Editor’s Letter October is a month of change and as the winter months draw in, the team at Wakehurst are busy putting the finishing touches to the spectacular Glow Wild event. See page 22 for more details about this magical winter trail, in its tenth year. We’ve some inspirational images this month, from the wonderful photography of Sussex Wildlife Trust to some paintings from the very talented members of the Henfield Art Club. This Autumn marks the 40th anniversary of Henfield Art Club’s annual exhibition in the Henfield Hall – do check out this wonderful local event at the end of October. Volunteering is essential to our community and local resident Dawn Butcher talks to us on page 36 about volunteering for the Henfield Community Partnership – just one of the options open to those who have some time to spare. Finally, we’re absolutely delighted to welcome Eric Williams back to Henfield! Eric and his family have faced an unimaginably difficult year and they’re hugely grateful to all those who have helped with the move. From close friends to complete strangers, there’s been a massive team of people helping to make the necessary adjustments – see page 26 for more about this moving journey.

Revd Harriet at Portsmouth Cathedral In mid-June we were thrilled to hear that Revd Harriet (formerly the curate in Henfield, Shermanbury and Woodmancote and currently the Rector of Harting and Elsted and Treyford cum Didling) will be beginning a new chapter of her life as the Canon Chancellor and Vice Dean of Portsmouth Cathedral in September 2023. Harriet expressed her excitement in joining Portsmouth Cathedral: “I am delighted to be joining the team at the Cathedral and the Diocese of Portsmouth. The role of Canon Chancellor is such an exciting one, combining as it does, learning, participation, and the arts, in the work of building up and growing the community of faith, and seeking to draw others into the life of God through the Cathedral’s witness and mission. It is a wonderful time to be joining the Cathedral community, as the new vision begins to take off, and I look forward with excitement and anticipation to the years ahead.” Bishop Jonathan said: “I am delighted by this appointment; Harriet will bring her musical background and theological gifts to the work of Canon Chancellor. It is a joy to welcome her into the life of our diocese and Cathedral Church.” The Dean of Portsmouth, the Very Rev Anthony Cane, said: “Harriet is an outstanding priest with a deep understanding of cathedral life and ministry. I am delighted at the substantial gifts and experience she will bring to Portsmouth, and the leadership of our work in learning, teaching and the arts, and in congregational discipleship and growth.” We send our heartiest congratulations to Harriet.

Stay Safe from Scams

Henfield Computer Club invite you to join us for our next presentation ‘Staying Safe from Scams’. More than ever before, we have been relying on technology to enable us to work, learn and connect with each other. Inevitably, criminals have exploited and used our increased digital lives to their advantage. This has resulted in a rise in scams including: telephone, courier and romance fraud which have all become an increased concern in West Sussex. Not only is there the financial impact on victims but the emotional impact can be even more significant. To help raise awareness of these different types of scams, this presentation will provide you with the knowledge on how to spot them, and what to do if you or your family become a victim of online fraud.

Woods Mill update

The Sussex Wildlife Trust has reluctantly decided to put the office buildings at Woods Mill up for sale. The nature reserve remains in Trust ownership and there will be no changes in terms of public access or use of the reserve. Our intention is that education and engagement activities will continue to be delivered from the site. There is a great awareness among the staff, trustees and volunteers that the offices at Woods Mill are a huge part of our identity and history as a Trust, and this is not a decision that has been taken lightly. There are several reasons behind the difficult decision to sell the building, which is sadly no longer suitable as an office for the Trust’s workforce. The liabilities attached to the building are significant and we feel the level of expenditure required cannot be justified when, now more than ever, it is vital that our funds are spent to further our charitable objectives of protecting and restoring wildlife and habitats, and inspiring people about nature.

