Art of assemblage

At 6 years old, even Becky Roberts’ son is able to recognize that the art his mom creates is outside the norm. “This is odd, right?” Roberts remembers him asking while contemplating her latest piece, glad that the point was not lost on him.

Roberts is an assemblage artist, but if she tells people that, most don’t know what it means.

“I don’t know how to draw. I don’t paint,” Roberts said during an interview at her Bozeman home last month. “I make sculptures out of found objects... I take old stuff, and I glue it to other old stuff.”

While she downplays her process, Roberts’ art is wonderfully creative. It is full of life and humor. She leans into things that others may dismiss as “kitsch” or “tacky,” pointing out a Groucho Marx statuette atop a mid-century record case in the dining room as proof of concept. For some, the ideas may be a “bad” design, or in poor taste, yet Roberts sees something appealing. One of her more

popular larger pieces, “Sausage Party,” is set on a vintage play kitchen. Figurines of suit-clad men wait in the bowl of a meat grinder attached to the work surface. And from the business end of the meat grinder, colorful streamers emerge.

Assemblage is an art form that seems to be as much about collecting as it is creating. Roberts has always had a love for vintage, leaning into a bygone era with her own personal style. While she said she has downplayed it in the last

10 years, the pin-up inspiration is still apparent in her mass of curled dark hair and red lipstick.

“Sausage Party,” like many of Roberts’ pieces, is based around an old toy — that play kitchen.

“I love a good vintage toy, “ Roberts said. “Something that looks old and played with and loved.”

“Black Twitter: A People’s History” (May 9)

Based on Jason Parham’s WIRED article “A People’s History of Black Twitter,” this threepart docuseries charts the rise, the movements, the voices and the memes that made Black Twitter an influential and dominant force in nearly every aspect of American political and cultural life.

“Grey’s Anatomy” - Season 20, New Episode (May 10)

Celebrating its 20th season, this beloved medical procedural proves that life moves fast — and the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial need to move faster, if they want to keep up with it. Following collapsed floors and complicated wellness programs, the hospital’s newest “white coats” have been fighting their way through their residencies, all eager to impress their superiors, like Drs. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) and Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington).

“Hip-Hop and The White House” (Available Now)

Narrated by Atlanta rap giant Jeezy, this documentary looks at the intersection of hip-hop and one of the most powerful positions in the world: the President of the United States. Directed, written and executive produced by journalist and filmmaker Jesse Washington, the film features appearances by artists Bun B, Chika, Common and more, as it delves into a 50-year history of a world-changing culture, illustrating hip-hop’s journey from outsider status to the pinnacle of power.

Jennifer Connelly dipped into the world of fantasy early in her career, so it’s not entirely surprising to see her return to it now.

The Oscar-winning actress has gone back to stories of the supernatural and science fiction with reasonable regularity, and her latest is “Dark Matter,” an Apple TV+ series that begins streaming with the first two of its eight episodes Wednesday, May 8. In the adaptation of the book by Blake Crouch (“Wayward Pines”), Connelly plays the wife of a physicist (Joel Edgerton, “The Gift,” 2015) who is taken from his real life into an alternate reality, from which he struggles to get back to the world he knows and to save his family. Alice Braga (“I Am Legend,” 2007), Jimmi Simpson (“Pachinko”) and Oakes Fegley (“Pete’s Dragon,” 2016) also are featured in the drama.

The Jim Henson-directed 1986 fantasy film “Labyrinth” gave Connelly one of her first major roles (opposite David Bowie, “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” 1976) and has attained cult status over the years. Whether for that reason or others, she has returned to otherworldly tales in such projects as “The Rocketeer” (1991), “Dark City” (1998), “Hulk” (2003), “Dark Water” (2005), “The Day the Earth Stood Still” (2008), “Inkheart” (2008), “Winter’s Tale” (2014) and “Alita: Battle Angel” (2019).

