Why is his name tupper?

The Bryant University mascot was named after Earl Tupper, president and founder of the Tupperware Corporation. Mr. Tupper donated his 220-acre Smithfield farm estate to Bryant (which, at that time, was called Bryant College) on October 24, 1967. Tupper, who had originally planned to sell his estate, was so impressed with Bryant that he decided to donate the land instead, allowing Bryant to move from its original location on Providence’s East Side to its current Smithfield, R.I. residence.

Originally nicknamed the Indians, Bryant became the Bulldogs in 1995. Out of appreciation for Earl Tupper and his generosity, when the school made the move, Tupper the Bulldog was born.

BULLDOG Hon. Ronald K. Machtley Bryant University President

athletic

nder the leadership of President Ronald K. Machtley, Bryant University has evolved into one of the most progressive and leading institutions of higher learning in New England.

U

Hardly a president who remains behind the scenes when it comes to intercollegiate athletics, Machtley — a former collegiate student-athlete in his own right — has been an ardent supporter of Bulldog sports since becoming the University’s seventh president in 1996. Mr. Machtley’s “New Century Plan For Excellence” initiated the most significant enhancements to the Bryant campus and community since the university’s move to Smithfield, and athletics was no exception. His New Century Plan saw the Bulldogs’ varsity athletics program expand to 22 teams with the addition of football, field hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and in 2005 men’s and women’s swimming. The addition of the new varsity programs brought about an overhaul of the university’s athletics facilities as well. These renovations are highlighted by the construction of Bulldog Stadium, which serves as the home of the Bryant football, soccer and lacrosse teams, as well as state-of-the-art fields for baseball, softball and field hockey. Changes to Bulldog athletics also inspired and supported the introduction of the Wellness Center, which provides Bryant with a health and fitness center that is second to none. Before assuming the presidency at Bryant in June of 1996, Mr. Machtley was best known as one of Rhode Island’s leading public servants. He served

as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1988 to 1995 and was a member of the House Armed Services Committee. He was also the ranking Republican on the Small Business Committee’s Minority Enterprise, Finance and Urban Development Subcommittee and co-founder of the first House Working Group on Mental Health. As a reflection of the esteem in which his congressional colleagues held him, Mr. Machtley was elected president of his congressional class during each of his terms in the House. Upon completion of his term in Congress, Mr. Machtley served as a partner in the international telecommunications law firm Wilkinson, Barker, Knauer & Quinn in Washington, D.C. He is admitted to practicing law in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Florida. President Machtley is a 1970 graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He earned a juris doctorate from Suffolk University in 1978 and served on active duty in the United States Navy. Mr. Machtley also completed 25 years of service as a captain in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He was a member of the board of visitors of the United States Naval Academy from 1992 to 1995 and currently serves on the boards of several corporations, as well as on the boards of many civic and charitable organizations. President Machtley and his wife, Kati, have two children and reside on the Bryant campus with their two dogs, Sandy and Paddington. Their son, Todd, is an undergraduate at Muhlenberg College. Their daughter, Erin, graduated from Villanova University in 1998.

Bill Smith Director of Athletics ill Smith came to Bryant University in August of 2006, after spending eight years at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He joined the Iowa State athletic department as compliance director in 1998 before being promoted to associate athletic director in 2002 and then senior associate athletic director in 2005.

B

At Iowa State, Smith managed oversight responsibilities for compliance, academic services, sports medicine, athletic training and strength and conditioning. Under his leadership and direction, Iowa State successfully developed an Academic Plan for Student-Athlete Academic Services, re-

sulting in ISU's 89 percent student-athlete graduation rate. A total of 290 student-athletes have earned Big 12 Conference Honor Roll recognition since 2001. While serving as compliance coordinator at ISU, Smith was appointed chair of the Big 12 Conference compliance coordinators group. During that time, he was also a member of the University's steering committee for NCAA Certification. Prior to joining the Iowa State staff, Smith served as executive associate director for compliance and championships for the Patriot League for one year. In that role, he managed 19 con-

ference events, was the conference's primary liaison with all coaches’ groups and directed league-wide compliance education programs. A native of Auburn, NY, Smith graduated from Colgate University in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in political science. During his time at Colgate, Smith played both football and lacrosse (1985-89) and was awarded the Tom Dodge Award in 1989 for exemplifying outstanding effort, determination and performance. Smith and his wife, Maura, have four children: Molly, Liam, Daniel and Marin.

