As The Mystery Unfolds:

The Story of Dr. Erica Miller

By Pax Ansley Photography By Marvin Steindler

I

n any lifetime, there exists a beautiful bounty of love and fear, triumph alongside despair and pain mixed with pleasure. Each occurrence colors the canvas that is the human experience. The way your masterpiece unfolds depends on the manner in which you receive and view these unique episodes. When bad things happen, for some, it can break them. For others, there is no such thing as bad things, only opportunities to grow. For Dr. Erica Miller, life is a “mixed bag.” “Things happen,” she says. “Those who can are resilient and move on. There is no predetermined good or bad. Life is happening.” These are the words of an 82-year-old dynamo, with her Ph.D. in clinical psychology. The Hidden Hills resident is a wife, an entrepreneur, a Holocaust survivor, a mother, a healer, an author, a grandmother, a motivational speaker and an inspiration to many. Yet, these are not the things that define her. She is much more complicated and interesting than mere titles can elucidate. At 82 years young, her energy is contagious. She lives her life with purpose and passion. In her own words, she “never stops learning.” A lifetime before she was Dr. Miller, Erica Gelber was born in Czernowitz, Romania, in 1933. She lived as any young Romanian girl with her accountant father and homemaker mother — that is, until she was 7-years-old and it was 1940 and the world as she knew it

18 Calabasas Style

came crashing down around her. As our history books remind us, this was the year that the Nazi party started to violently uproot Jewish people from their homes all around Europe and deport them to concentration camps. Erica spent four years of her childhood in a Ukrainian concentration camp. Each morning, she would look out the window at bodies being removed from the camp. Each day, she thought “maybe tomorrow it will be me.” Miraculously, that day never came. In 1944, when Erica was 11, the camp where she, her father, mother and sister were imprisoned was liberated by Russians. However, the tribulations for her family were far from over. When they arrived back in Romania, the Gelbers found that their home had been seized by Russians and her family became refugees. Through a series of moves from Transylvania to Bucharest and finally to Israel in 1949, Erica developed a very interesting viewpoint on the word “home.” She has never really felt at home in any of the places she has lived. This has not made her bitter or resentful; instead, it has opened her up to adaptability. She belongs nowhere, so she can belong everywhere. She considers herself a “citizen of the world.” She believes that when you are not attached to a physical place, you can take your heart with you.

Erica and her family were taken by the Nazis when she was 7 -years-old. Prior to her time in the labor camps, Erica had no formal education. During her four years at the camp, she was taught by fellow prisoners some basic skills, such as reading, writing and math. After liberation, a fire was ignited in Erica to pursue knowledge and continue her education. She was placed into 5th grade at a private Catholic school and dazzled her teachers with her unexpected knowledge. Erica continued her education into high school in Israel, “breaking stereotypes” for females at the time. After graduating, Erica served in the Israeli Air Force from 1954 to 1956. After that, she held a government job in the Israeli tourist information office until 1958. She was starting to “navigate life on her terms.” In 1958, Erica followed her sister Judith’s lead and found herself coming to America, the acclaimed land of opportunity. The year was 1959, the location was beautiful, glamorous Los Angeles, California, which is where Erica met Jerry Miller, the man that would become her husband for over 50 years and the father of her two children. In 1970, 11 years after Erica Gelber became Erica Miller, a certain calling began to summon her. Her two children, John and Diana, were on their way to elementary school. Erica made the bold decision to go back to school to pursue a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. A very unpopular decision at a time when the woman’s place was in the home, Erica felt the burning desire to become a healer. Her soul’s yearning was not easily silenced, and she decided to follow her heart, no matter what — a mantra that has gotten her to where she is today.

Every year, no matter what, the Miller family chooses a destination for their December vacation. Since the children were young, the Miller family has set aside time out of everyone’s busy schedule to get together and forget about their worries. This wonderful bonding experience is constantly the highlight of everyone’s year. The tradition continues to this day as the family grows. It is appreciated as a time to reconnect with what is important. When asked about her definition of the pursuit of happiness, Dr. Erica Miller’s answer was rather surprising. “The goal is not to be happy,” she says. “Wellness does not equal happiness. Being in the moment, here and now, enjoying every moment — that is what I strive for.” This is a woman who has surrendered to her destiny. She recognizes the things she cannot change and has the clarity to accept them as they are. In her words, she has “surrendered to destiny.” She urges people to “live life as the mystery unfolds.” She says, “Be the main character in your story. As one door closes, another one opens. Follow your heart.” And finally, she has her mantra: “Don’t tell me I can’t do it.” n If you know a great family or individual to profile, please contact us at: stylepublishing@gmail.com.

Eight years after going back to school, Erica emerged as Dr. Erica Miller, with her Ph.D in clinical psychology. In the years that followed, Dr. Miller established a chain of mental health clinics throughout Los Angeles and Orange County. At the time, Miller Psychological Centers employed over 40 healthcare professionals. In the spirit of giving back to the community, she founded California Diversion Intervention Foundation, a nonprofit organization that counsels those afflicted with substance abuse and domestic violence. She has written countless books, including “Don’t Tell Me I Can’t Do It” and “Thanks for My Journey.” Her new book, “Living Audaciously with Gusto: Chronologically Gifted,” will be coming soon. As a motivational speaker, she continues to inspire both men and women with her tales of survival, optimism and living in the here and now. Erica’s daughter, now Diana Miller Turk, has three children and has been happily married for 25 years to her loving husband, Greg Turk. Greg is a dentist in private practice in nearby Woodland Hills. Diana runs the family’s real estate business, which is based in Austin, Texas. Diana’s and Greg’s 23-year-old daughter Shayna is a USC graduate and working towards her teaching credential. Their son, Andrew, 22, is a senior at Berkeley. He is immersed in Greek life and is currently applying to law school. Their youngest daughter, Talia, 19, is a sophomore at Ohio State University, studying health science. She is involved in Greek life and is incredibly passionate about her school. While Diana and husband Greg are true-blue UCLA Bruin fans, their kids introduce USC, Berkeley and Ohio State into the mix; college game days in the Turk household are never boring. For Erica’s son, John Miller, his sons are his pride and joy. He is incredibly proud that his two boys are turning into wonderful young men. Joshua, 18, is a senior in high school. He is very involved with the Junior Statesmen of America program and hopes to earn a degree in business. His younger son, Eli, 12, is a soccer player with a heart of gold. Like his dad, John, Eli is a big UCLA sports fan. John is a lawyer for Sony Pictures. The boys’ mother, Gail Becker, a public relations executive, is a very important part of their lives and is very involved in the family.

One of the finest fashion events in Ventura County, the Casa Pacifica Angels “Spotlight on Style” Fashion Show, returned to the Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village on Saturday, November 14, 2015, for another afternoon of fabulous fashion, sumptuous dining, and unique boutique shopping. The hosts of the 14th edition of the runway fashion show, Susan & Ken Bauer, and the Casa Pacifica Angels partnered with Neiman Marcus Topanga for the second year in a row, who produced the runway fashion show. A champagne reception opened the festivities as guests perused twenty designer boutiques to find a wonderful collection of accessories, clothing, and one-of-a-kind gifts for their friends and family for the holidays. All proceeds from the “Spotlight on Style” fashion show benefit Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families. Casa Pacifica is a crisis-care and residential treatment facility for abused, neglected, or at-risk children in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Located in Camarillo, CA, the agency is the largest non-profit provider of children’s mental health services.

5 Tips for

Healthy Skin 28

Calabasas Style

By Anna D. Guanche, MD Bella Skin Institute

B

eautiful skin is always “in,” and luckily, the recommendations for beautiful skin are the same as the ones for healthy skin. Maybe you don’t want a million products on your shelf or a 12-step skin care program, but a few consistent behaviors can really make a difference to your health in the long term. Make healthy, no-nonsense choices:

1) Protect yourself from the sun Sun protection is arguably the most important aspect of skin care. UV light directly affects the DNA in your skin cells, causing mutations (skin cancer) and photo damage (wrinkles, brown spots). Using daily sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is ideal. If out in the sun, an SPF of 60 or higher, with repeat application every two hours, is ideal. My favorite products for daily use are EltaMD 46, Matrix 30 by NeoStrata and Rosaliac 30 by La RochePosay, but Neutrogena is great, too. For outdoors, I love Cell-Ox Shield 60 by La Roche-Posay and Elta MD products, but Coppertone Sport 50 is excellent as well. Avoid the sun. Seek shade or be indoors between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. when UVB, the sunburn wavelength, is at its peak.

eyes more wrinkled. Gasp! This is just what we are trying to avoid. Cleansers should be chosen based on skin type. I recommend different ones for acne, rosacea and pre- or postmenopausal skin, and what you chose should, ideally, be compatible with other products in a skin care regimen. My favorite mild cleansers are DCL Blue and Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser. These are great for makeup removal.

3) Avoid smoking Smoking accelerates skin aging, as it accelerates aging in all tissues in the body. It causes production of free radicals that are known to damage collagen. Smoking also causes vasoconstriction, which chokes off blood supply to the skin and, over time, leads to a wrinkled, sallow, dull look on its surface. In addition, the repetitive facial expressions you make when smoking — such as pursing your lips when inhaling and squinting your eyes to keep out smoke — can contribute to wrinkles. As a side note, when we look at signs of aging holistically, the voice tone is an important factor. Voice changes from smoking hint at a much more advanced age— which is just what Calabasasians are trying to avoid.

4) Eat well

Wear protective clothing. Hats, preferably wide-brimmed; lightweight, longsleeve shirts; and UV-protectant laundry rinses are great aids in protecting against sun damage.

A balanced diet is important to overall health. What you put in shows on your skin! Plenty of water, antioxidants, supplements and a low-carb diet can all play a role in promoting skin health.

Most sun damage occurs before age 15, so protect your children! Also, know that applying sunscreen and then “laying out” does not constitute good sun protection.

Antioxidants that come with fruits and vegetables — particularly grapes and succulents — are great for you. During the dry winter season, a handful of almonds or walnuts or even a spoonful of peanut butter (unless you are allergic) are helpful in providing raw materials for sebum, your body’s natural moisturizer. A low carbohydrate diet prevents glycation, or hardening of the tissues due to sugar molecule attachments, which can again lead to wrinkling. In general, I do think supplements, such as fish oil, resveratrol, cinnamon, glucosamine and vitamin E are helpful.

