CALIFORNIA CUP OFFERS VALUABLE OPPORTUNITIES

he 34th edition of California Cup, the winter showcase for many of the top Cal-bred and Cal-sired horses in training, will be held at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, Jan. 13. Eforts by the California Toroughbred Breeders Association ensured there would be no reduction in purses from last year for the fve stakes races on the card. Te annual event, always known for large and competitive felds, will feature $900,000 in stakes purses, with additional races carded for various levels of state-breds that will boost total purses for the day to more than $1 million, exclusively for Calbreds. Besides the fve stakes races for 3-year-olds, fllies and mares, and older horses both on dirt and turf, the day also ofers races for Cal-bred maidens and frst-condition allowance horses.

Cal Cup has proven to be a celebration of the resilient California breeding industry, providing lucrative purses for horsemen, great competitive racing for the fans, and enticing wagering opportunities resulting in healthy betting handle. New this year is a ftting renaming of the California Cup Derby to the California Chrome Cal Cup Derby. It honors the alltime leading Cal-bred money earner whose victory in the 2014 edition was the springboard to a Horse of the Year campaign that included wins in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness and, ultimately, a Hall of Fame selection. Tat includes all existing awards for breeders, owners, and stallion owners. Tere is a 30% owner award bonus in open

maiden special weight races and in allowance races for fnishing frst through ffth. Tere also is a 20% bonus for the winner of a starter allowance race. Te maiden bonus program makes available a $10,000 bonus for owners of registered California-bred or California-sired maidens in Toroughbred maiden special weight races in Northern California.

Wild Jewels adds the Gold Rush Stakes to his earlier victory in the Golden Nugget Stakes

Another Gem for Wild Jewels C alifornia-bred Wild Jewels made it back-to-back stakes victories at Golden Gate Fields when he scored over Classy City in the $75,000 Gold Rush Stakes Dec. 2 for 2-year-olds. Racing second for the early going of the one-mile race under jockey Catalino Martinez, Wild Jewels took the lead in the second turn. Classy City grabbed the lead in the stretch, but Wild Jewels came back to defeat that rival by a half-length in 1:39.90 despite Classy City drifting out. Te stewards posted the inquiry sign but made no change because Wild Jewels outfnished Classy City.

Larry and Marianne Williams bred Wild Jewels, a son of Tamarando— Ribbon of Jewels, by Distorted Humor. Steve Specht trains the gelding for the Williamses. Te Williamses also bred and owned two other winners the same card: Tiger in My Tank, a 2021 California-sired son of Smiling Tiger, and Ward ’n Jerry, a 2013 Cal-bred son of Lucky Pulpit and half brother to their sire Tamarando. Wild Jewels was winning his fourth race in six starts for earnings of $148,810. He also fnished second in the Everett Nevin Stakes.

The historic Hollywood Gold Cup, frst won by Seabiscuit in 1938, has been downgraded from a grade 1 event to a grade 2 for 2024 by the American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. The Gold Cup through the years has highlighted many top California-breds, including Native Diver and Lava Man, who each won it three times. The Gold Cup, now run at Santa Anita upon the closure of Hollywood Park, was one of fve grade 1 races nationwide that were demoted to grade 2 status. The others were the Carter Handicap and Man o’ War Stakes at Aqueduct, Beverly D. Stakes at Colonial Downs, and United Nations Stakes at Monmouth Park. The only race upgraded to grade 1 was the Franklin-Simpson Stakes at Kentucky Downs. The committee reviewed 970 U.S. stakes with a purse of at least $75,000 and assigned graded status to 429, 11 fewer than in 2023, and listed status to 213. Ten graded races were upgraded; nine new grade 2 races, and four new grade 3 races were identifed. Fourteen new listed races and two new listed-restricted races were upgraded from non-listed black-type status. Thirty graded races were downgraded. Besides the fve grade 1s, 10 grade 2 and 15 grade 3 races were demoted. Thirteen listed races were downgraded to non-listed blacktype status. The changes come amid declining foal crops in recent decades and a decrease in the number of races taking place. None of the nine races elevated to grade 2 or four races upgraded to grade 3 are California stakes. The Californian Stakes, Goldikova Stakes, and Royal Heroine Stakes at Santa Anita were demoted from grade 2 to grade 3. The La Jolla Handicap at Del Mar, Desert Stormer Stakes and Kona Gold Stakes at Santa Anita, and Golden Gate Handicap at Golden Gate Fields were downgraded from grade 3 to listed status. Golden Gate has not scheduled the Golden Gate Handicap for 2024 in what is expected to be its fnal season of racing.

