T

he local commercial yearling sales kick of this month with the Northern California Sale Aug. 15 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton and with the Barretts Select Yearling Sale Aug. 29 in Del Mar. Te market for quality California-breds has shown signifcant strength the past few years, fueled by the lucrative purses both in the Golden State stakes series and in overnight races, plus the bonuses for maiden special weight winners and owners awards for horses that successfully compete in open company. Te Northern California Sale, which also includes a small number of horses of racing age, has cataloged 142 yearlings and seven S A L E S A T 2-year-olds. Tis sale continues to provide a successful outlet for consignors. A very high percentage of horses sold at this venue populate the feld sizes at Golden Gate and the Fairs, with some competing successfully in Southern California. Tis year’s catalogue is signifcantly smaller than last year’s, which should assist better in meeting the demands from buyers. Over the years this sale has proved to ofer value as purchasers have realized signifcant profts both with racing and pinhook-

ing. Many current 2-year-olds from last year’s sale have already won, with some now competing in stakes races. Te sale will once again be conducted in the Amador Pavilion. However, the entire barn area will be available, which will be much more convenient for consignors and buyers. Te walk from the stables to the auction ring will be much shorter and provide a consistent fow of horses being sold. Tis setup should be well received by all. Te third annual Barretts Select Yearling Sale, conducted at the Surfside Race Place in Del Mar, has cataloged 87 yearlings. Once again, yearlings will be conveniently stabled inside the Del Mar horse show arena, located next to the sales pavilion. D E L M A R In regard to this upcoming auction, Barretts ofcials have stated that “we strongly believe that this year’s yearlings are the very best group, in terms of quality, that our consignors have presented at this sale since its inception.” All California-breds ofered are already nominated to the Golden State Series. Both of these auctions are previewed in this edition of California Toroughbred. Good luck to all for a great summer of sales.

In July, Richard Barton was fnalizing purchase of Magali Farms in Santa Ynez, Calif. Barton’s daughter, Kate, said that the Barton family’s Toroughbred operations will be consolidated at the new farm, which will be renamed Barton Toroughbreds. She also announced the hiring of Kevin Dickson as farm manager. “We are more than excited to bring someone of this caliber on board,” said Kate Barton. “Kevin’s experience will be such an asset in the transition and development of the farm.” Under the Magali banner, Rich and Gaby Sulpizio have owned the Santa Ynez property since 2001, with Tom Hudson as the farm manager. Te acreage was previously Richard Eamer’s Mandysland Farm and then an Arabian farm. Kate Barton, who also sits on the California Toroughbred Breeders Association board of directors, manages the family’s Toroughbreds. Te extensive breeding operation includes ownership of the stallion Champ Pegasus, a grade 1 winner whose frst foals are reaching the races this year. Champ Pegasus, who will stand at Barton Toroughbreds in 2018, has been standing at Legacy Ranch in Clements. Dickson for many years managed Vessels Stallion Farm in Bonsall for the Vessels family, overseeing that large Toroughbred and Quarter Horse operation along with the late Scoop Vessels. Dickson continued to manage that property when it became Ocean Breeze Ranch. Prior to working with Vessels, Dickson studied equine science at Colorado State University, worked for trainer Graeme Rogerson in Australia, and served as yearling manager at Bob Moore Farms in Norman, Okla.

HISTORY

10 YEARS AGO NASHOBA’S KEY capitalized on her Vanity Invitational Handicap (G1) victory at Hollywood Park by adding the Clement L. Hirsch Handicap (G2) Aug. 5, 2007. The flly was unusually calm in the paddock that day, worrying owner/breeder Warren Williamson and trainer Carla Gaines because she usually kicked up a fuss before a race. But she eventually reared up and then performed brilliantly. Trailing her three rivals early, she won by an easy 11⁄2 lengths under jockey Joe Talamo, getting the 11⁄16 miles in 1:48.29. Williamson bred the daughter of Silver Hawk out of the Caerleon mare Nashoba in California. She went on to be named the Cal-bred Horse of the Year that season, as well as champion older female and champion turf horse.

25 YEARS AGO Martin and Pam Wygod’s homebred BOUNTIFUL NATIVE collected two stakes victories at Del Mar in August 1992. The 4-year-old flly frst captured the $60,000 Fantastic Girl Stakes over seven furlongs Aug. 6 and then stepped into graded company to take the $100,000 Rancho Bernardo Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G3) at 6 1⁄2 furlongs Aug. 22. David Flores rode Bountiful Native in the Fantastic Girl while Pat Valenzuela piloted her in the Rancho Bernardo, in both races for trainer Dan Hendricks. Bountiful Native won the Fantastic Girl by a head over Mama Simba and the Rancho Bernardo by three-quarters of a length over Devil’s Orchid. Bountiful Native, by the Wygods’ stallion Pirate’s Bounty out of the Mr. Prospector mare A Real Native, ultimately won 11 of 28 races for earnings of $468,475.

50 YEARS AGO TIME TO LEAVE put together a memorable racing career, winning stakes throughout her native state of California. But her frst stakes victory came as a 2-year-old at Del Mar. In the Aug. 2, 1967, Junior Miss Stakes she demonstrated the talent that was to come, defeating Esquimau Pie by a half-length under jockey Dean Hall. John Canty trained the diminutive flly, who would become a fan favorite before she fnished her career, winning 23 of 49 races, with 13 seconds and one third. Neil McCarthy bred the daughter of Father John from his homebred Novarullah mare Now Go. McCarthy tried never to miss one of her races, once saying, “I would crawl on my knees just to see her race.”

