‘Mumblecusser’

For the Chronicle

Bozeman writer Allen Morris Jones’ debut poetry collection, “Mumblecusser,” somehow snuck under my radar when it was released last month. I have been waiting for this collection for years, given Jones’ ability to turn the everyday into some small epiphany in only a few lines, to elicit a laugh while touching the heart. When I last had a cubicle to call my own, Jones’ poem “Tiny Triumphs” had a place of honor — printed on office paper, cut out and tacked at eye level so I only had to glance to my right to take in the words. “It’s not only that I am here, / alive and loved,” Jones concluded the poem about an uneventful morning, “it’s that I am allowed, / for some reason, / to know it.” Jones and I last talked about five years ago, with the release of “Montana for Kids: The Story of Our State.” A novel, “Sweeney on the Rocks,” was published in the meantime. And “Mumblecusser” brings Jones to 7 or 8 books, “depending on how you count.” The book is available at Elk River Books in Livingston and Country Bookshelf in Bozeman. More JONES | 14

“Archer: Into the Cold” - Series Finale The hit, long-running animated spy comedy series, “Archer” takes on its finale mission in this super-sized series finale. Jon Benjamin) and the characters in his agency, as covert black ops and espionage take a back seat to zany personalities and relationships between secret agents and drones. MANDY MOORE 4

“Truck Night in America” - Season 1 Each episode of this reality series features five drivers in their customized trucks and jeeps going head to head in three challenges, each testing a different vehicle attribute: speed, strength and handling. Between each challenge competitors demonstrate their craftsmanship by re-engineering their trucks for the next round. Only one can win and take home the prize money and the title of “Truck Night Champion.”

“This Is Us” is a hard act to follow for any performer, but Mandy Moore is setting out on that path. The actress-singer earned wide acclaim for portrayal of Rebecca Pearson at various ages on the NBC drama, and she’s returning in her first major project since that show ended. Peacock debuts the second season of the podcast-inspired anthology “Dr. Death” Thursday, Dec. 21, telling a new story as Moore plays a reporter who becomes captivated by a surgeon (Edgar Ramirez) she’s investigating about his apparent miracle procedures. A related plot involves doctors in Europe who grapple with big questions about the surgeon. Jennifer Morrison (“Once Upon a Time”) directed the first four of the eight episodes. (In Canada, the drama begins Jan. 7 on Showcase.) While “This Is Us” called major attention to her acting during its 2016-22 run, Moore has been in that part of show business for some time. Initially known for her music career, she also used her voice to transition into movies by speaking the words of a bear cub in “Dr. Dolittle 2” (2001). Soon after that, she moved into performances in such young-adult tales as “The Princess Diaries” (2001), “A Walk to Remember” (2002), “How to Deal” (2003) and “Chasing Liberty” (2004). Subsequently, Moore showed her yen for trying different roles in films including “American Dreamz” (2006) and “License to Wed” (2007), and in guest parts on such series on “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scrubs” and (as herself) “Entourage.” However, she also had a Disney-generated audience, cultivated initially through “The Princess Diaries” (2001) and her voice role as Rapunzel in “Tangled” (2010), then continued through television spinoffs of the latter movie plus the animated series “Tron: Uprising” and “Sheriff Callie’s Wild West.”

“Maggie Moore(s)” A wonderfully twisted dark comedy, this film takes the audience on an unexpected journey through a seemingly ordinary small desert town. In the quirky locale of a seemingly ordinary small desert town, a bizarre series of events unfold as two women who share the same name are murdered just days apart. Police chief Jordan Sanders (Jon Hamm) is determined to solve the mystery of the murders while simultaneously grappling with the challenges of his tumultuous personal life.

