large part to do what I can to protect the California breeding industry, including small breeders like me. Cal-breds have kept California racing viable for the past decade or so. California breeding and racing in California go hand-in-hand. We forget that at our peril.

BRICKYARD RIDE RETIRED

Brickyard Ride, a talented multiple stakes-winning California-bred sprinter, has been retired from racing. Trainer Craig Lewis reported that the 7-year-old horse didn’t come out of a Jan. 25 work “as well as he usually does,” and the decision was made to retire him.

“Father Time is catching up with him somewhat,” Lewis told BloodHorse. “He was just a very nice racehorse for us, and we wanted to do the right thing by him.”

Alfred (Sonny) Pais bred and raced Brickyard Ride, and Lewis trained him throughout his career. A son of Clubhouse Ride, also trained by Lewis, Brickyard Ride is out of the Southern Image mare Brickyard Helen.

Brickyard Ride started 31 times, beginning as a 2-year-old in

2019 and continuing through his fnal start in 2024, a second in the Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint. He had won that race twice before, in 2021 and 2022. Brickyard Ride captured a total of eight stakes during his career, including two editions of the Kona Gold Stakes (G3) and the 2021 San Carlos Stakes (G3), the latter by four lengths. Tough he raced mostly on dirt, he proved adept on the turf and won the 2022 Sensational Star Stakes on that surface. Brickyard Ride placed in six other stakes, four of them graded, and earned $925,477.

Lewis said that there were no immediate plans for Brickyard Ride’s next career and that “he’s going to get the rest of the year of.”

Son of California Chrome Wins in Dubai

Kabirkhan, a 4-yearold son of superstar California-bred California Chrome, won the Jan. 26 Al Maktoum Challenge-G1 at Meydan in Dubai. Looking eerily like his sire, with a large white blaze and plenty of chrome on his legs, Kabirkhan scored by four lengths in the 1,900-meter race.

Te victory gives Kabirkhan an automatic berth in the March 30 Dubai World Cup-G1. His sire famously won the World Cup in 2016 en route to record earnings of more than $14 million.

Kehner Toroughbreds bred Kabirkhan in Kentucky from the Castledale mare Little Emily. Mulholland Springs consigned Kabirkhan to the 2021 Keeneland September yearling sale, where Nadir Khassanov

purchased him for $12,000. Doug Watson is training Kabirkhan in Dubai.

Equibase lists Kabirkhan as having started twice in Dubai, winning both times for earnings of $635,548. However, a television station on YouTube about Kazakhstan reports that Kabirkhan has won 10 of 11 races, including three in Kazakhstan and fve in Russia.

SLOW DOWN ANDY RETIRED

California-bred millionaire Slow Down Andy, winner of the 2023 Awesome Again Stakes (G1), has been retired, trainer Doug O’Neill said Feb. 22. Paul and Zillah Reddam’s Reddam Racing bred and raced the 5-year-old horse.

Slow Down Andy had not raced since winning the Awesome Again. O’Neill said that he came out of his most recent work with a non-displaced sesamoid fracture.

“He was a dream to train—a class act who gave us 100% every morning,” O’Neill told BloodHorse.

Slow Down Andy is by Nyquist out of the Calbred Square Eddie mare Edwina E. In addition to the Awesome Again, he won the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2), Sunland Park Derby (G3), and Del Mar Derby (G2T) and amassed total earnings of $1,276,600.

IN Memoriam (CONT.)

Art Wilson

Art Wilson, veteran turf writer for the Southern California News Group, died Feb. 18 after a long battle with cancer. He was 71.

First introduced to horse racing by his father, Wilson had covered racing since the mid-1980s. He worked right up to his death, reporting on California-bred Big City Lights’ victory in the Palos Verdes Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita and writing a column on the late Toby Keith. The Southern California News Group is a consortium of newspapers that includes the Los Angeles Daily News, Pasadena Star-News, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, and Long Beach Independent.

Born Nov. 5, 1952, in Winchester, Mass., Wilson moved with his family at age 2 to Azusa and later settled in Glendora. He attended Citrus Community College and Cal Poly Pomona.

Deeply appreciative of racing’s history, Wilson would often seek out veteran trainers such as the late Mel Stute and Bruce Headley. Beyond racing, Wilson’s favorite baseball team was the Texas Rangers.

Wilson’s survivors include his brother Eddie, sister Deborah Wills (Charles), nephew Cody Wills, as well as cousins James Costa, Mark Costa, and Heather McAvoy.

Arturo Mares

Southern California-based exercise rider Arturo Mares died Feb. 1 from complications following a training accident Jan. 27 at Santa Anita. His mount stumbled while jogging, and Mares fractured his neck and sustained a severe neck injury.

The 65-year-old exercise rider had competed as a jockey at Caliente in Baja California in the mid-1970s and throughout the 1980s. He moved to California in 1988 and rode at Hollywood Park in 1989-90. His mounts included California-bred multiple stakes winner Little Barbarian. Mares had worked as an exercise rider at Del Mar, Hollywood Park, and Santa Anita.

One in Vermillion

Grade 1 stakes-winning California-bred One in Vermillion had to be euthanized in Arizona Feb. 2 due to laminitis. The 4-yearold colt had suffered a training injury in New Mexico last fall.

Bred by Richard Barton Enterprises, One in Vermillion was a son of Army Mule—Given Star, by Any Given Saturday. Jonathan Kalman bought the colt as a yearling for $26,000 at the 2021 Arizona Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association fall mixed sale.

