ryant has enjoyed tremendous growth and success in athletics over the past few years with quite fruitful results, the apex of which came in 2008-09 with its move up to the Division I ranks.

B

On the field, bountiful Bulldog teams and individuals have qualified for a number of NCAA Championships. In its final four years of Division II competition, 55 teams qualified for the postseason, including all 22 sports in the Bulldogs’ unprecedented 2007-08 campaign. Six teams captured Northeast-10 Conference titles in Bryant’s final year of Division II play, three of them winning both the regular season and the league tournament. In 2007-08, Bryant athletic teams made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances, featured seven AllAmerica picks, 15 all-region selections, 60 allconference accolades, two conference Coach of the Year honors, two tournament MVPs and one conference Player of the Year en route to its fourth Northeast-10 President’s Cup Trophy in the last five years. That year alone, the Bulldogs boasted 24 academic all-conference selections.

Athletics in 2008-09, and to amazing results. With each of Bryant’s 22 programs earning its first Division I win, the Bulldogs knocked off teams from the Big East, Ivy League, America East, Patriot League, ACC, Atlantic 10 and CAA en route to a truly impressive year, both on the field and off. Four teams would finish .500 or better, including football, baseball and men’s lacrosse, while golf took first place at the New England Championships. The men’s lacrosse program received votes in both national polls while 124 student-athletes were named to the Northeast Conference Academic Honor Roll. Bryant will continue DI competition during its fouryear reclassification period before becoming a full member of the NEC in 2012-13. Bryant offers 22 varsity sports, with its most recent addition to the Bulldog community coming in 2005 with the debut of men’s and women’s swimming. In addition to its intercollegiate sports programs, Bryant also offers 11 club sports teams and a popular intramural program throughout the academic year.

The University saw the men’s lacrosse team earn a national No. 1 ranking in its final year of Division II, while women’s soccer enjoyed its highest national ranking in program history, grabbing the No. 2 spot. Other nationally ranked teams in 2007-08 included baseball, field hockey and men’s tennis. The Bulldogs opened up a new era of Bryant

athletics Bryant University has produced 63 All-Americans over its Division II history.

Of those All-Americans, 28 of them were recognized as First Team selections.

Seven Bulldogs have earned Academic All-America honors.

Bryant has brought 44 regular-season conference titles back to campus.

The Bulldogs have won 41 conference tournaments since co-founding the NE-10.

Bryant student-athletes have earned 92 team and individual NCAA tournament berths.

Why is his name tupper? Tupper, the Bryant University bulldog mascot, was named after Earl Tupper, president and founder of the Tupperware Corporation. Mr. Tupper donated his 220acre Smithfield farm estate to what was then Bryant College on October 24, 1967. Tupper, who had originally planned to sell his estate, was so impressed with Bryant that he decided to donate the land instead, allowing Bryant to move from its original location on Providence’s East Side to its current Smithfield, R.I. residence. Originally nicknamed the Indians, Bryant became the Bulldogs in 1995. Out of appreciation for Earl Tupper and his generosity, when the school made the move, Tupper the Bulldog was born.

Bryant student-athletes have won eight ECAC Championships among seven different sports.

facilities BRYANT TURF COMPLEX

HOME OF BRYANT LACROSSE, FIELD HOCKEY & SOCCER

highlight of Bryant University’s stellar athletic facilities, the Bryant Turf Complex was completed in 2006 to provide a new home for Bulldog field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse.

