From our Readers

Calabasas Style Magazine receives many phone calls, emails, Instagram comments, and Facebook posts from our readers. We would like to share some of them with you.

Hello! I just saw your note in the Mar/Apr book. Congrats on taking over. We are recent transplants from West Hollywood. The mag’s focus illuminates life here in a way that the L.A. lifestyle glossies cannot grasp with such a broad target audience. Calabasas Style reminds me of the glory days of “Ocean Drive” (that’s a plus)!

Thank you so much for having the magazines delivered to my home! That was very kind and thoughtful of you. The whole issue is beautiful, and I love the women in business section. I feel truly honored to be featured alongside all these incredible ladies. Thank you for the opportunity.

My family and I love Calabasas Style. We look forward to receiving it in the mail. It sits on our coffee table, and we all read through it time and time again. Great job.

Absolutely love the Woman in Business section every year. Thank you for highlighting the strength of the women in our community!

Every issue I think is better than the one before. Keep up the great work!

I always take a few issues of Calabasas Style with me on my summer vacations to read on the plane and at the beach. It is my way to sit with no interruptions and finally be able to read cover to cover.

Calabasas Style is such a huge asset to our community. Thank you and your team for putting together such a valuable magazine.

VIEWPOINT UPPER SCHOOL PRESENTS GREASE

The stage of Viewpoint’s Carlson Family Theater was a time machine for the weekend of April 21 to 23, transporting a very enthusiastic audience of family and friends back to Rydell High School circa 1959. More than 40 cast and crew members in the Upper School devoted months to creating an unforgettable production of Grease . From the duck-tailed, hot-rodding T-Birds to their gum-snapping, hip-shaking Pink Ladies in bobby sox and pedal pushers, the rollicking musical evoked the look and sound of the 1950s, and the Viewpoint performers embraced it all with an enthusiasm that delighted the audience and lit up the theater. “The exuberant cast took to the characters and music of the era and became a tight-knit ensemble through the process,” Lisa Roskowinski, teacher of Middle and Upper School Theatre and the director, explained. Borhani The Family

Coming Full Circle in Calabasas

When Cristina and Dr. Korosh Borhani first met in sixth grade at A.E. Wright Middle School, they never imagined a future together. They also crossed paths when they attended Calabasas High School, still unaware of the charming life they would eventually create together. Upon graduation, both went their separate ways, following career paths in medicine. Then, in 2016, years after they’d last spoken, Cristina messaged Korosh on Facebook. He replied, suggesting they meet for coffee. After just six months of dating, the couple wasted no time, getting engaged on Valentine’s Day of 2017 on romantic Catalina Island. In November of that year, they purchased their dream house just around the corner from Korosh’s parents, and they tied the knot that December at an intimate ceremony in Napa Valley. Two years ago, Cristina and Korosh welcomed their firstborn son, Bobby, whom they plan to send to preschool at Calabasas Klubhouse next year. Bobby is followed by his precocious brother Enzo, now 10 months old. Two adorable teacup Yorkies, Chewy and Louie, complete this picture-perfect family.

“What first attracted me to Korosh was our familiar childhoods,” explains Cristina. “When I look at him, I see the boy he was growing up in Calabasas and the intelligent man he has become. The qualities I admire most are his respect, loyalty, humility, kindness, and generosity. I am eternally grateful to my parents in heaven, Robert and Elizabeth Shallenberger, who passed away much too soon when I was only a teenager. I truly believe they helped bring my loving husband and his family into my life. I could never ask for more. His parents are now both of our parents and that is the greatest gift he could give me. He saved me in every way a person can be saved, and I look forward to enjoying our family and raising our babies together. I also

continued on page 49

deeply appreciate my paternal grandfather, Buster Shallenberger, who helped guide me in my parents’ absence, putting me through nursing school and believing in me. I miss my parents deeply.”

Cristina utilized her nursing education and 14 years of experience as a nurse practitioner in medical and cosmetic dermatology to open Skin Bio with her husband combining their backgrounds to launch a medical spa in their hometown of Calabasas. They employ aesthetic and functional medicine focused on skin health and body wellness, offering injectables, lasers, microneedling, facials, peels, and medical-grade skincare for optimal skin health. Additionally, the Borhanis integrate functional medicine, including medical weight loss, dietary supplementation, vitamin shots, hormone optimization, biomarker lab testing, and IV drips.

Korosh, a board-certified physician in emergency medicine and regenerative medicine, offers a variety of proactive solutions to prevent acute and chronic healthcare problems. After completing his undergraduate degrees in psychology and biology from the University of California, Irvine, Korosh received his medical degree from Midwestern University in Arizona. His post-graduate training and board certification were in emergency medicine at Michigan State UniversitySaint John's Providence Hospital, where he graduated as chief resident. He completed his advanced fellowship and board certification in regenerative medicine at the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. He currently splits his time working at West Hills Hospital as an emergency medicine physician and working alongside Cristina at Skin Bio as a functional medicine physician. Korosh’s career and experience allow him to tailor treatment plans for thousands of patients’ healthcare throughout the community.

Calabasas style 49
The Borhanis knew they wanted to settle close to Korosh’s family where they grew up in Calabasas and where they could continue to serve the community.

“Functional medicine enables me to offer preventative solutions to various healthcare problems before they become debilitating,” notes Korosh. “I see people in the emergency room with chronic conditions which are frequently at the end stage. I want to help people avoid conditions requiring emergency intervention through health optimization and wellness. At Skin Bio, I am able to promote wellness by treating patients for a broad range of health conditions, including weight-loss resistance, digestive disturbances, fatigue, and hormonal imbalances.” In addition to working at Skin Bio and West Hills Hospital, Korosh created LAEmergencyDoc.com to offer concierge emergency medical care using online appointments to help patients in the comfort of their own homes. When not helping others, Korosh enjoys watching the Lakers, training in jiu-jitsu, and spending time with his family.

“Most people don’t know this, but I aspired to be an opera singer before I became a nurse practitioner,” reveals Cristina, who received a bachelor of arts from USC in music prior to launching her career as a nurse practitioner. These days, Cristina loves singing opera, doing musical theater and yoga, and being a mom to Bobby and Enzo and tells us, “I made the decision that music would be my passion and being a nurse practitioner in dermatology would be my career.” Cristina received a bachelors of science in nursing from Mount Saint Mary’s College as a registered nurse and a masters of science in nursing from Azusa Pacific University as a family nurse practitioner.

Somehow this busy family also finds time to travel. “Our favorite summer destination is Cabo San

50 Calabasas style

Lucas,” explains Korosh. “We go once a year and always stay at the same resort–called the One and Only Palmilla. Our favorite place to travel during the winter is Napa Valley. We go every December to celebrate our wedding anniversary and stay in the same cottage where we were married.”

Closer to home, the Borhanis enjoy dining at King's Fish House and recently held a staff appreciation dinner for Skin Bio employees at Crossroads in The Commons. Toscanova also holds a special place in their hearts as Cristina worked there as a hostess during high school.

The Borhanis knew they wanted to settle close to Korosh’s family where they grew up in Calabasas and where they could continue to serve the community. Cristina moved from Pleasanton to Calabasas in second grade and lived in Mountain View Estates until college. Korosh moved from Iran to the United States when he was just three years old. He lived in the West Hills and Canoga Park areas until leaving for college at UC Irvine. Cristina went to Lupin Hill Elementary in Calabasas and Korosh attended Sumac Elementary in Agoura Hills. Both attended A.E. Wright Middle School and graduated from Calabasas High School in 2001. They came full circle when they bought their dream home together in the lovely Mulwood area of Calabasas in 2017.

“We enjoy seeing how much Calabasas has evolved,” recalls Cristina. “We think about when The Commons was first built and love to see how popular it has become, not only to Calabasas residents but throughout the entire Valley. We remember when Leonis Adobe and Sagebrush Cantina were the only central spots in town, and the Courtyard at The Commons, the post office, and Gelson’s Village looked very different. I have fond memories as a kid in Calabasas during the 90s, shopping for housewares with my mom at Sperling’s Nursery, eating at Bacio’s (now Rosti), and frequenting Calabasas Yogurt and Video.”