Esteban Martinez trained One in Vermillion for Kalman, debuting the colt at Turf Paradise in 2022. One in Vermillion won that year’s Turf Paradise Open Spring Futurity and Lost in the Fog Juvenile Stakes.

In 2023 One in Vermillion started nine times, with four wins, two seconds, and a third. He won the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, Lazaro Barrera Stakes at Santa Anita, and Riley Allison Derby at Sunland Park for total earnings of $653,840.

One in Vermillion injured a fetlock during a workout at Zia Park in New Mexico and had been retired from racing. He had been entered in the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale to be sold as a stallion prospect, but developed laminitis in the foot opposite from the injury. Kalman sent him to Copper Ridge Equine in Phoenix, and while One in Vermillion initially improved, his condition ultimately deteriorated.

Just a few days after One in Vermillion’s death, it was announced as part of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association 2023 champions press release that he had been named Cal-bred champion 3-year-old male of last year. One in Vermillion will be honored in the April issue of California Thoroughbred along with the other divisional champions and the Horse of the Year. The Horse of the Year announcement will be made at the March 12 CTBA awards banquet.

THIS MONTH IN HISTORY

Jockey Irving Orozco scored the frst stakes victory of his career aboard California-bred TRIBAL SPY in the $100,500 Irish O’Brien Stakes at Santa Anita March 15, 2014. A 4-year-old daughter of Tribal Rule, Tribal Spy led throughout the race, down the Santa Anita hillside turf course of about 61⁄2 furlongs. She defeated the grade II-winning Kentucky-bred Ciao Bella Luna by a length in 1:12.59, with Calbred Dancingtothestars third. It was Tribal Spy’s frst stakes win as well, though she had placed in the 2013 Unzip Me Stakes and 2014 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint Stakes. In her next start, Tribal Spy captured the Las Cienegas Stakes (G3T), and during her career she earned a total of $314,174. Adam Kitchingman trained Tribal Spy for owner Triple B Farms. Gary Barber bred the flly from the Victory Gallop mare Victory Spy.

In the second-to-last start of his career, California-bred FREE HOUSE captured the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap (G1) March 6, 1999. Free House broke in the air at the start of the 11⁄4-mile race, but he quickly dueled for the early lead under jockey Chris McCarron. Free

House led at every call, though Dr. Fong battled him throughout much of the race and even got his head in front around the far turn. Free House stubbornly fought back and then rebuffed a late challenge from Event of the Year, winning by a half-length in 2:00.67. Free House’s old nemesis, even-money favorite Silver Charm, fnished third. Paco Gonzalez trained 5-year-old Free House (Smokester—Fountain Lake, by Vigors) for owner/ breeders Trudy McCaffery and John Toffan. Free House fnished his career by running second in that year’s Pimlico Special Handicap (G1) to champion Real Quiet and retired to stud with earnings of $3,178,971.

California-breds won both divisions of the Gold Rush Stakes for 3-year-olds at Golden Gate Fields March 30, 1974. GA HAI captured the frst division, and then STARDUST MEL took the second division. Ga Hai was winning his frst stakes, while Stardust Mel had won the Golden Bear Stakes two weeks before. Ga Hai defeated John Eric by a length while completing the mile in 1:393⁄5, with Confederate Yankee third, making for a Calbred trifecta. Dale Long rode the son of Determine—Goyala, by Goyamo, for trainer Gene Cleveland. Connie Bishop bred Ga Hai and Laguna Seca owned the colt. Stardust Mel, ridden by Juan Gonzalez, won his division by 41⁄2 lengths over Go Conquer in 1:373⁄5, with Willie Pleasant third for another Cal-bred Trifecta. Larry and June Rose owned Stardust Mel, and Larry trained the gelding, who was bred by Marion Marsten.

■ Conquest Farenheit to Hanson’s River Ranch

Hanson’s River Ranch has purchased California stallion Conquest Farenheit and is standing him at the Kingsburg ranch. He will be the farm’s frst Thoroughbred stallion and will continue to stand for $3,000.

“In the past, we had the pleasure of sale-prepping several of his yearlings for the Harris Farms sale consignment and were very impressed by them,” farm owner Dar Hanson told BloodHorse. “When we heard he may be available, we

COURTESY OF HARRIS FARMS/ LORI PIEDRA

were excited at the opportunity to acquire him.” Conquest Farenheit, who entered stud in 2019, has sired such runners as California-bred Lusma, who fnished third in the 2023 Golden Gate Debutante Stakes and Everett Nevin Stakes. Cali Conquest, a Cal-bred from the stallion’s frst crop, set a nine-furlong track record of 1:50.20 at Century Downs in Canada last October.

An earner of $187,655, Conquest Farenheit won the 2017 Pasadena Stakes and Baffe Stakes at Santa Anita and fnished second in Summer Stakes (G2T) at Woodbine. He is a 10-year-old son of Scat Daddy—Holy Smokie, by Holy Bull.

LEGGS GALORE SELLS FOR $200,000

California-bred graded stakes winner Leggs Galore sold for $200,000 Feb. 5 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale.

William Sims bred the 7-year-old daughter of Bayern—Cashing Tickets, by Indian Charlie. Legacy Bloodstock consigned Leggs Galore to the sale, and Gainesway Farm purchased her.

Phil D’Amato trained Leggs Galore for Sims, and she scored in six stakes, including the 2022 Buena Vista Stakes (G2T) and two editions of the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint. Leggs Galore won nine of 19 starts and earned $695,048.

