Local parents share their favourite tips for making life just that little bit easier.

Top Tip Goodbye Bedwetting Blues With four kids, I’ve had my share of wet beds in the middle of the night. Having to put find new sheets and put them on the bed, in the dark, while I was half asleep was a nightmare. So I purchased two waterproof mattress protectors and two sets of sheets for each of my children’s beds. I made up the beds with both sets, so that in the middle of the night, if one of my kids wet their bed, I could simply strip the top set (sheet and mattress protector) and the second set was all ready to go. No more having to re-make a bed in the middle of the night and everyone gets back to sleep much quicker. Karen from North Cairns

Television Free Last year I decided to cut out TV for my children during the week. When they asked to watch TV, I would take them outside and fill up a plastic tub with water and bubbles, and give them kitchen whisks, cups, funnels etc for them to play with. That would keep them occupied for at least an hour. Over time they stopped asking for TV, and are happy to play outside instead. Heidi from Trinity Beach

Slow Cooker Buy a slow cooker and a good slow cooker recipe book, and learn how to use it! I create beautiful soups, casseroles, curries, roasts, risotto and desserts in the slow cooker, and it saves me time, and money and my sanity come dinnertime! Stacey from Ravenshoe

Household Chores Get the kids involved in household chores as soon as you can. Washing up, clearing or setting the table, sweeping floors etc. They love to be involved when young and if you keep it fun and not ‘military style’ they will always know to help out. Lyndy

Sunsafe Always have a hat handy - put one in the car, one in the pram and one in your baby’s tote bag. This way you’re never stuck without sun protection if you decide on a quick playground stop! Melanie from Redlynch

Meal Planning Write up 5 weeks (or more) worth of meals, 7 meals per week. Label them ‘Week 1’, ‘Week 2’ ... and laminate each list of meals to the fridge as a reminder of what is on that week. With 5 plus weeks worth of meals it isn’t too repetitive. Nyssa

My Midwife WORDS Bec Waqanikalou PHOTO Sweet Beginnings Photography

The term ‘midwife’ was first recorded around 1300. Wife meant ’woman’ while mid is a preposition, meaning ’together with’. Thus a midwife was literally ’with woman’. Having a baby is an exciting, yet daunting time for most women. There are so many unknowns regarding pregnancy, labour, birth and early parenthood. Wouldn’t it be amazing to have someone on call, 24/7, to answer any questions, allay your concerns and to support and educate you along the way? Midwives are experts in normal birth and are trained to support and assist women to birth their baby/ies, as well as specialising in postpartum and well-woman healthcare. They are educated and trained to recognize the variations of normal progression of labor

8

Cairns Parenting Companion Spring 2013

and to deal with deviations from normal, to discern and intervene in high-risk situations. Continuity of Midwifery Care (having a known primary midwife) is the gold standard of care for pregnant women and allows for the opportunity to build a relationship based on mutual trust and respect. In this relationship, the midwife works in partnership with women, helping them to make informed choices, empowering them to be in total control of their pregnancy and birth journey. There is overwhelming evidence that continuity of care with a

midwife can shorten labour, decrease caesarean and intervention rates and decrease the need for analgesia in labour, resulting in lower mortality and morbidity. Continuity of care also carries into the post birth period and can increase the success of breastfeeding and decrease the rate of postnatal depression. Currently, there are exciting discussions around the development of the Midwifery Group Practice (meaning women will have access continuity of carer with a midwife) at Cairns Base Hospital.

ME… (Sophie) In 2011, I had my first son through the Midwifery Unit at Mareeba Hospital. I am also currently due to have my second child* there as well. During both pregnancies, birth and the postnatal period (up to 8 weeks) I have been with the same caring, compassionate midwife, which has provided me with a range of positive benefits. Steph and I have founded a strong, trusting, easy-going relationship. Appointments are relaxed, yet professional; encompassing general catch ups, a couple of laughs and overall, a medically thorough antenatal or postnatal visit. This relationship has provided me with a strong sense of wellbeing and the opportunity to openly and freely discuss any worries or concerns, birthing choices or postnatal parenting techniques. I believe the most beneficial aspect of having your own midwife is during labour and birthing. Having access to my own midwife’s personal mobile number and feeling comfortable about being able to call at anytime (night or day) was reassuring. During labour, I completely trusted her professional judgement and felt at ease when she needed to consult with a medical practitioner, knowing that she would not medically intervene unless absolutely necessary. Therefore, I felt more relaxed and able to concentrate on the task at hand. Throughout my pregnancies, having a close relationship with my midwife provided me with access to advice and support from a carer I respected and trusted who valued my choices, ideas and beliefs. Her care was wonderful, holistic and, most of all, genuinely caring. *Sophie gave birth to son Jesse on the 28th July at 7.06pm, weighing 3420gms, with the support of her partner Tim and midwife, Steph.

MIDWIFE….(Steph) I became a midwife in 1985, after completing my study at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Brisbane and have since worked in a number of rural maternity units. Midwifery is my vocation. It’s not for everyone, there are definitely some challenges with the job, but for me, the rewards do outweigh these. I now enjoy working in the Mareeba Maternity Unit as we offer Continuity of Carer for the women. This means that I get to work with a caseload of woman and I am their primary carer. I meet each woman early in her pregnancy and am able to build a relationship, which is so beneficial for both of us. Not only can I ensure that she and the baby are given consistent care and advice, I am able to support her wishes and preferences during labour and birth as well. Even though I do get calls at odd times, I have the satisfaction of being able to support woman and their families and I do enjoy it. Medical research shows that women who have one-to-one care have better outcomes and in Mareeba, we are above the state average on many key indicators for maternity.

Back into Shape!

You only have to pick up the latest tabloid or fashion magazine to see the headlines; “How I got my body back in just 4 months!” or “My Post-Baby weight loss regime, REVEALED”! It’s seems to be a never-ending race for celebrities to get their pre-baby shape back. Realistically for most of us, without the help of personal trainers and

private chefs, it can take some months or even years before we feel confident enough to once again don the bikini in public and reach our pre-baby weight. For three local mums, ‘shaping up’ the healthy way has not only brought them a real sense of achievement but a new way of healthy living and possibly a new career choice.

From Chubby Mummy to Competitive Body Builder My name is Tracey and I am a mother of two gorgeous girls, Ella 7 and Luca 5, and have been happily married to Dan for 8 years.

Kim is a personal trainer, nutritionist and a successful Figure Body Builder, who started me on one of the best journeys of my life.

After the birth of my youngest, I remember standing on some digital scales at The Good Guys for a laugh but not finding the readout telling me I weighed 98.3 kg funny at all. The words morbidly obese rumbled around my mind and I knew that it was time to get real about my low self-esteem and identity. I did not belong in that body and it was time for a change.

People often have the perception that body building means starvation diets and hours upon hours of training. The truth is, we eat lots of really fresh and nutritious food and train for five sessions per week from 1 to 1.5 hours per session.

The very next day I had my eldest daughter take a picture of me and vowed to get fit. I started walking and then jogging. Eventually I joined a gym and participated in group fitness with vigor. I also started a food diary to keep track of my calorie intake. After losing 30 kg over 3 years, I really wanted to step up my exercise routine and heard about Body Building. I did my homework and stalked many of the local competitors by following their progress on Facebook and their blogs. Eventually, I found the courage to contact my now trainer and friend, Kim Cardwell.

WORDS Tracey Dujora

Since beginning my body building journey, I have competed in two competitions and was pleased to pick up a third in the Masters division in our local NPBB competition last May. The beauty of this sport is that the food is so healthy and there is so much of it! The benefits of lifting are endless and I really love what weight training has done to my body, mind and spirit. My days are super busy. I train most mornings at 4:30am to fit in a workout before the day begins with school and other commitments. For anyone who wants to shape up, lose some weight or just get active, set small goals and then start ticking them off. Don’t give up.