CAL-BRED SISTER EXACTA California-bred full sisters Dis Smart Cat and Discatsonthesquare completed a unique Exacta in the ninth race at Santa Anita July 4. Trainer Matt Chew sent out the sisters in the same race, and they fnished one-two. Those who bet the unusual team in the $1 Exacta received $44.40. Dis Smart Cat is the younger, having been foaled in 2013, while Discatsonthesquare is two years older. They are both by Square Eddie out of the Menifee mare Categorize. Kevin Devincenzi bred them, and Papagallo Racing Stables owns them. Gary Stevens rode Dis Smart Cat while Drayden Van Dyke piloted Discatsonthesquare. Both runners closed ground late in the allowance optional claimer. Dis Smart Cat defeated her sibling by a half-length, running the six furlongs in 1:10.73.

Jack Arterburn Former jockey and trainer Jack Arterburn died May 31 in Woodside, Calif. He was 81. As a rider, Arterburn piloted such horses as Any Time Lady, who won the 1976 Santa Clara Stakes, and California-bred Never Slipping, winner of the 1977 Silky Sullivan Handicap. He trained from 1978-2000, saddling the likes of Cal-bred Greager, winner of the 1988 Determine Stakes. Arterburn bred Greager in partnership and owned him with his wife, Sue Ann. In addition to his wife of 63 years, Arterburn is survived by four children, all of whom are in the racing industry. Son Lonnie is a trainer, and son Tim is a retired trainer. Daughter Jacalene Calvario worked at Bay Meadows for 30 years, and daughter Tami is married to Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze

Ivan Puhich Veteran jockey agent Ivan Puhich died June 19 at age 89. A California native, Puhich grew up in Washington and got his start in racing in that state. He served as a jockey agent to such Southern California-based riders as Tyler Baze, Mario Gutierrez, Marco Castenda, and Bill Mahorney and was a popular fgure at the racetrack. He retired several years ago and was living in San Diego. Puhich began at the track by selling newspapers and as a hotwalker. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II, seeing combat in the South Pacifc and later serving in China. He once obtained leave so that he could attend the 1948 Kentucky Derby. “I’ll never forget it,” Puhich later recalled. “I hitchhiked back there in uniform and got in free. Calumet ran one-two with Citation and Coaltown.” Puhich was Gutierrez’ agent when the jockey won the 2012 Kentucky Derby on I’ll Have Another. Puhich is survived by his daughter, Robin Freeman; three grandchildren; and a nephew, trainer Michael Puhich.

Harvey Furgatch Harvey Furgatch, who served on the California Horse Racing Board and owned racehorses, died recently. He was 90. A tenacious defender of civil rights, Furgatch was a vocal member of the CHRB. During his tenure he sent his racehorses outside of California to compete because he said he felt that would avoid even the appearance of a confict of interest. He worked to improve medication regulations as well as the living conditions of backstretch employees. A World War II veteran who attended the University of Wisconsin, Furgatch moved to San Diego in 1951. He formed the American Housing Guild and served as president of the local American Civil Liberties Union.

Stormin Fever Stormin Fever, the last stallion to stand for the Mabee family’s Golden Eagle Farm, had to be euthanized June 22 due to the infrmities of old age. He was 23. Golden Eagle bought Stormin Fever in 2008 after he had stood several seasons in Kentucky. The stallion stood at Golden Eagle Farm in Ramona from 2008-14, followed by two seasons at Rancho Temescal. He was then pensioned and lived the rest of his life at Golden Eagle. The late Edward “Ned” Evans bred and raced Stormin Fever, a son of Storm Cat—Pennant Fever, by Seattle Slew. The colt won eight of 21 races, including the 1998 Sport Page Handicap (G3), for earnings of $484,664 and placed in several graded stakes. Stormin Fever’s stakes winners include 2010 Canadian Horse of the Year Biofuel and grade 1 winners Sweet Talker, Check the Label, and Tarlow.

Foundation Collection Includes Leamington Painting Te California Toroughbred Foundation is the custodian of one of the West Coast’s most prestigious equine art collections, much of which adorns the walls of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association’s Arcadia ofces. One of the standout pieces is an Leamington, 1857, by A.F. de Prades original, centuries-old portrait of one of the world’s most infuential stallions by one of Europe’s most important equestrian artists. A painting of oils on canvas titled Leamington, 1857, by A. F. (Alfred Frank) de Prades, features a profle of the great horse, with a jockey astride, set on a grassy knoll against a cloudy sky. Leamington was arguably one of the most important sires of the second half of the 19th century. Foaled in England, he raced from age 2 through 7, winning six stakes, including the prestigious Goodwood Stakes in 1857, the year the painting was completed. He was imported to the United States in 1866, where his ofspring included Aristides, winner of the frst Kentucky Derby in 1875, and Iroquois, the frst American horse to win the Epsom Derby and St. Leger Stakes (1878). He was North America’s leading sire four times (1875, 1877, 1879, and 1881). De Prades was a French-born equine artist born in 1820 and was a prominent painter between 1844 and 1867. While contemporaries may be better known, de Prades’ art was greatly valued by owners and his portraits remain rare commodities. His paintings were exhibited at the British Institute from 1858-67, and at the Crystal Palace in 1889. He was known for his highly colored, impeccably drawn horses, which were fnished with refned oil paint. In addition to horse racing art, de Prades is cherished in the art world for his Russian, Spanish, and military subjects, all of which featured horses as prominent and essential elements. De Prades died in 1890, and his work continues to be highly prized with collectors around the world. De Prades’ oil painting of Leamington was so well respected and sought after that a full-color poster print was produced and sold by an English print company in London. Both the original and one of the poster prints are among the CTF’s art collection.