life skills

STUDENTATHLETE ENRICHMENT ryant University is a recognized member of the NCAA’s CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. The program is designed to provide student-athletes with an enriched co-curricular experience, while assisting them in their pursuit of excellence in the classroom, on the playing field and in the community. The areas of focus for the life skills program are:

B

ACADEMICS, ACHIEVEMENT AND MENTORSHIP Student-athletes face many unique challenges in the areas of time management, study skills development, course balance and selection, and utilization of campus resources. The University and the department of athletics are sensitive to the high standards of success we expect from our student-athletes, and the support and mentorship provided to them is designed to enhance time management and study skill strategies, better preparing them for success. We also utilize tracking methods to ensure that all studentathletes are taking full advantage of the academic resources provided by the University. The mentorship of our studentathletes is designed to supplement — not replace —the academic advising offered by Undergraduate Programs. Additionally, all student-athletes are encouraged to develop relationships with the faculty and take advantage of the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) and the Writing Center on a weekly basis. ACE offers a variety of academic support resources, including learning skills assessments, learning labs, free tutoring services and learning specialists. In addition to ACE, study halls are mandatory for all freshmen student-athletes, as well as any upperclassmen with cumulative GPAs of 2.39 or below.

Bryant student-athletes have a long record of demonstrated academic success: almost half of our student-athletes earned a GPA of 3.0 or above last semester, while more than 30 percent made Dean’s List. The University’s Chi Alpha Sigma chapter recognizes junior and senior student-athletes who achieve excellence in the classroom (minimum 3.4 GPA), in the community and in the playing arena. PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT College life is a new experience. Bryant addresses the added demands for student-athletes in the areas of social pressures, academics and the transition to a higher level of athletic competition. Educational speakers focus on social issues (substance abuse, gambling, sexual assault and self-esteem), health and wellness issues, academic preparedness and campus community leadership. Value-based choices and the development of character are important components of the educational experience.

COMMUNITY SERVICE Community service programs coordinated by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the Peer Mentor Programs are opportunities to experience personal growth and development, as well as give back to the community at-large. Prospective members of Chi Alpha Sigma must fulfill induction requirements that include demonstrating positive community leadership and completing significant community service hours and projects. ATHLETIC SUCCESS As we endeavor to support our athletic program’s success on the playing field, Bryant University employs targeted programming in team leadership, communication, team chemistry and sports psychology as areas of focus. Additionally, the continued development of SAAC and its goal of garnering community support for all programs will continue to foster a sense of Bryant spirit and pride.

CAREER ENHANCEMENT Student-athletes have a unique co-curricular experience that emphasizes leadership, initiative, teamwork, goal setting, goal achievement and extensive time management. This component of the life skills program focuses on student-athletes taking advantage of all of these tools in their career search and in the workplace.

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK

Bulldogs Ready For NEC Second Year of Division I in 2010 The foundation for success is there. After years of consecutive NCAA appearances, the Bryant University softball program took a major leap a year ago into Division I waters. It was a challenge for a youthful squad that was coming off another NCAA playoff appearance in the program's final year of Division II competition. But for these Bulldogs, the move to the highest level of softball was a welcomed challenge; and one they wouldn't back down from. Behind a balanced offense, sound defense and top-notch pitching, the Bulldogs earned victories over Brown, Holy Cross, Central Connecticut and the University of Connecticut. Bryant finished the season with 11 wins overall and played in 14 one-run games. The Bulldogs were also involved in five extra inning contests.

son, Mass.) and junior Regina Burdo (Wayne, Pa.) once again form a solid infield defensively. After seeing action in 13 games as pitcher, including making five starts last season, sophomore Stephanie Barrett (Plaistow, N.H.) will make the move to first base to help fill the void of Dobmeier. Newcomers Talia Zizza (Reading, Mass. / Reading Memorial) and Brittany Lischinsky (Mahopac, N.Y/ Lakeland) will also compete for Dobmeier's position at first base. Lischinsky will also give the Bulldogs an added arm out of the bullpen. Newcomer Christina Eringis (Tewksbury, Mass./Central Catholic) is another infielder with an excellent bat that the coaching staff is excited about and could challenge for a spot at third base this season. Junior Regina Burdo

Now, with the first year of DI under their belts, the Bulldogs enter the spring season looking to take another step forward. Head coach LisaAnn Wallace, now entering her tenth season at Bryant, returns 10 letter winners including eight position starters in 2010.

squad started 37 of the team's 42 games and posted a 3.03 ERA. She fanned a Bryant record 180 batters while walking just 72 in 250 innings. One the many highlights on the season had to be the brilliant complete-game one-hitter in the team's win over Connecticut in April.

