“The Last Rider” (Nov. 20)

With “The Crown” now in its home stretch, Sir Jonathan Pryce is continuing his portrayal of one of his homeland’s most famous royals. The esteemed actor is back as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in the currently streaming first portion of the acclaimed, Peter Morgan-created Netflix drama series’ sixth and final season. Following those four episodes, the remaining six will become available on Dec. 14. The episodes place much emphasis on the marriage of then-Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles (played by Dominic West and Olivia Williams) after the death of Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), and on the early stages of the relationship between Prince William and Kate Middleton (Ed McVey, Meg Bellamy) … but Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) and husband Philip still loom large over the developments, as they did in real life. Played earlier in “The Crown” by Matt Smith and Tobias Menzies, Prince Philip is just one of many prominent figures Pryce has portrayed on screen and stage over the course of his career, something he began doing fairly early on with an award-winning portrayal of the title role in “Hamlet” in London in 1980. Other Shakespeare works he has tackled have included “King Lear” (again in the title part), “The Taming of the Shrew” and “Antony and Cleopatra,” though he also has been Professor Henry Higgins in “My Fair Lady” and Fagin in “Oliver!” Pryce’s knack for standout roles has extended to his plentiful movie work, even if it’s only via his voice, as it was last year as Jacob Marley in Netflix’s computer-animated “Scrooge: A Christmas Carol.” Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist (“Woman in Gold,” 2015), composer Gustav Mahler (”Bride of the Wind,” 2001) and former Argentine president Juan Peron (“Evita,” 1996) have been among Pryce’s other screen characterizations. However, James Bond fans may know him best as media mogul Elliot Carver, whose scheme to instigate World War III drew the attention of Agent 007 (Pierce Brosnan) in “Tomorrow Never Dies” (1997).

“National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (Nov. 23) As the holidays approach, Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) wants to have a perfect family Christmas, so he pesters his wife, Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo), and children, as he tries to make sure everything is in line, including the tree and decorations. However, things go awry quickly. His hick cousin, Eddie (Randy Quaid), and his family show up unplanned and start living in their camper on the Griswold property. Even worse, Clark’s employers renege on the holiday bonus he needs.

Prince Philip died in 2021 and Queen Elizabeth II passed last year, and the timeline of “The Crown” ends well before those milestones. However, Pryce’s performance in the globally recognized series is one reason that will ensure his royal counterpart remains in many hearts and minds as time goes on. ‘Goldfinger’ remains one of James Bond’s best

Over the course of six decades, James Bond has had a lot Sean Connery in “Goldfinger” of screen adventures, but one of the earliest remains one of the best. Included by MGM+ in a Thanksgiving Day marathon of several of the pictures in the franchise Thursday, Nov. 24, “Goldfinger” is the movie that cemented the series’ formula for many viewers and critics. While telling a solid spy story (taken from Ian Fleming’s novel), it added comfortable amounts of gadgetry and so-called “Bond girls” that were essential parts of the concept from then on. Sean Connery is completely in his stride as Agent 007 in the 1964 caper, as the character helps get the goods on wealthy villain Auric Goldfinger (Gert Frobe) when the latter cheats in a Miami card game. The aftermath, which famously doesn’t bode well for Goldfinger’s assistant (Shirley Eaton), makes Bond even more eager to see justice done ... and the agent uses a golf match back in England to engage the enemy, who introduces his silent and deadly henchman Oddjob (Harold Sakata). As the title foe’s plan to contaminate the gold stored in Fort Knox takes shape, “Goldfinger” becomes an even wilder ride. A great car chase and a close encounter with a laser beam set the stage for a captive Bond to be brought to Kentucky, where he is placed in the custody of Goldfinger’s no-nonsense personal pilot (Honor Blackman), whose “Flying Circus” of fellow female flyers plays a big part in the Fort Knox raid. Director Guy Hamilton, who would go on to guide several more 007 films, blends all of the elements smoothly — and not only is it a sterling representation of the entire series, but even if it was the only Bond movie someone saw, it would stand as a thoroughly satisfying piece of entertainment on its own. It also would confirm what made the suave and confident Connery such a major international star of the 1960s and beyond.

Elvis Presley OF LOVE ME TENDER ON 20TH CENTURY STUDIOS

Q: I’ve seen a lot of Elvis Presley movies on television lately. Which were the first and last ones he made?

A: The first was “Love Me Tender” (1956), which actually was renamed from the original “The Reno Brothers” to coordinate with the title song, a giant hit for Presley that he performed in the film. He played one of the Reno siblings during the Civil War, youngest brother Clint, who tended to the homefront while his brothers fought in the battle. Top-billed Richard Egan portrayed the oldest brother, while the role of another Reno was filled by James Drury, later to become “The Virginian” on weekly TV. Presley’s final film as an actor was “Change of Habit” (1969), casting him as an inner-city doctor who became enamored of a colleague — unaware that she was a nun working incognito. The picture’s leading lady was Mary Tyler Moore, in the last movie she made under a contract with Universal Pictures. Interestingly, another co-star (as a cop) was Edward Asner, a year before he and Moore began their legendary TV work together on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”; he also had worked earlier with Presley in “Kid Galahad” (1962). If it’s Presley’s last movie overall that you’re looking for, though, that would be the concert attraction “Elvis on Tour” (1972) — which earned its year’s Golden Globe Award for best documentary film. Hampton Roads and Richmond in Virginia were among the stops featured, as were Jacksonville, Fla., and San Antonio, Texas. After that, what turned out to be the superstar’s career-concluding performances were in a couple of TV specials, “Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii” (1973) and “Elvis in Concert” (1977).

Warren Beatty brings a suspenseful ‘View’ into focus

BY JAY BOBBIN

Warren Beatty in “The Parallax View”

Suspense and politics merge in “The Parallax View,” director Alan J. Pakula’s 1974 thriller that Guest Programmer (and “Property Brother”) Jonathan Scott makes one of his selections when he schedules Turner Classic Movies for the night on Wednesday, Nov. 22. Warren Beatty stars as a reporter who gets clued into the alleged murders of several witnesses to a presidential hopeful’s assassination atop Seattle’s famed Space Needle, and though he dismisses that claim at first, the journalist eventually becomes intrigued enough to investigate. The film moves quickly enough to rival the best spy stories while also integrating the paranoia that was so pervasive during the Watergate era … a subject Pakula would tackle even more directly in his subsequent picture, “All the President’s Men.” A first-rate supporting cast also helps here, with Hume Cronyn, Paula Prentiss, William Daniels and Kenneth Mars included.

playerprofile BY ROBERTO JOZEF Lando Norris continues his search for first F1 victory Formula One has officially arrived in the desert, as teams and drivers prepare for the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix. The race kicks off Sunday, Nov. 19, in Las Vegas at the newly built Las Vegas Street Circuit, with prerace coverage and race-day coverage airing live on ESPN. As the F1 season winds towards its conclusion, rising star Lando Norris has been proving all season long he has what it takes to compete against the best of the best. At just 23 years old, Norris has become a household name, finishing second place five times this season as he continues searching for his first F1 victory. However, with Red Bull as dominant as it has been, the top of the podium has remained elusive throughout his 2023 campaign. While second place is not quite what team McLaren and Norris have hoped for, two major car upgrades this season have allowed Norris to come within 19 seconds of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen during two different races — a major feat considering the massive point gap the Red Bull star has established. With Norris officially under contract until 2025, the British native has plenty of time to build more momentum in his career. However, when asked by Sky Sports 1 reporters if he could win a race this season, Norris held realistic expectations of himself and his team. “Unlikely. Not the answer I want to tell myself or anyone, but it’s unlikely. … Vegas is still a big question mark, but there are no high-speed circuits, which is where we are very strong. It’s where we have always been strong and we are almost on par with Red Bull in the high-speed corners. It’s just the slow speed is letting us down at the minute,” Norris said. “We understand it and know it’s our area to focus on and improve on. When it comes together, probably not this year but next year, I think we can do some good things.” Fullname: Lando Norris Birthdate: Nov. 13, 1999 (23) Birthplace: Bristol, England, United Kingdom Height/weight: 5-7/150 pounds Team: McLaren-Mercedes Honors and achievements: FIA F3 European Championship winner (2017), Autosport British Driver of the Year (2016, 2019, 2020, 2021), McLaren Autosport BRDC Award (2016), Autosport National Driver of the Year (2017)

Campione/from 2 The former general store space where Campione resides on the corner of Main and Callender in downtown Livingston should be an ideal spot for any business, but the previous tenants struggled to make ends meet. So on top of wanting to bring tasty food to Livingston, Jeffrey said, the Campione team wanted a “stable, solid place for the community to gather.” When the idea of a new restaurant was just formulating in their minds, Campione’s founders were immediately sold on the location. Without a menu, budget, or business plan, they knew their concept of a community gathering place with great local food could thrive there. Then, with a target of opening within six months, the world threw them a curveball. In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic delivered devastation to many existing restaurants, just as Campione was looking to open its doors in late spring. With the lease signed, there was no question the team had to press forward. Campione was able to open in August 2020, a bit later than planned. Since then, the menu has featured many consistent options that Galli promises will always have a cherished spot at the table. At the same time, the restaurant’s reliance on local ingredients also calls

manicotti. I really do try to be adventurous and branch out in my menu choices, but sometimes a dish keeps calling me back. A traditional version might marry tubular pasta with creamy ricotta cheese, herbs, and a bright tomato sauce. Nothing wrong with that. The Campione version takes a delectable detour, using homemade pasta sheets wrapped around ricotta cheese and caramelized onions, and topped with braised Montana oxtail. The tomato sauce is replaced with a savory “brodo” that really puts the meal into a league of its own. It’s the kind of dish that helped draw the attention of the New York Times. Asked about the recognition, Galli says the team has gone through a “wave of different emotions,” but that the recognition won’t change anything about their focus on providing a great local spot to eat top-notch food. If you already know about Campione, you probably understand that table reservations are encouraged, but not required. Campione also has seven seats at the bar that are first come, first served. An undoubtedly tasty experience I have yet to partake of is their Saturday and Sunday brunch, or a reserved spot for their Feast of the Seven Fishes holiday dinners in December. Take-out is also an option for those looking to grab a quality meal and go.
