Trevor Kennison completes a double backflip in a sit ski at Vail Pass in “Full Circle.”

Redefining what’s possible

RACHEL HERGETT For the Chronicle

Though posters for “Full Circle” show the moment Trevor Kennison, now 31, launched himself over the lip of Corbet’s Couloir in a sit ski, director Josh Berman insists the documentary is not a ski film. “It’s a human interest story,” Berman said over the phone this week, though he also insisted that it does have some of the best snow sports action he has ever seen. “The best way 2

to summarize it in my mind is it’s a story about turning tragedy into opportunity. It’s about how someone can choose to grow from a terrible situation and to better their position in life, which is, you know,

the polar opposite of the instinctive reaction to trauma.” Kennison approached Level 1 films in the summer of 2019 with the idea for a short web piece. Five years after he broke his back snowboarding on Vail Pass in Colorado, the adaptive athlete wanted to return to the site of the injury. He wanted to land the jump in a sit ski that he had been denied on two legs. He wanted redemption. Level 1 films, with producer and director Josh Berman at the helm, was a natural fit to document the moment. Berman,

who grew up skiing the mountains of southern Vermont and moved to Colorado in 2003, founded the production company to document the rise of freestyle skiing in America. The company made its name in the adventure sports world. “I was instantly hooked and super enthusiastic about the idea for the project,” Berman said. However, what the film became is something no one imagined. Now, it is not as much a story of redemption as it is redefinition. What can life look like after a spinal cord injury? “Full Circle,” which will be screened by the Bozeman Film Society in collaboration with Eagle Mount on Jan. 17, is a feature-length documentary that weaves Kennison’s story with that of Corbet’s Couloir

namesake Barry Corbet. Much of Corbet’s story seemed lost to time. In the film, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort ski patrollers and long-time locals describe Corbet’s Couloir as a test of sorts. It takes skill and bravery to drop off the cliff onto the steep snow field below. But all they knew about Corbet is that he was an adventurer who once looked at the couloir and said “someday someone will ski that.” And he did. Corbet was an athlete and filmmaker who made the first Jackson Hole promotional film, then went on to push the limits of what a person could do on skis in films like “Ski the Outer Limits” and “The Moebius Flip.” But in 1968, he fell out the door of a helicopter while filming and was paralyzed. “Invisible Beauty” (Jan. 18) “Death and Other Details” Season 1 (Jan. 16) Imogene Scott (Violett Beane) finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time and becomes the prime suspect in a locked-room murder mystery. To prove her innocence, she must partner with a man she despises, Rufus Cotesworth (Mandy Patinkin), the world’s greatest detective.

An essential memoir of fashion pioneer Bethann Hardison, this documentary shines a spotlight on the singular and unapologetic icon who, as a pioneering Black model, modeling agent and entrepreneur, has pushed the boundaries of fashion culture and has been at the forefront of progress throughout her career. Filmmakers Frédéric Tcheng and Hardison trace her impact on fashion from runway shows in the 1970s to roundtables about the lack of racial diversity in the early 2000s.

REID SCOTT 4

“The Baker” (Jan. 19) This action flick centers on a quiet, solitary Baker (Ron Perlman) whose estranged son (Joel David Moore) suddenly comes back into his life with a granddaughter (Emma Ho) he never knew existed. When his son disappears on a shady business opportunity, the baker must do everything he can to find his son and protect his granddaughter from the mob hitmen sent to find her.

