DIRECTIONS TO THE BRYANT SOCCER COMPLEX Bryant University is easily accessible from major highways, Logan Airport in Boston and T.F. Green Airport in Warwick, R.I. The University is just 15 minutes from Providence, one hour from Boston and three hours from New York City. To reach Bryant, take Interstate 95 to Interstate 295. Take Exit 8B off I-295 and follow Route 7 North for one mile to the University entrance on the left. Turn right into the parking lot toward Bulldog Stadium. The Bryant Soccer Complex is adjacent to the football stadium.

ryant has enjoyed tremendous growth and success in athletics over the past few years with quite fruitful results, the apex of which came in 2008-09 with its move up to the Division I ranks.

On the field, bountiful Bulldog teams and individuals have qualified for a number of NCAA Championships. In its final four years of Division II competition, 55 teams qualified for the postseason, including all 22 sports in the Bulldogs’ unprecedented 2007-08 campaign. Six teams captured Northeast-10 Conference titles in Bryant’s final year of Division II play, three of them winning both the regular season and the league tournament. In 2007-08, Bryant athletic teams made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances, featured seven AllAmerica picks, 15 all-region selections, 60 allconference accolades, two conference Coach of the Year honors, two tournament MVPs and one conference Player of the Year en route to its fourth Northeast-10 President’s Cup Trophy in the last five years. That year alone, the Bulldogs boasted 24 academic all-conference selections.

Athletics in 2008-09, and to amazing results. With each of Bryant’s 22 programs earning its first Division I win, the Bulldogs knocked off teams from the Big East, Ivy League, America East, Patriot League, ACC, Atlantic 10 and CAA en route to a truly impressive year, both on the field and off. Four teams would finish .500 or better, including football, baseball and men’s lacrosse, while golf took first place at the New England Championships. The men’s lacrosse program received votes in both national polls while 124 student-athletes were named to the Northeast Conference Academic Honor Roll. Bryant will continue DI competition during its fouryear reclassification period before becoming a full member of the NEC in 2012-13. Bryant offers 22 varsity sports, with its most recent addition to the Bulldog community coming in 2005 with the debut of men’s and women’s swimming. In addition to its intercollegiate sports programs, Bryant also offers 11 club sports teams and a popular intramural program throughout the academic year.

The University saw the men’s lacrosse team earn a national No. 1 ranking in its final year of Division II, while women’s soccer enjoyed its highest national ranking in program history, grabbing the No. 2 spot. Other nationally ranked teams in 2007-08 included baseball, field hockey and men’s tennis. The Bulldogs opened up a new era of Bryant

Of those All-Americans, 28 of them were recognized as First Team selections.

Seven Bulldogs have earned Academic All-America honors.

Bryant has brought 44 regular-season conference titles back to campus.

The Bulldogs have won 41 conference tournaments since co-founding the NE-10.

Bryant student-athletes have earned 92 team and individual NCAA tournament berths.

Why is his name tupper? Tupper, the Bryant University bulldog mascot, was named after Earl Tupper, president and founder of the Tupperware Corporation. Mr. Tupper donated his 220acre Smithfield farm estate to what was then Bryant College on October 24, 1967. Tupper, who had originally planned to sell his estate, was so impressed with Bryant that he decided to donate the land instead, allowing Bryant to move from its original location on Providenceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s East Side to its current Smithfield, R.I. residence. Originally nicknamed the Indians, Bryant became the Bulldogs in 1995. Out of appreciation for Earl Tupper and his generosity, when the school made the move, Tupper the Bulldog was born.

Bryant student-athletes have won eight ECAC Championships among seven different sports.

highlight of Bryant University’s stellar athletic facilities, the Bryant Turf Complex was completed in 2006 to provide a new home for Bulldog field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse.

Made from Sprinturf technology, the field provides a consistent G-max level that trumps even the most prestine of natural grass fields. The playing surface is surrounded by a state-of-the-art track, rennovated in 2006 as part of the Turf Field project, which houses both the men’s and women’s track and field programs, while the field also serves as a practice facility for a number of Bryant teams. With the recent addition of stadium lights, the Complex also allows for athletic practice and competition throughout the seasons. A new scoreboard provides the Bulldogs with timing and scoring not just for field hockey, soccer and lacrosse, but also for track timing up to eight lanes. Meanwhile, Bryant’s recently installed bleachers accomodate its many fans — the Bulldogs drew a crowd of over 1,000 for its men’s lacrosse contest against crosstown Brown University in 2009. The Bryant Turf Complex is located adjacent to Bulldog Stadium, and the complex shares the stadium’s concourse, training room, concession stand and restrooms. An upgrade to the stadium’s concourse, completed in 2009, also gives Turf Field teams new and improved locker rooms of their own inside the complex, offering cutting edge video technology, coaches lockers and comfortable and accomodating team rooms. In addition to serving as the home of Bryant field hockey, soccer and lacrosse, the Bryant Turf Complex has played host to the Rhode Island Special Olympics, Relay for Life and several conference and NCAA championships.