Fitness became my career My name is Abi Gardiner. I am 31 years old and a proud mum of three beautiful kids, Ethan 13, Noah 8 and Rahli 3. I have always wanted a job that I could wake up every day and look forward to, but being a mum, my priorities changed and my dream got lost in the routine of daily life and the need to earn money to raise my family. As I approached 30, I felt a little lost and started thinking about what I really wanted to do with my life. Growing up, I had wanted to study fitness or outdoor sports and recreation, so I started researching what courses were available. It was quite clear that the fitness course at the TAFE was exactly what I wanted. I had an interview with Sonya Barber and applied for the course. Far North Queensland TAFE offers so much more than just a course. The opportunities, support and practical experiences that are offered are amazing and completely changed my life. family life and I completed both Certificate III and IV in 2012. I had the best time and met some great people as I started my exciting new career! While studying at TAFE, I met Simone Kay from Fitness Form and Function and I am now working for her. Since completing the course, I have worked with ViPR, conducted 12 week challenges, and run Body Balance, Mumbalates boxing and water fitness classes. In between classes, I offer also personal training and I have recently launched our new fitness class for mothers and toddlers.

Want a better job? Think TAFE for training

I love working in the fitness industry and the best part is that I have the flexibility to work around my kids and still keep up with their needs. Abi has just commenced her new course: Tough Mama for Mums and Toddlers. For more information, call 0409 260 230.

The Blessing Way

There is a beautiful pre-birth tradition, which is becoming more popular as word spreads: a Blessing Way, or a Mother’s Blessing - a rite of passage into motherhood. A Blessing Way is a tradition originating from the Navajo Native Americans, but in Western culture the ceremony is often called a Mother’s Blessing. The focus of a Mother’s Blessing is to celebrate and honour a woman’s journey through birth and into motherhood with her closest female friends. Unlike a baby shower, which is focused more around the baby, a Mother’s Blessing is focused on the mother and making her feel loved and nurtured. I had heard about a Mother’s Blessing years ago through a friend and thought it was a beautiful way to celebrate becoming a mother. So when I was pregnant with my 3rd baby, I decided to plan my blessing with the help of my two Doulas.

Before the guests arrived, I had my belly cast done by two of my friends while music played, then one by one guests arrived, gifting me with their flowers and freshly made food. We filled my kitchen with so much laughter before we had even begun. I had previously set up an area outside on the patio where we were to take cushions and sit in a circle together. Once we were seated, we lay out teas and food. There are no rules on how to set up a Mother’s Blessing; it can be done anywhere and set up any way you like.

There are some wonderful ideas I found which could be incorporated into a Mother’s Blessing. These include henna body art, belly casting, writing positive affirmations, head and foot massage, a string ceremony and the giving of birth beads. I asked my guests to bring along flowers to decorate my home, a feather, which held personal meaning to me, and a bead in which would be threaded onto a necklace. I also asked my guests to bring along a plate of nutritious food to share and a story about another culture’s tradition surrounding pregnancy, birth and motherhood.

After we had all eaten, the women went around the circle giving me blessings for a safe and wonderful birth. To hear this really made me feel supported and positive for my upcoming birth. After the blessings had finished, they all presented me with a bead which was threaded onto a necklace that I planned to either wear in labour or hang somewhere in view, as a way to feel support from each friend who contributed. The necklace could then be held onto forever, or even passed on to the child. While I was pampered with a foot and head massage, everyone shared a

story about traditions in other cultures surrounding birth and new motherhood, which was very intriguing and sparked a great discussion on everyone’s positive experiences. Essentially, a pregnant woman wants to hear the positives that surround birth and becoming a mother, and a Mother’s Blessing is a great way to help the mother feel positive and supported in the change, which is about to take place. In concluding my Mother’s Blessing, we all tied a piece of red cotton around our wrists and agreed that when labour started for me, or just after the birth, we would cut the cotton in celebration. As guests left, my sister, daughter and a friend sat around me decorating my feet with henna, which was a nice reminder of the day. A Mother’s Blessing is a great way to help a woman feel great about her transition into motherhood. There is no wrong or right when it comes to what you choose to incorporate on the day and there is no set order or agenda. For more information on hosting a Mother’s Blessing, the Internet provides many valuable tips on how you can make for a wonderful day.

Arrival

Looking back at the birth of my first child I’m saddened to say I was clueless about the choices available in the way I birthed my baby so, when I fell pregnant with my second, I knew there was so much I wanted to change this time around. One thing that I knew right from the start was that I wanted a drug free birth and after doing some research I discovered that hiring a doula could help me in getting that birth that I wanted, so I did just that. My doula opened up a whole new world to me in which I chose to try hypnobirthing, delayed cord clamping and birth photography. The 23rd of September 2012 (my due date) rolled around and, as most women by 40 weeks, I was absolutely over being pregnant, so as a way to try and help move things along I went for an evening walk and walked a few laps around the sandpit at our local park followed by some squats. By 7pm I had started contracting but I knew I needed some rest so I went straight to bed, only to become so uncomfortable by 9pm that I went for a warm shower where I sat, not wanting to move. I reached for my phone and called my dad asking him to come look after my 2 year old, I then called my mum to warn her as she had a 2 hour drive to make to be with me. When I finally climbed out of the shower I began timing

my contractions, they were not regular but they were strong enough that I decided to call my doula. When she arrived she guided me through my contractions, gave me the iPod with the Hypnosis tracks on it to listen to and continued timing my contractions. By 11.30 my mum had arrived and although my contractions still weren’t regular they were long and strong enough that we decided to go to hospital even though I was still adamant that this wasn’t the real deal and we would be sent home. My photographer who is also a doula met us at the hospital. My midwife instantly admitted me and started running a bath for me. This was the real deal! Whilst waiting for the tub to fill I went for a shower where I bent over a birthing ball under the hot water with both my mum and doulas massaging every inch of my body. This was heaven! Once the tub was full I hopped in even though I had no prior intentions of having a water-birth, it was amazing and there was no way that I was moving to birth my baby. At 1am only an hour after getting to the hospital I began to push. On the second push I felt my waters break and at 2.07am my beautiful baby girl was born in the water surrounded by a sisterhood of amazing women. It was peaceful, it was blissful and I couldn’t have asked for a better birth.

Have you had a check-up lately? Pap smear, prostrate check, mammogram, skin check, these are just some of the check-ups that might just save your life. For Carolyn Rutter, who lost her father to Melanoma in 2010, encouraging the men in your life to look after themselves is now her priority. “Dad was like many men – bullet proof, but not cancer proof. If only he had made regular check-ups his norm earlier in his life, we may have him still with us today”. Blue September is all about awareness for men’s health. Even though less than half of the Australian population are men, more men than woman are diagnosed with cancer each year. It’s time to remind the guys that ‘they aren’t bullet-proof’ and it’s okay to see a doctor if that pain when you pee; or the mysterious lump in your testicle, just won’t go away.

18

Cairns Parenting Companion Spring 2013

Three medical practices ( McLeod St Medical Centre, The Redlynch Medical Centre and Southcare Woree) are offering bulk-billed medical check-ups for men during September by mentioning Blue September when making an appointment. And men aren’t the only ones not looking after themselves. Mothers are notorious for putting themselves last. October 28 is Pink Ribbon Day, but statistics show that there are a lot of women who are not having regular checks. According to Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift, the number of women participating in essential checks, such as pap smears, has been trending downward since 2008. “Regular pap smears are currently the best protection against cervical cancer,” Ms Clift said. “Through population screening at regular intervals, the pap smear test has the potential to reduce up

to 90 per cent of cervical cancer cases in Australia.” Family Planning Queensland (FPQ), a not for profit, nongovernment organisation providing sexual and reproductive health and education services throughout Queensland has also found that “the majority of women (three out of four) who develop cervical cancer have not had a regular Pap smear.” Similarly, Rowena Cramp, from Breastscreen Australia, stresses that “a breastscreen can pick up an abnormality the size of a pin prick, before it can be seen or felt. All women aged 40 years and over are eligible for a free breastscreen with BreastScreen Queensland every 2 years. Women aged 50-69 are strongly recommended to have a breastscreen with the average age of first diagnosis being 60. The aim of the program is to

Carolyn Rutter lost her father to Melanoma in 2010, encouraging men to look after themselves is now her priority. find breast cancer at its earliest stages for better treatment options and outcomes.” The Cancer Council Queensland stresses that “most cancers, if diagnosed early, can be effectively treated. And many cancers, when diagnosed early, can be controlled before they spread.” “We are all familiar with the recommendations for healthy living. We all know smoking is a lethal hazard, screening is essential, sun protection is not just for kids, and eating well and being active is good for us,” Ms Clift said. “Research suggests roughly 140 cancer deaths in Far North Queensland alone each year could be prevented through healthy diet and lifestyle, such as exercising regularly and avoiding alcohol.” While most of us are familiar with these preventative measures, none of them replace the need for regular checks by a trained professional.

