Seeing it All in a Small Town By Ken McEntee

Set to John Mellencamp’s classic anthem, “Small Town,” a new YouTube video recently commissioned by Main Street Amherst says it all about the city. (see www.youtube.com Main Street Amherst Lip Dub Video) The 12-minute promotional spot features lip dubbing local residents on a rolling tour through Amherst’s charming Downtown area. “The small town flavor is what Amherst is about,” emphasizes Mayor David Taylor. “We’re small enough that everybody in town knows one another, yet we offer every modern amenity you can think of. Along with our old-time Main Street area we have modern retail and service areas along Route 58 and Cooper Foster Park Road. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for here, we’re just a short drive to the many shopping centers in surrounding cities.” Amherst, the mayor says, is the quintessential small town with something for everybody. “Our easy access to anywhere via the Ohio Turnpike and Routes 2 and 58 makes Amherst very convenient for residents and businesses,” Taylor says. “Our city employees do a wonderful job 3

of delivering excellent services to our citizens. We have top rated schools, a library, a lot of open park space and a swimming pool. And we’re a very safe community, which makes Amherst an ideal place to raise a family.” The town boasts a diversity of home styles at affordable prices, says Liz Concar, sales manager with Howard Hanna Realty Services. >> Continued on page 4 w w w. City Overview

“Amherst is just outside the major metropolitan areas, which is perfect for families that like the small town atmosphere while having a lot of conveniences close by,” Concar says. Amherst’s historic Town Hall exemplifies the city’s commitment to maintaining its heritage. Now a town of more than 12,000 residents, Amherst achieved acclaim as the “Sandstone Center of the World.” The town literally was settled on layers of sandstone that formed over billions of years. Widespread demand for that sandstone brought the railroad to Amherst, along with numerous immigrants – mainly German and Swiss – who came looking for work. Today, people come to Amherst to seek a safe, quiet community in which to raise their families. “Many people move here because of our schools,” Taylor says. “There is a lot of school pride in Amherst, and the city government has a very good relationship with the schools. We all work together to make the city what it is.” Youth activities, including sports, are abundant in Amherst. “Our baseball program, which is run by the Amherst Athletic Association, is second to none,” the mayor says. “We also have excellent soccer and football programs that are coordinated by the Amherst Youth Soccer Association and the Amherst Youth Football Association, along with other sports.” Amherst has plenty of park space that invites people of all ages to participate in physical activities, or just enjoy the fresh outdoor air. Overseen by the city’s Park Commission, the four municipal parks include the Maude Neiding Park, which features the Anna Schmauch Memorial Pool. The park, located off Cleveland Avenue has a large playground for children and four picnic shelters that can be reserved for picnics and special events.

The adjacent DePaola and Jaworski Parks, off Cooper Foster Park Road, are favorite venues for soccer games. Veterans Park, at the corner of Tenney Avenue and Church Street, honors the memory and deeds of Amherst men and women who have served in the armed forces. In addition to the city parks, the Lorain County Metro Park Beaver Creek Reservation also is located in Amherst. The park features 65 acres of mature woodlands and floodplains, a 1.2-mile paved trail, athletic and play areas and a visitor's center. Evening entertainment is also abundant in Amherst. That may never be more evident than during the annual Dancing on Main Street celebration, a Downtown music and food festival organized every August by Main Street Amherst. The event pairs the sounds of local bands with the aromas of hot, appetizing fare from some of the area’s favorite eateries. Many of them set up outdoor tables and offer food and drink specials during the popular event. Dancing on Main Street, says Teresa Gilles, executive director of Main Street Amherst, is always one of the highlights of the year. “It brings the community together to our historical Downtown district,” she says. “A vibrant Downtown is important to Amherst’s home town feel. We are all about community. People want a place