At the same time, Connelly projects a down-to-earth relatability that has brought her other prime acting opportunities, as with her Academy Award-honored performance as mathematician John Nash’s (Russell Crowe, “Gladiator,” 2000) wife, Alicia, in director Ron Howard’s “A Beautiful Mind” (2001). That picture also brought her a husband, since she married co-star Paul Bettany (“WandaVision”) later. “House of Sand and Fog” (2003), casting Connelly as a woman trying to regain her

Alice Chambers (Florence Pugh) lives the perfect life as an idyllic, 1950’s housewife. That is, until she begins to notice the other wives in the neighborhood developing strange behaviors, causing her to question her husband, Jack (Harry Styles), and how real their lives truly are. Directed by Olivia Wilde, this 2022 thriller also stars Chris Pine, Gemma Chan, Nick Kroll, Kiki Layne and Sydney Chandler.

former residence from its new tenants, is another of her particularly notable credits.

Connelly still can sense a hit coming, as proven amply by her part as Penny, the bar proprietor and ex-flame of Tom Cruise’s title character in the 2022 mega-success “Top Gun: Maverick.” Being involved in such a blockbuster certainly can give an extra charge to an established career, so Connelly is all but certain to have more media matters — “Dark” or not — on her professional menu for years to come.

Lawrence and Pratt are intergalactic “Passengers”

Movies that are set aboard big spaceships for long journeys, such as “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “Silent Running,” can make you wonder how the folks onboard spend their time. Yes, it’s a lot of space, but it is still confined space.

“Passengers” — which Starz airs Thursday, May 9, and Friday, May 10 — addresses that issue, with Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt as the major characters awakened from a deep slumber after an asteroid hits their vessel that’s destined for a colonized planet.

Actually, Pratt is the one who’s actually revived by the collision. His character is an engineer alone in being conscious, and he decides he needs company, so he wakes up the journalist played by Lawrence. More than 5,000 other passengers remain dozing, so these two pretty much have the run of the intergalactic place, for better and for worse. Their trek is supposed to span 120 years, and since they can’t go back to their previous state of sleep, they probably won’t live to tell others about it. They bond — closely — over their shared situation, with an android played by Michael Sheen on hand for some comic relief. However, he also knows some things that make for a tense race to the finish line.

Even more emotionally than visually, though the visuals are stunning at times, “Passengers” succeeds in merging the basics of sci-fi with the roots of a romance. And Lawrence and Pratt work well together, which is a good thing, since this movie would be doomed instantly were that not the case.

While there also are a few other actors on hand (Laurence Fishburne and Andy Garcia also turn up), Pratt and Lawrence certainly are the focus of the two hours. They have a tightly interlocked arc to go through, demanding lightness as well as tougher stuff, and they make that trip together quite successfully.

OF HUNTERS ON PRIME VIDEO

Q: Is Al Pacino scheduled to do any more work for television?

A: Not as of the time this column was written, but the Academy Award and Primetime Emmy winner certainly has made his mark in projects for the home screen. Seen on the most recent Oscar telecast presenting the honor for best picture at the end of the ceremony, Pacino had his earliest known role on film in a 1968 episode of the ABC police drama “N.Y.P.D.,” a series on which many New York-based performers found work in the course of establishing their careers.

It was a long time after that until Pacino did TV projects again, since his 1972 success in “The Godfather” set him on a course of work that kept him in feature films and theater. It was the HBO version of an iconic play that brought Pacino back to the home screen, as he played attorney Roy Cohn in the Mike Nichols-directed 2003 film of “Angels in America.” His Emmy win for that performance was part of a huge victory for the piece at those awards, which also honored the acting of Meryl Streep, Jeffrey Wright and Mary-Louise Parker in it.

Next, Pacino returned to HBO as controversial pathologist Jack Kevorkian in director Barry Levinson’s 2010 film “You Don’t Know Jack,” earning his second Emmy for his acting. He was back on HBO in 2013 in the title role of “Phil Spector,” writer-director David Mamet’s 2013 profile of the polarizing music-industry figure, for which Pacino picked up his third Emmy.

In 2018, Pacino visited HBO again by reuniting with director Levinson for “Paterno,” about former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and a scandal that ultimately cost him his career at the school. Most recently in TV-oriented terms, Pacino starred in the 2020-23 Prime Video series “Hunters,” playing a disguised-through-surgery Nazi who led a group of Nazi hunters decades after World War II.