A

Made from Sprinturf technology, the field provides a consistent G-max level that trumps even the most prestine of natural grass fields. The playing surface is surrounded by a state-of-the-art track, rennovated in 2006 as part of the Turf Field project, which houses both the men’s and women’s track and field programs, while the field also serves as a practice facility for a number of Bryant teams. With the recent addition of stadium lights, the Complex also allows for athletic practice and competition throughout the seasons. A new scoreboard provides the Bulldogs with timing and scoring not just for field hockey, soccer and lacrosse, but also for track timing up to eight lanes. Meanwhile, Bryant’s recently installed bleachers accomodate its many fans — the Bulldogs drew a crowd of over 1,000 for its men’s lacrosse contest against crosstown Brown University in 2009. The Bryant Turf Complex is located adjacent to Bulldog Stadium, and the complex shares the stadium’s concourse, training room, concession stand and restrooms. An upgrade to the stadium’s concourse, completed in 2009, also gives Turf Field teams new and improved locker rooms of their own inside the complex, offering cutting edge video technology, coaches lockers and comfortable and accomodating team rooms. In addition to serving as the home of Bryant field hockey, soccer and lacrosse, the Bryant Turf Complex has played host to the Rhode Island Special Olympics, Relay for Life and several conference and NCAA championships.

stadium expansion project

the

he Stadium Expansion Project, Bryant University’s newest addition to its athletic facilities, was completed on August 31, 2009, marking the addition of brand new, state-of-the-art locker room facilities for Bryant student-athletes as well as the completion of renovations to Bulldog Stadium and the Bryant Field House.

T

The 15-week project, which began in the Summer of 2009, included the addition of five new locker rooms, as well as two coaches’ meeting rooms and a fully equipped training room. Thanks to the generous donation of former Bulldog lacrosse player and Bryant University alumnus David Bierne, who made the Stadium Expansion Project possible, the men’s lacrosse program is the beneficiary of one of the nation’s newest and most impressive facilities. Nestled on the back concourse of Bulldog Stadium just steps from both of the team’s two practice and game fields lies a 1,685square foot locker room tailored specifically to the comforts and needs of the men’s lacrosse program. The modern and personalized meeting place features 49 individualized fine oak lockers, a comfortable lounge area, high-definition flatscreen television and personal shower facilities, and well as state-of-the-art audio/visual technology. The fully carpeted area, used solely by the men’s lacrosse program, also comes outfitted with its own equipment room and coaches’ office space. Designed by Edward Rowse Architects, this spacious area cultivates a true team atmosphere and provides the perfect space for team meetings, film review and a multitude of other activities, both in and out of season. The Stadium Expansion project also added brand new locker room facilities for the Bryant football, field hockey, women’s lacrosse and women’s soccer teams and stretches the length of the Bulldog Stadium concourse. The additions to the field house fullfill the needs of many Bulldog studentathletes, as the Bryant University Athletic Department continues to grow and expand not just on the road to full Division I membership, but also on its way to becoming a competitive player on the Division I scene. The addition was officially opened for the start of the 2009-10 fall seasons.

athletic

nder the leadership of President Ronald K. Machtley, Bryant University has evolved into one of the most progressive and leading institutions of higher learning in New England.

U

Hardly a president who remains behind the scenes when it comes to intercollegiate athletics, Machtley — a former collegiate student-athlete in his own right — has been an ardent supporter of Bulldog sports since becoming the University’s seventh president in 1996. Mr. Machtley’s “New Century Plan For Excellence” initiated the most significant enhancements to the Bryant campus and community since the university’s move to Smithfield, and athletics was no exception. His New Century Plan saw the Bulldogs’ varsity athletics program expand to 22 teams with the addition of football, field hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and in 2005 men’s and women’s swimming. The addition of the new varsity programs brought about an overhaul of the university’s athletics facilities as well. These renovations are highlighted by the construction of Bulldog Stadium, which serves as the home of the Bryant football, soccer and lacrosse teams, as well as state-of-the-art fields for baseball, softball and field hockey. Changes to Bulldog athletics also inspired and supported the introduction of the Wellness Center, which provides Bryant with a health and fitness center that is second to none. Before assuming the presidency at Bryant in June of 1996, Mr. Machtley was best known as one of Rhode Island’s lead-