“Although our city is growing and becoming more popular, it still has that small-town feel that it did when we grew up,” adds Korosh.

We look forward to watching this remarkable family grow and thrive as they continue to serve the Calabasas community they so clearly love. n

“Although our city is growing and becoming more popular, it still has that small-town feel that it did when we grew up.”

The 2024 Corvette E-Ray

The Corvette, was an American icon, and the C8 Corvette was truly a game-changer for Chevrolet in every way–an entire new vehicle to usher in a new era of American excellence. It put the supercar manufacturers on notice and attracted an entire new market segment: everyone.

For 2024, Chevrolet has, again, raised the bar with the Corvette E-Ray. This latest iteration of the Corvette will be all-wheel drive and offer a hybrid powertrain. Again, not dissimilar to other supercars utilizing hybrid technology to maximize performance, Chevrolet claims zero-to-sixty milesper-hour in 2.5 seconds and that the E-Ray sprints the quarter-mile in 10.5 seconds. If indeed these numbers are correct, it could be potentially the fastest Corvette ever. Top speed is estimated to be over 180 miles per hour.

Performance is supplied by the E-Ray’s 160-hp front-mounted electric motor and 495-hp midmounted 6.2-liter V-8 combine for 655 horses. The E-Ray shares the Z06’s wider rear quarters as well as the amazing carbon-ceramic brakes. There are also many other options that will be available, including a performance package. Once again, Chevrolet is gunning for the European supercar market, and I think the market should be worried. The E-Ray will start at $104,295 for the targa and $111,295 for the convertible. WHAT IS

Style? Calabasas

While out and about on what felt like the inaugural day of summer, my family and I spent the afternoon taking in the atmosphere of The Commons at Calabasas. We treated ourselves to ice cream from Jeni’s and tasty lemonade from La La Land, all while looking for the essence of Calabasas Style . Our community’s unique blend of elegance, hip-hop culture, fitness enthusiasm, and relaxed demeanor are all particularly noticeable this time of year, all of which characterize what is Calabasas Style . The charm of Calabasas lies in the distinctive styles of all the individuals that make up our community. Every style is unique, with no two people alike. Amongst the crowd were a few individuals who, on that sun-kissed day, particularly caught my eye and embodied what we discern as quintessential Calabasas Style .

Mindful Meditation

A path to inner serenity

In our fast-paced, 24/7-connected world, it can feel as if there is no respite from the relentless onslaught of information, responsibilities, and stimuli. The urgent need for a peaceful retreat within has never been more critical. This is where meditation and mindfulness step in, transforming our inner world into a sanctuary of calmness and tranquility.

Meditation, a centuries-old practice, has transcended time and cultural boundaries, evolving into an indispensable tool in our modern toolkit for holistic wellbeing. But what exactly is meditation? Simply put, it is the act of focusing the mind, often but not always, on a specific object, thought, or activity to train attention and awareness, achieving a mentally clear and emotionally calm state. Studies have shown that regular meditation can reduce stress, enhance concentration, promote emotional health, and even slow aging at the cellular level.

Closely related to meditation is the concept of mindfulness, a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. By fostering mindfulness, we cultivate a heightened awareness of the world around us and our interactions with it. The most beautiful aspect of mindfulness is its applicability to any moment of our day—be it while eating, walking, or even engaging in a conversation.

The benefits of mindfulness are far-reaching. It trains the mind to stay in the present, away from the regrets of the past and anxieties about the future. This focus on the present cultivates a higher degree of self-understanding, thereby empowering us to respond more effectively to life’s stressors. Moreover, mindfulness has been proven to increase empathy, enhance relationships, and boost creativity and productivity.

Incorporating meditation and mindfulness into our daily routines might seem daunting initially. However, even with short periods of practice—five to 10 minutes a day—we can reap significant benefits.

To get started, choose a quiet, comfortable spot and set a timer. Focus on your breath and the rise and fall of your chest or use a guided meditation available online. The key is to observe without judgment, acknowledge thoughts and feelings as they arise, and gently guide the focus back to the present moment.

Remember, it’s not about silencing thoughts or achieving a state of eternal bliss—but about fostering an intimate understanding of the mind.

In the turbulent sea of life, meditation and mindfulness serve as anchors, grounding us amidst the chaos. In this ever-evolving journey, we learn to navigate our internal landscape, cultivate peace, and embody resilience, thus enriching not only our lives but also the lives of those we touch. n

A beautiful smile is everything. It has the power to fill others with joy and make you more confident and successful. It’s also one of the first things people notice about you. As one of only 480 accredited cosmetic dentists in the world, Dr. Bernie Villadiego’s devotion to the art and science of dentistry means you can have a beautiful smile that will last. EXQUISITE

GET Creative With Fun Summer Makeup

With warmer weather comes inspiration to lighten the layers— not only in your summer wardrobe. From triedand-true classics to bold new favorites, this season’s makeup trends seek to lighten your makeup coverage and your cosmetics bag. With a few tips and tricks, you can simplify your routine without compromising your flawless summer look— and still look like you spent hours in front of the mirror.

1. No-makeup makeup

Healthy skin is in, so nobody wants to wear a full face of makeup when it’s sweltering outside. For radiant skin, ditch the full-coverage foundation. Instead, grab a tinted moisturizer. If it has SPF, that’s a plus! Blend it with a beauty sponge and finish with a light cream blush for some cheeky color and a barely-there complexion.

2. Monochromatic look

Create an effortlessly cool tonal look from your

eyes

down to your lips just by utilizing a single product for eye-shadow, blush, and lipstick. This foolproof trend requires choosing a color that is most flattering to you—a warm neutral, peachy pink, or bronzy brown are popular options.

3. The cat-eye resurgence

Elevate any look with a kittenish flick. Black winged eyeliner is a classic beauty trend that works for every style. Pro tip: When applying, pull the wing upward and outward to

elongate the eyes. If applying your own liner is daunting, grab a liquid liner stamp to achieve the perfect swoop.

4. Juicy lips

Glistening lips are the perfect complement to dewy skin. This summer, choose a glassy gloss that enhances your natural lip color. Formulas with nourishing ingredients, like natural oils or peptides, are always fabulous.

5. Vanishing brows

Many remember the days of barely-there brows, but are you ready to go totally without? If you’re not willing to commit to the boldness of bleach but still want to achieve the sophisticated runway model, no-brow look, try covering your browns in concealer to make them disappear for the day. n

Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau are FDA- approved neuromodulators which temporarily remove wrinkles from the face and neck. The most common areas for treatment include the forehead, glabella aka frown lines, crow’s feet, areas around the mouth, chin, and neck.

Unlike Botox, which relaxes the muscles responsible for forming wrinkles, dermal fillers are injectable gels that diminish the appearance of wrinkles and folds on the face. Dermal fillers are used to restore volume to areas where bone, fat, and muscle are diminished.

MEN'S DIET AND

H ealth

The critical

path to optimal wellness

The correlation between diet and health has been the subject of extensive research, but when it comes to men’s health, a specific approach is required. The general nutritional requirements are similar between the genders, but there are certain unique aspects to consider when it comes to men’s health.

Men, especially those over 40, are more susceptible to diseases like heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. This underlines the significance of incorporating a health-conscious diet into their daily routines.

Protein, for instance, plays a critical role in men’s health, serving as the building block of muscles, bones, skin, and blood. It is crucial for those engaging in regular physical activities or strength training. But protein intake should be balanced because excessive consumption could strain the kidneys. Healthy sources include lean meat, poultry, fish, beans, and nuts.

Also, fruits and vegetables are non-negotiable components of a healthy diet. They are rich in many vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that boost the immune system and lower the risk of chronic diseases. Particularly, leafy greens and brightly colored vegetables like carrots and tomatoes as well as fruits such as oranges and berries should be regularly included in meals.

Fiber is another crucial part of a good diet for men. It helps maintain a healthy weight, lowers cholesterol levels, and reduces the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Foods

such as whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables are excellent sources.

Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish like salmon and mackerel, as well as flaxseeds and walnuts have numerous benefits for men’s health. They aid in reducing inflammation, improving heart health, and potentially reducing anxiety and depression.

Although these dietary components contribute to overall health, portion control and balance are equally critical. Consuming oversized portions, even of healthy foods, can lead to unnecessary weight gain. Therefore, men should be mindful of their intake and strive for balanced meals.

Finally, hydration is a vital yet often overlooked aspect of men’s health. Adequate water consumption helps regulate body temperature, supports physical performance, and aids digestion.

Regular exercise should accompany a healthy diet. Physical activity helps manage weight, boosts mood, and promotes better sleep. Strength training in combination with aerobic exercise can offer optimal health benefits for men.

In addition to preventive healthcare, which would include regular medical check-ups and screenings, again, we emphasize the importance of making informed and sustainable dietary choices for men. By doing so, men can make a significant impact on their overall health and lower the risk of developing various diseases. n

Fair Trade Beauty: What It Is & Why It Matters

Skincare and cosmetics, like food, are most often made of plants. And just like our food system can promote unfair labor practices, the same goes for skincare ingredients. Meet Beautyologie, the first fair-trade and ethically sourced online beauty marketplace with the mission to use beauty as a force for good. Created by Robin Tolkan-Doyle, who was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley and obsessed about all things beauty since her days of shopping at the Sherman Oaks Galleria, Beautyologie offers products that make a difference, not just on the surface of the skin but in the world we live in.

“The products we use on a daily basis are made up of ingredients from all around the world,” says Doyle. “From Ghana and India to Peru, people are sourcing the argan, shea, and mica in our shampoo, face oil, and lip gloss. When fairtrade practices are put in place, we can be assured that the producers are being paid fair wages, that there is gender equality in the workplace, and that child labor is not an issue. With so many beauty products in the world, let’s at least use the ones that are doing more good than harm.”

Brotox and Beyond: Modern Men Embrace Med Spas

In what once was considered a predominantly female market, many men felt out of place visiting a med spa for cosmetic services. But over recent years, there has been a noticeable transition in societal norms related to the aesthetic medicine industry—so much so that the tonguein-cheek term “Brotox” was coined to refer to the more than 265,000 men who received Botox treatments in 2020 alone.

One of the key reasons men are drawn to med spas is the non-invasive nature of the treatments. A few simple injections of Botox into your face turn back the clock on wrinkles, relaxing your facial muscles with no downtime required. Other treatments gaining popularity include other injectables, like Dysport and Jeuveau, fillers, and laser skin-resurfacing treatments, which also allow guys to get back to their

regularly scheduled activities posttreatment while achieving a well-kempt and refreshed appearance with little effort. Another popular treatment is PRP hair rejuvenation, which stimulates hair growth without a visible trace, combating baldness naturally.

And it doesn’t stop there. Med spa services extending beyond anti-aging treatments are also gaining popularity with male clientele as they discover benefits of wellness therapies like B12 injections and vitamin IVs. Body-sculpting treatments like Emsculpt are favorable for men looking to increase muscle and cut down on gym time. Preventative treatments like wart and mole removal and cancer screening are also incredibly beneficial, no matter your gender.

In our competitive, youth-obsessed culture, men continue to feel pressure to

look and feel their best. Studies published in Forbes Magazine and elsewhere point out the link between success and appearance. While it’s certainly not true in every case, maintaining a competitive edge by looking youthful remains an issue in the workplace and beyond. Social media doesn’t help either as it displays photos all across the Internet. When it comes time for a new job or relationship, putting forth a look of vitality and youthfulness often helps. Men may choose cosmetic anti-aging and wellness treatments to improve the odds of gaining that much-sought-after position or romantic partner.

As treatments continue to evolve, there is far less stigma attached to male aesthetic treatments than ever before. Men can speak to a med spa expert or healthcare professional to find out which procedures work best for them. n

Beauty Serums

There’s definitely something mysterious about beauty serums. Many of us wonder exactly what they do, how to use them, and when and where to apply these magical elixirs for optimal results.

What they do

Facial serums transport molecules deep within our skin to exert beautifying benefits, such as hydrating and nourishing delicate areas. Popular ingredients include antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, and botanical agents for anti-aging, hydration, brightening, and beyond.

A serum containing vitamins C, A, and E and resveratrol, for instance, fights free radicals that damage cells due to oxidative stress from UV rays and environmental toxins.

How to use serums

It’s best to apply just three to four drops of serum after washing your face and before using moisturizer and/or makeup. Designed to quickly disperse active ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acids, retinol (a derivative of vitamin A), enzymes from plant or fruit extracts, and citric acid for exfoliation, each serum blend usually serves a specific purpose and skin type. It’s best to layer no more than two serums, starting with the thinnest, for best absorption.

Where and when to apply

Apply facial serums to your cheeks, forehead, and chin and/or under your eyes to help prevent discoloration, wrinkles, oxidative damage, and dehydration. Choose a formula geared to your specific needs, such as plumping up

the delicate area beneath your eyes. Skin specialists generally recommend using anti-pigmentation and antioxidant serums, such as those containing vitamin C, which becomes less effective when exposed to light, in the morning. Use hydrating serums during the day. Apply anti-aging serums in the evening to assist overnight skin repair. Those with especially sensitive skin may want to try serums containing bakuchiol, a plantbased alternative to retinol that stimulates collagen production, or mandelic acid in lieu of glycolic and salicylic acids.

When you crave something stronger than cool compresses, cucumbers, or caffeinated tea bags to reduce undereye puffiness, consider facial serums. Or try hydrating serums to soothe dry skin in lieu of natural almond or coconut oil. n

THE SECRETS
BEHIND

BRILLIANCE DERMATOLOGY

Dermatologists address it all—from beautifying cosmetic procedures to body sculpting and life-saving skin-cancer surgeries. In 2012, Calabasas native, board-certified dermatologist, and Mohs surgeon Hal M. Weitzbuch, M.D., M.S., F.A.A.D., returned to his roots to become Medical Director of Calabasas Dermatology Center, where Dr. Robert De Stefano previously treated patients since 1989. Now, a decade later, Dr. Weitzbuch has expanded his office with a second location in Thousand Oaks and a new name that reflects his high standard of patient care—Brilliance Dermatology.

“Brilliance Dermatology provides the same unsurpassable experience and amazing staff that patients of all ages—from pediatric to geriatric—have come to expect,” says Dr. Weitzbuch. “Our Calabasas office remains exactly the same. I’ll still see patients there, as well as at our new location in Thousand Oaks. We’re simply turning up the brilliance with a second location, offering convenient on-site parking, a Quest lab, and a pharmacy.”

Both cutting-edge medical offices offer medical, cosmetic, and surgical treatments for skin, hair, and nail conditions, such as skin cancer, acne, rashes, warts, and unwanted moles. Cosmetically, they provide a multitude of treatments, such as Botox and Juvederm, Restylane, Voluma, and Sculptra filler injections for facial-wrinkle reduction. Dr. Weitzbuch and his distinguished practitioners—Emily Craft, NP-BC; Katie Frederickson, FNP-BC; Rebecca Gamliel, PA; and others—also perform numerous laser

procedures for overall facial rejuvenation, including Secret RF radiofrequency microneedling, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) photofacial treatments, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) skin rejuvenation and hair restoration. They also offer stateof-the-art Fractional C02 Laser resurfacing to regenerate collagen and elastin and reverse signs of aging due to sun exposure and environmental pollutants. The doctor also specializes in Mohs micrographic surgical excision for head and neck lesions, with convenient post-op reconstruction right in their offices.

Dr. Weitzbuch and his compassionate staff provide a boutique concierge-style practice where patients receive an elite level of care from start to finish. They pride themselves on not overdoing cosmetic procedures and sending patients home with a refreshed and more youthful look rather than an over-treated and different-looking face. Patients can speak to full-time registered nurses on the phone and always find a provider on call. The doctor and staff also go the extra mile

to ensure every patient receives the best experience, such as utilizing specialized pharmacies for the most affordably priced medication. Above all, they spend quality time with each patient, educating them about their condition and all of the risks and benefits of any treatment plan. “We treat our patients as we would our own families—parents, grandparents, and children,” says Dr. Weitzbuch.