Cody’s Wish Wins Second Vox Populi

Cody’s Wish is a popular winner of his second Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile

Cody’s Wish, winner of the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) at Santa Anita and beloved equine pal to the late Cody Dorman, has been voted the frst back-to-back winner of the Secretariat Vox Populi Award. Te award will be given to representatives of the Cody’s Wish team at Santa Anita during the Jan. 13 racing card. Secretariat’s owner, Penny Chenery, created the Vox Populi Award in 2010 to annually recognize the racehorse whose popularity and racing excellence best resounded with the public and gained recognition for the sport. Te story of Cody’s Wish will always be linked to his namesake, Cody Dorman, who lived courageously with a rare genetic disorder and died Nov. 5, just six weeks shy of his 18th birthday and only a day after witnessing Cody’s Wish win the Dirt Mile (G1).

Owned by Godolphin, trained by Bill Mott, and ridden by Junior Alvarado, Cody’s Wish in 2023 also won the Churchill Downs Stakes (G1), Metropolitan Handicap (G1), and Vosburgh Stakes (G2). “We want to thank everyone who voted for Cody’s Wish to help him achieve his second consecutive Vox Populi Award,” wrote Dorman’s family. “Te feeling of amazement and happiness has never changed from the frst moment we met Cody’s Wish to this day and beyond. Seeing his performances on the track and his enduring love for Cody in person will be branded into our hearts forever.” A ffth-generation great-grandson of Secretariat, Cody’s Wish also won the award in 2022. Retiring with 11 wins in 16 starts and career earnings of $3,106,030, Cody’s Wish will stand at Godolphin’s Jonabell Farm in Kentucky.

Chancery Way Gets a Double Fresh of winning the Nov. 12 Betty Grable Stakes at Del Mar, Chancery Way returned to her Northern California home base and captured the $75,900 Bear Fan Stakes at Golden Gate Fields. Ridden by Evin Roman in the Dec. 9 event, Chancery Way led from early in the six furlongs and scored by 11⁄2 lengths in 1:09.81. Te flly’s foray to Southern California impressed bettors, who sent her away as the 4-5 favorite in the Bear Fan. She defeated Scary Fast Ride, with All Dialed In third in the event for older California-bred and

California-sired distafers. Jamey Tomas trains Chancery Way for the father-and-son team of Andy and Rob Smolich. Te flly was winning her seventh race in 12 starts, with two seconds and two thirds, for total earnings of $315,770. ■ Pavel Gets First Stakes Winner California sire Pavel was represented by his frst stakes winner when Madison Rae captured the $100,000 Soviet Problem Stakes at Los Alamitos Dec. 10. Madison Rae, a 2021 California-bred flly, won the one-mile race by a half-length in 1:38.52. Paul and Zillah Reddam’s Reddam Racing bred Madison Rae, who is out of the Scat Daddy mare Taffeta. She is owned by CYBT, Rafter JR Ranch, STD Racing Stable, and Michael Nentwig and trained by Peter Miller. The Reddams raced Pavel and stand him at their Ocean Breeze Ranch. A son of Creative Cause, Pavel won the 2018 Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) and 2017 Smarty Jones Stakes (G3) and earned $2,090,351. ■ Finnegan’s Wake Moved Finnegan’s Wake, a grade 1-winning son of Powerscourt, has moved to Dr. Robert Hunter’s Hunter Stallion Station in Wilton for the 2024 breeding season. From 11 registered foals of racing age, Finnegan’s Wake has produced 10 runners and fve winners. The stallion won fve graded stakes, including the 2015 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes (G1T), and earned $1,594,665. Finnegan’s Wake is out of the Silver Ghost mare Boat’s Ghost. He is a half brother to Puca, the dam of 2023 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mage and 2023 Remsen Stakes (G2) winner Dornoch.