“It is also important for women of all ages to be breast aware, to get to know the normal look and feel of your breasts. If you notice changes it is important to speak to your doctor. Breast cancer screening and follow up tests if required are free and do not require a doctor’s referral”, says Ms Cramp. Similarly, with pap smears, “even if women have received the Gardasil vaccination, it is still essential they participate in recommended screening. The HPV vaccine does not protect against all types of cancer-causing HPV, so pap smear tests continue to be important.” Talk to your GP regularly about necessary check-ups and screenings, and consult your doctor if you notice any changes in your overall health. So when was your last check-up? Spring 2013 Cairns Parenting Companion

When expecting a baby, the thought of giving birth can be overwhelming, but our bodies really are amazing and here are 5 peculiar snippets about birth that you may not have heard about. The purple line When in labour, an internal examination to determine cervical dilation can range from uncomfortable to intrusive, to downright painful. However, there is a theory that while in labour, a red, purple, or dark line appears between the pregnant woman’s buttocks and is an indicator of cervical dilation. In 1990, a study revealed that in 89% of women observed, the line appeared and was absent in only 10% (Hobbs, 1998). As the baby descends through the birth canal, a line appears from the anus to the top of the cleft of the bottom cheeks. When the line reaches the cleft, it is believed that second stage labour is near, without the need for internal exams to check dilation.

Orgasms during childbirth While we generally associate childbirth with pain, some woman report feeling waves of euphoria, similar to that of an orgasm. Anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that the pressure on the birth canal, stimulation of the cervix, the vagina and the clitoris, as well as contractions of the uterus can result in the woman feeling pleasure, instead of pain during childbirth. Scientists believe that this may actually have a positive effect on the delivery of the baby. An orgasm releases the hormone oxytocin, which causes the uterus to contract during labour. The hormone also reduces anxiety and promotes feelings of security, helping the mother feel calm.

Horse lips It is actually a good thing to make noise during labour. There is evidence to suggest that vocalising can actually help cervical dilation. The noises to focus on making include humming with a relaxed jaw, horse lips, oohing, aahing, uuhing, or singing. These noises have the added benefit of helping to control breathing and dealing with the pain.

20

Cairns Parenting Companion Spring 2013

It is worth remembering that low tones are more beneficial than high pitched ‘screaming’ during labour as screaming expels energy, rather than allowing it to be used to push.

Twins can be

born days apart While multiples are generally born a few minutes apart, there have been instances when twins have been born days apart – and not just because they were born either side of midnight. This is most common with vaginal deliveries when labour may actually stop after the first baby and begin later for the next. There are even studies that suggest that opting for intervention after the first baby may actually be detrimental. There have also been instances when one baby has been born prematurely and labour has been halted in order for the other baby/ babies to continue to grow in the womb. The record is currently 89 days between birthdays for a set of twins.

The due date lie It is widely accepted that pregnancy is 40 weeks long. The due date is eagerly anticipated, but often passes by with no sign of a baby arriving any time soon. This is because the idea of a 40 week gestation is actually based on the idea that a pregnancy lasts 10 lunar months. The problem is that lunar 10 months is actually 295 days, not the 280 days we have come to accept. Calculating gestational length is also based on a 28 day cycle. However, not all women have a 28 day cycle and ovulation does not necessarily occur bang on day 14. This means that the calculated date of conception may be incorrect. Therefore, a normal pregnancy is actually 38-42 weeks gestation, challenging the idea of a baby being considered ‘overdue’ after only 40 weeks.

Every baby is different. But one thing most parents agree on is that teething is a heartbreaking and frustrating period for all involved, especially because our little ones cannot communicate with us. Swollen gums, irritability, restlessness, flushed cheeks, raised temperature, dribbling and mouthing anything in reach are the most common symptoms that your child is teething. There may also be changes in their bowel movements and they may be more prone to nappy rash. However, Community Health nurses stress that symptoms such as fever and diarrhoea are not related to teething. Current research suggests that helping your child apply pressure to their gums is the best way to alleviate the discomfort of teething pain. According to Queensland Health, letting your baby chew objects such as crusts of bread, rusks and teething rings is a good start. They also recommend rubbing your baby’s gums with your finger, or applying teething gel.

We asked five local mums for their tips for dealing with the pain and discomfort of teething.

Mum of two, Alana Bezant from Redlynch What goes into our children’s bodies is of great importance to us, so we investigated homeopathic remedies to relieve the symptoms of teething. We have had success with a complex for them to suck on that contains chamomilla, which is calming; pulsatilla, to help with whinging; belladonna, which helps with fevers; and aconite, to reduce inflammation. We also use amber bead necklaces, frozen fruit to numb the gums (frozen pineapple cores work well), cold wet washers to suck on and teething toys like natural wooden teethers, safe rubbers such as ‘Sophie la Giraffe’ and BPA free refrigerated silicon rings.

Mum of four, Christine Simpson from Redlynch As a mother of four boys aging from 13.5yrs to our new sevenmonth-old baby, I have found teething to come in many forms. We tried many gels, teethers, and Baby Panadol for our first, but nothing worked for him until a health nurse gave us a bottle of ‘Brauer Teething Relief’. It was an absolute Godsend! We have used it for all of our children as well as teething rusks and frozen teething rings. Our fourth has had so much trouble compared to the others, and after much research, we decided to try an amber teething necklace and we think it really does help.

Mum of two, Beverly Vos from Whitfield I’m a mum of two girls and also a nurse, so I’m a big believer in using paracetamol, or occasionally ibuprofen, whenever I think my girls have teething pain. The trouble is, sometimes it can be hard to tell, particularly when babies are as fussy as my first daughter was! I didn’t really notice much relief from numbing gels like Bonjela, but I think they are worth a try. However, I did find teething toys very helpful. The one my girls liked best of all was “Sophie la Giraffe”. They both loved chewing on her for hours! Although Sophie is expensive, if you look after her, I think she’s a worthwhile investment.

Mum of one, Kerry Miller from Forest Gardens We try not to use any harmful, chemical filled products when it comes to our son. So for teething, we looked for natural products. We have two ‘Sophie la Giraffe’ toys and I always keep one in the nappy bag for him to chew on. We also use mesh bag dummies and put cold or frozen fruit inside them. That way, he safely gets extra fruit and some pain relief. Another product we found helpful is ‘Toothease’. We just rub a few drops on his gums before he goes to bed we found that he would sleep longer and not wake up with teething pain.

Mum of two, Yoshie Ohtsu from Cairns When my eldest was teething, I gave her a small rice paddle made from wood, as most teething toys in Japan are made from wood. My youngest daughter, who is 8 months old with two bottom teeth, drools a lot and her gums seem to be itchy. One thing I found to help her was a special toothbrush that can be used from 6 months. It was also bought in Japan and is made from silicone, so it is very gentle for babies. The baby only needs to put it in her mouth and bite. The brush massages her gums and also cleans the new teeth. When I first gave the brush to my daughter, she grabbed it and immediately put it in her mouth. As she chewed, she was smiling and looked very happy. Spring 2013 Cairns Parenting Companion

SIGN LA NGUAGE

Toddler

One of the hardest and most frustrating things about being a parent is not knowing what your small child is trying to communicate when they cry. Fortunately, through the use of baby sign language, pre-verbal children are able to express what they need or want. Sites, like www.australianbabyhands.com, provide resources such as free charts and detailed instructions to help parents teach their child basic signs for hungry, thirsty, mummy, daddy and toilet needs. There are also courses available for parents to learn from experienced instructors how to teach their child the signs. As well as helping parents decipher what their child is trying to tell them an alleviating frustration, there are also long-term benefits of teaching a child to communicate through gestures. According to Australian Baby Hands, helping pre-verbal children communicate can increase self-confidence and self-esteem, accelerates the child’s ability to learn to speak, stimulates the brain development, and provides insight into what the child wants and needs, increasing their bond with their parent. Other advantages of using baby sign is that it incorporates the national sign language of Australia – Auslan, ensuring that it is based on an actual method of communication and has a proven record of effectiveness. This also allows children to learn from a young age that people communicate in different ways and encourages them to be receptive to subtle body language cues as they grow. Local mum of three, Rebekah Freeman, has had success with the use of toddler sign language. My husband and I decided to use baby sign language to help take the guess work out of communicating with our children. We only taught them four to six words each,

24

Cairns Parenting Companion Spring 2013

but it was enough to get us through to the talking stage. We taught them the signs for more, finished, drink, eat, up, please, thank you (which they didn’t take to as well as the others) and the head nod and shake for ‘yes’ and ‘no’. We did change some of the actual signs as our children had difficulty making the gestures for some of the words. For example, we changed a two handed sign to a one handed sign and a sign which required fine motor skills to a simpler one. We found this worked well, because we all agreed to the new signs. Using toddler sign language has also been helpful as the children got older to act as a non-verbal reminder for them to use their manners while we are in company. It is especially handy if they are given a gift, we can subtly sign ‘thank-you’ to remind them to be gracious without saying, “Now say ‘Thank You’,” which we feel can sound condescending. While we found that baby sign language helped alleviate the frustrations we all felt while our children were learning to talk, it has also been entertaining. One of the first times our youngest used sign was when I found him eating the dog kibble. I pulled it out of his mouth, removed the bowl and said the customary, ‘No, Yucky’. He then followed me around the house signing, ‘More please,’ until he threw a tantrum in frustration.