Dr. Weitzbuch received a bachelor of science in biomedical engineering from Northwestern University, followed by a master’s degree in applied physiology at the Chicago Medical School, where he obtained his medical degree. A one-year surgical internship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and dermatology residency at the famed Cook County Hospital followed. He then carried his years of training back to Calabasas and Thousand Oaks.

Dr. Weitzbuch also works as a professor of medicine at UCLA, where he teaches dermatology residents and volunteers his time seeing patients at L.A. County UCLAOlive View Medical Center. The esteemed doctor sums it up brilliantly, “We’re your neighborhood dermatologists for all of your family’s skincare needs and look forward to treating patients for decades to come.” n

Achieving Salon-Worthy Manicures at Home

In our fast-paced lives, juggling work and family responsibilities, finding time to visit the nail salon for regular touch-ups can be a challenge. As a busy individual myself, I understand the struggle. That is why I have tried almost every nail polish on the market, searching for a solution that combines long-lasting results with convenience. Thankfully, I found a solution I have been using for many years: Essie Gel Couture Nail Polish .

Essie Gel Couture has become my go-to for reclaiming the precious hours otherwise spent sitting in a salon chair. While I still value my salon visits several times a year, Essie helps me maintain a fresh, manicured look during those in-between times. Offering the quality of a professional gel manicure, this polish can be easily applied at home, delivering a durable finish that lasts up to about two weeks.

Due to the quick-drying formula, I can apply the polish in just a few spare moments, even right before I step out the door. There's no need to worry about smudging or waiting for layers to dry. I apply and let them dry as I go about my business, making it quick and hassle-free— which I am all about.

When it's time for a refresh, the ease of removal, devoid of any damaging scraping or soaking, is another aspect I truly appreciate. All it takes is acetone

or non-acetone nail polish remover. And reapplying the topcoat on day seven is one of my favorite tricks to revive the shine and extend the lifespan of my manicure without starting from scratch.

The longevity of the Essie Gel is truly impressive. Even my busiest days are no match for this chip-resistant polish. As for the color palette, it’s quite extensive. I've developed a particular fondness for the neutral pink shades Matter of Fiction and Princess Charming, but there is sure to be something to suit every taste.

Next time you’re in need of a fresh manicure but short on time, skip the salon and check out Essie Gel Couture. You won’t be disappointed. n

TIPS AND TRICKS TO DEPUFF YOUR FACE

Enjoy a few drinks last night? Indulge in a salty midnight snack? Maybe you just got off the plane on vacation or you’re enduring a hot summer’s day. A common culprit behind facial puffiness is dehydration and, subsequently, water retention, which explains why all these scenarios can cause a bloated face. Throw in the ever-present lack of sleep or congestion—especially during the summer months when allergies are at their peak—and you may find yourself in desperate need of some tips and tools to slim down and refresh your face.

Icy face bath

There’s nothing quite like a surge of ice-cold water to the face to wake you up and get your blood flowing. Whether you splash your face in the sink or massage your face with ice cubes, the frigid temperature works wonders on a swollen face. Or if you dare, dunk your face in a bowl filled with ice cubes and water for faster, more-immediate results. The few minutes of discomfort are well worth the results of ice-water therapy.

Caffeine fix

Drinking your favorite latte can’t help you here unfortunately, but incorporating its main ingredient into your skincare can. If your under-eyes are puffy, caffeine-infused under-eye patches or cream are a quick pick-meup for the skin. When applied topically, the energy-boosting substance has a shrinking effect on blood vessels surrounding the eye area and acts quickly to deflate those pesky bags.

Roll it out

Stimulate lymphatic drainage by using a jade facial roller or gua sha tool, moving excess fluid towards the lymph nodes where it can be carried away. For best results, move in a lateral motion, away from the center of your face and towards the lymph nodes located along the jawline and in front of the ears. Store your roller in the fridge or freezer for increased effectiveness.

Other tricks include at-home face masks or LED masks. And of course, most importantly, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! n

for Health and Beauty Essential Oils

Essential oils have been used for millennia. As far back as 4,500 B.C., ancient Egyptians combined flowers, leaves, and other plant parts in fatty oils for ceremonies and healing. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, even noted, “A perfumed bath and scented massage everyday is the way to good health.”

Fast-forward to the 21st century. Fragrant oils have gone mainstream. When inhaled or applied directly to the skin, these concentrated plant extracts offer a range of benefits, from boosting mood, improving sleep, and reducing inflammation to relieving headaches, nausea, and anxiety and destroying fungus and bacteria.

Some of the more popular oils include gentle lavender to promote relaxation; peppermint to fight fatigue, relieve headaches, and improve digestion; eucalyptus to clear congestion; and antifungal, antiseptic tea tree. Their beneficial compounds are extracted through pressing or steaming specific parts of each plant. Oils can be made at home but keep in mind that it takes an enormous amount to create each scent. For

example, it takes 250 pounds of lavender to produce a pound of essential oil. It may be simpler to purchase essential oils online or at a local pharmacy, skincare store, or spiritual shop.

When shopping for essential oils, be sure they’re made from actual plants versus being synthetically produced. The latter may smell nice but will prove far less effective. Since the oils are already so concentrated, it’s best to dilute them in vegetable oil, bath gel, or body cream. Or simply use a drop or two in the bath or shower for relaxation or as a decongestant.

Most essential oils will retain their potency for up to a year when stored in a bottle in a cool, dry place. They should be kept away from pets and children since they can cause harm if ingested or misused. Also, proceed cautiously during pregnancy since the oils might stimulate contractions.

Dab a few diluted drops of peppermint oil on your temples to calm a headache. Use a diffuser to release scents into the air, or purchase a bottle with a roll-on applicator for easier use. Special blends, such as cinnamon bark, clove, eucalyptus, and rosemary, can be found to help combat an oncoming cold. Try different oil combinations or consult an aromatherapist to learn more about the myriad beneficial properties of each essential oil. n

EASE YOUR PAIN WITH DRY NEEDLING

Dry needling continues to gain popularity among physical therapists, doctors, and other health professionals in fighting pain and improving mobility. Although the needles are similar to those used in the ancient Chinese art of acupuncture, which focuses on balancing the body’s energy, or “chi,” along certain meridians or pathways, dry needling evolved much more recently within Western medicine to reduce pain.

During a dry needling session, a therapist applies fine needles to various trigger points to release muscle tightness and pain due to tendonitis; temporomandibular joint (TMJ) soft-tissue injuries; repetitive motion disorders, such as carpal tunnel syndrome; postherpetic neuralgia from shingles; autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis; and more. Thin needles are inserted into specific, knotted trigger points within a muscle near the source of pain to increase blood flow and decrease tightness. Unlike trigger-point injections that supply pain medication to an area, these tiny needles remain “dry.”

Needles remain in place for as little as two seconds or as long as 20 minutes. Therapists also use an in-and-out technique to stimulate a twitching response that helps muscles perform more normally. Although generally used at trigger points, dry needling may also be applied to tissues to promote blood flow and healing, similar to acupuncture. The needles may cause discomfort when applied to already sensitive areas. Physical therapists usually combine this treatment with other therapies involving stretching, exercise, and massage.

Only certain people are allowed to practice this technique. In California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, and New York, only licensed acupuncturists and medical doctors can perform dry needling, according to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Consult your doctor to learn more about possible side effects from bruising to fatigue and whether this innovative procedure is right for you. n

Going Grey Gracefully

There comes a time in most of our lives when our grey hairs begin to outnumber the rest. At that point, we can either grab the nearest bottle of hair dye or let nature take its course and go grey naturally.

Fortunately, the greying process, like wrinkling, occurs gradually over time. We don’t wake up one morning with a head full of grey hair. Blondes usually have it easiest. Grey generally looks more natural with cool blonde hair. Blondes might consider coloring their hair a shade lighter to make the growth less noticeable or getting highlights to match their multi-colored strands.

