ditor’s note

Hey Bondies, Hope you had an awesome weekend! Congrats to anyone that fronted up for classes after the Law Ball induced haze of Sunday! Congratualtions to the out-going committee and wlecome to the Newbies! We’re all eager to see where you will take the Faculty. This week is going to be demanding, there’s those pesky academic commitments, fantastic initiatives such as the Blanket drive student ambassador calls and finally we’ve got Mid-Sem Bash coming up (next week) to cure those late-night-study-woes. Enjoy the read - it’s swimming in puns and between Law Ball and Scuba you’ll feel like you have water on the brain. Wishing you lots of laughs! Michaela Orsmond

BUSA has identified the need for a Sporting Audit to address the strategic direction of Bond Sport. The Audit reflects the first student led analysis of sport at Bond and will provide a series of recommendations including a strategic plan for the next 5 years. The Audit will seek submissions from the Office of Sport and Recreation, Pathways and Partnerships, the Bond University Rugby Club and Sporting Club Presidents to provide a series of recommendations addressing: Funding and Application Processes Facilities Development Bond Elite Sports Program (BESP) University Games Scholarships Corporate Partners and Sponsors A sporting review of this kind has never been undertaken at Bond and will provide an important framework from which to reform pre-existing sporting initiatives, provide avenues to additional programs and allow for greater transparency and communication between the various administrative bodies catering for sport at Bond. The merge of the Student Council and Sporting Association in 2008 had a range of repercussions on the state of Bond Sport. Field redevelopments, increased profile of elite athletes and an increase in demand from sporting clubs have all had an impact on the changing face of Bond Sport. Other aspects of the Audit will analyse and suggests mechanism for reform regarding the funding application process, increased profile of particular ‘platinum’ sports and address the scope for an increased number of sporting scholarships. Release of the audit is scheduled by the end of semester. If you have any questions regarding the Audit or anything else related to Bond Sport, contact Jake Rischbieth at jake.rischbieth@student.bond.edu.au. Jake

BALLING UNDER THE SEA

On Saturday the 21st of June, after 10 months of planning, numerous visits to Jupiters, 108 dietary requirement emails, and one delicious day of menu tasting, Law Ball finally arrived. All the guests, particularly the incumbent LSA committee, were preparing for a night of fun and frivolity under the deep blue lights of the undersea dreamcave that was the Jupiters Ball Room. It was to be the LSA’s final evening together as a committee – and we were going to sea (attempted pun) our term out in style. The afternoon saw Vice-President Jack Leonard get the most responses of any post in the committee Facebook group since its creation when he posted: “Official committee business: does anyone have any beverage preferences for pre-drinks?” The night could only go well from there. When the clock finally reached 7pm, guests flooded in by the hundreds, eager to get their fill of the four hours of inclusive drinks and delicious food. As the Ball progressed, we reached the handover from the incumbent LSA committee to the newly elected group for the 2014-15 term. The incumbent committee were ecstatic to see the LSA reigns being taken by an enthusiastic group of youngins with ideas spilling out of their ears. The night proved to be a massive success. The 2013-14 LSA would like to extend a huge thank you to all guests for attending and wish the next committee the best of luck for the coming year. I am hugely appreciative that I have been able to spend the past 12 months with such an inspiring group of individuals, and I am delighted that I will be able to be lead the new committee into the future – bring on 2014-15! 10/10 WOULD DIVE The Bond Scuba Club has had another busy start to the semester with heaps of events for both first-timers and experienced divers. Our club info night in week 3 had a massive turnout of both new and familiar faces. It was a great opportunity for all members to get across the events we have planned as well as meet with or strategic partner Kirra Dive. In weeks 4 and 5 we successfully ran our come-and-try sessions in the Bond pool. It was great to see a large attendance to these sessions, with many of the attendees going on to gain certification. Many took the opportunity to start their recreational diving journey at Julian Rocks, Byron Bay. On the day, this dive spot was home to some great marine life including a few grey nurse sharks. My personal highlight this semester was the double dive at Cook Island (located offshore, south of Tweed Heads). The vis was great and there was an abundance of coral, fish, wobbegongs, leopard sharks as well as 5 big green turtles.

by Dane Marley

Later this semester we will be returning to the HMAS Brisbane wreck (located off the Sunshine Coast), as well as heading to North Stradbroke Island for an overnight dive trip. We currently have club t-shirts under production and will hopefully have them in stock early next week. In my personal experience, becoming a diver gives you a great sense of community, in that you get to meet heaps of awesome people, go to heaps of excellent places and do some truly great things. Getting involved in our events requires no skill or equipment and we, in conjunction with Kirra Dive, aim to accommodate everyone from first-time uncertified divers to underwater experts. For further information about our events or to contact us, please visit our Facebook page at facebook.com/bondscuba

