California Breeding Loses a Friend

C

Murdock had managed Rancho San Miguel for 32 years, frst when it was a training center owned by Dr. William Marano and then after Tom and Nancy Clark purchased it in 2000. “Te primary reason I bought the farm was because of Clay,” said Tom Clark. “I was already a client of the farm for well on 10 years. I knew Clay very well, and it was an easy decision for me, given how much I cared for him and how much confdence I had in his ability to maintain the farm and grow it.” Murdock helped the Clarks transition Rancho San Miguel from a training to a breeding facility. “He did that brilliantly,” said Clark. At the time of his death, Murdock was helping the California breeding industry on several levels. Appointed to the CTBA board in early 2018, he was working with other board members to improve all aspects of the business. With Adrian Gonzalez, he had recently completed purchase of the Northern Hemisphere breeding rights to Sir Prancealot, who will shuttle between Australia and Rancho San Miguel beginning in 2020. Te Sir Prancealot deal was so recent that the September issue of California Toroughbred had an article about it. Murdock had spoken with Tracy Gantz at Del Mar in mid-August about Sir Prancealot, and he was quoted extensively in the article. “I think for California breeding, this news is huge,” said Murdock during that interview. “People from Kentucky, Florida, all over were calling wanting to know about him. Adrian and I really believe that the future of California is in getting these types of stallions.”

COURTESY OF RANCHO SAN MIGUEL

alifornia’s breeding industry sufered a major loss Sept. 3 when Clay Murdock, the general manager of Rancho San Miguel and a CTBA board member, died suddenly at his home in his sleep. He was 58.

An astute horseman, Clay Murdock, shown with stallion Roar, has left a lasting legacy at Rancho San Miguel

Murdock was a familiar fgure at all California sales and had been planning to attend the Sept. 26 Fasig-Tipton yearling sale. Clark and others from the farm were going to celebrate Murdock’s birthday at the sale. It might not have been as big a celebration as they hosted at the farm in 2017 for Murdock’s 30th year with the farm, though considering how many friends he has in the industry, it might have grown into a good-sized group. “Te cornerstone of his success was that people really trusted him,” said Clark, who nominated Murdock for the Godolphin Toroughbred Industry Employee Awards in 2017. “We’ve got a very strong team that he has built at the farm to continue the legacy and to maintain the care of the horses that our clients expect. Te ownership is more dedicated than ever in building upon his legacy and his visions for the farm.” Murdock came to Northern California in the 1980s after growing up in Idaho, where his father, Cal, trained racing Quarter Horses part-time. Clay galloped www.ctba.com

horses and rode at bush tracks by age 12. “I was getting taller, so I knew I wasn’t going to be a jockey and was kind of set on training horses,” he once said. In California, Murdock followed the Quarter Horse circuit from north to south, working for such horsemen as Glen Walker, John Creager, and Russell Harris. He headed up Harris’ satellite training facility in Southern California for several years before going to work for Marano at Rancho San Miguel. Murdock thrived on developing Rancho San Miguel into a breeding farm. “I love closing the deal and booking mares to stallions,” he said. “I like talking to people and helping them out.” He was also a devoted family man. He and his wife, Dena, raised fve children: Camryn, Casi, Cody, Cindy, and Mitchell. Tey have six grandchildren, and Clay couldn’t have been prouder of them all. “He always kept people informed and was one of the most trustworthy people I’ve met,” said Clark. “I would have trusted him with my last nickel.”

Fravel to Te Stronach Group

ANNE M. EBERHARDT

Craig Fravel, president and CEO of Breeders’ Cup since 2011, has accepted a position as Te Stronach Group’s CEO of racing operations. He will leave Breeders’ Cup following this year’s edition of the series Nov. 1-2 at Santa Anita. Fravel will assume management and oversight of all racing operations across Stronach Group-owned tracks and training facilities. According to a press release from TSG, he will focus on implementing Caption goes here and enforcing global best practices and integrity standards for horse and rider safety in collaboration with key industry stakeholders. Craig Fravel Prior to working for Breeders’ Cup, Fravel spent more than 20 years at Del Mar. He oversaw the $80 million reconstruction of the track’s grandstand in 1992-93 and the $9 million installation of a new racing surface, completed in 2007. “I am delighted to have Craig join our company at this pivotal moment in our sport,” said Belinda Stronach, chair and president of TSG. “Craig’s stellar reputation and proven track record of leadership will enable us to further our goal to become North America’s preeminent horse racing organization as we work lockstep with industry partners to prioritize horse and rider safety.”