Cary Grant travels “North by Northwest”

Alfred Hitchcock was famous for generating chills in many of the films he directed, but for thorough entertainment value, “North by Northwest” is among his top achievements. The humor-infused 1959 adventure is a frequent attraction on Turner Classic Movies, which shows it again to launch its series “The Art of Artifice” on Tuesday, May 7. One of the picture’s prime artifices is its recreation of Mount Rushmore, which figures prominently into the climax that takes central character Roger Thornhill (played wonderfully by Cary Grant) to literal heights of danger.

He’s a New York advertising man mistaken for a spy by a cultured villain (James Mason), whose efforts to eliminate the human target also are marked by a hugely memorable encounter with a crop-dusting plane in a remote area. Eva Marie Saint has a pivotal role as a mystery woman who may or may not be on Thornhill’s side, and Martin Landau also is notable among the bad guys. Hitchcock’s traditional cameo comes very early in the film.

Scuderia Ferrari, Sainz hopeful upgrades provide better outcome at Miami Grand Prix

The 2024 Formula One season continues with another action-packed weekend as drivers head back to Miami for the third Miami Grand Prix at the Miami International Autodrome in Miami, Florida, with practices and qualifiers airing Saturday, May 4, and race day airing live Sunday, May 5 on ESPN.

Charging behind the 2023 Formula One defending champions Red Bull, Carlos Sainz and Ferrari have remained firmly in the mix after five rounds of the 2024 campaign, with the 29-year-old Spaniard picking up his first victory of the season at the Australian Grand Prix after an untimely brake failure forced Red Bull’s Max Verstappen into early retirement, paving a clear path to victory for Sainz. Nevertheless, going into the 2024 Miami Grand Prix, Sainz and Ferrari will be looking for a much better race pace compared to last season, with Sainz beginning the race in third and eventually losing pace leading to an overtake from Fernando Alonso and George Russell.

With Red Bull and its RB20 car the clear-cut favorites once again this season, the Spaniard has high expectations for Ferrari to close the gap with additional upgrades as the year progresses.

“I think they [Red Bull] are definitely going to have an advantage in the first third of the season until we bring one or two upgrades that make us fight them more consistently,” Sainz said in an interview on the FormulaNerds Podcast. “But by that time, maybe it’s too late with the advantage that they might have on the championship.

“In the meantime, we need more Australias, but I don’t see Red Bull, as a team, making these mistakes very often, no,” Sainz said.

She is looking for items that are a little offbeat, a little funky. All the better if they have an interesting patina from use or are a bit dirty. These, she said, feel like pieces that someone has loved well and that have been forgotten. And through her art she can make them new again.

“It’s got, like, a new lease on life because I can take it and make it into something different,” she said.

In her home studio space, drawers and antique locking suitcases help organize the bits and bobs that may come together in a piece of art. There are collections of matchbooks, magazines, postcards, doll heads and more matchbooks.

“They kept just coming to me,” Roberts said of the matchbooks. “And I thought they were, like, kind of like a mini canvas.”

She loves the idea of a piece of art that can fit in the palm of your hand. And there is sentiment there too. After working as a florist for more than a decade, Roberts and her family made their way to Bozeman. While her husband took up guiding, Roberts stayed home to take care of her son. While being a stay-at-home mom was rewarding in some ways, it seemed to be hindering

Now, friends, fellow art lovers and social media followers contribute to the base collection — a stash of tins here, bits and bobs from their junk drawers or craft supply horde there.

Lately, Roberts has been diving into somewhat larger pieces, moving from matchbook creations to those based on larger objects or toys. A dollhouse in her workspace provides a play space. Vignettes in each room may be culled to create a piece. And someday, it may become its own piece.

Barbie may have her dreamhouse, but Roberts calls her house “Becky’s Nightmare House.” Like many artists, she uses its scenes, and her assemblage art in general, to explore an internal world. While her husband can sometimes pinpoint the situations or emotions behind each piece, most are left to the interpretation of the viewer. Perception is personal.
