Tony Bishop’s Record Breaking Walk

Editor’s Letter Welcome to the January issue of BN5, which should arrive with you between Christmas and New Year. A perfect time to look for some ideas for those New Year Resolutions; if you turn to page 16 you’ll find the story of Tony Bishop’s inspiring walk, and on page 24 you can find out why local Adventureholic Neil Laughton thinks we should push ourselves out of our comfort zones! On the theme of biodiversity and the environment, take a look on page 35 to read how you can get your everyday items repaired (cutting landfill deposits) at the very popular Henfield Repair Cafe, and find out more about Henfield Parish Council’s Year of Biodiversity on page 29. We’ll be following this biodiversity theme all year and promoting all the events planned in the village, please watch this space! Finally, we’d like to say an enormous thank you to everyone who has advertised with us in 2023, and to the clubs, groups and individuals who have kept us supplied with interesting articles. Most importantly thanks to YOU for continuing to read BN5 and for using our website, it’s really appreciated. Happy New Year!

Henfield Tree Planting

In December 2023 10 flowering cherry trees were planted in Flower Farm Close – many residents there wanted to see some tree shade and blossom in this street. Over a hundred years ago this street was part of Henfield Flower Farm Nursery. Henfield Parish Council sponsored seven of the trees, and SH2030 and the Garden Club sponsored the remaining three. Thank you all for bringing blossom and shade to this street! The 25 street trees planted last winter are thriving, thanks to the watering efforts from neighbours in Upper and Lower Station Road, Lower Faircox, Staples Barn, Broomfield and Wantley – thank you to all the tree champions. Earlier in the year we got permission to carry out plantings that would be beneficial to nature on Saxon Weald verges at Wantley Hill. We were delighted when Rampion Wind Energy awarded us the funds to do this work and SH2030 agreed to act as the official body to receive the funds in order to fulfil the grant criteria. On a crisp November Sunday volunteers did great work in planting 10 apple trees, all staked and protected from animals. The trees are old British varieties and some are purely Sussex apples. Finally, if anyone wants to see a new tree near them contact us (treesfor2022@btinternet.com 07786 390448) to see about taking this forward. Happy New year!

News | JANUARY 2024 The picture shows a Fieldfare, one of our winter visitors. It is the size of a Blackbird but is grey and white with a reddish chest and makes a chuckling noise. Fieldfares fly over from Russia and Scandinavia and can be seen feeding in open fields and feasting on winter berries in trees and bushes. If you put apples on your lawn they may come down to feed as they also eat fallen fruit. In 2024 Henfield Birdwatch will be 25 years old. We plan to celebrate this in various ways and further details will follow.

Henfield Scout Community Centre Building Appeal

A four-month delay in the supply of doors and windows caused an unwanted pause to the completion of the shell building in 2023, which in turn delayed the floor screed and finish, internal fit-out and PV Solar panel installation. Hopefully everything is now back on track and the building will be ready for occupation by September 2024 and allow the Scouts to return to Henfield for their meetings. In true DIY SOS style we are appealing to local tradesmen and building supply companies for help with the internal fit-out. Electricians, plumbers, plasterers, carpenters, builders, airconditioning engineers, decorators and flooring experts… we need your skills! Several companies and tradesmen have already committed to helping but we really do need more help. Limited companies can claim tax benefits for donating goods and services, so you can help yourselves whilst helping the community. If you’re able to offer some help or materials please email David. malkin@henfield-scout-cc.org or phone 07929 840321. All help will be truly appreciated. The BP Guild will be collecting and recycling Christmas Trees on Saturday 6 January 2024 for £10 per tree so book yours in for collection now if you haven’t already done so. Heads Up… parents look out for more information and posters regarding our very own 500 Words competition for children and young people aged 5 to 16 years old, planned to take place in February and judged by avid-reader Eric Williams. You will also need to have your team ready for our Fun Quiz on 24 February. 2024