In other TSG management changes, Aiden Butler, chief strategy ofcer for the company, will additionally serve as acting executive director of California Racing Operations and Steve Koch was appointed senior vice president of racing. Originally from England, Butler co-founded a sports technology company, Guardlab Inc. He has also served as managing director at Gilberts LLP, where he was responsible for nationwide operations. Koch previously served as executive director of the Safety & Integrity Alliance at the National Toroughbred Racing Association, where he was responsible for managing the industry’s accreditation program and implementing national uniform standards for racetrack safety and integrity. Contact The Jockey Club at jockeyclub.com.

LORETTA VIEGA

The Jockey Club, concerned with the narrowing of the diversity of the Thoroughbred gene pool, announced that it is considering a rule to limit the size of a stallion’s North American book of mares. The board of stewards of The Jockey Club is considering a cap of 140 mares bred per individual stallion per calendar year in North America, phased-in, as follows: • Stallions entering stud service for the frst time in 2020 would be exempt from the 140 limit through the 2023 season

Los Alamitos Race Course

Los Alamitos Receives Fifth Week After allocating a diferent Southern California racing calendar for 2020 than in previous years at its August meeting, the California Horse Racing Board at its September meeting revised the calendar again to grant Los Alamitos a total of fve weeks of racing rather than four. Los Alamitos’ dates for 2020 will be June 24-July 7 and Dec. 2-22. Te track still will no longer conduct racing in September at the time previously allocated to the Pomona county fair at Fairplex. Instead, Santa Anita will run those dates. Te complete Southern California racing dates schedule approved by the CHRB for 2020 is as follows: Santa Anita, Dec. 25, 2019, through June 23, 2020; Los Alamitos, June 24-July 7, Del Mar, July 8 (opening July 18) through Sept. 8; Santa Anita, Sept. 9-Oct. 27; Del Mar, Oct. 28-Dec. 1; and Los Alamitos, designated as “Fairplex at Los Alamitos,” Dec. 2-22. Start dates allocated are Wednesdays, and stop dates are Tuesdays. Tus, the actual racing dates will difer since racetrack managements sometimes prefer to begin on a Friday and traditionally end on a Sunday. At the August meeting, the CHRB designated that the Santa Anita winter-spring dates include 12 days that must be taken of during that six-month stretch. Tose dates were not specifcally listed, intended to give Santa Anita fexibility to cancel racing due to severe weather, insufcient entries, or other circumstances. 8

A trip to Ferndale is a step back in time

to Ferndale

BY JACK SHINAR

I

didn’t know if Ferndale would be the cure-all for my troubles, but as the misery index in Sacramento clicked up to 107 degrees just a few days after my ailing father had passed away, I knew it was worth a try.

And so we packed up the Ford and made the six-hour drive to the remote coast (seven hours if you use State Route 36—DON’T DO IT!), arriving at the northwest corner of the state in mid-August for the opening weekend of the 2019 Humboldt County 22

Fair racing meet. Tis half-mile oasis in the redwoods about 17 miles southwest of Eureka had been on my bucket list for decades: Ferndale, jokingly called the “Saratoga of the West.” Horse racing friends and colleagues had regaled us with the joys of turning back the clock—way back—in this charming Victorian-era hamlet on the edge of California’s Lost Coast. I’ve been to racetracks big and small all over the map; this summer, I would, as it turned out, fnally add Ferndale to the places where I failed to cash a ticket. Who needs to pick a winner? At the

Cal-bred Thoroughbreds make important contributions to Humboldt County Fair’s race meet