to call home and our Downtown activities tie it all together.” The mission of Main Street Amherst is to promote the city and its business community, while helping to draw businesses into the city. That mission was the impetus behind production of the promotional YouTube video viewable at www.mainstreetamherst. org. The video, Gilles says, reveals that “Amherst is a wonderful place to live, work and play.” Bob Fisher, owner of Premier Toyota Scion agrees. “Amherst is just such a nice town to do business in,” Fisher says. “This is a town of good folks who care about their community. The mayor and City Council are very favorable to business and town >> Continued on page 6

folk are very supportive of local business.” Main Street Amherst’s efforts to spruce up some of the city’s Downtown structures have been aided through a recently procured $240,000 Community Development Block Grant from the state of Ohio. The grant, Gilles says, will be used to improve four Downtown buildings: Cedar Pub; the Reddington Block Building; Old Town Pizza; and Main Street Marketplace. Renovation of the Reddington Block Building and Main Street Marketplace, she said, will help to draw new businesses Downtown. Outside its retail zones, Amherst’s industrial sector is anchored by companies like Nordson Corp., Pierre Foods and KTM North America. “We don’t have a lot of heavy industry in Amherst, but the companies we have here provide a consistent level of tax income that helps to keep the city government running,” Taylor explains. The mayor says he is proud of the level of service the city government provides to its residents. “Through the weak economy, we have been able to avoid layoffs because we have always run lean and mean,” he says. “We have a small group of only about 25 service workers, but they do a lot of work and they get a lot accomplished.” Taylor says he can’t imagine living anywhere besides Amherst. “I’ve been here all my life, except when I went away to college,” he says. “This is my hometown and I am very proud of it.”

Amherst COMMUNITY GUIDE

Come Help Us Grow! The Main Street Program Helps to Preserve Amherst’s Heritage In an effort to preserve Amherst’s heritage, the city was

pleased to receive the designation of Main Street Amherst in 2002. Main Street Amherst is a 501©3 non-profit organization whose mission is to promote and maintain an economically vital historic downtown and business district that is attractive and accessible to people of all ages. The city received the designation from Heritage Ohio, Inc., a statewide, not-for-profit organization dedicated to encouraging and assisting people and organizations to protect and preserve our heritage. The Main Street program is designed to improve all aspects of the downtown or central business district, producing both tangible and intangible benefits. Improving economic management, strengthening public participation and making downtown a fun place to visit are as critical to Main Street’s future as recruiting new businesses, rehabilitating buildings and expanding parking. The Main Street program has earned national recognition as a practical strategy appropriately scaled to a community’s local resources and conditions. And because it is a locally driven program, all initiative stems from local issues and concerns. Teresa L. Gilles, Main Street Amherst Main Street Amherst volunteers

Continued Excellence in Amherst Schools Classroom Innovations and Quality Programming Bring Families to Amherst The Amherst Exempted Village School District in Lorain County is quickly becoming a highly sought after school district as more families seek high-quality educational opportunities for their children. Working with staff, administration, parents and community members, our schools continue to innovate and explore new ground while remaining financially frugal. Technology & Curriculum Improvements Our schools continue to be Lorain County leaders in keeping up-to-date technology in the classroom, and using it to improve student learning. We have adopted a new technology curriculum for grades K-6, ensuring our students are well adapted to technology in the classroom at a young age. Our computer labs at Harris Elementary and Nord Middle School were recently upgraded, and we added a computer lab at Amherst Junior High for a new technology elective. Due to an expansion of our dual enrollment program with LCCC, our high school students can complete college coursework without leaving Steele High School!