FUSAICHI ZENON PENSIONED AT KINGFISHER

Japanese-bred Fusaichi Zenon will be calling Kingfsher Farms home. The $768,157 earner was found in an auction pen in Texas Feb. 21, and a massive effort was rallied to bring him out safely.

A son of Sunday Silence, Fusaichi Zenon broke his maiden frst out in Japan at Hanshin. He won a pair of stakes races, including a grade 2 event, early in 2000 and arrived in California in 2001. Second in an allowance/optional claiming race at Del Mar, Fusaichi Zenon ran fourth in the Man o’ War Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park before retirement.

Fusaichi Zenon originally went to stud at Magali Farms near Santa Ynez. He completed his stallion career in New Mexico.

An inspiring social media effort was made to generate the funds to secure and transport Fusaichi Zenon to his new home. He will live out his days peacefully thanks to Kingfsher Equine Rescue and Rehabilitation Inc. (KERRI), a non-proft 501(c)3 organization dedicated to retired racehorses. It was founded by Kingfsher Farms’ Katie Fisher and aims to provide the highest standard of sustainable racehorse aftercare.

CTBA Trainer of the Year

Choosing Cal-breds

ERIC KRULJAC HAS TRAINED MANY GOOD CAL-BREDS, HEADED BY THE CHOSEN VRON

Longtime horseman Eric Kruljac said he was “surprised” when he learned of his selection as the California Toroughbred Breeders Association 2023 Trainer of the Year, but maybe not for the reasons you’d expect.

“I didn’t even know the CTBA had that award,” Kruljac explained. “I said, ‘What for? It’s the horses that win all the races and earn all the money.’ But it’s kind of fun.”

Te afable Kruljac—conditioner, co-breeder, and part-owner of the Cali-

fornia-bred star Te Chosen Vron—has in recent years stepped back from the full-time duties that have mostly occupied him since he began training in Arizona in 1986. Tese days, Kruljac is concentrating more on the training career of his son Ian, and he said it won’t be long before he turns over the horses he still trains to him.

“Eventually, I’ll become the trainer emeritus guy,” Kruljac joked.

He started just 47 horses in 2023. He won nine races; Te Chosen Vron accounted for six of those, all in stakes

events. Tanks to the eforts of the lanky grade I-winning chestnut gelding, Kruljac’s horses posted a healthy $20,172 in earnings per start.

Kruljac, who lives in Del Mar and turned 71 in February, has totaled much bigger years in terms of purse earnings and number of winners. But he’s never had a horse that could match the 6-yearold Te Chosen Vron.

“It’s not even close,” said Kruljac, who has said he is “blessed” to have one this good so late in his career. “He’s so popular. People just marvel at his consistency. He’s

so honest. And he’s the easiest horse to train that I’ve ever had.”

Since late in 2020, when Te Chosen Vron made his 2-year-old debut, Kruljac has pushed all the right buttons for a horse that has won 15 of 20 lifetime races—14 of them in stakes conditions—and earned more than $1.2 million. Te Chosen Vron became a grade I winner by capturing the Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar in July, and he dominated his Cal-bred black-type competition in his other races. His only loss during the 2023 campaign came in a ffth-place fnish in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) at Santa Anita in November.

It is for his masterful management of the son of Vronsky for co-partners John Sondereker, Robert S. Fetkin, and Richard Tornburgh that Kruljac earned the Trainer of the Year award.

Kruljac purchased the dam of Te Chosen Vron, Tiz Molly, by Tiz Wonderful (a son of Cal-bred champion Tiznow), on behalf of Class Racing Stable for $25,000 at Keeneland in 2011. After a promising start to her racing career, winning her frst two starts, she was injured and eventually retired. Her owners wanted to keep her as a broodmare, and they formed the Tiz Molly Partners.

“To the partners, (awards) mean a lot to them as breeders and owners of the horse,” Kruljac said. “Tey’ve been great. Tey’ve given me great input and have never been anything but happy. It’s been a great experience.”

As solid as the campaign was for Te Chosen Vron, that loss in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint still rankles Kruljac. He blamed himself for “undertraining” his charge leading up to the race. It’s obvious he’d like another crack at it in 2024, when the Breeders’ Cup returns to Del Mar.

“He just didn’t fre the same way he always does,” Kruljac said. “I think I was a little light on his training. He was so alive after the Breeders’ Cup, I ran him back in the Cary Grant (Stakes) two weeks later, which is something I never do with any horse. I said at the time, ‘You dumb idiot.’ I basically used the Breeders’ Cup as a prep for the Cary Grant.”

Kruljac got his frst taste of racing through his grandfather, Walter Markham, who bred and raised purebred Hereford cattle at his ranch in the Carmel Valley and also raced Toroughbreds. He said he learned quite a bit about breeding by attending auctions with his grandfather. Kruljac started breeding horses years later on a 10-acre farm in Peoria, AZ. But coming out of college, Kruljac went in another direction, working for a friend whose detective agency investigated worker’s compensation claims on behalf of insurance companies. After several

years, he left that frm and started one of his own.

“I made more money at that than I ever did in racing,” Kruljac said.

Racing remained on his mind, though. He shuttered his frm after eight years and went into the horse business, frst as a breeder and bloodstock agent and then training. His wife, Donna, didn’t suit the change in lifestyle, and they divorced while remaining close friends.

“She told me she married a businessman, not a horse trainer,” said Kruljac.

He trained in Arizona and parttime in California for many years before settling into the Golden State full time in 2008. Trough Feb. 15, Kruljac has had 7,623 lifetime starters with 1,245 wins and career purse earnings of just over $25 million.