DEBBIE ARRINGTON PHOTOS

Humboldt County Fair the felds are generally small (the starting gate holds eight, but is rarely full) and the gambling is secondary. Ferndale has something more. What I found in Ferndale was exactly what I had hoped for. Te weather was great and the air clean. Tere was pure joy in the crowded grandstand, which can hold about 2,000 fans. Friendly faces crowded together on the track apron while still others camped out on blankets and portable chairs on the grassy area bordering the saddling paddock. Te track, which sits on the edge of town next door to Ferndale High School, and the grandstand face mountains in the distance, dense with gigantic redwoods. To call it picturesque is an understatement. And people there love horse racing. Tis was a feeling I hadn’t had since probably in the 1980s, back before simulcasting and, later, account wagering from home pretty much emptied the tracks of fans except for only the biggest of race days. At Ferndale the buzz between races from the crowd of close to 6,000 never stopped. It was electric, invigorating, and a whole lot of fun. “On a big weekend race day we’ll have 7,000 come through here,” said Richard Conway, the Humboldt County Fair general manager for the past seven years and a former horse trainer himself. “It’s a different feel; it’s a community event. Horse racing is a huge draw for us. On a non-race day, our attendance is light. Racing’s an annual event, and it’s huge. You’ll have people who’ve been coming here for 30 years, and you’ll see the same people in the same spot every day.” Te Saratoga comparison is tonguein-cheek, of course, although both tracks date back to the 1800s with grandstands to match. At Ferndale, they usually run a mule race, an Arabian race, and fve or six Toroughbred heats, mostly in the $4,000 claiming range or thereabouts. It hardly compares to upstate New York, where world-class runners contest races at some of the highest purse levels anywhere. But Ferndale’s old wooden grandstand and the betting area below with wooden foors do remind one of, say, a small slice of Saratoga. “You run at Aqueduct or Belmont, that’s one thing,” Conway said. “Tey have important races, and they run for big purses.

Like Saratoga’s, Ferndale’s grandstand dates back to the 1800s

But when you are in Saratoga (during the race season), you get the sense that everyone is there for a reason. Tat’s Saratoga. “But that’s kind of the same thing in Ferndale. Te whole town comes to life. It’s funny—it’s hard to describe. But if you walk through the grandstand, you kind of pick up on it. It’s more about the attitude.” Conway said the two-week fair puts about $8 million into the local economy. Everywhere you go in town, businesses posted signs advertising the fair. Still other signs announced: “Racing starts at 2 p.m.” Te town seems nearly empty while racing is in progress. “Te local businesses really step up,” Conway said. “Whether it’s giving away gift certifcates or gift cards for gasoline, the community supports this event.” Tere was more at stake this year, noted Conway, because cuts in state funding had left the fair with a $300,000 shortfall that had to be made up through local sponsorships and community support. www.ctba.com

“Tis year will be the highest ever for our sponsorship program. We will cover the entire $300,000. For a community of 100,000, that’s pretty good.” I wasn’t the only visiting racetracker to make the pilgrimage. Veteran trainer Art Sherman of California Chrome fame was on hand, not to saddle a horse but to experience the Ferndale magic for the frst time. He and track announcer Chris Grifn regaled about 1,000 fans with old war stories prior to the races, and Sherman stuck around for most of the afternoon posing with fairgoers for pictures and signing autographs. “I said, ‘Tis time, I’m going to make time’ because I don’t know how long these tracks are going to be around,” said 82-year-old Sherman. “I said, ‘I’ve got to come up here.’ And I’m so happy I did. I’m having such a good time. We were walking around town—we had a ball. Tis is fun. It really is.” Grifn, now the voice of California fair

He beat longshot Bluegrass Faith by 13⁄4 lengths in 1:11.72. Tap Back fnished third. “Te draw worked well for us—he liked it out there,” said Prat. “When we got to the stretch, he went well.” Callaghan noted that the outside post especially helped “with the speed horses down on the inside.” Te trainer admitted that the win helped compensate for the disqualifcation in the Graduation. “We got a split when, of course, we wanted a sweep,” Callaghan said. “Tis is a nice horse, and we think Mr. Zetcher and Qatar Racing will have some fun with him.”

