High Country News: I really like that children speaking Lakota relay the story of White Buffalo Calf Woman. Can you tell me a little bit about your decision to include that? Richard Two Bulls: When we sat down and decided to tell this story, one of the biggest things for me was that I wanted to be able to highlight the story of the White Buffalo Calf Woman because it’s one of the very important stories related to buffalo. It teaches people who have

lost connection with the Creator to get back to virtues such as respect and generosity. I grew up with that story, and I’d never heard it told in Lakota by a young person. But I knew it could be done, because I’ve done a lot of reporting not only on Red Cloud, but on a variety of groups on multiple reservations that are trying to reintroduce the language and culture to the youth. That opening scene was the highlight of the documentary for me. It was a beautiful thing to see, especially because I’m a part of that generation that wasn’t able to learn Lakota. More BUFFALO | 14

“The Matrix Resurrections” (Dec. 10)

“Dragons: The Nine Realms” Season 8 (Dec. 14)

To find out if his reality is a physical or mental construct, Thomas Anderson, aka Neo (Keanu Reeves), will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. If he’s learned anything, it’s that choice, while an illusion, is still the only way out of — or into — the Matrix. Neo already knows what he has to do, but what he doesn’t yet know is that the Matrix is stronger, more secure and far more dangerous than ever before. Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris and Jessica Henwick.

With the dangerous World Serpent Jörmungandr on the loose, Tom (Jeremy Shada) and the Dragon Riders must devise a strategy to protect the realms from the formidable dragon. However, Sledkin (Carrie Keranen) throws a wrench in their plans when she steals Plowhorn from the Riders in relentless pursuit of the Gods Realm and the Dragonsite gem. Faced with the biggest challenge they’ve ever encountered, the team must recruit an army of dragons to fend off Jörmungandr and save the Hidden World.

“Swamp People” - Season 14 (Dec. 14) As nature exerts its power across all of America and the globe, the swampers of Louisiana face a brand-new challenge. Some five hundred prime gator tags are at stake for next season—but to get them, gator hunters must compete now! It’s renewal time for tags in Louisiana, which are usually granted in five- or ten-year deals. And this year, the large landowners who hold the tags, have made all too clear they’re only willing to work with hunters who land the biggest beasts this year.

If a celebration of hip-hop music is planned, LLCool J is one of the most logical and essential performers who could be included. Indeed, he does appear on “A Grammy Salute to 50 Years of HipHop,” a special debuting Sunday, Dec. 10, on CBS and Paramount+. He’s also an executive producer of the two-hour program that commemorates a half-century of the title music form, and the scheduled cast is packed with artists who have contributed significantly to that history. Among them: Big Daddy Kane, Arrested Development, Black Thought, Bun B, Common, Cypress Hill, De La Soul, Jermaine Dupri, J.J. Fad, Jeezy, Talib Kweli, The Lady of Rage, MC Lyte, MC Sha-Rock, Monie Love, The Pharcyde, Queen Latifah, Questlove, Rakim, Remy Ma, 2 Chainz, Uncle Luke, Warren G and Yo-Yo. Also known as an actor — especially for the long run he concluded earlier this year on the CBS series “NCIS: Los Angeles” as Sam Hanna, a role he’s slated to continue in the next season of “NCIS: Hawai’i” — LL Cool J has been one of the network’s go-to personalities to host or perform (or both) in variety specials in recent years. He’s also received some of his biggest accolades in such shows, particularly The Kennedy Center Honors, of which he was a recipient in 2017. Another relatively recent honor was his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which came in 2021. Born James Todd Smith, LL Cool J will mark the 40th anniversary of his music career in 2024, dating back to the release of his single “I Need a Beat” (and his debut album “Radio” the following year). He has earned two Grammys in a career that he began by rapping at age 10, then advanced by creating demos of his work and sending them to music labels — with the then-new Def Jam signing him to a deal and making him one of the principal talents on which it built its reputation.

