Area Magazine & COMMUNITY GUIDE

Prouder Than Ever of Brunswick People expect mayors to be proud of their cities, and I definitely am proud. Our regional profile continues expanding, but without sacrificing our small-town feel. Many of our businesses have defied the economic downturn and continue to grow. Our best known attraction, Mapleside Farms, continues diversifying the region’s family-oriented recreational and arts activities. Our healthcare sector is stronger than ever, and higher education opportunities in town are multiplying. Brunswick is a very dynamic place to live. So why would I be “prouder than ever” of my home town? As always, it is because of the quality of our residents. Tragically, four of our high school’s students died in a car accident earlier this year, and we all felt the loss. But the community outpouring of compassion, generosity, tributes, and the countless acts of remembrance were completely overwhelming. They came from every quarter, and from none more profoundly than from our high school students. The experience left an indelible impression on me. We all want to live somewhere with people who respect our privacy but who reach out to us when the moment calls for it. I have come to appreciate more deeply that Brunswick is such a place. I am surrounded by people who care about being good citizens and good neighbors. And I have never been more proud to be a public servant here. Come visit Brunswick and see for yourself! Mayor Gary F. What Keeps Brunswick Thriving? By Mayor Gary Werner

It is no secret why residents and businesses are attracted to the City of Brunswick.

Small Enterprises (COSE). Both help local businesses start and grow. Assistance is also available from the City’s office of Economic Development.

Location, Location, Location.

Brunswick’s Living Environment

Brunswick, Medina County’s largest city, is ideally located. It is roughly as far from Cleveland as it is from Akron. Interstate 71 runs through Brunswick, linking it to the nearby Ohio Turnpike and other area freeways. Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is just 20 minutes away. Brunswick’s regional accessibility and reputation for safe, family-oriented community living helped earn it Family Circle Magazine’s recognition as one of the Ten Best Towns for Families. But Brunswick has also been designated a “business friendly community” in northeast Ohio. An active Brunswick Area Chamber of Commerce shares offices with the Council of

Brunswick has many excellent family and community amenities. The State of Ohio consistently rates the Brunswick City School District “Excellent with Distinction,” the highest rating. The Brunswick University Center, operated by Cuyahoga Community College and three area university partners, and Brunswick’s Midpoint Campus, operated by the University of Akron and Lorain County Community College, continue expanding local higher education opportunities. Brunswick is home to the Cleveland Clinic, Southwest General Health Care Center and Emergency Room, and Medina

General Hospital. These, and the Digestive Disease Consultants, all provide world-class medical service to our residents. Brunswick also partners in the construction of a new $14 million county-wide fiber optic ring that the Medina Port Authority is building. The ring will bring competitively-priced ultra-high speed broadband throughout the City’s Business Park and commercial corridors. And Brunswick’s park system comprises 20 variously-sized park sites for a total of 335 acres, including the Brunswick Lake Park, the City’s most prominent natural feature.

The City’s Staff Many well-qualified public servants work in the City offices. The City Council Clerk, who doubles as the Mayor’s Secretary, provides the public interface for all legislative and Mayoral activities. Brunswick’s Office of Administrative Services manages and coordinates City employee health insurance and benefits, recruitment, testing, hiring of staff, and assists in the public bidding process. Brunswick’s Division of Engineering oversees, among other

things, the City’s roadways, storm water drainage, and traffic flow, and the design and construction of new residential and commercial developments. Brunswick’s Service Department cares for the City’s infrastructure, including street maintenance, snow and ice control, and the City’s above and below ground storm sewer system. They also oversee the City’s refuse service, public transportation system (i.e., Brunswick Transit Alternative), and the branch chipping, leaf collection, and street sweeping programs. Brunswick is especially lucky to have its Division of Information and Public Communications operate the City’s own

Brunswick Area Television studio, located at 4274 Manhattan Avenue. The studio offers free equipment loans and training for community members to produce their own public access television programs, which can all be viewed on demand at bat.pegcentral.com. BAT also promotes community activities by its operation of the community website www.brunswick.oh.us, public bulletin board, and through a variety of print communications.