ing public servants. He served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1988 to 1995 and was a member of the House Armed Services Committee. He was also the ranking Republican on the Small Business Committee’s Minority Enterprise, Finance and Urban Development Subcommittee and co-founder of the first House Working Group on Mental Health. As a reflection of the esteem in which his congressional colleagues held him, Mr. Machtley was elected president of his congressional class during each of his terms in the House. Upon completion of his term in Congress, Mr. Machtley served as a partner in the international telecommunications law firm Wilkinson, Barker, Knauer & Quinn in Washington, D.C. He is admitted to practicing law in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Florida. President Machtley is a 1970 graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He earned a juris doctorate from Suffolk University in 1978 and served on active duty in the United States Navy. Mr. Machtley also completed 25 years of service as a captain in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He was a member of the board of visitors of the United States Naval Academy from 1992 to 1995 and currently serves on the boards of several corporations, as well as on the boards of many civic and charitable organizations. President Machtley and his wife, Kati, have two children and reside on the Bryant campus. Their son, Todd, is a graduate of Muhlenberg College and their daughter, Erin, graduated from Villanova University in 1998.

the Academic Center for

Excellence

At Bryant University, student-athletes are expected to be exactly that — true student-athletes. And from the administration, to the coaches, to the support staff, Bryant Athletics strives for allaround excellence, not just on the court but in the classroom as well. Among the many academic services student-athletes are encouraged to take advantage of is the Academic Center for Excellence.

The Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) is dedicated to helping Bryant students achieve their goal of academic success. Learning specialists provide individualized assistance in college level study skill development for all students. Here, studentathletes can seek help in any area of study from one of Bryant’s 14 professional staff members, 30 trained peer tutors, 15 peer writing consultants and numerous other staff members trained in different subjects, areas and styles of learning.

All Bryant coaches are given updated academic progress and grade reports throughout the season while mandatory study hall hours are put in place for all students. The goal at ACE is to help students become self-reliant, independent, confident learners so they may successfully meet the demands of their chosen academic curricula. This is achieved through a myriad of services to support academic progress and find what learning and study strategies work

stages of the writing process, including brainstorming, outlining, thesis development and draft editing. Writing Reference Materials are provided for students seeking specific information on everything from how to use MLA and APA reference formatting to the different writing styles used in specific types of courses.

best for each student. ACE provides support for students working on individual assignments and for those working on group projects. Students requiring special accommodations are encouraged to read more about the center’s Learning Disability Services and make an appointment as soon as they register for courses each semester. Second language learners seeking extra support are encouraged to read more about our International and ESL Student Services. ACE also provides specialized services for Student Athletes.

Both ACE and The Writing Center offer Workshops for students throughout the semester and provide Faculty Services including class visits and tours of the center.

LEARNING LAB

ACE Peer Tutors are trained and certified by The College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and offer both one-on-one and group appointments for a variety of academic subjects. Learning Labs allow students to work with a Specialist or Peer Tutor on math, economics, finance or accounting assignments. The Writing Center, housed within ACE, provides oneon-one services with professional Writing Specialists and student Writing Consultants, who are also CRLA trained and certified. The ability to write clearly and effectively is a critical skill in any professional field and is a key to success in many courses. The Writing Center staff work with students at all

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK his year, as fourth-year head coach Mike Pressler will tell you, there are no moral victories for the Bryant University lacrosse team.

T

A loss is a loss. But after the team put up an impressive 10-5 record in its inaugural Division I campaign last season, that mentality, that mantra, is a testament to just how clear the goals of the 2010 Bulldogs are: they are not here to just put pressure on the best of the best – they are here to beat them. “We set some concrete goals for our program: once again to get to .500 – which is nine games with our packed slate of 17 contests – and also to pull off double-digit wins,” said Pressler. “To pull off 10 wins would certainly be a special accomplishment for the Bulldog lacrosse team. And with 11 of our 17 games on the road, that’s just six home games, the task becomes even more difficult as we look toward accomplishing one, if not both of those goals.” With a strong core of veterans back for another run at Division I competition and ready to lead arguably the most exciting class of newcomers in Bryant lacrosse history, the Bulldogs will look to stand tall in the face of one of the strongest schedules in the nation – a slate that features more games than any other team in the DI ranks. In fact, Bryant has so many games, 17 to be exact, that the team will have no scrimmages or preseason tests before taking on fourth-ranked North Carolina in its Feb.13 season opener. “We’ll have just 17 practices before we head down to North Carolina, where normally we would have four to five weeks and a couple of scrimmages under our belt at that point,” said Pressler. “But the way we set up this model with a packed slate of 17 games, we knew what we were getting into.” But the 2010 squad certainly has the talent and experience, as well as a fresh look stemming from a 12-man recruiting class, to continue the success the program achieved last season and more.