Moore also has continued with her music, her most recent album being last year’s “In Real Life” (which she wrote with her husband, Taylor Goldsmith), but her new acting pursuits should be interesting to gauge – and first, she’ll help give continuing life to “Dr. Death.” Birthdate: April 10, 1984 Birthplace: Nashua, N.H. Current residence: Los Angeles, Calif. Marital status: Married to musician Taylor Goldsmith; they have two sons Other television credits include: “This Is Us,” “Family Guy” (voice only), “Drunk History,” “Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure” (voice only), “Sheriff Callie’s Wild West” (voice only), “Red Band Society,” “Christmas in Conway,” “High School USA!” (voice only), “Tron: Uprising” (voice only), “Grey’s Anatomy,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “The Simpsons” (voice only), “Scrubs,” “Entourage,” “Criss Angel Mindfreak,” “All That” Movie credits include: “Midway,” “Ralph Breaks the Internet” (voice only), “The Darkest Minds,” “47 Meters Down,” “Love, Wedding, Marriage,” “Tangled” (voice only), “Swinging With the Finkels,” “Southland Tales,” “Dedication,” “License to Wed,” “Because I Said So,” “Brother Bear 2” (voice only), “American Dreamz,” “Romance & Cigarettes,” “Racing Stripes” (voice only), “Saved!,” “Chasing Liberty,” “How to Deal,” “All I Want,” “A Walk to Remember,” “The Princess Diaries,” “Dr. Dolittle 2” (voice only) Education: Bishop Moore Catholic High School, Orlando, Fla.; Stagedoor Manor, Loch Sheldrake, N.Y. ‘The Sound of Music’ sounds again on ABC For many people at holiday time, “The Sound of Music” is indeed one of their favorite things. And why shouldn’t it be? Having endured for more than a half-century, and likely adding to its already vast fan base every time ABC televises it — which will happen again Sunday, Dec. 17 — veteran filmmaker Robert Wise’s splendid, Oscar-winning 1965 version of the Rodgers & Hammerstein stage staple remains a delightful experience for viewers of all ages, even when broken up by numerous ads meant to grab the attention of last-minute gift shoppers. Much credit for retaining the audience has to go to Julie Andrews, ideally cast as Maria, the spirited nun-in- Julie Andrews in training sent to serve as governess to the seven children “The Sound of Music” of the stern Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer, doing a fine job in the role, though he maintained for many years that he wasn’t as fond of the film as others are). Right from the classic opening sequence of Andrews crooning the title tune on an Austrian mountainside, she has you in her charming grasp. While such stalwarts as Eleanor Parker, Richard Haydn and Peggy Wood also are in the cast, the seven actors who play the von Trapp offspring also are essential to the movie’s success. Sadly, two — Charmian Carr and Heather Menzies (the latter becoming the wife of actor Robert Urich later) — have passed, but they’ll be remembered forever for what they did here. Among the others, so will Angela Cartwright, who had just started her “Lost in Space” television gig at the time. And Nicholas Hammond would grow up to be TV’s live-action “Spider-Man.” Set against the pre-World War II backdrop that the actual von Trapp family dealt with, prompting the stirring finale underscored by “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” (which sent more than few patrons out of theaters with tears rolling down their cheeks), “The Sound of Music” is undeniably old-fashioned. That’s not a bad thing, since that also keeps it timeless. FRIDAYTHURSDAY, DECEMBER 1521, 2023

Burl Ives OF RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER ON CBS/FREEFORM Q: When actors like Burl Ives and Fred Astaire narrated such holiday specials as “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town,” were their characters supposed to look like them? A: Most definitely, though the format also allowed creative liberties to be taken in the seasonal classics made by producers Arthur Rankin Jr, and Jules Bass. When you look at the character Sam the Snowman in “Rudolph” (being shown on CBS and Freeform this season) and you compare that to the actual image of Oscar-winning talent Ives, there’s little question that the character was modeled physically on that actor. That also owes to Ives’ performances of such songs as “A Holly Jolly Christmas” and “Silver and Gold” on the soundtrack, where the image certainly relates to the musical success Ives already had had by the time the special first aired in 1964. Similarly, the mailman who tells the story in the 1970 show “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town” (an annual ABC attraction lately) is meant to resemble iconic actor-singer-dancer Astaire, right down to his wiry physical build. Though Mickey Rooney voiced Santa in that program, Father Christmas has such a traditional look, the resulting image was sort of a hybrid of that and Rooney’s own appearance. Other examples of veteran talents whose likenesses were used for their animated counterparts in Rankin/Bass shows included Jimmy Durante in “Frosty the Snowman,” Shirley Booth in “The Year Without a Santa Claus,” Angela Lansbury in “The First Christmas: The Story of the First Christmas Snow,” Ethel Merman in “Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas in July” and Danny Kaye in the Easter-themed “Here Comes Peter Cottontail.”