Top State Test Grades This year, the State of Ohio changed the method they use to grade school performance, however what did not change was Amherst Schools’ continued excellence. We have earned eleven consecutive “Excellent” ratings, and this year we earned our highest ever Performance Index score. Our district received an “A” in five areas, leading all of Lorain County, and earned “B”s in three other areas. These scores are a testament to high-quality programming provided by our schools, and the continued commitment to education shared by the students, staff, parents, and community members of the Amherst Exempted Village School District. Enhanced Safety and Care Parents should always be confident that their child is safe in the care of our capable staff members. This year, all our staff members went through ALICE training to ensure we are prepared for any emergency situation. We also instituted the before and after school “Comet Kids” program to help assure families with child care needs that their kids will be in a safe environment. We continue to surpass school security standards by having school resource police officers in our buildings, by ensuring there are phones in all our classrooms for emergencies, by providing ‘panic buttons’ to staff members, and by maintaining camera-based entry systems for each building. Please find us on Facebook, Twitter, or contact us by phone at 440-9884406 or email Superintendent Sayers at steve_sayers@amherstk12.org. We are Steve Sayers, Superintendent always available.

Turning “For Sale” into “Sold!” Curb appeal is the first step to selling your home. No one wants to buy a previous owner's dirty house. Power-wash the siding, paint if needed and wash windows until they shine. Trees, shrubs, and flowers should be neat and tidy, the garden weeded and the lawn mowed and edged. Once you've removed everything that isn't necessary, add touches such as large, lush flower pots or hanging planters to welcome visitors. Once you've created a promising exterior, you need to focus on the interior. The key to staging is to make it meaningful, set the tone and suggest countless possibilities. That means you need to remove everything that could distract the buyer's attention. Keep only what you must to remain functional. If you don't use something everyday, pack it for the move. Like the exterior, the inside needs to be neat and clean. If paint is showing signs of age, repaint. Neutrals often work best. Once the house is clean, stage your home with minimal furnishings. If you need inspiration, visit some model homes to see how decorators have put rooms together. Arrange furniture to enhance the strengths of the room and facilitate traffic flow. Remove anything personal such as family pictures and mementos and open the curtains to allow natural light to fill the room. Appeal to the buyer's sense of smell. Hot apple cider, cinnamon rolls, or fresh baked cookies add a homey touch. If you would like more information on buying or selling homes, contact Kaye Norenberg- Realtor for Keller Williams at 440-935-6862 or knorenberg@gmail.com.

Therapeutic Hypothermia Reduces Heart Damage In a continuing effort to provide patients with the latest

technology in emergency care, EMH Elyria Medical Center is now utilizing Therapeutic Hypothermia. During cardiac arrest, a patient’s heart stops, which can cause damage to the heart muscle and surrounding tissue. Using computer-controlled cooling units, specially trained physicians and nurses slowly lower the body temperature of cardiac arrest patients to 89-93 degrees Fahrenheit over a period of 24 hours. This process helps slow down their

metabolism, thus reducing further damage to tissue. Approved and recommended by the American Heart Association, Therapeutic Hypothermia has been shown to help patients retain neurological function after a cardiac event. EMH Elyria Medical Center is the first hospital in Lorain County to utilize this innovative technology in our emergency department, as well as for inpatients in our critical care units. To learn more, please log on to www.emh-healthcare. org and select “Emergency Services. See ad on back cover.

Pet Health: Keep Your Pet Safe, Spay & Neuter The most important thing to know about spaying &

neutering is that it saves lives. In every community, in every state, there are animals sitting in shelters, waiting for homes. Only half or less of them will have one. The rest will be euthanized. That’s why now, more than ever, getting your pet altered is a top priority. Pets that are spayed or neutered live longer, healthier lives. Unfortunately, 90% of dogs who are hit by cars are intact males. Unspayed females are very susceptible to having multiple diseases of the reproduction system. The benefits of spaying and neutering include: In males, there is no chance for testicular cancer. In females, there is no chance for ovarian cancer or uterine infections, which in most cases are deadly. Other reproductive related cancers (such as mammary cancer) are greatly reduced. Your pet will not experience “heat” or “ovulation” periods. While spaying or neutering your pet is a big decision, take into consideration your pet’s health and the overpopulation of pets currently. If you are still unsure, feel free to contact us to discuss the topic further. Amherst Animal Hospital accepts emails at info@amherstanimal.com or visit their website at www.amherstanimal.com.