“Even before you return to actually working, stay in touch with the indust ry buzz”

‘I’m having a baby!’ I announced at work. After the initial

How to cope with a new world after a hiatus

wave of congratulations had subsided, conversation turned to the inevitable question. ‘Are you planning to return to work?’ asked my colleagues, some with amusement, others in tones more anxious. ‘I don’t really know at this point,’ was my truthful answer. What I did know was that it was going to be an important, serious and potential uncomfortable choice to make, and one that could be life-changing. A year later, as I neared the end of my maternity leave and the manic feeding-changing-sleeping frenzy settled into a regular and relaxed routine with my baby, I decided I wanted my old job back. I was looking forward to meeting colleagues and customers, and being part of all the action again. However, I knew it wasn’t going to be a smooth transition and I wasn’t wrong. Returning to work after a hiatus – be it parental leave, a long holiday or even a period of illness – is fraught with challenges. Sometimes it can feel exactly like starting a new job or joining an altogether different company! ‘What if I don’t fit in with the new team?’ ‘Am I dressed right?’ ‘Do I remember how to do my old job?’ The quandaries can be nerve-wracking.

THE WORLD HAS MOVED ON, YOU NEED TO CATCH UP The playing field changed when you weren’t looking. Colleagues who continued at work know about the hot trends, are aware of new industry ideas and concepts, and have developed new skills. Their personal worth and value has increased by virtue of these small incremental additions to their professional self. They sustain business continuity and know where the organisation stands today. You, on the other hand, are just back from a long break and have a lot of gaps to fill in. In such a situation, it is normal to feel a bit out-of-sorts to begin with. Old projects may have ended and new ones won, old clients may have left and new customers welcomed, even new co-workers’ faces may be peeping out from behind desks while the familiar mugs are nowhere to be seen. To get a grip on all that’s been going, especially if the break spanned several weeks or months, is a mammoth task and can easily feel overwhelming. Intuitively we know things aren’t going to be the same as we left them but the ability to handle changes can be acquired with a few simple adaptations.

Orange Rhino I never thought I was much of a yeller, however, I knew that I did become exasperated, irritated and short with my girls. What shocked me the most was when I heard the way my eldest speak to her friends. When things did not go her way as she played, I was horrified to hear the tone she used and wondered where she could have picked it up. Kindy? Music? Playgroup? I already knew the answer – me. I was hearing myself in her words!

30

Cairns Parenting Companion Spring 2013

Enter the Orange Rhino, a mum of four boys who pledged to “be a mom who has the energy and determination to forge ahead and parent with more composure and warmth without yelling”. Her blog, www.theorangerhino. com, was started to keep herself accountable on her pledge to stop yelling at her boys and now aims to help parents with their responses to their children. While hers was yelling, other parents have pledged to change their “tone of voice, attitude and irritability”. The blog focuses on how to interact with children in a way that validates their need for attention and a parent’s need for sanity in order to be emotionally available. The Orange Rhino places an emphasis on balance. A parent’s need for “some time alone, some peace and quiet” is balanced with the reality that they also need to be available to care for the children “who are growing and changing before [their] eyes”. It sounded like something I wanted for myself. I started the challenge as school holidays began. By day three, I had still not managed to control my responses. I kept a journal and followed the Orange Rhino’s advice to track my triggers. I wrote down that mine are “fatigue, trying to juggle the needs of both children, and questions, questions and more endless questions asked for the sake of talking.” Day 4 In order to make our house more peaceful, I implemented a new rule: Do not yell through the house – only talk if you can see a face. So now I find myself yelling through the house, “Can you see my face?! Day 5 Really trying not to yell. Interactions with my oldest now go: “WILL YOU put your dress on now ... please?” I begin with a yell, force myself to modulate my voice and then tack a please on the end. By the time I get to the please, I am actually feeling more calm. Day 8 Finally made it through an entire day without yelling – I think! We were out all day, neither girl napped and I am exhausted, but we had so much fun. Day 11 Four days without yelling and now I’m back to square one. Two pulled the One’s hair and bit her on the trampoline. I had barely had any sleep, so my reactions have not been very consistent or calm and measured.

On the blog, one of the mums suggested having a system to implement so that you can see that even though you seem to be constantly on day one, you have had days without yelling. She has a jar and puts an orange bead in it for each day she goes without yelling. That way, when she ends up back at square one, she can see that she has had success and not be so hard on herself. Other tips on the site include alternatives to yelling, which covers fun alternatives, looking like a fool alternatives, bad parent alternatives (these made me feel better as she suggests sometimes putting the television on to give yourself a break), preventative alternatives and serious alternatives. Each section has options to choose from that can diffuse a situation, distract you and your children, or give you a break. The latest trend on the Facebook page is to take a photo of a situation when you are tempted to yell. Children in places they are not supposed to be, covered in who knows what have been posted for everyone’s enjoyment. The facebook page provides a supportive community for parents to vent, ask for advice and celebrate their achievements. At certain points, parents are encouraged to ‘toot their horns’. Everyone is invited to comment detailing one of their successes of the day or week. There are also daily tips for keeping you on track and the page has become my go-to during the day when I am feeling flustered. Day 18 Horrendous day and I yelled thanks to dog poop. Two was awake and crying at 2am, then woke up at 5am screaming for ‘bekky’ (breakfast) waking us all up. I took them to music and on the way in from the car told them to watch out for the dog poop I had just seen. Then they had to stop and inspect each blade of grass looking for poop rather than just stay on the concrete path and keep walking like I told them to. We were late, I was tired and I yelled. I yelled at them to stop looking for dog poop, stick to the path and HURRY UP! Other mums heard me. They were nice about it, but I felt beyond awful. Now it has been just over a week without yelling and I am finally seeing some success. I am trying to see my children, hear them and know them. They are worth that.

I saw an increasingly common sight in a supermarket recently. A mother with a toddler was pushing a shopping trolley with a toddler while speaking on a mobile phone. Her son was trying to get her attention. “Mum! Mum!” he repeatedly yelled. Getting no reaction he started throwing the contents of the shopping trolley onto the floor. That was one way to get his mother’s attention! There’s been a lot written lately about the impact on communication technology on children and young people, particularly around the area of mobile phones, instant text messaging and cyber-safety. But parents’ use of such technology — and its effect on their offspring — is now becoming an equal source of concern to some child-development researchers. The concerns revolve the invasive nature of communication technology and its ability to distract parents from their kids.
It’s not just in public places that technology takes parents away from children, laptops and other electronic devices are constantly turned on in many modern households.

There is little research on how parents’ constant use of such technology affects children, but there is little doubt that oneon-one communication where parents talk and explain things to children, and respond to their questions is the basis of effective parenting, particularly in the early years.

One five year US study found that children experienced feelings of hurt, jealousy and competitiveness when their parents paid attention to their devices rather than them. The kids were particularly indignant when parents were talking on mobiles during mealtimes, after school pickups and sports events.

Children need to learn that they can’t have their parents’ attention all the time. There is a time for interacting with mum and dad, and there are times when parents need their own space and time.

Getting this balance right has always been a parenting challenge, but it appears that communication technology is something new that parents and kids’ have to contend with.