BN5 Birds

When Henfield Birdwatch members are asked what to do with a young chick that has fallen out of a nest, we always say to leave it alone; the parents will more than likely find the chick and continue to feed it. I remember finding a Song Thrush chick that had fallen from a nest. We could see the nest and decided to get our ladder and climb up to put it back in. Unfortunately we knocked the nest and another chick fell out! We felt so guilty because we knew we should have left it. We are also asked about sickly birds. The same advice applies; leave it alone and it may recover. If it doesn’t it will provide a nice meal for a fox and that is Nature’s way. This year we saw a young, sick Blackbird out in the open on our patio; it was stock still with half closed eyes and was rocking ever so slightly. We went right up to the bird and it didn’t move at all, in fact it didn’t appear to be able to see us. Our first thought was Avian ‘Flu. We continued to keep an eye on it expecting it to die, it did a few watery poos and half an hour later we saw it scuttle for cover under a bush and then fly away. The only bird that we are likely to get in Henfield that WILL need help if found on the ground are Swifts. If you find one pick it up and put it in a well-ventilated box in soft material (see photo)

Fun Saturday in Steyning

What an Opening Day for the Steyning & District Food and Drink Festival ! The sun shone, the morning Farmers Market was a buzz with visitors to check out the wonderful variety of stalls together with ‘Raising Their Spirits’ by taking a taste or two of locally made gins & spirits. Another big occasion at the Market was the Prize Giving for the Allotment Competition which took place at 11am. Kathryn Hillman (Rushfields Plant Centre) & Lou Crush (Steyning Farmers Market) had judged the allotments in late July, but today was the day when the winners were declared. There were 6 classes and all won generous vouchers from Rushfields Plant Centre, who have very kindly sponsored this competition for very many years now. The overall champion also received a Trophy donated by the Steyning & District Community Partnership. Saturday afternoon was equally as busy with the judging of the shop windows in Steyning High Street. The judges this year were Finn Bigg & Gemma Thompson from Solo, The Training Club. The job was not easy and there were two classes, one for Foodie shops and one for Non-Foodie and the winners were: (Non Foodie Shops) Sing a Song of Sixpence (Wasn’t that a dainty dish to set before the King) - Foundry Cast Iron and; (Foodie): Emily’s - A Giant’s Crown; The time and thought that had gone into creating all the windows was superb. All in all, the whole of Steyning High Street were having great fun and a very happy start to the Festival, (which will run until 7th October with a mass of superb offers 16 | BN5 Magazine

Roll up your Sleeves for a Morning of Grape Picking at Leonardslee

Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens is predicting a bumper 2023 harvest for its Sussex Wine and is inviting wine lovers to participate in the free annual grape picking event in October. Visitors can spend a morning immersed in the winemaking process by hand-harvesting grapes straight from the vineyard. With a final October date to be announced,

subject to harvest conditions, the festivities will kick off at 8am with fresh pastries and a choice of tea or coffee to provide fuel for the day ahead. From 8:30am to 12:30pm, guests will receive a hands-on education in grape harvesting, gathering grapes from the vines and learning about viticulture from the vineyard experts. It’s satisfying, rewarding work that gives a true taste of life as a winegrower, says Barry Anderson managing director of Leonardslee’s wine operations. After working up an appetite in the vineyard, participants can relax and refuel. A harvest table lunch featuring light bites will be available from 12:30pm onward. Guests can also enjoy a glass of sparkling wine from Leonardslee’s sister vineyard, Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate in South Africa. The grapes picked during the event will contribute to the 2023 vintage from the House of Leonardslee vineyard. Planted in 2017 across 37 acres, the estate contains over 85,000 vines and produces sparkling wines from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The first vintage release is in June 2024. Leonardslee is anticipating an excellent 2023 harvest. Near perfect weather conditions this season have set the vines up for success. or many, Winter is a time to bed down green spaces, to nurture beds and bulbs through the colder months, and to pack away garden furniture in favour of warmth and cover. At Wakehurst however, the frosty days and dark nights signal new surprises in the wild landscape. As darkness descends, Wakehurst’s winter spectacle truly comes alive. Glow Wild, the magical winter lantern trail weaving its way through the gardens, has become a fast favourite in the region, and this year marks a major milestone as we celebrate the 10th anniversary edition.

