Giel Louws Over een serie schilderijen, zwarte acryl, pigment en inkt op met motiefjes geprinte stof. Een serie beelden over wichten en snotapen, die zonder aarzeling in bomen klimmen. lass dich nicht unterkriegen / sei frech und wild / und wunderbar Astrid Lindgren “We hebben bomen lang onderschat, pas sinds korte tijd weten we dat bomen zoveel meer zijn dan gewoon maar een plant. Dat bomen onderling communiceren verraste ons allemaal. Wat gebeurt er dan als deze bomen in vorm gesnoeid worden vraag ik me dan af. In veel werken van Bo de Jong spelen bomen een grote rol. Ook in haar werk zijn bomen niet zomaar bomen, nee deze bomen zijn personages in een vertelling. De bomen in Bo’s schilderijen worden gesnoeid, beklommen, bewoont, of bewonderd. Deze bomen lijken symbool te staan voor de mogelijkheid om vanuit een ander gezichtspunt naar de wereld te kijken. Je neemt een ladder, je klimt in een boom, en je bent los van alles. Het kost wat moed om de wankele ladders in te klimmen, of je voeten op de laagste takken te zetten. Maar als je eenmaal hoog in de boom zit, zie je beter hoe absurd het er daar beneden uitziet. In de recente serie minder bange meisjes daagt Bo haar medemens uit om de klim te wagen. Ik denk dat het iets zegt over hoe Bo in het leven staat, hoe ze om zich heen kijkt en zich verbaast.”

That trees communicate among themselves surprised us all. So what happens when these trees are pruned into shape I wonder. Trees play a major role in many of Bo de Jong's works. In her work too, trees are not just trees, no these trees are characters in a narrative. The trees in Bo's paintings are pruned, climbed, inhabited, or admired. These trees seem to symbolize the possibility of looking at the world from a different point of view.
You take a ladder, you climb a tree, and you are detached from everything. It takes some courage to climb the wobbly ladders, or put your feet up on the lowest branches. But once you're high up in the tree, you can better see how absurd it looks down there. In the recent Less Frightened Girls series, Bo challenges her peers to attempt the climb. I think it says something about how Bo is in life, how she looks around and is amazed."
ruimteCAESUUR Since 1995, we make exhibitions of contemporary art, from 1999 at Lange Noordstraat 67 in Middelburg. Visual arts, in relation with contemporary art discourse, are always the guiding principle for an exhibition, but a historical and social perspective also determine our choices. ruimteCAESUUR stands for the autonomy of art and puts the artist’s oeuvre at the center of organizing its (solo) exhibitions. Young, novice and “arrived” artists are offered a platform to present their work in a non-commercial environment. Meeting and learning from each other play an important role within the annual planning of ruimteCAESUUR. The exhibitions in 2022 were organized in cooperation with several art initiatives: Lípa Art Collection and Luxfer Open Space, both from the Czech Republic, Platvvorm from Belgium and Slipvillan from Sweden. Exchange with Dutch artists ensures reciprocity in this process. We form a private initiative, without any profit motive, with Willy van Houtum and visual artist Hans Overvliet as its core; they form the board of the CAESUUR foundation. teamCAESUUR is more than completed by the visual artists Jorieke Rottier and Giel Louws. The unique composition of our team crosses borders of art practices, gender, and generations.