In our youth-obsessed culture, we often measure age by the number of grey hairs on our heads. Although we want to look and feel as young as possible, hair color that doesn’t match our skin tone can add even more years to our appearance. Luckily, we can, instead, let the grey grow and use shampoos that add moisture to help coarse grey hair maintain its luster. Deep conditioning once or twice a week also keeps those wiry salt and pepper strands looking vibrant.

Avail yourself of the numerous social media sites in support of transitioning to gray hair that include tips, tricks, techniques, tools, and product suggestions that make the process easy and fun!

And then, we can count our blessings for our newly acquired grey locks and keep smiling. After all, there’s nothing better than our smiles to keep us looking more youthful. n

The 2024 Lamborghini Revuelto

Lamborghini is Lamborghini. Bold, awe-inspiring, loud, exciting, and...electric! Say it ain’t so. Lamborghini has gone hybrid? The big, bad V12 that screams like no other engine on the planet is complemented by three electric motors that will help this hypercar reach an astounding 1001 horsepower. Lamborghini is once again proving that it is truly at the cutting edge of, well, everything automotive.

The Lamborghini Revuelto is Lamborghini’s first foray into the hybrid market segment and will be an instant collector’s item that only the ultra-A-list owners and collectors will be able to get their hands on. It is estimated that this revolutionary Lamborghini will be somewhere in the high $800Ks to low $900Ks as a starting price. And if pricing of hypercars is as it has been for the past couple of years, there will definitely be a market adjustment and I would not be surprised to see this car instantly sell out with a price tag of over $1 million.

If you’re a car enthusiast, you’ve been crossing your fingers and saying prayers that Lamborghini would never get rid of the iconic V12 engine, as there is truly nothing else like it. To pay homage to the legendary masterpiece, the V12 in the Revuelto is naturally aspirated, 6.5 liters, and a symphony of hell-fire that screams up to a 9500-RPM redline. Now that, my friends, is a sound dreams are made of. The V12 pushed out 814-hp on its own and again with the integrated electric motors and is over 1,000 horsepower! To the dreamers, engineers, and innovators at Lamborghini, well done and thank you. Keep it Lamborghini and keep innovating. For more information, visit Lamborghini.com n

PREPARING FOR WHAT COMES NEXT

Life after the sale of your business

Where you are today is the result of your passion for the business you’ve built—and a lifetime of work.

But what is your vision for life after you walk away from your business? What you do next is critical for you and your family. It’s a time when you need to shift your focus to personal fulfillment, wealth planning and more.

You. Your family. Your employees.

Your business goes to the heart of who you are and what you do. Even for family members, your decision to sell your business may represent a significant change in wealth and status. Some owners have a clear separation between family and their business. However, communicating with those who could benefit the most may be important to a successful plan.

124 Calabasas style

Many owners assure employees that a sale will have no practical impact on them. However, once the sale has gone through and you are no longer involved in the decisions, it can be hard to know. This may mean a period of tension and uncertainty— which can have an emotional impact on you.

Here's what we heard from business owners: “It’s sad and hard when you sell because you’ve not only invested time and money, but also a bit of your soul.”

“A part of me was delighted but another part of me was sad. The office was like a second home.”

Prepare for your exit

In the February 2018 issue of UBS Investor Watch, we found that 48% of business owners don’t have a formal exit strategy in place. Here are three key tips for getting started.

1. Plan ahead

Long-term planning is key to any successful sale, because it helps you focus on what’s important. Starting planning conversations early with your financial advisor, tax professional and estate planning attorney will help you be confident about your future. Be certain that advanced income, legacy and tax planning are a part of these conversations.

2. Define what you want

Spend time thinking about what you want after the sale. Reflect on your passions and plan for what you want to accomplish. UBS Investor Watch research found that 48% of business owners look forward to traveling more, while 26% plan to give back to their community or causes.

3. Break the silence

UBS Investor Watch research shows that only about 25% of former business owners engaged their children and heirs in a conversation about family wealth. Communicate early about what you expect or hope for. This creates a clearer picture and gives everyone involved a chance to contribute.

The power of emotions

Selling your business is about letting go. This can be a profound change with powerful emotional impacts. For some owners, it’s confusing. For others, there’s a sense of elation. Many talk about feelings of depression and a lack of purpose.

Here's what we heard from business owners:

“I felt very muted. I didn’t know how to process it. I had to figure out how to deal with a new reality.”

“I had been working hard for a long time. At the

beginning, I did nothing, and it was great. People say you get bored, but I didn’t—it was wonderful.”

Planning for life after the sale: the six stages

As business owners contemplate a transition, they wonder what life will look like after the sale. We’ve identified six stages that most owners go through. Think through these questions well before your transition.

1. Recharge. Is a vacation or dream purchase needed? Do you need some space to think? Is an escape and recharge needed?

2. Self. How much money do you have and need? Is your wealth life-changing or life-enhancing?

3. Enabling. What professional advice do you need? Do you have the right advisory team?

4. Family. How should you support your family? Should you set money aside for home purchases and education?

5. Legacy. What do you want to leave for future generations and your employees? How should it be left?

In the bustling city of Los Angeles, where construction projects are a common sight, one company has managed to stand out from the rest.

Founded by CEO Yanni Brikman, Better Together Builders is a construction company that has become synonymous with quality and customer service. This dedication to excellence has not only earned them a stellar reputation but has also set a new standard for contractors in Los Angeles County.

The secret to their success lies in their unique philosophy, which places customer satisfaction at the forefront of everything they do. As Brikman explains, "We strive to make sure our customers are happy with the work we do and that they feel like part of our family." This commitment to exceeding expectations has allowed Better Together Builders to build lasting relationships with their clients and foster a loyal customer base.

A key factor in their ability to deliver top-notch results is the company's organizational structure. Unlike other contractors, Better Together Builders employs multiple layers of management, each tasked with supervising and monitoring the quality of work done on job sites. This meticulous approach ensures that all projects are completed according to the highest standards, leaving no room for error or subpar workmanship.

Style Trends

Current design trends are transforming from ultra-modern sleek edges and defined lines to a warmer and cozier but still modern look. It is less of a departure and more of an evolution into a more comfortable version of its predecessor. We’re moving away from high-contrast whites and blacks towards earth-toned neutrals, which soften and add diffusion to any space. The new area of contrast is found in bold monochromatic patterns.

With these bold fabrics, function as well as form are on trend. Stain-resistant and high-performance fabrics are a must. Designed to withstand the rigors of everyday life, these fabrics offer durability without compromising style. Indoor-outdoor fabric, hand-made woven pieces, and natural woods all help blur the lines between exterior and interior. These new fabrics have a luxurious interior feel with a durability that can withstand the exterior elements.

Window treatments are vital to the ambience of a space. I use multiple layers of drapery since it allows for the customization and control of how much ambient light enters a room, setting the mood as well as providing privacy. The possibilities are endless, from sheer and airy to opulent and luxurious.

The movement towards more organic forms is found in architectural detailing as well. Rounded walls and corners are rising in popularity. These design elements further soften the overall aesthetic, creating a sense of flow and harmony. From arched entryways to curved accent walls, this trend adds a touch of grace and elegance to any room. As more homes become integrated with technology, we seek to balance out that harder edge with more organic moments to create a homey atmosphere. Plastered walls are also making a comeback, infusing spaces with texture and sophistication. The versatility of plaster is part of its appeal. Whether it’s a smooth, polished finish or a more rustic, textured look, plastered walls provide a timeless aesthetic that can be tailored to suit any design style.

The popularity of hand-made furniture pieces is also on the rise as a greater emphasis is put on sustainability and natural aesthetics. Hand-made pieces along with woodgrain finishes create an organic and comfortable

look. This woodgrain is echoed in shelving and cabinetry as well to add a pop of texture to the walls. Open shelves have become a staple in contemporary interior design. By eschewing traditional closed cabinetry, open shelves offer an opportunity to showcase curated collections, stylish decor, and beloved books. This design trend not only adds an interesting visual element but also promotes accessibility and makes organization easier.