OCTOBER 2023 | Local interest Making Memories

Glow Wild has found its way into the hearts and traditions not only of the staff, but of people across the South East and beyond. In ten years it’s been a privilege for the Wakehurst team to witness special moments where visitors have chosen the trail as a place to create memories, from the wonder on young children’s faces as they soak in the incredible sensory experience, to the gathering of families spanning generations. For Louise, a standout moment “has to be the marriage proposal under the Tree of Life in 2021, we were all party to this big secret, sorting out champagne, photographers and tissues.” (She said yes!). Visitors to Glow Wild last year may have encountered a new arrival in the form of Percy the peacock puppet, who will return to entertain winter wanderers this year. Katherine is heartened by the responses she’s witnessed to her interactive creations: “I love seeing the delight on people’s faces when they are talking, feeding, dancing, or interacting with the puppets. If the pieces bring a smile or make them escape into another world for a moment or two, I feel my work is done.”

A Decade Of Delight

It’s certainly a remarkable achievement to have grown Glow Wild from a four-night event to an essential part of the Wakehurst calendar spanning 31 evenings, whilst maintaining it as an in-house operation. For both Katherine and Louise, it’s clear that this union of all the teams at Wakehurst to deliver the trail is what makes it special: “I love how Glow Wild touches all aspects of the gardens’ operation and all the relationships between the teams.” says Louise. “There is no limit to the imagination and ambition,” Katherine says. “I am proud to be part of a little slice of winter magic.” But what’s next? Looking to the future, Lorraine comments: “For me, I hope that Glow Wild continues to champion the tradition of craftsmanship and continues to be a well-loved family and community event for years to come.” The dedication and commitment that emanates from the three powerhouses behind the event leaves no doubt in our mind that Glow Wild will be a treat for the ages. Don’t miss: flexible tickets. You can now swap or upgrade your tickets up to 72 hours before your visit – available for new and existing bookings! Welcome home, Eric! And a huge, Henfield ‘thank you’ to everyone who made it happen…

Almost a year ago something unimaginable happened to the Williams family, something life-shattering, which has tested their resilience and given them a very different perspective on life. Here is the story of the past year of Eric’s life, we have been tasked by him to express his deep gratitude to everyone who has supported him since that day. Eric Williams is one of those people who you know you can always call on for help, who will be there without question and without any expectations. He doesn’t want thanks or publicity (however hard we have tried at BN5 in the past!) his quiet kindnesses over the years have made him the friend of many individuals in Henfield. You probably won’t know him personally, but chances are that one of his many acts of kindness will have made your life better. To list a few; he’s a volunteer at the B-P Guild, he’s Chairman of HART and a First Responder, formerly chairman of the Clarke’s Mead Trust (currently building the magnificent new Scout Community Centre), a very dedicated volunteer at the Henfield Haven and deliverer of Foodbank parcels. He’s always been there when a marquee 26 | BN5 Magazine

needs putting up, or someone needs practical help. His wife Sara is a similar person, heavily involved in the Haven and Guiding in Henfield. Both are retired, but probably a lot busier than most of us who work! In September last year, Eric was away on the annual B-P Guild holiday when he suffered a freak accident. He tripped in the street and fell; in the process he suffered a severe spinal injury with his fourth vertebrae compounded, leaving him with tetraplegic (commonly known as quadriplegic) paralysis. In layman’s terms, he has movement from his shoulders upwards only. The accident left him in hospital in Oxford, then Worthing, for a total of 97 long days, then a further seven months in Stoke Mandeville Spinal Injury Unit. None of us can imagine the pain and trauma sales@bn5magazine.co.uk

Eric and his family have been through over the last year, most of their experiences are best left unsaid. Readjusting to life with such limitations is an incredible challenge, let alone navigating a disjointed and obtuse ‘care’ and social system, which (even though it has the kindest people working in it) seems set up to scupper them at every turn. Sara turned into an expert not just on Eric’s medical condition, but on dealing with the services, NHS and council departments to get Eric home. Eric and Sara’s small home in Parsonage Road was transformed to accommodate Eric’s chair, to create a wet-room and accommodate hoists and an accessible bedroom for him downstairs, as well as an accessible garden. Once underway, the build happened over two months, ready for the fast-approaching deadline of Eric’s release from hospital. Their list of ‘thank yous’ is huge, so please forgive any omissions, below are a few people who made it happen. The build, project managed by Paul Mason (also a B-P Guildsman) with his architect, was cleverly done, they created a useable space when Sara couldn’t see a solution. Nigel Parson’s team of builders (Jason Knight, Gordon Reid, Alan Edwards) led by Adam Parsons, who went above

