A NOTE FROM THE

editor

“Change is the hardest at the beginning, the messiest in the middle, and the best at the end.”

— Robin S. Sharma

Most of us are happy in our comfort zones. Stepping beyond that, experiencing the unknown, becomes challenging. But if we force ourselves out of our safe, happy places to experience new things, new opportunities, new beginnings, we grow in ways we could’ve never imagined. I think the onset of COVID forced many of us off the hamster wheel of life and shifted our perspectives. While we endured hardships, we also learned to enjoy and embrace what had been right in front of us all along. We took the time to experience new hobbies, interests, and things we kept putting off till “someday.” So, we learned that “someday” is the day we choose to take the initiative to move forward, out of our comfort zones. Now that we are more than halfway through the year, I suggest we all take self-inventories. If we have yet to check off something on our “someday” lists, it’s time to get going. This issue is about beauty—all types of beauty. Beauty continues to evolve, reshaping our concepts with the ever-changing times. To help us navigate new trends and find ways to express our personal ideas of beauty, we are showcasing some of the top beauty professionals in the industry. On the cover, we introduce the Chanana family, headed by an inter national filmmaker and a for mer Bollywood actress and model. Together with their two children, the Chananas aspire to make the world a more creative place.

THE Event: Rock the District Old Town Calabasas was the place to be on Saturday, June 4th, as supporters of Las Virgenes Unified School District gathered at the Sagebrush Cantina for the long-awaited return of THE Event: Rock the District. Hosted by Adam Freeman, the fundraiser featured a special performance by Calabasas High School a cappella group, Unstrumental, and guests danced the night away to top hits from 90s Nation. The party of the summer boasted fabulous catered cuisine and endless drinks, while attendees enjoyed lawn games, including cornhole and oversized Jenga. A silent auction rounded out the evening, allowing guests to bid on amazing, one-of-a-kind items. Sponsors included The City of Calabasas, The Agency, Synergy Academics, and The Commons at Calabasas. The event would not have been possible without the tireless effort of The Foundation board members, including Vice President Monica Parmar. The Foundation is a nonprofit parent-volunteer organization that works to ensure all children receive the strongest education possible. For more information, visit thefoundationlvs.org.

THE OAKS WELCOMES NEW FARMERS MARKET

____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Linda Perry Residents of The Oaks of Calabasas celebrated the grand opening of their new farmers market on Wednesday, May 4th. The Oaks is one of the most prestigious communities in Calabasas, with 557 homes. The residents and newly elected homeowners’ board wanted their own farmers market to bring neighbors together while supporting local farmers and small businesses. Jennifer Pafiti, Ashlee Nik, Natalie Morris, Emil Hartoonian, and Dean Griffith were the board’s driving forces in making the market a reality. Through extensive meetings, research, and planning, the board was able to satisfy a long list of requirements and obtain the necessary permits. The City of Calabasas Planning Department and Mayor Mary Sue Mauer also provided exceptional guidance. “The Oaks is truly a landmark destination for our city,” noted Emil Hartoonian. “A community-centric farmers market with activities for kids is part of the hallmark of what makes The Oaks a truly genuine place to call home.”

THE

CHANANA FAMILY Shining a light of positivity across the globe By Lori Berezin Photography by Marvin Steindler

———— International filmmaker Aashish Chanana; his wife, Anju, a former Bollywood actress and model; and their two children, daughter Muskaan and son Aryaman, aspire to make the world a better place with their creativity. After relocating from Mumbai, India, to Calabasas more than a decade ago, the family fell in love with the area’s vibe. “We cherish the mountains, the beautiful sunsets, the Commons…everything,” says Anju. “We bought our home in Vista Pointe, Calabasas, in 2010, after two years of house hunting. As soon as we walked into the house, we knew this could be our home. We truly appreciate the views, clean lines, Zen look, contemporary and unique architecture, and attention to detail that went into designing this house.” Anju currently channels her creativity into yoga, meditation, painting, designing, and crafting jewelry. She has also sketched and designed her own clothes since fourth grade. After her second child, Aryaman, was born, she decided to follow her passion for fashion design. “I started modeling in high school and acting in movies while in college,” explains Anju. “I began early and gave it up early, too. I was way too young to realize the struggle others had to go through, as work came easily to me. No regrets. I’d never have met my wonderful husband if not for movies. Ash signed me for his first directorial venture and the rest is history.” With over 20 years of experience in the film industry, Aashish is CEO of the international film production and visual effects studio Media Factory International, with offices in Vancouver, Canada, and Mumbai, India. In 2009, desiring a base in California, the Chananas initially moved to Napa Valley, where they had family, before relocating to Los Angeles to be closer to the film industry. An award-winning film director, Aashish believes that powerful films bring awareness of important stories in our world, contributing towards positive change. One of the few film directors who has won over 100 awards and nominations from across the globe, his recent films, Afreen (on anti-terrorism) and Emily (about human trafficking), shed light on extremely dark subjects. His newest film, Obsessions, combines love, passion, and thrills with his flamboyant style—using beautiful, breathtaking visuals. Artistic sensibilities clearly run in the family. Daughter Muskaan’s talents include painting, which she adores. She presently works as a hair and make-up artist in Mumbai, bringing such international brands as Smashbox and GLAMGLOW to India. “I grew up around movies, watching them and