ATTACK The Bulldogs’ biggest battle, especially in the season’s early goings, will come up front, as junior John Truscello (Holbrook, N.Y.), sophomore Travis Harrington (Vestal, N.Y.) and freshman Peter McMahon (Wilton, Conn.) step in to fill the holes left by the graduation of last year’s entire first attack unit. “If you look at our team, the obvious void is the fact that we lost all three starting attackmen from a year ago,” said Pressler. “But in the unit that is set to take over, we have some terrific players. It will be a good mix of new guys and veterans, as well as some underclassmen who have put in their time and waited their turn – and their turn is now.” Six attackmen will look to contribute as needed and replicate the offensive production lost by the graduation of Zack Greer (42 goals, 26 assists), Kevin Hoagland (33g, 14a) and Bryan Kaufmann (30g,

12

15a), who were the team’s top three scorers a year

FACEOFF ago and represent more than half of Bryant’s 2009 total points (160). Harrington will lead those ranks after chipping in nine goals and seven assists in his rookie campaign. While the starting unit seems set, the other three – junior Chase Hayes (Greensboro, N.C.), freshman JK Poirier (Coatesville, Pa.) and freshman Kyle Crowley (Scituate, Mass.) – will look to chip in as needed. And that job as the fourth attack option could just fall to Poirier. “The starters are very clear cut, but the fourth attacker whose stock seems to rise every day is JK Poirier,” Pressler said. “And after being that fourth guy himself a year ago, Harrington is the one with the most experience despite being just a sophomore, and he is expected to step in as the leader of that group.”

MIDFIELD Bryant will look for much of its offensive prowess to come from a stacked midfield platoon, particularly from a top line that includes three of the team’s top four returning scorers. Junior Matt Larson (Cheshire, Conn.) represents the Bulldogs’ top returning scorer, finishing fourth on last year’s squad with 16 goals and six helpers in 15 starts. He will be joined on the first line by classmate Gary Crowley (Scituate, Mass.) and sophomore standout Max Weisenberg (Long Beach, N.Y.), who notched 10 goals with nine assists as a freshman. “We really like our first midfield in those three guys,” said Pressler. “They were really coming along as a unit last year. Matt Larson, Gary Crowley and Max Weisenberg will be our first midfield without question, and we will follow that up with a group of strong veterans in senior captain Bryant Amitrano (Valley Stream, N.Y.), junior Evan Roberts (West Cornwall, Vt.) and one outstanding freshman in Rhode Island native Ben Sternberg (North Kingstown, R.I.) on the second line.”

Without a doubt the most crucial retention for Pressler and the Bulldogs is fifth-year senior captain Andrew Hennessey (Wading River, N.Y.), who returns as the nation’s top faceoff specialist. Hennessey posted a nationally top-ranked .711 faceoff winning percentage in 2009, coming out ahead of his opposition on 248-of-349 opportunities at the X. The 2010 captain won more than half of the total faceoffs in all 15 games last season, winning 70 percent or better in 11 outings. Hennessey was so dominant that the next-highest faceoff winning percentage – that of Stony Brook’s Adam Rand – was just a 63.8 percent success rate. But he didn’t just win faceoffs. In fact, Hennessey also finished atop the team standings in ground balls with 118, good for third nationally (7.80 per game), and chipped in a goal and two assists. “If there is a player more accomplished in his career here at Bryant than Andrew Hennessey, I haven’t met him yet,” said Pressler. “Andrew’s debut at the faceoff X in 2009 was truly remarkable. His numbers – 71 percent with 100-plus ground balls against the level of competition he went up against – and just his consistency throughout that 15-game season has made Andrew one of the premier faceoff specialists in the country.” But even without his spectacular numbers, Hennessey is a threat to even the best of teams. “What matters most isn’t even what the statistics say, but how other teams game play against him,” added Pressler. “They really try to game plan a way to get the better of Andrew, and through 15 games a year ago, they couldn’t do it. Andrew proved to be very dominant against the toughest teams on our schedule and should continue to be one of our strongest assets in 2010.”