Chancery Way wins the Bear Fan Stakes at Golden Gate Fields

Rancho San Miguel has added undefeated Bolden to its stallion roster for 2024. The California-bred is a 2018 son of leading California sire Square Eddie and will stand for an introductory fee of $3,500. Raced by Gary Hartunian’s Rockingham Ranch and trained by Peter Miller and Phil D’Amato, Bolden started four times, winning in his racing debut by 51⁄2 lengths at Santa Anita on the main track in 2020. He added two allowance victories at Santa Anita in 2022, winning one six-furlong turf race by 73⁄4 lengths in 1:07.50. His fnal score came in an allowance race at Del Mar in 2023. Bolden earned $177,540. Reddam Racing bred Bolden from the Flower Alley mare Bas. The colt sold for $100,000 to Miller as agent at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton California yearling sale.

10 YEARS AGO Facing 13 rivals, WEEWINNIN sprung a 21-1 upset in the $251,500 California Cup Turf Classic at Santa Anita Jan. 25, 2014. Jockey Joe Talamo kept the 4-year-old California-bred gelding settled on the rail behind leaders Summer Hit and Lucky Primo throughout much of the 11⁄8 miles on the turf. When Lucky Primo started to tire, he drifted out slightly, leaving a hole for Weewinnin to burst through and win by 21⁄4

HISTORY the stretch, Big Jag collared Kona Gold at the wire to win by a head in 1:08.05. Swiss Yodeler, who would go on to be a successful California sire, fnished third. Tim Pinfeld trained Big Jag for Julius Zolezzi, who bred Big Jag, a 6-year-old son of Kleven—In Hopes, by Affrmed. Named the champion Cal-bred sprinter of 1998 and 1999, Big Jag eventually earned a total of $1,800,329 and today still ranks 16th on the all-time leading Calbred earners list.

25 YEARS AGO California-bred BIG JAG defeated future Eclipse Award winner Kona Gold in the $200,000 Palos Verdes Handicap (G2) at Santa Anita Jan. 30, 1999. Kona Gold, who would be named the national champion sprinter of 2000, few to the early lead in the six-furlong race, while Big Jag and jockey Jose Valdivia Jr. raced in fourth. In the span of three months, California-bred MONEY LENDER won four stakes, culminating in the San Miguel Stakes at Santa Anita Jan. 23, 1974. He began the streak late in his 2-year-old season in the Oct. 28 Norfolk Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita and then added the Dec. 16 California Juvenile Stakes (G2) at Bay Meadows and the Dec. 29 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes at Santa Anita prior to the six-furlong San Miguel. Ridden by Denis Tierney and trained by the legendary former rider John Longden, Money Lender defeated Triple Crown by a nose in the San Miguel, with El Espanoleto third. Longden also bred Money Lender, a son of Nashville—Gale Velvet, by Royal Coinage, and raced him in his wife’s name. Longden had purchased Gale Velvet while the mare was carrying Money Lender for $6,000 from actor Desi Arnaz at a California Thoroughbred Breeders Association sale.

Memoriam

John Shear, who for decades served as the paddock captain at Santa Anita, died Dec. 12 in a rehabilitation facility in Arcadia. He was 102. Beloved by racing fans, his fellow employees, jockeys, and horsemen, Shear worked at Santa Anita for more than 60 years until his retirement at age 100 in July 2021. Born Jan. 17, 1921, in England, Shear was raised in an orphanage. At 4’ 11” he originally aspired to be a jockey. He sustained a shoulder injury while serving in an anti-aircraft unit during World War II and following the war emigrated to Canada and then came to Santa Anita as an exercise boy in 1954.

