Editor’s Letter It’s November again. The passing of the years sees fewer Henfield veterans of WWII attending our Remembrance Parade and Wreath Laying. It’s always humbling and interesting to speak with these smartly dressed gentlemen who wear their polished medals with pride. The sadness and reflection of the two minute silence, which we spend remembering the young men who had their futures stolen, is honoured impeccably by these men who understand their sacrifice the most. After the Reveille sounds, it feels as if the energy returns. We stand outside the Henfield Club with a warming drink or perhaps a tot of rum. A moment to celebrate life and remember how lucky we are to live in a peaceful country when so much of the world is at war. This year, we will especially miss Bob Reynolds, who died in September. Always smiling, Bob was a pleasure to chat to. He was very proud of his great-granddaughters, who were marching with the Henfield Brownies last year when I took this photo of them outside the Henfield Club. Bob was a champion Poppy Collector, always with the heaviest tin (on occasion, he filled more than one in an afternoon outside Budgens). He’ll be missed enormously. Please raise a glass to him this Remembrance, if it happens to be rum he would very much approve.

Everyone can use the Henfield EV Community Car Club!
The Club is open to everyone, so if you’d like to try an EV this is an ideal opportunity! Vehicles can be hired for self-drive, or you can arrange a volunteer driver if required. Vehicles are adapted so suit those with less abilities. To become a member of the Henfield Electrical community car club contact Catherine on either 01273 087096 between 10am – 2pm or email henfield@heccc.org.uk for an application form. On receiving the application form it will be processed and once the driving licence check has been completed a driving assessment/ familiarisation of the vehicles will be conducted and you’ll all be good to go. To hire one of the three vehicles now available to the community on a self-drive hire you will need to call or email to check availability. We will then take your booking and email you confirmation and details of where the vehicles are and where the keys can be collected from. If you require a volunteer driver the process is still the same, just allow time for a volunteer drive to be sourced. You will then be contacted with who your driver will be. All our volunteers are local Henfield residents and fully committed to helping the local community to enable members of the car club who cannot drive the ability to attend social activities and medical appointments with a sense of independence. All volunteers are DBS checked.
Seed Swap
Now that autumn is upon us and gardens are being put to bed, this is the perfect time for gathering seeds in time for the seed swap next year. All sorts of seeds can be harvested from the gardens, preferably on a dry day, but even if the seeds are a bit damp, they can be dried out at home. Once they are dry and put in separate envelopes clearly marked with the name of the seed, it is important to store in a cool dry place. I always keep mine in a biscuit tin in the spare bedroom which seems to work well. Luckily, I have quite a few biscuit tins! The Seed Swap will be arranged for a date in February (to be arranged), and you can then exchange your own seeds for any others that you want, and save yourself a lot of money! Happy gathering!

Fundraising for Tommy’s
Thank you to the local community for supporting my fundraising which was featured in BN5 Magazine earlier this year. I managed to raise over £,2870 for Tommy‘s with the help of many, many, people. The event itself was quite a challenge (having to run up 42 floors on a very hot day in full fire-fighting kit), but the zip wire across to the other skyscraper was amazing! I’m so grateful for all who donated and couldn’t have done this without their help.

Can you help find the oldest trees in Sussex?
A new project to restore and protect ancient woodlands across the Low Weald and Downs is looking for volunteers to help locate all the area’s ancient trees. The Lost Woods project, supported by a £2m grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, is looking for volunteers and community groups across Sussex to join a team who will receive training in identifying ancient trees and making records of their condition. They are also appealing to the public to send in sightings of old trees within the project area, including those in their own gardens. The project covers 314 square kilometres, spanning
from Lewes in the east to Storrington in the west, and volunteers will be asked to survey 1sq km patches at a time in the search for ancient or veteran trees. Lost Woods project manager, Sarah Williams, said: “Across Sussex and the UK, we don’t know where all our ancient trees are and so we can’t protect those facing threats from development. Most ancient trees don’t have any legal protection, even though they’re really important living habitats and they’re often beloved local landmarks.” Using the ancient tree locations, the Lost Woods team will identify land that can be planted with new trees or left to naturally regenerate so that some of Sussex’s ancient woodlands can be reconnected. This will create new nature corridors and strengthen habitats. The project team will also work with landowners on plans to restore ancient trees. All records will be added to the national Ancient and Veteran Tree Inventory, which is available to the public, planners, developers, and ecologists to help identify where our most important trees are located. To sign up as a volunteer to map ancient trees or tell the team about an ancient tree in your garden or on land you own, visit www.lostwoods.org.uk.

