City Overview

North Ridgeville: Family Friendly and Growing Photo credit: Jason Shaffer Photography

By Ken McEntee

The allure of the old and the new in North Ridgeville are prominently exemplified within a mile of one another on Lorain Road. After dark during the summer months, travelers on the Ohio Turnpike may take in a disappearing glimpse of Americana as they whiz by the giant screens of the Aut-O-Rama Drive-In theater – one of only about 360 drive-ins left in the country. Just a minute northeast of the 48-year-old Aut-O-Rama, one of North Ridgeville’s newest development projects, the University Partnership Ridge Campus of Lorain County Community College, opened earlier this year. With a mission to provide local residents with the higher education they need to succeed in the 21st century, the campus offers bachelors and graduate level degrees in partnership with the University of Toledo. The city’s history holds a warm place 2

in the heart of Scott Hosler, president of the North Ridgeville Kiwanis Club and curator of the North Ridgeville Historical Society and Museum. A resident for most of his life, Hosler, co-owner of Mehco Custom Printing, has fond memories of the city’s popular Corn Festival, which started in 1975. “The festival still brings in a ton of people and Kiwanis will be there this year giving away corn,” Hosler says. Now one of the fastest growing cities in Northeast Ohio, with a population of almost 30,000 residents, North Ridgeville began as Ridgeville Township. Settlers from Waterbury, Conn. arrived in the area in 1810 and organized the township three years later. The name, the Historical Society says, came from the area’s five geological ridges formed by the receding Ice Age glaciers that created Lake Erie. Because of confusion with another town named Ridgeville, near Dayton, the local Post Office changed its name

to North Ridgeville in 1829. That name was adopted when the township was incorporated as a village in 1958, then as a city in 1960, when the population topped 5,000. Low taxes and convenient highway access are among the factors that made North Ridgeville the fastest growing city in the Cleveland Metropolitan area before the crash of the housing market, says Tony DeAnna, a North Ridgeville resident and real estate agent with Ohio Family Realty. The city’s population increased 32 percent, from 22,338 in 2000 to 29,465 in 2010. “Location and affordability were the main reasons I moved to North Ridgeville in 2007,” DeAnna says. “You have direct access to I-480 and the Ohio Turnpike and I-90 and Route 2 also are easily accessible. You can jump on the highway and go anywhere you want. You have the lower taxes of Lorain Country, yet you have quick access to retail destinations

like Great Northern and Crocker Park.” North Ridgeville offers homes to match any budget – with a lot of room for building, he says. “There are new developments where you can spend $250,000 for the traditional four bedroom colonial, but there also are smaller homes, condos and re-sales with acreage out in the country areas,” DeAnna says. North Ridgeville, says Kevin Corcoran, president of City Council, has a lot to offer residents and businesses. “We are a very friendly community with anything that a young family would want,” Corcoran says. “There is a lot for kids to do, from sports and other youth programs to our parkland, which includes a stocked four-acre fishing lake in South Central Park, where no permits are required.” The 30-acre South Central Park also includes a splash pad for children, along with other recreational equipment and picnic areas.

Highway access and proximity to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport are among the major advantages North

Mayor Deanna L. Hill 1944-2013 Deanna L. Hill, a life-long resident of North Ridgeville, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2013 after battling a two year illness. She was born in Lakewood, Ohio on February 15, 1944. After graduating from North Ridgeville High School in 1962, she received her bachelor's degree from Baldwin Wallace University and her masters from Akron University. She was a teacher and administrator in North RidDeanna L. Hill geville City Schools for 26 years, where she was president of the local teacher's union. She also served as Congressman Sherrod Brown’s District Chief of Staff and then became the first woman Mayor of North Ridgeville, serving the community from 1996 to 2003. As a member of the Ohio Council of Mayors and many other county and state committees and boards, she was involved and effective. From 2006 until she retired in 2011, she was the Director of Economic Development for the Lorain County Auditor's Office. Deanna was a conscientious and thoughtful resident and mayor who was interested in the betterment of North Ridgeville for all, residents and businesses alike, and she will be sorely missed. 3