2) Wash your face It is simple. It is true. Your face should be washed twice a day in order to prevent buildup, congested pores, breakouts and even wrinkles. Believe it or not, I still have patients who tell me they go to bed with makeup on. The eye makeup — mascara and eyeshadow — sheds small particles into and around the eyes at night that cause irritation and puffiness. This puffiness then comes down like a deflated balloon and leaves the skin around the

5) Reduce stress Easier said than done! Stress can ravage the body by suppressing the immune system. The immune system is responsible for skin cancer surveillance, and when it is suppressed, abnormal cells are allowed to grow. In addition, stress triggers cortisol release, which leads to acne breakouts. Stress management involves stepping back from situations to put them into perspective. Prioritizing tasks can help. Start on the items on the list instead of fretting about the list. Exercise, such as Pilates or yoga or even kickboxing, increases blood flow in the body and releases endorphins that signal a state of well-being. Long, deep breaths are helpful, as is meditation. A nice conversation full of laughter with a good friend could benefit you both. This year, and every year, healthy skin is in. Enjoy your skin and treat it well, like you do a fine car or a beautiful home, by maintaining and restoring it with loving care. The results over time will be worth the effort. There are many things you can do to maintain the largest organ in your body, and hopefully, these five tips are a great start. Happy New Year! n The statements in this article are for general informational purposes only and do not substitute for individual medical advice. Pacific Festival Ballet’s 17th Annual

Sugar Plum Tea Party

Pacific Festival Ballet’s 17th Annual Sugar Plum Tea Party was held at Sherwood Country Club on November 8th, 2015. The afternoon was filled with fun holiday-themed crafts, a raffle, a photo booth, and ballerinas galore! The silent auction boasted 175 beautifully crafted baskets with many items generously donated from the community. A luncheon and program followed where Lori Sorensen was honored for her years of tireless dedication to California Dance Theatre and Pacific Festival Ballet. The event was a huge success, with proceeds supporting four spectacular performances of The Nutcracker at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza on December 19th and 20th with guest artists from New York City Ballet, Tiler Peck and Gonzalo Garcia. This 22nd Nutcracker season provided visions of sugar plums and the100% accurate prediction of snowfall on the audience!

Charity Ball

National Charity League, Inc., San Fernando Valley Chapter held its 50th annual Charity Ball, The Best Is Yet to Come!, on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Since 1966, it has been a tradition of the Chapter to honor its most recent graduates for their years of service to the Chapter and the community in which they live. This year, the achievements of twelve such dedicated young women, the Debutantes of 2015, were celebrated. As 12 beautiful young women gracefully performed the Saint James Bow, reached out to the waiting arm of their father and began their promenade around the dance floor as their mother’s love, pride, and joy lit up the ballroom of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The Debutantes of 2015 along with their mothers and fellow members, volunteered nearly 10,000 hours at the philanthropies supported by the chapter: American Cancer Society Discovery Shops, Guide Dogs of America, Motion Picture and Television Fund, ONEgeneration, Operation Gratitude, Tri-Valley Special Olympics, and West Valley Food Pantry.

Selecting the

Wedding Venue

Dreams of your

T

raditionally, a couple would get engaged, pick their ideal wedding date and then book their wedding venue after considering the few obvious choices in or around their hometown. Today, brides and grooms have an infinite number of wedding venue options available — making the choice and selection seem a bit overwhelming. We’ve set out to help make that decision a bit easier by profiling some of the most beautiful and top wedding venue choices in the area. Keep in mind that many of these places book up far in advance, so it’s best to schedule your initial wedding consultation as much in advance as possible. It’s also important to determine your basic criteria, including your budget, the estimated number of guests you plan to invite, the time of year and time of day you envision for your ceremony and if having a full-service venue is an important consideration for your plans. The style and feel for your wedding is also an important consideration as it will set the tone and theme for everything else on your wedding to-do list. With that in mind, the wedding venues we have selected provide a beautiful assortment of style options — from the elegance of a traditional ballroom setting to a more rustic and romantic vineyard setting to a beautiful Malibu beach venue and everything in between. Calabasas Style 41

you’ll find a semi-circular rotunda, topped with a pergola and overhead canopy that provides year-round shade. Guests gaze out on a panorama of green fairways, rolling hillsides and a blue horizon, all of which makes an enchanting backdrop for wedding vows. After the ceremony, photos of the bridal party are often taken in the rose garden in front of a cascading waterfall, while friends and family enjoy the cocktail hour on the sun-splashed brick garden patio adjacent to the terrace. Encompassing over 17 lush acres, cradled by a lake and vineyard, the Inn feels more like a European private estate than a hotel. This boutique resort has four outdoor ceremony sites available: the Lakeside Arbor, Mediterraneo Gazebo, the Waterfall and the Tuscan Garden. The Inn also has a beautiful selection of reception venues with amenities that include bi-level ballrooms, lakeside settings, stunning fireplaces and adjacent outdoor lanais for prereception cocktails. No matter which site you choose, they offer numerous wedding packages and dedicated coordinators to assist you in planning your dream wedding. The Inn’s traditional setting is the Lakeside Arbor, whose charming wooden railing captures a nostalgic ambiance, perfumed by heritage roses and Provençal herbs. The classic Mediterranean Gazebo has sleek Romanesque columns and overlooks the lake and gardens. Other couples opt for a walk down the aisle beneath an arbor entwined with flowering vines in the Tuscan Garden and are wed alongside an iron filigree cupola and a splashing fountain. A third option is next to a dramatic waterfall, which cascades over an expanse of polished rocks into two streams and is surrounded by swaths of lawn and tropical foliage. After vows are exchanged, your guests take an easy stroll to the Provence building. The Provence Patio, with its covered outdoor bar and heat lamps, is a congenial and refreshing place to serve pre-party cocktails. One of the most popular spaces for receptions is the bilevel Provence Room, with crystal chandeliers suspended from an open-beam ceiling. Floorto-ceiling windows treat diners to a lake and waterfall vista. Adjacent to the Provence Room are two stylishly decorated banquet spaces for more formal events. The second-story Fairway Room features generous views of both the neighboring golf course and the sparkling lake. On the lower story, the Lakeside Room and its adjoining patio let you dine at the water’s edge and sip champagne under the stars.

A FRESH START FOR YOU, A FRESH START FOR YOUR INTERIORS By Tammy Randall Wood, ASID

I

feel inspired by surroundings that reflect who I am and who I strive to be. For me and for many people, the start of a new year encourages healthy choices and trying new things, but it also motivates me to get organized and clean out all the nooks and crannies of my home, making crisp again those places that might be feeling stale. Every few years, I am motivated to truly take inventory of how my furnishings are serving me and consider whether or not my home would benefit from some changes. I don’t advocate being a slave to trends; I think it’s true that good taste is timeless, but this does not mean that we should live in a time capsule. Keeping things beautifully fresh and interesting cannot be underestimated for the powerful effect it has on our psyche. Life is a balance of holding on and letting go. The changes to my space that I find

the most beneficial come not only from an aesthetic assessment but also from an appraisal of function. Our spaces should serve and support our lifestyle at all stages, but our needs can change more quickly than we might imagine as children grow and we grow older. Making sure that a child’s room continues to evolve to suit his changing needs or repurposing a room to

“We must always change, renew, rejuvenate ourselves; otherwise we harden.” ~ Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

serve a new hobby ensures that each fulfills its highest potential. I constantly remind myself that our things are here to serve us and not the other way around. This notion helps me keep my spaces efficient, clean and vibrant. Small changes, like swapping a dated area rug for one that feels up-to-the-minute, reupholstering an old chair in a wonderful new fabric or refinishing a favorite piece of furniture, can have a potent impact on updating a space. Simply shifting things around, putting some things away or bringing a piece from one space to another can give us that change that keeps things feeling healthy and vital. Sometimes saying goodbye to a few pieces that have served us well to make room for others that speak to us now can breathe fresh energy into a space and press it into a new term of service. My favorite approach when I begin this process is to take photographs of the pieces that will be living together in a room — either my own or a vendor’s photograph, if an item is still current — and lay them out together on a digital page. This way I can see it all at a glance and add or subtract until I come up with just the right combination. When something is holding a space back but I can’t tell exactly which piece it is, this is a great way to unmask the culprit. This process also highlights how changing just a few pieces can make everything feel new. Seeing the images on a page helps me view things with detachment and clearly navigate a new path. This way I never second-guess my decisions and feel confident moving forward with a plan. This collage is one I created to help me refresh my master bedroom furnishings this year. I was surprised to discover, with the help of this visual aid, that a few of the pieces I thought I would never part with were holding my bedroom back from the space I wanted it to be. Trading out a carpet, purchasing new bedside chests and lamps and reframing a favorite painting were all that was needed to give me a completely reinvented space that I adore once again.

And what to do with the things you would like to recycle? Assuming that friends or family are not the lucky recipients, here is a list of great options: • letgo is a free digital app, self-described as “a fun way to help you buy and sell second hand stuff within your neighborhood.” • For things of moderate value, Craigslist is the tried and true way to sell your stuff without the hassle of shipping. craigslist.org • For your items that are a little more on the collectable side, eBay is a great resource — shipping by the seller is usually required. ebay.com • We are lucky to have several new brickand-mortar consignment shops in our area. They usually take a 50% split to sell your items. • They call themselves a “designer marketplace of nearly new furniture finds” where you can consign your designer pieces online or find almost new pieces for yourself. Viyet just began servicing the Los Angeles area last year. viyet.com • A great option for your gently used furniture and accessories is donation to Habitat ReStore or Goodwill. The donation may be tax-deductible, and these stores often offer free pick-up of large items. The start of a new year encourages us to assess the status quo and invites improvement. My mantra is ”keep it clean, keep it beautiful and keep it working for you.” Wishing you a joyous New Year, and as always, here’s to creating your own Noble Spaces! n

THE SIX Restaurant Calabasas’ own Gastropub By Pax Ansley Photography by Marvin Steindler

T

he Six Restaurant provides a full-service dining experience, as well as a thriving music and entertainment scene, showcasing local talent and popular musicians. In business since 2010 with two locations in Studio City and West Los Angeles, The Six joined the Calabasas restaurant scene in December 2013. It has quickly become a community favorite and was named the OpenTable Diners’ Choice 2015 Winner. Open for brunch (Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.), lunch and dinner, the specialties include gourmet pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, dinner entrees, small plates, farm-fresh salads and handcrafted desserts. If you’re new to The Six, try some of their signature dishes, Six Burger, Salmon Salad and Mary’s Chicken. The streamlined, seasonal menu emphasizes the concept of “six.”