Wilder Ouse
Sussex Wildlife Trust is delighted to announce the official launch of ‘Wilder Ouse’ – a project bringing together people across the Ouse River Catchment to help restore nature at the heart of its landscapes and livelihoods of the community. Wilder Ouse will support local people and communities to make a meaningful contribution to tackling climate change and reversing the decline of important wildlife and natural resources. It will focus on helping others to deliver nature-based solutions to the impacts of climate change, looking at flooding and drought, and building a resilient and healthy Nature Recovery Network at a landscape scale. The project plans to deliver numerous benefits for people and wildlife, as well as increasing awareness of the benefits that wildlife provides with nature-led recovery at the heart of its work. This will include creating wildlife corridors, natural habitat restoration and exploring the potential to restore keystone species such as Beavers. It will also be supporting the delivery of the ‘Weald to Waves’ Initiative. Over the next few months, Wilder Ouse Project Officer Lydia Baxter will be meeting local people with a view to working with them and leading some of our first nature recovery projects across the catchment. This project expands on previous work carried out by the Sussex Flow Initiative. Wilder Ouse is a partnership project. Partners include the Environment Agency, the Woodland Trust and Lewes District Council. If you would like to become involved with the project you can contact us via wilderouse@sussexwt.org.uk (Photo credits: Eurasian Beaver © David Parkyn, Lydia Baxter © Emma Chaplin).

A Henfield Hero’s D-Day experiences
On the ridge about 20 feet above the beach was a German machine gun nest and from its elevated position it began firing on the craft as it landed. Dad had to move forward from his position under cover at the rear of the vessel to where the ramp control switch gear was housed in a locker adjacent to the ramp. He described the bullets ricocheting around the craft and pinging off the ob Bedford was well known in Henfield. armoured vehicles as he moved forward but he After he retired to the village he was a managed to avoid getting hit. Once he opened regular spectator at the football club the metal door of the locker to access the switch and he took on much of the maintenance of the controls he was able to take cover behind it and cricket pavilion. He was also the unofficial leader lower the landing ramp. As the armoured vehicles of the Monday walking group. Less well known, began to roll off the craft onto the beach, the however, was his military past. German machine gunners leapt up from their position and all surrendered. Bob was conscripted into the Royal Navy in 1943 and on 6 June 1944 he was one of many However Dad and his shipmates were not out of who sailed across the channel to take part in danger yet as German Artillery were firing along the D-Day landings. Before he died in 2016, Bob the beach and on either side of their landing spoke in depth of his D Day experiences with his craft with the shells “bracketing” the craft as son Paul, who shares them with us here. the German gunners “zeroed in”. He described “Dad’s Tank Landing Craft was in the vanguard of the Skipper of their boat as a “keen type” who was determined to be “on time and on target”. the boats landing on Juno beach with elements On their run in to the beach the Skipper was of Canadian Armoured units. His job was that literally at full speed when they hit the beach in of ‘Wireman’ (or electrician as it would be now order to be in an optimum position to off load known) and his responsibility was to lower the the armoured vehicles. As the last vehicle was landing ramp of the craft once they had landed on the beach to enable the armoured units to get unloaded they tried to winch themselves off the beach but the steel cable attached to the anchor onto the beach and “get into the fight”.