“The Retirement Plan” (Dec. 15) Caught up in a criminal enterprise that puts their lives at risk, Ashley (Ashley Greene) and her young daughter Sarah (Thalia Campbell) turn to the only person who can help — Ashley’s estranged father Matt (Nicolas Cage), currently living the life of a retired beach bum in the Cayman Islands. Soon tracked down on the island by crime boss Donnie (Jackie Earle Haley) and his lieutenant Bobo (Ron Perlman), Ashley, Sarah and Matt become entangled in an increasingly dangerous web, while Ashley quickly learns her father had a secret past that she knew nothing about.

It’s no surprise, then, that LL Cool J will be one of the major players as hip-hop has a televised party to fete its 50-year mark. Birthdate: Jan. 14, 1968 Birthplace: Bay Shore, Islip, N.Y. “Network” remains relevant nearly 50 years later When it was released in 1976, “Network” Peter Finch in “Network” largely was considered a satire. Now, that’s not so much the case. Writer Paddy Chayefsky and director Sidney Lumet’s searing, Oscar-winning look at the media — being presented Wednesday, Dec. 13, by Turner Classic Movies to lead off the conclusion of a two-part tribute to Chayefsky — has proven over time to be a remarkable forecast of developments in the television industry, most notably the lessening of the line between news and entertainment. The story’s main symbol of that is Howard Beale, the deeply depressed chief anchorman of the fictional UBS network. Brilliantly portrayed by Peter Finch in a performance that was honored with a posthumous Academy Award, Beale declares that he’s going to commit suicide on the air ... prompting his bosses to remove him, until the ratings for his newscast show an immediate and enormous spike. Close friend and news director Max Schumacher (William Holden, also superb) resists exploiting Beale. However, statistics-obsessed, desperate-for-a-hit UBS entertainment chief Diana Christensen (Faye Dunaway, another Oscar winner here) inserts herself into the process and takes over the news program, supported by soulless conglomerate deputy Frank Hackett (Robert Duvall, perfect in the part). What had been a straightforward newscast is turned into a broadcast sideshow of sorts, with Beale positioned as “The Mad Prophet of the Airwaves,” backed by such added attractions as “Sybil the Soothsayer.” Though the show stumbles initially, it eventually finds its groove as Beale beseeches his audience to take action against the wrongs in society ... never more so than through his legendary mantra, “I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!” FRIDAYTHURSDAY, DECEMBER 814, 2023

David Duchovny OF THE X-FILES ON COMET Q: It’s been interesting to see David Duchovny back in the public eye for the movie he made with Meg Ryan. How long was he on “The X-Files”? A: The actor’s run as FBI Agent Fox Mulder began in 1993, and he has said that he didn’t expect the Fox series (now repeating on Comet) to last as long as it did, nor to be as popular as it became. His regular weekly run on the show went through the seventh season, when headlines were made by a lawsuit Duchovny filed against 20th Century Fox Television, alleging that it sold rights to repeats of the show to Fox-affiliated stations for less than they were worth … thus costing him some profits. The suit was settled, but Duchovny’s contract for the show was up, so he left as a full-time cast member (with Robert Patrick assuming the role of a Mulder surrogate, John Doggett). However, Duchovny returned for part of the eighth season, with the explanation that Mulder had been abducted by aliens. He also came back for the presumed series finale in Season 9, but as it turned out, he wasn’t done with the show yet. Fox gave “The X-Files” revivals as a limited-run program in 2016 and 2018, which were deemed to be the 10th and 11th seasons of the show. Series creator-producer Chris Carter has inferred that there are more stories in that universe to be told, but any discussions of a continuation of the franchise haven’t come to fruition. The show also yielded two theatrical films in which Duchovny played Mulder (opposite Gillian Anderson’s Agent Dana Scully), “The X-Files: Fight the Future” (1998) and “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” (2008).