Education

North Ridgeville City Schools Rated Excellent This past year, North Ridgeville City

Schools received an “Excellent” rating from the Ohio Department of Education for the 2011-2012 school year. The District is home to over 4,000 students and comprised of seven educational facilities: North Ridgeville High School, grades 9-12; North Ridgeville Middle School, grades 6-8; Wilcox Elementary, grades 4-5; Liberty Elementary, grades 2-3; Lear North Elementary, first grade; North Ridgeville Education Center, Kindergarten; and Early Childhood Learning Center, preschool. Our educational opportunities include on-site distance learning, vocational, business and college prep course work, gifted, special education, career shadowing and internship programs.

Our high school has been named the Ohio Lottery School of the year twice in the past three years. The Ranger community is truly unique. The staff is committed to providing the best education for your child. They continually work to find new, innovative and creative ways to teach, obtain financial grants to expand their abilities in the classroom and strive to improve the academics in a progressive, systematic manner. Their dedication and involvement extends beyond the classroom walls to ensure that each student reaches their full potential. Our motto: “Building on Success, One Individual at a Time” is exemplified through our extraordinary staff. The District continues to experience growth each year. The continued success of North Ridgeville City Schools is a result of the strong community support. This support was shown by the passage of a new operating levy in November of 2012 and the renewal of an existing levy in May 2013. In financial reporting, the District has received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the last 12 years. We spend more of our budget on instruction per pupil (57%) and less on administration per pupil (10%) when compared to the state average. CommStar Credit Union THEY’RE EVERYWHERE YOU ARE... WITH A BETTER BANKING OPTION!

C

elebrating a monumental milestone of 75 years of business in 2013, CommStar Credit Union is growing, offering new products, and presenting an alternative to a “one-size fits all” banking experience. Offering personal services with accounts tailored to individual needs and now offering a full mortgage department, CommStar is a one-stop financial service organization. Membership at CommStar is no longer tailored to one specific group, but is a community charter. This means if you live, work, worship, or attend school in Lorain County, you are eligible to have accounts. CommStar offers the same types of accounts as banks, but generally at lower costs. Because a Credit Union is owned by its members (anyone that has an account), we do not pay a board of directors or shareholders, therefore return profit to you in the form of dividends. This also allows us to offer lower rates on loans, saving you even more! Our new mortgage department has low cost, low down payment, conventional home loans with competitive interest rates. We offer Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA and USDA Mortgage Loans. CommStar has put our “people helping people” philosophy into our

mortgage line by offering streamline refinancing that could get you today’s great interest rates, even if you owe more than your current property value. For people interested in building a new home, we offer one of the best construction loan programs around. Open and fixed Equity Lines of Credit top off our line of Mortgage Services, available to current homeowners. CommStar wants to make sure you have the products and services you need, without the ones you don’t. CommStar is truly a banking experience, and our staff is here, ready to show you.

The Bogner Family 50 YEARS IN FUNERAL SERVICE

I

n January 1963, Harold and Kathy Bogner moved into the former Snyder home on Center Ridge Road and by April had completed its conversion into the first funeral home in the City of North Ridgeville.

In 1997 their son, David and his wife, Mary Beth built a larger, more modern facility at 36625 Center Ridge Road now known as Bogner Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services. The Bogner family tradition of personal, compassionate service at a reasonable cost is now 50 years strong. David states, “We would like to thank the many families we have had the privilege to serve and our friends in the community who have recommended us. We appreciate them faithfully thinking of us in times of need. There is no greater compliment. We feel blessed and look forward to serving the community for many more years.”