Bob with fellow veteran Frank Skilton, pictured in 2006
Paul and Lyndsey Bedford, Bob’s son and granddaughter, at the 2022 Henfield Remembrance parade
parted and they were left stranded on the beach with no way of getting off and still under German fire. Crew from another landing craft in the same flotilla saw the predicament of Dad’s boat and came back to shore to tow them off the beach until they were able to float, where both boats made a hasty retreat. Historians have revealed that a large number of men were killed or wounded by German gunfire when they were close to the beach, yet Dad’s craft had been a “beached sitting duck” and yet had astonishingly survived, as had the other craft that came to their rescue – a miracle on D Day? Dad didn’t tell me this story until he was in his later years when he started to talk more about his experiences. I took him back to Normandy on an organised coach tour with other veterans and their carers. With typical British reserve, when the journey started, none of the veterans were talking to each other. However eventually they began to talk amongst themselves, strangers yet ‘brothers in arms’. Those accompanying the veterans remained quiet, listening to the “Old Boys” recount their experiences, in awe of what these men had been through. On the journey there was a screening of the film ‘Saving Private Ryan’. During the screening no one spoke and when the film finished there was complete silence for a few minutes before one veteran spoke up and said with typically British understatement: “It was a bit like that wasn’t it?” to which there was a murmur of consensus: “Yes, it was like that.” I have never forgotten this.”
Légion d’honneur In addition to his British military medals, Bob was appointed to the rank of Chevalier in the Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur by the French state on 1 September 2016, just 23 days before his death at the age of 92. His appointment letter expresses the ongoing gratitude of the French nation to British heroes such as Bob: “I offer you my warmest congratulations on this high honour in recognition of your acknowledged military engagement and your steadfast involvement in the Liberation during the Second World War. As we contemplate this Europe of peace, we must never forgot the heroes like you, who came from Britain and the Commonwealth to begin the liberation of Europe by liberating France. We owe our freedom and security to your dedication, because you were ready to risk your life.”

Pedal for Henfield: Finished! A
huge thank you to everyone involved in the Pedal for Henfield in September 2023! The challenge was completed and 13 cyclists completed the gruelling South Downs Way over the weekend of 2nd /3rd September and many people took part in 10 sponsored spinathons which took place at the Henfield Leisure Centre. All in all an amazing £8,000 has been raised in total! Tanya Woodward said: “The Southdown Way Challenge was a real test, both physically and mentally, but our amazing team of riders and support kept us motivated to conquer those hills, and there were many!” Gail Way said: “This was a challenging ride and something I’ll never forget! Steep hills, rough terrain and ruts, but the views over the Downs
01273 494002
were incredible and it was fun cycling with a great team.” Spinner Rosie Lee was one of the 7 super spinners who did all 10 spin classes: “I loved being part of the team that did all day at the spinathon raising valuable funds for our community leisure centre. My second one! Such a fab team and feel honoured to be able to take part as the leisure centre is a big part of mine and my family’s lives. We all use it and would be lost without it. I would do it all again in a heartbeat.” Thanks also go to all those who supported the event including Leisure Centre Staff, support crew and of course corporate sponsors – they couldn’t have done it without you!