Keeping Brunswick Safe Finally, Brunswick residents are kept safe by the able professionals in the City’s Division of Fire and Division of Police. The Fire Department also provides safety inspections for Brunswick businesses, and runs an Adopt-A-Hydrant program, by which community members help clean, paint, and maintain the City’s hydrant stock. Brunswick’s Police Department includes the Division of Police Communication Center, which provides the City’s full-time police, fire, animal control, and emergency medical dispatching and call taking services, including dispatch work for neighboring Brunswick Hills and Hinckley Townships. At least two communication specialists staff our center 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.

The city welcomes Quality Collision, a new business on Pearl Road.

A Great Place for Business There are many definitions of Economic Development. Most involve working to retain the businesses you have, workforce development, attracting new businesses to the area, and creating an environment for entrepreneurs to thrive. Brunswick has been working on all fronts. We host periodic meetings for existing businesses, giving support to our current economic base. Recent meetings included seminars on website design, attracting customers with the new social media. We also have an economic newsletter, a TV show called “Open for Business” and a new listing on the Economic Website called “Tools for Business Success” which lists 600 links to ideas that can help business owners or new entrepreneurs build their businesses. The City has also helped spearhead a $14 million countywide effort to bring ultra-high speed broadband to the industrial parks, and to the Center Road/Pearl Road corridor. This effort supports current businesses with a more robust redundant broadband service at a lower cost and makes it easier to attract future high tech business. Working with local citizens in an organization called the IDEA Group (Improving and Developing Economic Activity) we are constantly listening to you and researching ways to move Brunswick forward.

Charles Pfister, D.D.S., M.S. CREATING SMILES FOR OVER 30 YEARS

r. Charles Pfister, a lifetime native of Medina County, has been creating smiles in Medina as a board certified orthodontist for 30 years and feels one of his most important duties is listening to each patient to determine his or her goals for seeking treatment. A member of many local, state and national dental orthodontic organizations, Dr. Pfister is also a fellow member of the honorary International College of Dentists. Dr. Pfister was the first Medina County dentist to earn the Ohio Dental Association 2010 Achievement Award. Dr. Pfister’s training in growth and development at Case Western Reserve University and The University of Michigan has earned his office an excellent reputation for correcting early skeletal problems in young patients. It’s satisfying to prevent the need for more dramatic action later on as well as restoring a young child’s self esteem during these difficult development years. Today, patients have more options with teeth straightening such as mini metal brackets, cosmetic brackets and Invisalign. The most

complex skeletal cases involve orthodontics and jaw surgery. Dr. Pfister and his wife Terri reside in Medina staying very busy raising their sons, Stephen and Trenton, as well as staying very involved in the community. Since 1955, Dr. Pfister has been a member of the Brunswick Methodist Church where the fellowship hall was named after his father, a founding member. Dr. Pfister feels that “Working with today’s youth and helping them discover their talents is our best formula for guaranteeing their success as adults.” Dr. Charles Pfister

Dr. Pfister’s office is located at 698 E. Washington St., Medina. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 330-725-4220 or visit www.pfisterorthodontics.com w w w. b r u n s w i c k . o h . u s

Esbi International Salon The Beauty of You Nuccio and Cheryl Basilisco own and operate Esbi International Salon, one of the area’s hottest beauty spots for personalized on-trend styles and color. A native of Italy, Nuccio exemplifies America as the “Land of Dreams” and describes his recent achievement of his own dreams.