INFIELD

According to the coaching staff, newcomers Britanny Hart (North Andover, Mass. / Brooks School), Jennifer Jacob (Deer Park, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) and Kelly Cocco (Vernon, Conn. / Rockville) will make an immediate impact on the mound this spring.

The Bulldogs will need to replace the bat of Anne Dobmeier who is the only starter to graduate. Dobmeier led the Bulldogs with a .291 average last season and was a solid player in the field at first base with a .984 fielding percentage. Captain Shortstop Ali Chouinard (Swansea, Mass.), second baseman Laura Bowen (Hud-

CATCHER The Bulldogs are in good hands with veteran Ashley Coon (Leavittown, Pa.) back. The senior tri-captain is as good as they get both defensively and working with the pitching staff. A vocal competitor, Coon started all 42 games behind the plate, finishing the year with a .953 fielding percentage including just eight passed balls while gunning down 17 would-be base stealers.

PITCHER

Senior Ali Chouinard

The Bulldogs figure to be in good hands thanks to the return of Samantha Houseal (Mount Joy, Pa.) after an outstanding sophomore season. Houseal, now a captain of the Bulldog

Veterans Lindsay Martin (Methuen, Mass.) and Lauren McCart (Vorhees, N.J.) are back and expected to resume their starting spots in the outfield. Martin had an excellent freshman season in '09 where she hit .250 at the plate including five doubles and two triples. Classmate McCart was right behind with a .248 batting average including five doubles while driving in nine runs. Senior Kim Leonard (Milford, Mass.) is also expected to make the switch from third base to outfield and see quality time. They'll be joined by a host of talented players looking to crack the lineup, including junior Jenna Jeffrey (Scarborough, Maine / Catherine McAuley) and freshman Kate Murray (Fitchburg, Mass. /Fitchburg).

LISA-ANN WALLACE H EAD COACH • 205-201-1 (10TH SEASON) WESTFIELD STATE, ‘87

he winningest coach in the history of the Bryant University softball program, Coach Lisa-Ann Wallace has taken the Bulldogs to heights never seen prior to her arrival. Now entering her 10th season in 2010, Wallace led Bryant to five-straight NCAA tournament appearances, two times serving as regional hosts, two conference championship titles, three conference players of the year and one conference pitcher of the year.

T

In addition to the success on the diamond, Wallace's student-athletes have also succeeded in the classroom as well, including numerous academic all-conference recognitions and scholar-athlete awards and one NCAA Woman of the Year Honoree. As the program prepares for its second year competing at the Division I level and first as members of the Northeast Conference, there is no question coach Wallace has the program headed in the right direction and more success is sure to follow. The years of Division II came to a conclusion in fine fashion in 2008. The Bulldogs enjoyed a 30-16 record and again reached the Northeast-10 Conference tournament final series thanks to the masterful pitching of NE-10 Pitcher of the Year Janine Enos and qualified for the school's fifth-straight NCAA tournament. After inheriting a team that went 4-37 in 2000, Wallace and assistant Nancy Burgess took the Bulldogs from

perennial conference cellar-dwellers to a conference powerhouse. "It's been a privilege to coach here at Bryant," said Wallace." These studentathletes over the past nine years have created a tradition of winning both in the classroom and on the field. All incoming freshman should be honored to put on a Bryant uniform and continue the winning tradition." Prior to her arrival, the Bulldogs suffered through a 4-37 (1-17 in conference) season in 2000, but in Wallace's first year, the Bulldogs improved to 14-40 in 2001 and 22-24 in 2002. The turnaround certainly didn't go unnoticed as she was named the 2002 Northeast-10 Coach of the Year by her colleagues. But it was in 2004 that saw the program take a major step forward, not just within the conference, but on a regional level as well. Finishing 20-8 in the NE-10, the Bulldogs were honored with not only its first-ever NCAA tournament berth, but the right to host the tournament at the Bryant Softball Complex.