CHANANA FAMILY spending time at my dad’s opulent studios,” says Muskaan. “Feeling proud of my mom and dad’s hard work and achievements inspired me in so many ways. Growing up, I really loved to dress up, like most girls my age…that lasted through my teenage years. I soon realized how much I enjoyed making a difference in the world. Makeup enabled me to express myself, and I wanted to help others feel the same way. Plus, my mom’s a great painter, which inspires me. In many ways, makeup is a lot like painting.” Muskaan hopes to break into the film industry as a makeup artist, following in her mom’s footsteps in Bollywood. She currently does bridal makeup and assists photographers at fashion shoots. Muskaan’s younger brother, Calabasas High School graduate Aryaman, aka ‘Ace’, loves creating music. “I hear my dad tell his friends that I make music 40 hours a day,” says Aryaman. “Honestly, I wish days were longer, and I could really do that. I think what’s different in my music is the ‘diversity’ I bring in my compositions. I’m very fortunate to have traveled the world at such a young age. Those experiences help me bring multiple colors into my music palette. Everyone in my family is an artist in one way or another. My sister does makeup. Dad’s an awesome filmmaker. My beautiful mom is an artist, a yoga instructor, and a jewelry designer—all rolled into one—and the best chef ever!” Originally from India, the Chanana family lived at the heart of Bollywood where they were deeply involved in the Indian film industry. Aashish’s father, a professor at Harvard and MIT, with a PhD in economics, served as a cabinet minister in the Indian government. While in high school, Aashish designed India’s first electric car and was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal from the country’s President. Although he was offered scholarships from Columbia University in New York, Loughborough in London, and Toyota in Japan for automobile engineering, his passion for filmmaking drove him in another direction. The family still finds time to travel. They especially enjoyed a recent road trip to the Canadian Rockies, including Lake Louise and Banff. “We found it absolutely spectacular,” says Anju. “We didn’t want to leave Western Canada completely so we bought a beautiful home in Vancouver where we get to spend a few months every year. The province of British Columbia is stunning and one of the best places on earth for those who relish nature as much as we do.” They also enjoy spending quality time together in Calabasas, like going to the gym or for a swim. Aryaman also runs and works out regularly. “We love heading to The Landing to soak up a little sun on the patio while overlooking the lake at Westlake Village,” notes Aashish. “Aryaman loves the sushi, so we go there all the time. Another favorite of ours is Thai food at The Palms on Hollywood Boulevard.” The Chanana family continues to nourish the world through their creativity. We look forward to seeing what this talented clan cooks up next. @ada.artsntrends @anjuchanana | @aashish_chanana | aashishchanana.com n 46

Cars and Coffee with the TMPCC

By Dustin Troyan Photographed by Sean-Michael Connor, Ken Latka, and Scott Martin The Television Motion Picture Car Club (TMPCC) was honored to be the first organization to host a private “Cars and Coffee” event at Lavaggio, “The Art of Auto Detailing,” in Agoura Hills, kicking off the summer season. Cars and Coffee is a term that the car community uses to denote a casual gathering for car aficionados to share their cool cars and chat over a cup of coffee. This event held at Lavaggio in Agoura Hills was sponsored by Tony Fiori and his team at Vista Ford Lincoln of Oxnard. The magic of the event was not only the amazing cars but, of course, the club members who attended from all over Southern California. On display were some truly incredible cars and trucks from the 60s and 70s, classic hot rods, and European exotic cars, as well as modern muscle cars. Club members enjoyed fresh coffee, bagels, and donuts as they enjoyed each other’s cars and camaraderie. It was a long-overdue event and was truly a wonderful time for everyone in attendance. One of the favorite cars on display is owned by Doug Yick. His classic 1968 Mustang Fastback was purchased by his parents and has been in the family ever since. Going under a complete restoration, updating the wheels, and repainting it to the factory color, Acapulco blue, this four-speed Mustang was a huge hit and truly a timeless example of a classic muscle car. The Television Motion Picture Car Club is the world’s only entertainment-industry car club for those who work in, have worked in, or are affiliated with the television, motion picture, music, radio, sports, and motorsports industries. To learn more or if you are interested in joining, visit their website at TMPCC.org. n 52

What is "Calabasas" Style?