You can choose from six exciting starters, six savory entrees, six red wines, six white wines, six brews on tap and six desserts. Look for the nightly specials, too. The full-service bar offers handcrafted cocktails, such as the Farmer’s Marketini, Green Eggs and Ham and the Old Fashioned, with a happy hour seven days a week from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Bourbon Room is a large banquet room that can be used for special occasions and private events with a capacity of 60 people. It offers a full bar, versatile floor plans, stage and sound system for entertaining, retractable high-definition projector screen and a comfortable lounge area. With a close-knit staff, driven by a shared passion for contributing to the nation’s food culture, this isn’t just another fly-by-night gastropub. “Our staff is knowledgeable about the products we serve and takes care to guide our guests, ensuring the best possible dining experience. Every ingredient from our kitchen is hand-selected. Our produce is locally sourced from family farms and occasionally from our own gardens. We take influences from around the world to deliver exciting and new Americana dishes and remastered intercontinental cuisine. Everything is made from scratch in-house. There is something for everyone at The Six,” says Jay Gillespie, General Manager. The Six is the labor of love of two passionate foodies, Will Karges and Jake King, both with long histories in the Los Angeles bar and restaurant scene. They partnered up to create a local eatery that would showcase their passion for handcrafted food, as well as their love of art and aesthetics. They decided to base their concept on “The Society of Six,” a tight-knit, influential community of six artists in Northern California during the 1920s Prohibition Era. These six artists met regularly at their cabin, known as “The Chow House,” to paint and philosophize about the art world while sharing home-cooked meals and house-made brews and wine. In honor of “The Society of Six,” Karges and King created a rustic American experience to share unpretentious cuisine that is appealing, affordable and accessible to everyone. This cozy neighborhood restaurant’s eco-friendly décor was built using primarily recycled materials. Classic cast-iron skillets and rustic wood planks are often used to serve the delicious, locally-sourced cuisine. The Six takes pride in being edgy and inventive while encouraging artistic expression. The Six supports Slow Food, a global grassroots movement that aims to be everything fast food isn’t. Taking time in the kitchen ensures that the local, garden-fresh ingredients aren’t compromised by rushed preparation. It takes a bit longer, but it is well worth the wait. The Six strives to consistently provide guests with impeccable service by demonstrating warmth, graciousness, efficiency, knowledge, professionalism and integrity. The staff makes every effort to ensure that all guests who walk through the doors leave impressed and excited to come back again soon. Visit the Calabasas location, and it’s likely you’ll find more than six reasons to love The Six. To find out about new menu items, upcoming promotions, live music events and weekly stand-up comedy shows, like The Six on Facebook and follow The Six on Instagram and Twitter. It’s a great way to keep in touch and help spread the word! n

University Village Thousand Oaks

A Solid Plan with All the Extras

T

here is an old saying: Retiring without a plan is not a retirement plan. Most retirees understand that. Those who have worked all their adulthood and done well for themselves usually do have a plan. And then there are those who leave nothing to chance by choosing a CCRC, or continuing care retirement community. In Ventura County, there are several senior living options, all with various combinations of services. Among them, University Village Thousand Oaks stands out. “Residents at our community are well-prepared for life’s uncertainties,” says Ernie Sandlin, director of marketing at University Village. “Here, they have a solid plan for their future, rather than just taking events as they come.”

University Village offers a true independent lifestyle for older adults, enhanced by countless conveniences, restaurant dining, and a variety of residence options from one-, two- and three-bedroom apartment homes to freestanding single-family villas. All this is set amid what many would call luxurious surroundings. Sitting on 65 acres of picturesque valleys and rolling hills, the expansive community boasts on-site services and amenities designed to help older adults live their retirement as they want, only better. Housecleaning,

all exterior and interior maintenance, wellness programs, transportation, 24-hour safety services and more are all included. One highlight of daily life is the dining options. Menus are set by the executive chef and meals are served in multiple restaurant-style venues, from formal to casual. “Meals are social occasions,” says Ernie, “a time for residents to connect with friends and meet new neighbors.” Socializing is an important aspect of healthy aging, and older adults who live in their house rarely enjoy the interaction inherent in a CCRC. In addition to the amenity-rich lifestyle, there’s a long-term health center adjacent to the community. As Ernie explains it, “University Village residents have access to assisted living, memory care and a skilled nursing center, if ever needed. That provides peace of mind, not only for residents, but also for their families.” Indeed, many consider choosing University Village a gift to their children as much as a lifestyle enhancement for themselves. “I love this place,” says Peggy Waters, a University Village resident of four years. “And I’ve done my children the biggest favor in the world by moving here. The burden is lifted from them, so they don’t have to worry. Now that I’ve made my arrangements, I can enjoy myself.” And there’s plenty to enjoy at University Village and in the surrounding area. Located in Thousand Oaks, a city that consistently ranks as one of the safest in the United States, the community keeps residents close to world-class dining, shopping, entertainment, and everything else that makes Southern California such a desirable place to live. On campus, the maintenance-free lifestyle provides more time to get involved in the seemingly endless activities available to residents. “I have more time for dancing, more time for the Drama Club, more time for the chorus,” says Peggy, listing some of her favorite activities. “I’ve started taking a fitness class too.” With ties to nearby Cal Lutheran University, the retirement community has ample opportunity for lifelong learning. “I brought in a master teacher to teach a writing class on our campus. That’s been extremely popular.” Craig and Jennifer Zobelein have lived at University Village for six years. As Craig says, “You can’t complain about being bored here. Whatever you want to do, you can do it here.” University Village also boasts a fitness center staffed with a professional trainer, heated outdoor pool with Jacuzzi, an arts and crafts studio with classes, tennis court, a library, performing arts theater, gardening areas and even a short game golf course, among other amenities. A person might be forgiven for thinking all this comes with a prohibitive price tag. Not so, says Ernie. “Residents here understand and expect quality in all things,” he says. “And like anyone, they appreciate value. When you compare the costs of staying in your own home with everything you put into place for your lifestyle today and protection for tomorrow, choosing a CCRC like University Village is a smart and solid plan for your future.” n

WEST HILLS HOSPITAL & MEDICAL CENTER

ARIMIE CARDIOLOGY

West Hills Hospital Medical Center is one of the valuable resources available in our community. Its “Quality Care, Close to Home” is a well-documented fact that impacts the quality of life for people who reside in the western part of the San Fernando Valley.

Dr. Raluca Arimie is an interventional cardiologist and specialist in cardiovascular disease and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area including West Hills Hospital and Medical Center and Northridge Hospital Medical Center. She received her medical degree in Europe at the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy and has been in practice for 13 years. Her specialty is working with patients who have been diagnosed with coronary heart disease, a condition that is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States.

Douglas Long President and Chief Executive Officer 7300 Medical Center Dr. West Hills 818.676.4000 westhillshospital.com

Ranked among the top hospitals in Los Angeles County for heart attack treatment response, West Hills Hospital is the first accredited chest pain center in Los Angeles. The medical center is also designated as an advanced stroke center and accredited by the Joint Commission. Home of the renowned Grossman Burn Center, West Hills Hospital also ranks among the top 10 percent nationwide in response time for heart attack victims and was recently ranked by The Joint Commission as a “Top Performer on Key Quality Measures.” West Hills Hospital’s 30-bed ER is available 24/7, features a state of the art helipad and is approved for Pediatrics. For average wait times in the ER, text ER to 23000. For more information, visit texterhelp.com Voted “Readers’ Choice” in the Los Angeles Daily News for three years in a row, the hospital is also home to The Center for Bariatric Surgery, the West Hills Regional Heart & Vascular Institute and the New Beginnings Center for Maternal and Newborn Care.

Raluca Arimie MD 7325 Medical Center Dr. #306 West Hills 18350 Roscoe Bl. #601 Northridge 818.710.8045 ArimieCardiology.com

Dr. Arimie is also a specialist in women’s heart disease that affects one in four women in the U.S. Although heart disease is often thought of as a problem for men, more women than men die of heart disease each year. The challenge is that most heart disease symptoms in women may be different from those in men, who may not have heart attack symptoms related to chest pain. Women with heart disease often experience symptoms including neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back or abdominal discomfort, shortness of breath, right arm pain, nausea or vomiting, sweating, lightheadedness, dizziness or unusual fatigue. Dr. Arimie’s goal is to work with and educate her female patients on how to prevent heart disease. This is especially important for women who have diabetes, post-menopausal women and women with metabolic syndromes including fat around the abdomen, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high triglycerides which have a greater impact on developing heart disease for women than in men.

Dr. Alen Cohen is a board-certified nose and sinus surgeon and assistant clinical professor of surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He is also the founder and director of the Southern California Sinus Institute (SCSI), which has become one of the premier sinus centers in Los Angeles and Southern California. Thousands of patients have benefitted from Dr. Cohen’s life-changing procedures, which include the medical and surgical treatment of patients with all nasal and sinus disorders, including nasal obstruction, deviated septum, environmental allergies, acute and chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, and sinus headaches. One of the most common procedures Dr. Cohen routinely performs is the revolutionary, in-office Balloon Sinuplasty™ procedure, for which he is one of the top three performers on the West Coast. This amazing procedure dilates the sinus openings with a balloon (just like opening a clogged artery around the heart) so the sinuses can drain and the person can breathe better, without headaches and recurrent infections. Dr. Cohen has also personally pioneered a breakthrough procedure in the treatment of more-advanced, chronic sinusitis; deviated septa; nasal polyps; and sinus headaches called Minimally Invasive Image-Guided Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (MIGSS™). As such, patients routinely come to him from all over Southern California for management of their chronic nose and sinus problems for definitive relief.