“I was exercising horses for a guy in Vancouver, and he asked me if I’d like to go with him to Santa Anita that fall,” said Shear years later. “I said sure, and as soon as I stepped off that van in the stable area here, I said, ‘Lord, this is where I want to be.’ The place was so incredibly beautiful, and I’ve never gotten tired of it.” Shear was an assistant trainer when he frst began working in Santa Anita’s parking lot in 1961. Well known and liked for decades at both Santa Anita and at Hollywood Park, he earned national acclaim at age 90 in 2011, when he likely saved a 5-year-old girl from catastrophic injury by shielding her from a loose horse that bolted out of Santa Anita’s walking ring. Although Shear was run over, sustaining multiple fractures, Roxy Key, who was accompanied by her father, escaped unscathed. John Shear is survived by his wife, Diane, and their son, Michael Shear.

FIVE NAMED WOOLF AWARD FINALISTS Five veteran jockeys who ride throughout the U.S. have been selected as fnalists for the 2024 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award. Presented annually by Santa Anita since 1950, the Woolf Award is determined by a vote of jockeys nationwide and can only be won once. The 75th annual Woolf Award winner will be announced in February. Southern California-based Edwin Maldonado joins Junior Alvarado, Alex Birzer, Julien Leparoux, and Rodney Prescott as fnalists. The award is named in honor of the late jockey George Woolf, whose many mounts included Azucar, the winner of the inaugural Santa Anita Handicap in 1935, and the popular Seabiscuit. Maldonado Maldonado has persevered through serious injuries and reestablished himself as a consistent top-10 rider with the help of agent Tony Matos. A Southern California regular since 2010, Maldonado in 2012 supplanted longtime Fairplex Park riding champ Martin Pedroza at that year’s Los Angeles County Fair meet. Maldonado garnered his frst grade I stakes victory in October 2022, aboard Bob Baffert-trained Defunded in the Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita. Through the end of the Los Alamitos December meeting, Maldonado had 1,538 career wins for purse earnings of nearly $53.5 million. Best known as the regular rider of Bill Mott-trained Cody’s Wish, winner of the 2022-23 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1), Alvarado also won the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Santa Anita aboard Mott-trained Just F Y I. He was the leading rider at Arlington Park in 2009. Birzer is a fve-time leading rider at Prairie Meadows and a four-time leader at The Woodlands. He rides primarily at Prairie Meadows, Oaklawn Park, and Remington Park. Leparoux is a consistently prominent force at Keeneland, having amassed several riding titles there. He rode for many years on the Southern California circuit and has won Eclipse Awards as champion apprentice jockey in 2006 and champion jockey in 2009. Prescott is Indiana’s all-time leading rider and has been a consistent top-10 rider at Horseshoe Indianapolis, with three riding titles there.

TURF PARADISE TO RACE IN 2024 Turf Paradise, the Phoenix, Ariz., track that had been scheduled to close, will conduct a 2024 race meeting. The Arizona Racing Commission unanimously approved the track’s request for dates, and Turf Paradise is scheduled a 57-day live meet, from Jan. 29-May 4. “I decided to postpone my retirement because of the many stake holders here in Arizona that want racing to continue,” said Jerry Sims, owner of Turf Paradise. Sims has owned the property since 2000. He noted at the commission meeting that any surveying of the property related to a potential sale would not interfere with racing, which is listed as four days a week, Monday through Thursday.

Cal-bred honors are awarded to the breeder(s) of each category, a tradition that the CTBA inaugurated in 1973. Te categories are: Horse of the Year, 2-year-old male, 2-year-old female, 3-year-old male, 3-year-old female, older male, older female, sprinter, and turf horse. Champions will be honored at the CTBA’s Annual Meeting and Dinner, scheduled for March 12 at Le Méridien hotel in Arcadia near the CTBA ofces and Santa Anita. VARIETY ON DISPLAY RACING AND BREEDING PROSPECTS ARE PLENTIFUL FOR MIXED SALE

