Developer and restaurateur Brett Evje likes old things. Objects that may seem like junk to some can be a rare prize for Evje. Take The Westerner, a new venue opening this weekend next to Stacey’s on Gallatin Gateway’s main drag. The entire concept was based around an old thing — a horseshoe-shaped sign Evje bought five years ago in Bottineau, North Dakota. The sign was mostly wood and featured a man hanging on to a bucking bronco. Underneath, it said, “The Westerner,” which Evje considered to be the perfect name for a country-themed music venue “There’s a huge demand for this right now,” Evje said. “There’s a love of Western things, a love of dancing and a love of live music.” Enter The Westerner, which Evje, wearing a T-shirt emblazoned “honky tonkin” when we met Monday morning describes as Montana’s only real honky tonk — “a place for live music and dancing and for Friday and Saturday night fraternizing. The music, he said, quoting the bartender from “The Blues Brothers” movie, will be both kinds; “country and Western.” “I love country music because it’s three chords and the truth,” Evje text later, “Simple yet profound.” The Westerner will operate as a venue, opening for events both public and private. Eveje envisions it as a community space as well as a music venue. When it is the latter, there will be no re-entry. And public events are 21-and-over. It fits in well with the offerings at Stacey’s and the Old Saloon, both owned by Evje and partners. Evje wants The Westerner to feel as authentic to a Texas honky tonk as possible, including its smell. Though I couldn’t quite detect tobacco on the nose, Evje went so far as to encourage workers who were smoking to do it inside. (This will not be the case now the venue is open to the public.) More than smoke, the space held the subtle sweetness of the wood that covered every surface. Surely, it will smell more authentic once beer is spilled.

RACHEL HERGETT, FOR THE CHRONICLE

The vintage sign, photographed Jan. 22, that hangs on the front Westerner in Gallatin Gateway provided inspiration for the entire project. It was acquired by owner Brett Evje five years ago and restored by artist Ole Nelson. 2

With the support of their tight-knit group of friends, family and fellow WWE Superstars, the dynamic duo somehow always manage to pull off the impossible.

Jennifer Nettles is still making music, as she proved with her recent performance at the Daytime Emmy Awards, but she continues to embrace career variety. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, who came to fame as half of the country music duo Sugarland, returns to help counsel four rustic fellows on a number of metropolitan marital options as “Farmer Wants a Wife” starts its second season on Fox, Thursday, Feb. 1. This time, the farmers in question are from Missouri, Tennessee, Colorado and Florida … and as Nettles goes to their home bases, she learns anew that romance can surmount barriers of location and upbringing if the love match is right. Nettles also appeared in last fall’s movie “The Exorcist: Believer,” so she clearly is game to tackle different projects as they come up, but music still is a huge part of her menu. At December’s Daytime Emmys, she gave vocal backing to the “In Memoriam” segment that was led by a tribute to journalism icon Barbara Walters. It put Nettles back on television in a month when she had hosted the annual “CMA Country Christmas” special for several years. The appearance also reaffirmed Nettles’ current pursuits as a solo talent, though she has said that her ventures with Sugarland partner Kristian Bush aren’t necessarily over. Along with former member Kristen Hall, they formed the group in 2003, and the trio scored such hits as “Baby Girl” and “Something More.” Nettles and Bush continued to enjoy tandem success with tunes including “Want To” and “Stay,” before they went their separate ways in 2012 (though they reunited briefly several years later). Since then, Nettles has starred on Broadway (“Chicago,” “Waitress”), in Dolly Parton-inspired NBC movies and in the HBO series “The

‘Air Force One’ still flies high “Get off my plane!” For many viewers, that legendary line defines “Air Force One,” the 1997 action hit that became another feather in the resume of Harrison Ford. Currently streaming on Peacock, the Wolfgang Petersen-directed adventure presents Ford as the kind of president Americans need in a time of duress. And Ford’s President James Marshall certainly knows from duress: The military veteran’s official airplane is commandeered by terrorists posing as a news Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford crew (great security procedures there) to mastermind star in “Air Force One” a comrade’s release from prison, with Gary Oldman as a thoroughly convincing leader of the bad guys. His rage is palpable when he’s made to believe the president has left the plane via an escape pod (the real Air Force One reportedly doesn’t have one), but in fact, Marshall is hiding in the aircraft’s belly, improvising a counterattack as he goes. Our stalwart if vulnerable hero has good reason for conquering the invading enemies, since their hostages include his wife and daughter (Wendy Crewson, Liesel Matthews). Also among the captives are various members of the president’s staff, some represented by such fine actors as William H. Macy and Paul Guilfoyle ... but there’s also a traitor among them who’s secretly in cahoots with the terrorists. While the battle aboard Air Force One is unfolding in the air, the vice president — played by Glenn Close (sorry, Kamala Harris, she got there first) — is trying to help as much as she can from the ground. She has to withstand cabinet members who want the president’s power rescinded under the circumstances, with Dean Stockwell as an especially zealous official who warns Close that history will remember her for what she does. Or doesn’t do. A typically excellent Jerry Goldsmith score captures the majesty of the presidential office as well as the heroism displayed in the situation, and not surprisingly, terrific aerial stunts also are part of the recipe here. Those go right up to the final scene, with a midair transfer the only way to save those aboard Air Force One, rapidly losing altitude as a result of all that has transpired. (In real life, Ford has gained added fame for being a pilot himself.) FRIDAYTHURSDAY, JANUARY 26FEBRUARY 1, 2024