A year later in 2005, the Bulldogs finished with a 22-6 conference record and captured the Northeast-10 Conference tournament title for the first time and saw three student-athletes earn all-conference honors. The 2006 season saw Bryant capture its first-ever Northeast-10 regular season and second consecutive conference tournament championship with a 23-5 conference record (29-18 overall). With it, the Bulldogs headed off to yet another NCAA tournament and collected some serious hardware along the way as seven Bulldogs garnered all-conference honors by the Northeast-10. In 2007, the Bulldogs made their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, held at C.W. Post's campus in Brookville, NY. The Bulldogs defeated East Coast Conference champion Dowling College, the Northeast-10 Tournament champ UMass-Lowell and regional powerhouse Adelphi before coming up just short to host C.W. Post in the regional finals. It was the furthest the Bulldogs had ever advanced in the NCAA Tournament.

MEET THE COACHES During a four-year span, Bryant captured four major conference awards, including three NE-10 Conference Players of the Year. Infielder Deidre Kittridge, catcher Jordan Dargon and centerfielder Amanda Wilbur would win three consecutive conference player of the year honors from 20052007. A year later, in the Bulldogs’ last season at the DII level, Janine Enos was awarded the conference pitcher of the year award to make it four-straight.

compiled a 20-5 mark and placed second in the MASCAC behind perennial Division III power Bridgewater State. Wallace left Fitchburg State as the winningest coach in the program's history, arriving at Bryant in August of 2000.

In her nine seasons at Bryant (eight as a member of the Northeast-10 Conference), Wallace coached a total of 24 all-conference selections. In the six years before her arrival, only one Bulldog made the all-conference team (Lauren Smolinsky in 1995). A 1987 graduate of Westfield State (Mass.), where she was an all-conference catcher, Wallace started her head coaching career at Fitchburg State (Mass.) in 1995 and needed just three years to set the Falcons' single-season record for victories.

Her 1998 team finished 21-14-1, and Wallace was recognized as the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for her efforts. In 2000, Wallace and Fitchburg State registered the highest winning percentage of any college softball team in New England, as the Falcons

Senior Sentiments Favorite Team Memory: A favorite memory of being a student-athlete at Bryant was experiencing what it is like to be a Division II and Division I athlete. One of my favorite team memories was beating UConn 1-0 on its home field and the celebration and excitement we shared after the game. Making it to Regional’s freshman and sophomore year and the passion our team shared throughout those games was also a memory I will always remember. I also can’t forget about all the bus trips, plane rides, overnight stays in hotels, spring breaks, team dinners, surviving triple sessions together, ice baths, and the laughs we have shared everyday! What Black and Vegas Means to Me: When I wear the colors Black and Vegas I feel a great sense of pride. It is an honor to be able to play for those that have worn the colors before me and those that will wear it after me. These colors symbolize the University that I am so proud to have attended for four years. When I put on Bryant's Black and Vegas I know that I am representing the entire school community. I am so thankful for the ability to represent these colors and this school as a softball player while striving to exemplify everything that I have learned a Bryant student-athlete should stand for. When I walk on the Bryant Softball field: When I walk onto our beautiful field I feel privileged to be playing the game that I love. I think of everything it represents for me, from the many hours of practice and working hard each day to the thrill of competing and being with different teammates. Once you step on the field as a Bryant Softball player you are playing for the person next to you on the field, the people in the dugout, the people that have come before you and the fans and parents that support you. I think about how much the simple game between the foul lines has impacted my life so greatly. Advice to my teammates: Enjoy every moment on and off the field because your time at Bryant is going to go very fast. Work hard and give everything you have at practice and games as well as academically. Have a short memory when you are on the field because mistakes are going to happen. Most importantly enjoy each other because the girls you meet playing softball at Bryant will be your friends for life. Don’t forget to laugh and have fun! Childhood Idol and Why: My parents. I thought my mom was supermom. She takes care of everyone and is the most helpful, caring person. I'd consider myself lucky if I become half the person she is. My dad has always been the funniest person I know. He has the ability to make anyone laugh, especially me. I always wanted to have that effect on people.

2009 (Freshman): Made 13 appearances for the Bulldogs in her first year at Bryant including five starts on the year ... Held Colgate to five hits through four innings .... Had a season-best four strikeouts against Valparaiso ... Struck-out pair of batters against Yale and Maine.

Pre-Game Rituals: I always put my uniform pieces on in the same order. It was just a habit at first. Then when I realized it, it became a superstition and I wouldn't llet myself change it. I also rely heavily on music to get me in the right mindset to play. It's a great energizer.