Te Chosen Vron continues to make headlines as one of the best California-breds in recent years. A half-sister to that Calbred champion and millionaire is part of the January catalog. Andy Havens’ Havens Bloodstock Agency is ofering Amazing Graze, a Cal-bred 2020 half sister to Te Chosen Vron by leading California sire Grazen. Te unraced flly, hip #77, is out of the Tiz Wonderful mare Tiz Molly. California Chrome will always be popular in the Golden State, and he is also the all-time leading Cal-bred earner. He appears on the catalog page of hip #113, the 2019 mare Danzing Surprise from Sue Greene’s Woodbridge Farm consignment. An unraced daughter of Danzing Candy, Danzing Surprise is out of R Sunday Surprise, a full sister to California Chrome. Sire power will also be on display at the January sale. Leading California sire Stay Tirsty has 13 2-year-olds in the catalog, 12 in the consignment of Terry Lovingier’s Lovacres Farm and one from Shane Easterbrook’s Dehesa Farms. Four of the fve racing prospects in the Lovacres group are also by Stay Tirsty, who stands at Lovacres. Dehesa is ofering several yearlings as well, including hip #74. THE SON OF PETRONE WAS AN EARLY CAL-BRED MILLIONAIRE

he term “hard-knocking” could have been coined for Silveyville. Te California-bred was never as fashy as some of his state-bred contemporaries. He simply went out and did his job, winning often, but also earning a decent paycheck nearly every time he faced the starter. During Silveyville’s long career in the 1980s, Cal-breds such as Snow Chief, Brown Bess, and Fran’s Valentine grabbed more headlines, with Eclipse Awards, Cal-bred championships, and national classics. But Silveyville collected several Cal-bred trophies himself, including Horse of the Year in 1984, and he became one of the early Cal-bred millionaires.

He and Brown Bess had their sire, Petrone, in common, which may have accounted for both of them being able to race successfully for so many years. Silveyville began his career at 2 in Northern California and competed throughout the state through age 9, with a record of 56 starts, 19 wins, 11 seconds, and eight thirds for total earnings of $1,282,880. Silveyville may also have competed at more California racetracks than any other Cal-bred, and he did it while taking time of to stand at stud toward the end of his career. He appeared at nine California tracks, beginning with Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields. He toured through the fair circuit of Pleasanton, Solano, Stockton, and Sacramento before competing at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, and Del Mar. He won at six of those tracks. William and Moira Tanaka bred Silveyville in 1978 from their Successor mare Zurina, and Kjell Qvale, a major Northern California track executive, bought him as a yearling for $11,000 at the 1979 California Toroughbred Breeders Association winter mixed sale. Named for a long-ago Gold Rush town, Silveyville became a powerhouse for Qvale, despite a foot fracture at age 2 that required the insertion of two screws. Pat Seeley trained Silveyville in Northern California, and Bruce Headley trained him in Southern California. Headley also rode Silveyville in the mornings, and his daughter, Karen, today a trainer, recalls those days.

“Because he rode them all, he always knew what he had,” Karen said. Tough Karen was too young at the time to gallop the racehorses herself, she does recall going out on the pony with Silveyville. “He was always a gentleman,” she said. “And he had to have had a great mind because my dad bred all of his mares to him.” Unfortunately, Silveyville didn’t pass his ability on to his ofspring. Karen says that her father learned from that experience the importance of breeding speed into every pedigree. Silveyville liked to run long on the turf, but he was precocious enough to win three Derbies—at Sacramento, Bay Meadows, and Hollywood Park, the latter the frst time that race was switched to a turf event. He won a total of 14 stakes, six of them graded. He raced against some of the best, including the legendary John Henry. In the 1984 Carleton F. Burke Handicap (G2T), Silveyville defeated 1982 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Gato Del Sol and gave Bruce Headley his frst $100,000 stakes win. Te inaugural Breeders’ Cup happened that year, overshadowing Silveyville reaching millionaire status in the On Trust Handicap at Hollywood Park. Te CTBA honored Silveyville as the champion 3-year-old male of 1981 and older male of 1982 and 1984, in addition to his Horse of the Year title. Te only reason he didn’t have a slew of turf championships is that the CTBA didn’t ofer a divisional turf title until 1990, three years after his career ended. At the time of his retirement in early 1987, Silveyville ranked third on the all-time leading Cal-bred earners list, behind only Snow Chief and Fran’s Valentine. Today, he still ranks 35th on the list.