and beyond, often giving their time for free and negotiating supplier discounts, as well as giving a monetary donation. Supporting them were Mark Lawrence plasterer, LanMar electricals, Heat Sussex, MRL Grab & Tip and Sussex Readymix. Bob Cragg carpets and flooring, Andy Warren who worked his magic on the carpentry, Gardener & Scardifield who gave almost £1k in materials free of charge, Lawson’s merchants who gave all the timber at cost. Topps Tiles gave a large discount and Howdens in Shoreham discounted the doors. Thank you to those who gave their time to visit Eric in hospital and keep his spirits up, such as the B-P Guild and Hart members, Kaz who was there whatever the weather, Paul Crowe for the enormous Jogathon fundraising effort. Their friends at the Henfield Haven who fundraised with raffles and quiz nights and Lilly’s beautiful handmade pots, the Trefoil Guild for their fundraising coffee morning and all the clubs, family and friends who created a Christmas video for Eric to send messages of love during a very dark time, when he was trapped in hospital over Christmas. The 63 supporters on the progress WhatsApp group who watched Eric’s determination and matched it with their support. BN5 Magazine | 27

“...don’t put off what you can do today - tell people how you are grateful, and live life.” For them both, they are grateful for close-knit family who kept them sane, daughters Victoria and Alexandra who carry on the tradition of ‘getting on with it’; Eric’s brothers and Sara’s sisters; the close friends who were a shoulder to cry on, Mary Simmonds and Ruth Robotham, for whom no challenge or small task was too much. Their help and acts of kindness smoothed the wheels and made it all bearable. All these individuals, groups and businesses, alongside the incredible team of nurses, specialists, physios and carers, gave their support without question – each and every one contributed to the team effort. To those friends, strangers and kind people who donated what they could – your generosity was unexpected and is met with huge gratitude. A huge thank you to Henfield as a whole!

Sara’s dedication paid off at the end of August, when Eric finally came home. This is just the start, and they have no idea what’s round the corner, as none of us do. Eric’s advice is valuable – don’t put off what you can do today - tell people how you are grateful, and live life. The word ‘inspirational’ is overused these days, but there really is no other word for the Williams family, never wavering in their determination to get Eric as well as he can be and back home in Henfield. Eric has seen the darkest of times; but has also experienced huge kindnesses from friends and strangers. Finally, please take a look at the photo of Sara and Eric, which speaks a thousand words. As John Lennon said, it’s simple. Love is the answer.

Emma Cole

A small request... Although Eric and Sara are reluctant to continue fundraising, at BN5 we absolutely know that an adapted vehicle will broaden Eric’s horizons and allow him some simple pleasures to get him through life, especially a trip to his beloved Amex as a life-long Albion fan. Please do consider a small donation if you can, thank you. 28 | BN5 Magazine

Henfield Community Partnership T

he Henfield Community Partnership (HCP) was set up in 2005 and brings together volunteers to support a wide range of activities to enhance the wellbeing of the village and its surroundings. Volunteering for the Partnership is an ideal way to get to know your local community better, but don’t just take our word for it, this is what new committee member Dawn has to say about it: What motivated you to join HCP? “I moved to the area last summer, having taken early retirement from a busy travel career and was looking for a bit of a hobby. In October I checked the Horsham District Voluntary Sector volunteering website and came across the Henfield Computer Club. Now I’m no IT geek but part of my career involved coaching and training so I got in touch to see if I could help. This is where I met Sue Willis and the team who were incredibly welcoming and friendly. Sue soon introduced me to the work she does for the Henfield Community Partnership and I just wanted to help her so joined the HCP committee in February this year.”

