Editor’s Letter Remembrance is, as always, the theme of our November front cover, with a photograph of the Henfield War Memorial which bears the names of all the local men who lost their lives in the two World Wars. If you have a quiet moment this month, please take the time to stand and read the list of names. You will be moved by the sadness of it, of the young lives lost. Seeing the same surname appear more than once, (brothers, or perhaps cousins?) one appreciates the enormity of the sacrifice for such a small village. Our Remembrance events (organised by Henfield Parish Council) on Remembrance Sunday, Armistice Day and at the laying of grave poppy crosses on Friday 8th, commemorate these men. We pay tribute to all those who have, and still do, serve in our armed forces in war zones and peace keeping, including present day conflicts. Those who need help today have the support of The Royal British Legion through their Poppy Appeal, with the money generously donated by you. The total raised in Henfield always far out-strips the size of our village. One Henfield collector, Jean Cranford (pictured above with local RBL Poppy Appeal organiser Mike Morgan) has been recognised with an award for her service to the Appeal. She’s collected in all weathers, door to door, for over 40 years. She is an inspiration, thank you for your service, Jean.

Henfield Arthritis Fundraisers

In 1980 a group of friends got together and formed a Committee for the Henfield Branch of The Arthritis and Rheumatism Council for Research to raise money for the treatment and research into the two hundred plus forms of arthritis. Over the years there have been many changes of name and committee members, but still with the same objective, to raise money to help arthritis sufferers both young and old to lead a more active and less painful life. Our group, now called Henfield Arthritis Fundraisers continues to raise money to help all aspects of arthritis. Our next event will be our 33rd Turkey and Tipple Lunch to be held in the Henfield Hall on 21 November, from 12-2pm. Entrance costs £8, which includes a turkey sandwich, a glass of wine, mince pie and a cup of tea or coffee. We hope you will be able to come along and support us in our fundraising efforts.

Henfield Stroke Support Group

If you or someone you know has had a stroke, you’ll understand the impact it can have on daily life. Local resident Graham Powell, himself a stroke survivor, has set up a monthly self-help group which meets at The Plough on Henfield

High Street on the last Tuesday of every month from 11am-2pm. “I suffered a stroke 18 months ago and it was life changing. Medical staff and family were fantastic but the one thing that was missing from my recovery journey was the opportunity to share concerns with fellow survivors. This is what has inspired me to set up the self-help group and become a volunteer with the Stroke Association.” For more information you can contact Graham on 07763 973101, email grahampowell306@btinternet.com or just pop in to the next group meeting.

Henfield High Street Christmas late night opening, Friday 6 December

Join us for ‘A Christmas Carol’ themed evening on 6 December from 5-9pm. The story also features ghosts from Christmas past, present and future, so plenty of scope for kids and parents to dress up! Santa’s Sleigh will be out, and Santa will be with us too. Reindeer will be in the garden at Stokes, plus owls and some other attractions. As with last year, we expect that many of the village’s shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes will be able to put on their own attractions in support of the Christmas Carol theme.

Henfield Theatre Company auditions

Tiddly Proms 2019

Visitors to Leonardslee Gardens on 13 and 14 September enjoyed an evening festival of Jazz, Big Band and Classical Music. What certainly added to the enjoyment of the event was the great weather, with temperatures reaching a balmy 22 degrees. As well as some excellent music to create the party mood, one of the top attractions was the Boutique Shopping Courtyard of fine wines, artisan spirits, craft beers, cocktails, global cuisine, art, fashion and lifestyle products. Entertainment was provided by a splendid harpist and a juggler. The Last Night of the Proms live on giant outdoor LED screen was a highlight of the event. From orchestral dances and marches to songs and arias, world premieres to traditional favourites, this year’s Last Night of the Proms was spectacular. Finishing off the evening was the Pyromusical Fireworks Finale, the perfect end to a wonderful evening.