By Irene Marshall

C

an you still be stylish while being casual? Absolutely! Nowadays, it’s a mostly casual world. Blues, whites, and blacks are emerging as popular summer hues, while neutral tones remain on-trend for another season. Hats are always popular summer accessories. Besides providing sun protection, they give any outfit personality. A signature purse, belt, or sandals add the perfect finishing touch to any outfit. Accessories are important and take your look to the next level. Fun summer dresses are always a stylish wardrobe staple, and retro styles, like flare-legged pants and high-waisted trousers, are timeless options that are here to stay. Also, men are stepping up their everyday looks with striped pants or by adding tailored jackets over basic tees.

"

Beauty comes from within” is an adage we have all heard. As a beauty expert, I spend my days discussing concerns about appearances and addressing them with various devices and injectables. I’ve treated men and women from all over the country, and I am here to tell you that beauty definitely comes from within. Yes, we can reduce wrinkles and enhance lips. We can clear up a whole host of skin concerns. But at the heart of it is the confidence, the smile, the zest for life, and the vibrant health radiating from within that makes a person truly beautiful. In this article, I will discuss some strategies for harnessing the mind-body-beauty connection.

Sleep Hygiene Celebrities often cite sleeping and drinking lots of water as their secret to beauty. It is true that eight hours a night of good, consistent sleep is ideal and allows for the regenerative process of the skin to be optimized. Regeneration of all of the body’s cells is thought to occur during the night. We all know how difficult it can be to get uninterrupted sleep. We cannot always control our worries, but we can attempt to stack the odds in our favor as much as possible. Good sleep hygiene means that we limit caffeine to the morning hours, wind down in the evening with minimal screen time just before bed, steady temperature and humidity control in our bedrooms, and take melatonin sleep supplements. Sheets that wick away moisture and low ambient light—perhaps a motion sensor night light instead of one that stays on— are hacks for uninterrupted sleep.

Stress Management High cortisol levels and stress make every skin condition worse. And going into prolonged “emergency mode” due to high stress or illness puts our bodies on reserve mode. In that state, the body reduces keratin production and shunts resources to vital organs. This means that skin and hair cell turnover, i.e., hair growth and skin renewal, are reduced. Similar to good sleep, stress management is an enigma for many. Besides trying to put things in perspective, the strategies my patients have found helpful are yoga, meditation, counseling, acupuncture, and

Reiki healing. Indeed, relaxation while tapping into the spiritual aspects of our nature is helpful in reducing stress.

Joyful Pursuits The world is opening up (on and off), and it’s time to get back to socializing. Studies show that centenarians often live longer because they have a rich social network. They laugh, support each other, play games, and dine together. This is an important aspect of life that has been hindered lately. It is best to make a standing “date” with friends so that something is on the social calendar when you get to the end of your week. Remember that these social gatherings don’t have to be large, fancy, or involve excess drinking. Fun is free and safe and available to you now!

Limit Limiting Beliefs If you love to sing, sing! If you love to dance, do so! There is an epidemic of limiting beliefs with ideas such as “I’m too old to start now” and “I’m not good at that.” It doesn’t really matter whether or not you are a professional at something you enjoy. Whether it be dancing, singing, gardening, or sewing, you should do it if it makes you happy. After all, a smile on your face makes you beautiful.

Exercise Exercise increases stamina and blood flow to the brain and organs. It flushes the body through sweating and releases endorphins for a feeling of well-being. The benefits of exercise are innumerable. Exercise can be walking and talking, tennis, yoga, intense cardio, or dancing. It can be structured or unstructured body movement, but it should be done consistently. Yoga has the benefit of increasing flexibility, balance, and muscle strength—all while reducing stress. I personally love yoga the best.

Learning a New Skill It is therapeutic to learn a new skill. How do you make wine? Can you learn the cross-stitch? Have you ever gone wakesurfing? Do you know how to use your iPhone to take professional photos? Can you read tarot cards? Can you bake sourdough bread? The world is full of wonders waiting for you to explore. If you are in a rut, find a sweet new hobby and try to refine it. In the process, you will be stimulating and renewing brain cells and gaining precious life moments.