This Friday we will be night diving the Tweed River, followed by our club BBQ and party! Photo | Nick Bonner 6 | scope

BLOCK BATTLES

The word ‘block’ has had a variety of meanings over the years. For some, it may simply refer to the shape of a cube. For others, it may be explicit of a suburban block or implicit of a man’s genitalia. Or in combination, we can string together sentences of enormous enjoyment; for example, a man sky-dived into a suburban block and landed on a wooden block so hard that it knocked his own wooden block off. Whether this example is referring to two definitions of block or three, is entirely up to the reader’s interpretation. What we can ascertain however, is that any interpretation of this sentence perfectly summarises my first week of living in the blocks. Since the Vice Chancellor first spawned me out of volcanic ash in the beginning of semester 141, I have had a very long-winded ‘intrapersonal conflict’ over which block (A or B) is better. Like doing battle with a 13 feet tall amazonian tree frog, projecting my thoughts onto paper has been a very strenuous and emotionally exhausting task; alas, here goes nothing. First we shall examine some of the fundamentals of blocks and block-lore. In the first weeks as a freshman at Bond, you will joke about how deceptively similar A block and B block sounds to how a warden may choose to categorise prison blocks. You will laugh and believe it’s all rubbish, but then one day, towards the end of the semester you’re going to drop the soap and realise you had never been more wrong in your life. For the first two semesters as a student living in the blocks, you’re going to befriend someone and spend lots of your leisure time with them, open up to them and perhaps even have a relationship with them. In your third semester you’re going to realise that this person is ten years older than they claimed, never lived in the blocks and was never even a student at Bond University. At this point I recommend a blood test. With this in mind, let’s battle it out between the A and the B. We shall contest this by outlining pros and cons for each block: 8 | scope

B block:

A block:

con: someone might die

con: too quiet

pro: there’s beer pro: there’s beer

pro: puns may be used to describe B block (e.g. ‘B cool’ or ‘are you going to B - cool?’)

con: if B block was knocked down with a wrecking ball and gassed with helium, it wouldn’t be anywhere near as good as A block pro: cannot stress beer enough

con: B is the second letter in the alphabet Pro: If there’s a fire alarm, one man will honourably take the blame for setting it off. A testament to B blocker integrity.

pro: it’s quiet

pro: it’s closer to the university con: it’s further from the pub

pro: A is the first letter of the alphabet

con: in reverse order, it’s actually the last letter of the alphabet

pro: you could tell someone ‘I was staying at A block’ and they may think you said ‘I was staying at a block’

con: this could create confusion in conversation and may potentially jeopardise a relationship

pro: people in B block keep their windows open at night

Okay, so after processing these key points many times over, I’m still left in a predicament; B block is a conspicuous animal shack while A block reeks of nerds galore. I do not wish to subdue myself to bias (being an active member of the Milkyway clan), so I won’t be candid. Instead, I decided to consult my mother, Melissa Slattery. She said this: “Jesus Christ once said to all of us that we must love our neighbours as well love ourselves. If B block is your neighbour, why would you sabotage the beneficiaries of this residence for the sake of your own publication? Hatred is an infliction on the world that must be cured with love. Brood the world with a warm breast and one day we shall all fly to Zion, as promised by the creator himself. Love, your mother.” So that settles it. A block and B block unite so that we can take down the travesty that is north and south tower. Patrick Slattery

Hello wonderful people, and welcome to Week 7! As the 2013/14 Special Interests Director on BUSA, my past 10 months have predominantly been overtaken by the 2014 Bond In Africa (BAfrica) Program. It has been a long process to get to where we are today from preparing information packs, to application forms, participant assessments and interviews, establishing itineraries, organising the logistics, vaccinations, creating project objectives and fundraising - now there is now only a few short weeks left until we leave! This year there are two BAfrica programs running alongside each other - the Cape Town Program and the Mulanje Mission Program. In this issue of Scope you will have the opportunity to meet all of our wonderful, world-changing participants who have volunteered to give up their entire semester break for an unforgettable experience in Africa. We hope these participant profiles will help put a face to a name, and make reading their blog posts from whilst they are in Africa much more personal. Also in Scope this week, read about the human rights organisations our Cape Town participants will have the privilege of working in during their time in South Africa, and discover the projects our Mulanje Mission participants will be facilitating - everything from classroom renovations, to marketing strategies, to the development of IT systems. Throughout my past eleven semesters at Bond, convening the Bond In Africa program has been one of the most extraordinary experiences for me, and I am so excited and inspired by the passion of the students, applicants and support of everybody else around us. As we get closer to our departure date, we will continue to have several events and opportunities to still be involved in the 2014 program. Stay up to date with our exciting developments by liking our Facebook page ‘Bond In Africa’.