Te Fremont native’s frst big strike came in 2003, when Nentwig said he saw a Harris Farms homebred, Moscow Burning, bang into a rail in a claiming race in the stretch and still manage to win. He recalled telling his racing partner at the time, Dallas Van Kempen, “Tat’s a horse we ought to claim if we could.” And so they did, tagging the 3-year-old flly at Bay Meadows Fair Aug. 7, 2003, for $25,000. Trained by James Cassidy, the grass-loving daughter of Moscow Ballet went on to be a graded stakes-winning earner of $1.4 million, mostly on the Southern California

CAL-BREDS GAVE OWNER HIS START

y any measure, California horse owner Michael Nentwig and his partners have been on a roll for the past few years, racing such notable graded stakes winners as Going Global, Maxim Rate, and Ginobili, among many other standouts. Tese days, Nentwig manages a stable of 55 horses spread among half a dozen trainers for his investor group. Best known for importing turf runners from Ireland, Nentwig has come a long way since he began claiming a few horses with friends at Northern California tracks while still a college student at California State University, Hayward (now East Bay) in the 1990s. As things developed, it was a pair of California-breds—one

circuit. She then sold for $1 million to Japan’s Shadai Farm at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale in 2006. Moscow Burning came along at a time when Nentwig was at a career crossroads. Vice president of marketing for a Northern California company that produced bulky mainframe computers, he could see that the tech business was changing and, he said, “proft margins were getting thinner. I could see that what we were doing wasn’t going to last much longer.” Moscow Burning, he added, gave him confdence that racehorse ownership was a viable new direction. His second Cal-bred game changer was Te Usual Q. T., a son of Unusual Heat who earned more than $1.5 million in purses. Te bay gelding’s turf prowess produced a pair of grade 1 wins—the 2009 the Hollywood Derby and 2010 Eddie Read Handicap—and a thirdplace fnish in the 2010 TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1T) at Santa Anita (behind all-time great Goldikova and threetime Eclipse Award winner Gio Ponti). Nentwig managed Te Usual Q. T., also trained by Cassidy, for partners Don Van Racing and George Saadeh. Te Usual Q. T. was out of the Western Fame mare Lunge; they had claimed Lunge for $20,000 and raced her four times before they bred her in the name of Carlee Van Kempen. Partnership management was still new to Nentwig, he said, but “I knew coming out of that (Te Usual Q. T.’s

“I really like getting people who enjoy the game into horse ownership,” he said. “It’s rewarding when you see the look on their faces the frst time a horse they own a part of is leading in the stretch and goes on to win. Some of my best friends are involved with these horses, friends I’ve met through racing. It’s great to win with other people. When there are several owners, nobody gets hurt if things don’t work out, but when they do, everyone gets to share in the experience.” Nentwig has developed a strong pipeline for scouting and acquiring Irishbreds, but horses bred in California remain an important part of his business. Among his top recent stakes-winning Cal-breds are 2019 Snow Chief Stakes victor Our Silver Oak, as well as Madison Rae, winner of the Soviet Problem in December. “It pays to be a Cal-bred; that’s the saying and that’s the truth,” Nentwig said. “I try to buy four or fve Cal-breds every year. I’m always looking for a good Cal-bred. If you aren’t doing that, you’re nuts!”

Well, cashing a couple of Pick 6 tickets also helped.” Nentwig, now 48 and living in Del Mar, where his home overlooks Del Mar racetrack, credits Melinda, his wife of nearly 20 years, for everything that’s happened. “She has been right by my side and has always backed me up through the good times and bad in racing,” he said. “I truly wouldn’t be where I am in racing without her. Having a supportive wife makes all the diference in this game.” At the root of it all has been a decision to concentrate on turf racing, Nentwig said. “I really can’t compete with the Bob Baferts and guys like that who have so many resources. I’ve always liked turf racing more and I’ve been successful there, so that’s become our niche. I tell people I could care less about winning the Kentucky Derby. I’d rather win the Breeders’ Cup Mile or Turf.” Partners such as John Rochfort, Ray Pagano, and Sandra Benowitz have “been with me through everything,” Nentwig said. Other familiar names in his ownership group are Roger Newman, Saul Gevertz, Jef Byer, and Dan Weiner. Nentwig also has partnered with Slam Dunk Racing and its managing partner, Nick Cosato, over the years and enjoyed much success with Maxim Rate and Drain the Clock, both grade 1 winners, and many others. Irish-bred mare Going Global, winner of the 2021 Del Mar Oaks (G1T) as well as several other graded stakes while banking more than $1.1 million for Rochfort, Michael Dubb, Gevertz, Nentwig, and Pagano, is the group’s biggest success story. Te 2018 mare was recently retired after being sold to Australian interests for $2.5 million at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall mixed sale in 2022. Nentwig is a big believer in partnerships, and he advises newcomers that the best way to enjoy a “rewarding experience” is to own small percentages in several horses.