36 | BN5 Magazine

Have you made new friends or discovered new things through your membership? “I’ve met so many lovely friendly people through the Computer Club and HCP and some of these have become firm friends too. I rarely walk through the village without bumping into someone I now know which is so lovely. I’ve even introduced friends to the village and they come and have a stall once a month at the Monday Market.” Is there something which you’ve been involved with which has had a positive impact for others? “Three things really stand out for me: Firstly, the closure of Budgens, which gave me the opportunity to connect with several of the local businesses. This really reinforced to me the importance of shopping locally and why HCP wanted to put the directory together to share with the village. The businesses were so open to ideas and the idea then evolved with help from BN5 and HDC to create a pull out booklet – this was just incredible.” www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

OCTOBER 2023 | Local interest “Secondly, meeting passionate locals who were keen to create the Henfield Walking Group and share their knowledge and the beauty and history of this wonderful village.” “However, The best part so far, was working with Sue to host the ‘Get Involved’ event at the Henfield Hall to support the various clubs and societies. We had over 50 exhibitors and just under 300 visitors through the doors which was brilliant. The support in getting the event off the ground was incredible with so much willingness to help. This has given the partnership a great platform to continue supporting the clubs and charities as they do so much for the community.” Have you used skills from your working life / previous jobs in a positive way to help HCP? “That’s a resounding yes! I’m quite an organised and service driven person and my career was incredibly busy and varied which meant I’ve been able to tap into a variety of skills. For instance, my technical and coaching knowledge with the Computer Club and helping the Museum create their new poster in the library car park. My communication skills for the various newsletters we create, my event/project planning experience for the Get Involved day and my passion to help people has lead me to offer services to the Girl Guides and Self Help Group.” Have you had any positive moments you can share? “There’s been a few actually... At the Computer Club there was one lady who had bought a new iPad and having spent four hours in the Apple Store with a ‘genius’ she came home totally confused with her old and new iPad and couldn’t make either work. We spent an hour together setting the new one up to suit what she needed and wiping the old one. The relief and smile on her face when we were done was so rewarding. Another is where I’ve managed to help a lady streamline her outgoings so that she is getting better value and making her hard earned pension go further, especially with the cost of living crisis.” Have you mastered any new skills? “Learning to say no.... nope still not mastered that one! However every day is a learning day and being involved in the Partnership presents various new challenges. I often find myself saying ‘I can help with that’ and then thinking ‘How am I going to do that?’ It pushes me outside of my comfort zone and although that can be a bit scary at times it is so very rewarding. Some of my new skills include learning how to edit the Computer Club website, how to create QR codes, sharing opportunities on social media and understanding how a charitable organisation is run. I am so grateful for the opportunities and friendships that Henfield has given me.”

About us... Henfield Community Partnership (HCP) brings together volunteers to support a wide range of community projects. HCP members aim to work together on issues and projects of interest and concern to Henfield and its surrounding communities, in order to secure its long term viability as a centre for social, business and cultural activities, and to maintain its particular character and heritage. early morning browse of the market, while its championing of a sustainable fashion boutique is also gaining popularity. With a focus on the local, Henfield Weekly Market is very proud of championing of local artisans. It provides a supportive environment for small enterprises that work and live within a 10 mile radius with a view towards enabling them to grow larger. Henfield Weekly Market also upholds and supports numerous local charities through its resale of donated items and over the past two years a total sum of £5,000 has been donated. From the homeless to the Haven, and from felines to food bank, over 25 different local and national charities have been supported – an incredible achievement! The organisers are especially thankful of the goodwill, both in giving, but also in purchasing items of interest by all patrons of the market.

Pains & Needles Cricket. It’s more complicated than marmite because it’s not just about love or hate, it’s also about understanding what the point of it is. Even when you think you understand that, it still doesn’t always make sense. For example, why do Australia get to keep the Ashes when they drew the series 2-2? My enjoyment of cricket has grown steadily over the years – especially since our two boys have very much grasped the point of cricket and this summer has been dominated by the sport (when it hasn’t been raining!). There have been plenty of practice sessions in the garden, and like many a father, I found myself reminiscing about the good old days of schoolboy cricket as I sent some loose deliveries down to a slightly disappointed 11 and 9 year old. However, unexpectedly, dreams became reality when I idly mentioned my whimsical aspirations whilst in the beer garden of the Royal Oak in Wineham. Having called my own bluff, I ended up in a pre-season net-session – the one opportunity to prepare for the list of compelling pub vs pub fixtures over the summer. After a 2 hour evening session of batting and bowling, I felt that I had roughly remembered what I was about and went to bed dreaming of the time I bowled out Andrew Long in an U12 match. Many years ago, I got whiplash when someone drove into the back of the 50cc scooter that I was riding to work. When I woke up the morning after the net session, all thoughts of the “yorker” to Andrew Long evaporated and were replaced by a general sensation of pain which made the previous whiplash feel more like a gentle massage. To boot, all the muscles between my ribs ached to the point where if could have opted out of breathing, I would have happily done so!