IRISH NATIVE FINDS HIS RACING DREAM IN THE GOLDEN STATE

reland native Francis O’Leary was always interested in racing back home, but a move to California in 2008 made the dream of owning racehorses and broodmares possible. Now O’Leary has expanded his reach to include co-ownership in a stallion, Gig Harbor. Te frst horse O’Leary ever claimed was Hava Java, a 4-year-old California-bred daughter of Speed Dial who won on the day by fve lengths at Golden Gate Fields. O’Leary, who had been attending the races regularly that season before he made the plunge into ownership, took her for $5,000 from trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and turned her over to trainer William Morey. Hava Java won three times for her

new connections before she was claimed away just about four months later. Tat experience got the ball rolling for O’Leary, who has owned a host of horses either solo or in partnership. “I got into the breeding side shortly after,” he said. Te man who introduced him to the breeding aspect of the sport was Joe Daehling, who owns Daehling Ranch in Elk Grove. “I have to thank him,” O’Leary said. Several of O’Leary’s mares are boarded at Daehling Ranch, with others at Ellen Jackson’s Victory Rose Toroughbreds in Vacaville. O’Leary owns 15 mares, many of whom visited Gig Harbor this year. was a multiple stakes winner at Golden Gate Fields. He broke his maiden there frst out in 2011, then added an allowance race shortly thereafter. Tird in the Harry Henson Stakes at Hollywood Park, Gig Harbor returned to Golden Gate to win the $75,000 Alcatraz Stakes going 11⁄16 miles on the grass. As a 4-year-old, Gig Harbor added an allowance and the $53,000 Oakland Stakes before retirement. Gig Harbor stands at Victory Rose Toroughbreds for $2,000. He has nine winners from 13 starters (69%), and 50% of his foals of racing age, which includes nine juveniles, have all raced. His leading earner is two-time winner Kerri’s Choice, and he is the sire of a two-time winner in 2019, Shadrack. “I’m pretty excited about him,” O’Leary said of the chestnut stallion, one of only two sons of City Zip standing in the state. “I think he’s an up-and-coming sire that is of to a good start. Not too many mares were bred to him in the past, but this year he got close to 40 mares.” On the track O’Leary is currently involved in 10 runners, six of which he owns outright, with the other four in partnership. On Raglan Road, by Sought After— Sparks Flying, by Najran, has made nine starts in 2019, for one win and seven topthree fnishes. He has earned $68,576. Homebred On Raglan Road broke his maiden at Golden Gate April 27, driving home to win by four lengths under Silvio Amador.

Another class runner for the outft is a second homebred son of Sought After, Autumn Day. Te 4-year-old out of the eight-time winning Candi’s Gold mare Woodford Princess has won three of 11 lifetime starts, with three second-place eforts. Jamey Tomas trains the bay gelding, who won two races over the summer at Sacramento and Golden Gate. O’Leary co-owns Autumn Day with Tomas, Gregory Garber, Mallory and Stefan Kowalow, James Marsden, and Rob Smolich. Although he has sold outright via auction—in 2015, an O’Learybred son of Idiot Proof topped the Northern California yearling sale at $72,000—O’Leary prefers to fnd partners for the horses he breeds. “I try to stay in on most of them, but it’s not always easy,” he said. Other horses he has been a part of include tough 16-time winner Gilligan, 11-time winner John Paul’s Bet, and winning Cal-bred Peppered Forest, by Peppered Cat. One of his favorites was

O’Leary bred many of Unionize’s best ofspring, including winners Union Leader, Queen Helene, Union Smartie, Union Legend, and Union Wine. A lengthy partnership with Jackson has led to a solid friendship as well. “Te one thing I fnd most compelling as far as having him as a partner is that he feels very strongly that in this industry everyone needs to be beneft,” said Jackson. “He shares his business. He doesn’t use just one trainer or one farm; he spreads it around. Tat’s an amazing sentiment. He wants to share the wealth, and he’s brought a lot of people into the industry.” She added, “He’s really considerate with his animals. If you say something is wrong, he takes you at your word. He really cares about them, loves them, and loves the industry.” Joe Daehling, the man responsible for O’Leary’s leap into the breeding industry, said, “He knows how to select a good stallion and how to fnd a good mare. He’s a very pleasant person to be around, and horses are in his Irish blood.”