Michelin Star Awarded to First Vineyard Restaurant

Set within the historic Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens estate near Horsham in West Sussex, Restaurant Interlude is believed to be the first UK restaurant associated with its own vineyard to win a Michelin Star. Open for just one year, the restaurant’s tasting menu is inspired by the Grade I Listed woodland gardens with ingredients foraged or grown on the 240 acre Leonardslee estate, and other produce sourced from selected local farms. Owner Penny Streeter OBE brought Executive Chef Jean Delport from his native South Africa to open the restaurant in October 2018. He is only the second South African chef to win a Michelin Star for his restaurant, and one of the youngest recipients, aged 31. He formerly worked with Penny Streeter at her restaurant in Somerset West, Cape Town for

Henfield Theatre Company will be holding auditions for an interesting and inspiring play written by feminist Githa Sowerby in 1924 called The Stepmother. Set in a respectable home in leafy Chilworth, the action is centred on a wife and mother with a full-time job and an inheritance. This is a remarkable, rediscovered piece and is as relevant for our day as it was in 1924. There are 13 in the cast, 5 men, 6 women and two girls aged about 8 and 10. The auditions will be on Sunday 10 November, at 2.30pm and Tuesday 12 November, at 7.30pm, in The Henfield Hall. The production runs from 19 - 21 March 2020 with rehearsals on Monday and Thursday evenings, starting on 6 January. The play is directed by Rosemary Nice, 01273 492221 or rosemarynice@btinternet.com. We couldn’t have done it without the inspiration of so many people wishing us well and offering practical help. We are particularly grateful to the Parish Council who stood full square behind us.”

Sandy Lane development update

The Planning Inspector has dismissed the appeal by Fairfax Acquisitions against the refusal of planning permission for 42 houses on the field next to Sandy Lane, Henfield. The decision means that the proposal will not go ahead. The inspector found that the proposal did not accord with the Horsham District Framework Plan. He concluded that the benefits from additional market and affordable housing would be outweighed by the harm to the character and appearance of the area and the harm to the setting of the three Grade II listed buildings at the entrance to the Henfield Conservation Area. Phil Johnson of the Campaign to Protect Rural Henfield described it as a major victory for the community. “The Inspector emphasised the importance of housing development following local plans and in doing so he upheld the right of our community to decide where housing develop-

They are both experienced in the hospitality trade and are delighted to have already welcomed many customers, both regulars and those visiting for the first time. Their first week was better than they could have imagined, and they have had to do an emergency beer order for the weekend! The kitchen is currently closed for a refit and there is more work to be done, but please do pop in and see them for a warm welcome.

Over a hundred people attended the lecture in the Free Church Hall on Friday 4 October. Alan gave a very interesting talk using his extensive collection of slides to take us through the early years of Henfield, through to the present day. Alan’s vast knowledge and amusing anecdotes ensured the lecture was enjoyed by everyone who attended. Tea and delicious cakes were served at the interval provided by the Friends all of whom worked so hard to make the evening a success. St Barnabas House Light Up a Life Appeal - Alan’s story

In 2017, my husband Alan was diagnosed with cancer in his lungs, kidney, spine, lymph and brain. He was 70 years old. It was a huge shock for me and our two children, Holly and Max, who were 20 and 10 at the time. It was really important to me and Alan that we told Max about it in the best way we could. That was when we first tapped into the help available from St Barnabas – when we got advice from the Bereavement Team on how to deliver the news. When we told Max he said, “If I could have him for another year, that would be okay.” In the end, he

got his wish. Towards the end, the Hospice at Home team from St Barnabas were visiting us. Alan was bed-bound and needed a lot of care. The team were just so special. It wasn’t just Alan they were looking after – it was all of us. Finally, Alan went to St Barnabas, where he slipped away in June of last year. Since then, we’ve all continued to receive amazing support from St Barnabas. Holly and Max have both had bereavement counselling, and I still see the Social Worker around once a month. Please make a gift to St Barnabas so they can provide the same amazing care for local families in the months ahead. Paws & Claws

Paws & Claws is a small rescue charity founded in 1977 and run by volunteers. We rescue, rehabilitate and re-home cats in the Mid-Sussex area, and no cat is put to sleep except on veterinary advice. Cats come in for many reasons. Some young and easy to home while older ones are often not chosen quickly, so stay with us until we can find the right home. There are cats better suited to rural life, and we have successfully homed many to small holdings and stables. (ring Irene 01444 831286). Some have been traumatised by their experiences and we keep them longer to help them gain confidence. Whilst every effort is made to find the perfect

home, many cats come into our care and are not adopted because of age, health, temperament and they live with us permanently in our Pavilion, furnished for their comfort and with a safe garden. We run a sponsorship scheme so do contact us if you are interested. Finding the right homes for each cat is our prime concern, so please ring Val first on 01444 457758 to make an appointment to view a cat or visit our website www.pawsandclaws-ars.or.uk.