It turned out that my body was somewhat behind my brain when it came to re-living my youth and despite taking a load of pain relief, I found myself walking around like an inflexible version of Frankenstein. I was thinking a trip to the osteopath may be in order, when my wife, Annelise suggested some acupuncture. To be honest, if she’d told me that sticking a leach in my right ear and purging myself with castor oil would have helped, I probably would have done it; and given that practice on humans was part of her veterinary acupuncture training, I was more than prepared to give it a go. Despite being a wimp with needles, I can testify that it doesn’t hurt a bit and thankfully I felt some near instant relief as a result. This brings me neatly onto the fact that our veterinary surgeon, Rebecca East, has recently completed a course in veterinary acupuncture, so we are very pleased to be offering this service again both at the practice and also as part of our discount home visit service - if you would prefer Rebecca to come to you. Acupuncture is defined as the insertion of needles into specific points on the body to produce a healing response. It works by stimulating the body’s repair mechanisms, regulating inflammation and causing the release of natural endorphins and opiods. It’s most common indication is the relief of pain and muscle spasms, but there are many other indications such as gastrointestinal disease, skin problems and epilepsy to name a few. It is very safe in animals and has all the same benefits as it does in humans. It can be performed in the conscious animal and is excellent to help manage pain – particularly in arthritic pets. Feel free to contact us if you are interested or would like more information. As for me, other than a slight issue putting my seatbelt on the next day, I was nearly fully functional, although cricket was off the menu for a week! Jonathan Underwood

ats are the only mammals on the planet capable of powered flight, and they can navigate through the darkest night by the power of echolocation. Across the globe they are vital pollinators, valuable pest-controllers and even effective tree-planters. There are 1,300 different species worldwide and they can be found almost everywhere but the frozen north and south poles. Here in the UK there are 18 different species of bat and all of them have been recorded in Sussex. Sadly, many of our bat species are rare and the rarest of all is the Greater Mouse-eared Bat. Since 2002, Sussex has been home to the only UK population: a single individual who faithfully roosts in the same secret location every winter. He was nicknamed the loneliest bat in Britain and was almost certainly the last of his kind living here – until the exciting discovery in January this year of a second individual hibernating in the same system of underground tunnels. Happily, the Greater Mouse-eared Bat is now less lonely and slightly less rare but still our largest resident bat species, with a wingspan of 45 cm – about the same as a Starling. At the other end of the spectrum are the commonest bat species, the Pipistrelles, which

are so tiny they can fit inside a matchbox. Pipistrelles can be seen in gardens, parks and urban green spaces where they are sometimes mistaken for small birds flitting about at dusk. They first leave their roosts about twenty minutes after sunset, flying fast, low, and seemingly erratically as they zig-zag after their insect prey. Despite their diminutive size, Pipistrelles have a healthy appetite and will each devour 3,000 flies, midges, and mosquitoes in a single night, catching and eating their food on the wing. If you were to listen in with a bat detector, you’d discover that some Pipistrelles emit their rapidfire echolocation calls at a much higher frequency, which distinguishes the Common Pipistrelle from the higher-pitched Soprano Pipistrelle. Like all our bat species, Pipistrelles rely on flying insects but as the bounty of the summer months diminishes and autumn shifts towards winter, food is harder to come by and bats prepare to hibernate. Pipistrelles are small enough to tuck themselves into tiny cracks and crevices in trees or buildings, where they often go completely unnoticed until they emerge in spring - the secret stars of the night sky.

Estate Planning Paul Samrah, Henfield resident and partner at Chartered Accountants Moore Kingston Smith LLP, provides some valuable Inheritance Tax (IHT) advice. It is important to plan ahead to mitigate IHT and ensure your wealth passes to your beneficiaries efficiently. Planning ahead enables you to set out clearly who should get what from your Estate on your death. It also means you can maximise IHT reliefs and exemptions should your Estate be worth more than the IHT threshold or ‘nil-rate band’ when you die (currently frozen at £325,000).
