Letter from our

Leadership Thank you for your support during this first year as a unified organization. A year ago, our Board of Directors had a bold vision: creating one unified Boys & Girls Club organization to serve kids throughout the Salt Lake Valley. Your passion and dedication have allowed this

Donors, supporters, and community

united organization to reach new milestones.

members like you have brought

Because of you, more teens are going to college,

this vision to life.

more kids are eating healthy, and more youth have a safe place to go after school.

In the following pages, you’ll find some of the brightest moments from the past year. Please take heart knowing that none of them would have been possible without you. Warm regards,

LeAnn Saldivar President & CEO 1

Good Character

You’re Making Dreams Come True. Thanks to you, “Big Mo” looks destined for success. Mohamed came to the U.S. when he was just 4 years old, a refugee from a war-torn country. Being thrown into a new culture with a new language was tough, but Mohamed didn’t let that stop him. He found his local Boys & Girls Club. Boys & Girls Club programs, funded by donors like you, helped Mohamed thrive. “The Club motivates me to do big things,” says Mohamed. “It gave me the courage to take Honors and AP classes. Having the Club on my side helped me get through those hard courses and pass them. The Club showed me that anything is possible.” Your support has put Mohamed on the path to a great future. In February Big Mo became Utah’s 2016 Youth of the Year. He received a scholarship, and was honored by Utah Gov. Gary Herbert. In July, he represented Utah at Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Pacific Region Youth of the Year competition. This fall, Mohamed is using his Youth of the Year scholarship to attend Utah State University and work toward his dream of becoming a CEO. You made Big Mo’s big moment possible. Boys & Girls Clubs depend on you to provide life changing opportunities and scholarships for exceptional youth like Mohamed.

Adacemic Success

You’re Transforming Lives. Without you, Anthony may have never discovered his potential. “The Boys & Girls Club is my second home,” says Anthony, who has attended the Murray Club for twelve years. Anthony suffers from epilepsy and once had a seizure at the Club. That’s when he knew the staff were like family. “The staff came to my aid quickly, “Anthony recalls, “After I left the hospital, I received a whole box of letters from my Club brothers and sisters wishing me well and a fast recovery.” As a result of his epilepsy, Anthony was placed in special education classes. By 2nd grade, he felt like his school had given up on him. However, he recalls how “the Club encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone and learn new things, including math and science far beyond my second grade studies.” As a result, Anthony discovered his gift for technology allowed him to connect to others in ways he never imagined. With limited access to technology at home, Anthony relied on resources at the Club to further explore math, science, and his digital world. According to Anthony, the Club staff “taught me that school can get me far. They let me know that it is OK to show people that you are better than the limits they put on you.”

4

Anthony graduated in May and earned a Presidential Leadership Scholarship covering his first two years of college. Still fascinated by math, science and technology, he is pursuing a degree in Computer Science. It is because of supporters like you that Anthony has been able to reach this potential.

You’re Providing Hope and Opportunity. You’ve given Nicki a place to be herself. Nicki, age 9, has attended the Lied Boys & Girls Club for three years. She is one of five kids being raised by a single grandmother. Her family relies on the Club for homework help, healthy snacks, and a safe place to go after school. When Nicki first came to the Club, turmoil in her family had left her with some challenging behavior. She struggled in school, and went back and forth from being nearly non-verbal, to acting aggressively at school and at the Club. Fortunately, the Club provided Nicki a unique place to work through this behavior: the basketball court. On the Boys & Girls Clubs court, Nicki has found a place where she can be successful. As the smallest girl on a court full of boys, she doesn’t have to worry about being too aggressive, and she never backs down. Nicki transforms into a leader on the court, insisting on using the full-height hoop even when staff offer to lower it. When asked how playing sports at the Club makes her feel, Nicki responded “It makes me feel good,” a response that staff say is a major development. Through the Boys & Girls Club, Nicki has gained self-confidence, a voice, and a new goal: becoming a professional basketball player.