Sophia’s international Girlguiding trip to Japan 2024

My name is Sophia, I am a 14 year old Ranger in Girlguiding UK and I currently volunteer at a local Brownie unit. I have been selected for LaSER (London and the South East Region) ‘Discover Japan’ international Girlguiding trip, in August 2024, for which I aim to fundraise £3,000. An experience of a lifetime, which I am really excited to be a part of, it will give me a chance to gain independence in international travel within a supportive environment, nurtured by the leaders and supported by my teammates. I will develop my skills in researching, planning and financial budgeting as we are working together to plan the whole trip including where we want to visit, how we are going to get there and where we are going to sleep! We will be working as a team to discuss our plans, make key decisions, overcome unexpected challenges and form lifelong friendships. I am looking forward to exploring Japan and learning about a new culture, which will give me a greater respect, understanding and appreciation that will impact my future and the way I see the world. I have devised an extensive fundraising plan including craft sales, sponsored events, car boot sales and a quiz night. All the money fundraised and donated will be used to support this trip and the associated costs. I have set up a Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/page/ sophia-smith-1699561450444. Thank you for taking the time to read about my adventure.

Congratulations to Grommets

Congratulations to Joanne Boorsma and the team at Grommets for the completion of their new unit and offices at Grommets, Holland’s Lane. The building was officially opened by founder Sidney Wells’ sister Shirley Bliss on what would have been his 88th birthday (pictured here with Joanne and her cousin Stuart McLean, who helped Grommets Ltd to achieve their ISO 9001 accreditation in 2009). Sidney founded the company in 1993 after many years in the rubber moulding and grommet industry and moved to Henfield in 1998. The company is in safe family hands with his daughter Joanne at the helm, as well as other family members including granddaughter Charlotte. The build has been a ‘labour of love’ – work started in February 2023 after an extensive planning process and the business has continued to operate in the existing engineering factory next door throughout the process. This extra space gives Grommets the chance to expand, the company currently employs 14 full time staff, many local to Henfield. Office Manager Charlotte Lane said: “A huge thank you goes to mum (Joanne) who has driven the project forward and thrown all her energy into it. The lovely building is a credit to her passion, vision and hard work. We’d also like to thank our staff and the great team of builders at CCI Gatwick who completed the project on time and to a very high standard for us.”

JANUARY 2024 | News drinking, such as markets, ice skating or watching Christmas films can be even more joyous. We know it’s not always possible to avoid social settings where others are drinking, and no-one wants to feel as though they’re missing out on the fun. Instead, why not treat yourself to a mocktail or steaming hot choc? Deciding not to drink alcohol is a personal choice and doesn’t need justifying to those around you. Our team of trained Alcohol Advisors can work with to improve your drinking habits, whether that means cutting it out all together or simply cutting back. This is a free and confidential service for adults in the Horsham District and usually involves 6-8 weekly sessions either in person or over the phone. Andy recently worked with our team to improve his relationship with alcohol. ‘I was drinking 3 bottles of wine a week. I went to the doctors about something unrelated, and they suggested I contact the Wellbeing service… It’s a very relaxed environment, and it has helped me a ton. I wish I’d made contact before, and not tried to do it on my own!’

Many of you know Fritz from her regular position on Henfield High Street. What you might not know is that she is available for labouring work including clearing out garages and sheds. Festive Henfield Artisan Market success! 2023 Poppy Appeal

Despite the almost unceasingly wet weather during the collecting period this year, our area still managed to raise the extremely respectable sum of almost £6,600. I would like to thank everyone who was so generous in these times of difficulty. A particular vote of thanks must go to Dave Lancaster who collected in the village over several days and managed to fill four collecting tins to the top, raising over £1,000! A spectacular achievement Dave, thank you again!