Steinmann, who originally hailed from Switzerland, had his frst homebred winner, Tessie E., in 1980. Since then he has collected stakes victories with numerous horses, his frst exceptional standout being Swiss Yodeler. Tat chestnut son of Eastern Echo—Drapeau, by Raja Baba, was purchased for $60,000 as a yearling and ultimately earned $761,442. Although he only won six of his 24 starts, Swiss Yodeler was a three-time graded stakes winner, including the $580,850 Hollywood Futurity (G1), and raced against some of the very best, including Hall of Famer Silver Charm and Breeders’ Cup winner Elmhurst. Swiss Yodeler became one of California’s premier sires while standing in the state from 1999 to 2014. He sired TVG Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) winner and $2,461,490-earner Tor’s Echo among his 31 stakes winners. “Swiss Yodeler started it all,” Steinmann said. “Te frst six foals of his that I ran all won frst time out. He was amazing.” Swiss Yodeler now stands at O’Sullivan Farms in West Virginia. Te horse who took Steinmann to racing’s greatest stage was Creative Cause. Te son of Giant’s Causeway is out of the grade 1-winning California-bred mare Dream of Summer, by Siberian Summer. Te $135,000 yearling purchase broke his maiden frst out at Hollywood Park by 43⁄4 lengths, immediately signaling his talent. Steinmann’s regular conditioner, Mike Harrington, trained Creative Cause, and wheeled the colt back for a victory in the $150,000 Best Pal Stakes (G2) at Del Mar. After winning the $250,000 Norfolk Stakes (G1), Creative Cause was among the favorites for the 2011 Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). He fnished third, beaten only a length, by Eclipse Award champion Hansen and subsequent Belmont Stakes (G1) hero Union Rags. In his second start of 2012, Creative Cause won the $300,000 20

Brands (G1) and third in the Preakness Stakes (G1), behind winner I’ll Have Another. He was retired after the Preakness, fnishing his career with four wins, two seconds, and three thirds in 10 starts for earnings of $1,039,000. “He’s been a good sire,” Steinmann said. “Not an amazing one, but a very good one.” Steinmann’s 2016 runners saw a return to his roots, as both Creative Cause and Swiss Yodeler played a role in his success. Teonewewaitedfor, a Cal-bred daughter of Creative Cause— Yolo Lady, by Eastern Echo, went undefeated in her frst two tries, winning the $125,345 Landaluce Stakes at Santa Anita. Sidelined since that performance, Teonewewaitedfor recently returned to training and is pointing for a return to the races this coming fall. Steinmann-bred Swiss Minister, by Lucky Pulpit out of the Swiss Yodeler mare Alpine Echo, was stakes-placed in 2015 and has gone on to win fve of his 19 races. Homebred Yodelsong, by Torn Song, won twice last year, while Swiss Minister’s younger half sister by Empire Way, Alpenhorn, broke her maiden by 31⁄4 lengths at Santa Anita. She returned to the races in July, winning an allowance optional claiming event at Los Alamitos.

n real estate, the buzzword always seems to be “location.” In horse training, especially when it comes to working a horse, the byword is “timing.”

And it’s not an easy task, says Jose “Pepe” Aragon, chief exercise and work rider for trainer Peter Eurton and horses that include millionaire California-bred Ashleyluvssugar. It takes quite a long time to fnd the right “timing,” he says, maybe a lifetime of practice. Anything but a braggart, Aragon, a 58-year-old native of Lima,

Peru, doesn’t hesitate when he says, “I consider myself very knowledgeable about horses because I’ve been riding all my life. I bring to the horse a lot of knowledge and experience—and a lot of passion for the horse. “When I work a horse, I most often can hit the time the trainer wants right on the money. I might miss a ffth [of a second] or so, but overall, I’m where my trainer wants it. Peter gives me a target when he sends me out with a worker, and I have that in my mind as I go around there.” Often, riders are said to have a clock in their head as they take the horses around the track on a “work” day. Aragon, who says his

had that Unusual Heat temperament, the fre that he seemed to give all of his horses. Going to the track with a pony was required. He was very tough in the gate. He had little patience. “When he raced, he needed to be loaded last in the gate. Otherwise, he could lose patience and break through the gate and throw the jockey. But he was smart. Tat’s the sign of a good horse.” Aragon called Bettys Bambino “the king of the downhill,” Santa Anita’s one-of-akind downhill turf course. Te gelding’s fnal career victory came in Santa Anita’s

San Simeon Stakes (G3T) on Dec. 26, 2016, the track’s traditional opening day. Tat gave the son of Unusual Heat—Brite Betty, by High Brite, bred and owned by Joe Ciaglia, Sharon Alesia, and Mike Mellen’s Bran Jam Stable, seven wins in 11 starts and earnings of $378,036. Bettys Bambino fnished third in 2017’s Sensational Star Stakes before being retired at age 7. Tat same partnership has produced multiple graded stakes winner Ashleyluvssugar, a son of Game Plan—Ashley’s Folly, by Urgent Request. Ashleyluvssugar is an-

