The Rapid Rise of Brasserie Food

L

ast week I committed one of the cardinal sins of journalism: I recycled an article. And not only did I recycle the article, I neglected to read it and make changes before before sending it the Editor with instructions only to ‘update it.’ I’m certainly not making excuses but that is just the reality. The article, entitled ‘Living On-Campus or Off-Campus, We Help You Decide!’ contained, amongst others, a section specifically addressing on campus food. I apologize for the contents of the article pertaining to the food, and particularly the Brasserie. The article was initially published two and a half years, when it remained relevant to Brasserie and the state of on-campus food at Bond. This is no longer the case and I apologize to Glen

by Jake Rischbeith

Harding, Food and Beverage Manager and Vinnie Smith, Head Chef for the sentiments contained within that article. Under Glen’s hard work and supervision, the state of on-campus food is far better than ever been before and continues to improve. Not only do we have a dynamic menu catering for a range of options and eating requirements, but the introduction of the Juice Bar, growth of alternate eating options in the form of the sandwich bar and buffet and daily specials has seen changing attitudes regarding food at Bond. When I moved on-campus at the end of 2013, the driving factor behind my decision was my distaste for on-campus food. Regularly spending 12 hours a day at Bond, I’ve found

myself frequenting the Brasserie more by choice than compulsion and genuinely enjoying it. The reality is the days of uncooked meals and unreported food poisoning is long gone. Students love nothing more than complaining about food and accommodation and that’s an unfortunate reality for people in Glen and Vinnie’s position, but the good grace with which Glen accepted the unintended, unwarranted and baseless criticism contained within last weeks article speaks to his professionalism and I apologize again to both he and Vinnie.

Give the Brasserie a shot, even if it is for a fresh juice on your way to class or a breakfast in the morning. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised, I know I was.