Design is always evolving. My personal preference is to make the foundation of a home’s design timeless so that as styles evolve, the home can be updated with ease. When introducing new elements to a space, it’s important to look both at the enduring styles as well as the newer trends to make a home feel refreshing and exciting. n

Helping Customers Feel Right at Home for Over 40 Years

Founded in 1981 under the name Warehouse Discount Center, WDC began as a 2,000-square-foot appliance showroom in Agoura Hills. It has since grown to become not only the largest independently owned specialty retailer of its type on the West Coast, but one of the largest in the nation.

Family-owned WDC, whose corporate headquarters is now located in nearby Moorpark, currently operates five luxurious showrooms throughout Southern California with another coming soon in Palm Desert, which will be the company’s largest to date. WDC continues to provide great deals on high-quality kitchen and bath appliances, plumbing fixtures, outdoor cooking appliances, mattresses, and more, plus free local delivery on orders $599 and above. WDC KITCHEN AND BATH CENTER

Technology, as in many other industries, is revolutionizing the appliance industry. One of the fastest-growing trends is steam cooking. Convection steam ovens provide a healthy alternative to standard, conventional ovens. Food cooked with steam at the same high heat used in baking or roasting retains more of its natural vitamins, minerals, and moisture for juicy, delicious results. These smart ovens also employ preprogrammed settings that make cooking as easy as pressing a button.

Additional trends include the use of vibrant colors in the kitchen, such as Samsung’s interchangeable refrigerator panels that add a burst of color to any kitchen design.

Viking and AGA also offer their new Delta Hues Collection with colors inspired by nature from Frost White and Reduction

Red to Black Forest Green and Alluvial Blue. Even kitchen faucets have jumped on the colorful bandwagon. Grohe Essence Semi-Pro Dual Spray Kitchen Faucets, for instance, feature a flexible hose spout available in multiple colors.

WDC prides itself on providing some of the highest-quality products and customer care. The family-owned company continues to put employees and customers first so that everyone feels like part of the family. The professional sales team receives continual product training directly from manufacturers so they always stay abreast of the latest trends and innovations within the industry. Not only are they highly educated, but they also possess years of experience leading customers through a maze of intriguing possibilities. Year after year, WDC’s consistently high level of customer care clearly keeps everyone coming back for more. n

INTERNATIONAL PROTECTIVE SERVICE

Elevating Security Standards in Calabasas and Beyond

In our modern world, where the quest for safety and security is on everyone's radar, a beacon shines brightly from the city of Calabasas: the International Protective Service (IPS). The vision of Aaron Jones, IPS was founded in 2006 with a mission to safeguard not just the glitterati but ordinary citizens too. Now recognized as a national pioneer in security and investigative services, IPS expanded its operations to Malibu in 2018. Advancing to the present day, IPS's coverage spans from Hollywood to Ventura County, solidifying its reputation as the epitome of security services.

At IPS, the focus is on rigorous training and selective recruitment. Jones explains, "Our six-part hiring process filters out unsuitable candidates right from the start." In addition to a meticulous background check conducted in-house, candidates are subjected to a government-grade investigation, providing an extra layer of scrutiny. For this prestigious outfit, hiring only law enforcement, from military communities, or seasoned security professionals is not just a choice but a mandate.

Potential IPS guards, regardless of their previous professional experience, are required to hold a valid firearms permit. They must also undergo rigorous training and pass a psychological evaluation, ensuring they are mentally prepared to handle a firearm responsibly.

The portfolio of services offered by IPS is comprehensive, including home protection, patrol operations, event security, armed transportation, and private investigation. Jones proudly

shares, "We offer the full spectrum of law enforcement services but at a concierge level." IPS maintains a 24/7 dispatch center, ready to respond to any alarm, conduct vacation checks, or deploy guards at short notice. Moreover, IPS boasts a K-9 division, an aviation division, and an investigative division, cementing its position as a comprehensive security service provider.

Given the escalating issue of mass shootings, IPS has proactively partnered with retail chains, movie theaters, and schools to provide added security. "It is our humble contribution towards ensuring people can go about their lives without constant fear," Jones states.

IPS's profound impact on the community is undeniable. Initially perceived as a foreign entity, IPS's unwavering dedication during the Woolsey Fire disaster, wherein it donated services worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, changed perceptions. Jones shares, "It was then that people realized our primary goal is to help and protect. Since then, we've been wholeheartedly embraced by the community."

IPS's services are accessible to everyone, regardless of financial standing. With plans starting as low as $3 to $10 a day, IPS makes it affordable for everyone to have peace of mind. Jones explains, "Whether you're a high-profile CEO or an ordinary citizen, we believe everyone deserves the best level of protection."

In a world that is fraught with uncertainty, IPS is there to make sure everyone can sleep a little easier. You can reach out to International Protective Service by phone or visit their website for more information. n

Grillin' & Chillin'

Food, friends, and fun on a sunny day make for the ideal backyard barbecue. Summer is undoubtedly the perfect time for gathering friends and family together, rolling out the grill, and enjoying an afternoon outdoors. From preparing the menu to setting a fun atmosphere for your guests, here are some tips to make your next backyard bash a success.

MAKE IT A BACKYARD VACATION

Put a spin on the classic barbecue and transport your guests to a faraway place. Think of a theme, like a Hawaiian luau complete with beach-themed decor. Tailor your menu to match. In Spain, a barbecue isn’t complete without paella cooking over fire, while New Orleans is known for their shrimp boils. The possibilities are endless.

2 BE BBQ READY

Prep as much as possible beforehand. Not only does this make the cooking process much easier, but it also makes a world of a difference in the enjoyment for all and allows you to spend more time with your guests. Clean your grill, set up tables and seating, marinate meat, and assemble side dishes in advance.

3 LIGHT UP THE EVENING

Pull out the solar-powered tiki torches or string bistro lights with automatic timers to set a festive mood and avoid scrambling to turn on lights once the sun starts to set. Add dual-purpose citronella candles for a touch of ambiance and to ward off pests and spark up the fire pit for warmth and a round of s’mores.

RELAX WITH REFRESHMENTS

Beer is a quintessential drink of choice at many backyard parties. Large metal tubs are aesthetically pleasing and make the perfect vessels to hold an assortment of brews and lots of ice. Pre-mix large pitchers of margaritas for another self-serve option. And don’t forget bottled water to stay hydrated!

5 HAVE SOME FUN AND GAMES

Set up yard games everyone can enjoy, like horseshoes, cornhole, or croquet. Giant Jenga or Connect Four games are always a hit and bring a bit of nostalgia and friendly competition to the party. If you have a pool, throw some floaties in the water and make sure there are plenty of towels and sunscreen available.

The fun threehour extravaganza was hosted by Caruso, and all proceeds go to supporting Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff departments. Visitors sampled from three different food trucks and specially selected small bites and refreshments from some of the most popular restaurants at The Commons. Younger participants enjoyed face painting, balloon animals, and a special visit by Snoopy, while the grown-up Commonsgoers explored the beer and wine garden opened for the occasion. The chance to climb aboard a bright-red L.A. County fire truck capped off a memorable Saturday afternoon of family, friends, food, and fun at The Commons.

MONARCHS GYM

Monarchs is a leader in children’s physical fitness instruction, inspiring dynamic kids to learn, grow, and succeed while having fun—whether learning gymnastics, tumbling, cheerleading, participating in camp, or celebrating at a birthday party. We had the pleasure of asking the team at Monarchs a few questions.

What do you offer for summer?

Monarchs offers a fun and inspiring summer program. For ages 3 to 14, we have full- and half-day options in our main gymnastics camp (with an extended half hour for drop-off and two hours of aftercare.) In our parkour gym, we have camps for ages 6 to 8 and 8+ which include three hours of flipping, jumping, climbing, different stations, and lots of fun.

140 Calabasas style
Photography by Marvin Steindler
From tumbling to parkour, there's fun for everyone!

Is the summer program a flexible schedule?