father, Gerardo, a trainer in Peru, taught him everything he knows about horses, says his clock is a feeling he has as he and his workmate travel as one. “When you have the years of experience I have, you can feel how you’re going and you can tell if you’re going to hit the mark your trainer is after.” At one time that instinct clashed a bit with a trainer he worked for prior to coming aboard with Eurton in 2012. Tat was during an 11-year stint with Bob Bafert from 1997 to 2008. “Bob liked to use the radio to be in contact with his riders during workouts, and I told him that I knew how to work horses and didn’t need to wear a radio,” Aragon said. “We argued back and forth for a bit, but I went along with him. After all, he was the boss. We worked well together, and we have been friends all this time.” As happens with riders, knees become a problem after years of pursuing the craft, and it came to Aragon in 2008. He left the business to try to heal his knees. It took four years to alleviate that wear and tear with some surgery and rest and recuperation, but when he got a call from Eurton in 2012, he took up his tack and returned to riding. Aragon’s not just a passenger when he’s working a horse. He checks the condition of the track, and he checks on the condition and demeanor of his workmate before starting his task. Sometimes a horse will indicate a bit of laziness, and that means the wiry, 122-pound Aragon will need to wake the horse up. Sometimes his workmate is more aggressive, like some Calbred progeny of super sire Unusual Heat he handles for Eurton. For them, he says, he has to use a little trickery. “Te Unusual Heat horses, say like Bettys Bambino, are strong-headed and want to do their own thing,” Aragon said. “Fighting them, obviously, is not the way to go. Instead, I just let them have their way for a while, and then they come back to me. From there, the work goes like Peter and I want it to go. And the horse still thinks he’s in charge.” Aragon has fond memories of the times he spent with the recently retired Bettys Bambino. “To me, he was such a champion,” Aragon said. “But he was a handful, too. other Eurton star who draws the services of Aragon, both as galloper and as work rider. “Peter gives me all the best horses to breeze,” Aragon said. “And Ashleyluvssugar is at the top of the list. He loves to train, and he loves to run.” Among Ashleyluvssugar’s stakes victories are this year’s California Cup Turf Classic Stakes and a second win in the Charles Whittingham Stakes (G2T). Tose plus a third in the San Luis Rey Stakes (G2T) in between ran the 6-year-old gelding’s career earnings to $1,289,004 from 10 victories, three seconds, and four thirds in 22 starts. Another Unusual Heat whom Aragon handled over several years was Mega Heat, now a retired Cal-bred runner. Madeline Auerbach bred the stakes-placed son of Unusual Heat—Laguna Sunrise, by Native Prospector, and he raced for Ciaglia, Alesia, and Rob Dyrdek. Mega Heat completed his racing career in 2015 with earn-

ings of $437,750. Aragon rode as a jockey for a time in his native Peru, scoring his frst victory on his frst ride in 1978. Later that year he came to the United States and began riding at Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields be-

fore heading south to ride at Del Mar and the now-defunct Hollywood Park. Te plague of most riders—battling weight— followed him throughout his 11-year career as a jockey, leading him to give up that life in 1989. “I didn’t want to endanger my health by working so hard to keep my weight down,” he said. “So I quit riding as a jockey and turned to being an exercise rider. I eat all I want and I work out and play tennis pretty regularly, so I stay ft for what I do now.” Aragon, who became a U.S. citizen in 1988, is divorced but, he says, has a good association with his former wife and his three grown children, son Joseph, 26, and daughters Celine, 25, and Samantha, 24. He lives in Monrovia, just a short trip to Santa Anita, where, he says, he is usually the frst rider at the barn each morning because “I’m an early bird and I’m there by 4:30.”

amonds clocked the distance in 1:14.79, not far of Finest City’s track record of 1:14.48. Spawr claimed Skye Diamonds from Donald Dizney, who bred her in the name of his Dizney Double Diamond. Skye Diamonds is a Cal-bred daughter of Dizney’s Florida-based stallion First Dude out of the Johannesburg mare Exonerated. Te flly was winning her eighth race in 15 starts, and she increased her earnings to $449,150. Ambitious Brew has collected substantially more in lifetime earnings—$669,425—having been at his job three years longer. Te 7-year-old gelding is in his ffth season of racing, and he’s won stakes in four of those seasons after placing in the Real Good Deal Stakes at 2 in 2013. At 3 in 2014, he won the Sensational Star Stakes, and took the E.B. Johnston Stakes in 2015, the Lennyfromalibu Stakes and Eddie D. Stakes (G3T) in 2016, and the Sensational Star again this year. He is also adept on dirt and turf. While he has succeeded several times down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course, he switched to the Los Alamitos dirt with aplomb for the one-mile Bertrando. Ambitious Brew went of as the 4-1 third choice to 7-5 favorite Soi Phet, winner of the 2014 Bertrando. Soi Phet also holds the Los Alamitos track record of 1:33.95 for the distance. Second-choice Taman Guard set the initial fractions of :22.84 and :46.28, while jockey Norberto Arroyo Jr. placed Ambitious Brew in third. Arroyo had never before ridden Ambitious Brew, but he had ridden against him.

“I worked him Wednesday and he went well, so that gave me confdence,” Arroyo said. “Tis horse gave me a real strong run through the stretch.” Tat run carried Ambitious Brew to the lead and to a 13⁄4-length victory over Magic Mark in 1:35.60. Gold Rush Dancer fnished third. Trainer Martin Jones originally had pointed Ambitious Brew to the Lennyfromalibu Stakes down the Santa Anita hill on closing weekend. When that race didn’t go, the conditioner quickly and very successfully called an audible.

“Sometimes you have to be lucky,” said Jones. “He’s defnitely one of my favorite horses. He can run long or short and on dirt or turf.” Pamela Ziebarth bred and owns Ambitious Brew, a son of Tizbud—Kathwen, by Forest Wildcat. Kathy Berkey’s Berkey Bloodstock purchased Kathwen for $95,000 at the 2003 Keeneland September yearling sale for Ziebarth. Te mare, whose second dam, Show Of, was a multiple stakes winner, started only once. Ambitious Brew’s full brother Love My Bud is stakes-placed.

Cal-bred Graded Stakes Winners

ENERGY TO SPARE

ALEXANDER CAL-BREDS NICK A PAIR OF GRADED STAKES BY TRACY GANTZ

O

wner/breeder Nick Alexander and trainer Phil D’Amato unleashed two front-running 4-year-old California-breds in graded stakes competition over the Fourth of July weekend at Santa Anita. Te tactics worked spectacularly for both Enola Gray and Pee Wee Reese.