If one thing is certain about “Law & Order,” it’s that change will be coming sooner or later — and usually sooner. The venerable NBC drama has seen numerous switches of stars over its long history, with departures by stars ranging from Michael Moriarty (“Courage Under Fire,” 1996), Paul Sorvino (“Goodfellas,” 1990) and Jerry Orbach (“Dirty Dancing,” 1987) to Jill Hennessy (“Crossing Jordan”), Angie Harmon (“Rizzoli & Isles”) and Elisabeth Rohm (“Angel”). As the Dick Wolf-produced show returns Thursday, Jan. 18, for the third season of its revival — and the 23rd of the original series overall — there’s yet another change in casting, with Reid Scott succeeding Jeffrey Donovan (“Burn Notice”) as one of the show’s New York police detectives. Thanks principally to the regular roles he had on “Veep” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” Scott may be better known for comedy than for the intense drama “Law & Order” typically delves into … but he’s not the first actor to come into the franchise from a comedic background. A major case in point is Anthony Anderson, who redefined his career by playing Det. Kevin Bernard, a role he reprised in the first season of the revival right after he finished “Black-ish” (on which Scott was a guest star). A scan of Scott’s television credits shows that he has moved back and forth between comedy and drama with regularity, something that’s likely to help him define his newest character as he works with Mehcad Brooks (“Desperate Housewives”) as his police partner and Camryn Manheim (“The Practice”) as their boss. While newcomers to the show often start from a very basic framework of who they’re supposed to be playing, that’s usually tailored more specifically to the specific actor as time goes on.

“Dangerous Waters” (Jan. 19) A young woman, her new boyfriend and her single mother embark on a sailing adventure to Bermuda. However, when criminals suddenly attack their boat, the pleasure trip turns into a desperate fight for survival and a quest for vengeance. Odeya Rush, Eric Dane, Saffron Burrows and Ray Liotta star.

It’s likely Scott had to jump right in, since his hiring was announced just as “Law & Order” was going back into production following the writers and actors strikes. As much as he may be getting on-the-job training in his early weeks with the show, he can take comfort in how enduring the show and its format have been — and those are likely to serve him well, as it has so many others, for as long as he wants to be there. Quentin Tarantino gives his take on late-1960s ‘Hollywood’ As celebrated as he is for his movies, Quentin Tarantino makes relatively few of them … so when he does, you can expect that you’re in for something unique. “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood,” currently streaming on Hulu, surely is that – a 2019 whirlwind of late-1960s pop culture as seen largely through the eyes of a has-been TV-Western star and his former stunt double. In those roles respectively, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt bring all of the watchable qualities they’re known for, and that’s really helpful as they play a couple of guys who remain pals while living on the fringe. That lifestyle eventually puts them on a Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio in course to meet Charles Manson (portrayed by “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” Damon Herriman), and the movie then takes an off-ramp into an exploration of one of the 20th century’s most infamous cults and heinous crimes. What’s really intriguing about “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood” is how vividly entertainment connoisseur Tarantino satisfies his own passions as he gets to revisit them in his own way. If you have a soft spot for TV’s “The Green Hornet” or Dean Martin’s Matt Helm movies, you’ll find nods to them here — the latter because the last of those spy adventures (“The Wrecking Crew”) involved actress Sharon Tate, played by Margot Robbie as Tate’s ultimately tragic story is considered here. Also getting a lot of attention (to the likely appreciation of true TV fans) is “Lancer,” which was an actual, short-lived Western series. Timothy Olyphant (“Justified”) and, in one of his final roles, Luke Perry play that show’s stars, James Stacy and Wayne Maunder. FRIDAYTHURSDAY, JANUARY 1218, 2024

Mark Cuban OF SHARK TANK ON ABC Q: I heard that Mark Cuban is leaving “Shark Tank.” Have he and the other current “sharks” been on the show from the start? A: Cuban has said that he will be staying with the popular ABC series for the rest of the current season and for the one after that, which will bring it to 16 seasons, and then he’ll depart from the panel. The entrepreneur has indicated that he wants to spend more time with his family, which he maintains is more challenging to do as his children get older. Cuban has been a regular on the show since its third year, and he had appeared as a guest in Season 2. Similarly, Lori Greiner was a “Shark Tank” guest in Season 3, then she became a regular in Season 4 and has stayed full-time ever since. Daymond John, Barbara Corcoran, Robert Herjavec and Kevin O’Leary all have been with the program from the beginning, and Kevin Harrington was a regular for the first two seasons. Since its second round, “Shark Tank” has made a habit of bringing in “guest sharks” for temporary stints. That slot has been filled by such notables as Jeff Foxworthy, Steve Tisch, Sara Blakely, Ashton Kutcher, Richard Branson, Bethenny Frankel, Maria Sharapova, Kevin Hart, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jason Blum. As for Cuban, who tellingly appeared as himself on Showtime’s “Billions” toward the end of its run, he has even more changes on the horizon. He recently agreed to sell a major stake in the Dallas Mavericks basketball franchise to the family of the late casino mogul Sheldon Adelson.