to have the horse evaluated by a veterinarian. Or they may not know what’s wrong, but they realize the horse’s performance is not what it should be. “Sometimes the only clue is a change in behavior, or bad behavior under saddle,” said Dr. Amy Johnson, with Large Animal Internal Medicine at New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania. “It’s non-specifc; sometimes the horse just loses eagerness to work. It may be a horse that previously seemed to enjoy training and now doesn’t. Te horse may become increasingly spooky where

before it was calm or at least accepting or tolerant of various stimuli and now it suddenly isn’t. Or it may be unpredictable bolting, bucking, or resisting being ridden. “When we check the horse, if there is no systemic health problem or lameness that’s clearly the cause of poor performance, we do a neurologic evaluation— and sometimes that does end up being the root of the issue. In horses, usually the signs are consistent with spinal cord disease, specifcally in the neck region; all four limbs are not moving as precisely

PROBLEMS IN HORSES

and coordinated as they should be. Tese signs are consistent with what we would call general proprioceptive ataxia.” With any of the neurological diseases, there is a spectrum of severity. Some horses continue to work with mild neurologic disease. “Te disease may progress over time, and then the horse struggles to maintain performance,” said Johnson. “Or it may be that the horse develops a second problem, such as lameness or something else that makes the horse uncomfortable or not feel well. “My opinion is that many horses can compensate fairly well for a single issue or a single problem, but if you start stacking on more problems, some of the compensatory mechanisms begin to fall apart. If the horse is lame, some of the neurologic signs may become more evident. “It can be tricky to know how much the neurologic problem is contributing to the overall picture. In some cases it clearly is the primary reason for poor performance, and in other cases there may be something else at play as well.”

the most common infectious neurologic disease in horses and can sometimes mimic wobbler’s disease—though you might see additional clues that the horse is sufering from EPM. Horses with EPM tend to have asymmetric signs, more muscle atrophy, or maybe even some signs that would be noticed when examining the head that would be indicative of disease in the brain stem in addition to the spinal cord.

NEUROLOGIC DISEASES

“Most of the neurologic diseases we see most commonly cause signs consistent with a cervical myelopathy, which just means dysfunction of the spinal cord in the neck region,” said Johnson. “Although many diseases can afect the cervical spinal cord, most afected horses fall into one of three categories.” Te horse might have a compressive myelopathy. “Te most well-known condition is cervical vertebral stenotic myelopathy (CVSM), often called wobbler disease. But other things like trauma, tumors, or abscesses can put pressure on the spinal cord. Something is physically compressing the spinal cord, and that’s what causes the clinical signs. Tis category of disease is relatively common because wobblers and neck arthritis causing secondary spinal cord compression is moderately common in older horses. “Te second category of neurologic diseases that are relatively common are infectious diseases. EPM (equine protozoal myeloencephalitis) is far and away

An abnormal posture could be indicative of a deeper neurologic problem

“In theory, neurologic Lyme disease could afect this region of the spinal cord, but is rare, in my experience. If it’s summer and the horse has not been vaccinated against West Nile, that virus could infect the spinal cord.” Te third category is degenerative disease, and Johnson says this is the trickiest to diagnose. “Tis category goes by two diferent names, but they are basically the same disease—equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy (EDM) and neuroaxomal dystrophy (NAD). Vitamin E defciency likely plays a role, but it’s not the only contributing factor. Genetics and possibly some environmental factors are likely important. I am seeing an increased number of horses with this condition, and I don’t know why.” In earlier years, veterinarians generally linked this disease with young horses www.ctba.com

that were vitamin E defcient. “Tese horses started showing clinical signs at an early age—by the time they were just 1 or 2 years old,” said Johnson. “Ten the incidence of this problem diminished, perhaps because horsemen got smarter about supplementing with vitamin E. We were not seeing this disease very commonly anymore. Ten in my personal case population, over the last couple of years the number of EDM cases I’ve diagnosed has surpassed the number of EPM cases or even wobblers, and these are not young horses.” In many cases, the horses were middle aged. “Along with ataxia and incoordination, there is often a behavior change— usually bad behavior,” said Johnson. “Te owner, trainer, or rider frst notices the bolting, spooking, rearing, bucking, etc. that is out of character for that horse. Ten later we start to detect the mild to moderate ataxia. “I don’t know why there has been a resurgence of this disease—whether these horses did have some vitamin E defciency when they were young and it is manifesting later in life, or if it’s something else. I don’t know what the cause might be, but this is an important differential for me right now, for any horse with neurologic signs that may originate in the spinal cord, because I’ve seen a lot of these cases.” If a horse has neurologic problems consistent with spinal cord disease in the neck region, Johnson says it’s most likely one of three things—a compressive lesion, infectious disease (probably EPM), or a neurodegenerative disorder. “We have pretty good tests at this point for diagnosing EPM, especially if we can take a sample of spinal fuid. When we compare the antibody titers in the blood and in the spinal fuid, we can with fairly high accuracy determine whether or not the horse has EPM. “We also have pretty good tests for diagnosing spinal cord compression, with a combination of survey radiographs and then myelography. More and more clinics and universities now have the ability to do CTs of the neck regions (with or without contrast), so we can usually get a good idea whether or not there is