“It’s Monk present day after however long we’ve been away from him, 13 years now, going on 14 years. ... I’m really excited about revisiting it because when we ended it, it really felt like that was going to be it. But to have this opportunity to to see where we all are [is special]. All of the characters have gone through some changes in those years.” - Tony Shalhoub, star of “Monk,” explains to Entertainment Weekly what it’s like to return to the role of the eccentric detective Adrian Monk in the upcoming Peacock movie.

In the original drafts of the script, I definitely pushed things a lot farther than they were in the film, and President Obama, having the experience he does have, was able to ground me a little bit on how things might unfold in reality. ... I am writing what I think is fiction, for the most part, I’m trying to keep it as true to life as possible, but I’m exaggerating and dramatizing. And to hear an ex-president say you’re off by a few details … I thought I was off by a lot! The fact that he said that scared the f*** out of me.” - In an interview with Vanity Fair, Sam Esmail, director of Netflix’s “Leave the World Behind,” discusses how former president and executive producer Barack Obama helped with the adaptation. 8

A certain bunch celebrates “A Very Brady Christmas”

BY JAY BOBBIN

Of all the projects that have reunited the casts of classic television series, “A Very Brady Christmas” is one of the most beloved, accounting for the annual runs that MeTV has been giving it in recent years. It appears there again on Sunday, Dec. 10, as Mike and Carol (again played by Robert Reed and Florence Henderson) decide to reunite their entire “Brady Bunch” for the holidays. Each of the grown children has his or her own dilemma, though … ranging from Marcia’s (Maureen McCormick) concern over her husband Wally’s (Jerry Houser) sudden job loss, to Bobby’s (Mike Lookinland) secret about his chosen profession. The enjoyable 1988 film also brings back Barry Willliams as Greg, Eve Plumb as Jan, Christopher Knight as Peter and Ann B. Davis as housekeeper Alice. However, there’s a different Cindy, with Susan Olsen (who was on her honeymoon at the time of the filming) replaced by Jennifer Runyon.

playerprofile BY ROBERTO JOZEF LeBron James, Lakers head to Dallas to face the surging Mavs

The energy is high for another exciting night in the NBA as LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers gear up to tip off against a talented Dallas Mavericks squad Tuesday, Dec. 12, at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, with the game broadcast live on TNT. At 38 years of age, NBA legend LeBron James continues to defy expectations. Regarded as one of the top two best players of all time, the 2023-24 season has been another amazing one for King James, proving to doubters yet again that he is still a force to be reckoned with and is showing no signs of slowing down. This season, James boasts an impressive 24.3 points per game, 8.5 rebounds per game and 5.5 assists per game, while shooting for an impressive 56.7% from field goal range. But make no mistake, the matchup against the Mavericks will surely prove to be a challenging one. Led by Slovenian-born all-star Luka Doncic, the Mavericks started the season on a four-game win streak with Doncic averaging 31.1 points per game, 7.8 rebounds and 7.9 assists (as of Nov. 15). As far as team performance goes, the Lakers rank 28th in three-point percentage and 29th in three-pointers made through 10 games this season. While some of their off-season signings have been ruled out due to injury, overall the Lakers will need to look for other ways to find effective scoring from beyond the arch. Meanwhile, for the Mavericks, perimeter shooting has been their strongest area this season, as they lead the league in three-point percentage, sitting at 39.4%, all while sitting in a top-three spot in the Western Conference. So, grab your popcorn and get ready to witness greatness as the Los Angeles Lakers visit the Dallas Mavericks for a Western Conference matchup, airing live on TNT Tuesday, Dec. 12. what all of that means. When we heard about the Burns documentary, we said, “Oh, why don’t we do something that’s really localized to the buffalo here within the state and the nearby regions,” because we knew the Burns documentary was going to be very grand-scale. There are something like 80-plus tribes with buffalo in the United States; he can cover that, while we can show people what it’s like here in our state. We can show what these schools and nonprofits are doing to regenerate these traditions and pass them on to future generations. There are just so many narratives, and there’s no definition of what storytelling is — as long as you’re passing on what you learned from your elders, your parents and the culture and being able to find your experience and paint it, draw it, write it, it’s storytelling.