Cal-breds have been instrumental in his success. His only grade I winner prior to Te Chosen Vron was Steven Mitchell’s Leave Me Alone, a daughter of Bold Badgett out of a Moscow Ballet mare. Leave Me Alone won the 2005 Test Stakes at Saratoga by nearly eight lengths and was named champion Cal-bred 3-year-old female that year.

“She was brilliantly fast, but that brilliance only lasted a short time, a matter of months,” Krulac said. She retired with earnings of $653,330, was later sold to Summer Wind Farm for $1 million, and has produced such horses as 2015 Spinaway Stakes (G1) second Tap to It.

Among other top Cal-breds Kruljac trained were the multiple graded stakes-placed La Nez, an earner of $417,000 for Class Racing Stable; multiple stakes winners Centerofattention and Triumphant Flight; and graded stakesplaced Best Present Ever.

“I’ve had quite a bit of success with Calbreds,” Kruljac said.

At his peak, Kruljac said he maintained a stable of 30 to 35 horses. He began cutting the size of his operation in 2017, and he currently has eight in training.

“Frankly, I’m great with training just a few horses,” he said. “As I’ve gotten older, I fnd It’s much easier for me.”

FUN TO DREAM’S DAM HONORED SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR

California broodmares have added to the breed worldwide. Te exemplary California Broodmare of the Year list includes dams of champions in this state and throughout the country.

Lutess has already added to that rich history with four winners in four starters, including California Horse of the Year Fun to Dream and multiple stakes winner Heck Yeah. Tose runners have led to even more opportunities.

“She’s in foal to Justify,” said Phil Lebherz, who now owns Lutess. “I’m partners with Jill Bafert. Tey provided the breeding and I provided the mare.”

Jill Bafert co-owned Fun to Dream with Connie Pageler, a story that began with Connie’s late husband, Mike. Bob Baedeker, a partner with Mike in Heck Yeah along with Michael Sigband, asked Jill’s husband, Hall of Fame trainer Bob

Bafert, to train Heck Yeah. Under Baffert’s care, Heck Yeah, a son of California sire Acclamation, won the 2018 California Cup Derby, Echo Eddie Stakes, and California Cup Turf Sprint Stakes, ultimately earning $397,949.

Te Baferts partnered with the Pagelers to get Lutess in foal to Bafert-trained champion Arrogate, resulting in Fun to Dream. Mike didn’t live long enough to see Fun to Dream compete, but Jill and Connie had a two-year run with the flly, who earned $670,190 and won four stakes, including the 2022 La Brea Stakes (G1) and 2023 Santa Monica Stakes (G2).

Connie knew she wanted to honor her late husband by racing his fnal Toroughbreds, but she wasn’t in a position to carry on an extended breeding program. Tus, she sold Lutess to Lebherz early in Fun to Dream’s racing career, and last fall she and Jill sold Fun to Dream for $1.9 million through Hill ‘n’ Dale at Xalapa to K I Farm at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale.

Jerry and Ann Moss bred Lutess, a three-time winner and a daughter of Maria’s Mon—Alchema, by Menifee. Lutess’ third dam is stakes winner Careless Moment, and this is the family of millionaire and sire Practical Joke.

During her racing career, Lutess fnished second in a maiden claiming race to Perfect Feat, who would go on to produce two-time California-bred Horse of the Year Spiced Perfection for Premier Toroughbreds, of which Lebherz is the principal. Perfect Feat was named California’s Broodmare of the Year in 2018 and 2019.

Lutess has produced three foals by Smiling Tiger, a leading California sire that Lebherz and partners stand in the state. Now 17, Lutess will likely remain in Kentucky, Lebherz said, instead of undergoing the stress of travel back to California. She was due to foal in early March.

“Hopefully, she’ll have a healthy baby and we’ll get her in foal to Constitution,” Lebherz said.

TURNING THE TABLES

BIG POND AVENGES NARROW LA BREA LOSS AGAINST DADDYSRUBY

FrankieDettori’sfyingdismount is famous worldwide, and owner/breeder George Krikorian enjoyed watching the champion jockey perform it at Santa Anita Feb. 18. Even better, Dettori was jumping of Krikorian’s California-bredBigPond,whohad just captured the $100,500 Spring Fever Stakes.

“It’s special to have that,” said Krikorian, who noted it was the frst time Dettori has done his dismount of of a Krikorian runner.

Big Pond is also special.Winner of the 2023 Fleet Treat Stakes at Del Mar against state-bred company, she missed by a nose to fellow Cal-bred Daddysruby in the seven-furlong La Brea Stakes (G1) Dec. 26. Te Spring Fever ofered a rematch at a shorter six furlongs, and this time Big Pond

came away the decisive victor.

Te Spring Fever attracted six older distafers, all with black type. Nick Alexander entered his stakes-winning pair of Grazen roses—Rose Maddox and Rose Dawson. Harris Farms also had a pair: multiple stakes-placed All Dialed In and Scary Fast Ride, who ran second in the 2023 Bear Fan Stakes in her only stakes attempt.

Big Pond won the Fleet Treat at seven furlongs, defeating stakes winners Chismosa and previously unbeaten Ceiling Crusher. Krikorian’s flly had succeeded at six furlongs in her debut last June.

“Te cutback in distance was a little concerning,” said trainer Tim Yakteen. “She ran a big race when she broke her maiden, but that was the last time we had gone three-quarters. She’s a big, scopey flly.”

