Welcome to the Bozeman Daily Chronicle’s Summer Activity Guide! Every year, we try to help you get a jump on mapping out your kiddos’ summer calendars. Though it’s still wintertime, it’s never too early to start planning for those months when school is out, and many local summer camps are just beginning to release their schedules and take reservations for coveted spots.

Why not give your kids a summer they’ll never forget – a summer filled with building meaningful friendships and cultivating values that will last a lifetime? And don’t worry, many of the camps listed on these pages provide scholarships to keep family costs down.

Now, getting kids to explore the outdoors in the beautiful, warm summer months is easy. But keeping

them engaged in experiential learning activities outside the classroom can sometimes be a challenge. Fortunately, the camps in this guide are structured to keep kids busy and active — whether it’s for a few hours, an entire day, or several weeks. This year’s camps have a little something for every adventurer –from sports and dance to art, acting, and music.

And these days, it’s no secret that children are spending massive amounts of time on their mobile devices instead of venturing outdoors, so it has never been more important to get children outside in a healthy social setting. Studies show that, when children adopt sedentary lifestyles, they tend to lose motivation and even imitate what they see on their screens. The lack of activity can have serious impacts

SUMMER 2024

Activity GUIDE

on children’s health, including an increased chance of developing obesity, diabetes, and attention deficit disorders.

On average, kids spend seven or more hours a day in front of screens like cell phones, tablets, computers, and TVs. Children who spend more time outdoors are more likely to respect nature and the environment when they become adults, and they tend to experience long-term mental, emotional, and physical benefits. Exposure to the sun and absorption of vitamin D are important for kids, too, as these factors help bone development and promote strong immune systems.

Being outside can also improve children’s social and critical-thinking skills, and there is no better place to utilize those skills than at summer camp. Children will practice

communicating and problem solving with their fellow campers, learning valuable lessons that they may use frequently throughout adulthood. Meeting new people and making friends are experiences that allow children to build a sense of selfconfidence. To set children up for a successful future, it’s a wise move to encourage kids to enjoy the fresh air among friends – and it’s not tough to do that in an idyllic setting like the state of Montana.

So, take the next step and give your child the opportunity to play, learn, socialize, and grow in a summer program. We hope our 2024 Summer Activity Guide will make this process a bit easier for you and remove some of the guesswork involved in camp research. Go ahead and jump in with us. A spectacular summer awaits.

OUTDOOR

Summer CAMPS

With everything from bird watching and woodworking to skill-building initiatives and STEM activities on their itineraries, these camps are jam-packed with youthful fun. See what excitement and adventure is around the corner for your camper this summer – all in the great Montana outdoors.

RAVENWOOD OUTDOOR

LEARNING CENTER is all about healthy kids, families, and communities. Its mission is to “cultivate health, passion for learning, and stewardship of ecological and human communities through nature-based mentoring of youth, families, and adults.”

Ravenwood founders Laura Strong and Brett Holmquist have deep roots in outdoor mentoring. Both grew up with expansive backyards in the big, wide country of Montana. As young professionals in Yellowstone, doing biological research and conducting education programs for youth, the couple witnessed a fundamental lack of nature connection among several of the young people they encountered. For many of the kids, these programs served as their first serious outdoor adventures (even those who grew up in Montana). Strong and Holmquist also witnessed

a noticeable shift in awareness and appreciation among their students as they were making connections on the land. After seeing firsthand what is termed “nature deficit disorder” emerging, they decided to meld their talents in the science and education fields to do something about it, and Ravenwood was born.

CAMP

CONNECT

is run by Ravenwood Outdoor Learning Center. Designed as a small group experience for just 20 kids, Camp Connect takes place at the center’s main camp between Columbia Falls and Whitefish. Kids will build forts, crawl through the bushes to track bugs, catch fish, eat wild berries, and play games, all while making new friends. Camp Connect is open on a first-come, first-served basis. There are no scholarships offered. Serving kids ages 7 to 11, the camp meets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, July 29 and 30, and Aug. 5, 6, 12, and 13.

MUSIC AND NATURE CAMP

is a partnership between North Valley Music School and Ravenwood. Campers ages 8 to 14 will receive high-level music instruction each day. There are three music sections available: strings, percussion, and ukulele. All kids will spend the first

two hours and the last hour of the day together for group activities, games, songs, crafts, wilderness skill building, stories, and nature connection time. The middle of each day will be a breakout time for music creation and instruction. Campers must provide their own instruments, with the exception of the percussion section. Scholarships are available for this camp. Camp meets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 17 to 24.

