For the Chronicle

Love Darts

A lot of bands aim for tightness in their musicianship, a synchronicity that often comes from extensive practice. Bozeman rock band The Love Darts say they are both tight and loose.

The current iteration of the band hasn’t rehearsed since spring 2022, instead learning new songs on the fly during performances. Musical decisions are made in the moment. Band members communicate with a glance their intentions to lengthen a solo or move on to the next bit of the song.

“The practices we don’t have are the gigs, which are like 20 practices,” guitarist Jeff Jensen said when I interviewed The Love Darts about new album, “Neon Girls,” at the beginning of March.

I met with three of the four members

of the band — Jimi Kehoe, brother Joey Kehoe and Jeff — at the end of their shift at Studio Coffee Roasters at the corner of 11th Avenue and College Street in Bozeman, which is owned by the Kehoe brothers’ mom, Noelle Johnson. Later, I caught up with drummer Graham Owen via email. Owen loves the band, joining them in unleashing blood and sweat during each raucous performance, but said he gets his fill of the bandmates on the road and has no desire to join them at Studio. He’s a night owl, and isn’t a big fan of coffee, I learn.

“Neon Girls” was recorded in Portland in summer 2022 with producer Gregg Williams and released on Valentine’s Day this year. The album is currently available on streaming services and songs have been in heavy rotation on KGLT. I asked about hard copies, mentioning my version of the last album “Girly”

— a burnt CD with a copier paper insert, handed to me by Jimi and Joey’s dad, Jim Kehoe, during my radio show one Monday. As music director and leader of the apprentice program, Jim was my introduction to KGLT. Over the years, I got to know him and watched his sons grow both in the studio and as musicians.

The Kehoe brothers are steeped in Bozeman’s rock history. Their parents met at the Filling Station and formed the band Love Chrome. Jim would go on to play in bands like Metropolitans, Schmutz and Giant Squid. Most recently, he has been sitting in with Band Universal Triumphant, usually referred to as B.U.T., pronounced like “butt.” The band opened for the “Neon Girls” album release show at a packed Rialto downtown. Noelle was in bands like Kay and Homes Without Pelicans.

SHEMAR MOORE

“We Were the Lucky Ones” (March 28)

Based on Georgia Hunter’s New York Times bestselling novel, this television adaptation is inspired by the incredible true story of one Jewish family separated at the start of World War II, determined to survive and reunite. It demonstrates how, in the face of this dark time, the human spirit can endure and even thrive.

Joey King, Logan Lerman, Hadas Yaron, Henry-Lloyd Hughes, Amit Rahav and Sam Woolf are among the cast.

Shemar Moore escaped the end of “S.W.A.T.” once before, but this time all indications are that the finale really is near.

The reboot of the 1970s police drama, seen Fridays on CBS (and streaming on Paramount+), had been canceled after its sixth season, until an outcry from fans prompted the powers that be to take another look at the decision, with the series ultimately being renewed for a seventh year, which is airing now. That has enabled the current “S.W.A.T.” to last more than twice as long as the original version, which itself only spent two seasons (1975-76) on ABC.

Before the charismatic Moore assumed Steve Forrest’s earlier series role as S.W.A.T. leader Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, he was well known to viewers from a couple of other long-running TV turns. For his role as Malcolm Winters — whose agenda and behavior were highly questionable on some occasions — in the CBS weekday serial “The Young and the Restless,” he earned a Daytime Emmy Award and seven NAACP Image Awards. His initial run in that show lasted from 1994 to 2002, but he has returned to it for short stints several times since.

While he went on from that program to the then-WB Network’s (now The CW) “Birds of Prey,” Moore had his next long-term TV engagement in CBS’s “Criminal Minds,” where he was a founding cast member as FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit member Derek Morgan, a part he played for the series’ first 11 seasons, before he returned for guest appearances in the 12th and 13th seasons. Of course, the end of “S.W.A.T.” begs the question of whether Moore might play Morgan again in the Paramount+ continuation, “Criminal Minds: Evolution,” but only time will tell.

“Fright Krewe” - Season 2 (March 29)

As the threat of Belial looms large in this family animated series, the Fright Krewe and their newfound supernatural allies, the rougrarous and vampires, come together for an unprecedented battle to save the world. But with Belial resurrecting every demonic entity known to evil kind will the superpowers gifted to the teens by the loas prove stronger than the diabolical forces unleashed?

Whether that reprise happens for Moore, it seems likely that he’ll turn up again on television in some capacity. Having had substantial turns in three different series makes it a reasonably good bet that there’s more Moore to come.

‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ remains amusingly magical

An original yet universal plot... an overnight star... enduring charm... “Four Weddings and a Funeral” checks a lot of the boxes that keeps a movie hugely popular over time.