SHORTSTICK MIDFIELD Fellow fifth-year senior and two-time captain Matt McAllister (East Quogue, N.Y.) rejoins the Bulldogs

2010 Bryant University Lacrosse

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK healthy and ready to be a leader at the shortstick defensive midfield position after missing all of last season to injury. “The return of Matt McAllister as a fifth-year senior and a returning captain takes the unit from a year ago that we felt so strongly about and vaults it to an even higher level for the 2010 season,” said Pressler. “Matt is arguably our best overall athlete and he is 100 percent healthy from his knee injury a year ago.”

and outstanding wing players on the faceoff.”

CLOSE DEFENSE The true strength of the 2010 Bulldogs lies in the return of its fully intact and highly experienced first defensive unit of senior Matt Murnane (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and juniors Joe Rauchut (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Ryan Mahoney (Wading River, N.Y.).

fensemen complement one another exquisitely.” Close defense is without question the deepest position for the Black and Gold, and a number of other Bulldogs will be in the mix for significant playing time. Among them is junior Harrison Tull (Annapolis, Md.), who appeared in all 15 games last season with 12 ground balls after transferring to Bryant from Colgate University. Join-

Don’t be surprised to see him playing some offense, too — he is that versatile and that dynamic, according to his head coach.

Pressler again gave his Bulldogs a schedule they could “hang their hats on,” a fact that will be more evident than ever come February 13, when Bryant opens up its second season of Division I action against the fourthranked Tar Heels in Chapel Hill.

“Rob has just been so steady, so rock solid throughout his career at Bryant,” said Pressler. “He and McAllister make a great duo at their position.”

“James will see a lot of playing time,” said Pressler. “He is a solid athlete and a very smart player, and he has earned the opportunity to get some minutes.”

LONGSTICK MIDFIELD One of four captains this season and the only junior elected to the position, Anthony Iannello (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) is the obvious choice for the Bulldogs at the longstick middie position. Iannello recorded 56 ground balls in his 2009 campaign with 26 caused turnovers, good for second on the squad. He also added a goal and a trio of assists in 15 appearances. Junior Rob Maiorano (Easton, Conn.) (19 ground balls, 9 caused turnovers, 3 goals), will play opposite him, and the two complement each other well. “We’re led at this position by our junior captain and three-year starter Anthony Iannello,” said Pressler. “Together, he and Rob Maiorano — as it is with McAllister and Stufano at their position — give us two quality players in the long pole ranks. Anthony and Rob are very athletic, great checkers

Backing up Love will be junior Alec Rosenbruch (Nashua, N.H.) and outstanding freshman John Wallace (Winchester, Mass.).

THE SCHEDULE

McAllister will be joined by junior Rob Stufano (Garden City, N.Y.), who returns as a three-year starter after dishing out seven helpers and picking up 22 ground balls last season.

And when they need a break, sophomore James Devine (New City, N.Y.) is ready to jump in after spending much of last year waiting his turn and learning from the sidelines.

Love between the pipes,” said Pressler. “Jameson has had an outstanding preseason here in 2010. He is seeing the ball very well and his clearing skills have improved greatly from a year ago. Jameson also is emerging as one of our key vocal leaders in the defensive end. Our coaching staff couldn’t be more pleased with his progress to date.”