Bing Crosby is ‘Going My Way’ again for the holidays

BY JAY BOBBIN

Turner Classic Movies will be packed with Christmas attractions in the week before the holiday, and one of the most beloved is “Going My Way,” the Leo McCarey-directed 1944 drama that earned Bing Crosby an Oscar for best actor. Being shown Tuesday, Dec. 19, the picture also won six other Academy Awards including best picture and best song (for “Swinging on a Star,” which became a standard in Crosby’s musical repertoire). Crosby plays Father Chuck O’Malley, a priest who joins a New York church and shakes things up with his unconventional ways, which especially concern the site’s senior pastor (Barry Fitzgerald, another Oscar winner here). Opera star Rise Stevens appears as … an opera star, a woman from Father Chuck’s pre-clergy past. Crosby proved so popular in his role, McCarey crafted another film for him in the part: the following year’s “The Bells of St. Mary’s,” which TCM appropriately will show right after “Going My Way.”

playerprofile BY ROBERTO JOZEF Rashford hoping to return to top form against arch-rivals Liverpool Another iconic English Premier League matchup takes to the pitch as football giant Liverpool gets set to host their rival, Manchester United. Kicking off Sunday, Dec. 17, at Anfield Stadium in Anfield, Liverpool, England, in what promises to be another historic showdown, full match coverage airs live on ESPN. In a season that’s been full of highs and lows, Liverpool currently commands a stronghold in the top half of the Premier League standings, while Manchester United continues to make its push to solidify a spot in the top 10. Historically, fixtures between these two clubs have always been full of drama, intensity and highlight-reel moments, with Liverpool coming out on top in a decisive 7-0 victory the last time they clashed. For the Red Devils, one individual who has been catching the spotlight is none other than 26-year-old Marcus Rashford. While the English native may be struggling in the first half of this season with only one goal in 11 appearances (as of press time), the chance of him remaining in less than stellar form for the remainder of the year would certainly be out of character — something Manchester United will be hoping can be the difference-maker against Liverpool. In Rashford’s best season to date, the 2022-23 campaign saw the forward racking up accomplishments. Last season, he notched 30 goals in all competition for United — a first for the team since Robin van Persie did so in 2013 — and continued to prove how his scoring can have a major impact. In addition to what was already an outstanding season, he capped it off by scoring a goal during the Carabao Cup final, leading his team to a 2-0 victory and helping United win its first trophy since 2017. Meanwhile, Liverpool has been firing on all cylinders, sitting at the top of the standings for most of the season and getting contributions from the likes of Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez, all sitting in the top 30 in Premier League scoring. Full name: Marcus Rashford Birthdate: Oct. 31, 1997 Birthplace: Manchester, England Height/weight: 5-11/150 pounds Team(s): Manchester United (2015-present), Fletcher Moss Rangers (2003-2005)

Jones/from 2 Releasing “Mumblecusser,” however, has been quite different from the rest. There’s something very personal about the collection of poetry, Jones tells me over lunch at the Bozeman Co-Op last week. “You’d expect at some point to be a bit blasé about it,” he said. “This one took me by surprise how much it means to me.” “Mumblecusser” is the culmination of 20 years of observations about the world around him, 20 years of growth and change taking Jones from a young man in his early 30s to a husband and father contemplating that passage of time. “It feels a little bit like a risk, expressing yourself,” he said. “In poetry in particular, for it to stand a chance of being any good at all, you have to take that risk.” The book is dedicated to son Corey and wife, Karen, who make frequent appearances in its poems. “If I’m writing to a particular person, subconsciously writing to my wife or kid, that informs the poetry in a way that wasn’t available to me before,” Jones said. Many of the poems were conceived as part of a possible collection dedicated solely to fatherhood. Jones was 40 when

In the titular poem “Mumblecusser,” for example, Jones’ son caught him swearing under his breath while on a hike and Jones started contemplating a poem about it on the ride home. “‘Dadda, did you just say the eff word?’ Abashed, caught, I suppose I did. I know I did,” Jones writes. Jones prefers his poetry to be entertaining and accessible. He wants those people who say they do not like nor understand the medium to find a soft landing of recognition in the verse “I personally am not drawn to those poems that are selfconsciously poetry, that are full of themselves,” Jones said. Mostly, the poems stray from set forms. Rhymes are internal, if there at all. Only one poem in “Mumblecusser” was “intentionally manufactured,” Jones said. He wrote the closing piece, “The Prince of Highway 200,” as the collection was already coming together. The poem follows the road across the state, a lengthier survey of the changes Jones has seen that spans the width of Montana. The poem wraps up a collection that comprises the best of decades of such observations for Jones. “I’ve written poetry my whole life,” Jones said. “Most of it hasn’t been very good.” “Mumblecusser,” however, is.