Working out how to integrate technology is a modern family issue, one that both parents and kids need to get their heads around. It’s worth remembering that

parents model all sorts of behaviours for kids, including how children use mobile phones, instant messaging and the Internet.

In Partnership with Parents

Here are some suggestions if you communication technology constantly competes for your parenting attention: 1. Know who you are focusing on: Children grow up quickly so you have them their attention for such a short-time so smart parents make the most of their children’s early years. To do this you need to minimize outside distractions including mobile phones. Consider leaving phones behind, or turning them off when you are playing, reading or doing things specifically with your kids. 2. Put boundaries in place: Technology maybe available 24 hours a day but you and your kids don’t have to be tuned in all the time. Don’t bring mobiles to the dinner table, turn off computers well before bedtime and have text-free or twitter-free times. One mum, a selfconfessed ‘social media and text message addict’ put a ban on her own internet and mobile phone use between 4.00 to 8.30pm. Her children cheered when they found out. 3. Communicate your intentions: Give your kids a heads-up when you are

with them and expecting a call from work or a friend. Let them know when an interruption is likely, but that you will return to them once you’ve answered the call. 4. Stick to time limits: “One more text message”, “Just 5 more minutes…. ” Sound familiar. These types of comments are as likely to come from parents as kids these days. If you can identify with these comments then set some times limits, and stick to them. Research into children’s language development shows that children develop a wider vocabulary when their parents talk

For parents who work odd hours, shift and weekend work, and who don’t have family support, finding the appropriate care for their kids creates some real challenges. That is for those who haven’t met Erin Jenkins – a modern day ‘Mary Poppins’ and family day care worker. What drew you to Family Daycare and how does your business run? I find providing family day care so rewarding and enjoyable that even when my daughter started school I have continued to offer Family Daycare. Now, I have been providing in home care in Caravonica for almost two years for newborns to school age.

What is the premise behind Family Daycare? Family Daycare offers quality care in smaller groups within warm, comfortable and nurturing homes. Through play and intentional teaching, children can learn and develop at their own pace with loving care and support. I get to know the children well and they have the stability of having the same person with them every day who they can trust and feel safe with. The children in my care also get to spend time with other children within the Family Daycare community and we also spend time in nature and the wider community. We have been noticed many a morning riding our bikes along the Esplanade to have a picnic morning tea under a shady tree. We get messy and have fun! What qualifications/training are required to run a Family Daycare? In 2014, the qualification requirement changed and carers must now complete a Certificate 3 in Children’s Services to start a Family Daycare. Most Family Daycare educators in Cairns have completed a Certificate 3, as well as a Diploma/Advanced Diploma in Children’s services and have undertaken a training program prior to starting with the Coordination Unit. We also complete senior first aid, CPR, Asthma and Anaphylaxis training.

Our training is ongoing and we undertake professional development courses covering a wide range of topics including caring for children with additional needs.

What are the advantages of after-hours care with a Family Daycare provider? We not only provide before and after school care, but also evening, overnight, weekend, vacation and respite care. The wonderful thing about Family Daycare is that our hours are so flexible that we can fit with parents’ needs. We often pick children up from school or home and even take them to their extracurricular activities such as sports or dance classes. The children become part of our family and therefore benefit from the warmth, care and nurturing that exists within a family. We offer a ‘home from home’ environment that benefits both children and their parents. The children are able to relax or run around in the back yard. There is space to do homework and get help if they need it. Meals are provided if required and lots of fun is had. During the weekends and on school holidays, there are many activities and outings that cater for all ages. Being with children of all ages is more like being in a big family. It’s not just child care!

What hours are available to parents for after hours care? I provide 24 hour care. Children are here at all sorts of times, day and night, week days and on weekends. I have under school age children during the day and school age children before and after school and in school holidays. I also have children over night when their parents are working shifts or they simply need a night to themselves. Some children even stay with us for longer periods when their parents are sick or have to work away.

HOMEWORK Homework can strike fear into the heart of the most accomplished parents, at times leaving them feeling completely incapable of teaching their children. Only last week, my husband stormed around the house, hands in the air, claiming that he was “…not even smart enough to help with Prep homework!” After calming him down, I turned to help my Prep aged son with his homework sheet. He had to name the item pictured and then work out the end sound of that word a battle of the wills begun. Was the picture a bird or a parrot; a house or a home? When did Prep homework become so controversial? Surely I am not the only parent who has homework horrors…and my husband? Well, don’t mention homework to him, he has only just stopped rocking in the corner! Queensland state schools and many Independent and Catholic have their own homework policies and it does pay to ask your child’s teacher what their school policy is. This can be a helpful guide to parents. It should detail the amount of time spent on homework, letting you know if it is taking your little one (and maybe you too!) too long. Many educational experts argue the pros and cons of homework, I am not here to take either side, my advice is all about helping you and your child to navigate the homework years in the smoothest possible way. Here are my tips to avoid homework horrors…someone please pass this article along to my husband. BREATHE Keeping oxygenated is always the most important first step to helping your child with their homework. If you feel yourself getting agitated, annoyed, panicked or wanting to run away, just say to your little one, “…hmm I need to think

36

Cairns Parenting Companion Spring 2013

about that one, give (insert name here) 5 minutes to think.” Walk away, calm down and come back to them with a happy smile. Thinking is a process and one that can take time, you have just given yourself a little breather and modelled to your child a thinking strategy that can often lead to clearer and more perceptive insights. Walking away from a question for a few minutes is not a bad thing. ASK A great way to help consolidate your child’s learning is to ask them to teach you how to complete a question or activity. If they can teach you, then it is another opportunity for them to transfer their current understanding to their long term memory. If they can’t tell you how to complete the task, that could be an indication that either they don’t know or don’t remember. If you do know how to complete the task, talk them through your way of doing it. Don’t hesitate on this. You can teach your child another way of completing questions, often we need to hear, see, or do a task in a variety of ways to get a ‘feel’ for what is needed. USE WHAT YOU HAVE ON HAND If your little one has to complete questions about money, then grab some coins and let them see the real thing. If your little one is working on single digit addition or subtraction then grab some things from the kitchen to help them count with concrete/real materials. It may help them to be active when working out a task. If you have older children, higher primary or secondary school, head to your preferred internet search engine. Start your search with “how to…” or use phrases such as “teaching primary students…” to help you with finding websites or video clips teaching how to complete questions or activities.

TALK Approach your child’s teacher either in person or email and let them know what your concerns are with your child’s homework. Teachers are happy to help you avoid homework horrors and to make it a much more enjoyable time for you and your child. If homework time is stressful for you and your child, it is very unlikely that any real learning consolidation will occur. Parents and teachers are partners in educating students, so start a conversation, ask for help, let them know if homework demands don’t fit your family schedule.

“Parents and teachers are part ners in educat in g students, so star t a conversation”

Party Games

Our Party Planner comes complete with suggestions of venues, caterers and entertainers but no party is complete without some party games.

Pass the Parcel You need: newspaper or wrapping paper, small gifts to equal the amount of kids playing, music. Buy as many small gifts as there are kids coming to the party (and maybe a few extras) and wrap each gift in separate layers. Make sure each layer is easily opened. Sit the kids around in a circle, turn on the music and get them to pass to each other the parcel. When the music stops the person holding the parcel gets to unwrap one layer. Repeat this until there is no layers or parcel left. Idea: Have only one present (the final one) wrapped in a parcel which is given to the person who unwraps the last layer. Instead of gifts for each layer, kids must take an item of clothing from the dress up pile in the centre of the circle. Try funny hats, wigs etc.

Treasure Hunt You need: printouts, colouring station with pencils/crayons, treasure hunt items, prizes. Have some printouts ready for the kids to colour in, which is a picture of the item they need to find. Include a number next to the image. That then becomes how many of those items they need to find in the treasure hunt. Idea: You can also give an award to the best colouring in and the quickest to find his/her item in the treasure hunt.

Musical Chairs You need: chairs, Music, One prize. Set up chairs in 2 rows, back to back. There must be one less chair to the total number of kids playing. Turn on some lively music and get the kids to walk about the chairs until the music stops, at which point everyone must find a seat. The person left without a chair, is out of the game. One chair is removed at each round until there is only one person left in a chair who is deemed the winner.

Welcome Rachel

Idea: If you don’t have enough chairs try playing musical statues instead, the kids stop moving when the music stops.