5 WAYS TO SCULPT YOUR BODY L

awrence Osman, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist and the new owner of the Calabasas Med Spa. Early in his career, Dr. Osman recognized the frustration of both men and women who were not able to slim down unwanted areas of fat through diet and exercise. According to Dr. Osman, “Many of us, male or female, have a ‘problem area’ where we seem to deposit fat. Typically, women store fat in their thighs, hips, back, abdomen, chin and also the back of their upper arms. Men tend to store fat in their midsection, which includes their lower abs and flanks, but they can also store it in their chest and chin.” There are five types of fat-reduction and body-sculpting procedures that have produced optimal results for Dr. Osman’s patients. Dr. Osman prefers these procedures due to many factors, including their safety and amount of downtime needed.

Liposuction Using Only Local Anesthesia One of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures that Dr. Osman performs is liposuction using only local anesthesia. Dr. Osman was trained directly by Dr. Klein, the cosmetic surgeon who pioneered this procedure. Liposuction using only local anesthesia offers patients optimal fat removal with the highest safety record, fastest recovery and least post-operative pain. In liposuction under local anesthesia, patients are awake during the entire procedure so they avoid the risks of general anesthesia. Medication is given to help patients relax to ensure that they stay comfortable. More fat can be removed when liposuction is performed using local anesthesia because fat is loosened and spread apart as the anesthetic solution infiltrates. Smaller instruments and less force are needed to remove the fat, which leads to less trauma, smoother results and a quicker recovery. While many patients go through a painful and prolonged recovery after traditional liposuction surgery, most of Dr. Osman’s patients can return to work within one to two days after their procedure, and they only have to wear a compression garment for a few days. The results from liposuction are permanent.

CoolSculpting CoolSculpting is a proven technology for the noninvasive reduction of fat bulges. Using cold technology, CoolSculpting freezes fat to eliminate it. When fat cells are chilled to a certain temperature, they begin to die. CoolSculpting is performed in the office without anesthesia. There is minimal to no discomfort during treatment. After treatment, there may be redness, bruising or numbness lasting up to a week, but there is essentially no recovery. Studies demonstrate a 20% to 23% significant reduction in the superficial fat layer thickness following a single treatment. Patients who get the best results with CoolSculpting are those with specific, localized areas of unwanted fat. Hips, thighs, flanks, abdomen, chest, back fat and muffin tops can be targeted. CoolSculpting is an effective and safe way to eliminate stubborn fat.

SmartLipo SmartLipo, or laser liposuction, is a procedure for fat removal like liposuction that utilizes the energy generated from a laser fiber to “melt” fat away. In SmartLipo, a laser fiber is inserted into the pocket of fat to be reduced. The energy generated by the laser promotes the destruction of fat cells. Several published studies on SmartLipo show reductions in the overall volume of fat with the treatment. The laser effects of SmartLipo may also help reduce bruising and speed recovery. As an added benefit, laser liposuction may also tighten the overlying skin by inducing collagen formation.

Thermage If loose skin is your main concern, you may wish to consider Thermage. Thermage is a tissue-tightening and shaping procedure that tightens the skin on your face and tightens and contours your body. A single Thermage treatment safely stimulates the contraction of existing collagen and spurs the production of new, healthy collagen. Improvement is visible immediately and continues for months afterward. Results can last for years depending on your skin condition and your natural aging process. Thermage is used on the face and body to tighten the jowls, neck, eyelids, forehead, abdomen, knees and arms and anywhere else the skin needs firming. Thermage works by using special technology to heat the collagen network in the skin. At a certain temperature, collagen immediately contracts and new collagen starts to form. Often, only a single treatment is needed, but one or two additional treatments may be desired a few months later. Best of all, there is no downtime, and Thermage can be used safely on all skin types.

Kybella Kybella is the only nonsurgical treatment that is FDA approved to reduce moderate to severe fat pockets under the chin, also known as double chin. It works by destroying the fat cells that accumulate there. Kybella is administered by injection into the area of undesired fat. Each treatment takes approximately 15 minutes. Many patients see visible results after two to four treatment sessions, though some patients require up to six separate sessions for optimal results. Once injected, Kybella breaks apart the fat cells right away. Within 15 minutes, it is no longer active and its effect on fat cells is complete. The most important thing about the results is that they are permanent. Once fat cells are destroyed with Kybella, they never return. n

Vape Culture Attracts Teens:

Poses Harmful Risks By Beth Cone Kramer

S

old in kid-enticing flavors, like cotton candy, Swedish fish and peanut butter cup, e-cigarettes have become increasingly popular with local preteens, teens and college students. In fact, according to the California Department of Health, as of 2014, 8th graders were twice as likely to have tried vaping as traditional cigarettes.

Dr. Remer Altmann says she has warned teens of the potential dangers of vaping. The doctor says e-cigarettes are viewed by the medical community as a gateway to cigarettes and other drugs. The American Academy of Pediatrics is lobbying to change the minimum age for all tobacco products to 21. The California State Senate approved a bill that is headed for the State Assembly.

The use of personal vaporizers, which can be refilled, has been increasing. Sales of e-cigarettes, vaporizers and “juice” has been restricted to those 18 and over, though online sales make it easier for minors to purchase.

Electronic cigarettes are marketed as a safer alternative to smoking, but are they really? The American Heart Association considers e-cigarettes to be a risk because they target teens and young adults, keeping people hooked on nicotine and renormalizing tobacco use, which has been on the decline. Calabasas pediatrician and best-selling author Tanya Remer Altmann, MD, FAAP, says vaping brings a number of health concerns. The flavored nicotine “juice” is enticing not only to teens, but to toddlers and babies.

“The concern now is exposure to liquid nicotine, which is so toxic that half a teaspoon can kill a small child,” Dr Tanya Altmann explains. Nicotine is dangerous, even when absorbed by touch through the skin or through the mouth and gums or when swallowed. Accidental ingestion has become fairly commonplace. In fact, between 2012 and 2014, the number of calls to California Poison Control regarding e-cigarette nicotine poisoning in kids under 5 increased by 2100 percent. Although vaping is sold as a healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes, the vapor contains fine particles that may cause inflammation and irritation and even induce asthma attacks. Additives and propellants in the juice contain formaldehyde and numerous other chemicals, many of which appear on California’s Prop 65 list as possible carcinogens or potential causes of reproductive harm.

96 Calabasas Style

Many local communities, including Calabasas and Agoura Hills, have extended their secondhand smoke ordinances to include ecigarettes. Los Angeles, which includes Woodland Hills and other San Fernando Valley communities, also has restrictions on vaping in restaurants, workplaces and other public areas. Still, vaping is permitted in numerous vaping lounges in the area.

How can you speak to your children about vaping? The California Department of Public Health suggests talking to kids about the known health threats and keeping an open dialogue. Let kids know that the nicotine and other chemicals in ecigarettes are dangerous and could be a gateway to smoking traditional cigarettes. Dr. Remer Altmann shares that parents are children’s most important role models. If you’re using e-cigarettes to quit smoking, avoid vaping in front of your kids. Avoid leaving e-cigarettes or e-liquid where children have access. If children do swallow e-liquid or it comes in contact with skin or gets in the eyes, contact the California Poison Control System immediately at 800.222.1222. n

DR. KERNER PERFORMS BALLOON SINUPLASTY By Beth Cone Kramer Photography by Marvin Steindler

I

n the past seven years, Dr. Marc Kerner, MD, FACS, Medical Director of the Calwest Head & Neck Surgical Institute, has performed over 300 balloon sinuplasty procedures in the Westlake Village and Northridge offices. He is one of the few doctors in the United States able to perform this technologically advanced procedure. Balloon sinuplasty (BSP) is a safe, effective procedure for chronic sinusitis patients and others. The procedure uses a small, flexible balloon catheter to open blocked sinus passageways to allow for the drainage of mucus that builds up in patients with chronic sinusitis. With BSP, there is no surgical cutting of nasal bone or tissue. Although recovery time varies, most patients can return to work and normal activities within two days.

98

Calabasas Style

“This procedure is great for people with bad allergies who do not have bad septum deviation or nasal polyps but who suffer from stuffiness and post-nasal drip but who do not respond well to medical therapy,” says Dr. Kerner. “These patients do not necessarily need aggressive surgery. This allows us to treat a very large group of people who don’t fall into cases of those who do better with medicine or who don’t but who have some anatomical basis requiring more aggressive treatment.” Dr. Kerner adds, “In the seven years since I started performing this procedure, the results have been amazing. During the latest twoyear, widespread tracking study, only three patients out of 100 needed retreatment.” One of about 850 double board certified surgeons in the U.S. by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology,

Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Kerner says, “I was one of the early adopters in terms of technology. I helped develop a lighted tracking device so x-rays were not needed.” During the minimally invasive procedure, with the area numbed, the patient may feel some pressure that lasts a few seconds each time, with five seconds being the longest. Once the procedure is done, says the doctor, there is no discomfort at all. The patient is able to breathe much better. Patients are advised against heavy lifting or exercise for one day. Afterwards, irrigation with saline solution is advised. The technology for this procedure was adopted from angioplasty, in which small balloon catheters are threaded into either a blood vessel, as in angioplasty, or into the small sinus openings, dilating them and preventing them from the blockage that occurs with infections and allergy.