Tony Bishop’s Record Breaking Walk I met Tony on a chilly November day over coffee at the Post House Café. This bright and cheerful octogenarian hadn’t needed any downtime since returning from his 874-mile walk from John O’Groats to Land’s End, in fact he said that he would’ve happily walked another 15 mile stint the day after completing his extraordinary journey! He was full of stories of the people he met along the way, the magnificent landscapes and how he kept motivated during the 62 days walking. So many stories that this article is just an introduction; you can read more on our website, where we will shortly be publishing his walk diary. As with many challenges, the inspiration behind Tony’s came from a book. He read the wonderful ‘Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry’ which has since been made into a film starring Jim Broadbent and Penelope Wilton. The book is a powerful story of hope in adversity, and Tony’s experience very much echoed the theme of the power of human connections in the book. When he found that the oldest man to take the journey previously was 76, the challenge was set. Walking from one end of the UK to another isn’t something to be taken lightly. Tony has always been fit and active, he said he’d run ‘a few’ 16 | BN5 Magazine

marathons, with further conversation it turns out to be 30 marathons and ultra-marathons, as well as completing the gruelling 89km long Comrades Marathon in South Africa not once, but four times! South Africa was his home for 46 years until he moved back to the UK to live in Henfield two years ago. His most recent marathon was at the age of 67. It’s an impressive fitness CV, leaving him in a great position to attempt the Guinness World Record to be the oldest man to walk from one end of the UK to the other! His reason for choosing St Barnabas Hospice as the beneficiary of his fundraising is simple; Tony’s sister was cared for by the Hospice, and Tony wanted to give back and say thank you for their care and kindness. He was aware of the fundraising efforts of the Henfield Friends of St Barnabas House through his friend Lesley Besson, and having the support of the Henfield Friends was a real boost to his enthusiasm. Donations are still coming in, at the time of going to print he’s raised over £7,000 to help St Barnabas continue their vital work. Although photos of Tony’s arrival at Land’s End show a particularly rainy day, he was incredibly lucky to miss the almost biblical levels of rainfall we’ve experienced throughout November, in fact www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

he missed Storm Ciaran by a matter of days. The relatively fine weather ensured that Tony experienced the best of the British countryside, which is, as he will advocate, some of the most beautiful in the world. However, returning home is always a pleasure and Tony points out that Henfield has some of the best walks – his personal favourite is the Downs Link to Southwater or sometimes Horsham for a coffee. Although Tony completed the trip solo, he was fortunate to receive some wonderful support from his wife Sue, as well as good friends and family who helped with the practicalities of moving his luggage between each start and finish point, and other friends who encouraged him remotely via a WhatsApp group. He wants to give his heartfelt thanks to them all. Even strangers he met along the way took the time to chat and donate to his fundraising page, sometimes literally throwing money at him! “One funny moment was when I was walking up a rather arduous three-mile hill in the rain,” said Tony. “A car pulled up alongside, the driver obviously felt sorry for me and offered a lift. When I asked him if he was going to Land’s End his face was a picture! Another time in Shrewsbury a rather burly looking fella called out ‘Oi, you in the yellow jacket!’ and thrust some cash into my hand. He thanked me for making him feel that he’d done something good that day. All these

moments will live with me for a long time, it certainly restores your faith in mankind.” Looking to the future, Tony loves to inspire others by his own actions and to encourage people to get moving. He is a local Health Walks volunteer in Henfield, these small-group walks which are tailored to lots of different fitness levels and abilities, are a great way to get moving and enjoy some friendly company. He’s not suggesting everyone walks 874 miles, but he does believe we can all move more and enjoy the health benefits. The final words go to Tony. He said; “It’s a good idea to question yourself, what can I do? Am I in a rut, have I fallen into habits and think I just can’t do it? Small steps achieve incredible results, so just take that first step! I am happy to walk with anyone so please do get in contact if you’d like someone to start you walking!” If you’d like to walk with Tony, please feel free to email him on anthonycraigbishop423@gmail.com, he’d love to hear from you.