Self-care Self-care can be a slippery slope when you don’t feel good. This is when consistency is key. Don’t think; just do. If you neglect yourself, you will find yourself feeling worse and worse. Things become chaotic and out of control. Rather than deciding to do your morning and evening regimens, just do them automatically at the same time as you brush your teeth. Active ingredients in products are important, but the aspect of valuing yourself enough to do selfcare is key. If the external form is not radiating beauty from within, we are looking at a veneer or a shell that can only sustain attention temporarily. I have seen firsthand what stress and illness can do to the skin. We have all noticed the fouryear transformation of practically every president in office: Time-zone changes, sleep disturbance, stress, and extreme responsibility can accelerate aging. Hopefully, some of the strategies I mentioned here are helpful to you—for your mind-body-beauty connection. The statements in this article are for general informational purposes only and do not substitute for individual medical advice.

Massage Massage and body treatments increase blood flow to the skin and create an opportunity for deep relaxation. It is at the times when we are most stressed that we “need” a massage, and yet, that is the time when we are least likely to schedule one. It’s important during highstress times to carve out that hour or two to get a reset. Calabasas Style 75

ALLEN EDWARDS: Change Your Hair, Change Your

C

Life

redited with creating the iconic “Farrah Fawcett Flip,” stylist to the stars Allen Edwards continues to transform clients’ looks at his Woodland Hills salon.

During the mid-70s, when Edwards saw Farrah Fawcett on television pre-Charlie’s Angels, he thought, "I’d really love to style her hair.” Farrah’s friend Jane Brolin, married at the time to actor James Brolin and already a client of Edwards, brought Farrah into his salon. “Back then, long hair wasn’t that popular,” says Edwards. “There was very little layering to Farrah’s long, blonde hair. I basically fashioned the first long-layered look, which remains popular to this day.” Creating hairstyles for such celebrities as Donna Mills, Rene Russo, Anne Bancroft, Diane Keaton, and Raquel Welch, Edwards became one of the most sought-after stylists around. He also produced hundreds of makeovers on television shows, including Regis, Leeza Gibbons, and Oprah. He even gave O.J. Simpson’s prosecutor, Marsha Clarke, a whole new look. After five decades, Edwards still loves changing lives and helping non-celebrities shine like stars. Master the Art of

merely skin deep, inner beauty allows your soul to shine through. Traits such as honesty,

compassion, and generosity help you glow from within. Happiness comes and goes, but acceptance of life’s ups and downs brings a deeper sense of joy. Inner beauty doesn’t fade with age. In fact, it usually grows. It does, however, take some work. Get plenty of rest, eat healthy foods, practice yoga and mindfulness, and find joy in life’s simple pleasures. Seek that delicate balance between feeding your hunger and feeding your soul. Play music instead of watching the nightly news. Skip that sugary snack and stretch. Exercise more, not just to improve your body but to enjoy those feel-good endorphins. And “sleep, perchance to dream.” It is the balm that holds body and soul together. There’s nothing more attractive than those who are comfortable in their own skin. Exuding a quiet, steady confidence can be incredibly appealing. Nurture

simply feel better and so will those around you. Pay it forward and express your inner beauty. Engage in activities that ignite creativity in yourself and others. Perhaps the best thing you can do is learn to forgive yourself and those around you for not living up to all those beautiful expectations. n 88

WHAT’S NEW IN FAT-TRANSFER BREAST AUGMENTATION

DOWNSIZING F

or many, breast augmentation can be a life-changing procedure. It can restore volume, symmetry, and general aesthetic quality to the breasts, as well as a profound sense of confidence. As one of the leading board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeons in Los Angeles, Dr. Andrew T. Cohen has performed thousands of

breast augmentations with beautiful and long-lasting results. That said, some women eventually choose to get rid of their implants for a variety of reasons. One of the most common reasons is that many women who received breast implants in their 20s and 30s simply don’t want to live with foreign material in their bodies, while still wanting to look and feel beautiful about their breasts. These patients can benefit from a new and highly effective procedure known as “downsizing,” using fat-transfer breast augmentation. Dr. Cohen has developed a unique way of harvesting and injecting fat using the PureGraft system. The result is restored volume using one’s own harvested fat cells and breast augmentation without a foreign body. The downsizing procedure begins by safely removing the saline or silicone breast implant, as well as any scar tissue that may have developed over the years. In some cases, Dr. Cohen then per for ms a natural breast lift to reduce any sagging skin. The breast augmentation PureGraft system is per for med at the same time, where excess unwanted fat from one region of the body is extracted, washed, and injected into the breasts to achieve the desired size and shape. Making Sense of Beauty in the 21st Century By Lori Berezin

O

ur senses perceive beauty in many ways, from the visual to the aural. While beauty may indeed be in the eye of the beholder, it also relies on certain cultural norms, dependent on one’s location and the time period.

Fortunately, what constitutes beauty continues to evolve in our country. From the color of our hair to the color of our makeup, our concept of beauty is clearly changing with the times. During the 60s, Twiggy-thin was in. Centuries ago, Botticelli voluptuousness was the norm. These days, if you asked 10 different people around the world what they find beautiful, you’d probably receive as many different responses.