Touted by Pressler as one of the best defensemen he’s ever coached, Murnane anchors the unit after picking up 58 ground balls and causing 43 turnovers (No. 2 in the nation) during his junior season in 2009. Murnane will be scripted with the job of defending the opponent’s top attackman every time out, and with an uncanny ability to put the ball on the ground, be it through a check or a knocked-down pass, Murnane might just have the best stick skills on the team, a quality that will be quite an asset against squads like North Carolina, Brown, Hobart and Army. “Arguably, our best overall player is four-year starter Matt Murnane – this is not news to anybody,” said Pressler. “He will draw the No. 1 attackman each and every week. Matt is as versatile and complete a defenseman as I have ever coached.” But it is the deadly combination of Murnane, Mahoney and Rauchut that has been shutting down opposing offenses since 2008. “Joe is our physical left-handed stopper where Ryan is more of a checker and cover guy,” said Pressler. “But like any great attack unit, these three de-

ing Tull in the fight for minutes is sophomore Tim Clinton (Darien, Conn.), who had a spectacular rookie season for the Bulldogs, as well as a pair of outstanding freshmen in Mason Poli (Downingtown, Pa.) and Glenn Maiorano (Easton, Conn.).

GOALKEEPER Sophomore Jameson Love (Darien, Conn.) returns to man the pipes for the Bulldogs in 2010 after a stellar freshman campaign that left him ranked nationally in goals against average (8.75; No. 22) and save percentage (.559; No. 20). Love started all 15 games, playing in all but 36 minutes. He posted 160 stops and faced 459 shots, going 10-5 on the year. “For the second year in a row, we will open up our season with Jameson

“We opened up our Division I campaign in Year One against [top-ranked] Virginia and in Year Two we head south again to face off against another quality opponent in UNC,” said Pressler. “So for the second year in a row, it’ll be another ambitious opener for the Bulldogs, to say the least.” Following the opener is Bryant’s home debut, coming against the University of Vermont, one of two America East teams the Bulldogs will take on (Stony Brook). The Black and Gold will then face off against a tough Army side for the second-straight season and will later take on fellow Patriot League member Holy Cross. The Bulldogs take on a trio of Ivy League opponents (Brown, Yale and Dartmouth) and four members of their future home in the Northeast Conference (Wagner, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac). Bryant will also make return trips to Bellarmine and Presbyterian and add first-time opponents Fairfield, Providence and Hobart to the 2010 slate.

HEAD COACH MIKE PRESSLER

MIKE PRESSLER HEAD COACH FOURTH SEASON »

WASHINGTON & LEE 82

n his first two seasons as the head coach of the Bryant University men's lacrosse program, Mike Pressler transformed Bulldog lacrosse from a successful Division II team to a dominant Division II team, guiding the Bulldogs to a pair of Northeast-10 Conference titles and one NCAA playoff berth. Last year, in his third season at the program's helm, Pressler elevated the Bulldogs' game once again, turning a dominant Division II team into a feared Division I squad, capable of contending with and upsetting some of the best teams in the nation.

I

In just his third season in Smithfield, R.I., Pressler led the Bulldogs into the Division I ranks and into a degree of success that shocked the DI lacrosse world. The 2009 Bulldogs faced off against such national powerhouses as Maryland, Virginia, Brown, Army, Penn and Loyola (Md.), earning a 105 overall record and recognition in both national polls throughout their inaugural campaign. Pressler's Bulldogs earned key wins over opponents such as Penn (15-11), Lehigh (14-13), Bellarmine (14-4) and Dartmouth (12-9), en route to becoming the biggest upset story of the season. Pressler's efforts and contributions, not just with Bryant but throughout his illustrious coaching career, were recognized in September 2008 when he was named head coach of the 2010 U.S. Men's National Team.