For drivers with night vision complaints, here are some help tips: Wear a hat and sunglasses during the day. Exposure to bright sunlight, especially at the beach or lake “bleaches” the photoreceptors in your eyes, thus lengthening the time it takes them to adjust to the dark. Normally, your eyes reach full darkadaptation in about 30 minutes but takes longer after exposure to the sun. Make your windshield disappear. If you can “see” your windshield, it needs to be cleaned. Clean windows inside and out with an alcohol-based cleaner made for windows and dry with a microfiber cloth. Light transmitted through a dirty windshield intensifies glare as the light refracts off dirt, smudges and grim. Dim the dash lights. Your instrument panel has a rheostat and Expect Extraordinary.

keeping it just bright enough for the instruments to remain safely legible will help. The dimmer the light inside your car, the better you see outside. Adjust your mirrors. To eliminate reflected glare from headlights behind you, flip your car’s center mounted rearview mirror to the “night” setting. Get your eyes checked regularly. These tips are helpful for people who have normal functioning vision. For people who show signs of cataracts, macular scarring, ARMD, or glaucoma, your doctor can recommend custom eyeglasses options that improve visual performance. Early detection of eye conditions can improve the likelihood of effective treatment. Dr. Andrea L. Fisher practices at North Coast Eye Care in North Ridgeville, Avon, Amherst, and Vermilion and is accepting new patients of all ages. See what you’ve been missing.

GUM DISEASE AND YOUR HEALTH It’s a fact that more teeth are lost to gum disease than decay. Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is a silent infection that is not Dr. Scott Arndt accompanied by pain. It can cause health problems in other parts of your body and has been shown to play a role in diabetes, heart disease, and even premature births. Bacteria that cause gum disease can get into the bloodstream and cause inflammation in other body tissues. You may be developing gum disease if your gums bleed during or after you brush your teeth. Other symptoms can include: gums receding from your teeth, red, swollen, or tender gums, bad breath and a bad taste in your mouth, or your teeth have become loose, are moving apart, or you noticed that your teeth feel like they fit together differently when you bite. Using tobacco is also a major risk factor for not only gum disease but for oral cancer. Practicing good oral hygiene with brushing and flossing regularly is a good way to avoid gum disease along with seeing a dentist for regular check ups. Dr. Arndt at Center Ridge Dental, 33650 Center Ridge Road, will be happy to help you with all of your dental healthcare needs. Call him at 440-327-9006.

Homes & Real Estate

North Ridgeville Community Guide

Turning “For Sale” into “Sold!” Buying or selling a home is often the biggest decision a person will make in their lifetime. Here are a few suggestions to help when beginning your selling process. Set the stage as first impressions are very important. Make sure your property is clean and neat, inside and out. When people drive up to your home, the first impression can make or break the sale. Peeling paint, uncut lawns and shrubbery are a definite no-no. It goes without saying that the interior of your home should be clean, neat and freshly painted, if necessary or possible. Walls should be clean, neutral and uncluttered. Welllit homes show better. Wash all of the windows, floors and appliances; make sure drapes are clean and opened to let in natural light. De-clutter surfaces and remove personal items

from around the house. Spending a small amount of money to “stage” your house can help you get a higher price in the long run. You want buyers to envision themselves living there so let your house be the haven they fall in love with! Price your property correctly for your neighborhood and not what you would like to get. No matter what the market conditions are, a realistic price for your area will get your home sold in a reasonable time frame. Talk with a real estate agent that has experience in your area. The realtor will review recently sold properties, current listings and assist in establishing a price that will sell your home as quickly as the current market conditions will allow. Call Ohio Family Realty today for all of your real estate needs at 440-731-8070.

Your County. Your Chamber. Together! The Lorain County Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 25th year of bringing the business communities of Lorain County “Together”. When business leaders decided to create this regional chamber, it was always meant to showcase the diversity and resiliency of Lorain County, something that is even more evident today. While things have changed a lot in 25 years, the County Chamber’s commitment to its members has never wavered – make Lorain County a great place to live, work, play and pray. During the 25th Anniversary year, the Lorain County Chamber also laid claim to being the fastest growing Chamber in Ohio when it held a membership campaign and reached over 700 member companies who were part of the regional Chamber. With a new influx of businesses, the County Chamber has added many exciting events to its calendar and is continually working to promote business investment in and around Lorain County. The Lorain County Chamber is a founding member of the Lorain County Growth Partnership, home to the Lorain County Safety Council, provides access to Small Business development and hosts events for our local teachers, politicians and business leaders. The County Chamber looks to even more growth in the future. Your County. Your Chamber. Together! 19