We love giving parents the option to decide on any given day that “today is a Monarchs Camp Day.” It makes planning easy and helps busy parents in a pinch. Also, campers can avoid camp fatigue. It’s really a lifesaver during the summer, and you never lose out on a bought camp day this way.

What is the goal of the Monarchs summer camp?

Our motto is to inspire dynamic kids through FUN. Yes, kids do learn a ton and they’re so physically active the entire time, but they would never know that they were learning because we make it outrageously fun for everyone.

What makes Monarchs Gym so special?

With 14,000 square feet in each location, it’s hard not to be entertained constantly. Our camp is unique in that the curriculum changes frequently enough during the day that campers remember the schedule and yet are constantly onto something else that’s exciting to them. We just keep the good times rolling.

Do you have any last comments about the program?

Whether you want your child to learn in a curriculumbased class or intensive camp or have some fun at main gym camp, open play, or parents’ night out, Monarchs has such a wide program offering, and we really encourage everyone to try it out and see why everyone chooses us for their gymnastics and tumbling needs.

Calabasas Swimmer Makes a Splash

Olivia Friedman, a sophomore at de Toledo High School, accomplished a feat no other female swimmer in the high school’s history ever had before when she recently took home two medals at the CIF-Southern Section Swimming Championships—placing seventh in the 100-yard backstroke and eighth in the 200-yard individual medley, competing with over 140 female athletes in the division. Olivia began her swimming career a little later than one might expect of a top-tier athlete, starting in fifth grade while attending Viewpoint School. Her unmatched determination and hard work enabled her success as her abilities quickly caught up and even surpassed her teammates.

When the pandemic hit, Olivia’s discipline became even more focused as she swam in her backyard pool tied to a bungee cord and holding a weighted ball while her coach watched via Zoom. She also trained with former Olympic gold medalist Mike Alexandrov in Marina del Rey several days a week at 5:30 a.m. before logging into school remotely, never missing class time while her mother drove her back to Calabasas. Olivia currently trains with CLASS Aquatics out of Oaks Christian School.

“Swimming has given me the foundation to thrive as a student athlete and leader and to serve my community,” shares Olivia, who received the de Toledo High School Presidential Award in 2022 for her community service hours and has met the requirements to receive the prestigious award again in 2023.

Olivia is a member of the National Honor Society and a certified lifeguard through the American Red Cross. She hopes to further her swimming career in college, continuing to grow as an athlete and person. n

LVUSD STUDENTS — Charged Up for Battery Recycling —

Five years ago, three LVUSD students—Daniel Oroszlan, Eli Rubel, and Aiden Rubel— recognized the potential harm that discarded batteries could cause the environment and created a nonprofit organization, the Student Battery Recycling Company, taking charge to make a positive impact on the Calabasas community.

Since its inception, the organization has collected and recycled over 500 pounds of batteries, making a significant contribution to Calabasas’ environmental sustainability. It continues to expand its reach to nearby towns, with the three founders working tirelessly to raise awareness about the importance of recycling batteries. Daniel, Eli, and Aiden also

set up numerous collection points throughout the Las Virgenes Unified School District, enabling families to dispose of their batteries easily and responsibly. In celebration of this year’s Earth Day, the Student Battery Recycling Company called on every family in the community to recycle their batteries responsibly using one of the designated collection points.

The boys have received widespread recognition for their efforts, including a personal letter of encouragement from one of the Calabasas City Council members. The continued success of the students’ organization is attributed not only to the hard work and dedication of the inspiring young founders but also the longstanding support of local LVUSD families and the surrounding communities. n

WHAT'S IN YOUR Sunscreen?

As the weather grows warmer, we spend even more time outside soaking up the rays. While the sun’s harmful UV rays affect us all year round, they’re especially powerful during the summer months. Now is the perfect time to choose the best sunscreen to protect you and your family.

All sunscreens are not alike

If your family enjoys swimming and watersports, find a waterresistant formula. Dive a little deeper to learn what chemicals go into these products. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) offers a Guide to Safer Sunscreens on their website (ewg.org). They note that only one out of four sunscreens that offer sun protection factor (SPF) doesn’t contain unhealthy chemicals, such as oxybenzone, a derivative of benzophenone. While these absorb harmful UVA ultraviolet rays, they may also cause skin reactions. They might also affect thyroid hormones and kidney function, lower testosterone levels, and disrupt normal hormonal activity, which is especially harmful for growing children.

Mineral versus chemical sunscreens

Mineral sunscreens employ natural ingredients, such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which block UV rays from penetrating the skin. These mineral sunscreens gain the seal of approval from both the FDA and EWG. Chemical sunscreens

that contain ingredients like oxybenzone or retinyl palmitate, however, have recently come under more scrutiny. Chemicals, such as benzophenones, cinnamates, dibenzoylmethanes, and PABA, as well as added fragrances and preservatives, can often cause unwanted reactions. You may want to test your sunscreen first to make sure you or your children aren’t allergic.

Other factors to consider

The most important consideration when choosing a sunscreen is to find one you’ll actually use. Make sure you like the smell, SPF level, and format, whether stick, spray, or lotion. Generally, the fairer your skin, the higher your ideal SPF. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends all kids wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. They also suggest using a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Both of these rays can cause sunburn, skin cancer, eye damage, and more, even on cloudy days.

When applying sunscreen, generously coat all the usual areas, as well as ears, neck, shoulders, hands, and feet. If your sunscreen isn’t waterproof, reapply it every two hours. Sunscreen provides one of the simplest ways to protect you and your kids from sun damage to ensure a healthy, happy summer for the whole family. n

Does my teen and preteen need a meningococcal vaccination?

Preteens and teens are at increased risk for meningococcal disease, which is an uncommon but serious illness. Meningococcal disease can be devastating and often—and unexpectedly—strikes otherwise healthy people. Although meningococcal disease is uncommon, teens and young adults 16 through 23 years old are at increased risk. Meningococcal bacteria can cause severe, even deadly, infections like meningitis (an infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord), or bacteremia or septicemia (bloodstream infections). Sadly, about one in five people who survive a meningococcal infection have permanent disabilities.

The CDC recommends meningococcal vaccination for all preteens and teens. All 11 to 12 year olds should receive a single dose of a meningococcal conjugate (MenACWY) vaccine. Since protection decreases over time, the CDC recommends a booster dose at age 16. The booster dose provides protection during the ages when teens are at highest risk for meningococcal disease. Teens and young adults (ages 16 through 23) also may receive a serogroup B meningococcal (MenB) vaccine. The preferred age to get the MenB vaccine is 16 through 18 years old. Talk with your teen’s doctor about meningococcal vaccination to help protect your child’s health. Keep in mind that many colleges require proof of MenACWY vaccination as well. Being vaccinated before college is especially important because meningitis symptoms mimic the flu. Many college students may think they have the flu and not seek medical help until it is too late. Meningitis is also highly contagious and can spread rapidly in close living quarters like college dormitories.

SOMETHING YELLOW 9 TH ANNUAL POKER TOURNAMENT

The Kevin Cordasco Foundation: Something Yellow’s 9th Annual Poker Tournament was a great evening for the foundation that supports the heroes of childhood cancer. Nearly 90 poker players participated at the event held on May 17 at the American Legion Hall in Woodland Hills, with players enjoying the retro bar and the newly created Loser Lounge to watch the final table. After a long battle, the final table was whittled down to four players: Scott Wetzel, Todd Perry, Chris Fulton, and Mike Geringer. Perry and Geringer were the last two standing and decided to split the championship belt. The poker tournament marked the first event of the foundation’s 10th-anniversary year. The Kevin Cordasco Foundation: Something Yellow is committed to helping raise funds and awareness for children and teens going through cancer and to supporting their families, the hospital, the caregivers, and the researchers developing new treatments and cures.

WORLD OF WINE

Wines of Monterey County

Sure Monterey County has a spectacular coastline and is home to picturesque towns like Carmel-by-the-Sea, the rugged Big Sur shore, and the tony 17-mile drive, but in the past couple of decades, the county has drawn acclaim for its distinctive wines as well.