Named PCSO for every local community – Sussex Police

Every community in Sussex will have a named PCSO starting from next month, Sussex Police has announced. The confirmation follows an investment in 100 extra PCSOs, secured through local funding by Police & Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne – bringing the total number to 296. Chief Constable Giles York said the decision will put ‘eyes and ears’ into every part of the county and give local people a direct point of contact for local policing issues and concerns. “When we introduced the new local policing model three years ago, we said it would be scalable. Now, thanks to this additional investment, we’re in a position to strengthen local policing and we know this is what local communities want to see,” said Mr York. “Our PCSOs do an incredible job, every day, working alongside their police officer colleagues to prevent and detect crime and tackle anti-social behaviour in our local communities. “This change means communities will soon begin to see and feel the benefits of their investment as new PCSOs are deployed over the coming months, where they will provide a visible policing presence and be a point of contact for local policing issues.” The change will take effect from November 4, when all existing PCSOs will adopt responsibility for a defined geographical area, and be rolled out

Tell us a little about what you do We create individual designs and collections and apply them to various items for the home such as our fine bone china tea set, mugs, bowls and plates. We also have designs ‘etched’ onto glass whisky tumblers. More recently, we have applied them to a collection of silk scarves and cotton aprons, including a children’s range. We also sell greetings cards and notelets. We source beautiful natural products such as candles, reed diffusers and essential oil fragrances. We were delighted to learn that the company that makes our candles and diffusers made the candles to go on the tables at Harry and Megan’s wedding reception dinner! How long have you been running your business? The idea for the business was formed some time ago. The company was formed in 2014 and we set off round the UK researching various manufacturers and producers to ensure a good fit for us. We were finally ready to launch our first collection at the Spring Fair NEC in 2017. Since then we have shown at Top Drawer, Olympia. Some of our English Kingfisher range of bone china sells through Historic Royal Palaces. What is special / unique about your business? We were originally inspired by the exquisite botanical illustrations of the early 20th Century and have drawn on this to create unique and original designs. We have borrowed from the classical style and added our own flare to give a more contemporary look which complements todays lifestyle tastes. Our products are made in Britain using carefully sourced materials and skilled craftspeople.

Which aspect of your job do you like best? I have always enjoyed the creative side of things – developing the designs and forming collections. Now I find I love meeting and chatting with customers and visitors to the shop. Helping people select just the right item as a gift or for their home is great. I love feedback as I can then adapt future orders. Has anyone inspired you in your work? I have met lots of people over the past few years who have either inspired me and or given me enormous encouragement. I would not have achieved anything without them! In terms of opening a shop and developing and extending our own products, Jill Stein’s lovely range in the gorgeous Rick Stein shop in Padstow, Cornwall has been an inspiration. What are you most proud of? I am most proud of taking what was little more than a dream and making it a reality. There is nothing like the first time you pick up an actual real item that has your very own designs on it! What do you like most about living and / or working in Henfield? I live in Fulking so Henfield has always been part of daily life one way or another. Now that I work here it enables me feel connected to the village in a whole new way. I love the sense of real community and the entrepreneurial spirit of the High Street is inspiring.