Scott Patterson OF SULLIVAN’S CROSSING ON CW/CTV Q: Did Scott Patterson do any other series between “Gilmore Girls” and “Sullivan’s Crossing”? A: Yes. He was a star of “Aliens in America,” a 2007-08 CW sitcom about a foreign student trying to assimilate into a Wisconsin community. Patterson played the patriarch of the youth’s host family, and he also had a recurring part spanning several episodes in The CW’s 2008-13 “90210” update. And technically, though, one could consider the Netflix-originated 2016 “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” sequel — in which the actor reprised his role as Luke — a series, since it consisted of four episodes. Patterson also was in NBC’s 2010-11 drama series “The Event,” about aliens who came to Earth as World War II was ending. He had a 2011 guest shot on CBS’ “CSI: Miami,” and he made several cable movies including the Lifetime projects “Love at the Christmas Table” (2012) and “Kidnapped: The Hannah Anderson Story” (2015). Based on novels by Robyn Carr, “Sullivan’s Crossing” ended its first season on The CW in December, and much earlier than that (last May) on its originating Canadian network CTV … but it will be back for Season 2 on both outlets (with the dates for that to be specified once production of the episodes is completed in Nova Scotia). The renewal is a good thing, because the show’s first-year cliffhanger made it seem that central character Maggie Sullivan (played by Morgan Kohan) was leaving her father (Patterson) and the title campground behind to return to Boston for good.

‘Something’s Gotta Give’ for Nicholson and Keaton

BY JAY BOBBIN

When it comes to giving performers of certain ages roles that are fun and vital, it’s hard to beat Nancy Meyers at her game. Most of the writer-director’s grown-up romantic fantasies have been enduring hits (“It’s Complicated,” “The Holiday,” etc.). That also applies to 2003’s “Something’s Gotta Give,” which Turner Classic Movies shows as part of its 100th-anniversary tribute to Columbia Pictures on Wednesday, Jan. 31. (Columbia actually co-produced the picture with Warner Bros.) Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton have ideal roles as a late-middle-age music executive and the playwright whose much-younger daughter (Amanda Peet) he’s involved with. They start to fall for each other through complications that include an also-much-younger doctor’s (Keanu Reeves) interest in Keaton’s character, who has a memorably hilarious crying jag that runs for about five minutes through a montage of intertwined scenes. With Frances McDormand and Jon Favreau also in the cast, this film is a total pleasure … and not only for older viewers.

Westerner/from 2 When Evje and his partners bought Stacey’s in Gallatin Gateway in 2020, the purchase included empty lots next to the building. Stacey’s already had the history, the feel of an old Western watering hole and eatery. But could they take a new building and give it the same feel? To fill the Westerner’s walls, Evje has been shopping online sites such as Facebook Marketplace, eBay and Craigslist. He points to the pieces of a 6-foot circular chandelier dating to 1965, with smiling Rockwell-like people enjoying their Busch beer on its panels, waiting to be assembled. He plugs in a Hamm’s beer sign with the Minnasota-centric slogan “The land of sky blue waters,” and I watch as the lights flicker on and the waterfall appears to start flowing. Later, Evje turns my eye toward an image I recognize instantly — an old College National Finals Rodeo poster from the days when Bozeman hosted that annual event. Each piece will add to the honky tonk feel, Evje said, much more than hanging the latest metal signs sent by beer distributors. Inside, The Westerner was still a bit of unfinished chaos on Monday. The bones were in place, and workers installed finishing touches like light fixtures and the sound system. Evje was certain he and the crew would be ready for

A stage spans the far wall, with “The Westerner” painted on the wood paneling behind the performance area. Restrooms and the green room and loading area flank its sides. Stools are set up along the railings surrounding a sunken dance floor, some two

At the front of the building, which does appear to be old, is an entry and a space that will house a taqueria, El Gallo Cantina, slated to open later this year for regular lunch and dinner hours. Evje has been privy to numerous menu tests and says the restaurant will bring more life to the space when events are not on the schedule. Upstairs, the building is set up

Evje, a fifth generation Montanan who went to Monforton school and currently lives “right down the street” from the venue, said Gateway is the perfect place to house the new venture. “It’s a little, great community that has been here forever, tucked off the road,” Evje said. “This community has always and will

And shuttles will run continuously between the venue and various Bozeman locations on event nights. Evje knows the area is growing and changing. He has leaned into the growth, seeking to both be part of the development and “keep things real.” “I honor the past,” he said. “I don’t hold onto it.” Aspirationally, Evje sees the space as a home for local country music acts to perform regularly, with touring acts on the bill as they pass through the area. “If I could get George Strait to walk on that stage, how great would that be?” Evje asked. “How great would that be?” The Westerner opened Thursday with a performance by Jesse Daniel, followed by two sold-out shows, Nikki Lane and Whitey Morgan and the 78s on Friday and Saturday, respectively. As of press time, tickets are still available for Whitey Morgan’s Sunday night show. Limited edition T-shirts and posters are for sale.Next Friday, Joe Nichols will headline a show to benefit military charities Big Sky Bravery and Talons Reach Foundation.