ENOLA GRAY’S WILSHIRE STAKES

After Enola Gray succeeded down Santa Anita’s hill in the March 18 Irish O’Brien Stakes, she had so much energy that she practically went around the entire main turf course. Cal-bred Enola Gray delivers an explosive performance in the grade 3 Wilshire Stakes “It seemed like forever, and she wasn’t coming back,” said Alexander. “I started to get worried and thought she was in the $100,345 Wilshire Stakes (G3T) at a mile July 1 instead of hurt. But her gallop-outs are always really, really strong.” against Cal-bred company. Tat indicated to Alexander and D’Amato that Enola Gray Regular rider Tyler Baze had been asking D’Amato when they would relish two turns. Tey chose a tough spot to try the idea, were going to stretch Enola Gray out. Unfortunately for Baze, the Wilshire occurred the same day he had a commitment across the country at Monmouth Park. Instead, Flavien Prat received the opportunity to turn Enola Gray into a graded stakes winner. Enola Gray faced fve others, including multiple graded winner Prize Exhibit and Brazilian group 1 winner Juno and graded stakes-placed Sheeza Milky Way. Yet bettors liked Enola Gray enough to make her the even-money favorite. Prat sent Enola Gray on a long lead, and though she clicked of brisk fractions of :22.36 and :44.72, she did it easily. “She’s just naturally fast,” said Prat. “Once I got to the frst turn, she got her stride and started to pick up the bit. I know she Owner Nick Alexander, center, and trainer Phil D’Amato, right center, was going fast, but she was comfortable.” proudly claim the spoils for Enola Gray’s Wilshire win Enola Gray breezed along in such a fashion that no one else 28

could catch her. She strolled home by two lengths over Madame Stripes, stopping the timer in 1:33.03. “She was ultra-impressive today,” said D’Amato. “To set those kinds of fractions and fnish like she did—when she kicked in, I said ‘Wow, maybe this is what she wanted to do all along.’ And he still couldn’t pull her up on the backside.” Te only time Enola Gray has fnished worse than third was a ffth in the May 27 Monrovia Stakes (G2T) down the hill. “We got into a speed duel with three other horses, and it was hard to get her to relax,” said Alexander. “So, going a mile she can go a bit slower, but she still has a big lead. And when she’s on a lead, you can’t catch her.” Enola Gray has now won six stakes— the 2016 Melair Stakes, Fleet Treat Stakes, and California Distaf Handicap and this year’s Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint Stakes, Irish O’Brien, and Wilshire. She raised her record to seven wins in 11 starts for earnings of $573,100. She also continued to raise the profle of Alexander’s homebred stallion Grazen. Alexander bought the More Tan Ready mare Unsung Heroine for $40,000 to breed to Grazen, getting Enola Gray.

An artful Dodger, Pee Wee Reese shuts out rivals in the grade 3 American Stakes on turf

Pee Wee Reese resulted the second time Bluegrass Belle was bred to Tribal Rule. Pee Wee Reese showed talent to D’Amato from the very beginning. “He was always a good horse,” said the trainer. “We always thought very highly of him, but I don’t think we realized his true potential until we threw him on the grass. When we put him on the grass, he was totally diferent horse.” Pee Wee Reese needed four starts on the dirt to break his maiden. Since then, he has performed almost perfectly on the turf. Twice he won sprinting and then successfully stretched his front-running prowess to a mile. In his stakes debut, the May 20 Crystal Water Stakes for California-breds and California-sired runners, he fnished second to grade 1 winner What a View. Joe Talamo has ridden Pee Wee Reese in all of his turf eforts. “He’s a tremendous horse,” said the jockey, who added the high praise of com-

paring him to the recently retired millionaire Obviously, also trained by D’Amato and ridden by Talamo. “Tis couldn’t have come at a better time,” said D’Amato. “We retired the big guy, and we’ve got another nice prospect on our hands.” Alexander missed seeing the American in person due to a regular family Fourth of July celebration in Montana. D’Amato said that Alexander found a television where he could watch the race. “He was jumping for joy, and the whole family was going crazy up there and having a good time,” said D’Amato. Cal-bred Kimberlea K defeats males in the Everett Nevin Stakes at Oak Tree at Pleasanton

imberlea K, a front-running 2-year-old flly campaigned by Kim and Kevin Nish’s KMN Racing, zipped to her second win in two starts when she captured the $100,675 Everett Nevin Stakes at the Oak Tree at Pleasanton meeting July 8.

Starting as odds-on favorite, she held second-choice Schulace at bay throughout, fnishing 13⁄4 lengths in front under jockey Frank Alvarado. Eight males were in her wake, including a half-dozen coming of maiden victories. California-bred Kimberlea (pronounced kim-ber-lee-ah) K could have stayed with her own sex and contested the Juan Gonzalez Memorial Stakes a week earlier, but trainer Jerry Hollendorfer opted for “extra 30

time and a larger purse against Cal-breds,” according to Kevin Nish. (Cal-bred Song From Above won the Gonzalez, running her 51⁄2 furlongs .03 seconds faster than Kimberlea K’s 1:05.27.) Te Nishes, from Fairfeld, Calif., started KMN six years ago and have been partners in champion Shared Belief, two-time Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) heroine Mizdirection, and graded winner Stays in Vegas. Tey are quick to credit all-around horsewoman Ellen Jackson and bloodstock agents Jason Litt and Alex Solis for much of their success. KMN also became a presence at Toroughbred sales early on and purchased No Better Terms, a Pure Prize yearling flly, at Keeneland September in 2012 for $52,000. Raced only at 2, No Better Terms was a blur leaving the gate, though she mustered only one win in fve starts. Te Nishes, meanwhile, had invested

