Lily Gladstone: Paving the way

More than 350 empty white chairs filled the recently built arbor at the center of the campgrounds in Browning earlier this spring, the headquarters of the Blackfeet Nation. Later that day, those seats, along with bleachers that surrounded the perimeter of the building, were filled with families, friends, children and tribal leaders from the Blackfoot Confederacy, all in attendance to celebrate Lily Gladstone.

The ceremony was meant to welcome home Gladstone, who was born and raised on the reservation before moving to Seattle, and honor her with a stand-up headdress, a tradition that recognizes a member of the community who has demonstrated leadership, respect and responsibility.

“It’s people like Lily who are paving

in Martin Scorsese’s film, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which was based on the nonfiction book written by David Grann about murders of the Osage people during the 1920s.

Her performance garnered Gladstone “Best Actress” in the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards, as well as an Oscar nomination. When Gladstone won her Golden Globe award, a first for a Native actor, she delivered part of her acceptance speech in Blackfeet.

The ceremony this week included presentations from tribal leaders and Gladstone, a round dance, a feed, and the opportunity for community members to personally meet and congratulate Gladstone.

For many, it was a chance to embrace what is possible.

during the celebration. Gladstone, Blackfeet and Nez Perce, an actress who studied at the University of Montana, last year starred

“It’s true, if you work hard you can do it,” Gladstone told the crowd that included scores of area children. “I feel so lucky and blessed that I’m Blackfeet, that I get to be here. I was brought up and I continue to be brought up by all of you. I try to do my best to bring everyone up with me because that’s what we do, it makes us who we are.”

Checking in with LIONEL RICHIE

“Dinosaur” (Available Now)

Directed by Eric Leighton (“Pocahontas,” 1995) and Ralph Zondag (“Te Nightmare Before Christmas,” 1993), this family-friendly flm melds live-action and animation, following as a lone Iguanodon egg is adopted by a family of prehistoric lemurs, the baby dinosaur soon named Aladar (voiced by D.B. Sweeney, “Te Cutting Edge,” 1992). Later in his life, Aladar must embark on an arduous trek in search of safety after a meteor shower destroys his family’s once-peaceful island, leaving him in need of a suitable home.

With “American Idol” now in its home stretch for this TV year, there’s plenty of it to be seen — and, therefore, a lot of Lionel Richie as well.

The veteran singer-songwriter remains on the panel of judges as the ABC talent contest now airs both Sundays and Mondays on the way to the finale of its current season, slated for May 19. It’s the seventh season for the competition in its ABC era, but the 22nd overall, including the 15 seasons it spent on Fox in its original run. Ryan Seacrest has remained as host, and for the ABC version, Richie and fellow music superstars Katy Perry and Luke Bryan have formed the judging panel, though Perry intends to leave after the current season.

Richie’s career dates back to the late 1960s, when he became a member of The Commodores, whose hits included “Machine Gun” and “Brick House.” However, Richie’s soft style found a home on such other Commodores tunes as “Easy,” “Three Times a Lady” and “Sail On,” all of which he also wrote. He wrote “Lady” as well, and after the other Commodores opted not to record it, it went to Kenny Rogers — who had his top-selling hit as a solo artist with it.

In 1982, Richie went solo himself, and he’s never looked back in doing recording-studio work as well as a number of major performance tours, including those he has shared with Mariah Carey in 2017 and Earth, Wind & Fire in 2023. He also has been celebrated with a number of the top honors in entertainment, including four Grammys, an Oscar and the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

Though Richie didn’t necessarily need another major chapter in his career, “American Idol” has furnished just that as he helps other singers to find their own voices, quite literally.

“Ocean’s Eleven” rolls the dice successfully

When it comes to movies that are just plain cool, “Ocean’s Eleven” ranks high.

Director Steven Soderbergh’s 2001 remake of the slyly comedic crime caper — currently streaming on Hulu — had a lot to meet on that count, since the 1960 original starring the Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin-led “Rat Pack” remains famous for the charisma of its stars and the glamor of its premise: the simultaneous robbery of several Las Vegas casinos. In the update, the plan is shifted to the night of a big boxing match instead of New Year’s Eve, but the story still works fine.

Ryan O’Neal

Top-billed star George Clooney had teamed with Soderbergh before, in the critically acclaimed “Out of Sight,” but they hit it out of the park in box-office terms with “Ocean’s” (which has been so enduring, it’s rare to find a month when it isn’t playing on some cable channel). The actor plays the newly paroled Danny Ocean, who calmly wastes no time regathering his old gang to set his latest scheme in motion.