Drawn on the rail, Big Pond went of as the even-money favorite. Daddysruby, who had led throughout the La Brea, holding of Big Pond by just a nose, went to the front again, clicking of the frst quarter-mile in :22.71.

Big Pond tracked Daddysruby in second, and Dettori, who rode Big Pond for the frst time in the La Brea, decided to stick a little closer.

“After a furlong,” Dettori said, “I was at the tail end of (Daddysruby), and I thought, ‘I’m not going to let her get away with it today.’ I put pressure on Daddysruby all the way. I asked my flly at the quarter pole, and she put up a good fght and won well.”

Big Pond glided away from the feld, scoring by an easy three lengths in 1:09.28. Scary Fast Ride passed Daddysruby to get second by two lengths.

“She ran really professionally,” said Krikorian. “When she came around the turn and into the stretch, she was so comfortable that I thought, ‘My gosh, she’s going to win this one pretty easily.’ And that’s what happened. We’re pretty grateful.”

Big Pond is one more ofspring of Krikorian’s successful California sire Mr. Big. She is out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Beside Still Water. Krikorian had purchased Beside Still Water for $70,000 in foal to Kitten’s Joy at the 2016 Keeneland November sale.

“She had trained exceptionally well,” Yakteen said of Big Pond after the Spring Fever. “We were planning on the Santa Monica (G2). Unfortunately, she caught a little bug the week of the Santa Monica, so we had to skip that and we came into the Spring Fever. Sometimes it is a blessing in disguise the way things work out for us.”

Palos Verdes Stakes

GOING TO TOWN

BIG CITY LIGHTS DIGS IN FOR GRADED SCORE

OwnerWilliamPeeplesandtrainer Richard Mandella needed a change of plans for Big City Lights, that much they knew, after the California-bred son of Mr. Big ran second to Te Chosen Vron in four consecutive state-bred stakes events.

Teir decision to avoid Te Chosen Vron for now paid of when 5-year-old Big City Lights, ridden by Flavien Prat, nipped pacesetting Hopkins at the wire for a hardfought nose victory in the $100,000 Palos Verdes Stakes (G3) Feb. 10 at Santa Anita.

“Richard and I talked it over,” said the 80-year-old Peeples, enjoying his frst solo graded stakes triumph in the six-furlong Palos Verdes. “We’d been chasing Te Chosen Vron for so long, and we couldn’t keep running second to him. Te horse needed a win.”

Prior to the Palos Verdes, they brought back Big City Lights in open company after a seven-week break, tuning up for the stakes by scoring in a 61 2-furlong allowance as the favorite Jan. 6. With Prat aboard for the frst time, the dark bay horse won in a smart time of 1:14.85.

Tat race set him up nicely for the Palos Verdes a month later, and bettors noticed. Tey made Big City Lights the 2-5 favorite over the Bob Bafert-trained Hopkins, the defending champion, at 9-5 in a fve-horse feld.

Big City Lights didn’t get a great break, stepping on himself leaving the starting gate and suf-

fering a minor cut, it was later determined. Tat allowed Hopkins, breaking from the outside post, to clear the small feld, gaining the early advantage. He opened up a 11 2-length edge for jockey Juan Hernandez while carving quick quarter-mile splits of :22.75 and :45.09. Big City LIghts stalked the leader on the outside, with Mystifcation to his inside.

Te two leaders soon drew away from the others. Leaving the turn, Prat asked for more, but Big City Lights wasn’t making much of an impact on Hopkins and still had open ground to make up at the furlong mark. In deep stretch, however, the challenger pulled alongside and nailed the win at the wire while completing six furlongs in 1:09.91. It was four lengths back to thirdplace fnisher See Trough It.

Mandella was glad to see Big City Lights overcome his early trouble.

“He showed his class, he dug in, and fought it out anyway,” the Hall of Fame conditioner noted.

Big City Lights became the frst Calbred horse to win the Palos Verdes since the Jef Bonde-trained Frumious in 2012.

Peeples purchased Big City Lights for $22,000 at the Fasig-Tipton California fall yearling sale in 2020. Te winner is out of the Washington-bred Champagne Exchange, by Exchange Rate.

Never worse than second while winning fve of nine lifetime starts, the lightly raced Big City Lights has banked $392,420 for Peeples, who lives in Santa Barbara.

Big City Lights won the Fasig-Tipton Futurity at Santa Anita at age 2, and in 2022 defeated Slow Down Andy and Finneus while capturing the Real Good Deal Stakes at Del Mar. After three consecutive stakes losses to Te Chosen Vron beginning in September, Big City Lights returned from a 10-month absence due to a knee injury to again run second to his rival in the seven-furlong Cary Grant Stakes last November.

“Hopefully, we’ll get another crack at Te Chosen Vron this summer,” Peeples said.

SIR PRANCEALOT FILLY TOPS WINTER SALE

HARRIS FARMS PURCHASES SALE TOPPER AND LEADS ALL BUYERS

John Harris’ Harris Farms was far and away the leading buyer at the 2024 California Toroughbred Breeders Association winter mixed sale. Held Jan. 30 at Pomona, the sale ofered a variety of broodmares, yearlings, 2-year-olds, and older horses of racing age.

Harris Farms purchased the sale topper, a 2-year-old California-bred daughter of Sir Prancealot, for $37,000. Consigned by Adrian Gonzalez’s Checkmate Toroughbreds, the flly is out of the unraced Unusual Heat mare Katie’s Heat. Checkmate, Hector Cuevas, et al bred the sale topper, whose dam is a half sister to two-time Cal-bred champion Brother Derek and stakes winners Don’tsellmeshort and Sister Kate.