Kirsteen and Adrian cycle 300 miles for Cancer Research

Huge congratulations to Kirsteen Daly and Adrian Hillman, who completed over 300 miles by bike during September and raised over £1,500 for Cancer Research in the process! The fight against cancer is something they are both passionate about and they intend to continue their fundraising next year. Their next challenge will raise funds directly for the Worthing Hospital Breast Care Unit. The incredible team at Worthing have looked after so many patients from the Henfield area, including Kirsteen during her recent treatment which finished in July and Adrian’s wife Katherine. Adrian said; “When we decided to cycle 300 miles in just a month I did wonder if the distance would be too much. Kirsteen had only just finished her chemotherapy programme and, although she was keen to use the challenge to get her fitness back, I knew it would make it all the harder for her. I can honestly say I am humbled by what an incredible and determined lady she is. Through rain, wind and mechanical problems with the borrowed bike she was riding, she never stopped smiling, she is an absolute inspiration.” The pair aimed to complete 75 miles a week, with a final, big 50-mile ride on the 29th September, joined by friends and family for parts of the ride. The weather was a challenge at times, with Adrian describing the final ride in gale force winds like ‘riding into a brick wall’! There were some great moments and every ride was always celebrated with cake and coffee, often at their favourite stopping place, the Sea Lane Cafe in Goring. Kirsteen said; “We both have good reason to be thankful for all the good work done by various cancer research departments especially the amazing team at the breast care department at Worthing Hospital.” The next challenge, due to take place in June 2020, will be something a little bigger! They plan to cycle the ‘Sussex Borders’ alongside around 20 other cyclists, travelling 200 miles of varied terrain over the course of two days. The reason? To help the Worthing Hospital Breast Care Unit buy some vital equipment for the diagnosis and care of patients with breast cancer. Worthing Hospital has treated many patients

from Henfield who have direct experience of the exceptional care given by the dedicated team of surgeons and nurses. If you’d like to get involved next year please watch this space; we’ll be bringing more news of the Sussex Borders Challenge over the next few months in BN5.

ach year Henfield Parish Council organises a series of events to commemorate those from the village who gave their lives fighting for their country. This year there are three main events and residents are welcome to participate in all of them. Poppy Cross event - Friday 8 November 2019 Children from Year 6 at St Peter’s Primary School will attend a brief service at 11am at St Peter’s Church where pupils will read out a short eulogy for each of the servicemen actually buried in the cemetery. After the service, some of the pupils will visit the graves in the cemetery to plant poppy crosses. The final poppy will be laid at the Memorial Wall, where a brief explanation will be given about the fallen who are buried elsewhere and prayers will be said to end the proceedings. After which the children will return to school. Remembrance Day Parade and Service Sunday 10 November 2019 The parade will meet by the Cagefoot Lane War Memorial at 9.10am and will move off to St Peter’s Church at 9.20am headed by the Brighton and Hove City Brass Band. The church service will start at 9.45am. At 10.30am the Parade will reform and return to Cagefoot Lane War Memorial for a short service. This will include wreath-laying by a number of local organisations and a twominute silence which will be held at 11am. Orders of Service will be provided at the Church and at the War Memorial. Armistice Day - Monday 11 November 2019 Residents are invited to gather at the Cagefoot Lane War Memorial from about 10.50am. Two Parish Council marshals will halt the traffic immediately before 11am and the Last Post will sound. A long-serving collector from the Royal British Legion will lay the RBL wreath at the War Memorial. After the two minutes a whistle will blow and the Reveille will sound to signify the event has finished and traffic will move again.

LAMBS – AN UPDATE ON OUR CAMPAIGN

S

ince the June meeting at St Peter’s Church in Henfield, the LAMBS (Locals Against Mayfield Building Sprawl) committee, together with residents from the affected parishes, have been working together to oppose the proposal from Mayfield Market Town (MMT). The turnout on the night showed how strongly many of you feel about the threat of a new town on our doorstep and your generous donations have enabled us to commission reports which show that MMT’s proposal is both unsustainable and undeliverable. Since the meeting we have been working on finalising our reports and gathering the required evidence for submission to Horsham District Council (HDC). We have analysed the content of the brochures MMT sent out in July and a fact-sheet has been published on our website in response to their claims. We have launched a new website and increased our presence on social media to engage with the local community. What reports have been commissioned and what do they say? - Following advice from planning consultants we have commissioned reports highlighting serious concerns with the proposed development site. Land Control - LAMBS analysis indicates that MMT do not have sufficient land for the proposal to go ahead as they currently control less than 50% of the land shown on their proposals. Flooding - The proposed site is in an area prone to fluvial flooding with significant risks for settlements further downstream as simple mitigation onsite is unlikely to resolve the wider impact. Also identified are potential serious issues