Foals with diarrhea shortly after birth can deteriorate rapidly, so it is important for a veterinarian to check on foals early

of Clostridium bacteria. Tese are hardy, spore-forming bacteria that are often present in soil and sometimes in the GI tract of animals. Some species of Clostridia cause other diseases, including tetanus, botulism, black disease, malignant edema, and blackleg. Some very efective vaccines exist for protecting calves, lambs, and goat kids against several types of Clostridium perfringens, which cause severe GI tract infections in young animals. But no vaccine has yet been produced and

In recent years there’s also been discovery of some new toxin genes that afect foals, according to Dr. Gary Magdesian, a professor of equine critical care at the University of California, Davis. He said that the main new one is called NetF, a toxin that belongs to the same toxin superfamily as Clostridium perfringens beta toxin (CPB) and NetB toxins produced by C. perfringens. “Te NetF gene is a virulence factor that can make foals sick,” Magde-

Magdesian says it can be a challenge to prevent this disease in foals. Some breeders who have had serious problems in foals have resorted to using the cattle vaccine in pregnant mares in an extra-label manner, under guidance of their veterinarians, to build immunity and create antibodies that would then be present in colostrum to help protect the foals. Tere are some downsides to using the cattle vaccine. Tere have been a few reports of serious side efects, such as abscesses at the injection site. Since this is of-label use, it should only be used if recommended by your own veterinarian. “Because it’s not approved for horses, it’s not an ideal option,” Magdesian said. “But in some instances where outbreaks are severe and people are losing foals, it may be helpful for certain types of C. perfringens infections.” Another option might be to have an autogenous vaccine created, essentially customized to a specifc herd. “If a farm has had previous recent outbreaks, there can be autogenous vaccines made from samples collected at the farm,” Magdesian said. “Tis can be done on a case-by-case basis. Accelerated hydrogen peroxide (AHP) is a disinfectant that can also be used in higher concentrations to reduce numbers.” AHP is a trademark for a solution of hydrogen peroxide in which antibacterial efcacy is enhanced by a surfactant and an organic acid. It is also a disinfectant/cleaning agent that stabilizes hydrogen peroxide so that it can be used for extended periods of time. “Bleach can also knock clostridial numbers down,” Magdesian said. “But is not as ideal because organic matter inactivates it. Breeders should work with their veterinarian for advice on what would be best to utilize in their own situation, and how to use it.” For farms that are having outbreaks, Magdesian recommends foaling mares outside, on grass pastures, whenever possible—if the weather is good enough. “Tis can be better than putting

Whenever possible, clean, green is best—out on grass and in the sunshine.” Another part of prevention strategy is to clean the mare prior to foaling. “Washing the mare before you put her in the foaling stall can be helpful, and also just before foaling,” Magdesian said. “Pay particular attention to cleaning her udder, hind legs, perineum, tail,