Blanket Appeal !! Attention Bondies! Bond University is working in conjunction with the Tweed homeless organisation ‘You Have a Friend’ to collect blankets and jackets for the homeless, which are urgently required to get them through this chilly winter. There will be a donation basket in the MLC and in the BUSA office for those who wish to contribute. ‘You Have a Friend’ was founded by Pride of Australia finalist John Lee in 2008. The organisation has since expanded considerably and provides support by way of street outreaching, accommodation, food and safe shelter. It is reliant on volunteers who work to support the marginalised in South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales. Volunteers often contact victims of domestic violence and who urgently require relocation to safe environments. For more information, contact penelope.meeves@student.bond.edu.au or Georgie Meeves at 0425 933 995.

Living On-Campus or Off-Campus? We help you decide! THE FOOD Probably the most outstanding factor, on-campus food, for lack of a better word, is shithouse. Now, I’ll be the first to admit that sometimes the Bra serves up a culinary treat (such as the now extinct penne bolognaise or critically endangered roti chanai), but on the whole, the average meal from this establishment is far from good, nice, yum, edible even… whatever you want to call it. I have had a number of experiences involving uncooked steak and eggs, to the point of my steak leaking blood and the white of my yolks remaining semi-transparent. Off campus dining offers many an option, but many students end up eating nothing, or at the Bra, back where they started. Nevertheless, at least these students have a multitude of options at their disposal and aren’t limited to the place where food poison isn’t necessarily the

THE LIVING ARRANGEMENTS Now this is a tough one, because room sizes, access to bathrooms and other facilities differs on campus. The Blocks for example, include a small room, a typically revolting common room and even more horrifying communal bathroom. The towers sport more upmarket accommodation but the mood

PARENTS

22 | scope

V E R D I C T

Parents are interesting creatures; they can be caring, loving, thoughtful and generous whilst being nosy, irritating and occasionally intrusive at the same time. You can’t win this one. If you live off campus with no parents, you miss out on that delicious cooking and oh so helpful cleaning, but you can do what you want, when you want. If you live with your parents off campus, then you are probably more hygienic than the rest of us, but chances are you don’t have half as much fun. On campus living, you stay clean (because of the lovely cleaners who will willingly you lock you out of your corridor, given half the chance) but lack the home comforts and generosity of your parents. The reality is, you can’t win.

CAMPUS

DRA

destroying ‘king single’ bed haunts each and every res student. You can’t escape it, and it doesn’t matter how hard you try, two people don’t fit in it, comfortably at least. Just because you live off campus, doesn’t mean you’ll have it any better. I know one person, who lives in a converted to basement, however in his defence, he does have his own bathroom, scenic lakeside views and a pet

ROOMMATES Both a blessing and a curse, roommates can make or break a living arrangement. This is where living on campus shines; you are never locked in to a roommate for longer than a semester. Leases can last for months when living off campus and you can be stuck with people who you would rather kill than live with any longer. There can be benefits, such as living in the same house as someone you are romantically linked to, but this can have a negative side also. In more extreme cases, roommates can become obsessive compulsive, infected with contagious diseases, permanently loud and all manner of undesirable things. You can’t hide things from roommates either, they will find out things about you that they wish they never did and become privy to some classified information. Be careful who you live

GENERAL CLEANLINESS & HYGIENE As the final category of this review, hygiene is often neglected in the day-to-day life of university students. Students living on campus are blessed to have a United Nations like composition of cleaners. These talented ladies have seen some very scary things, yet fearlessly enter into rooms around campus everyday to deal with what lies within. They can’t clean everything though but they do their best. Living off campus is risky. You have to balance shared living with a roommate who may or may not be as clean as you. You have dishes to wash, appliances to clean and bathrooms to deal with. My hint, bite the bullet and hire a cleaner once a month.

AW

OFF-CAMPUS

So there it is! Make up your own mind and decide what is better for you, just choose your roommates wisely and try to preserve relationships. Campus life will get tedious after a while, but I know one thing for sure, I’ve still got a few more semesters left in me yet. Jake Rischbieth