Pure beauty Is there such a thing as pure beauty? We all find sunsets beautiful. Even birds and other beasts love to watch the skies light up as the sun goes down. There is something universally appealing about a clear blue sky or garden full of color ful flowers. We’re often overcome with emotion in the face of natural beauty, from lovely English gardens to the endless flow of turquoise waves caressing the sand. Beauty calms us and excites us all at once.

Beauty’s initial glance We first find beauty in our parents’ eyes. We look for it later in our partners. If we’re fortunate, we discover beauty is so much more than skin deep. Even a voice can be beautiful. Often, we seek out sights and sounds that remind us of our family, the ones we loved first. That’s partly why beauty is so subjective. What one person perceives as flawless may appear unappealing to another.

Beautiful self-esteem Feeling beautiful is intricately tied to our self-esteem. Those of us lucky enough to grow up with loving parents who recognized our beauty, inside and out, often developed a healthy dose. It’s never too late to recognize our own, or another’s, beauty. Clearly, we fall in love with those we find beautiful. There’s something so utterly innocent about beauty’s effect on us. Balance is key. Finding the beauty that lies within is equally important. n

bronzer; lightweight, flowy clothing; and a bag to hold all your summer essentials.

• Ask any makeup artist what the best beauty secret is, and they will say sunscreen. It's your best defense against wrinkles, sunspots, and sun damage. Apply it every morning and bring it with you to reapply throughout the day. • A good self-tanner keeps your skin out of excessive, harmful rays and keeps you looking refreshed and sun-kissed with a very natural, even tan. • Always pack a sun hat or baseball hat to protect your face and hair from too much sun exposure. • Bring a flowy skirt or oversized button-down shirt to use as a beach cover up this year. • Pack plenty of healthy snacks and water to keep you hydrated. • Always have a fresh pedicure at the beginning of summer. It’s time to start showing off those pretty feet. • For beach days, get a fun umbrella to give you a break from the sun—at least for part of the day. • Lastly, throw a light sweater in your bag—especially if you tend to get carried away by the beauty of the ocean and want to stay for sunset. n

SQULPT BODY SHAPING:

CHANGING THE PARADIGM OF BODY CONTOURING PROCEDURES

Heather, 47 mother of 3 (left), and Emily, 29, (right) who both had an XL BBL® at Squlpt. Real patients.

T

By Elena Richards here’s a little-known fact that’s about to become huge news, potentially changing the shape and scope of plastic surgery nationwide—and it’s taking place in Agoura Hills. After years of training and practice, aesthetic plastic surgeons Dr. Ryan Spivak

and Dr. Daniel Suissa realized that the world was long overdue for a modernized approach to surgical body contouring. This insight sparked a passion to find a solution to the most common issues with traditional liposuction and augmentation techniques: the antiquated technology and instruments, the increased risks of going under general anesthesia, the potential complications of placing silicone in your body, the scarring, and the unnecessary trauma of a painful and prolonged recovery. This vision gave rise to the Squlpt Body Shaping practice and patent-pending technology SoftSqulpt ™ —a major step forward in body shaping and a breakthrough in awake liposuction

and fat transfers. Yes, you read that right—all of Squlpt’s procedures are per formed awake and comfortably with a proprietary formula of numbing and relaxation medications. What used to be a painful process with a long recovery time is now safer and less painful, allowing a quick bounce back to a regular lifestyle.

MAKE A STATEMENT WITH

Nail A rt

By Irene Marshall

Nail art has becoming increasingly popular over the past few years, and the trends in designs have evolved. Your art aesthetic is personal and subjective, so while there's no color or design that's certified "in" or "out," there are a few fun looks you can try this summer. Not every nail has to have the same design. Dare to be different with unique designs on each nail that all form one cohesive look. Choosing to do an extra design on the “party nail,” or ring finger, is still as trendy as ever. Embellished French manicures give a new twist on a classic look—veer from the norm by adding a line of color under the white tip. Swirls can be done in bright, neutral, or monotone colors. Stripes, diamonds, jewels, charms, polka dots, and marble designs have taken over the nail art game—instead of simple summer flowers. Almost anything goes, so use your creativity and have fun trying something new with your nails. n Source: refinery29.com

THE BEAUTIFUL BENEFITS OF WATER

e bathe in it, wash our faces with it, drink it—and most of us can’t get enough of this magical elixir called water. In our dry L.A. climate, water is even more essential for maintaining our health and beauty.