WILDERNESS KIDS CLUB

is designed to teach campers valuable life skills through nature exploration. The Ravenwood Outdoor Learning Center camp holds three sessions for kids ages 6 to 12. All groups meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Session one is held on Mondays and Tuesdays, June 17 to July 2. Session two is held on Wednesdays and Thursdays, June 19 to Aug. 15. Session three is held on Mondays and Tuesdays, July 29 to Aug. 13. Campers will learn firemaking and tending skills, basketry, woodworking, animal and bird tracking, and group communication skills. Scholarships are available. Check out more details and signup options for all three camps by visiting Ravenwood’s website at https://ravenwoodolc.org or by calling (406) 260-8620.

MONTANA CONSERVATION CORPS’

Youth Expeditions are designed to inspire young people through hands-on conservation service to be “leaders, stewards of the land, and engaged citizens who improve their communities.” Children engage in challenging conservation projects that help them build confidence and strengthen their communication skills. This expedition is great for teens who enjoy physical, rewarding, and skillbuilding challenges. Expeditions are for Montana high schoolers ages 14 to 18, and run during the summer months of June, July, and August, in Kalispell, Bozeman, and Helena. Participants can expect to gain at least 64 volunteer hours, as well as leadership, technical, and communication skills. Only Montana residents may apply. For more information, visit www.mtcorps.org/ joinmcc/youth or call (406) 5864475.

MONTANA OUTDOOR SCIENCE SCHOOL (MOSS)

has a mission to “inspire curiosity, awareness, and understanding of nature and science through quality educational experiences.” The MOSS founders shared a vision that “lives are enriched when we have a greater understanding of our natural

SUMMER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2024 4

surroundings.” MOSS serves more than 6,000 students each year through year-round courses for all ages and backgrounds, including outreach programs to 44 schools; 11 weeks of summer camps for more than 1,000 students; and free family festivals that celebrate natural resources. Each summer program offers a different natural science topic, from climate science and backpacking to water science, insects, and critters. Each camper can expect to learn about various ecosystems, habitats, insects, minerals, and wildlife. Weeklong camps will be held from June 10 to Aug. 23. Camps are offered for participants in kindergarten, first through second grades, third through fourth grades, fifth through sixth grades, and seventh through ninth grades. SUMMER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2024 8

Offering activities that range from bowling and martial arts to tag and four square, Cunningham’s Martial Arts and Bozeman Sports Camp will undoubtedly teach your child something new this summer. The programs at these locales show children how to be both competitive and compassionate as they learn respect and the value of camaraderie.

Here, your children can expend their boundless energy while participating in team sports, which will provide them with a sense of togetherness that is hard to find elsewhere. Children will build a solid work ethic while chatting with friends and laughing with counselors – all while strengthening their bodies, minds, and hearts.

Sports camps also provide children with structure and guidance. Building a connection

with a coach or counselor can make a positive impact on a child’s life, and mentors can shape young minds in incredibly positive ways. Participating in sports increases children’s motor skills, introduces them to new friends, and helps them build self-confidence. Studies show that physically active children are more likely to develop into physically active adults – adults with better coordination and balance, as well as enhanced social and leadership skills.

CUNNINGHAM’S MARTIAL

ARTS values teaching kids strong life skills while showing them that physical fitness can be fun. The goal is to build children’s confidence by focusing on discipline, respect, self-control, and perseverance. Cunningham’s mission statement is “built upon improving the lives of families in our community through giving

back, teaching strong life lessons, and preparing people so they never become a victim.” Instructors use positive reinforcement to help support kids’ mental and physical development. There is something for every age group here with three programs offered. The Dragons program is for children ages six to eight. This class helps kids learn focus, courtesy, and respect, while concentrating on coordination. The Juniors/Teens group is for kids ages eight to 14. This class teaches the importance of setting and achieving goals in addition to developing confidence and skill. The Adults group is for teens and adults ages 15 and older. This class offers a complete body workout to enhance physical fitness through real-world training. For more information on Cunningham’s Martial Arts and the classes offered, visit www.cunninghamsma.com or call (406) 556-8792.

BOZEMAN SPORTS CAMP

offers a variety of sports and activities for your camper. Kids can learn traditional sports such as soccer, basketball, baseball, football, and volleyball. They will also get to participate in and learn skills from tennis, flying disc, bowling, and other games. Kids will build their physical fitness through chasing, fleeing, and dodging, and learning agility, flexibility, and balance. The program is geared toward kids in kindergarten through sixth grade. There are three sessions this summer in June, July, and August, either half-day or full-day. The camp’s goal is to expose kids to many sports and activities so that they may continue to enjoy them as they grow up in Bozeman.