Grommets celebrate expansion with NEW commercial unit! Exciting news for Henfield business Grommets who continue to go from strength to strength. Recent expansion led to the purchase of land adjacent to their existing site at Holland’s Lane and the construction of a two-storey state of the art despatch and office facility. The offices were opened on a very important date – November 13th 2023, which would’ve been Sidney Wells, founder of Grommets, 88th birthday. Sid was a well-known Henfield man, he’s sadly no longer with us, but this family business is in safe hands with his daughter Jo at the helm as well as granddaughter Charlotte, son in law Mark, and stepson Josh in the team. Jo’s vision for the expansion (and tenacity in taking the project through a complex planning and construction process) has been a driving force. Grommets are leading UK manufacturers and exporters of grommets and custom moulded products and are proud to be local employers. As an engineering company they carry on the traditions of quality and innovation first championed by Sid. Grommets Ltd sell essential parts for the car, rail, aviation and renewable energy industries. This new 365m2 is the start of a new chapter for Grommets, allowing them to expand their manufacturing and keep pace with industry changes.

Nature all around: Henfield’s Year of Biodiversity 2024 Following on from the events focusing on younger residents throughout the 2023 Year of Children & Younger People in Henfield (including the Skate Jam event and the appointment of our new Youth Coordinator), 2024 is planned as the Year of Biodiversity in Henfield. We hope that by raising the profile of protecting our natural heritage in the village, the Parish Council and partner organisations can really make a lasting difference to local wildlife and our special Sussex scenery. Already pencilled in as potential events during the year are a BioBlitz in the Tanyard, a Bug Hunt for families on Henfield Common, and a community walk or trail in the summer. We also hope Henfield residents will engage with national events to support Biodiversity, like the RSPB Garden Birdwatch 2628th January 2024. Henfield Parish Council hopes that, by publicising its commitment to improving Biodiversity and assisting with coordination of community events in 2024, it can help local people and groups engage and enjoy our natural environment. The council can help arrange collaborations or offer

expertise and publicity where it can, but we really hope to hear from interested parties who can contribute to making 2024 a successful Year of Biodiversity. We have already had some offers from local naturalists and community groups who hope to get involved by organizing events in 2024, or who are happy to add a nature-friendly theme to events they already put on annually. Even if you cannot spare much time for volunteering or joining a walk, there will be other ways to take part, such as trying to spot our Henfield Plant of the Month and perhaps posting your finds on the website! Or maybe your club or community group can offer something topical in 2024 to help local nature recover. Details of this and more will be on the Parish Council Facebook page and at www.henfield.gov.uk/2024biodiversity in due course. If you care about the wildlife and environment in our lovely village, do join in with any, or all, of the planned activities… and watch out for further details.

Henfield Parish Council

In 2024, Henfield Birdwatch will be celebrating a great milestone: reaching the group’s 25th anniversary. This highly respected local group will be marking their significant achievement with some special events in 2024, which they hope will really tie in well with the Henfield Year of Biodiversity. These events include a play about birdwatchers in April, a book launch all about the birds of Henfield in February and much more. Watch this space!

Natasha’s Beauty celebrates 20 years in Henfield Many congratulations to Natasha Scutt who has just celebrated 20 years serving Henfield village with her beauty salon. We’re lucky in Henfield to have great local businesses with unique and hard-working people behind them, Natasha’s Beauty is a great example of this. Natasha trained as a beauty therapist after leaving school and worked in a Hove salon then as a mobile therapist, before taking the leap setting up her own business in a unit behind Henfield Post Office in 2003. After three years she expanded into bigger premises in Brick Lane where she continues to provide beauty treatments for her customers in the three-room salon. Natasha’s success is in large part due to the calm and welcoming mood she has created for the salon. She said, “`When our customers come to Natasha’s they know they can relax, enjoy a chat and maybe forget about the list of things they’re doing for others during their important ‘me’ time. It’s a very open and nurturing place, a safe space for laughter and occasionally the opportunity to offload! Many of my customers are now good friends, which is probably why we love what we do so much; it’s hard work but you’re often having a chat with good mates at the same time!” Natasha has always kept up with the latest trends in the fast-moving beauty industry, but her passion remains working with natural products. It’s where she sees the salon heading in future, her experience tells her that treating holistically is logical, the use of natural ingredients can nurture