in a horse that has been doing well in an athletic career. Trying to fgure out the cause can be tricky, even though it might be helpful to try to diagnose it early rather than later. “Sometimes this is hard to do, however, because signs in the beginning can be so subtle that you don’t recognize them as indicating a medical problem,” said Johnson. “Many of these horses might go through some frustrating periods where the owner, rider, or trainer thinks it’s a training issue or a behavioral problem and then later we realize that it’s actually a medical or neurologic issue that prompted the behavior.” If owners, riders, and trainers can be aware of possible neurologic conditions, they might pick up on this quicker. “Most veterinarians are already onto this, but when a horse is presented for poor performance, it probably benefts everyone to do a neurologic exam early on,” said Johnson. “Most people immediately assume it’s a lameness issue or gastric ulcers because these are certainly more common. But it can be important to still do a neurologic exam, even if it’s just to be able to say that the horse is neurologically normal and to be able to rule out any neurologic disease.” PHOTOS COURTESY OF DR. STEVE TROSTLE

spinal cord compression.” For the degenerative conditions, however, the only way to currently diagnose these is to look at the brain and spinal cord under a microscope, which can only be done at necropsy. “So to come to that diagnosis in a live horse, we have to rule out everything else and assume it is EDM or NAD,” said Johnson. “If we have a horse with neurologic disease that’s negative for EPM and has no evidence of spinal Radiographs are helpful in diagnosing spinal cord compression, cord compression (with especially when used in conjunction with myelographs the tests we commonly use), we say we are suspicious the horse has borderline or low levels of this vihas a neurodegenerative disorder, even tamin. ith the yearling sales rapidly approaching, breeders should be aware that foals of 2018 are the frst ones whose registration certifcates from Te Jockey Club will be digital, rather than paper copies. Te Jockey Club notes that breeders, as well as those who act as agents for breeders, who do not already have an Interactive Registration account should sign up for one at registry.jockeyclub.com. Te Jockey Club has also posted the following frequently asked questions regarding digital certifcates. 1. How will I receive my Digital Certifcate(s)? When you log on to your Jockey Club Interactive Registration account, you will see an option under DIGITAL CERTIFICATES labeled CERTIFICATE MANAGEMENT that will display the certifcates currently assigned to your Interactive Registration account.

2. Who is assigned the Digital Certifcate? Digital Certifcates are assigned to a Certifcate Manager, a person or entity authorized to control the disposition of a Digital Certifcate. Te Certifcate Manager may or may not be the owner of the horse. 3. How will I forward my Digital Certifcate to a sales company, racetrack, or other entity that requires the Certifcate of Foal Registration? Te Certifcate Manager will be able to assign the certifcate to another party by selecting the appropriate entity or person, clicking the button that says “Assign Certifcate,” and then following the prompts to complete the assignment. 4. How will I know when a Digital Certifcate has been assigned to my account? An email notifcation will be sent shortly after a digital certifcate(s) has been assigned to your Interactive Registration account. 5. Will all of my horses be issued a Digital Certifcate? Foals of 2018 and after will be issued Digital Certifcates.

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Earnings are from Northern Hemisphere racing and include adjusted money from Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Adjusted earnings are put on par with average North American earnings from the previous year. The average North American purse in 2018 was $23,755 or 50% of the average purse in Japan. To put earnings on par, Japanese earnings are multiplied by 50% before being applied to the total earnings above. Hong Kong earnings are adjusted by 15%, and Singapore adjusted by 66%. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through September 12, 2019.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
