Dat Brugge op gebied van cultureel erfgoed een speler van wereldformaat is, hoeft geen betoog. De binnenstad is integraal door de Unesco erkend als werelderfgoed en wordt jaarlijks bewonderd door miljoenen toeristen. De Brugse musea weten met de vaste collecties en de vele tentoonstellingen honderdduizenden kunstliefhebbers uit binnen- en buitenland te trekken. Vertrekkend vanuit de kracht van dit patrimonium wil de Stad Brugge ook een levende en eigentijdse cultuurstad zijn, zoals dat pregnant naar voren kwam in 2OO2 toen Brugge Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa was en in 2OO5 toen met Corpus ’O5 de aftrap werd gegeven van een ambitieuze, vijfjaarlijkse cyclus van cultuurfestivals. De wens van het stadsbestuur om het befaamde erfgoed steeds opnieuw actueel te maken, hebben Musea Brugge in 2OO3 vertaald in Young Primitives – een project waarbij op tientallen plaatsen in de historische binnenstad een keur aan internationale graffitikunstenaars hun visie hebben gegeven op het werk van de wereldbefaamde Vlaamse Primitieven. Het doorslaand succes van Young Primitives smaakte naar meer. In nauwe samenwerking tussen Musea Brugge en Brugge Plus is Kantlijnen ontstaan: een tentoonstelling binnen en buiten museale muren, waarin onderzocht én getoond wordt wat kant, dat eerder een oubollig imago heeft, betekent in de internationale wereld van kunst, design en mode. Namens het stadsbestuur van Brugge en namens het bestuur van Brugge Plus willen wij hier alle betrokkenen bij het fascinerende project Kantlijnen – en in de eerste plaats de directies en medewerkers van de Brugse musea en Brugge Plus - van harte danken voor al hun werk en inspanningen. Lieve Desmidt en Sibylla Goegebuer van Musea Brugge waren samen met Filip Strobbe en Peter Grymonprez van Brugge Plus de drijvende krachten van de in veel opzichten complexe organisatie. De bepaald niet gemakkelijke opdracht om alle kunstwerken, objecten en creatieopdrachten in mooie, maar complexe historische gebouwen te integreren was in de inspirerende handen van vormgevers Toon van Deijne en Hil Driessen. Ook danken wij Miegiel Loeffen die de intrigerende tekst van deze publicatie voor zijn rekening nam.

Een bijzonder woord van dank gaat uit naar de talrijke bruikleengevers die werken hebben afgestaan, en niet minder naar alle kunstenaars, vormgevers en modeontwerpers die specifieke creaties voor Kantlijnen hebben uitgewerkt – zonder hun medewerking was Kantlijnen nooit gerealiseerd. De (media)sponsors die de tentoonstelling, de modeshow en de publicaties hebben ondersteund zijn we erkentelijk, evenals stadsdiensten, bedrijven en particulieren die het project steunden door materiaal en expertise ter beschikking te stellen. De ondersteuning van het project door de Vlaamse Gemeenschap, zowel via minister Geert Bourgeois bevoegd voor toerisme als middels zijn voor cultuur bevoegde collega minister Bert Anciaux, is van cruciaal belang geweest om het project in zijn huidige ambities vorm te geven. Maar het laatste blijk van dank en waardering gaat uit naar Hanneke Kamphuis en Hedwig van Onna, specialisten op gebied van kunst en design en gezamenlijk gastcurator van Kantlijnen. Zij hebben ruim drie jaar geleden op vraag van de museumdirectie het concept van Kantlijnen uitgeschreven en hebben sindsdien met deskundigheid en niet aflatend enthousiasme deze markante combinatie van historisch kant en eigentijds design inhoudelijk uitgewerkt en begeleid. Met hen hopen en verwachten wij aan te tonen dat Brugge niet alleen met het historische kant geassocieerd moet worden, maar dat dit bijzondere Brugse erfgoed steeds weer een bron van inspiratie kan zijn voor nieuwe generaties kunstenaars en vormgevers.

It goes without saying that when it comes to the cultural heritage, Bruges is a world player. Indeed, UNESCO has recognised the whole of the inner city as a world heritage site and its beauty is admired by millions of tourists each year. With their permanent collections and many exhibitions, the museums in Bruges manage to attract hundreds of thousands of Belgian and international art lovers. On the basis of this powerful heritage, the City of Bruges also aims to be a modern, dynamic city, a fact that was made abundantly clear when it was appointed European Cultural Capital in 2OO2 and when Corpus ‘O5 kicked off an ambitious fiveyearly cycle of cultural festivals. In 2OO3 Musea Brugge responded to the city council’s desire to constantly update its famous heritage by holding the Young Primitives exhibition, a project in which a wide range of international graffiti artists presented their vision of the work of the world-famous Flemish Primitives at dozens of locations all over the historical inner city. The resounding success of Young Primitives led to further plans for new initiatives. The result, based on a close collaboration between Musea Brugge and Brugge Plus, is Kantlijnen, an exhibition inside and outside museum walls that examines and demonstrates the role that lace plays in the international world of style, design and fashion despite its somewhat dated image.

On behalf of Bruges city council and the board of Brugge Plus, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all those involved in the fascinating Kantlijnen project – and in the first place the management and staff of the museums in Bruges and Brugge Plus – for all their work and effort. The driving forces behind the organisation of this exhibition, which was complex in many ways, were Lieve Desmidt and Sibylla Goegebuer of Musea Brugge together with Filip Strobbe and Peter Grymonprez of Brugge Plus. The difficult task of integrating all the works of art, objects and creative assignments into beautiful and complex historical buildings was entrusted to the designers Toon van Deijne and Hil Driessen. We would also like to thank Miegiel Loeffen who was responsible for writing the intriguing text for this publication. A special word of thanks goes to all those who were willing to loan their works to us, and not least to all the artists, designers and fashion designers who developed special creations for Kantlijnen; without them Kantlijnen would never have been realised.