01273 494002

both the body and the mind. She is fascinated by herbal remedies and homeopathy and tries to use organic and natural products for her skin therapy treatments. She’s also a great champion of other beauticians and small businesses, having mentored lots of apprentices and juniors. Charlie Prescott, who works alongside Natasha, started as a Saturday girl in the salon 10 years ago and loved it so much she eventually set up as a freelance therapist herself, she has become a great friend. Natasha’s absolute love is to showcase the talents of local artists. The salon is filled with beautiful things; handmade pottery from Kayarama Art; beautiful nature-inspired prints from Postlethwaite Prints; kimonos from Sewing Victoria and window displays from the talented Tamsin at Willow_Cutting Garden, to name just a few. “These local women all run their own creative businesses and I can offer them the opportunity to display their gorgeous creations at the Salon. It’s a way I can give back and help others on their business journey, it’s not easy when you’re starting out,” said Natasha. She’d like to thank everyone who’s supported her over the years, the loyal customers, friends and family who have encouraged her. “I just like to think I’m a useful human being,” she said. You’re not only a useful human being Natasha, but a huge part of Henfield life. Thank you for your contribution.

Update Many of you will remember that back in May 2023 Sustainable Henfield 2030 launched the monthly Henfield Repair Café with the aim of repairing everyday items that might otherwise go into landfill. It takes place on the third Saturday of every month from 10am to 12pm at the Henfield Haven. Well just a few months later and we want to share our delight at how well the Repair Café is going! In seven months we have received a massive 233 items for repair and managed to successfully mend 72% of these. We have given advice on another 13% of these items. We would like to thank our fantastic volunteer repairers who have mended an amazing selection of items including: radios, vacuum cleaners, tools, bags, china ornaments, bikes, clothes, jewellery and laptops. One of our repairers even mended a weather vane – what a talented bunch they all are! Although we ask for a small donation, the service is completely voluntary. If anybody feels ‘cash strapped’, please don’t let this stop you coming along; we want to help everyone in the local community irrespective of their financial circumstances. Once we have paid the (not inconsiderable) start-up costs of the Repair Café, any profits made will go to Sustainable Henfield and local carbon-reducing projects. In addition to the Repair Café, our sharpening service has also proved very popular with over 350 items such as knives, scissors, secateurs and shears sharpened in seven months. The sharpening team do a fantastic job over the two hours they are open and charge only £1 per item. We’ve also run a couple of workshops alongside the Repair Café: Melo Velo came along to teach people basic bike maintenance and Liquidamber ran a session on using chain saws – both sessions were very well received.

01273 494002

The Repair Cafe really is a team effort and it could not work without all the other volunteers who carry out equally important jobs such as admin work, PAT testing and welcoming customers. We always have colleagues from Sustainable Henfield on hand to help with any queries on energy saving, biodiversity and recycling. And most importantly we also have tea, coffee and homemade cakes available which are very popular – it’s lovely to see the cafe area buzzing with conversation while people wait for their repairs to be completed. In fact it has a lovely community atmosphere about it, and we’ve had some great feedback from our customers: “Thank you for repairing the cat ornament for me. I am really pleased with the results, as the ornament is precious and was gifted to me from my Mother.” “Thank you so much for taking up my Dads trousers - saves buying him a new pair! What a great resource you are for the village, keep up the good work, thanks again.” “The ‘tigers eye’ necklace that Viv repaired was given to me by someone special. I am so grateful to her for doing such a wonderful job with the clasp so that I can wear it again.” So if you have something in your cupboard that could perhaps be given a new lease of life rather than be put in the bin, do come along and see us – we would love to see you. And because we’re getting busier each month, we’re always looking for more volunteer repairers. If you would like to join us, why not pop in and see us? You would be welcomed with open arms!