Director Mike Newell’s British 1994 comedy — which MGM+ presents Friday, March 29 — opened a cottage industry of such films. Many of them have continued to involve writer and eventual director Richard Curtis, who used his own nuptials-attending experiences to weave the story of seemingly eternal bachelor Charles and his close group of friends and acquaintances (and their respective love lives).

The casting of Charles is key, since it’s hard if not impossible to imagine “Four Weddings and a Funeral” without Hugh Grant. He had done a number of period dramas in which he didn’t necessarily stand out, but the boyish vulnerability he brought to this role made all the difference. It also kept serving him well in other projects, including the Curtis-generated “Notting Hill” and “Love Actually.”

Charles and his immediate group attend weddings quite regularly, and at one, he meets an alluring American named Carrie (Andie MacDowell). By the time their encounter is over and she has to return to the U.S., they’ve gotten to know each other quite intimately. They’re destined to cross paths again — and again — and when they do, surprises will be in store.

That relationship is central to “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” tying together what essentially are long vignettes, each focused on one of the title occasions. However, Newell and Curtis are smart to give ample time as well to a marvelous array of supporting players who all have their moments in the course of the picture.

Katy Perry

Q: I heard that Katy Perry is going to leave “American Idol” after this season. Is there any chance she might change her mind?

A: Well, there’s always the potential for someone to change their mind about anything … but in making her announcement during an appearance on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” last month, she seemed to leave the door open for a possible return to “American Idol” someday “if (the producers will) have me.”

Perry will have done seven seasons on the talent competition as a judge — along with Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, spanning the entirety of the program’s ABC run thus far — when the current Season 22 concludes, and she has indicated that she is working in new music. The show’s production schedule definitely involves a time commitment, with the judges having to go to different cities during the audition phase, then making sure they’re in Hollywood on a regular basis once the given season’s episodes are centered there.

If Perry were to return to “Idol” after leaving, it wouldn’t be the first time a judge has done that. Jennifer Lopez was a regular on the show during its earlier Fox era during Seasons 10 and 11, then she left for Season 12 but returned for Seasons 13, 14 and 15. Also, if Perry (who took a brief break from “Idol” last season) came back to the series, it wouldn’t necessarily be as a full-time judge … which might be more conducive to the schedule she apparently wants to get back to with her own music career. She could step back in as a guest mentor, a position that Jelly Roll and Tori Kelly are filling this season.

“One thing will always remain true. The show [Top Chef] is not about me and being the host. It’s not about Gail [Simmons]; it’s not about Tom [Colicchio]; it’s about the chefs. “I’d heard of [the ‘Remembrance of Earth’s Past’ book trilogy], and I knew the repu- tation that these books had for being adult-focused, very, very dense sci-fi, but rooted in a sort of scientific reality, as well, almost. But I hadn’t read them. I think what David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] and Alex [Woo] are very good at is taking the books, which are quite dense and quite scientific, and making them approachable and making them feel familiar and making them human. So, if you’re fans of the books, you’ll love the show, but the show is a sort of slightly different thing.”

‘True Lies’ is still action-packed fun — honestly classic corner

A decade after Arnold Schwarzenegger and director James Cameron first had big success together with “The Terminator,” they reunited for what became another massive hit with “True Lies,” the 1994 comedy-adventure that marks its 30th anniversary with an FX showing Thursday, March 28. Schwarzenegger plays a software salesman … or at least, that’s what his wife and daughter (Jamie Lee Curtis, Eliza Dushku) believe. He’s actually a highly skilled secret agent who’s on the trail of terrorists; in turn, they’re also after him.

Complications eventually bring his spouse into the spy game along with him, and the premise was used again in a CBS series that had a relatively brief run last year. The film’s stunts are fabulous, particularly one toward the end that pivotally involves Florida’s Seven Mile Bridge; Tom Arnold, Bill Paxton, Tia Carrere, Art Malik and (in one of his last prominent on-screen roles) Charlton Heston also are in the entertaining cast.

Sabres host Maple Leafs in final regular season matchup

The National Hockey League returns with more action in the East as the Toronto Maple Leafs head to Buffalo, New York, to take on the Buffalo Sabres in their final regular season matchup. The game airs Saturday, March 30, at the KeyBank Center, with the coverage broadcasting live on ESPN.

This season has been less than ideal for the Sabres, with the team sitting in the bottom half of the Eastern Conference standings going into April and their 13-year playoff drought potentially growing another year older. Additionally, expectations going into this season were much higher for the team, having just signed franchise all-star defenseman Rasmus Dahlin to a massive eight-year, $88-million contract extension.

While the Sabres sit outside of a playoff spot, the Swedish blueliner continues to prove his worth, as Dahlin finished ninth in goals amongst all defensemen — including a 73-point campaign in 78 games last season — and ended up eighth in the James Norris Memorial Trophy race. He also recorded the best defensive season of his career so far, with 45 takeaways, 102 hits and 132 blocked shots.