Richard Bates,Henfield resident and consultant solicitor at Cognitive Law in Brighton, comments on the new Powers of Attorney Bill. Lasting powers of attorney (‘LPAs’) are documents by which you can delegate decision making to other people. They are termed ‘lasting’ because they can continue after the loss of mental capacity. The Health & Care LPA can only be used when you have lost capacity to make a decision. However, the Property and Finances LPA can be used to delegate, whether or not you have capacity. On the 16th September 2023, the new Powers of Attorney Bill received Royal Assent and, amongst other things, aims to make the process of signing LPAs easier. Secondary legislation is required to effect the changes, but the most noteworthy change is that it will be possible to make and sign LPAs electronically, albeit that one can still use paper versions. Measures have been introduced to better protect against fraud and abuse, including allowing the Office of the Public Guardian (‘OPG’) to check the identity of those involved in the LPA. There is also a change in the registration of LPAs. It is important to understand that LPAs can only be used once they have been registered with the OPG. Currently, the donor (the person giving the power) or the attorney(s) can register an LPA. This will change so that only the donor can register his or her LPA. There will now be a single route for all objections to the registration of an LPA, including objections from third parties. This is so that relevant individuals or institutions can bring up concerns if they feel that the LPA isn’t appropriate or may put the donor at risk. At present, there is only limited scope for objections to be made. Digital Office Copies (produced by the OPG) will also help with the management of the donor’s affairs in an increasingly digital world. LPAs are really important because they give you the choice as to who makes decisions on your behalf, if you can’t do so yourself. It’s also important to appreciate that, if decisions are needed and there is no LPA, the only course of action is an application to the Court of Protection for a ‘deputyship’, which typically costs thousands of pounds and can take over a year to be put in place – definitely not ideal if you are already in a health crisis and need urgently to access funds.
If you need assistance with powers of attorney or long-term care planning and wealth protection, please get in touch on 01273 284012 or richard.bates@cognitivelaw.co.uk. Henfield Theatre Company believe
there’s no place like Oz
F
ollowing the fun we had on Treasure Island a few years ago this festive season sees Henfield Theatre Company and its Youth Theatre join forces in a wonderful magical production of The Wizard of Oz pantomime, like you’ve never seen it before. Dorothy and all her friends follow the yellow brick road in mad cap adventures to help them escape the evil clutches of the Wicked Witch. With familiar characters, plus some new, they will be singing along as they travel to the Emerald City and the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Along with new characters, there will be unexpected songs to catch you out, and maybe even some rapping! A challenge for our musical director, Dave Barnett, but he is braver than the lion and up for the challenge. Refreshing and fun, with comedy and your usual pantomime dame, it’s a ‘no-brainer’. Henfield Theatre Company has strong traditions of great family pantomimes so the bar is set high. The director Karen Blunden is known for her starring roles in many productions but is also the hugely popular director of our Youth Theatre productions. Karen said: “The Wizard of Oz is a fabulous show to bring together the wide age range, skills, experience and abilities of all our members … from our 92-year-old ‘lumberjack’ down to our teenage all-dancing, singing magical

trees of the Enchanted Forest! With rehearsals well and truly underway, it’s proving a treat and a privilege to be working alongside such a fun, talented, vibrant bunch of ‘Ozzers’ and I have no doubt that the effervescence of the cast will bubble and fizz its way down the yellow brick road into the hearts and minds of our audiences. So please come and join us this Christmas time ‘somewhere over the rainbow’ and although we can’t promise ‘all the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true’ we CAN be sure you’ll ‘laugh your day away in the Merry Old Land of Oz’!” Kindly sponsored by The Wheatsheaf pub, why not enjoy pre-show drinks and dinner before coming to enjoy the show? Performances are on 11th and 12th January at 7.30pm at The Henfield Hall, and, by popular demand, two matinees are scheduled for 13th January at 1.30pm and 5.30pm to cater for our younger audiences. Tickets cost £13 per person for floor seating and £15 per person for raised seating. On sale now via www.henfieldtheatrecompany.com and at Steven’s Estate Agents in Henfield High Street.