with Jackson in a young stallion named Indian Evening, by Indian Charlie, who ran third in the Tree Chimneys Saratoga Special (G2) and had received high marks as a potential sire. Te initial mating resulted in Kimberlea K, who became her sire’s frst winner and stakes winner. No Better Terms is currently in foal to Indian Evening and has a weanling by him. But no more siblings are possible, as the stallion died unexpectedly in late April of this year. “It was quite a shock,” Kevin Nish said. “I would say he will have 31⁄2 crops, as he did get quite a few mares in foal this spring. And it looks like they’ll be runners.” Kevin Nish noted that he is most involved in the racing aspects of KMN while his wife looks after the breeding particulars. “We keep between nine and 12 mares and right now have seven new foals and seven yearlings,” said Kim Nish. “So we have a good number in the pipeline and, we hope, some nice Cal-breds.” Kimberlea K is the second homebred stakes winner for KMN, following 3-yearold Grecian Fire, winner of the Alcatraz Stakes on Golden Gate turf just eight weeks earlier. By Unusual Heat, Grecian Fire was produced from Maddie’s Odyssey, a stakes-placed Kitten’s Joy mare purchased in foal to Drosselmeyer for $14,500 at Keeneland, also in 2012. Victory in the Nevin kept Kimberlea K’s record unblemished and raised her bankroll to $77,280. Afterward, there was talk of the Del Mar Debutante (G1) as a possible future race, but Kevin Nish had a clearer objective, saying, “We love the Calbred program, and I’m happy to keep her with Cal-breds.”

“At 34 years of age, he is one of Legacy Ranch’s most valued employees,” said Evelyn Parrella. Newhall’s father, Lance, worked for Legacy Ranch for two years before opening his own company. “Trent’s dad has many years of experience working for various wineries, maintaining and repairing large vineyard equipment,” Parrella explained. “Trent learned his mechanical skills from his father, who is also a mechanic. At age 8 he started working on projects with his dad in their garage in Herald.” Newhall’s mother, Brenda, nicknamed LaDena, is a country western singer. “She sings for 50 diferent retirement homes in the area and also at wineries, casinos, festivals, and fairs,” said Parrella. “With her own CDs, she rivals Patsy Cline. We can attest to that!” It was in high school that Newhall frst got real world experience that would lead to his future career. “Trent was on a work program that enabled him to leave school at noon,” said Parrella. “From school he would go to a job at Lights West in Lodi, which his aunt and uncle owned. Tere he learned his electrical skills, working on concert lighting, audio, and staging. After graduating from high school, he went on to various trade schools and to do union sheet metal work and union labor construction.” Newhall now has a team of approximately 15 workers at Legacy. Evelyn Parrella said that he can repair anything from golf carts, tractors, and water trucks to Eurocizers, starting gates, and

Te four rivals in the July 8 contest included Eclipse champion and Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) winner Finest City, grade 1 winner Constellation, and dual grade 2 winner Pretty N Cool. “She was training so well; I thought she could win,” Spawr said. “But when I saw the competition, I knew she would have to be at her very best to beat those kinds of fllies. I still can’t believe she won so well and so fast.” Skye Diamonds raced in midpack early, rolled four wide into the stretch, and cruised past David Flores on Constellation to win by 21⁄2

lengths, stopping the clock in 1:14.79 for the 61⁄2-furlong distance. Te next day, Flores told Spawr, “I was loaded with a fresh horse and I couldn’t believe that your flly went by us!” Te 77-year-old Spawr has a long history with California-breds. He has trained such wickedly fast state-bred sprinters as Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) winner Amazombie and warrior Sensational Star, as well as Cal-bred fllies such as stakes winners Enjoy the Moment and Ismene. Spawr frst gained an interest in racing when he came across the Daily Racing Form, and he eventually worked as a blacksmith and veterinarian assistant before he turned to training in the 1980s. While most barns operate on an early schedule, with the track closing for morning training

around 10 a.m., Spawr takes “early” to another level. “We are always working by 3 a.m.,” Spawr said, admitting that he arrives at the barn by 2:45 many days. “You can get a lot done at that time of day. We are done training by 8.” Ten he admitted that some days they are “late” and don’t fnish “until 8:10.” Spawr’s earlier methods have worked, with a parade of top runners streaming through his care. Multiple graded stakes winner Sensational Star won several stakes in 1989 and 1990. He was heavily favored to win the inaugural California Cup Sprint Handicap but fnished a disappointing second. Just hours later Spawr’s former claimer My Sonny Boy saved the day by upsetting the $300,000 Wells Fargo Bank California Cup Classic Handicap. Te exceptional grass mare Exchange gave Spawr three grade 1 victories amidst her record of 15 wins and seven seconds in 30 starts. Te brilliant distafer earned $1,287,795 while winning stakes in fve consecutive seasons. Enjoy the Moment and Ismene became California-bred champions in 1999 and 2011, respectively. Enjoy the Moment earned more than a half million dollars that included the winning purses from three graded stakes. Although she did not win outside of California, she did ship to compete at Belmont Park in New York, Gulfstream Park in Florida, and Fair Grounds in Louisiana. Te high-strung Ismene, whom Spawr needed to pacify with rubber cones and balls to play with in her stall, won

Every day I miss him. He’s at Old Friends in Kentucky now, and he’s one of the favorites there. He gets a lot of attention. the 2011 Anoakia Stakes and California Breeders’ Champion Stakes, and returned of an 11-month layof to run second in three stakes. She earned $236,990. While all of them are standouts in their own right, none wormed their way into Spawr’s heart as much as Amazombie did. Te gelding, who surprised Spawr by coming as part of a package deal with another colt he actually meant to purchase, went on to become one of California’s brightest stars. Te son of Northern Afeet—Wilshe Amaze, by In Excess, was named the Eclipse Award champion sprinter of 2011, having won the Breeders’ Cup Sprint by a neck at Churchill Downs in Kentucky. He retired after four productive seasons, earning $1,920,378 while winning 12 of 29 starts. “Every day I miss him,” Spawr said. “He’s at Old Friends in Kentucky now, and he’s one of the favorites there. He gets a lot of attention. He’s a friendly