Childcare with heart Five years ago I decided to start my own Family Day Care Business from home as at that stage I had three young children at home and I liked the idea of working around them. I still care for the same children who enrolled with me from the start and I now care for their younger siblings who enjoy taking their big brothers and sisters to school with me or going on outings with them on school holidays. I have built trusting relationships with each child and their families and find that ultimately rewarding. To me, Family Day Care is truly family. I live at Whitfield and enjoy providing long day care, before and after school care plus I cater for weekend, evening and overnight care.

Evidence has been found of Reflexology being used in ancient civilisations as long ago as 4000 years BC. Paintings in a tomb in Egypt depicts people working on each other’s feet and there is some evidence that the art of Reflexology was also practiced in China and India as well as by the North American Indians. Modern day Reflexology is based on these ancient techniques.

How does it work? Eunice Ingham conducted research on the effects of Reflexology on thousands of people over a 40-year period, which allowed her to map reflexes on the feet that correspond to each part of the body, including organs and glands. Working the feet stimulates blood flow and nerve endings, of which there are more than 7200 in each foot. MRI research has also shown that Reflexology applied to a specific part of the foot activated the reflected area in the brain.

How does it feel? People often ask if Reflexology is ticklish, or even painful. It is very rare that feet are ticklish under the firm but gentle pressure used to work the reflexes. Painful reflexes can occur when there is an imbalance in the body, but in the instances when it is too much to bear, the hands and face can be worked instead, with great results. Benefits of Reflexology The main aim of Reflexology is to induce a state of deep relaxation in which both body and mind are receptive to healing.

During Foot Reflexology the feet tell the body’s story and working them assists many conditions. These include constipation, bronchitis, neck pain, headache, fertility issues and many more. Closer to the brain, Facial Reflexology is also very beneficial and has been linked to helping neurological problems such as Parkinson’s, learning difficulties, multiple sclerosis, autism and metabolism. The various body systems such as the digestive, reproductive and urinary systems also benefit, as do the muscles and joints.

From the cradle to the grave Reflexology is safe and beneficial for all ages, from babies to the elderly, for pregnant women and those undergoing chemotherapy or surgery. Reflexology is a great adjunct and complementary therapy alongside conventional medicine.

requirements for effective conception. I have seen clients better prepared physically and mentally throughout the different processes involved in undergoing IVF through the use of Reflexology.

Mum-to-Be Reflexology balances hormones, which may alleviate morning sickness and postnatal depression, as well as relieving moderate oedema, symphysis pubis pain, lower back pain, cramps in the legs, mood swings, (gestational) diabetes, and constipation.

Baby Reflexology enables an optimum flow of blood and nutrients through the placenta. Babies also pick up on a relaxed and well Mum-to-Be. Generally ‘Reflexology babies’ are happier and more content. IMPORTANCE

Belonging

We all need to feel like we have a place where we belong. In fact, the need to belong is a primary human necessity embedded in our very DNA. This deep-seated need transcends all cultures and is reflected in all communities throughout the world. We’ve all heard the slogan “it takes a village to raise a child”. This motto implies that the child is at the heart of the community and that community reinforces the child’s sense of belonging, identity and connectedness.

Social psychologists have been studying our need for belonging for well over a century and one of the most famous studies on this subject was conducted in 1943 by Abraham Maslow who proposed that the need to belong was one of the five basic needs, required alongside physiological needs like food and sleep. In fact, it has become clear that the need to belong has a strong impact on people’s cognitions, emotions and behaviours and a chronically unmet need has many negative consequences that can profoundly affect an individual’s life. This is one of the reasons people seek to spend time with other individuals, which helps create a community. A recent article in KidsMatter, an Australian mental health and wellbeing initiative, confirms that a sense of belonging protects children against mental health problems and improves their learning. Children who feel they belong are happier, more relaxed and have fewer behavioural problems than others. They are also more motivated and successful learners. Not only does a sense of belonging improve a

child’s ability to learn, but it increases their skills in developing relationships. When children feel included, they are able to develop a sense of pride in who they are which helps build positive self- esteem. All children need to feel that their world is a safe place where people care about them, where their needs for support, respect and friendships are met and where they are able to get help working out any problems. When these needs are met, children develop a sense of belonging. Just like children, we adults need a place where people care about us, a place where we feel safe telling our troubles and woes and where we can get help working through a problem. From babyhood we learn that belonging feels safe and good and so we seek it out later in life, trying to re-capture it by surrounding ourselves with feelings of belonging to family groups, friendship groups and wider community groups. We’ve evolved to secrete neurochemicals like oxytocin which makes being together feel good, triggering feelings of happiness and love. Even if you’re not surrounded by extended family, you can still create a ‘village atmosphere’ for your child by engaging with your local community. Whether it’s partaking in playgroups, organised games in the park, community events or your child’s school, you can help reinforce your child’s belonging, identity and connectedness.

Saving for your dream holiday can be overwhelming. The budgeting, check-lists and organising to turn your daydreams of white sandy beaches or snow covered mountains into a reality can seem endless. But there are a few crucial tips that can turn your holiday dream into the holiday of a lifetime. 1. Make up your mind. It’s okay to daydream, but you have to put your feet in the ground. Do you have a dream vacation spot in mind? Will you get there by bus, train, car or plane? You have to decide where you want to go to have an idea of the money you need to spend. A holiday to one of the hidden beaches in Cancun, Mexico will cost approximately $3,000 for a return ticket each, and accommodation will cost around $200 per night in a 4 star hotel. Having these figures in mind will help you have a savings goal. 2. Write a plan. It’s very important to write a holiday plan. Use a notebook, smartphone, iPad or computer. Write down the days you wish to travel; where you’ll have breakfast, lunch and dinner; and if you’re taking any tours. Sticking to a plan is a great to stop you spending more than you have. You can then do some research so you can get the exact costs. 3. Create a daily, weekly or monthly budget. Focus on a Budget Planner. Sit down with your partner and discuss how much money is left in your pocket once you’ve paid your bills and daily expenses (groceries, extra-curricular activities, etc.) Then start creating a budget specifically for your dream vacation. This will give you a realistic scenario and you’ll have time to change your plan if it’s too expensive for your budget. There are several budget planners available, but make sure you include your pay, your partner’s pay, current savings and bonuses. 4. Don’t mix apples with oranges. Open a high interest savings account with a great introductory rate and refer to it as your ‘Vacation Fund’. Don’t take any money out and make sure you deposit regularly. By opening a new bank account separate from those you already

have, you won’t be mixing apples with oranges and you’ll be able to see exactly how much you have for your holiday. 5. Paying off your debt goes a long way. Keeping up with your credit cards may be quite a hassle, but before going on your dream holiday, be sure you’ve paid most of them off. This leaves you with more spending money, or an emergency fund while you are overseas. If you down on credit spending, you’ll also save on interest rates. For example say you have a credit card interest of $2000, your monthly payment is around $200, which is equal to dinner plus drinks for two in a boutique restaurant in the Riviera Maya. 6. Dine in, not out. Instead of going out for dinner or out to the movies, think it through and stay in. Make dinner instead. Try a new recipe and rent a DVD, or have a games night with your kids. That could equal $100 for your holiday. 7. Don’t overspend on small stuff. When shopping, make sure you have a list and stick to it. Shopping without a list makes it too easy to impulse buy. Also, do your grocery shopping after you’ve eaten, so you don’t add anything extra to your cart. 8. Don’t shop until you drop. Forget about those shoes you saw in the store last week, they can wait. Think about your vacation when the craving for retail therapy arises. You don’t want money going on shoes instead of margaritas and breathtaking sunsets on the beach. 9. Keep birthdays and important dates simple. There are some important dates when people over indulge. Do you really need a big party to celebrate a special occasion or birthday? Maybe a family gathering or a picnic would be just as fun? 10. Keep Track on Your App. There are several ways to keep track of the money spent on daily expenses and your holiday savings account. One of the easiest and most tech savvy ways is using apps like Trackmyspend from the Itunes store. These tips and some organisation can make your daydream a holiday of a lifetime.

No one size fits all!