Water is life

Our skin is our largest organ, and it’s mostly made up of water. We lose water every day and need to replenish it to preserve moisture and ward off dry, flaky skin and unsightly wrinkles. Drink at least 64 ounces each day to slow the aging process and maintain a healthy pH (acid/alkaline) balance, measured from 0, being most acidic, to 14. Your body should remain in the middle at 7 to keep skin glowing.

Heal faster You’ll also heal faster when you drink plenty of H2O. It reduces scarring, flushes out toxins, and increases blood flow for healthier skin.

Listen to your gut Water helps your gut and digestion run smoothly. To mix it up, flavor your water with lemon and other fruits and herbs. Eat foods high in water content, such as low-salt soups and cucumbers. The cucumbers can also be used under your eyes to reduce puffiness. While alcohol ages skin, it’s good to know that consuming bubbly water with lemon concurrently may actually prevent a hangover. Now, that’s something to cheer about. n 106

Have fun with creative

Lips! By Irene Marshall

Statement lips have officially made their grand return. Corals and berries are in for summer, and classic red remains on-trend. Bold red-lip looks have been all over the red carpet lately. Red works for everyone and can be worn day or night. If you’re not sure which shade works best for you, start by narrowing down your skin undertones to help you choose between a warmer- or cooler-toned lip shade. Whether you choose gloss or matte lips, the nude look still has its place. Nude or soft-pink lips should instantly flatter your skin tone and bring your dewy glow to life. For summer, a gloss with a juicy, hydrated, glass-looking appearance is perfect. Texture is also major trend this year. Opt for a touch of subtle lip glitter to decorate your lips. Don’t worry, it’s edible! n Source: marieclaire.com, cosmopolitan.com, goodhousekeeping.com

COUNTY LINE CARS & COFFEE: TWO MONTHLY EVENTS TIE THE KNOT ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Written and photographed by Steve Geldman Starting early in the pandemic, Rob Snyder began hosting his monthly Ranch Car Club, where auto enthusiasts met at The Shoppes at Westlake Village. Meanwhile, Bryan Hanes, Tony D’Amore, and Joe Oliveri hosted their monthly 101 Cars & Coffee on Saturdays, initially meeting in the parking area of Brent’s Deli and later moving to Westlake Autoscape, an exclusive storage facility. Both events were similar and catered to locals with interests in everything from restored Model Ts to late-model Ferraris and everything in-between. The four Conejo Valley gearheads, all friends, decided to merge their two independent events, and County Line Cars & Coffee premiered in January 2022. Prior to this marriage, they also joined forces to host automotive-themed food and toy drives, helping our community in so many ways. County Line Cars & Coffee meets the second Saturday of each month from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the westside parking area of The Shoppes at Westlake Village.

USING FRUIT IN YOUR By Gayle Barnes

Décor

Bring natural freshness to you summer décor in an understated way by adding a touch of fruit. Fruit gives a sense of uniqueness to every space that need not be elaborate or expansive. In fact, the clean and sophisticated approach of modern design demands a simple, elegant look. Creative Arrangements You don't have to limit yourself to flowers in a floral masterpiece—use citrus, such as lemons, limes, or oranges, to create a new take on a classic arrangement. Keep the look light and airy with greenery or add a bright pop of color.

Hanging Citrus Installations We love an installation of hanging fruit—or even florals. If you want to make your own, keep in mind that drying fruit and flowers takes time, so you will want to plan ahead. The arrangements can be hung from a light fixture, over a kitchen window, or even from a pergola.

Fanciful Fruit Adding lemon to your water can be both fun and good for you. Take it to the next level this summer and make it aesthetically pleasing while reaping the health benefits. Lemon contains vitamin C which is known to increase the amount of collagen your body produces and increase your skin’s elasticity.

Pineapple Bowl Here’s a new spin on the classic fruit bowl! Instead of throwing away the rind, make a pineapple bowl or boat carved from fresh pineapples to hold desserts, like gelato, or more fresh fruit. Something similar can also be created using melons.

Ask the

Pharmacist I have started to monitor my blood pressure at home. Why are the readings so inconsistent? Are they accurate?