Christmas Parties & Gifts If you are planning a Christmas party for your staff, don’t let the taxman crush your festive spirits! Paul Samrah advises how to celebrate in style. A staff party paid for by an employer technically counts as a benefit in kind on which employees are taxed. However there are two exemptions that allow employers to host the event without it being treated as a taxable benefit. The first exemption applies where the cost per head is no more than £150. For this to apply, the event must be generally open to all and not be exclusive to a particular group. However, events based on separate working locations or departments of employees are allowed, if generally available to all employees within the location or department. Unless the principle of generality is achieved, then the full amount is taxable against the employees who attended. For example, an event exclusively for directors which excluded employees would not qualify for the exemption. Employers may organise more than one annual event and all such events may qualify for relief as long as the cost per head, in any one tax year, does not exceed £150 in aggregate. For example, if two events are held, one costing £120 per head and the second £40 per head, the total £150 limit has been breached. In this case, the whole of the first event will fall within the £150 exemption, but none of the second. The second event costing £40 may be covered by a tax relief relating to trivial benefits. This relief allows employers to provide employees with any number of benefits provided that the cost of each is less than £50, the benefit is not cash or a cash voucher, there is no contractual entitlement to the benefit, and the benefit is not specifically provided in recognition of services performed by the employee. If only one event is held in the year and the sum spent is more than £150 per head, then the full amount spent will become liable to income tax and national insurance (NI) for both staff and employer alike. It is not possible to combine the two regimes to give a combined limit of £200 towards a single event. It is taxed as a benefit, which could bring a nasty chill in the New Year. When planning your event and estimating the tax implications, remember that the price per head is calculated on the total number of attendees; that is all staff, their partners and any clients, 60 | BN5 Magazine
and not just employees. Secondly, make sure you include all incidental costs. This means adding up not just the venue hire and catering costs but all the other things, such as entertainment fees, taxi fares, overnight accommodation and any VAT charged (regardless of whether or not you are VAT registered). Divide the total cost of each function by the total number of people (including nonemployees) who attend, in order to arrive at the cost per head. If an HMRC enquiry is launched, you will need to provide details of all the costs and attendees. Beware of trying to apply HMRC’s concession to ordinary staff entertaining. You need to hold an event that is clearly a formally organised function. Some employers also make the mistake of charging the party to entertainment in the accounts, then forgetting that an event worth over £150 per head must be disclosed on the P11D. There are potentially harsh penalties for incorrect completion of the forms as well as corporation tax implications. It is worth remembering that although VAT on entertainment is not reclaimable, VAT on staff parties can be reclaimed, even if it exceeds £150 per head. This is an extra Christmas bonus not to be overlooked! Turning to staff gifts from an employer, HMRC do accept nowadays that minor gifts may be provided tax-free for employees. There is no statutory de minimis limit, so care is needed. For instance an employer may provide employees with a seasonal gift, such as a turkey, a bottle of wine or a box of chocolates at Christmas. All of these gifts are considered to be trivial and are as such not taxable. Where there are a large number of employees, the total cost of providing a gift to each employee may be considerable, but where the gift to each employee is a trivial benefit, this principle applies regardless of the total cost to the employer and the number of employees concerned. If the gift extends beyond the trivial, i.e. from a bottle or two of wine to a case, from a turkey to a Christmas hamper, you should take advice as it is likely to be treated as a sales@bn5magazine.co.uk
taxable benefit in kind. As a consequence, unless the cost is shown on the employee’s P11d (and the employee pays the tax accordingly) the employer will need to enter into a PAYE settlement agreement with HMRC. The employer will also have a Class 1A (or 1B) NI liability. If the gift comprises non-cash vouchers, the Class 1A NI liability would transfer to a Class 1 NI liability, meaning both employees and employers would be liable. The cost to the employer of providing the vouchers would need to be added to the employee’s gross pay in the pay period that the vouchers were provided, to enable the calculation and deduction of Class 1 NI to be made. Cash presents, such as Christmas bonuses or vouchers redeemable for cash will require tax and NI contributions to be paid through the PAYE system. Finally, if you are considering making Christmas gifts to customers or clients, beware there is a £50 limit in any one tax year. The gift must be a business related gift, e.g. a calendar, clock or pen. It must clearly carry an advertisement for your business; otherwise it will be classed as entertainment expenditure and will be disallowed. Enjoy the party season!