Career record » 264-115 (25 seasons) Record at Bryant » 35-13 (three seasons) .697 overall winning percentage

Before making the move to Division I, Pressler led his Bulldogs to a 14-4 overall record in 2008, en route to the program's second conference title, defeating top-ranked Le Moyne College in Syracuse, N.Y. on May 4, 2008. Bryant sealed its 14th win with the victory, setting a new school record. The 5-4 win also earned the Bulldogs their first-ever NCAA tournament berth. Bryant has posted a 35-13 record in three seasons under Pressler, who guided the Bulldogs to an 11-4 record in his first season in 2007. In his first year with Bryant, Pressler's Bulldogs earned the program's first-ever Northeast-10 Conference regular-season title and top seed in the conference tournament. Bryant tied what was then a school record with 10-consecutive wins during the 2007 campaign, posting an undefeated 9-0 league mark. Among those wins was an overtime victory over defending national champion Le Moyne, snapping the Dolphin's 70-game win streak. The Bulldogs, who ranked as high as No. 4 nationally in 2007, gained the No. 1 regional ranking for the entire month of April. Previously the head coach at Duke University for 16 seasons, Pressler was named Bryant's new skipper on August 5, 2006, becoming just the second coach in program history. In his years in Durham, N.C., Pressler compiled a 153-82 overall record at Duke, leading the Blue Devils to three Atlantic Coast Conference championships, 10 NCAA tournament berths and an appearance in the 2005 Division I men's lacrosse championship game. In 2005, Pressler earned the nation's top coaching honor after directing the Blue Devils to an NCAA single-season record 17 wins against three defeats, being named the National Coach of the Year. HEAD COACH MIKE PRESSLER the 2005 squad established a new NCAA record for the best win total turnaround (up from 5 wins in 2004). Duke led the nation in scoring offense, averaging over 13 goals per game, and finished the year ranked second in the national poll. During his tenure at Duke University, the men's lacrosse program posted a 100 percent graduation rate. Pressler arrived at Duke as one of the most successful NCAA Division III lacrosse coaches in the country. In five seasons at Ohio Wesleyan University, Pressler led the Battling Bishops to the NCAA finals in three-straight seasons and the semifinals twice. He was named the USILA's Division III Coach of the Year in 1987 and the North Coast Athletic Conference's Coach of the Year three times. Pressler served as an assistant at Army under Jack Emmer during the 1984-85 season. Before that, he guided VMI to a 7-4 record in his only season as head coach at the Lexington institute. In 2002, Pressler served as an assistant coach on the U.S. Men's Lacrosse National Team that captured the gold medal at the International Lacrosse Federation World Championship and has been named the head coach for the 2010 Team USA. A three-time ACC Coach of the Year and recipient of the 2005 USILA's F. Morris Touchstone Award as the National Coach of the Year, Pressler's overall head coaching record stands at 264-115 in 25 seasons. He ranks among the nation's top 10 active coaches in both career victories (No. 8) and overall winning percentage (No. 8). Pressler stands at No. 21 among the most winningest coaches of all time (by percentage) and is No. 12 all-time by win count. A 1982 graduate of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., Pressler was a four-year starter for both the football and lacrosse teams. A First Team Division Kodak All-American nose tackle in football, a four-year starter in lacrosse and team captain for both as a senior, Pressler was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2001. Pressler was also inducted into the Wilton (Conn.) High School Hall of Fame in 1998 and was inducted into the Connecticut Sports Hall of Fame in January 2010. A native of Wilton, Connecticut, Pressler and his wife, Susan, live in Smithfield with their two daughters, Janet, 17, and Maggie, 11.

THE COACHING STAFF Peter Toner ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH » THIRD SEASON Springfield ’03 ssociate head coach Peter Toner enters his third season on the Bryant University men’s lacrosse coaching staff under Mike Pressler in 2010.

Lyons enjoyed their best campaign in school history, going 9-7-1 and earning a spot in the ECAC Division III championship game. In 2007, three players earned all-conference recognition with six earning academic all-conference honors and one earning scholar-athlete all-America honors.

Toner played an integral role in guiding the Bulldogs through their inaugural Division I season in 2009, a season that saw the Black and Gold go 10-5. In his first season with the Bulldogs, the men's lacrosse team posted a school-record 14 wins, capturing the Northeast-10 Conference Championship and first-ever berth into the NCAA tournament.

