‘Edgy and powerful’

Despite the overwhelming popularity of the plays and prose of William Shakespeare, very little is known about the man himself. Maybe this is part of the fascination with telling his story.

“Who was the person that captured the human experience so well that we’re still doing this rich text 400 years later?” Sarah West, who plays Shakespeare in a Bozeman Actors Theatre production of “Born With Teeth” speculated after rehearsal on Tuesday.

West, who studied classical theater, explains that Shakespeare’s plays are still performed exactly as written because the playwright had an uncanny ability to tap into true human emotion, to see our foibles, our flaws, our strengths and our humanity and bring them to the page and then the stage.

“To imagine who he could have been to have had that wonderful heart and mind and soul to do that is fascinating,” West said.

“Born With Teeth,” which dives into the lives and relationship between Shakespeare and contemporary Christopher “Kit” Marlowe, is a new play written by Liz Duffy Adams. It premiered at the Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas, in spring 2022. Its next stop is the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which will include the play in their summer season from March to October. The play is recommended for adult audiences and includes references to sexuality and sensuality and contains strong language.

have benefited in particular from his presence — all of which strongly suggests that when his revival of Dan Conner ends, there still will be a lot for Goodman to do, and for his fans to see.

Birthdate: June 20, 1952

Before his “Roseanne”-spinoff sitcom “The Conners” began its current sixth round Wednesdays on ABC, The CW made a deal for repeats of the show, which it’s showing on Sundays and (in two back-to-back airings) Thursdays. Goodman, a Primetime Emmy winner (for “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”) is continuing his portrayal of Dan Conner, the patriarch who’s keeping his family united in the aftermath of his wife Roseanne’s death.

In a sense, “The Conners” — which will soon air its 100th episode — has brought the often gregarious Goodman full circle. Though he had some credits in movies — “Raising Arizona” (1987), “The Big Easy,” (1986), etc. — and on stage (including “Big River”) before “Roseanne,” playing Dan made him a true household name, opening him up to many more career opportunities, many of which he used his “Roseanne” hiatus time for. “Sea of Love” (1989), “Arachnophobia” (1990), “Barton Fink” (1991), “The Hudsucker Proxy” (1994) and “The Babe” (1992) were among the notable films he made during the show’s original 1988-97 run.

Checking in with JOHN GOODMAN

“Roseanne” wasn’t revived until 2018 (although briefly, since circumstances led to its eventual conversion into “The Conners”), but in the interim, Goodman remained a familiar TV face. He starred in the series “Normal, Ohio,” “Center of the Universe” and “Alpha House,” but he also made impressions in recurring roles on other shows. Among those were “The West Wing,” “Extreme,” “Damages” and “Community.”

Still, movie work remained a big part of Goodman’s career during that period. “The Big Lebowski” (1998), “Argo” (2012), “Flight” (2012) and “10 Cloverfield Lane” (2016) are among other films that

Michael Douglas’s ‘Instinct’ was, and still is, good

More than 30 years later, “Basic Instinct” has kept its basics as a marvelously adult thriller.

Director Paul Verhoeven and writer Joe Eszterhas stirred considerable discord — even with their leading lady — when the film (which MGM+ Hits presents Tuesday, Feb. 27) was released in 1992, but it remains a lushly filmed and well-performed melodrama that did nothing to diminish the box-office power Michael Douglas was enjoying at the time. He’d earned a best-actor Oscar for “Wall Street,” but he still was the go-to star to play men prone to give in to their emotional weaknesses.

Here, that man is Nick Curran, a San Francisco homicide detective still recovering from a tragic incident that welded his job to his personal vices — thus earning him the nickname “Shooter.” His investigation of an ex-rock star’s vicious murder-via-ice-pick puts him and his partner Gus (the ever-likable George Dzundza) in the trajectory of the victim’s girlfriend: Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone), a behaviorally cool novelist who’s basing her newest book on Curran, to his evident dismay. Her attitude does little to dissuade the cops that they should consider her a suspect in the killing, affirmed by their police-station interrogation of her (in a famous scene that Stone reportedly was furious about, maintaining that Verhoeven filmed her in a prurient way she didn’t expect). Even as Curran can’t make up his mind about her professed innocence, he’s drawn to her, a fact that doesn’t please Catherine’s live-in girlfriend (Leilani Sarelle, later known by her then-married last name Ferrer, and impressively tough and vulnerable at the same time here).

Jeremy Allen White

Q: Jeremy Allen White has been on quite an awards track lately for “The Bear.” What are some of the other things he has done?

A: Indeed, the actor has been reaping some big rewards for his starring role in the FX-produced Hulu series about life and work at a Chicago sandwich shop. Last month alone, White earned a Primetime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award (his second) and a Critics’ Choice Award (his second) for his work in the show — among the many other honors it has received, including being named Best (or Outstanding) Comedy Series at all three of those ceremonies in January.

Brooklyn, N.Y., native White has been acting professionally since 2006, when he appeared in the movie “Beautiful Ohio” and the short-lived NBC series “Conviction.” He also did guest roles in “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” but his best-known part before “The Bear” likely was that of Phillip “Lip” Gallagher in Showtime’s “Shameless,” maintaining that role throughout the show’s 11-season run. Additionally, he appeared opposite Julia Roberts in the Prime Video series “Homecoming.” White also has stayed quite active in movies, earning good reviews most recently for the wrestling drama “The Iron Claw.” Among his other films are “Fingernails,” “Fremont,” “The Birthday Cake,” “The Rental,” “After Everything,” “Rob the Mob,” “Bad Turn Worse,” “Movie 43,” “The Time Being,” “Twelve,” “After School” and “The Speed of Life.” Also, White is becoming known as a spokesperson for a popular brand of men’s underwear, a job he began just this year.