T

here are many different blood-pressure monitors available. When selecting a monitor, there are a few things to look for. Make sure to choose one that is validated, as well as automatic or electronic. In

addition, look for one that includes a cuff to be placed on the upper arm—instead of the wrist or finger. Lower-arm or wrist cuffs can be difficult to use correctly. Make sure the cuff properly fits your arm. Measure your upper arm to find the correct size. Be sure to place the cuff on your skin rather than over your clothes. Before taking your reading, try to relax. Sit down and rest for at least five minutes and empty your bladder before taking a reading. Remain calm and don't speak while measuring your blood pressure. Sit in a chair with your back straight and supported and your feet flat on the ground. Make sure your legs and ankles are uncrossed. Place your arm comfortably on a flat surface at heart level. Don't drink caffeinated or alcoholic beverages, smoke, or exercise 30 minutes before measuring your blood pressure. These activities can affect your blood-pressure levels. It is important to measure your blood pressure at the same time each day—most often twice a day. You can take your blood pressure once in the morning before eating or taking any medications and once again in the evening. Avoid measuring your blood pressure right after you wake up. Keep in mind that blood pressure readings are often a little higher in the morning. When you measure your blood pressure, take two or three separate readings—at least one minute apart. Record all three results. That way, you can take your results to your appointments. Experts recommend checking the accuracy of your monitor. You can do this by taking your home machine to your doctor's office or pharmacy and comparing your machine's readings with those taken there.

EARTH DAY E-WASTE RECYCLING In honor of Earth Day, on April 22nd, at the Calabasas High School visitor parking lot, two local businesswomen hosted a free Earth Day E-Waste event for Calabasas and surrounding communities. Cheri Steelman of Rodeo Realty in Calabasas and Amy Spahr, owner of Junkluggers, put their best foot forward to help local families unload many unwanted electronic items for safe recycling while educating the community about their services and what “e-waste” is. The two-hour event served a constant flow of cars, with the biggest haul delivered by Nurse Fatima Rowhanian of Refresh Med Spa. Gaming consoles, TVs, and old music equipment were some of the items collected throughout the day, and all were grateful for the opportunity to clear out items that had been stored in the garage for too long. Junkluggers, a full-service furniture and junk removal service, was on hand to help load their truck with a focus on donating, recycling, and repurposing as many of the items as possible. 140

SUMMER By Kaylie Carafelli

Reading

Reading is the quintessential summer hobby. Forgo screentime to take your kids to your local library or peruse the aisles of a bookstore to find the perfect summer read. There are plenty of reward programs available where kids can earn prizes—from new books to ice cream treats—as incentives to get them started. You can also create your own bingo card or reading journal and reward your child for a job well done. Head outdoors to read while enjoying a picnic at the park or beach. Get the whole family involved by sharing one chapter a night from a favorite for all ages, like Harry Potter. Audiobooks are a great option for teens interested in learning a new language. Introduce your youngest to Eric Carle’s unforgettable collage illustrations in The Hungry Caterpillar or pick up current top-seller Dragons Love Tacos. Early readers will feel confident in their newfound abilities with the Pete the Cat (My First I Can Read) collection. Easy chapter books like Amelia Bedelia and Captain Underpants are full of laughs for elementary readers, and E.B. White and Roald Dahl bring magic and fantasy to brighten every imagination. When it comes to reading, you really can’t go wrong. n Calabasas Style 155

From tumbling to parkour, there's fun for everyone!

MONARCHS By Lori Berezin Photography by Marvin Steindler

M

GYM

onarchs is a leader in children’s physical fitness instruction, inspiring dynamic kids to lear n, grow, and succeed while having fun— whether lear ning gymnastics, tumbling, cheerleading, participating in camp, or celebrating at a birthday party.

What do you offer for summer? Monarchs offers a fun and inspiring summer program. For ages 3 to 14, we have full- and half-day options in our main gymnastics camp (with an extended half hour for drop-off and two hours of aftercare.) In our parkour gym, we have camps for ages 6 to 8 and 8+ which include three hours of flipping, jumping, climbing, different stations, and lots of fun.

156

Calabasas Style

Is the summer program a flexible schedule? We love giving parents the option to decide on any given day that “today is a Monarchs Camp Day.” It makes planning easy and helps busy parents in a pinch. Also, campers can avoid camp fatigue. It’s really a lifesaver during the summer, and you never lose out on a bought camp day this way.

What is the goal of the Monarchs summer camp? Our motto is to inspire dynamic kids through FUN. Yes, kids do learn a ton and they’re so physically active the entire time, but they would never know that they were learning because we make it outrageously fun for everyone.

What makes Monarchs Gym so special? With 14,000 square feet in each location, it’s hard not to be entertained constantly. Our camp is unique in that the curriculum changes frequently enough during the day that campers remember the schedule and yet are constantly onto something else that’s exciting to them. We just keep the good times rolling.

Do you have any last comments about the program? Whether you want your child to lear n in a curriculum-based class or intensive camp or have some fun at main gym camp, open play, or parents’ night out, Monarchs has such a wide program offering, and we really encourage everyone to try it out and see why everyone chooses us for their gymnastics and tumbling needs. n Monarchs Gymnastics & MonarX Parkour 818.889.3634 monarchsgym.com Calabasas Style 157

BARNEY'S gourmet hamBURGERS B

Delectable Dining Event

arney’s Gourmet Hamburgers hosted a private “Delectable Dining Event” in conjunction with Calabasas Style magazine on May 24th to celebrate the opening of their newest location in The Commons at Calabasas. Local business leaders and members of the Calabasas City Council, including Calabasas Mayor Mary Sue Mauer, gathered to enjoy a lively evening of food and camaraderie.