Each day, Cheryl and I reflect on our many blessings. We are blessed with two healthy and wonderful children, a life of contentment, and a successful business that has been made possible by so many loyal customers. We believe that we truly are blessed to live in the world’s greatest country, where dreams do come true. Owning our own salon is a dream that came true for Cheryl and I, and we live each day in the spirit of gratitude grateful for where we’ve been and how far we’ve come. Our salon strives to provide the best possible service while remaining affordable by offering different levels

of stylists for each person’s individual needs. We have had outstanding success and support from the clients who have remained loyal to us from our simple salon in North Royalton, to our beautiful location in Strongsville, and now to the magnificent building we call home in Brunswick. Recently, a vision my wife and I shared has become a reality with the launch of our own exclusive hair care line, DIVINITÉ. We chose the name as a testament to our faith in God and a way to represent a positive product that counterbalances the degrading images and messages sent by many products on the market today. As Cheryl and I attended beauty shows over the last 15 years, we’ve noticed that so many products are increasingly marketed in ways that promote promiscuity and a bad self-image. We wanted to go in the opposite direction that makes us proud to hand our products to all different types of consumers. I knew that working on a product line that puts God first wasn’t going to be easy in today’s times, but I also knew with all of my heart and soul that this is what I was meant to do. The road was long, curvy, and full of bumps, but just when I thought of quitting, my good Lord was there to reassure me and pick me back up. I’ve learned so much through this experience. Sometimes He asks the impossible

out of us so He can show that all is possible through Him and His love. DIVINITÉ is a “Product with a purpose”, and each bottle is inscribed with a bible verse that relates to what the product is designed to achieve. Our goal is to offer an excellent product that makes the client feel as confident and beautiful as they appear. I worked for two years with chemists at Greenblendz to formulate and develop the perfect recipe. DIVINITÉ products are 100 percent natural and sulfate and paraben free, so they are not only healthy for your hair, but for you as well. Each product is designed to protect hair from heat, chemical services, and the environment while protecting its color and resulting in a silky, smooth finish. DIVINITÉ is beneficial to our clients and the environment, but we didn’t stop there, we also support The Wounded Warrior Foundation and plan on adding more organizations as we expand. We are working now to distribute the DIVINITÉ line across America, but you can get it right in Brunswick at Esbi International Salon.

Mellion Orthodontics “GENERATIONS OF SMILES” not uncommon to find one of the doctors at a school, sporting, or community event supporting their patients. A blend of experience and knowledge, with the invigoration of a fresh perspective on leading edge advancements in the field of orthodontics sets Mellion Orthodontics apart. It takes special training to become an orthodontist. In addition to receiving a dental degree, at least two years of continuous advanced study in orthodontics is required by the American Dental Association. As orthodontic specialists, Drs. Joe, Nick, Zach, and Nate Mellion demonstrate the continued pursuit of proficiency and excellence in dealing with complex treatment. “Orthodontics is not part of what we do – it is all that we do,” shares Drs. Nick and Nate.

T

he family orthodontic practice of Drs. Joseph, Nicholas, Zachary, and Nathan Mellion takes great pride in the family atmosphere that they have created over the past 30 years. “We strive to make all of our patients feel comfortable and we’re humbled by the trust that our patients have placed in us as we have treated generations of families through the years,” says Dr. Joe. Ask any of the doctors what they love most about practicing orthodontics and you will get a similar response, “We love our patients!” Truly knowing each individual is something each doctor strives to achieve while making a positive impact. It’s

“We feel that our practice provides a unique service with four orthodontists, especially as a family,” reveals Dr. Zach. “We complement each other well and can solve many complex issues with a blend of experience and modern techniques.” Four times the expertise and four times the service is what patients will receive from Mellion Orthodontics. A Message from the Superintendent Brunswick residents have come to expect academic

excellence from our schools. As Superintendent, I can say that our administrators and teachers share those expectations. As we move into the 2012-2013 school year, we continue to offer courses, instruction, technology and resources that enable each and every student to reach their full potential. When this year’s graduates leave Brunswick High School, they will be prepared for the next phase of their lives, be that college, the military or the workforce. We remain vigilant in our efforts to responsibly manage the public funds entrusted to us by the community. State aide to our district has continually diminished over the years, but through systematic reductions and wise investments, we’ve maintained high-quality, cost-effective education. We’ve staved off substantive cuts to student programs or services through

reorganization and administrative hitting all the right keys: Brunswick students are very reductions that saved the district adept at the newest technology. millions of dollars. Our energy program at the high school has reduced costs, increased efficiency and created a more hospitable learning environment. Our upgraded athletic facilities have become valuable community assets that not only benefit our students, but also provide local restaurants, hotels and retailers a new wave of tourism dollars. This school year, we will continue to pursue new ways to communicate and connect with the greater Brunswick community. In an effort to be more accessible and responsive, we’ve begun to use social media. These tools will allow us to inform residents about important school news as well as