44 | BN5 Magazine

with wastewater disposal as well as inadequate areas for balancing large amounts of new surface water run-off. The additional wastewater and run-off arising from the Northern Arc development upstream in Burgess Hill, and potential impacts from the rise in sea levels given that the Adur is tidal, indicate that the challenges of the site will only worsen in the future. Transport - The site’s location is considered unsustainable as there is inadequate local infrastructure for a development of this size. The site is distanced from the strategic road network and rail connections with the only access being through key Air Quality Management sites at Cowfold and the Stone Pound Crossroads at Hassocks. Local Economy - The development is unlikely to achieve ‘self-containment’ in employment, as per Mayfield’s vision. Current plans for retail and office space is not considered adequate for the levels of on-site employment space required. The current trends in high street decline give rise to concerns that employment space may be reallocated for residential use. The development is being promoted on the basis of minimal commuting but there is an established pattern of out-commuting from the district, which is likely to persist. New retail space is likely to divert expenditure from Henfield and the negative impact this will have on existing local businesses must be carefully considered. Ecology & Visual Impact - “Red listed” species have been identified at the site, along with important wildlife corridors connecting the North and South Downs. Field patterns have changed www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

NOVEMBER 2019 | Charity

very little since the first published Ordnance Survey map of 1879 and there is a continuity of landscape features such as woodlands, fields and ponds. The development is likely to have a significant impact on both daytime and nighttime views from the South Down National Park (SDNP), damaging the SDNP’s International Dark Sky Reserve. How much has been raised to date and how has this been spent? - We are close to our target of £30,000 and would like to thank everyone who has contributed so far. To date we have spent £11,500 on evidence and reports. Our website and social media management have been donated and a small amount of funds have been allocated to awareness raising via both online and offline channels. Money has been set aside to pay for further legal advice from planning experts. Is anyone else fighting this development? Yes, The Inter Parish Group now consists of 17 Parish Councils in HDC and Mid Sussex who are deeply concerned about the negative impacts and oppose Mayfield’s plan. A sub group of 10 directly affected parishes have paid for their own flooding report which has already been submitted to HDC and can be seen on all parish council websites. Are HDC still considering this proposal and if so why? - HDC are examining 7 or 8 large strategic sites of 1,200+ houses within the district to satisfy the government’s increased housing targets. Homes England have recently published proposals to build 10,000 houses on government land near Ifield in the north of the district, but HDC appear to want a southern site as well.

01273 494002

Have LAMBS had any meetings with HDC? LAMBS have a working relationship with Planning Officers from HDC and have discussed these proposals and the reasons why this location is unsustainable, undeliverable and ultimately not viable. HDC will use the reports and evidence provided by LAMBS in their decision making process. Have LAMBS had the advice of a QC? - LAMBS are working closely with a QC and will be seeking further advice when the reports have all been finalised and will keep you informed. Have MMT consulted with the affected Parish Councils? - Although there was a presentation in May, to date there has been no consultation with individual Parish Councils. What happens next? - LAMBS will finalise our reports, seek legal opinion and attend further meetings with HDC before the end of the year. HDC Planning Department are expected to share their preferred site recommendations with all the Parishes by the end of the year in a consultation process. At the beginning of 2020 the District councillors will vote for the sites they wish to see developed. LAMBS will continue to post articles on our website and on social media and encourage as many people as possible to write letters to their District and Parish Councillors and MPs objecting to this development in the strongest terms. ABBA Chique will be recreating the vibe with a precise vocals, stunning costumes and a powerful stage presence full of energy and fun. A lovely and talented group of friends of the Haven will be using their creative skills to create an ABBA theme for the Henfield Hall and you are warmly encouraged to dust-off your 1970’s fashion to help you get into the mood on the evening. And if the dancing all gets a bit much, the bar at the Henfield Hall will be open all evening for alcoholic and non-alcoholic liquid refreshment. Tickets (priced £12.50 each) are limited in availability so get yours now to avoid disappointment. They are available from Jasmines Florists, Stokes of Henfield and the Henfield Haven.