Buying or building a home is a huge financial commitment and is not, for most, done on a whim. In this age of technology and access to information, it could be expected that choosing a bank to help pay for a small piece of paradise would be easy. Unfortunately, from my experience, this is not the case. What we actually have now is an information overload resulting in masses of misleading data to sort through that has the potential to blur our decision-making. Having the right home loan that is set up correctly is hugely important and can save thousands of dollars over the life of the loan. However, there is no one size fits all approach, so if you are looking for some clarity when buying, building or refinancing properties, it is often a good idea to make an appointment with a mortgage broker to get professional advice on loan products that will suit your circumstances. Once you have made an appointment, bring in your questions and internet research so that the broker can help you decide whether what you think might be a good loan option, really is. Having been a mortgage broker for some time, I am frequently asked a number of questions relating to home loans. Q. Can we still claim the First Home Owner’s Grant of $7,000? A. No. Sadly this offer has ended, but stamp duty concession is still available for eligible buyers, which provides some benefits. There is, however, a $15000 grant available for first home buyers looking to build or buy a brand new property that has never been lived in. Q. My own bank has said no! Does that mean everyone will?

A. No. Usually there is always someone who will help. When your application was rejected, your bank should have advised you of why they can’t help. The good news is that all lenders have slightly different policies, so we will find a solution that works. Q. What is the minimum deposit required to buy a home? A. 5% is the minimum expected by most banks and must be saved over a period of at least 3 months. Of course, more is always better. Q. Can my parents help me buy a home? A. Yes. Some lenders offer family guarantees that may make it possible to enter the market sooner, especially if saving the deposit is taking too long. Q What’s better, a fixed or variable interest rate? A. The answer to that will relate to your personal circumstances. There are many more questions that brokers are asked on a daily basis, some you may not have thought of yourself, so it really is a good idea to have a chat before making any decisions that could potentially affect you for the next 30 years. For more information, or to book your own appointment for professional mortgage advice, phone Gus on 0400 636 953.

Hyperemesis What happens when your baby makes you sick?

WORDS Alexandra McLaren

Nine months ago the condition of Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) gained worldwide attention when pregnant Princess Kate was admitted to hospital after a severe bout of nausea and vomiting which was later diagnosed as Hyperemesis Gravidarum or HG. Author Charlotte Bronte died from the complications of HG and Cairns mum, Karen Hall knows all too well the impact the sickness has on the lives and health of otherwise young, fit and healthy pregnant mothers. The vomiting and nausea during pregnancy is often attributed to morning sickness during pregnancy; however hyperemesis affects about 0.5 to 2 per cent of pregnant women and is diagnosed when the mother starts to lose weight and is unable to tolerate any food at all. Falling pregnant was the easiest part of pregnancy for Karen, who has been down the devastating HG road three times and has successfully managed to avoid it in her current pregnancy. Karen’s first pregnancy was in 2008 when at five and a half weeks pregnant she experienced constant vomiting and dehydration with low urine output as a result. “I was at work when one of my colleagues noticed how unwell I was looking. I was admitted to the hospital straight away and I had intravenous (IV) fluids overnight and then Dr Kiesey-Calding made the diagnosis the following day,” Karen said. “I was in hospital from 11 weeks until I lost the baby at 20 weeks.”

Then, in 2010 Karen fell pregnant with her daughter Isabelle and it was apparent very early in the pregnancy that she was going to suffer again with HG. “This time I went into hospital at eight weeks and was discharged at 24 weeks when Dr Kiesey-Calding was satisfied that I could tolerate enough food to sustain both Isabelle and me.” Cairns obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Natalie Kiesey-Calding said the most obvious feature of HG is the “vomiting, vomiting, vomiting! Diagnosis is not always straight forward as there is a grey area from ‘just morning sickness’ to Hyperemesis Gravidarum. A recent survey was taken of clinicians across Australia to get a consensus for a diagnosis but the doctor needs to also exclude other reasons for the vomiting such as a urinary tract infection, cholecystitis (inflammation of the gall bladder) or migraines which can all make you very sick. “Classically, the symptoms of HG show at around seven weeks until about 15-16 weeks. In severe cases, the symptoms can be present throughout the entire pregnancy.” Fortunately, for Karen, the vomiting eventually passed but not without leaving its mark. “Each pregnancy I have had a special IV line inserted in my arm for fluids and I become hypersensitive to light. I’m very restless, I lose my appetite and my eyesight is temporarily affected from the medication. According to Dr Kiesey-Calding, the majority of women who have suffered from HG with their first pregnancy will experience it again in subsequent pregnancies and it is not uncommon for these women and their partners to make the choice to be a one child family.

For those women who are predisposed to HG and who make the decision to have more children, Dr Kiesey-Calding recommends seeing a good dietician to optimise their diet as part of the overall treatment. “The most important issue for the mother is that the symptoms are taken seriously by a clinician and that the mother is not made to feel that she should just soldier on and get over the “morning sickness”. Treatment options are highly individualised and can range from wafers that prevent vomiting to medication that stop the secretion of gastric acid into the stomach. However, there is very little that can be done to prevent HG completely so it is most important that mothers receive both the emotional support and treatment for the symptoms of dehydration. After deliberating over whether to be a one child family or try again for a second baby, Karen is now well and truly past the half way mark, and is looking and feeling better than in any of her other pregnancies due to her current medication regimen. “This is my fourth pregnancy and it was going to be my last time due to the toll that the HG has had on my body, both physically and emotionally,” Karen said.

HYPEREMESIS GRAVIDARUM FACTS • In the past women have died from dehydration as a result from HG • Often HG is worse with twins • Women with HG experience difficulty in keeping down the recommended dose of folic acid, increasing the risk of spina bifida.

Patients with private health insurance who require treatment for Hyperemesis Gravidarum will have the benefit of a multidisciplinary team approach to their care at the Cairns Private Hospital’s Women’s Unit. To book to have your baby at the Cairns Private Hospital, complete an online booking at www.cairnsph.com.au/ Maternity/preadmission.aspx or contact a midwife on 4052 5303 Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm.

K i nd n ess Random acts of

Never underestimate what those small acts can do...

Some days you wake up feeling flat and dejected. Other times, it seems that the entire universe is against you. The car keys are mysteriously missing, the handle on the nappy bag breaks the moment you pick up your toddler to get in the car and when you bend down to pick up the randomness that is now rolling around your driveway, you notice that your car has a flat tyre.

But when you finally make it to your destination, a stranger offers you a smile or tells you that your outfit looks nice and you instantly feel better. Random acts of kindness could be a comment, a kind gesture or even a donation, but we should never underestimate what those moments can do for a complete stranger. While most of us have the occasional bad day, there are times when life deals someone a hand that leaves them reeling and their future uncertain, like it did for Edge Hill resident and mother of two, Melissa Rennings. Melissa was in remission after battling breast cancer in 2012, but on the 27th of July, she was told scans had shown three brain tumours, which were likely to be incurable and inoperable.“When they told me about the tumours I was in shock, numb. I felt like the wind was knocked out me. What more could we go through?!”

Although her prognosis is bleak,

renowned Sydney neurosurgeon Charlie Teo has decided that brain surgery might be an option, but with a price tag of between $80,000 and $100,000, which Melissa now needs to raise. CPC’s very own Bec Waqanikalou saw Melissa’s story on Facebook and leapt into action. Despite never having met Melissa, she organised practical help for the family including meals, housekeeping and a wheelchair, given that the tumours place pressure on nerves which makes walking impossible. A website was created and fundraising began for Melissa’s treatment with many locals, mostly strangers, offering to donate their services and money to

This misconception can actually be causing harm to anyone breathing in the air from a contaminated air conditioner.

a number of harmful contaminants. These include mould, mildew, dead skin, dust, rotting animal and insect matter, sludge, and all kinds of bacteria, including Listeria.