guy, as long as you have a carrot.” Spawr reminisced about Amazombie’s career as well. “We’ve been fortunate enough to have some real good ones, but him winning the Breeders’ Cup was the best moment. He’d be a top favorite; he brought us so much joy.” In Skye Diamonds, Spawr sees similarities to Amazombie. “She has the talent to do what he did,” he explained. “She’s special.” Skye Diamonds broke her maiden second out at Los Alamitos in 2015, then won an allowance optional claimer and two high-priced claiming events in 2016 before her smashing success so far this year. Te 4-year-old flly, owned by Tom Acker, Allen Racing, and Bloom Racing Stables, won two allowance optional claiming events to start the season, including a 53⁄4-length romp in February. Spawr recalls the race vividly. “I always watch on two TVs at once, so I can view both the head-on and the pan,” he said. “Te way she won and

the way she fnished, I was speechless. I couldn’t move. Tat’s when I knew we really had something.” After that efort Skye Diamonds added the $101,035 Dream of Summer Stakes before her Great Lady M. score. Donald Dizney’s Dizney Double Diamond bred the chestnut daughter of First Dude—Exonerated, by Johannesburg. She has won eight of 15 starts, with four seconds, and has earned $449,150. Spawr said he would look to get Skye Diamonds into the $100,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap Aug. 13 at Del Mar, which will host the 2017 Breeders’ Cup World Toroughbred Championships. “It’s 61⁄2 furlongs, which helps her closing style,” Spawr said. Although winning over the same surface that holds the Breeders’ Cup is an ideal plus for many horses, Skye Diamonds has already taken care of that, having scored there as the favorite in August 2016.

njuries to the splint bones can sideline athletic horses. Such injuries are more common in younger horses and thus can adversely afect a racehorse’s career. Horses have three bones in each lower leg. Te cannon bone is the largest and provides the limb’s main support. Te two small splint bones are long and slender and attach to the cannon on each side and toward the rear. Te splint bones in the front legs are called the second and fourth metacarpals (the cannon being the third metacarpal). Te splint bones in the hind legs are the second and fourth metatarsal bones (the cannon being the third metatarsal). A strong, thin ligament called the interosseous ligament holds each splint bone frmly against the cannon bone. Tis forms a groove for the suspensory ligament and also gives some protection to the deep fexor tendon, which runs down the back of the leg behind the suspensory. Te interosseous ligament between the splint bones and the cannon bone can sometimes be confused with the suspensory ligament because the latter is also occasionally referred to as the interosseous ligament. Te splint bones are broadest at the top, forming part of the base for either the knee or hock joint above it, and taper to a small, rounded knob. Te bone ends about two-thirds of the way down the cannon, just above the fetlock joint. In an earlier time, these splint bones were probably larger leg bones; the horse’s primitive ancestors had four toes, and these bones were probably attached to the outer toes.

In the modern horse these vestigial small bones in the front legs act as braces and support for the knee, serving as anchors for connective and supporting structures that attach to the small bone at the rear of the knee joint. Tis small, rounded bone, the accessory carpal bone, also called the trapezium, protrudes behind the knee and acts as a brace point and fulcrum for supportive sheets of ligament that pass behind the knee from the forearm to the cannon bone. Te splint bones are not frmly attached to the cannon bone until the horse is about 3 years old, sometimes as late as 5 years old. Until they are completely attached, there is always the possibility of getting a splint from too much trauma, stress, or movement/ rubbing between the bones. Lameness from splints is most common in 2-year-olds and 3-year-olds in vigorous training. But it has also been known to occur in horses as old as 4 or 5 that are worked exceptionally hard or have extra stress on these bones due to poor conformation. Dr. Gary Baxter, hospital director at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., says most of what are called true splints—infammation and subsequent bone growth due to tearing of the ligament attaching the splint bone to the cannon bone—occur in young horses. “In an older horse with swelling in that region (and lameness), you’d be more apt to suspect external trauma,” he said. Traditionally, it was thought that the splint bone’s primary function was weight-bearing support for the knee, alongside the cannon bone. A recent study looked at how the head of the inside splint bone interacts with the carpus (knee joint), assessing the rotational and compressive stability of the carpus. “We found that when the top 20% of the medial splint bone was removed, it did not really afect stability of the carpus when downward pressure was applied,” said Baxter. “But it made the

carpus very unstable when the carpus was twisted. Stability was only afected when you remove the top 20% of the bone, where all the ligaments attach to the splint bone. Te top of the splint bone is essential for support of the knee during twisting actions of the limb. “We are not sure if this has anything to do with the development of splints, but whenever the limb takes weight, the splint bones are pushed toward the back

Splint injuries occur in the knees more often than in the hocks

of the leg and probably do put pressure on the interosseous ligament. Splints probably are related to movement of the splint bone, and the amount of movement is probably related to the amount of work the carpus is doing. Te harder the work, the more likely the interosseous ligament will tear.” SPLINTS

Splint bones are well known for their role in creating splints—painful swellings that may or may not become bony enlargements. Mild irritations may cause heat, swelling, and mild lameness, and then resolve. More se-

vere cases generally produce new bone growth and a permanent lump. After the infammation subsides, the swelling becomes smaller and frmer. In early stages most of the enlargement is due to infammation. But once the area heals, all that remains is the smaller bone formation. “Splints are seen most often in younger horses, especially when they start training,” said Baxter. Poor front-limb conformation (more stress on one side or the other) may disrupt the interosseous ligament before it stabilizes, especially if the horse is overworked. Subsequent bony enlargements might vary from pea-size to as large as a chicken egg. A young horse in training might “pop a splint,” with sudden swelling, infammation, and lameness—or might develop bony enlargement without any history of lameness. Te bony lump is usually just a blemish after the infammatory stage passes. “Splints are more common on the inside splint bone, and many of these are fairly close to the knee,” said Baxter. “Te typical location is about 2.5 to 3 inches below the knee.” Due to the shape and angle of the splint bone, the top and inside of the inner splint bone take more weight and stress than the outer splint bone. Te more weight applied to the top of the inner splint bone (as from ofset cannons, often called bench knees), the more risk for splints. Te inner splint bone is also more prone to injury because the inside of the leg usually takes more weight than the outside. “Te suspensory ligament is between the splint bones attached to the back of the cannon bone, versus the much smaller interosseous ligament between the axial border of the splint bone and the back of the cannon bone,” said Baxter. “What most people refer to when they talk about splints is the tearing of that small ligament. Depending on severity, this may involve just a little bit of local tearing—which can be resolved/ healed by icing, wrapping, and taking