For Hundreds of Satisfied Patients Patient, Judy Lucove, is enthusiastic about her results. “My sinuses were always blocked. I had sinus headaches and no drainage. I snored,” she says. The Calabasas resident had tried everything, from allergy pills to rhinoplasty and nothing had worked. When she had a cough that would not go away, she was treated by an inhalation therapist who couldn’t stop the coughing so he sent her to Dr. Kerner. “Within three minutes, he knew I had acid reflux, which made me cough,” she says. “We started an elimination diet and some medication. My cough went away but I still had sinus headaches.” Following a CT exam, Dr. Kerner saw bone spurs and blockages in her sinuses that were preventing anything from getting out of her sinuses. He did the balloon sinuplasty procedure and immediately, her

sinuses were draining and she could breathe. “My husband is happy that I don’t snore anymore!” she says. “That’s one of the best benefits. I don’t get poked in the middle of the night to turn over because I can breathe! I haven’t had a sinus infection since, and I’m a happy camper!” About Calwest Head & Neck Surgical Institute: Calwest Head & Neck Surgical Institute is the premiere center for comprehensive head and neck surgical problems in Los Angeles and Southern California. With offices in Westlake Village and Northridge, the institute’s surgeons are all board certified and members of the American College of Surgeons, treating patients for a wide variety of ear, nose and throat disorders with the highest level of surgical care in head and neck surgery, facial plastic surgery, spine surgery and

pain management, as well as balloon sinuplasty. The offices offer outpatient surgery and in-office CT scanning. Dr. Marc Kerner, MD, FACS, medical director of the Institute, has published many articles and developed a number of cutting-edge surgical techniques and instruments. Is it just

SNORING or is it sleep apnea? By Jeffrey Schechter, DDS

S

noring isn’t sexy, and sleep apnea is a common and potentially serious disorder. You snore during sleep when airflow from your mouth or nose goes to your lungs, causing the tissues of your throat to vibrate, making a loud, raspy noise. Loud snoring can make it hard for you or your partner to get a good night’s rest. Snoring may point to other medical problems, such as sleep apnea. If you have sleep apnea, your breathing becomes very shallow during sleep or is briefly interrupted in breathing lapses. These lapses usually last about 10 to 15 seconds and can occur up to hundreds of times a night, jolting you out of your natural sleep rhythm. Consequently, you spend more time in light sleep and less time in deep, restorative sleep, which you need in order to be energetic, mentally sharp and productive the next day. Thus, sleep apnea affects both the way you breathe while sleeping and how you function during the day. Sleep apnea is treatable but often goes undetected. To help ensure that this doesn’t happen, look for the major signs of sleep apnea, which include snoring, breathing pauses and/or choking or gasping sounds. Other common signs of sleep apnea include fighting sleepiness during the day, morning headaches, waking up frequently to urinate and dry mouth/sore throat upon waking. A physician is needed to properly diagnose sleep apnea using a diagnostic test called polysomnography, which is an overnight sleep study. Once diagnosed, your physician can discuss treatment options. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy is usually the first treatment choice for adults with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP is effective but a bit clunky as it requires a pump to generate pressurized air, a conduction tube and a mask that fits over your nose. Unfortunately, 40 percent of people who try CPAP don’t stick with it, claiming that the device is not comfortable when sleeping. But thanks to the 18 million Americans that suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, the device manufacturers have a powerful incentive to find solutions and there are many treatment

100 Calabasas Style

options, including more than 100 different types of FDA-approved oral devices. Your dentist can recommend a treatment device that best suits your particular needs and fit it in the safest and most comfortable way. One recommended device is the mandibular advancement device. This is one of the most widely used dental appliances for the treatment of sleep apnea. It resembles a sports mouth guard in appearance and is useful in forcing the lower jaw down and forward slightly. This offers tremendous help in keeping the airway open and preventing breathing problems. A tongue-retraining device is also recommended to correct sleep apnea. This splint holds the tongue in the right position and works to keep the airway open. After your dentist completes your clinical evaluation, the recommended oral appliance is fabricated using digital or physical impressions and models of your teeth. These models are sent to a dental lab where the appliance is made. Your dentist then adjusts and fits your appliance to maximize its comfort and effectiveness. Regular dental visits are crucial because these devices require periodic adjustments. Whatever treatment option you choose, it is important to address the issue of snoring and sleep apnea to ensure a restful night’s sleep so everyone can be their most focused, productive and healthy self. Wishing you restful and restorative sleep and much health and joy in the New Year. n Mountain View Dentistry 26560 Agoura Rd., #102 Calabasas 818.880.4023 forabeautifulsmile.com

Five Little “Beauty Secrets” so you

Look your Best

By Elena RIchards

There’s a reason why one of Dr. Sarmela Sunder’s websites is littlebeautysecret.com. As a double board certified and fellowshiptrained surgeon specializing in facial plastic surgery, Dr. Sunder, a local Calabasas resident, believes that men and women can put their best face forward by opting to have minimally invasive procedures that can restore the youthful appearance of their face without significant cost or extensive downtime. Here’s are five of her best beauty secrets that can take years off your appearance while you maintain a totally natural and youthful look.

1. Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty)

We’ve all heard the expression “your eyes are the windows to your soul.” This is because our eyes are a major focal point in personal interactions and how we communicate emotions and personality. Unfortunately, the first signs of aging typically appear around the eyes. In our late 30s, the skin around our eyes starts to lose elasticity, causing our lids to droop, which can make us look older and impair our vision. Bags and puffiness can also form around our eyes, giving us a tired, worn-out look. An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, corrects these problems through the gentle and precise removal of excess eyelid skin and redistribution of fat. An eyelid lift can be performed on the upper eyelids by removing the excess skin that is causing the hooding. A small incision is made in a natural skin crease so that it is camouflaged easily, and within a few weeks, the incision is barely perceptible. In a lower blepharoplasty, the incision is usually placed on the inside of the lower eyelid, so there is no visible scar. Having one or both procedures can eliminate years off of the part of the face that everyone is naturally drawn to — with minimal recovery time.

2. Endoscopic Forehead Lift

In our late 30s and early 40s, our skin begins to lose collagen and elasticity and our faces start to succumb to the forces of gravity. Our brows becomes heavy and start to droop, while forehead lines deepen into folds, making us look tired, angry or even sad. Even when we feel upbeat and energetic, this loose, wrinkled skin on the forehead can make us look fatigued and worn out

102

Calabasas Style

and can influence attitude and erode self-confidence. It can also affect the way that others perceive us.

A brow or forehead lift is a great way to combat the signs of aging in the upper part of the face. Similar to a facelift, the procedure reverses the effects of gravity by restoring the forehead and upper brow to its more youthful position. Men and women can both greatly benefit from this minimally invasive procedure that shows no visible scars since the incisions are made within the hairline.

3. Mini-Lift

Many of us start to see the first signs of an aging face with the beginning of jowls or the start of some droopy skin along the jaw line. While some of us are ready to address this issue in a definitive manner, many feel that they are not ready to undergo a full facelift or neck lift. A mini-lift is the perfect option for those who want a less-invasive option with shorter downtime. A mini-lift, which is a mini facelift, is sometimes called a “weekend lift,” “s-lift,” “lunchtime lift” or “quick lift.” By using small incisions around the ear, the mini lift can tighten as well as lift the tissues of the jawline and lower face. It can be performed under local anesthetic with some sedation, without the need for general anesthesia. Some patients choose to be completely awake for this procedure, while others opt for light sedation. The results last up to several years, and because it is a less-involved procedure, the mini-lift is usually a more affordable option. This procedure usually requires a seven to 10-day recovery period, and while the cost of the procedure varies depending on each person’s anatomy, the general cost range is $6,000 to $9,000.

4. Fat Transfer

Today, we know more about aging than ever before. This exciting new information is revolutionizing the way we approach plastic surgery. While gravity and wrinkles were once thought to be the primary source of physical aging, we now know that several other factors come into play, like loss of volume (or fat) in the face. Once the face loses volume, it becomes more vulnerable to the effects of gravity, resulting in sunken cheeks and eyes, as well as a skeletal contour. In addition to the use of non-surgical der-

mal fillers, volume loss can also be restored through fat transfer, an innovative procedure that actually uses the body’s own fat to help re-inflate the face to look younger. Fat transfer involves removing a very small amount of fat from a donor area, such as the abdomen, thighs or buttocks. The fat cells are carefully prepared and then injected into the face, similar to the way injectable fillers are used. Compared to facial fillers, the effects of a fat transfer procedure last much longer.

5. The Butterfly Lift™

The Butterfly Lift™ is a new procedure that Dr. Sunder patented that incorporates each patient’s stem cells and growth factors. This is an in-office and minimally invasive procedure designed to restore volume to the face and improve skin quality without any scars. The goal is not to change how we look, but rather to recreate the natural, healthy appearance of a youthful face. This proprietary procedure capitalizes on our own body’s ability to regenerate collagen, both at the superficial and deeper levels. It can be performed under local anesthetic. The best part of the procedure is that patients benefit naturally from substances found in their own bodies. n

Skiing Towards a Cure: The Hidden Hills Guys Ski Trip By Pax Ansley

S

ix years ago, Patrick Finn decided he wanted to organize a ski trip with his neighborhood friends. He and 14 other local men from Hidden Hills packed up their snow gear and headed to Deer Valley Resort in Utah for some winter fun on the slopes. Finn’s group had so much fun, and word quickly spread. The year after, his group grew, and it has continued to grow exponentially until, five years later, their numbers have reached 50. Patrick’s quintessential guy getaway quickly turned from a small gathering of friends and neighbors to an epic extravaganza for a good cause. When Patrick’s friend Craig Aaronson was taken by brain cancer at the end of 2014, Patrick knew exactly how to commemorate him. Craig was one of original skiers on the annual Deer Valley Resort skiing trip. Patrick decided to turn this convention of skiing pals into an opportunity for giving back and remembering Craig. This year’s trip is dedicated to Craig and all those who suffer from brain cancer. Each of the 50 skiers will be taking sponsors who will pledge to donate a certain amount of money for every thousand vertical feet skied by that skier. The skiers are estimated to complete between 40,000 and 80,000 vertical feet of skiing over the four days. With the help of the local community and his group of skier pals, Patrick hopes to raise a significant amount of money to fund brain cancer research and development. Every bit counts when working towards a cure. Patrick has this to say about his undertaking: “Today, nearly

104 Calabasas Style

700,000 Americans are living with a brain tumor and many more will be diagnosed each year. Brain tumors are deadly and can strike men, women and children at any time. Unite with us in the fight against brain tumors, and let’s do something positive to help find better treatments and a cure.” All proceeds from the trip will go to the National Brain Tumor Society. Donors of $100 or more will be entered into several different raffles to win some fabulous prizes. They have a number of restaurants and stores sponsoring the event with gift certificates and prizes. So far, sponsors include Polachecks, Ben Bridge, Sports LTD, LUKE Bar & Restaurant, Pedalers Fork, Trillium Sports Medicine, The Hainer Family Foundation, The Foundry Fine Jewelry, Lenox Advisors, Crescent Realty and LBPM (LB Property Management). Please visit the website for an updated list of sponsors and more details. In addition to these great incentives, Patrick hopes the community will rally behind the cause and help him promote awareness for those affected by this awful disease by choosing a skier to sponsor with a pledge. As Patrick has demonstrated, it only takes one person to make a difference. It takes one person to inspire others to make a difference as well. To find out more about Skiing for a Cure, check out their website at hiddenhillsguysskitrip.com or go directly to the charity event page at endbraintumors.com. n

ayne and Scott Garber moved from Atlanta to The Oaks of Calabasas in 2013 and love living the Calabasas lifestyle. Scott is a successful entrepreneur, and both are busy parents raising their two sons — Jack, who is 3-years-old, and his younger brother, Owen, who turned 2 this past December. Like most busy parents, their daily routine is one of balancing a full regiment of work, parenting, preschool, errands and social commitments, which keeps them on a steadfast and even keel. That is, of course, until Murphy’s Law comes into play, like when your child suddenly becomes ill on a weekend when the doctor’s office is closed and your life gets thrown into a tizzy. This is exactly what happened to Rayne and Scott when little Jack began showing symptoms that he was developing a major ear infection. “Jack is a very healthy and happy child,” explains Rayne. “But this particular weekend, Jack was becoming more and more irritable, crying and fussing, and he kept pulling at his ear. He was in pain and I knew that