And what a gang it is. The stellar group is especially notable for Clooney’s easy rapport with Brad Pitt as his “first lieutenant.” Add such others as Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Bernie Mac, Scott Caan, Casey Affleck and veteran talents Carl Reiner and Elliott Gould, and this is a truly impressive cast. Plus, as virtually the lone female among them, there’s a certain superstar the credits jokingly acknowledge with “Introducing Julia Roberts”; after making her Oscar-winning “Erin Brockovich” with Soderbergh the previous year, she’s cast as Ocean’s estranged wife, now involved with the humorless casino magnate (Andy Garcia) the fellows are targeting.

Whereas the first “Ocean’s Eleven” involved basics like dynamite in accessing the casinos’ safes to execute the heist, 40 years later, things were quite high-tech. Thus, evading scanning lasers and timing the activation of machinery becomes necessary — and fairly complicated — for the thieves, and much of the fun is in watching them apply their brainpower to outwitting modern security measures.

OF PEYTON PLACE ON ABC

Q: During the recent tribute night to Ryan O’Neal on Turner Classic Movies, several mentions of “Peyton Place” were made. Can you tell me what that was?

A: It was a television series that brought initial fame to O’Neal before his 1970 movie performance as Oliver Barrett IV in “Love Story” took his popularity to an even higher level. Based on a best-selling novel by Grace Metalious about a scandal-ridden town, “Peyton Place” had been made into a 1957 movie first, then it was turned into a prime-time serial that ABC aired several times weekly for a while. It started in 1964 with two new episodes per week, then went to three episodes in 1965 and then back to two, until it ultimately was reduced to one episode weekly toward the end of its run in 1969.

O’Neal was cast as Rodney Harrington, whose romance with Allison MacKenzie (Mia Farrow) helped make O’Neal a darling of fan magazines. Rodney already had a girlfriend in Betty Anderson (Barbara Parkins), generating a love triangle that certainly captured public interest. Farrow left the show after a couple of seasons to pursue a film career that notably included the 1968 thriller “Rosemary’s Baby.”

For O’Neal, “Peyton Place” was a longer job, and he stayed just about until the end of its run. He had made the movie “The Big Bounce” (1968) with fellow “Peyton Place” co-star — and, for several years, wife — Leigh Taylor-Young while he was still on the show, but his subsequent film “The Games” (1970) had even bigger significance to his career. It was written by Erich Segal, also the writer of “Love Story”; he suggested O’Neal for the latter picture, which couldn’t have hurt in terms of the actor landing the Oliver role.

This just in @ Bozeman Library

Bozeman Public Library is pleased to feature local creative organizations in a new program: Meet the Makers. These ‘makers’ are involved locally in the Arts, or music, or theater, or some form of expression for adults. Kicking off the premiere program on Saturday May 4 is The Bozeman Actors’ Theatre, and the Gamelan Sekar Gunung. The Bozeman Actors’ Theatre — Founded in 2008 as Actors Theatre of Montana, or BAT, produced several challenging and rewarding plays and readings in its early years in locations ranging from intimate theaters to historic large houses. BAT is actively producing plays

for 2024 such as Murder in the Cathedral by T.S. Eliot and Born with Teeth by Liz Duffy Adams.

Gamelan Sekar Gunung (Mountain Flower Gamelan) is a percussion orchestra made up of many unique instruments, including metalophones (xylophone-like), gongs, suling flutes, drums, cymbals, and angklung (bamboo shakers). These instruments are native to Bali, Indonesia, and in fact, this orchestra was built especially

for Montana State by the master gamelan builder on the island, Pandé Madé Gableran. The orchestra is of the type called Gamelan Angklung, used originally in temple music. Join us in the Community room on Saturday, May 4 at 1 PM to experience a brief performance, and Meet the Makers. For more information, please call 406582-2410 or visit bozemanlibrary.org.

A Year in Practice: Seasonal Rituals and Prompts to Awaken Cycles of Creative Expression by Jacqueline Suskin. Speaking of creatives such as those featured in Meet the Makers, this book is written in sync with the progression of the seasons. A program of techniques and journaling prompts guide the creative seeker all year long. Truly insightful for anyone perplexed by the constant change and length of Bozeman seasons.

The Darkest White: a Mountain Legend and the Avalanche that Took Him by Eric Blehm. The bestselling author of The Last Season and Fearless, comes the story of the legendary snowboarder Craig Kelly and his death in the 2003 Durrand

Glacier Avalanche — a devastating and controversial tragedy that claimed the lives of seven people. Craig Kelley’s short life was a fascinating launch to championship snowboarding. The Shootist by Glendon Swarthout. People say this is one of the best novels ever written in the Western genre. It was also the basis for one of John Wayne’s last roles in the movie of the same name. I like it because the main character’s name is John Bernard Books. Mr. Books is a famous former sheriff turned gun for higher battling cancer. What follows is a powerful, emotional story about life and death at the turn of the 20th century.

Connery and Cage infiltrate “The Rock”

If Sean Connery could make such a great secret agent, why couldn’t he make an equally fine criminal on the screen? He could, as he proved in “The Rock,” the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced, Michael Bay-directed 1996 action fest that FX is showing Sunday, April 28. Connery plays a famously elusive criminal who’s sprung from prison temporarily to help a bookish FBI agent (Nicolas Cage) thwart a renegade general (Ed Harris) threatening San Francisco with nerve-gas-laden rockets, using Alcatraz as a base of operation.

The different styles of Connery and Cage make them a terrific team here, and the casting is first-rate down the line, with John Spencer, David Morse, William Forsythe and John C. McGinley also in pivotal roles. There’s plenty for the stunt performers to do, too, with a wild car chase through the City by the Bay being a prime example. This is much in keeping with the sort of brawny entertainment that has been a trademark of Bruckheimer’s career, with Cage as his leading actor multiple times.

Jays, Bichette looking for better results in May after mediocre start

We’re only one month into the 2024 Major League Baseball season and all 30 teams have hit the ground running, including the Toronto Blue Jays. They prepare to visit the Washington Nationals for the first game in a threegame series Friday, May 3, at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., with all the action airing live on AppleTV.

After what many believe was an underperforming season for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023, and having gone winless in six post-season games since 2020, this season brings a new sense of excitement and optimism as Jays shortstop Bo Bichette looks to step up in big ways.

“That’s the culture — to show up every day and be ready to do whatever we can to win a game. And that culture is built over a period of time of people holding each other accountable to that standard and that culture,” Bichette told the Toronto Sun. “That’s what we’re working on now.”

Last season, Bichette boasted an impressive .306 batting average, .399 slugging percentage, 20 home runs and 73 RBIs, with an improved defensive game going from -16 runs saved in 2022 to five runs saved in 2023. And by the time the all-star game rolled around, Bichette led the MLB in hits, while leading the American League in total bases, multi-hit home games and batting average — an all-star caliber season, to say the least.

While Bichette wasn’t available for the Blue Jays the last time they faced the Nationals, the Blue Jays dominated the Nats in their last matchup, with Vladamir Guerrero Jr. putting up two home runs and leading to the Jays walking away with a commanding 7-0 victory.

Meanwhile, for the Nationals, rebuilding again appears to be the theme since the Nats won the World Series in 2019, with the team officially parting ways at last year’s trade deadline with star outfielder Juan Soto and first baseman Josh Bell. Adding to the rebuild, former World Series MVP and MLB veteran pitcher Stephen Strasburg, who recently announced his retirement while spending most of his time since the 2019 playoffs idled by injuries.

Don’t miss any of the action as Bo Bichette and the Toronto Blue Jays visit the Washington Nationals on Friday, May 3, at Nationals Park in Washington D.C., with the game broadcast live on AppleTV.

“It’s really a special thing to be who we are, to be where we’re from, and I know sometimes it could be a really hard thing, too, but all good things are hard things and are shared and we take care of each other. I would not be here, I wouldn’t have been able to do anything good with my life if I didn’t come from good people.”

Gladstone’s ceremony brought together the four bands that make up the Blackfoot Confederacy: the Siksika, Kainai and Northern Peigan-Piikani, who all come from Canada, and the Southern Amskapi Piikuni from Montana. Several tribal leaders praised Gladstone and noted what her accomplishments had meant to their communities.

“It showcases Blackfeet to the world,” Blackfeet Business Tribal Council member Everett Armstrong told Montana Free Press. “The significance of being on a world stage, our language being on a world stage. The presence of a Blackfeet person on a world stage. It just means everything to me.”

The Browning community’s youth also shared their support for Gladstone’s homecoming. The Stamiksiitsiikin Bullshoe Elementary’s kindergarten and first-grade students and De La Salle Blackfeet School students each gave a prayer in the Blackfeet language.

“It’s just a big inspiration, especially to our youth here in Browning,” said Mariah Posey with the Pikuni Youth Council. Gladstone’s accomplishments “showcase that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.”

Carol Tatsey-Murray, who in May, along with Gladstone, will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Montana, said that the celebration was impactful not just for the younger generation but for the tribal elders as well.