The Henfield Haven, Henfield’s vital community centre, opened for business in November 2015. Initially providing high needs care for people living with dementia and carer support, the range of services and activities now on offer has increased dramatically, principally provided by Lorette Mackie and her team from Impact Initiatives. The overall management of the Haven is conducted by the Henfield Haven Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), the trustees of which are all local volunteers. A major role of the CIO is to raise sufficient funds to ensure that the Haven’s future is secure and to maintain and improve the building, facilities and grounds. Fundraising efforts to date have included Quiz Nights, participation in village events such as the Gardens and Arts Festival and of course our annual anniversary concerts. We are extremely grateful to the local residents and businesses who support us so generously. NOVEMBER 2019 | Charity

Recognition for local Royal British Legion fundraiser

L

ocal resident Jean Cranford was recently recognised by the Royal British Legion for an amazing 40 years of voluntary service to the charity by collecting for its annual Poppy Appeal. Jean received her Royal British Legion West Sussex Community Award Certificate at an official ceremony at Shoreham Airport on 11 September 2019 – an experience which Jean described as “amazing!” However, this fantastic achievement is only the half of the story as Jean was collecting for the Poppy Appeal for a long time before the Royal British Legion started keeping formal records of its collectors. Jean explained: “Collecting for the Royal British Legion is something that I’ve always done - I used to go out with my Mum and my Auntie collecting door-to-door on the Wantley Hill Estate when I was a little girl. When I got married aged 18 years, I carried on, but I took my husband Gerald with me instead! We’ve been married and collecting together now for 46 years!” Jean does have a personal connection to the First World War, although it’s something she only found

out about last year: “My mum’s uncle, Anthony Hole, was killed in action right at the beginning of the War in 1914 and so it may have been this which prompted her to start collecting for the Royal British Legion. But I’m also collecting for the next generation – I currently have a nephew who is serving in the British Army and it is for service men and women like him too.” Jean loves the social side of collecting: “I often see the same people every year and I also meet a lot of new people and I enjoy chatting to them all. I do think that people are more generous now than they used to be and children are much more aware of the Poppy Appeal and what it’s for – they will often ask their parents to buy them a poppy.” Despite having been diagnosed with health problems, Jean still goes out and about collecting for the Poppy Appeal every year, although on reduced hours. She also assists Mike Morgan with the final collection count and often lays the poppy wreath on the Henfield War Memorial. She is truly an inspiration to our community!

Sarah Butler

The Poppy Appeal is the Royal British Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign held every year in November, the period of Remembrance. If you would like to get involved in collecting for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal locally, please contact Mike Morgan on 01273 492134. Liver Support for Weight Loss

The liver is the largest gland in the human body and carries out over 500 essential tasks including the detoxification of a multitude of chemicals and the metabolism of alcohol and medications. In 21st century living, the liver has a lot more challenges than it was designed for. We have plastics leaching into our foods and water, air-borne pollution and a host of toxins which enter our bloodstream via the skin due to our use of cosmetics, cleaning fluids and beauty products. So how does this relate to weight gain? The liver is the principal organ responsible for creating energy from the fat that we eat rather than storing it. To burn fat effectively the liver needs to be functioning optimally. An example of how this can go wrong is by considering that the action of alcohol on the liver is to prioritise the breakdown of alcohol at the expense of blocking our normal fat burning processes. If you’ve ever cut alcohol out of your life for a while you may well have seen the weight drop off. Well consider how much more effective weight loss could be if we supported our livers with a comprehensive cleanse programme which used a delicious array of plant-based foods, supplements and careful guidance on how to remove household toxins and harmful pesticides. A heavy burden on the liver could well be the obstacle to shifting those reluctant pounds. Call the clinic on 01273 835116 to arrange your own bespoke cleanse.