Owner Albert Sarshar opened his first Barney’s Gourmet Hamburgers in Oakland, California,

in 1978, becoming one of the first burger restaurants to introduce the award-winning concept of gourmet hamburgers. Since then, the company opened four additional locations in the Bay Area, as well as locations in Brentwood and Santa Monica, before opening the latest addition in Calabasas. Since its inception, the family-owned micro-chain has greatly expanded its menu, ensuring everyone who visits can find something they love. Samuel Sarshar—who grew up in the family business and directly oversees the operations of the Southern California Barney’s locations—was on hand to welcome guests to the special event. “While we’re incredibly grateful to continue winning awards, we are most proud of becoming a tradition for the families and friends in the communities we touch,” notes Samuel. 158

Calabasas Style

Barney’s diverse menu begins with “The Classics”—a collection of custom-blend, flame-broiled, 100%-natural chuck beef burger served just the way customers like it, with lettuce, tomato, red onions, pickles, and Thousand Island dressing. For those craving something unique, Barney’s offers 19 different specialty burgers, including house favorites like the Baja Burger, featuring bacon, avocado, jack cheese, and house-made pico de gallo; the Gastropub Burger, with provolone cheese, bacon, a fried egg, and house-made blackened chips on a pretzel bun; and the Chipotle Burger, with house-made chipotle sauce, jack cheese, and sauteed mushrooms. One of Barney’s most popular gourmet burgers, aptly named the Voodoo Burger, is prepared with provolone cheese, blue cheese, and bacon, then topped with mushrooms sautéed in house-made spicy voodoo sauce. For those that aren’t in the mood for a delicious gourmet beef burger, substitutions include turkey, garden, or Beyond meat patties; grilled chicken breast; and wild Alaskan salmon. Every burger or sandwich can be accompanied by a tasty side—like crispy curly fries with house-made ranch, beer-battered onion rings, veggie baskets, and more—to round out the meal. And with an impressive 14 signature salads to choose from, there are sure to be options to tantalize every tastebud. And just how fresh are the salads? Barney’s makes its own dressing for the grilled-vegetable chicken salad and makes its own falafels for the falafel salad, and the beet salad is a hit. Barney’s also proudly serves draft beer and wine in addition to milkshakes and a variety of non-alcoholic beverages. Sample one (or all) of the four specialty Kosher beef hot dogs served on a traditional bun or baguette and exclaim “hot diggity dog!” From birthday parties to corporate meetings, Barney’s Gourmet Hamburgers cherishes the opportunity to cater any special event. Customers can expect top-notch service and only the best, freshest ingredients every time—using 100%-trans-fat-free canola and soybean oils ensures that the quality of each item always exceeds expectations. And every recipe is made in-house with all-natural, hormone- and antibiotic-free beef and chicken. Barney’s believes in great quality food, and to prove it, all produce is delivered farm-to-table daily and thoroughly inspected upon arrival. Customers also enjoy burger delivery and pick-up so Barney’s is available anywhere they go. n

NASHVILLE

Celebrating 166

Calabasas Style

By Lori Berezin Welcome to Nashville—Tennessee’s star-studded capital. Aptly named Music City, creativity flows like whiskey, and most visitors and residents simply go with the flow—starting with downtown Broadway, where the lights shine as brightly as the talent performing in the area’s famed honky-tonks. On your visit, be sure to dine and shop till you drop along one of the city’s most pedestrian-friendly blocks—fun and funky 12th Avenue South. Lush green hills and waterfalls beckon beyond the city limits. Bird watch or fish at lovely Burgess Falls or hike one of the four fabulous falls along River Trail/Service Loop Road. If you’re up for the challenge, climb Jackson County’s charming Cummins Falls. Then, explore the eclectic shops and restaurants—including popular Puckett’s—as well as the Victorian architecture in downtown Franklin, listed on the National Registry of Historical Places, just a stone’s throw from Nashville. Take a guided tour of Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry and stay for a show celebrating country, bluegrass, gospel, or folk. Visit the Johnny Cash Museum and Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Relax a while at Riverfront Park along the Cumberland River. Stroll over to the Liberty Common café at 207 First Avenue for some unique Southern cuisine, such as Nashville Hot Chicken or Southern Fried Pickles. And visit Centennial Park’s Parthenon Museum, a replica of the original, in this delightful cultural mecca and Athens of the South. n