“She’s a beautiful flly, really balanced, and looked super athletic,” said Harris Farms horse division general manager Jonny Hilvers of the sale topper. “She had a nice walk—just overall a really nice flly.”

Harris bought 19 for a total of $228,400. As Hilvers explained, “We’re looking for a little bit of everything— broodmares, yearlings, and 2-year-olds.”

Many buyers turned out for the sale, whether in person, online, or by phone. Te sale results list 111 diferent entities that purchased horses. Checkmate was the leading consignor, selling 21 of the 22 it ofered for a gross of $283,700.

Of the 136 horses ofered, 111 grossed $951,100, an increase of 15.8% over 2023. Te average price was $8,568, a decrease of 6.1%, and the median rose

36.8% to $6,500. With only 25 horses not selling, the buy-back rate was 18.4%.

“Given all the current uncertainties with racing in the state, we were pleased overall with the results of the sale,” said Doug Burge, president of the CTBA. “Te average was similar to last year, and both the median and gross sales were much higher. Also, the RNA rate was low for this sale, as we were able to get the majority of the horses sold both in the auction ring and post sale. Overall, the majority of the consignors seemed pleased with the results.”

Several consignors brought large groups to the sale. Checkmate, Havens Bloodstock Agency, Rancho San Miguel, and Lovacres Ranch each ofered more than 20 horses apiece. Tey were the top four consignors, both by gross and by number sold.

CAL-BRED INVESTMENTS PAY OFF FOR LONGTIME BANK EXECUTIVE

WILLIAM PEEPLES

After a lifetime of making careful investments, William Peeples wants to follow his own instincts—and smell the roses.

Peeples, 81 in April, is retiring from the Goleta bank he helped start 35 years ago. Tat will allow him more time to spend with his wife, Ardyce, and continue pursuit of another major interest— racing Toroughbreds.

As a longtime pinhooker and client of bloodstock agent John Brocklebank, Peeples applied to horse acquisition much the same investment knowledge he used in banking. He bought and sold his best young horses and realized returns that he later reinvested. Nowadays, he’s keeping the horses he buys to race himself.

“I’ve always treated racing as a business, an avocation,

I guess,” Peeples said. “It’s a divergence from what I’m used to. Racing is just another world, so much more relaxing, even though I get very nervous beforehand if I have a horse running. Of course, there’s the thrill of winning a race.

“It’s a challenge as well, the racing, the breeding, pinhooking. Going to the sales in places like Florida, Kentucky, New York; it’s enjoyable. I’ve been successful enough at it to stay involved.”

And he’s enjoying racing as much as ever, thanks in large part to star California-bred sprinter Big City Lights, recent winner of the Palos Verdes Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita.

“Not a particular favorite moment, but watching this horse develop as a colt has to be the most enjoyment I’ve had in racing,” Peeples said. “He was just awesome when he frst started.”

Big City Lights, then trained by Luis Mendez, began his career at Santa Anita as a 2-year-old in 2021, romping in his maiden on debut by 121⁄2 lengths. He came back a month later to dominate the fve-furlong Fasig-Tipton Futurity by 71 4 lengths.

Te son of Mr. Big switched to Richard Mandella’s barn as a 3-year-old, winning the Real Good Deal Stakes over top state-breds Slow Down Andy and Finneus. A knee injury sidelined Big City Light for 10 months in 2023, but his nose victory Feb. 10 in the Palos Verdes— in his second start following that layof—indicates he’s back.

Purchased by Peeples for $22,000 from breeder Bar C Racing Stables at the Fasig-Tipton California fall yearling sale, Big City Lights, now 5, has won fve of nine starts with four seconds and earnings of nearly $400,000.

Peeples currently has three other horses in training. Tree-year-old gelding Tranche, furloughed since October, is set to return to action soon. A $210,000 Keeneland yearling buy, the Kentucky-bred son of Collected upset odds-on Mirahmadi in last year’s Fasig-Tipton Futurity—coincidentally by 71⁄4 lengths—to break his maiden at 20-1.

“Tat’s about the maximum I’ll go,” Peeples said of Tranche’s selling price.

Peeples also has a pair of recently purchased 2-yearolds set to debut later this year: a Good Magic flly and a gelding by Om. Both unnamed, they are trained by

Mendez, who conditions all of Peeples’ young horses.

Tough he maintains a small band of two to four broodmares, Peeples said he prefers buying horses to raising foals. Te foals his mares produce are for sale.

“I can’t say that I’ve bred anything that was outstanding,” he said.

Looking to his future purchases after retirement, Peeples said, “As I go forward, maybe I’ll reach a little more, maybe go down a little in numbers and up in terms of quality.”

Born in Wisconsin, where he grew up, Peeples has lived in Santa Barbara for the last 50 years. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, he has worked in accounting and fnance his entire career following a fveyear stint as a fnance ofcer in the U.S. Air Force. He and Ardyce, his high school sweetheart, have two daughters as well as four grandchildren.

Racing is just another world, so much more relaxing, even though I get very nervous beforehand if I have a horse running.” —William Peeples

He worked in various accounting and fnance roles before joining a group of 100 area investors to form Community West Bank, which opened in 1989 in the growing beach town of Goleta, near Santa Barbara. He serves as the chairman of the bank’s holding company and as bank vice chairman. Te bank was approved for merger efective April 1 with a larger bank, Peeples said. Confdent in the institution’s future, he decided it was a good time to retire.