106 Calabasas Style

we needed to get him to a doctor right away, but the thought of getting both kids packed up for a long and tedious wait in the emergency room, filled with other sick or injured people, seemed like a horrible prospect.” Fortunately, Scott and Rayne had a better option because Rayne had heard about Heal — an innovative, on-demand service that is changing healthcare in America. When you use the Heal service, board certified physicians and pediatricians actually come to you, reminiscent of the “old days” when doctors made house calls.

house calls, Rayne and Scott were astonished that their out-ofpocket cost was just $99. “We didn’t have to deal with insurance deductibles or expensive ER medical bills,” says Scott. “We got great service in the comfort of our own home, and Jack got the highest level of professional care. The medication that they gave him after he was examined started to work immediately, and he slept comfortably through the night. For $99, why would anyone NOT use this service?” The concept for Heal is the brainchild of Heal founder Dr. Renee Dua. As a board certified nephrologist and the former chief of medicine at two L.A. hospitals, Dr. Dua says the idea for Heal came from a personal experience. The mother of two sons, Dr. Dua and her husband had spent eight hours in the ER with their infant son for an ailment that ended up not requiring emergency attention. “Frustrated, I turned to my husband and said, ‘What we need is an app, a doctor who is nearby and can be in our house within an hour,” says Dua. “I realized there had to be a better way to get quality care to patients when they needed it.”

“One of my friends had recently used the Heal service, and she convinced me that I should take two minutes to download the Heal app to my cell phone and register with them, just in case I ever had a medical issue and couldn’t get in touch with my own doctors. I’m really glad that I took her advice,” says Rayne. “I initially downloaded the app, thinking it was just a precautionary thing to do, not really thinking I would ever need to use it.” That Sunday, Rayne used the Heal app, and 45 minutes later, a doctor and nurse from Heal arrived at their Calabasas home. Both the doctor and nurse live and work in the area and had become affiliated with Heal to offer this kind of in-home medical care during off hours when they are not at their medical offices treating their regular patients.

The Heal on-demand service provides treatment for kids and adults and house calls from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., seven days a week, even on holidays. You can access world-class physicians and pediatricians that are licensed to practice in the state of California who come to you in the comfort and convenience of your own home, office or hotel room. In most cases, the doctor arrives at your door in less than an hour. Available in Calabasas and throughout the greater Los Angeles area, as well as Orange County and San Francisco, Heal charges only $99 per visit. They also accept most PPO insurance plans from Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, UnitedHealthcare and Cigna. You can download Heal at iTunes for an iPhone or Apple watch or you can find it at the Play Store for an Android phone. If you don’t have a smartphone, you can call to schedule your visit at 844.644.HEAL. You can use Heal for urgent care issues and also to schedule routine physical exams and well checks. Heal is also are offering the flu shot in your home, at your convenience for the whole family. n For more information or to download the iPhone or Android app, visit getheal.com.

“The whole experience was amazing,” explains Rayne. “The exam took place on the sofa in my family room, where I could hold and comfort Jack on my lap while the doctor examined him. While Jack was still crying from the pain, he was far less agitated than he would have been in a typical ER examination room. And my younger son, Owen, kept Jack amused and entertained with all the toys the boys typically play with in the family room while the exam was going on.” According to Rayne, “The whole procedure took about 15 minutes. They were not only efficient, they had this caring personal touch, and they took time to answer all of our questions. I didn’t have to wait for hours in the ER waiting room. I didn’t have to fill out endless insurance forms, and I didn’t have to worry about getting a prescription or dropping off a prescription at the drug store. The doctor was able to submit the prescription directly to our pharmacist by using his iPad, and the prescription was filled and ready for us when we picked it up a few hours later. Basically, we were able to manage the health care for or son on our terms.” In addition to the ease and convenience of using Heal for medical

SmartGraft Procedure Offers Minimally Invasive Solution to Hair Loss By Beth Cone Kramer

T

hose with hair loss used to have a few options — baseball caps, hairpieces, comb-overs or hair restoration, which required major surgery and a slow, painful recovery time — but not anymore. Vitality Institute of Agoura offers an in-office Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedure using SmartGraft. The staff at Vitality works under Dr. Michael Sarti, an expert in the procedure, which is a form of laser surgery. SmartGraft is state-of-the-art technology developed by physicians, medical scientists and engineers. After a typical five- or six-hour in-office procedure with virtually no discomfort, patients experience a short recovery time and then enjoy a natural-looking head of hair with permanent results. How does SmartGraft work? Using a local anesthetic, physicians use the SmartGraft device to extract individual, micro hair grafts from the back of a patient’s head. The extracted hairs are counted, separated and placed into an environmentally controlled holding canister until they are implanted into the balding spots. The procedure can be used on men and women. Unlike other procedures, SmartGraft will not leave patients with a visible linear scar. With traditional procedures, grafts are removed in a large strip, which requires stitches. With this procedure, grafts are removed in individual micro grafts. Vitality Institute of Agoura CEO Kelly Rainey says, “After having a SmartGraft procedure, most patients can return to their normal activities within one to two days and will see new hair growth approximately three to four months after the procedure.” The newly transplanted hair grows back in several phases, with noticeable improvement in six months and full growth at 12 to 14 months. Approximately one in three men and women experience hair loss. The most prevalent cause in men is male pattern baldness, caused by a combination of hormonal activity and heredity. The scalp’s hair follicles become smaller and eventually develop a shortened growth cycle, typically occurring at the hairline and/or on top of the scalp. For women, hair loss can be attributed to a number of conditions and lifestyle factors, including extreme stress, dieting and pregnancy. Other factors include thyroid issues, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and alopecia areata. n

MEDICINE

By Marc Cohen

C

an a computer or a mobile device actually help you with your health needs? Is it a good idea to consult a doctor through your smartphone? Technology has advanced to the level that allows physicians to diagnose your conditions via your tablets or phones. However, like all things, whether the consultation helps or not depends on the skill and quality of the doctor.

Want to keep track of all your medical records in one spot? Microsoft’s HealthVault is another free program. It is an online service and mobile app that allows you to upload your own medical records. You can then share your records with health care professionals. It also connects to many available fitness trackers and bathroom scales.

We know that health and medical apps can make it easier to access medical information quickly and can answer some questions. Let’s take a look at some of the available options.

Having a baby? I have you covered with Text4baby. It is run by National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition and provides free text messages that offer health-related advice to assure a healthy pregnancy, with no messaging charges for almost all cell carriers in the U.S.

Virtual doctor via video visit: With Doctor On Demand, you can actually have a video consultation with a board certified physician. He or she can help you in non-emergency situations, like when you have a cold or the flu. If you injured yourself participating in your weekend basketball or soccer match, the physician can diagnose and prescribe medication for you. Doctors are available in all 50 states, with 1,400 state-licensed physicians. The $40 flat rate per session certainly beats a visit to the local emergency room or a doctor’s visit, which could cost thousands of dollars. It can’t, however, take an x-ray if needed.

Doctor to your home with a tap on your iPhone: With Heal, you can order a doctor with a tap on your iPhone and receive care on your doorstep in under an hour. Backgroundchecked, licensed, primary care physicians arrive when it’s convenient for you wherever you are, literally — at your home, office or hotel, for example. For people who want to register, visit getheal.com to download the Android app from the Google Play Store or the iPhone and Apple Watch apps from the iTunes App Store. If you aren’t tech-savvy, you can dial 844.644.HEAL.

Having difficulty remembering your prescriptions? Check out CareZone, a free app that keeps track of your medication and even reminds you to take your pills.

NuLife

Calabasas based NuLife recovery broadens the scope of substance abuse treatment and supports the recovery process. By Elena Richards

N

uLife Recovery Centers, co-founded by JD Meints and Kage Njaka, has multiple locations — in Calabasas, Woodland Hills and near the Los Angeles/Ventura County line. The centers treat individuals suffering from addiction and alcoholism who continue to struggle with chemical dependency, relapse and addictive behaviors. The programs at NuLife Recovery Centers address the suffering of not only the addict, but their loved ones as well, those who witness the relapsing and damaging behavior that can ultimately manifest in broken families and loss of hope. NuLife Recovery Centers offers solutions to those chasing the elusive dream of attaining quality sobriety. The NuLife Recovery Centers’ philosophy focuses on the unique characteristics of each individual addict and uses customized substance abuse treatment options that focus on the underlying factors driving the addiction. NuLife Recovery Centers’ programs take into consideration clients’ inability to enjoy simple pleasures in life just as much as they address clinical deficiencies and damaging behavioral patterns. Among the many key, unique qualities of the NuLife Residential Drug Treatment Program is this customized level of care around

each client’s recovery needs and specific addiction traits and patterns. By recognizing these individualistic needs, NuLife can provide a more integrative and effective avenue for attaining long-term, quality sobriety with numerous innovative programs, such as the NuLife Recovery Center Outpatient Program, Music Therapy Program and Aftercare & Sober Living Programs, among others. These programs are received with great interest by clients, and they produce recovery success and demonstrate the importance of NuLife’s commitment to seeking out diverse ways of reaching clients. The NuLife Outpatient Center in Calabasas opened in November and is dedicated to remaining on the cutting edge of advancements within the scope of addiction and staying fluid in the treatment of substance abuse and related mental health issues. The center is open daily, with programs addressing experiences and solutions led by licensed clinicians and group facilitators. The Intensive Outpatient Program promotes health and wellness of clients through the center’s wellness program, gym and fitness club and nutritional workshops. Recreational activities and massage are available as additional wellness tools. The resources and programming encourage long-term health goals and awareness of the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle.