FRACTURED SPLINT BONE A fractured splint bone is sometimes mistaken for splint lameness, but in most cases a fracture has more swelling and the horse is more lame and for a longer period of time. This problem is most common on the inside of the leg, as a result of the area being hit by the opposite hoof when the horse is working at high speed. Occasionally, a splint bone might be fractured by running into something solid or by a kick from another horse. But these injuries are usually on the outside splint bones. Breaks can occur anywhere on the bone but most commonly are found in the top third. Sometimes lengthwise tension might create a transverse fracture. A combination of weight, pressure, and twisting can break the bone obliquely, especially in racehorses. A fractured splint bone is usually very painful when pressed with the fngers. Some fractures eventually heal just with a lengthy rest, leaving a large bony lump. By contrast, splint infammation usually goes away more quickly, with no complications. A fractured splint bone might continue to produce new bone growth over several weeks or months, and it might need surgical correction or removal. A fracture caused by an external blow might develop infection if the skin is broken. Other complications might include a dead piece of bone that becomes separated from the healthy bone and hinders proper healing. There is usually drainage from the site. Radiographs might be necessary to diagnose the fracture. “A non-displaced fssure fracture can sometimes be diffcult to see with radiographs, however,” said Dr. Gary Baxter. “A veterinarian can sometimes miss this when it mimics a splint. “If there’s a crack in the bone, there is usually more lameness, more pain on palpation, and more severity of clinical signs than the average splint. A fracture should always be suspected if the horse is quite lame.”

gically remove part of it with a chisel and mallet to take of the bony growth and smooth it up, to make the horse sound. Tis is an option for cases where the bony lump is very large, for whatever reason. “Te majority of splints don’t need surgery, and prognosis is usually very good. With surgical removal, sometimes you get recurrence of bony growth because you’ve disturbed, irritated, and stimulated the bone-forming cells in the periosteum again. Tis causes it to lay down more layers of bone. Usually you don’t get as much bony regrowth, however, as the original lump. So even if you get a little regrowth, the surgery is usually still an improvement.” Generally, splints are not a complicated problem. “It tends to be more of an issue for owners with show horses,” said Baxter. “Some owners want to remove a splint just to minimize the cosmetic blemish. With the majority of splints I’ve removed, it was because they were causing lameness, or it was for cosmetic reasons. Either way, you can improve them. “Any splint can result in a bony lump, or at least a temporary thickening of the periosteum and the ligament. Even if it’s not a bony enlargement, it might be a soft-tissue fbrous enlargement in that area. Tis kind of enlargement might resolve with time, but if it is re-injured, it could revert back to infammation and a bony enlargement as well. To fgure out whether it’s bony enlargement or just soft-tissue swelling, we can use radiographs or ultrasound. Ten you can decide what you might do for treatment. “Repetitive injury and infammation is when you end up with a bony enlargement. Many horses have bony enlargements on the proximal, medial splint bone (under the knee, on the inside of the leg). But if these chronic splints don’t bother the horse, they really don’t

need treatment. Te horse might have been a little lame at frst or had some infammation and then it quiets down and doesn’t cause problems. So when you see a bump on the inside of the leg, this does not necessarily mean it’s the cause of a lameness. “First-aid treatment on most of these, when the horse frst goes lame and has heat and swelling in that area, is to decrease infammation. Many people recommend cold hosing or ice on the area (or devices that provide cold therapy and compression) and/or non-steroidal anti-infammatory therapy and wrapping the leg. Tis is a great use for topical anti-infammatories like Surpass or diclofenac liposome cream. Historically, we used DMSO and glycerin in a sweat, and I think this type of counter-

pressure with a snug wrap is helpful. Te more you can decrease the persistent infammatory response, the less likely the injury will result in bony enlargement. “For chronic splints—bony lumps that still have some infammation—some people have tried shock wave treatment to try to knock down infammation in the ligament itself, which could be benefcial. Tis type of treatment is controversial, however. Some people feel that shock waves stimulate the periosteum, which could result in more bone growth.” Some people try counterirritation in the acute stage. “Tis consists of local injection of a small dose of steroid (triamcinolone) along with the ligament, to knock out the infammation,” said Baxter. “Tis treatment is controversial because the steroid may contribute to bony growth. But the whole idea is to locally treat the infammation. You don’t want to use repeated injections of steroid because this is usually counterproductive. “Tese types of treatments must be considered on a case-by-case basis, selecting the ones that might possibly beneft,” says Baxter. Cold therapy, topical anti-infammatory medication, and rest are generally very adequate and efective. PREVENTION

Some people try diferent types of shoeing to help take stress of that part of the leg. Te best thing you can do is keep the feet as well balanced as possible. If you do too much “correction,” you are working against the way the horse’s legs are structured and may create more stress. “If horses have bench knees, you can’t correct that with shoeing,” said Baxter. “Te best way to prevent splints is to take it slow with young horses in training and not be in too big a hurry,” Baxter said.

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through July 17, 2017.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