Building a Bright Future at Midpoint Campus Center A few years ago, Dee Ann Powell of Brunswick was down on her luck and worrying about how she would provide for her daughter. Today, she’s on the road to a bright and promising future. In December, Powell will earn an associate’s degree in Respiratory Technology through Lorain County Community College’s University Partnership. With no job and hiring freezes everywhere she looked, Powell wasn’t sure what to do. That’s when a friend introduced her to the Midpoint Campus Center in Brunswick. However, enrolling in college was not what Powell had in mind for herself. “I gave them all my reasons about why I could not be a college student,” Powell said. “They had an answer to each one of my excuses and before I knew it, I… was registering for courses.” Powell took courses at Midpoint Campus Center where she excelled and was named to the Dean’s List each semester. She then enrolled in the Respiratory Care Program through LCCC’s University Partnership. “Midpoint Campus Center was the right start for me. From the wonderful, caring staff to the state-of-the-art classrooms, to the endless opportunities, it was the best choice for me,” Powell said. For more information on LCCC programs available at Midpoint Campus Center, visit www.midpointcampus.com.

Senior Living

Area Magazine & COMMUNITY GUIDE

Strongsville’s Premier Senior Living Community “Where the Best of Yesterday Can Be Yours Today”

Tips to Avoid Falls Falls are a real concern for older adults. One out of

three adults over 65 fall each year. Fall risk increases with age and is greater with women than men. These falls can cause serious injuries such as a broken hip and possibly lead to death. Fall injuries can also reduce ones independence and could possibly lead to nursing home placement. Low blood pressure, hearing and vision loss, medication usage, inactivity, poor nutrition and diseases such as osteoporosis increase the risk of falling.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Here are some tips to avoid falls. Exercise - Regularly (every other day for about 15 minutes) perform moderate physical activity to increase muscle strength, flexibility and balance. Wear proper fitting clothing and nonskid shoes.

A Continuum Care Retirement Community offering: *Short-Term Rehabilitation With State-of-the-Art Therapy *Independent & Assisted Living *24-hour Skilled Nursing *Memory Support Units *Hospice & Palliative Care Providing Care to Seniors Since 1892

Practice home safety - Eliminate obvious hazards like rugs, clutter and poor lighting. Add safety modifications such as nonslip mats, grab bars, night lights and sturdy handrails. Keep commonly used items within easy reach. Make sure you count to twenty after rising from a chair or bed before you start walking. Plan ahead. Remember good nutrition - Eat at least three well-balanced meals with foods high in calcium like milk, yogurt, cheese, fish and broccoli. Don’t let pills cause your spills - Have your physician or pharmacist conduct a “brown bag” review of your medications to ensure the medications are all compatible. During this review, discuss possible medication side effects. Remember to include all prescription and over-the-counter medications. Communicate with you doctor - Write down your questions ahead of your appointment or take someone with you. Your doctor may recommend an outpatient physical or occupational therapy for a home safety program. Have peace of mind - In the event a fall may occur, a Medical Alert System may reduce the seriousness of your injury. These alert systems can be as easy as pushing a pendant or watch to notify a health expert of your falling incident and they will notify your family and/or 911 if necessary. Response time is critical. For more information on the prevention of falls, please visit Willowood Care Center of Brunswick at 1186 Hadcock Road. Phone: 330-225-3156 and ask For Deb Lougheed, Administrator. Email: dlougheed@willowood-care.com and our website is www.Willowood-care.com. w w w. b r u n s w i c k . o h . u s