The Elizabeth and•Malcolm Chace Wellness &•Athletic Center serves as the hub for the entire department of athletics. This 9,000-square foot facility houses Bryant’s fully resurfaced basketball and volleyball courts, the fitness center, Jarvis Varsity Weight Room, pool, excercise studio and two practice courts, and is also home to the athletic department staff.

The Fitness Center was completed in 2001 and is modeled after private-sector health clubs, featuring stateof-the-art selectorized circuit machines, treadmills, elliptical cross trainers, recumbent and virtual reality bikes, as well as lifecycles, rowing machines and stairsteppers.

nder the leadership of President Ronald K. Machtley, Bryant University has evolved into one of the most progressive and leading institutions of higher learning in New England.

Hardly a president who remains behind the scenes when it comes to intercollegiate athletics, Machtley — a former collegiate student-athlete in his own right — has been an ardent supporter of Bulldog sports since becoming the University’s seventh president in 1996. Mr. Machtley’s “New Century Plan For Excellence” initiated the most significant enhancements to the Bryant campus and community since the university’s move to Smithfield, and athletics was no exception. His New Century Plan saw the Bulldogs’ varsity athletics program expand to 22 teams with the addition of football, field hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and in 2005 men’s and women’s swimming. The addition of the new varsity programs brought about an overhaul of the university’s athletics facilities as well. These renovations are highlighted by the construction of Bulldog Stadium, which serves as the home of the Bryant football, soccer and lacrosse teams, as well as state-of-the-art fields for baseball, softball and field hockey. Changes to Bulldog athletics also inspired and supported the introduction of the Wellness Center, which provides Bryant with a health and fitness center that is second to none. Before assuming the presidency at Bryant in June of 1996, Mr. Machtley was best known as one of Rhode Island’s leading public servants. He served

as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1988 to 1995 and was a member of the House Armed Services Committee. He was also the ranking Republican on the Small Business Committee’s Minority Enterprise, Finance and Urban Development Subcommittee and cofounder of the first House Working Group on Mental Health. As a reflection of the esteem in which his congressional colleagues held him, Mr. Machtley was elected president of his congressional class during each of his terms in the House. Upon completion of his term in Congress, Mr. Machtley served as a partner in the international telecommunications law firm Wilkinson, Barker, Knauer & Quinn in Washington, D.C. He is admitted to practicing law in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Florida. President Machtley is a 1970 graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He earned a juris doctorate from Suffolk University in 1978 and served on active duty in the United States Navy. Mr. Machtley also completed 25 years of service as a captain in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He was a member of the board of visitors of the United States Naval Academy from 1992 to 1995 and currently serves on the boards of several corporations, as well as on the boards of many civic and charitable organizations. President Machtley and his wife, Kati, have two children and reside on the Bryant campus with their two dogs, Sandy and Paddington. Their son, Todd, is an undergraduate at Muhlenberg College. Their daughter, Erin, graduated from Villanova University in 1998.

BILL SMITH Director of Athletics ill Smith came to Bryant University in August of 2006, after spending eight years at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He joined the Iowa State athletic department as compliance director in 1998 before being promoted to associate athletic director in 2002 and then senior associate athletic director in 2005.

At Iowa State, Smith managed oversight responsibilities for compliance, academic services, sports medicine, athletic training and strength and conditioning. Under his leadership and direction, Iowa State successfully developed an Academic Plan for Student-Athlete Academic Services, resulting in ISU's 89 percent

student-athlete graduation rate. A total of 290 student-athletes have earned Big 12 Conference Honor Roll recognition since 2001. While serving as compliance coordinator at ISU, Smith was appointed chair of the Big 12 Conference compliance coordinators group. During that time, he was also a member of the University's steering committee for NCAA Certification. Prior to joining the Iowa State staff, Smith served as executive associate director for compliance and championships for the Patriot League for one year. In that role, he managed 19 conference events, was the conference's

primary liaison with all coaches’ groups and directed league-wide compliance education programs. A native of Auburn, NY, Smith graduated from Colgate University in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in political science. During his time at Colgate, Smith played both football and lacrosse (1985-89) and was awarded the Tom Dodge Award in 1989 for exemplifying outstanding effort, determination and performance. Smith and his wife, Maura, have four children: Molly, Liam, Daniel and Marin.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ENRICHMENT ryant University is a recognized member of the NCAA’s CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. The program is designed to provide student-athletes with an enriched co-curricular experience, while assisting them in their pursuit of excellence in the classroom, on the playing field and in the community. The areas of focus for the life skills program are:

ACADEMICS, ACHIEVEMENT AND MENTORSHIP Student-athletes face many unique challenges in the areas of time management, study skills development, course balance and selection, and utilization of campus resources. The University and the department of athletics are sensitive to the high standards of success we expect from our student-athletes, and the support and mentorship provided to them is designed to enhance time management and study skill strategies, better preparing them for success. We also utilize tracking methods to ensure that all student-athletes are taking full advantage of the academic resources provided by the University. The mentorship of our student-athletes is designed to supplement — not replace —the academic advising offered by Undergraduate Programs. Additionally, all student-athletes are encouraged to develop relationships with the faculty and take advantage of the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) and the Writing Center on a weekly basis. ACE offers a variety of academic support resources, including learning skills assessments, learning labs, free tutoring services and learning specialists. In addition to ACE, study halls are mandatory for all freshmen student-athletes, as well as any upperclassmen with cumulative GPAs of 2.39 or below. Bryant student-athletes have a long record of demonstrated academic success: almost half of our studentathletes earned a GPA of 3.0 or above last semester, while more than 30 percent made Dean’s List. The University’s Chi Alpha Sigma chapter recognizes junior and senior student-athletes who achieve excellence in the classroom (minimum 3.4 GPA), in the community and in the playing arena. PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT College life is a new experience. Bryant addresses the added demands for student-athletes in the areas of social pressures, academics and the transition to a higher level of athletic competition. Educational speakers focus on social issues (substance abuse, gambling, sexual as-

sault and self-esteem), health and wellness issues, academic preparedness and campus community leadership. Value-based choices and the development of character are important components of the educational experience. CAREER ENHANCEMENT Student-athletes have a unique co-curricular experience that emphasizes leadership, initiative, teamwork, goal setting, goal achievement and extensive time management. This component of the life skills program focuses on student-athletes taking advantage of all of these tools in their career search and in the workplace. COMMUNITY SERVICE Community service programs coordinated by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the Peer Mentor Programs are opportunities to experience personal growth and development, as well as give back to the community at-large. Prospective members of Chi Alpha Sigma must fulfill induction requirements that include demonstrating positive community leadership and completing significant community service hours and projects.

He earned his first Division I win on September 7th with a 2-0 win over Richmond, and played a nationallyranked Brown University squad to the wire b e f o r e f a l l i n g 1- 0 . Originally from Dublin, Ireland, Purcell was a member of the Irish national team for three years, during which time he competed in both the European and Wo r l d C u p C h a m p i onships in the former Soviet Union. I n 19 8 5 , P u r c e l l e n rolled at Providence College, where he was twice named an All-American and was a four-time All-New England selection. NATE MILLETTE ASSISTANT COACH

2ND SEASON

ate Millette is entering his second year as the assistant men's soccer coach. A natve of Scituate, RI, Nate graduated from Scituate High School in 2002. While there, Millette played four years of soccer, basketball and baseball.

Millette was a four-time all-conference soccer player in the open-division. As a senior, he was a member of the Rhode Island All-State team and was second in the league in points, scoring 18 goals and dishing out six assists while splitting time between sweeper and center midfield. Millette played for Northern Lightning, South Coast United and Mid-state Stompers Premier Clubs, collecting a total of six state cup titles. A graduate of UMass-Amherst in 2006, Millette majored in sport management. He was a walk-on freshman and a redshirt sophomore for the Minutemen. Millette was the head coach for the U-15 Girls Amherst town team and also assisted the Amherst High School boys team. Among other positions he held, Millette was an operations manager for the third annual SoccerFest sponsored by Adidas. He is currently working towards his MBA at Bryant.

RYAN LEVESQUE ASSISTANT COACH

1ST SEASON

yan Levesque joins the coaching staff of the Bryant University men's soccer team for his first season in 2009. Levesque comes to Smithfield from Brown University, where he spent three years serving as assistant men's soccer coach.

Over his trio of seasons with Brown, the Bears went a combined 35-12-5, winning the Ivy League in 2007 with a perfect 7-0 conference record. Brown also made two NCAA appearances during Levesque's tenure, advancing to the second round each time. Prior to his stint at Brown, Levesque served as the head coach of Suffield (CT) Academy from 2001-2005. His Suffield teams qualified for the New England tournament for three-straight years after being unable to achieve the feat in the previous seven seasons. His 2005 team also won the New England Prep School Championship.

VERMONT ‘96 conference player and finished his career No. 7 on Vermont's all-time goal scorers list. Levesque also has extensive professional playing experience, competing for the Connecticut Wolves, the Abbington Town United, English Third Division, the Buffalo Blizzard, the Vermont Wanderers, the Boston Bulldogs, the New Hampshire Phantoms and the Western Mass. Pioneers. He holds a USSF "A" License and the NSCAA Premier Diploma. Levesque currently resides in Smithfield, R.I. with his wife, Cassie, and daughter, Sophia.

Before arriving at Suffield, Levesque served as an assistant coach at University of Vermont from 1998 to 2001. He is currently the Bruno United Boys U15 and U16 premier team coach. A 1996 Vermont graduate, Levesque was a four-year starter for the Catamounts. The MVP of the 1995 New England All-Star Game, he was a two-time academic all14