But I think fans of ‘Ted’ are going to be very happy with this show.” - “Ted” creator Seth MacFarlane

Diane Keaton experiences her own ‘Baby Boom’

BY JAY BOBBIN

Diane Keaton has been serviced well by the vast majority of her films, but “Baby Boom” ranks high among the ones that have suited her best. Being presented by Turner Classic Movies on Sunday, Jan. 14, the 1987 comedy casts her as J.C. Wiatt, a workaholic businesswoman who suddenly becomes the guardian of an infant relative. She’s certain she can balance her very active career with her new surrogate motherhood, but it doesn’t quite work out that way. Eventually forced to reinvent herself, J.C. moves out of fast-paced New York to relaxed and scenic Vermont — where she gets inspiration from her newly inherited child to develop a baby-food brand that she labels Country Baby. Then-married screenwriters Charles Shyer (the movie’s director as well) and Nancy Meyers give Keaton terrific material, and she’s backed by a marvelous cast that includes Sam Shepard, Sam Wanamaker, Harold Ramis, James Spader and Pat Hingle. Keaton reunited with Meyers on the 1991 remake of “Father of the Bride” (which TCM presents the same night) and “Something’s Gotta Give.”

playerprofile BY ROBERTO JOZEF Coco Gauff looks to carry last year’s momentum into Australian Open It’s the first Grand Slam tournament of the year as the season gets underway Down Under in Melbourne, Australia, kicking off with the 2024 Australian Open. It begins Sunday, Jan. 14, and runs through to Sunday, Jan. 28, with all the action from the tournament broadcast live on ESPN. The wait is finally over for tennis fans and players alike, with fan-favorites Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic headlining the tournament and looking to defend their rankings. But, some may argue that no one has more hype surrounding their name going into this season than rising superstar Coco Gauff. Last season saw the American-born player reaching new heights as Gauff won her first singles major of her career, winning the U.S. Open and defeating world No. 1-ranked Sabalenka, catapulting her to a career-high ranking of No. 3 in the world. Going into this season, expectations will naturally keep on rising. However, coming off a season that required perseverance, grit and determination, Gauff seemed more poised and better equipped than ever to handle all that’s expected to come in the tournament and the season. Having solidified herself at the top of the rankings, the 19-year-old reflected on some of the trials and tribulations of last season in an Instagram post. “I saw my darkest and brightest days of my life this year. I probably grew enough for 10 lifetimes between January and now lol. I usually don’t say this but I am learning to be nicer to myself haha (I get questioned all the time by family, press and y’all for not saying this) but yes I AM proud of myself,” Gauff wrote. “I am proud of the resilience showed. They really tried to count me out but it is all in God’s plan and His timing.” Hoping to carry over some of her momentum from last season, look for Coco Gauff to be in her best form as she looks to win her second singles major and first Grand Slam of the season at the 2024 Australian Open when it kicks off Sunday, Jan. 14, live on ESPN. Possible/from 2 Though the transition was not easy, Corbet made his disability his strength. His book, “Options: Spinal Cord Injury and the Future,” provided those with similar experiences a look at what was possible. It also provides the script for the film’s voiceover work. “He redefined what is possible,” Lester Butt, a Craig Hospital psychologist who was a friend of Corbet’s and worked with Kennison, said of Corbet in the film. Corbet, who died in 2004, also paved the way for athletes like Kennison. But until “Full Circle,” the dots between the two men hadn’t been connected. One of the biggest challenges of the process for Berman was to do both stories justice and to seamlessly weave them into one film. Kennison, he said, is a larger than life personality whose drive inspires people whether they have suffered a spinal cord injury or not. And though he dug into Corbet’s life for over a year, Berman said he was only scratching the surface of his impact. “It’s so easy to argue that the film is more successful for including both of their stories,” Berman said. “But to get there was quite a wild ride. There were, like I said, plenty of pretty bad versions where we weren’t quite figuring out how the stories could play off