Monterey County sits at the most northern part of the larger Central Coast AVA that stretches from the southern end of San Francisco down to the southern part of Santa Barbara County.

In this wine region, framed by the Gabilan and Santa Lucia mountain ranges, weather patterns vary dramatically from the cooler, fog-shrouded northern part to the warmer southern end that meets the San Luis Obispo County line. These varied micro-climates combined with diverse soil types offer the perfect landscape for some 53 wine-grape varieties, with Chardonnay leading the pack by making up half of the county’s total output.

Other popular varieties include Bordeaux and Rhône-style wine grapes; Portuguese varieties, such as Tinta Cao and Touriga Nacional; Italian varieties, such as Sangiovese and Nebbiolo; the popular Spanish Tempranillo and Graciano grapes; and Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Santa Lucia Highlands appellation.

AVAs

Of the 10 AVAs (American viticultural areas), Monterey is the largest, and Chalone and Carmel Valley are the smallest. The latter two were the first to

158 Calabasas style

be granted AVA status in 1982. In 1984, the Monterey AVA was established, covering 40,000 acres.

Covering much of the entire length of the county, Monterey offers a range of climate patterns and, therefore, diversity in grape varieties. The cooler northern part is where Riesling and Pinot Noir thrive; the warmer southern part is well suited to Bordeaux and Rhône-style varieties and Zinfandel.

Other AVAs, such as Arroyo Seco, San Bernabe, and San Lucas, are also noted for Bordeaux and Rhône-style varieties. Hames Valley and S an Antonio Valley, both tucked in the region’s southernmost part, are known for Spanish and Portuguese grape varieties. The newest area to be granted AVA status is Gabilan Mountains , which straddles both Monterey and San Benito counties.

While all the AVAs reflect their distinctive characteristics, it’s Santa Lucia Highlands (SLH), established in 1991, which has made its mark as the county’s prime Pinot Noir and Chardonnay zone.

Santa Lucia Highlands (SLH)

This unique wind-swept environment, which allows for a longer hang time on the vines, thus deepening the flavor in grapes, sits atop terraces of its namesake mountain ridge that stretches from Monterey Bay to Salinas River Valley. Covering 22,000 acres, SLH is home to some 50 vineyards tucked around mesas and arroyos while others are perched on hillsides scaling up to 2,300 feet in elevation.

Wineries are few, lined along the River Road Trail, and many are not open to the public. With an air of bespoke ambiance, this region is off the beaten track, home to a handful of multigenerational Swiss-Italian farming families dating back to the 1800s.

The SLH fruit has an iconic status with winemakers across California and Oregon who crave access to such pedigreed continued on page 160

Calabasas style 159

vineyards as Pisoni, Rosella’s, Sierra Mar, Double L, Hahn Hook, Tondre, McIntyre, and Boekenoogen— vineyards synonymous with SLH appellation’s artisanal wines.

Among the pioneers, Gary Pisoni has made a mark by establishing three prized vineyards—Pisoni, Sobranes, and Garys’ (the latter planted with his childhood friend and another local pioneer, Gary Franscioni). Driving up to the rugged and sprawling 288-acre Pisoni ranch, I met with Gary’s son, Mark Pisoni. “When my dad planted grapes here 40 years ago, no one knew about him or Pinot Noir or SLH,” Pisoni recalls. Gary began as a home winemaker, with initial plantings of Pinot Noir and Bordeaux varieties, and fared well selling his wines at local fairs. “But it was a struggle to get people to try Pinot Noir from our area,” he adds.

Of the handful of six varieties planted at the time, Pinot proved to be the best, but selling the fruit was tough. Pisoni eventually sold it to larger wineries who blended it into a California red. It wasn’t until the early 1990s, when noted winemaker Adam Tolmach, founder of Ojai Vineyards, began making Pinot from Pisoni vineyards, that Pisoni got media attention. And then, from that time on, not just Pisoni vineyards but also SLH garnered the attention of consumers and trade alike.

To savor Monterey’s diversity of wines, the tasting experience for visitors is designed in user-friendly enclaves and routes:

Route 1—The Coastal Connoisseur: Carmel-by-the-Sea & Monterey

Some 18 tasting rooms are tucked along the flower-lined streets of coastal Carmel. Among them are Galante Cellars, Kori, Windy Oaks, Talbott, and Wrath. Another half dozen in Monterey include Puma Road, Comanche Cellars, and Albatross Ridge.

Route 2—Country Charm: Carmel Valley

The valley exudes a rustic charm with cafes and two dozen tasting rooms. Among them are Bernardus, Georis, Joyce, Seabold, and Cowgirl.

Route 3—Vineyard Venture: Monterey Wine Country Trail

The trail goes along the scenic River Road flanked by SLH vineyards. Over a dozen wineries and tasting rooms include McIntyre, Odonata, Hahn, CRÜ, and Pessagno. n

The popular Yummie Culinary Competition returned for its 14th year at Casa Pacifica’s 30th Annual Angels Wine, Food & Brew Festival on June 4 on the campus of CSU Channel Islands in Ventura County. AMERICANA Zin Bistro

Celebrate Summer Lakeside

There’s no better way to relax with friends and family than sharing a wonderful meal overlooking the sparkling lake at Zin Bistro Americana in Westlake Village. From their all-day 4th of July event featuring lakeside dining and live music to their festive Labor Day brunch, Zin Bistro provides the perfect atmosphere to spend a warm summer’s day soaking in some of the area’s coolest vibes while sipping a refreshing cocktail and sampling some of SoCal’s most delicious dishes.

Growing up in Westlake Village, Zin Bistro’s owner, Rouz Yazdanyar, hoped to someday own a spot on the lake. When the location opened up in 2006, he pursued his dream, creating a friendly eatery where everyone feels like family. Chef Juan Cruz continues to evolve the bistro’s mouthwatering menu, featuring such succulent fare as refreshing lobster cobb salad, piled high with rich Maine lobster meat, egg, cucumbers, tomatoes, avocado, asparagus, and blue cheese crumbles atop a trio of lettuce and spinach, tossed with piquant champagne Dijon dressing. Landlubbers can feast on a flavorful rack of lamb, juicy filet mignon, chicken cordon bleu, or the eatery’s special Zin burger, made from the finest Kobe beef and covered with pepper jack cheese, crisp onions, sherry dressing, and mayo.

Guests can indulge a sweet tooth with a light trio of sorbet, fluffy cotton candy, or apple tarte tatin or go full throttle with a Zin banana split, slice of pecan pie à la mode, or ultimate

Death by Chocolate cake served warm with vanilla bean ice cream. Desserts can be topped off with a decadent Zin cappuccino with Baileys, frangelico, and cappuccino or a black truffle latte featuring rich Godiva dark chocolate, Seagrams vodka, and café latte.

Zin’s ever-popular Sunday brunch, held lakeside from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., includes the choice of build-your-own omelets as well as assorted seafood, Mexican dishes, Norwegian options with smoked salmon, and protein-packed omelets, crab cake benedicts, a hearty “Hangover” with steak, potatoes and eggs, and more. Those watching their waists might consider the lighter Zin Spa with fried eggs, asparagus, pancetta, and breadcrumbs atop organic quinoa. Guests can try the Cuban sandwich, overflowing with carnitas, ham, black bean, chipotle, provolone cheese, pickles, ciabatta, and red onions. Or they can head south of the border with a wet breakfast burrito stuffed with eggs, ham, bacon, tomatoes, onions, peppers, and pepper jack cheese and topped with tangy homemade tomatillo sauce.

Just as the Zinfandel grape is distinctively American, Zin Bistro Americana offers a menu that reflects the nostalgic cuisine and melting pot of cultures that makes America unique.

Guests enjoy live music on the lake every Thursday through Sunday from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., plus a daily happy hour from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Zin believes that the “best dishes are crafted to reflect the beauty of life, art, and the community.” So, whether you’re hungering for a romantic dinner à deux or festive summer soirée with 20 of your closest friends, Zin Bistro provides the perfect spot to relax, recharge, and toast life in sunny Southern California seven days a week from 11:00 a.m. lakeside in Westlake Village. n