and any other areas the foal will nuzzle and try to suck while seeking the udder. If the foal ingests clostridial spores that are on the mare’s udder or tail before he gets colostrum, this sets up the perfect circumstances for clostridial diarrhea.” It is not necessarily this simple, however, as trypsin inhibitors in colostrum can also protect some forms of clostridial toxins from digestion by the stomach. “We also recommend picking out the mare’s feet and scrubbing her feet with a shampoo, as well,” Magdesian said. Some types of Clostridium perfringens can be a normal inhabitant of the equine GI tract. “C. perfringens is often found in low numbers in normal, healthy horses, especially those bacteria that lack the virulence genes,” Magdesian said. “It can be a numbers game. “If you fnd it in low numbers in some of the horses, manure control is very important. Cleaning stalls daily or twice daily to prevent buildup of manure and spores will help. If you can clean out a pile of manure before the mare tramples it and spreads it all over the stall (or lies in it), this will limit the spread of clostridial spores. Also, make sure foals get adequate colostrum and are healthy from the time of birth, to minimize the development of diarrhea.” Some of the more severe cases of diarrhea are caused by Type C. “Tis type causes hemorrhagic diarrhea and has a higher mortality rate associated with it,” Magdesian said. “It can be shed by adult horses or other livestock in manure. If there have been cattle, sheep, or goats in the barn or foaling areas, this can create a greater risk.” Tese animals may have Types C or D, but foals are not susceptible to type D. Another thing that’s important is to make sure the mare is brought to the foaling environment (the breeding farm where she will foal) at least a month or six weeks before she foals. Tis will give her time to settle in and not be stressed at the time of foaling. She will also develop antibodies to the pathogens in that environment. “She will be exposed to the disease organisms there and enrich her colos-

Weather may be a factor in the number of cases in a certain year. “I don’t think there’s been any documentation regarding weather and amount of precipitation, and this will vary with the geography, but if mares are foaling in muddy conditions rather than on grass pasture, this could make a diference,” Magdesian said. “In general, bacteria prefer moist conditions because they need moisture to replicate. It’s hard to clean up manure when things are wet.”

Bio-Sponge is a smectite product that may bind clostridial toxins. “Another thing that vets may use is anti-toxin or plasma with antibodies directed against clostridial toxins or antigens, particularly for Type C (the livestock antitoxin is for Type C and D) and type A (in plasma products). We only use the antitoxin made for livestock in severe cases because there is some risk for allergic reactions to those products.” If the foal is in pain, the veterinarian may also recommend pain medication. “Sometimes we use Banamine, but try to minimize it because it can reduce perfusion to the gut and kidneys,” Magdesian said. “We’ll use low doses, or use

You have a better chance of saving the foal if you discover a problem early and start treating it quickly. “Have a veterinarian check the foal right away and don’t wait to see if it gets better,” Magdesian advised. “With C. perfringens or C. difcile, these foals can deteriorate rapidly. Often we treat foals with a presumptive diagnosis. We don’t wait for test results or the foal might be dead by the time we get the results.” Foals are not only becoming dehydrated due to diarrhea, but the toxins can cause them to quickly go into shock, which can be difcult to reverse, and they soon die. “Te specifc treatment is metronidazole given orally or intravenously,” Magdesian said. “In severe cases, we’ll use it intravenously (since we’re giving IV fuids to these foals anyway). Sometimes the foals have ileus; the gut is shut down and not moving, so any medicine given orally will be inefective. Any time a foal is colicky or his gut is distended/bloated and he’s in pain, we’ll administer the drug intravenously instead of orally. “Another important aspect of treatment in these foals is good supportive care. Tey often need critical care/ intensive care, with IV fuids and broad-spectrum antibiotics to prevent sepsis, and hemodynamic support— which means making sure they are hydrated and blood pressure is adequate.” Without quick treatment and care, these foals will often go into shock and 38

it just for short periods. We sometimes use opioid drugs like butorphanol to reduce severe gut pain, if the foal is colicky or distended. “We may also use lactase enzyme given orally. Te clostridial infections are often associated with lactase defciency. Te foals may get a more severe or persistent diarrhea because of lactose intolerance. Te clostridial organisms damage the intestinal lining and cause denuding of the little micro-villi in the small intestine that synthesize lactase. Tis makes it to where the foal can’t digest milk properly. “An important part of treatment is therefore to temporarily reduce the foal’s milk intake. Sometimes we hold a foal of milk completely if he has severe diarrhea, colic, or abdominal distension. If the diarrhea is severe or the foal is colicky, we may hold him of milk for 12 to 24 hours and administer intravenous feedings during that time.”