Before Bryant: Steph is a 2008 graduate of Timberlane Regional High School where she was a four year member of the varsity softball team ... In 2008 she helped lead her team to win the State Championship ... That year she was named the Class L Player of the Year/MVP and was named to the New Hampshire All-State team ... She also played in two All-Star games. Steph was also a 2 year member of the varsity volleyball team ... She graduated top 10 in her class of 400 students and was a member of the French, Math, and National Honor Societies.

What the Seniors Have Taught Me: The seniors have really taught me about the value of teammates and how much we can all relate to each other just because of the things we endure together as a team. They've also taught me a lot about finding a balance in life. It's just as important to be dedicated to softball and classes as it is to make time for some fun.

I will miss all the fun Ali and I have had off the softball field. She could always make me laugh and her confidence in the field will be missed. I will miss Kim leonard's sense of humor. She would crack a joke at the perfect time and her work ethic with school work is inspiring. Was voted as: team’s best dancer most likely to become a reality star

MEET THE BULLDOGS Getting to Know Kim

KIMBERLY LEONARD

17

Senior • Outfield • 5-6 • R/R Milford, Mass / Milford

Favorite Team Memory: One memory is beating UConn on their field my junior year. Another memory was our team trip to Disney freshman year. Great memories are made from all the time we have spent together on our long bus trips, weekend games, spring breaks in Florida, many hours spent in the MAC and on the practice field and team bonding days.

2009 (Junior): Played a variety of positions during her junior year, emerging as the starting right fielder for the Bulldogs toward the end of the season ... Appeared in 32 games in 2009, starting 31 of those while playing three different positions ... Enjoyed a big day in a doubleheader against Wagner on March 29, hitting a two-run home run in game one and a threerun home run in game two to finish two-for-six with five RBI on the day. She finished tied for fourth on the team with four sacrifice bunts while stealing two bases on the year.

What Black and Vegas Means to Me: To me Black and Vegas means commitment, hard work and dedication. It means giving 100 percent all of the time and leaving nothing on the field. I thank of all of the players who came before me and set the standard of this program for what it is today. I am proud to wear Black and Vegas.

2008 (DNP): Leonard spent the 2007-08 school year studying in Miami, FL.

When I walk on the Bryant Softball field I think of: When I walk on the Bryant Softball field I think of the many hours spent on that field and the many memories I have made with my best friends. I think of all of the hard work and dedication that players before me have left on that field.

2007 (Freshman): Leonard played in 11 games as a freshman and started 7 of them. She had 2 hits and an RBI. Before Bryant: A 2006 graduate of Milford High School where she was a three year starter for the Scarlet Hawks ... Led Milford to a district semi-final as a senior ... Played on the varsity soccer and basketball teams where she was a letterwinner ... A fouryear member of the National Honor Society.

Advice to my teammates: These four years of college are going to fly by faster than you can imagine. Make the most of your time here at Bryant and take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. You can never get this time back so make the best of these four years. Dedication and hard work can take you anywhere you want to go in life and don’t let anyone or anything get in the way of your dreams and goals.

Personal: Kimberly Jean Leonard was born on November 19, 1987 ... She is the daughter of William and Debra Leonard ... A double major in accounting and finance.

Childhood Idol: My Childhood Idol is my older sister Michele. Michele demonstrated great qualities not only in sports, but in school as well. She taught me to always give 100% and that hard work pays off.

2009 (Freshman): In just her freshman season, Martin worked herself into the role of starting left fielder early in the year, starting 34 games while appearing in 38 for the Bulldogs in 2009 ... Made her mark both at the plate and in the field, finishing second on the team with a .250 batting average and a .303 on-base percentage ... Tied for third on the team in doubles with five, while knocking home eight runs and putting together six multi-hit games ... Helped the team to a win against Quinnipiac on April 5, going two-for-three with four RBI, including hitting her first career home run.

Pregame Rituals: Putting on eye black with Laura...smearing it while looking in her sunglasses...then we grunt at the same time. Before every game I pin a red ribbon on the inside my uniform which represents my dedication to a close high school teammate/friend who passed away in May 2009. Rest in Peace RJS. Pre-game rituals: On the bus ride to a game or just before a game, I listen to the song Two Step by the Dave Matthews Band. It pumps me up, and it helps to get me focused. Right before the game begins, I would put on eye-black and have somebody smudge the ends of the eye-black down my face. What the seniors taught me: I have learned so many things from these girls that I will take with me after my four years at Bryant. I have learned from them that even when things get tough, it will always get better. They have taught me to not be afraid to take risks on and off the field. I love you, girls, and I will miss you!