In the House of the Mouse This October half term, after a year of unrelenting pressure from our two boys we finally surrendered and, ruining our financial plans, took a family trip to Disney in Florida. After hearing stories of mammoth queues in sweltering heat, I did go with a certain amount of trepidation, a portable fan and a kindle. In an effort to withhold a few of my dollars from Mickey Mouse, we elected to stay in a rented house outside of the Disney complex, and we were pleasantly surprised to find we had been “upgraded” to a property with a pool. On arrival, the waters looked particularly inviting to some hot and weary travelers, so as soon as I had unpacked, I did a couple of lunges and dived right in. Given it was Florida, I was expecting a warm and refreshing dip – instead, it felt like a had jumped into an ice bath! I will confess to being a bit of a wimp when it comes to swimming in cold water, and I am sure any sea swimmers out there will be rolling their eyes, however, it was certainly not what I was expecting – the only consolation being that I was certainly not hot or weary when I got out about 30 seconds later! I then went on to read our guest guide to discover that if you wanted to heat your pool above absolute zero, you had to pay $500 for the privilege! Needless to say, I decided to use the pool as a drinks cooler and donate the money to Mickey in the form of merchandise and sustenance. Actually, other than Annelise thinking that she was going to die on the first and last rollercoaster that she went on, we all had a

great time and the queues were not as bad as they had been billed. However, hidden, additional costs turned out to be a bit of a running theme for the trip and it would have been much less painful to have been able to pay for everything upfront and not have to keep taking your credit card out of your “bum-bag”! It is along these lines that I am pleased to say, we are launching a “platinum” version of our Practice Health Plan which includes unlimited veterinary consultations for a fixed monthly cost. As well as unlimited veterinary appointments, the platinum plan includes all of the same benefits as our standard plan such as vaccinations, flea, tick and worming throughout the year, unlimited nurse appointments, annual blood and urine tests and discounts off other products and services at the practice. It compliments pet insurance well, by covering the things that insurance doesn’t. The monthly price of the platinum plan is £30 for dogs, £27.50 for cats and £19 for rabbits. Additionally, if you have more than one pet on a platinum plan, then you’ll receive a discount on each pet’s plan. So, if you have an elderly pet, a pet on long-term medication, or would just like peace of mind that you can visit the practice as many times as you like without incurring any consultation fees, then the platinum plan may be for you! You can join online via our website or just contact us for more information. We don’t currently offer a plan for mice, but I am working on a plan for one mouse in particular…. watch your back, Mickey! Jonathan Underwood

Pickleball launches at HLC Henfield Leisure Centre has launched a Pickleball drop-in session on Wednesday evenings from 8-10pm. The first two taster sessions were a huge success with around 40 players each week and they plan to continue the sessions charging just charging just £5 per player. They’re also hoping to launch a daytime drop-in session soon too on Thursday mornings. Pickleball is an indoor raket sport which is a mix between tennis and table tennis. Players use special paddles and a wiffle ball to play on a badminton size court with a tennis-height net. It’s the easiest of all racket sports to learn and play and because the paddle and ball are so light, it can be played by young children right through to adults into their 80’s. Whilst it can be played as a singles game, it’s usually played as a doubles game. It’s played on an adapted badminton court and Henfield has the perfect surface for Pickleball. Pickleball is one of the world’s fastest growing sports with statistics showing over 35 million

01273 494002

players in the US alone. At the recent English Pickleball Open in Telford there were over a 1,000 players using 42 ‘pop-up’ courts. While Pickleball ball is fairly new to the UK, East Sussex has had a strong influence on the UK game, with many UK and even European champions hailing from the Eastbourne area. Simon Thompson the manager at Henfield said: “It’s fantastic to be able to bring a new exciting sport to the village, that all ages and abilities can come and try. We’ve been very lucky that local coach Wayne has been giving up his time to help us set-up Pickleball at the Leisure Centre. As well as running a couple of drop-in sessions a week, people can also book courts to play throughout the week and on weekends. You can borrow all the equipment from the centre, so why not come along and give it a go!” Please contact the Henfield Leisure Centre if you want to find out more information about the sessions on 01273 494984.