Peeples got his start in ownership in the Quarter Horse game during the 1980s, joining a group of friends from the frm where he worked to buy and race a few horses. Te partnership did not last long,

but Peeples said he developed a friendship with the pinhooker Brocklebank. A decade later, they moved into buying and selling Toroughbreds, making frequent appearances at sales.

“All John has loved his whole life are his horses,” Peeples said. “He probably remembers every horse we’ve ever had. He taught me so much about conformation and what to look for when buying young horses. It’s been a fun ride with him. We made a few mistakes because when we frst started, we liked Toroughbreds that looked like Quarter Horses. But we got better at it.”

Peeples described their approach as “conformation buyers” rather than pedigree shoppers because they believe they can fnd better value that way.

One of their earliest successes was Cover Gal, a California-bred daughter of Falstaf they bought for $32,000 at the 1998 Del Mar summer yearling sale. Tey decided to race her and took on a couple of other partners. Cover Gal won the Railbird Stakes (G2) the following year and six stakes overall, earning more than $600,000. She was named the 1999 Cal-bred champion 2-year-old female and 2000 Cal-bred champion 3-year-old female.

Although Peeples said he stopped pinhooking about three years ago, he still sends his young horses to Brocklebank and Mendez, who run a training and sales business in Hurricane, Utah, near St. George.

Peeples doesn’t attend as many auctions as he used to due to some health problems, but gets plenty of information on potential prospects from Brocklebank.

“I don’t really even need to be there,” he noted. “We just know what we like. I can rely on him.”

TREATING CUSHING’S DISEASE

OLDER HORSES ARE PARTICULARLY SUSCEPTIBLE

Called Cushing’s disease for many years, pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) is a problem often seen in older horses, generally starting at about age 15 or older. Older broodmares and retired horses may start to show signs in their teens.

Nicholas Frank, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, a professor of large animal internal medicine at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, says that not all old horses get PPID.

“Te older they get, the more likely it is for PPID to develop, but there are some old horses that never go on to develop PPID,” he said. “Why it develops in certain horses and not others is a difcult question to answer. It generally develops because of oxidative damage to neurons in the brain that go to the pituitary gland. It seems to

happen at a faster rate in some horses and is similar to Parkinson’s disease in people. Tere may be genetic factors.

“Regarding why it develops in some animals—in addition to genetics— since it is oxidative damage, we wonder if these animals did not receive as many antioxidants through their life.

“Providing adequate vitamin E in the diet is a recommendation for all horses, and may be particularly important to try to decrease the risk of PPID. We now recommend that horses receive this vitamin in a multivitamin supplement, and in older horses we recommend providing additional vitamin E as a specifc supplement. We always suggest vitamin E if we are trying to lower the risk of PPID. Tere are no studies saying that it prevents PPID, but it may help and certainly does no harm.”

Horses naturally get vitamin E from grass and green forage. If they are on pasture for much of the year, this would supply what they need.

“If they can’t be on pasture for various reasons, such as equine metabolic syndrome, vitamin E supplementation is defnitely recommended,” Frank said. “Tose are factors we can do something about. But even keeping a horse on a vitamin E supplement for its whole life does not stop PPID from happening. Tere are still genetic infuences that lead to some horses developing it.

“Based on the epidemiological studies that we’ve done, we usually say that more than 20% of horses over the age of 15 will develop PPID.”

Te most common signs of PPID include a long hair coat that may be slow to shed in the spring (or may not shed at all), laminitis, and increased drinking.

“One of the reasons we see so many diferent signs is that with development of multiple small pituitary tumors, they are sending out multiple hormones,” Frank said.

One of these is adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), a hormone that plays an important role in the body by stimulating production of cortisol in the adrenal glands.

Cortisol is a hormone that is important for regulating glucose, protein, and

lipid metabolism. It also suppresses immune system responses and helps maintain blood pressure. A horse with PPID has excess production of ACTH.

If they can’t be on pasture for various reasons, such as equine metabolic syndrome, vitamin E supplementation is defnitely recommended.”
—Dr. Nicholas Frank

“We can measure the ACTH, but there are other hormones being secreted from these tumors as well,” Frank said. “Multiple hormones can lead to diferent body systems being afected. Te situation with the hair coat is due to increase in these hormones, and in this case, we think there is also alpha MSH (alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone) being increased in addition to the increased ACTH.

“We see multiple manifestations of PPID because there is a mixture of hormones coming from these small tu-

mors, and that’s why it is afecting multiple body systems. When you consider cortisol’s efects throughout the body, this hormone afects multiple body systems as well.”

DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

Your veterinarian can determine which of the available tests for PPIS is best for a particular situation.

“Tere are two tests we commonly use,” Frank said. “One is to measure the resting or basal ACTH concentration. Tis is very straightforward and simply involves taking a blood sample and measuring the ACTH concentration. Te second test is the thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) stimulation test.

“Te way we use these two tests is as follows: If we see obvious clinical signs that the horse has moderate or advanced PPID, we take a blood sample and check the resting ACTH. It will be increased. When the signs are moderate or advanced, we just use this test and can confrm the diagnosis. Te challenge when we are dealing with a horse that has early clinical signs—which are very subtle—is that the resting ACTH test is not sensitive enough to pick up on this disease in the early stages.

www.ctba.com March 2024 CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED 33
DR. DIANNE MCFARLANE A long hair coat that may be slow to shed is a common sign of PPID

“At that point we need a test that will stimulate the system, so we can see when a horse is developing PPID even in the earliest stages. Tat’s when we use the TRH stimulation test. Tis involves injecting TRH and then collecting a blood sample 10 minutes later. Because we are stimulating the system, we see the ACTH go up in all horses, but in a horse that’s developing PPID, we see a higher increase in the ACTH. We can then confrm the diagnosis in the early-afected animal.”