A 2003 graduate of Springfield College, Toner helped lead the Pride to three NCAA tournament appearances as a standout defenseman. Named team captain, Toner was an NEILA all-region selection and was selected to the National Strength and Conditioning Association All-America team. He also participated in two USILA all-star games during his playing career.

A

Toner comes to Bryant from nearby Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., where he was the head men's lacrosse coach in 2006 and 2007. In his first season, the

Following graduation, Toner served as a graduate assistant men's lacrosse coach at his alma mater for two seasons while earning his master's degree in physical education. While an assistant, the Pride captured two league championships and qualified for one NCAA Division III tournament championship.

Matt Zash ASSISTANT COACH » FIRST SEASON Duke ’06 att Zash joins the Bryant coaching staff as an assistant coach in 2009. Thirty nations representing five continents will participate in the biggest World Championships to date as the United States looks to get back to its winning ways. The U.S. had won the last six world titles prior to the 2006 event. Leading Team USA toward that goal will be Bryant University head coach Mike Pressler. Among the 23 players on the active roster is another Bulldog coach in first-year assistant Matt Zash (Duke ’06). Pressler, who enters his fourth season at Bryant, was an assistant coach for the 2002 U.S. team that won the International Lacrosse Federation (one of two organizations that merged to form the FIL) World Championship in Perth, Australia.

"This opportunity to be the head coach of Team USA is the greatest honor of my professional career," said Pressler after being named head coach in September 2008. "The U.S. is certainly the underdog going over to England and this will be the ultimate challenge for the Team USA coaches." Pressler has had a very successful career as a collegiate lacrosse coach, compiling a 264-115 record in 25 seasons. Bryant has gone 35-13 under Pressler over the last three seasons, reaching the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history in the spring of 2008 and going 10-5 last season in the program’s first year at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Smithfield, R.I., Pressler won more than 150 games at Duke University, leading the Blue Devils to 10 NCAA tournament berths and a trip to the NCAA championship game in 2005. He also had successful stints as head coach at Ohio Wesleyan and VMI. “Mike is an outstanding coach who commands great respect throughout the lacrosse community,” said Bryant athletic director Bill Smith. “He has enjoyed extreme success everywhere he has been and will undoubtedly continue to do so in this new endeavor. The Bulldog community supports Mike in this well-deserved honor." "US Lacrosse and our Men's National Teams Committee are very enthusiastic about the appointment of Mike Pressler as the 2010 U.S. men's team's head coach," said Jody Martin, Men's Division director for US Lacrosse. "We feel very confident that Mike is the right guy to lead our quest to win the gold medal in Manchester." The U.S. team won the silver medal at the 2006 ILF World Championship, the first time it had not won gold at the quadrennial event since 1978. Canada

defeated the United States, 15-10, in the 2006 championship game, snapping a 38-game win streak in international competition. Tryouts for the U.S. Men’s National Team took place on the campus of Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I. during the summer of 2009. Team USA will play its final training exhibition on Thursday, July 8 when it takes on the MLL All-Stars at Harvard Stadium in Boston, Mass. Defender Mouthguards Your best defense against sports related dental injury and concussion. Impression Fit Extreme Comfort Maximum Protection

Breathe Easy Speak Clearly Play with Confidence

“At Bryant University we practice how we play; full-contact and full-speed. Unfortunately, with that come the inevitable big-hit collisions. That’s why we make sure the Bryant Bulldogs only use the very best equipment. Concussions in lacrosse occur at an alarming rate. Protection against head injuries are my biggest safety priority. That’s why we use Defender Mouthguards. Never before have I seen the quality and customer service that Defender provides. Their completely custom and streamline designed mouthguards provide our student-athletes with optimal protection, while ensuring their ability to communicate clearly, breathe easily, and perform at the highest level. Most importantly, Defender Mouthguards keep our student-athletes off the IR, on the field, and in the classroom. Mike Pressler Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach, Bryant University / Team USA

The Bryant Bulldogs only use the very best. We only use Defender Mouthguards.”