Australian building standards and manufacturer warrantees specify that air conditioners should be serviced and cleaned each year, but most people won’t have their units serviced and cleaned properly until it starts smelling putrid, leaking water or not working properly. This is mostly due to a simple lack of awareness. If people knew what was actually living and growing inside their air conditioners, they would think again. After just months of operating, a range of airborne particles and spores will settle into the air conditioner. Insects and small animals such as geckos and mice are also happy to make themselves at home inside air conditioning units. A humid climate, darkness, moisture and confined space also create the perfect breeding environment for bacteria and fungus. All of this means the air conditioner unit begins harbouring

With the addition of potentially making your family sick, the following issues are also worth considering: • Increased allergies –airborne spores and particles are circulated through your home. • Foul odours from any of the many growing or rotting contaminants, including the build-up of mould and sludge also circulate throughout your home. • Increased mould colonisation occurs throughout the home. • Increased power bill - a dirty air conditioner uses more power.

regular basis. Australian standards suggest that the correct frequency is once per year, although this may vary depending on how many hours the units are on, what settings are used and the environment in which they operate. In order to ensure your air conditioner is cleaned properly, there are a few things to be aware of. The main internal components that are required to be cleaned are the fan and fan area, the front and rear coils, and the drainage system. The only way to clean all three of these areas properly is to use a wetwash system. This involves using water and compressed air to flush the unit. However, many technicians simply spray a corrosive chemical onto the coil that can also erode the unit itself. If you are in any doubt about whether or not your air conditioners need a proper clean, try the following steps. 1. Make sure your air con is turned off

• Decreased capacity – a dirty air conditioner does not operate efficiently

2. Carefully open the horizontal louvres with your fingers.

• Reduced lifespan – a dirty air conditioner breaks down much quicker than a clean, well-maintained air conditioner.

3. Shine a torch up inside and try to find the fan barrel.

The best way to ensure that your family is breathing healthy air is to have air conditioning units cleaned properly on a

If your air conditioner looks like the dirty one above, do something about it now, for the sake of your family’s health.

My quest for simple living Follow Clare’s blog at :

My six months of living sensibly have come to an end, and I am once again free to spend my money as I see fit. Against all the odds, however, I’ve found myself sticking with my new, more frugal way of life. It’s not that I haven’t tried to start spending again. I’ve been round the shops on the lookout for a dress and a pair of winter boots, but to no avail. For some reason my new habits are dying hard. It would seem that over the past six months there has been a shift in my priorities, and I have an idea that this has happened

72

Cairns Parenting Companion Spring 2013

partly due to my exposure to the phenomenon of ‘simple living’. I came across the idea of ‘simple living’ during my daily internet trawl for thrifty tips to help me through my six months of not spending. It appears that an increasing numbers of families are moving towards a more simple and straightforward way of life that emphasises thriftiness, the home, and quality time spent with family and friends over top careers, expensive possessions and fashion. The principle of simple living suggests that rather than working to pay off loans for ‘must have’ items, we should look at our lives and re-assess what it is that truly brings us joy. If we are not happy with our lives, our jobs, or our work-life balance, we are encouraged to take a step back and make changes. ‘Simple living’ is nothing new. In fact, it is more or less a return to the way of living enjoyed by families in years gone by. It places emphasis on saving and paying off debt, becoming more homecentred, making things from scratch, and growing and cooking our own produce. Simple living also encourages us to take time to bring up our children

in a way which helps them to appreciate a slower way of life in contrast to the instant gratification they are increasingly growing to expect. According to the principles of simple living, an activity such as helping the kids to cook a cake from scratch brings a variety of benefits to our families. It encourages us to spend time together, teaches our children skills and creativity, and encourages a sense of pride, accomplishment and delayed gratification, which cannot be purchased in a hurried frenzy during a stressful trip to the supermarket. As my family grows, I am becoming increasingly aware of what I want for myself and for them. I want to spend time with my kids whilst they are still at home. I want a fulfilling job that doesn’t take over my life and I want us to spend our summers pottering about together. I want my kids to know where their food comes from, and to be able to enjoy the freedom from the dissatisfaction caused by the constant need for new possessions and instant gratification. I know that this is all very idealistic, but I do believe that it is something that we as a family can achieve.

Recent amendments to superannuation regulations may have an impact on selfmanaged superannuation funds (SMSF), about which trustees should be aware. And further amendments are in the pipeline. When the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Regulations 1994 (SIS Regulations) came into effect, it became an operating standard, which means that the ATO can enforce compliance by superannuation fund trustees. One of the new standards requires that trustees of a SMSF have an investment strategy in place that considers whether a fund member should hold insurance cover.

$

The new standard states that an investment strategy must consider a certain things, including:

$

$

• The risk involved and the likely return from the entity’s investments

$ It’s time $ to make $ insurance part of your SMSF’s investment $ strategy $

$

$

$

• The composition of the entity’s investments as a whole, including the extent to which they are diverse or involve exposure of the entity to risks from inadequate diversification

$

• The liquidity of the entity’s investments • The ability of the entity to discharge its existing and prospective liabilities • Whether the trustees of the fund should hold a contract of insurance that provides insurance cover for one or more members of the fund.

$

So what does all this mean? For a lot of trustees, this will mean that you will want to obtain advice on the points mentioned above. A financial planner will be able to help you determine the risk, return and diversification of your investments. And an accountant might be more appropriate

when looking at the fund’s ability to pay its liabilities as and when they fall due. But some of you might want to do it yourself. After all, it is this control that lead you to setting up an SMSF in the first place. So where do you start? When formulating an investment strategy, the best place to start is to look at your goals. For example, if both of you are in your thirties and will be making regular contributions for a long time, your goals will be different to someone who is in their sixties and thinking of starting a pension soon. A younger person might be investing in growth assets because they can withstand market fluctuations more than a person currently living on the income from their investments. From there, you can look at how much money will be going in to the fund each year and how much is going out. Then take a look at the annual expenses of the fund. This will include things like accounting fees, financial planner fees, tax, etc. Most funds in accumulation phase don’t have big expenses and they can usually be met with contributions. But, if you have, say, a property with a loan, you need to consider how you are going to meet all of those expenses and loan repayments when you might only have rent and some contributions coming in. You certainly don’t need to demonstrate that you have made the right decisions. Even professional fund managers occasionally get it wrong. You merely need to show that you have thought about the issues before deciding in what to invest. And, of course, the only way to do this is to put the investment strategy in writing and mention how you have considered each of the issues.

None of the following is representative of the views of Cairns Parenting Companion and for reasons of personal safety the author wishes to remain anonymous. Yep! He’s a bloke and he’s confused.

The Pet Project Recently, we lost a long term member of our family; our pet turtle, Tommy. Generally in pet years (in human years too, for that matter) turtles can live for a very long time and stay a part of the home as household pets longer than most “household children”. But with the sad passing of Tommy, I got to thinking about the input pets have had on our home and our lives and the roles they’ve played in our children’s upbringing. Firstly let me run an abridged pet “roll of honour” past you. We’ve had dogs and cats aplenty, turtles, budgies and cockatiels (the escape artists of the pet world). There were squadrons of insects and squillions of carefully nursed tadpoles that became frogs and toads. There were loads of fish (some that the turtles and frogs ate), baby chooks, guinea pigs and some really strange rabbits, including “Iris the carnivorous, body building rabbit”. Iris was probably more of a hare than a rabbit, and possibly the most intimidating mammal I’ve ever encountered. With a growl like a honey badger and numerous successful bouts with a Maltese Terrier called Banjo, she’s more than worthy of a whole article herself. But getting back to

our menagerie, we also had a few hermit crabs, spiders, ants with their own farm, an uncountable assortment of reptiles, pet mice (some white, but most of dubious origin) and finally, a glorious Palomino horse. Aside from the fun and excitement (and fear) that most of these pets provided, there were some important and long lasting lessons learned over the years, not only by the kiddies, but by us parents as well. Firstly, there was the “all creatures great and small” attitude that having pets instilled in all of us. It’s the principle that all life is worthy of respect. Having said that, I never did feel comfortable with our third child’s “glass jar cockroach farm” and was even less so when it became the “glass jar cannibal cockroach farm”, after three months and several increasingly less civilised cockroach generations. Secondly, we came to an understanding of the responsibilities that we, as the alleged most intelligent creatures on this planet, must live up to. The animals that we choose to bring into our lives as pets require our care to survive and need our

love and attention to flourish. Stewardship is an important thing for kids and parents to learn, but it also makes it very hard when pets eventually die. That leads to the third lesson: the tragic understanding that there is a balance between life and death that will always eventually tip toward the latter. It’s sad when a child, barely old enough to understand the concept of life, has to deal with the confusion and permanence of death, especially when it’s the death of a much loved pet. But it’s an important part of preparing for the real world, I guess. So if you’ve been contemplating getting a pet, for your kid’s sake, just do it. I can’t recommend them more highly. If not for the love and enjoyment most of them, with the exception of spiders and Iris the evil “bunny-beast”, bring to the home, then for the opportunity they give your children to learn and grow, accept responsibility and love and care for something other than themselves. As a final footnote, I should warn you that Iris did eventually escape from our yard and that she and/or her offspring are quite possibly still out there!