TREATMENT

Owners of horses with PPID often ask if pergolide is the only medical option for treatment, or if there are supplements that can be given in addition that can help. Pergolide, sold under various brand names, is an ergoline-based dopamine receptor agonist. It works by binding with drug receptors in the brain that control the production of dopamine, and has been used in humans for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is associated with reduced dopamine activity in the brain.

“Pergolide is not the only treatment option,” Frank said. “Another drug, called cyproheptadine (a serotonin receptor antagonist), can be used. But the

experience we’ve had in treating PPID has shown that pergolide is more efective—so it is the drug we recommend.

“Tere are times, however, with severely afected horses, that it doesn’t work as well anymore. We have already increased the dosage of pergolide and have come to a point where we add cy-

—Dr. Nicholas Frank

proheptadine as a second, additional treatment. We give both drugs at the same time. In these situations we are generally giving the horse 3 milligrams (3 tablets) of pergolide daily, and add the cyproheptadine to try to get additional improvement.”

While some supplements sometimes help, these should not be used in place

of pergolide for treating PPID.

“Te most common supplement used in PPID horses is chasteberry, which is a natural supplement that has been shown to help decrease some of the clinical signs of PPID,” Frank said. “It won’t replace pergolide, but can be given in addition. Te supplement I recommend for all horses with PPID is vitamin E.

“How well pergolide controls PPID depends upon the stage of the disease. If we can diagnose it early—and signs are mild—we expect a very good response to pergolide. Te horse may return to normal appearance, and the clinical signs go away.

“If the horse has moderate or advanced disease, however, we are usually looking at simply being able to improve the clinical signs (reducing their severity), since we may not be able to resolve them. Te horse probably can’t completely return to normal but will be improved.”

An owner should closely monitor the horse and see if there are any signs that medication is no longer working. Sometimes the doses need to be recalibrated/increased.

“Horse owners who are attuned to their horses might notice that the horse is beginning to look dull again and more lethargic—spending more time sleeping,” Frank said. “If the medication dose is not correct anymore and needs to be adjusted, we might see the horse beginning to lose muscle mass again, and the hair coat will grow longer again.

“If the horse is urinating more frequently and drinking more, this is also a sign the treatment dose is not high enough.

“Lastly, if we are dealing with a horse that has insulin dysregulation (and the insulin situation is worse in a horse with PPID), if we are monitoring insulin concentrations and we’ve got it down to a reasonable level by treating the PPID with pergolide, and then we do an insulin check and it has gone up again, this would suggest that control of this disease is slipping. We need to increase the dose again.

“We need to be checking the horse every 6 to 12 months and recalibrate the

dose if there is any change in status. It’s not a simple regular dosing increase; there is no formula. We can’t just tell people to increase it by half a tablet every 2 years. It must be case by case, based on the clinical signs and test results.

“Te frst step is to assess the stage of disease—whether it’s early and mild, moderate, or advanced. Tis guides our selection of diagnostic tests and also the choice of dose for pergolide. It also tells us what we can expect in terms of the horse’s response to treatment.”

MANAGEMENT CHANGES

Horse owners often wonder how well pergolide works to control PPID, and if there are management changes that also need to be made to help control the condition. Management of horses with PPID often includes specialized hoof care, parasite control, and vaccinations, since these horses have a weaker immune system.

“In terms of management changes, the big one is diet,” Frank said. “We know that some horses with PPID already have insulin dysregulation, and the PPID can make it worse. We must determine whether the horse has insulin dysregulation or not before we make any recommendation in terms of diet.

“We encourage all veterinarians who are managing horses with PPID to check their insulin status. In addition to diagnosing PPID, we then need to know what we will be able to feed the horse.

“We want to be able to make informed recommendations, and this depends on whether the horse has insulin dysregulation. Tis is particularly important in old horses. We have some very good senior feeds, and if we have an older horse that needs additional calories, we should be able to use senior feeds—if the horse does not have problems with insulin dysregulation.

“If there are problems with insulin dysregulation, we need to look more closely

at diet. We still need to provide calories, but be cautious with the amount of sugars. We can’t determine the best recommendation until we know the insulin status. We can’t stop at the PPID diagnosis; we need to go a step farther to get the insulin diagnosis before we make any recommendations regarding care of that animal, or we may increase the risk for the horse developing laminitis.”

Insulin status will determine whether the horse can go out on pasture or how much grass access the horse should receive. Some of these horses need specialized hoof care if they have laminitis.

“Parasite control is also important,” Frank said. “We know that horses with untreated PPID or advanced PPID may have higher numbers of parasites. Teir immune system is impaired. We sometimes see roundworms in older horses with PPID, and we normally don’t see roundworms except in young horses. So it is important in managing horses with PPID to have regular fecal foats to see what the parasite burden is and address this as needed.

“We also recommend that horses with PPID be vaccinated and keep them current with their vaccinations.”

2024 LEADING SIRES IN CALIFORNIA BY AVERAGE EARNINGS

2024 LEADING SIRES IN CALIFORNIA BY MONEY WON

2024 LEADING TURF SIRES IN CALIFORNIA

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. Earnings are from all available Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan and Hong Kong. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2022 was $30,508 or 73% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 73% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong
