When Sage Crawford-Kahrl became a bookseller with the Country Bookshelf in Bozeman, they had recently come out of a reading slump. Reading for fun, or reading any book by choice, had taken a back seat to school work.

Enter “The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle,” the debut mystery novel by English

author Stuart Turton, that the author describes as an Agatha Christie mystery within a “Groundhog Day” time loop. Admittedly judging the book by the cover, Sage picked up a copy from a bookstore before a flight. She finished it in two days.

As a bookseller, one frequent request is a recommendation of a book to help people out of their own reading slumps. They’re looking for a page-turner, or that “can’t put it

down” book. For Sage, “The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle” continues to be that book.

More than simply reintroducing the joy of reading, Sage’s love for the book and Turton’s writing are the main reasons the author will visit Bozeman this weekend, with a reading and conversation with Sage at the Country Bookshelf on May 19 about his latest book, “The Last Murder at the End of the World.” In England,

the book was released on March 28, reaching the top of the Sunday Times bestseller chart for hardcover fiction.

The U.S. release is slated for May 21.

“I was just recommending this book because I believed people would like it, because I loved it so much,” Sage said.

“I didn’t expect that things would snowball how they did. It proved to me the way that a little independent bookstore can

impact community.”

Based on Sage’s recommendations, Country Bookshelf sold 91 copies of “The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle” in December 2021. For context, and a peek behind the bookstore curtain, Sage explained that to keep a book on a shelf, the store must sell eight copies… in a year. The bookstore has now sold well over 1,000 copies.

“Sentinel” (May 24)

In 2155, through a multi-dimensional portal, an alien invasion annihilates nearly the entire human race. Some of the people who manage to survive are miners hidden on the dark side of the moon and, years after the invasion, with the use of new technology, three soldiers are sent back to Earth.Upon arrival, the three heroes soon find themselves face to face with the all-powerful guardian of the portal known as the Sentinel and its army.

Familiar and much-honored for her acting, Jane Lynch has established another identity by making it known that she’s game for games.

The alumna of television’s “Glee” won a Primetime Emmy for playing Sue Sylvester on that series, but she has collected two more (out of her total of five to date) by using her caustic humor to put contestants through their paces. The current example of her filling that role is NBC’s “Weakest Link,” which moves to Mondays on May 20.

Lynch starts each episode by putting eight players to the test, having them work together to answer questions and win money. As the contest progresses, players who contribute the least to the team’s success are voted out, with Lynch giving them this now-famous dismissal: “You are the Weakest Link. Goodbye.”

Lynch’s ability to field such duties could be traced back to her career roots as a member of Chicago’s renowned Second City troupe, as one of only two women selected for the company at that time. She went on to do more improvisation on stage as a member of Annoyance Theater, where her roles included matriarch Carol in “The Real Live Brady Bunch.”

By the time “Glee” premiered in 2009, Lynch had racked up considerable movie credits, ranging from “The Fugitive” (1993) to such Christopher Guest-directed satires as “Best in Show” (2000) and “A Mighty Wind” (2003). They typically showed off her quick wit and skill at repartee, and that, along with her “Glee” persona, made her NBC’s choice to host “Hollywood Game Night” in 2013. Involving celebrity guests in party games, that gig lasted until 2020 and earned Lynch dual Primetime Emmys — and dovetailed with the start of her “Weakest Link” work.

“The Darjeeling Limited” (Available Now)

Tom Hanks navigates the ‘Road to Perdition’

From a mermaid-loving man to Mister Rogers, Tom Hanks certainly has tackled a wide variety of roles in his career.

One of the most different is the Depression-era hit man he plays in the 2002 drama “Road to Perdition,” which MGM+ shows Wednesday, May 22. It’s a necessarily mannered and lowkey part for the typically gregarious Hanks, and if it’s difficult to accept him in it, that’s a sign of just how successful he is in it.

The character is a family man as well as a killer, and when his eldest son (Tyler Hoechlin, who’s grown up to be television’s latest Superman) discovers a bit too much about Dad’s business, the seemingly fatherly mobster in charge (Paul Newman, typically masterful in one of his last roles) wants the youngster eliminated.

Instead, the victims become Hanks’ wife (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and younger son, sending Hanks and his other child on the run ... but with eventual revenge on the father’s mind.

“Road to Perdition” clearly is emotionally complex, quite wonderfully, and it has an ideal director in Sam Mendes — who was coming off his Oscar-winning “American Beauty,” and who also drew a tremendous performance from another actor with whom he would develop an interesting history.

Later directed by Mendes again in the James Bond capers “Skyfall” and “Spectre,” Daniel Craig was a rising, respected British actor who made a very un-Bond-like and impressively American impression in “Road to Perdition” as Newman’s son, a mistake-prone weakling whose attempts to earn his father’s respect only gain him scorn instead. Indeed, Newman looks upon Hanks as more of a son to him, something that definitely doesn’t escape the jealous Craig’s notice.

Also on hand is Jude Law as an outwardly charming assassin recruited by Newman to do the dirty deed of getting rid of Hanks and son. Law’s character has rather odd tastes, extending to his photographing those he kills, and the performer does an excellent job of establishing the sort of charisma that would serve him well in romantic comedies then to come.

Q: Who is the actress who plays the newest member of the “FBI: International” team, and what has she done before?

A: Christina Wolfe is the performer who has portrayed FBI Supervisory Intelligence Analyst Amanda Tate starting in the CBS drama’s third season, which concludes Tuesday, May 21 (it has been renewed for a fourth year). She was brought in to help fill the opening left by founding cast member Heida Reed, who left at the start of Season 3 when her character Jamie Kellett left the team to go back to America and continue her work with the FBI out of Washington, D.C.

Though the London, England-born Wolfe went by a different name — Christina Ulfsparre — earlier in her career, she’s also known for her series roles on E! Entertainment Television’s “The Royals” (as Kathryn Davis), The CW’s “Batwoman” (as Julia Pennyworth) and Syfy’s “The Ark” (as Cat Brandice). She also was featured in the 2022 Netflix movie “The Weekend Away,” playing a woman who disappears after getting a friend (played by Leighton Meester) to take a trip to Croatia with her. Additionally, she had a role opposite Kelen Coleman and Jacqueline Bisset in the 2019 Lifetime film “Adriana Trigiani’s Very Valentine.” Wolfe had professional training at Drama Studio London, and she did much of her early acting overseas. That included the movies “From A to B,” “Level Up” and “Hercules Reborn,” plus such other TV work as “Doctor Mateo,” “West End Girls,” “Drowning in Sunshine” and “Holby City.”

Ernest Borgnine makes an Oscarwinning ‘Marty’

A great example of a “little” film that made an enormous impact, “Marty” has been loved by audiences for almost 70 years. Adapted from a television play by Paddy Chayefsky, the 1955 picture becomes part of this month’s Turner Classic Movies “First Name Basis” series on Wednesday, May 22. Often seen as a villain previously, Ernest Borgnine won the title role – and an Oscar for best actor – by playing an amiable but lonely Bronx butcher encouraged by others, including his live-in mother (Esther Minciotti), to find a love interest.

That person presents herself in the form of a shy teacher (Betsy Blair) who’s encountered by Marty during a night out at a dance hall, but he later lets himself be influenced by those around him who have their own reasons to opine that she’s not right for him. The result is a lovely and heartwarming movie that had Burt Lancaster among its producers, and also earned Academy Awards for best picture, Chayefsky’s screenplay and debuting director Delbert Mann.

New York Liberty looking to erase memories of last year’s final

The 2024 WNBA season continues with an electrifying matchup as the talented New York Liberty visit the reinvigorated Minnesota Lynx Saturday, May 25, at Target Center in Minneapolis. Fans can catch all the action live on CBS.

After an incredible 2023 season that saw the Liberty reach the WNBA final for the fifth time in franchise history, 2023 WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart, alongside the Liberty, are hungry to get back to the promised land after falling 70-69 in Game 4 of last year’s WNBA final.

Despite coming up short in the final, optimism remains with a new season underway.

“We know what happened last year, and the fact we didn’t achieve our goal will motivate us, but it’s not what we’re thinking about the entire season,” Stewart said, speaking with the Washington Post at this year’s training camp. “I’m really excited to get things going with a new and old group and build chemistry. Now most of us have a year under our belt, what are we going to do bigger on and off the court?” Stewart said. While the ultimate goal of winning a championship was not achieved, the Liberty did improve their overall record, finishing the season 32-8. Stewart averaged 23 points per game, along with 9.3 rebounds, and set the WNBA record for most 40-point games in a single season (four).

For the Lynx, the 2023 season was full of positives for a team that outperformed expectations in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year. The team went 19-21 during the regular season, earning the sixth seed in the WNBA playoffs.

“To sell that many copies in a month is a pretty big deal for a bookstore,” they said.

Sage reached out to a publishing representative for Source Books, who was interested to learn that the spike in sales was not an active book club, but an enthusiastic bookseller. They remember thinking that this is the coolest selling books can get. Then, a couple months later, with sales still rising, Sage received a video message from the author.

“I can only assume you’re like driving to people’s houses and just throwing it at their door like a newspaper,” Turton said in the video. “I don’t know how you’ve done it.”

Not only had Sage’s favorite author of one of their favorite books sent a personal thank you message, but he followed it with a signed copy of the book, with some extra doodles inside.

When I catch up with Turton over Zoom on Tuesday, he dwells on the absurdity of life as an author.

“How I make my living is like loads of lovely people I’ll never meet sort of saying they like my books to complete strangers,” he said.

Turton traveled for five years after university, teaching in Shanghai, China, or writing for the English-language page of South American newspapers, before landing as a travel writer. But the idea of writing an Agatha-Christie style mystery wouldn’t leave his mind.

Five years ago, supported by his wife, he turned to writing full time. To bring his books to life, Turton uses some immense self-discipline to write 2,500 words each day. If he misses a day, he will add those words to the next day’s total and write 5,000 words. And he’s a brutal self-editor, known for completely throwing out first drafts of his work.

For “The Last Murder at the End of the World,” Turton scrapped an 111,000-word draft.

“It was rubbish,” he said. “It was truly, truly bullocks.”

He also threw out drafts of similar lengths for both of his first two books. His second novel, “The Devil and the Dark Water,” also a bestseller, was set on a haunted ship in 1632, and featured a Sherlock Holmes and Watson-style detective duo. “End of the World,” he said, is set 90 years after the world has ended.

“So everyone on the planet is

dead apart from 122 people who don’t know anything about violence,” Turton said. “They don’t know anything about hate. They’ve never had an argument. They’re a beautiful, perfect, lovely, selfless society and then one of them turns up dead.”

Each novel is a high-concept mystery that takes Turton years to craft. Each, he tries to make different from the last — in part for his own amusement. Yet, he said fans still see some sort of essential “Stuness” to the work.

“What I love about Stuart Turton is he gives you a page turner you can’t tear yourself away from while still asking you the big questions of: what does it mean to be human, what we do we owe to each other, and are we capable of redemption?” Sage wrote in a bookseller review. Sage wrote the review for other booksellers, which was then chosen as a blurb for the advance book copy. And then, when Turton’s people were planning his U.S. book tour, they reached out to the Country Bookshelf to ask about an appearance.

“He’s a big author and Bozeman in this little town, so this isn’t necessarily something we were expecting at all,” Sage said. “We were thrilled.”

For the May 19 event, Sage will sit down with her favorite author to talk about his work.

“It just keeps getting better,” Sage said. “Who knew enthusiasm could snowball in such a big way.”