Another of NuLife’s truly impressive programs is the Music Therapy program for musicians and music professionals. This program is a unique, therapeutic tool that has proven to broaden the scope of substance abuse treatment and support the recovery process. The co-founders, Meints and Njaka, have backgrounds in the music industry and believe in the power of music and the therapeutic approach it can bring to broadening spirituality. Recovery from drug addiction and alcoholism is a process that often knows no bounds, and when the soul lights up through new channels, it opens new pathways for resurgence of the spirit. The music therapy program provides an onsite studio, equipped for recording, mixing, engineering, mastering and making video, as well as an in-house producer and engineer with professional experience, including work for Sony, Universal and EMI. Another arm of NuLife is The HARP (Hope and Recovery Place) Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping musicians overcome drug addiction and related mental health issues. The HARP Foundation merges music production with clinical recovery, a process that has shown much success and that inspires a whole new level of sobriety. This is where passion, beauty and recovery intersect, and seeing it manifest in the eyes of the afflicted is a mind-blowing experience! Gifted artists who dedicate themselves to their artistry, which brings so much joy and beauty, often push the limits for their art with minimal recognition. Musicians are often more

susceptible to addiction and alcoholism due to the scope of their work and the people with whom they are affiliated. Like any other addict or alcoholic, however, artists find themselves in full-blown addiction through seemingly innocent dabbling over the course of months or years and, just like anyone else, become completely debilitated by it. Due to their oft-enhanced ability to remain in touch with deeper feelings and emotions, artists seem to persevere throughout the treatment process. It has been our experience that musicians who have gone through treatment remain active in their sobriety and quite often reach tremendous new heights in their work within a relatively short time span. The HARP Foundation remains committed to this particular industry because it is where the passions of the co-founders lie. For Meints and Njaka, love of music and love of helping others recover from drug addiction feeds the heart and soul. Addiction continues to take new forms and shatter lives each day. NuLife Recovery Centers remains committed to creative and innovative programs and a philosophy based on longterm success through customized, integrative recovery services to meet this challenge. The goal of NuLife is to aid clients and their loved ones attain and sustain lifelong addiction recovery by providing hope, inspiring recovery and showing them a new life free of addiction. n

A Dash of Herbs and Spices:

Just What the Doctor Ordered?

By Beth Cone Kramer

M

ost of us have a collection of dried spices in the pantry and buy fresh dill or basil at the market for a particular recipe. The more ambitious of us grow herbs in window gardens on the patio. Herbs and spices can add flavor to a dish, but did you know seasonings may also provide health benefits? Your New Year’s resolutions may have included cutting back on sugar, salt and saturated fat. Relying on seasoning to flavor a dish can help you cut back on all of these. In addition, scientific and nutritional research has been uncovering the power of herbs and spices to prevent or slow the advance of cancer, Alzheimer’s and other chronic medical conditions.

Turn your dinner plate into a health benefit with the following seasonings! Boost Your Metabolism with Chili Peppers: Capsaicin, the active component that provides fresh chili, cayenne and chipotle with their kick, can increase your body’s metabolic rate, causing you to burn more calories, and it may also stimulate certain brain chemicals to control your appetite. Are you worried spicy food may cause ulcers? Capsaicin may actually lower your risk by helping stomach cells resist infection caused by ulcer-causing bacteria. Capsaicin also has cardiovascular benefits, keeping LDL (the good cholesterol) from turning into HDL. Soothe Stomach Upset with Ginger: Remember when mom gave you ginger ale to comfort an upset tummy? Ginger extracts can actually reduce nausea from morning sickness, after surgery or from chemotherapy. This spicy seasoning is also chock full of inflammation-fighting compounds, such as gingerol, which some experts believe might have potential to fight some cancers and reduce the effects of osteoarthritis and sore muscles. Stabilize Blood Sugar with Cinnamon: Several studies conclude that adding up to a teaspoon of cinnamon in capsule form to your daily diet might lower post-meal blood sugar spikes in those with type 2 diabetes.

114 Calabasas Style

Reduce Inflammation with Tumeric: The goldenrod-hued spice used in Indian and Middle Eastern fare may help wounds heal when applied as a paste. Brewed into a tea, turmeric may relieve colds and respiratory problems. Medical studies confirm the benefits of curcumin, a compound in turmeric, which has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin may also relieve pain associated with arthritis, injuries and dental procedures. Currently, scientists are studying its potential for managing cardiovascular disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Lift Your Mood with Saffron: This precious golden spice has a history of use in traditional Persian medicine as a mood booster, typically steeped into a tea or used to season rice. Saffron may also help relieve PMS symptoms and depression. Protect Breast Health with Parsley: This green herb, commonly used as a garnish, may inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells and boost resistance to developing malignant tumors. Soothe a Sore Throat with Sage: Sip sage tea to settle an upset stomach or relieve a sore throat. One study supports spraying a sore throat with a sage solution to provide pain relief. Preliminary research seems to suggest that sage may lessen some symptoms associated with early Alzheimer’s by preventing a key enzyme from destroying acetylcholine, a brain chemical involved in memory and learning. Sharpen Focus with Rosemary: When mists of rosemary oil were piped into a workspace, study subjects performed better on memory and alertness tests. Rosmarinic acid and other antioxidant compounds in the herb may fight bacteria and prevent meat spoilage, explaining its popularity as a marinade ingredient. Review any health regimen with your physician before trying at home.

ince 2001, the professional staff at Family Psychiatry & Counseling has been treating a variety of psychiatric and psychological issues, with accurate diagnosis and expert treatment at the cornerstone of the practice. Medical Director, Sabira Saifuddin, MD, is a board certified general, child and adolescent psychiatrist, as well as a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. The practice’s therapists and counselors all hold masters’ degrees in psychology and sociology with an emphasis on cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, relationship counseling, conflict resolution, behavior and stress management, social skills training and life coaching. The professional staff at Family Psychiatry & Counseling sees patients as unique individuals with unique sets of problems that the professionals address through a variety of methods, says Dr. Saifuddin. At the main office in Westlake Village and the satellite offices, the practice offers an outpatient mental health clinic and counseling; psychiatric evaluation and treatment; psychological testing; family and couples counseling; child behavior therapy; specialized testing, including brain chemistry and nutritional testing; and alternative and conventional medical treatments. The practice addresses a wide range of issues, including ADD and ADHD in adults and children, anxiety and depressive disorders, bipolar disorder type 1 and type 2, as well as milder forms of cyclic mood conditions, substance abuse (outpatient treatment), addiction and dual diagnosis, autism, developmental delays and related disorders. Additional conditions addressed include anger management, fibromyalgia, sleep problems, fatigue and eating disorders. Abnormalities in brain chemicals may be behind mental and emotional issues experienced by individuals, shares Dr. Saifuddin. The Westlake Village office offers neurotransmitter testing to analyze brain chemistry. Dr. Saifuddin adds, “Brain chemical abnormalities can be caused by genetic factors, environment, trauma, medications, substance abuse or phase of life, such as menopause or aging.” Hormone imbalance may also impact certain conditions. In addition to brain chemistry analysis, the office offers testing of cortisol, thyroid hormones and other hormones. Inadequate levels of cortisol, the body’s stress hormone produced by the adrenal glands, may lead to poor stress tolerance, fatigue, low energy and sugar cravings. Thyroid hormone deficiency can mimic symptoms of depression and anxiety, causing fatigue, weight gain and sleep difficulties, as well. Patients may be concerned about possible side effects from ongoing medication. Family Psychiatry & Counseling monitors patients while they are under treatment through blood tests to check cholesterol, blood sugar, white blood cell count, liver enzymes and kidney function. For families with children, teens and developmentally delayed adults who may have emotional, behavioral, learning or developmental issues, Family Psychiatry & Counseling offers extra support through in-home behavior services at the patient’s home, school site or elsewhere. Behavior therapists work to reduce dysfunctional behaviors, whether aggression, defiance, impulse control, disruptive behaviors, boundary issues or unsafe acting out. Through activities in the home and elsewhere, specialists help patients reach their goals through a commitment to friendship, respect and sensitivity to each child’s individuality, as well as culture. n

In Pilates, one size does not fit all. Teaching Pilates effectively for different body types is corrective exercise. A Classical Pilates teacher’s main task is to utilize the profoundly valuable exercises and equipment Joseph Pilates designed to help people achieve optimal health. Classical Pilates is a complete, integrated, organic form utilizing a classical repertoire to ‘uniformly develop’ the body so it can move with ultimate efficiency and effectiveness, enabling detoxification and reoxygenation through unhindered circulation. Joseph Pilates designed every movement to involve and powerfully connect the ‘whole body’ to and from its center. Pilates exercises are uniquely designed to tone and strengthen the breathing mechanism. They enable the free distribution of oxygen throughout the entire body, cleansing and reviving it like an “internal shower.” As Joseph Pilates affirmed – “Breathing is the first act of life, and the last. Above all, learn how to breathe correctly!” After all, your life – and health – depends on it. Teague Pilates is committed to the preservation of the original method as taught by Mr. Pilates. Director of Teacher Training, Cathie Teague, is a third generation teacher with 15 years of teaching Pilates professionals. For information call 818.991.9405.

IMAGINE FESTIVAL Setting up camp at Peter Strauss Ranch in Malibu, Imagine Festival was a nonprofit event of yoga, meditation, live music, art and shopping through the eclectic vendor village all in honor of Unlikely Heroes. As local and distanttraveled supporters wandered through the meadow, they were welcomed to take in the day’s magic with a few sun salutations during the morning Mindful Yoga Class before shaking off their sandals to the acoustic sounds of local bands and contemporary beats of live DJ sets. Festival goers took in the ultimate bohemian experience as they indulged in henna body painting and flower-crown making. 100% of the proceeds from Imagine Festival were donated to Unlikely Heroes: an LA-based nonprofit with a global reach committed to rescuing and rehabilitating young women whom have been victimized by sex trafficking. Ask the

Pharmacist Q A

How can I tell if I have a cold or the flu and is there anything I can do to prevent them?

The flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses with similar symptoms, but they are caused by different viruses so there are differences. In general, the flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms, such as fever, body aches, headaches, extreme tiredness and dry cough, are more common and intense. The flu has a sudden onset, while colds come on more slowly. With the flu, body aches and fatigue can be so severe that people often say they feel as if they have been run over by a truck. A stuffy nose, sore throat and sneezing can appear with both the flu and a cold but are much more common with a cold. Of course, you could always have a cold and the flu at the same time and be completely miserable.

So, now, let’s talk about how to try to prevent them. First of all, if you haven’t received a flu shot, get one; it is not too late! Secondly, wash your hands. Cold and flu viruses can live for hours on surfaces, so wash your hands often. If you can’t get to a sink, use a hand sanitizer that has alcohol in it. To prevent infecting others, cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow, not your hand. Do not touch your face. Cold and flu viruses enter your body through your eyes, nose and mouth. Third, get plenty of aerobic exercise and sleep. Aerobic exercise is any activity that gets your heart pumping. It helps increase your body’s natural virus-killing cells. The relationship between lack of sleep and your immune system is not as simple. The immune system is pretty complex. It is made up of several types of cells and proteins that are charged with keeping foreign invaders, such as colds or the flu, at bay. In simple terms, sleep deprivation suppresses immune system function. There are also many supplements and vitamins to boost your immune system, including good old vitamin C and zinc (in lozenge form). Helpful herbs include echinacea, ginseng and garlic. Finally, there’s evidence that your immune system revs up when you destress, so relax. n

he Lamborghini Huracán Spyder, Lamborghini’s newest topless example was just released. Lamborghini aficionados and car enthusiasts all over the state could not wait to see the example in person. Everybody was holding their breath to see how the Spyder would look in person. Lamborghini North Los Angeles threw an incredible “launch party” for the new Huracán Spyder. The dealership was transformed into a night club with an Italian theme. Prosecco and Italianinspired hors d’oeuvres were served, and the parking lot looked more like a Lamborghini factory than anything else. Littered outside was just about every example of Lamborghini. A kaleidoscope of colors and a roar of V12 and V8 motors were music to the ears of everyone in attendance. As the guests took turns sitting in the Huracán Sypder and hundreds of pictures were being taken, we all waited to hear the V10 roar to life and see how the top opens. As the car roared to life, the crowd broke into applause, and we saw that the top is all about speed. In fact, the electric, hydraulic, cloth soft top opens in seventeen seconds — incredible! The new Spyder is already on order and the allocations are going fast. If you are in the market for a new exotic, this might just be the car for you. Lamborghini has truly outdone itself. n

Winning in Business “The problem with winning the rat race is you’re still a rat”

~ Lily Tomlin

When it comes to business, none of us likes to lose; we all want to be winners. But what, exactly, does winning mean? What if we decide to change the rules or the way we compete? Does this automatically make us a loser? Maybe it’s time to get rid of the idea that business is a kind of race. What if, instead, we saw business as a kind of dance, where the idea isn’t to win but to learn new moves, execute them gracefully and, above all, enjoy ourselves? Competing with ourselves is healthier than competing with others. Can we do better today than we did yesterday? Can we do even better tomorrow? There is no losing when we compete against ourselves. When it comes to evaluating your business — what’s working and what’s not — feeling obligated to accept someone else’s definition of winning only gets you trapped. Breaking away from the status quo requires a great deal of courage and requires you to accept change when it’s time and needed. Winning is about maintaining integrity, respect for others, optimism and compassion for your business and the clients you serve. Events experienced in the world or in our work life may make us want to scream and wail but we don’t do either of those things. Instead, we stand tall, look straight ahead, carry out what’s best for our business future and try to restore normality to what feels like chaos. That’s winning! Make an appointment with our qualified staff to meet with us in Old Town. The Calabasas Chamber of Commerce’s primary aim is to support business growth and stability. We provide helpful information and coaching for your business. The chamber offers business counseling, networking, marketing and advertising support and business workshops.

Retirement Plan

Essential Elements

By Mark Wendell

U

ntil recently, many retirees have been able to rely upon the three-legged stool of retirement income sources: a defined benefit pension plan that guarantees a lifetime income, their own savings and Social Security. More recently, however, the first leg of the stool has all but disappeared, as many defined benefit pension plans have been replaced with defined contribution plans, such as a 401(k) plan. In addition, many beneficiaries of pension plans have preferred to manage their own retirement accounts outside of company pension plans by moving their pension balances into IRA rollover accounts when they retire. This has shifted the responsibility for creating a retirement income source to the individual. With expanding life spans and increasing retirement costs, serious retirement planning is required to ensure that income lasts a lifetime. Here are the four essential elements of a sound retirement plan:

• Will your investment assets become de pleted within your lifetime? • Have you thoroughly investigated your Social Security and Medicare benefits?

plan that diversifies investments and/or strategies is usually best left to professionals, since changing economic conditions requires constant vigilance and occasional adjustments.

Calculate Your Retirement Costs

Tax Planning

Set Clearly Defined and Realistic Goals

Long-Term Investment Strategy

With an increasing life expectancy, it’s no longer enough to state, “I want to retire at age XX,” as a goal. In order to inspire a wellconceived plan and the will to faithfully execute it, you need a clear vision of your life in retirement.

Accumulating enough capital to provide lifetime income sufficiency is a daunting task, made more difficult in an environment of low returns on savings and increased stock and bond market volatility. It requires a serious commitment to a long-term investment strategy with the confidence and discipline to follow it. It starts with a well-defined investment objective, which can be stated as the long-term return on investments that must be achieved to meet your cash flow needs.

• Do you plan to actually retire or will you work in some other field? • How will you live in retirement and where will you live? • What would you like to accomplish in this phase of your life? • Have you defined a realistic monthly budget, income vs. expenses? • Will your monthly income sources support your budget?

154 Calabasas Style

One of the more popular rules of the past suggested that retirees will need just 70 percent to 80 percent of their pre-retirement income to maintain their standard of living. Now, the realistic number is 100 percent. The major flaw in the old rule is that it didn’t account for the true cost of aging. In calculating the cost of retirement, the equation has become more difficult due to the new reality of expanding life spans, which means you can plan on higher health care costs over time. The cost of your retirement must factor in realistic spending assumptions based on your goals, desired lifestyle AND increasing health care costs as a percentage of your annual budget throughout your retirement lifetime.

The next step is to develop a risk profile that matches your tolerance for risk and volatility with a portfolio of investments that can reasonably be expected to achieve your objective. Developing and optimizing an asset allocation

For decades, we have been told that the best way to accumulate capital for retirement is through tax-deferred savings vehicles, such as a 403(b), 401(k) plan or various IRA plans. Although it still makes sense for accumulating capital, it doesn’t take into account the tax consequences of income withdrawals and the impact on the total spendable income available in retirement. Retirement planning used to be almost entirely about capital accumulation; however, in view of the possibility of living 30 to 60 years in retirement with increasing health care costs, the emphasis shifts to managing your income during retirement. Professionals should be consulted prior to and during retirement to be certain that your tax situation is being optimized in your specific household situation. n Copyright © Mark Wendell 2015. ts e e tr S e th s it H r a rc e p u S w e n A 75LT The McLaren 6

By Dustin Troyan Photography by McLaren

T

he “LT,” otherwise known as the “Longtail,” was inspired by the 1997 F1 GT car. The 2016 675LT is all about pure performance. The 675LT offers carbon fibre bodywork that increases downformance by 40% over any other model in the Super Series. It’s an exercise in race car technology for the road and is possibly one of the most advanced and race-inspired vehicles available today! The 675LT is a step up from the 650S series, which I have driven. I put about 200 miles on a 2015 650S and was blown away by the performance, comfort, technology and comfort. In a nutshell, if you could buy one, go buy it. The car is simply radical. The 675LT is what I would consider the race car version of the 650S. That, in and of itself, is incredible as the 650S is fast — greased-lightning fast. The 675 has the same twin-turbocharged, 3.8-liter V8, but it has been tuned a bit more and offers an additional 25 horsepower and 16 lb-ft of torque. Boasting a demonic 666 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, the McLaren 675LT goes from standing to 62 mph in under three seconds. With a top speed of just over 205 mph, the 675LT has raised the bar. What the Stradale or Scuderia is to Ferrari, the 675LT is to McLaren. A strippeddown road car that is track prepped. With a focus on weight savings and horsepower, McLaren updated about 30% of the parts to achieve their performance goals. The 675 ends up being about 220 pounds lighter than the 650S. This was achieved with a redesigned exhaust, more carbon fiber and a plastic rear window, making it race ready! Being a limited-edition supercar, the odds are that the price will go up. The F1, P1 and P1 GTR are ultra-rare McLarens and have increased in value exponentially. Rumor has it that when the P1 was on order, those who had deposits on cars were offered a million dollars over what they paid. Wow! And if the F1 is any example of the future value, well, this might be a car to get, put some miles on and keep for posterity. n

GPM GENERAL PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT With all of the talk about our drought leading into the expected El Nino, thoughts are turning toward property maintenance and the potential need for post-apocolyptic repair as Californians go through an unchartered time in history. If you have deferred maintenance...2016 is the year you’ll be paying for it. Your streets are the welcome mat to your community. Your community is being judged by potential buyers, who may find streets in poor condition a reflection of your community’s management and financial stability. GPM, General Pavement Management, is a well known name in the hoa industry and associations quickly refer out to Gordon and his team to please members of their communities. Appealing to a broad spectrum, GPM takes pride in providing special services for higher end developments, such as Lake Sherwood, Bridgehaven and Country Club Estates. A concierge service of note is offered via high end transportation of homeowners to and from their home with the use of golf carts to alleviate any disruption during the paving and sealcoating processes. Gordon Miller, President of GPM, is modest when asked about his reputation as ‘Sealcoater to the stars’. Instead he mentions “Our company was founded on the principals of honesty, dependability, and client support.” With that, GPM has been a proven leader in pavement construction and maintenance for a quarter century. Remember, El Niño is coming. Get ready by clearing drain lines, rain gutters and slope drains of debris, and ensuring that your roofer is on hand and prepared to jump in if leaks appear. Also be prepared for the aftermath with a pavement rejuvenation plan. It is likely that your common area streets will take a considerable toll from El Niño. GPM is the proven leader in asphalt and concrete pavement management, from project planning to completion. You can trust GPM to treat your residents with the care they expect and deserve. n