Changes to landline telephones The UK’s telephone network is being upgraded and landline services are changing, with changes in Henfield scheduled for spring 2024. Thank you very much to local resident and technology expert Robert Seaford from Henfield Computers for bringing this important subject to our attention. The following advice is reproduced with the permission of Age UK: 48 | BN5 Magazine

www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

JANUARY 2024 | Local interest What is changing? – The landline analogue network is being replaced with newer digital technology called ‘Voice over Internet Protocol’ (VoIP). You may also hear this referred to as a digital landline. Digital landlines use an internet connection to make and receive calls. You’ll need an internet connection at home to use the new landline digital system. Once you’ve moved to the new digital system your landline will mainly work as it always has, although there will be some differences (see below). If you already have a broadband connection then the new digital landline system will use this. But don’t worry if you don’t have broadband, your network provider will supply you with a connection to support the new digital landline system. Why are these changes happening?

- The current analogue landline network needs to be replaced because it’s old and becoming difficult to maintain. The new digital landlines use the internet to make phone calls which offers better quality calls as well as some additional features.

When are these changes happening?

- The changeover has started and some people have already been moved to the digital system. For most networks the changeover will have happened by December 2025. Providers will contact their customers ahead of the change to let them know when they’ll be making the switch to a digital landline.

What happens when I change to the digital system? - Your telephone provider

connected to your phone line. You should contact your device supplier to check if your device will work with the new system or whether any equipment will need to be upgraded. Although your landline telephone provider will contact you before the switch takes place, you may want to let them know about any telecare devices that you have in advance. If you’re buying a new device you should also check with the seller or manufacturer that this will be compatible.

Will my new phone contract be more expensive? - You shouldn’t face extra costs

if you need a new simple internet connection to make calls.

What happens if there’s a power cut?

- A digital phone will only work in a power cut if it has a battery back-up, because it’ll run using your home electricity. In these instances, phone companies are advising people to use mobile phones as a backup. If you’re dependent on your landline phone (for example if you don’t have a mobile phone or you live somewhere where there’s no or poor mobile signal), then your telephone provider must offer you a ‘resilience solution’ free of charge to make sure you can make emergency calls during a power cut. This could be a mobile phone (if you have mobile signal) or a battery-backup unit that connects to your landline phone and provides power in case of a power outage.

Is there anything I should watch out for? - The switchover can create an opportunity

for criminals to develop new scams. These scam attempts could happen over the phone, via email, or in person on your doorstep. Remember the following scam advice when someone’s contacting you about the switchover: STOP – take a moment to stop and think before parting with your money or your personal information. CHALLENGE – could it be fake? It’s OK to reject, refuse or ignore any requests. You should never feel rushed or pressured into making a decision. PROTECT – contact your bank immediately if you think you’ve been a victim of a scam and report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040. Other unscrupulous people may also try to sell you equipment or get you to sign up to expensive contracts that you don’t need. In these cases it’s important that you don’t rush into making any decisions. You can always seek a second opinion and speak to your phone company who should be able to advise you about what you need. Will anything else be affected, like my telecare? - The switch to digital landlines may www.ageuk.org.uk/information-advice/moneyaffect telecare devices and other equipment such legal/consumer-issues/changes-to-landlineas personal alarms and security alarms if they’re telephones/

will contact you in advance to let you know when your system’s changing and what you need to do. In some cases an engineer will need to visit to make changes. For the majority of people, the change will be straightforward. If you already have a broadband connection, you may just need to plug your phone into your broadband router or you’ll be sent an adapter that connects to your phone and plugs into your router. If you have more than one phone socket with separate handsets, you may need additional adapters. When you’re contacted by your provider let them know if you have any questions or concerns about moving to the digital service, or if you need any additional help. Can I keep my phone number? – Yes, in most cases you’ll be able to keep your current phone number. Will I need a new phone? - Nearly all existing handsets will work with the new system. But if you do need to change your handset, your phone provider will be able to advise you on this.

The Autumn Statement The Chancellor delivered a far more positive and optimistic Autumn Statement than would have been expected even a few months ago. With a recent fall in inflation figures and in light of improved debt and borrowing forecasts, the Chancellor focused on the economic progress made in 2023 and plans to use his newly found fiscal headroom to support growth and make work pay.

a wider spectrum of the UK economy.

Several possible tax measures floated in the press in the lead up to the statement, most significantly to Inheritance Tax and Stamp Duty Land Tax, were nowhere to be seen. The Chancellor must now hope that the strength of the economy continues its current trajectory and that he is able to make further announcements in the Spring, in what will almost certainly be his last opportunity before a General Election.