TCM offers a truly ‘Fantastic Voyage’

“Fantastic Voyage” is one film that has a truly valid title. Turner Classic Movies presents the 1966 sci-fi saga on Monday, Feb. 26, as part of a “31 Days of Oscar” day of nominees and winners for best visual or special effects. This picture understandably took its year’s Academy Award in that category, also winning for best art direction in color … and since the movie does nothing less than re-create the inside of the human body, it’s not that huge a shock it would win those honors if the relevant craftspeople did their jobs right.

They certainly did, as shown by the journey taken by a miniaturized crew to operate on a brain-injured scientist from within him. Stephen Boyd, Raquel Welch (in one of her first major roles), Arthur Kennedy, Donald Pleasence and William Redfield play the quintet who are shrunk down and injected into the patient. The result is inventive and dazzling storytelling that still can mesmerize viewers, despite how much farther screen effects have come in the almost 60 years since.

And don’t miss the rest of the weekend’s MLS action, as Toronto FC takes on New England at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, Sunday, March 3, also airing live on Apple TV+.

It’s only Messi’s second season with Inter Miami, and expectations are high; after the 36-year-old Argentinian native signed on with Miami mid-season last year, the club brought home its first League Cup title. With the addition of Messi’s former Barcelona teammates Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets, coach Gerardo Martino has a solid lineup at his disposal to build off the team’s tremendous end to the 2023 campaign. However, Martino is keeping things in perspective, regardless of the hype.

“I know we have an excellent team that will compete well, but we have to be aware of what this generates in our rivals,” Martino said, speaking to USA Today. “When the Wizards play Milwaukee, they play even better because they are playing against a team that has a lot of big names. We have to prepare for that. We have to move away from talking about the names and the past and focus on what we can achieve now.”

As Inter Miami looks to keep its streak going through 2024, Toronto FC is looking to significantly improve on all fronts after concluding the 2023 campaign with a 4-1020 record and a league-worst 59 goals against.

Heading into its second regular-season match against an elite squad in New England, coach John Herdman looks to lean on the leadership of players like Jonathan Osorio and Lorenzo Insigne as Toronto aims to put the past behind it.

“The leadership group are key to that,” Herdman said. “Whether it was my time with the women’s team, my time with the men’s team, the strength of that leadership will determine how far we’re able to pioneer as a group.”

The play will run from Feb. 23 to March 10, with performances on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 7 p.m. in the upstairs ballroom of the Eagles Lodge in downtown Bozeman. Knowing the works of Shakespeare and Marlowe or knowledge of the time period will add bits of context (Such as the arrest of another contemporary, Thomas Kyd, who they call “Tom”) but is not necessary to enjoy the piece.

It’s the 1590s and a young Shakespeare meets Marlowe in the back room of a London pub. They have been commissioned to collaborate on a history play, that will eventually become “Henry VI.” Shakespeare is on unsteady ground. This is new territory for him and Marlowe is already famous.

“So great was Marlowe’s creative talent that, had he not died an early death, perhaps we would now be celebrating Montana Marlowe in the Parks instead of Montana Shakespeare in the Parks,” Bozeman Actors Theatre board member Kevin Brustuen wrote in Bozeman Magazine.

Shakespeare, green to the playwriting game, is eager to get to writing. Marlowe would rather discuss religion and politics or wax about his own exploits and famous friends.

Marlowe was already well-known in England for his very popular ‘Doctor Faustus,’ ‘Tamburlaine,’ ‘Edward II’ and ‘The Jew of Malta,’” Brustuen stated.

Misperceptions about land, politics, liberty, and self-determination threaten the well-being of people and communities across the country. Gaines Quammen seeks to reconcile these with the West’s enduring myths and complex history.

“You think I’m arguing?” Marlowe asks when the pair have a heated discussion over a character’s title, bishop or cardinal. “I’m not even sharpening my teeth.”

“You were born with teeth,” Shakespeare replies, after which both lay claim to the phrase for future writings.

“It’s political. It’s romantic. It’s funny,” Beaudin said. “It’s edgy and powerful.”

“Born With Teeth” also provides a medium for those involved in the theater and theatergoers to dive into one of their favorite figures.

“Shakespeare is the greatest, the GOAT,” Beaudin said. “Nothing against Marlowe, who would have been also the GOAT had he lived longer, but he died very young as we’ll find out in the play.”

to dig into the perceived minds of writers with so much star status in literary circles.

“It has been so fun to bring to life these icons of the theater world especially,” Dawson said. “What happens when you humanize them? When you bring them down to Earth and we inhabit them?”

Director Marc Beaudin was drawn to the piece for how it places “two very brilliant, very passionate writers” in a cauldron of sorts, their poetry simmering with political ideals and rebellion amid a nightmare society that is essentially a totalitarian police state. Plays must pass government censors and it was dangerous to be Catholic, or atheist. And one certainly didn’t speak ill of the monarchy.

There are no assumed British accents here. “Born With Teeth” dives into the heart of the relationship between Marlowe and Shakespeare. Casting two female actors to play the roles in some way softens their relationship, allowing viewers a glance inside without some of the modern aversion to homosexual relationships.

“I love what I’ve seen,” Beaudin said. “I love what they’ve done with the roles. Perhaps we’ve found more tenderness and more of the relationship between them.”

There’s a commentary on writing here, and on the ability to know someone by what they write.

“We give ourselves away in every line,” Marlowe says.

“Maybe you do, no one is studying me,” Shakespeare replies.

“There are those who will,” Marlowe says.