The offensively talented Maple Leafs, meanwhile, could use some improvement on their own blue line. This season, the Maple Leafs are firing on all cylinders with Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Morgan Reilly leading the way offensively, with Matthews entering the month of March with 53 goals. However, while the Maple Leafs can score with ease, keeping the puck out of the net has been a struggle as they hold a 3.16 goals-against average, with injuries to Mark Giordano not helping the cause.

As both teams are seemingly on opposite sides of the standings, look for the Sabres to come out swinging as Dahlin will surely be looking to shut down Matthews and the Maple Leafs’ offensive prowess.

“It’s always been in the family,” Jimi said.

When I asked Joey if he had any option other than to rock, he was quick to say “no,” but not unhappy about the path.

I wrote about The Love Darts first iteration around Valentine’s Day 2019, the year after Jimi and members of his high school band the Permians parted ways. Only Jimi remains from that version of the band, which went through a variety of members in those first years, and eventually disbanded when Jimi decided to move to Portland, Oregon, to pursue music in a larger city.

He never moved. Instead, Jimi connected with Jeff while sitting in as a hired guitar on a King Ropes tour. Their easy friendship provided a new start for The Love Darts.

“Maybe I’ll just stay in Bozeman and play with this Jeff guy,” Jimi remembers thinking. “He’s pretty cool.”

Joey was a natural addition on bass. Though still a teenager, his older brother was already impressed by his rock chops and had visions of forming some sort of family band.

The last addition was Owen, who said that joining The Love Darts was one of the easiest decisions of his life after a five-year stint in Washington state, where

someone broke into his practice space and stole his drums as well as his will to perform. Driving the remains of his life in a U-haul back to Montana in spring 2021, Graham posted a photo at the state line. Almost immediately he received a message from Jimi. The timing was serendipitous. Jimi had just been discussing the idea of a new drummer with Jeff, who initially kept the beat, when he saw the post. Everyone was thrilled at the prospect.

“I had played shows with his band The Permians countless times,” Graham wrote about Jimi. “I was always in absolute awe that such a young kid was more talented than the rest of us combined. So I was completely giddy to join a project with him.”

dead set against it? Great chapter book to read aloud at bedtime.

The feeling was mutual. Jimi remembers going to see bands like Tiny Iota, Big Montana and the Swingin’ Ds and Good News from France for the sole purpose of watching Graham on the drums.

Along with its musicians, the band has matured. Jimi recognizes the first iteration of The Love Darts as “pure insanity.” Songs didn’t have much structure and he hadn’t developed as a songwriter.

“It was just like really cool and loud,” he said.

Jimi wrote all of the originals on “Girly. For “Neon Girls,” Joey and Jeff have contributed to the writing and dubbed themselves “dumb poets” in the process. When I ask for an example, Jeff pulls out “Now I’m drinking

on a joyless margarita where once there was a G-string in my face,” a line describing a smoothie from the album’s opening track “Five Over One.”

While much has changed for The Love Darts, my conversation with Jimi eventually turned to something that has remained consistent: his desire to entertain. For The Love Darts, a show should be exactly that, a show. Jimi still talks about the disappointment of seeing musical heroes on stage after listening to their albums and picturing what they must be like live. On stage, the Love Darts exude a sense of uninhibited fun and most want the audience to share in that experience.

“Live music can really suck,” Joey said. “You have to find something to get people engaged.”

While the band’s stage energy is something to behold, the guys are generally soft spoken and sweet. They are some of my favorite humans, and I find myself stopping into Studio to see them as much as to get caffeinated. Performance is a catharsis, they say, a way to release steam and allow the four members of The Love Darts to continue to spread the love to their community.

But rock isn’t always easy. They tend to sacrifice their bodies to the art, rocking from their backs or knees on the floor or jumping from amps or tables depending on the venue. I asked Jimi

about another form of rock sacrifice: smashing guitars. It only happened once, he said, when he was 16. I was at the Filling Station that night, and beyond the smashing of the guitar, my memory lands on Jim, a proud rock father, cradling its broken pieces in his arms. This changed, however, on Saint Patrick’s Day, when a crack in the neck of his guitar led to its inevitable smashing on stage. He only meant to detach the part that was already breaking, Jimi said. But the crowd had other ideas and he found them throwing it against a wall outside after the show.

Joey and Jeff have never officially smashed guitars. Jeff said he likes his too much. Joey throws his bass around, but said it’s pretty much indestructible.

While the front three jump around, Graham tries to hold it all together from the drum kit, getting his own bloody knuckles from the often marathon 4-hour shows.

“Everything else you’re hearing is maximum chaos, so I think that it wouldn’t be palatable if there wasn’t this sort of scaffolding in place,” he wrote. “...Ultimately though, playing with a shit eating grin on your face is more important than anything.”