While the abolition of Class 2 NICs should bring simplification for individuals, it is imperative that HMRC’s records and systems are robust enough to identify effectively under the new regime when selfemployed individuals are entitled to credits towards state benefits.

For businesses, the most significant tax measure was the announcement that ‘full expensing’ (the ability for companies to get a full tax deduction for qualifying plant and machinery) would be made permanent. For the employed and self-employed, the most significant announcements related to reductions in National Insurance Contributions. A whole host of other tax and non-tax measures were also announced.

Full expensing of capital expenditure - First announced in the 2023 Spring Budget, full expensing replaced the temporary super-deduction for capital expenditure which ended on 31 March 2023. It gives companies full uncapped tax relief (‘full expensing’) for qualifying capital expenditure and was originally introduced for expenditure incurred between 1 April 2023 and 31 March 2026. The government has now announced this will be made permanent, providing capital intensive businesses with a new level of certainty. Qualifying capital expenditure for these rules is, broadly, expenditure on new plant and machinery. The rules also incorporate a 50% first-year allowance for ‘special rate pool expenditure’, which includes integral features in a building, such as electrical systems. Hailed by the Chancellor as the biggest tax cut in history, this measure will be warmly welcomed by many businesses. It is disappointing that it remains available exclusively for companies and not unincorporated businesses; it could be said the government has missed the opportunity to support 60 | BN5 Magazine

National Insurance contributions (NICs) for the self employed - Self employed individuals (sole traders and partners) currently pay Class 2 and Class 4 NICs. Class 2 NICs is currently payable at a flat rate of £3.45 per week and contributes to an individual’s eligibility for certain state benefits. Class 4 NICs is payable at 9% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270 and at 2% thereafter. The Chancellor announced that Class 2 NICs will be abolished from 2024/25, with eligibility for state benefits being dealt with through the Class 4 NIC regime (although those with annual profits below £6,725 will still be able to make voluntary contributions of £3.45 per week to continue accruing entitlement to state benefits). The rate of Class 4 NICs on profits between £12,570 and £50,270 will fall from 9% to 8%.

The Class 4 NIC thresholds are not set to increase until at least April 2028, meaning the effect of fiscal drag must be considered alongside the reduction in the rate of Class 4 NICs. Class 1 National Insurance contributions (NICs) - The main rate of Class 1 National Insurance Contributions (NICs) paid by employees will be cut from 12% to 10% with effect from 6 January. This main rate applies to earnings between the primary threshold (£1,048 per month) and the upper earnings limit (£4,189 per month). The primary threshold and the upper earning limit will themselves be maintained at their current levels until at least 2027/28. There are no proposed changes to the rates of employer’s Class 1 NICs. For an employee earning £35,000 per annum, the reduction will be worth approximately £37 per month, while for an employee earning £63,000 per annum the saving will be approximately £62 per month.

It is clearly good news for employees that the rate of NICs is being cut, although for some the benefit will be eroded by the fact that the primary threshold will remain the same for the next few years. Employers need to ensure their payroll systems are updated ready for Month 10 2023/24. sales@bn5magazine.co.uk

Expansion of the cash basis - The government previously consulted on a number of changes it was considering making to the cash basis, under which unincorporated businesses calculate their taxable profits with reference to cash movements, rather than profits calculated under the traditional accruals basis. The government has now announced some significant changes, including the complete removal of the turnover eligibility threshold (currently £150,000), the restriction on interest costs (currently £500), and the loss relief restrictions. It is also expected that the cash basis will become the default method of calculating trading profits, subject to possibility of making an election to use the accruals basis instead. The removal of various restrictions currently in place in respect of the cash basis is to be welcomed, although we have some concerns over the proposal for this to become the default way of calculating trading profits for unincorporated businesses. The cash basis provides a useful simplification for smaller businesses, but for larger and more complicated businesses, it will always result in a less accurate understanding of a business’s financial performance.