T

he Great War exacted an horrendous toll in millions of human lives. Often overlooked was the fate of millions of horses and other animals. Horses were a vital element of the war effort, being far more efficient at traversing heavy, sticky ground than motorised transport which was still in its infancy. One such horse, Hopit, is buried on private land on the outskirts of Shermanbury Grange near Partridge Green. Hopit’s war service mirrors the epic film ‘Warhorse’. Raised in Ireland, Hopit was bought a Tattersalls in 1912 for £162.15.00 by Colonel Colvin for his son John Forrester Colvin. John, as a 2nd Lieutenant, and Hopit joined the 9th Lancers in France in November 1914. In 1915 the 9th Lancers fought at Ypres where they had to contend with clouds of poisonous gas as well as relentless shelling and machine gun fire. Subsequently they served at the Somme where the mud of the trenches was said to be so deep that horses and men simply disappeared if they strayed off the duck-boards. Spring 1917 saw action at Arras, then followed the horror of Passchendaele. John was badly wounded in fighting near Carpeza Copse in March 1918 and sent to recuperate in a hospital in Wimereux. Rejoining his regiment in August, John and Hopit saw action outside Amiens before joining the pursuit to Mons. Both John Colvin and Hopit survived The Great War; Hopit unscathed, whilst John Colvin was gassed three times and wounded once. Hopit’s post-war years were spent point-to-pointing, hacking and hunting; he died on 7 January 1927 and was buried within an avenue of trees on the outskirts of Shermanbury Grange. The inscription on Hopit’s gravestone lists his campaigns:

dge to Edge was a Horsham District Year of Culture initiative for 2019, led by artist and facilitator Luna Russell in partnership with three Parish churches; St Peter’s in Henfield, St Michael’s in Partridge Green and St Nicholas in Bramber. The aim of the project was to bring together adults over four weekly sessions to celebrate community, craft and local heritage to design and stitch bunting that would be gifted to each church. Participants were able to design and hand stitch bunting flags with imagery and words inspired by the local area and the changing seasons, stitch in beautiful churches positioned along or close to the Downs Link, relax over tea and cake whilst sharing sewing tips with each other, and meet new friends, share stories and ideas. Following the workshops Luna created a central flag for each set of bunting made from reclaimed copper from the roof of Chichester Cathedral, which is currently being replaced as part of a restoration project. The design of the copper flags was inspired by each of the workshops and the people taking part. Each Church will keep their set of bunting to use at future community events. A celebratory event was held on Wednesday 4 September 2019 in partnership with Horsham District Healthy Walks Programme where participants, friends and walkers were invited to join Luna and Walk leader, Jill Shuker from St Michael’s Church in Partridge Green to St Peter’s Church in Henfield. There they enjoyed refreshments as they looked at each set of bunting and met the participants who took part in the project. Luna said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed leading

the Edge to Edge project, each workshop have enabled people to come together to create something unique for their local community. We were incredible lucky to be hosted by three beautiful churches close to the Downs Link. These inspirational spaces offered the perfect relaxing and calm environment to sit and stitch as we shared stories with one another. When the sun shone we sat outside in the Churchyard and listened to the bird song as we sewed, drank tea and cake, you really can’t ask for more than that in any project!” Each of the bunting flags were embroidered with imagery and words that represented the maker and the community in which they live, inspired by their local heritage and the changing seasons and uses of the Downs Link. As a precious metal jeweller Luna designs and makes work inspired by haberdashery under her brand name ‘Silverdashery’. As well as creating the copper flags the project also inspired a new collection of work. Luna said “I walked along the Downs Link before I started Edge to Edge to get a feel of how the communities were connected to it, it’s used by so many people including runners, cyclists and dog walkers. Over the last year as the seasons have changed I’ve noticed the changing colour of the trees above me and the small twigs that have fallen beneath my feet. I used some twigs and cast them in silver to be worn as necklaces, it’s lovely to have something that is symbolic of this project and the stunning landscape that is on our doorstep. I hope that I’ll lead future projects following on from Edge to Edge, it’s been wonderful”

Christmas Parties If you are planning a Christmas party for your staff, don’t let the taxman crush your festive spirits! Paul Samrah advises how to celebrate in style. A staff party, paid for by an employer, technically counts as a benefit in kind on which employees are taxed. However, there are two exemptions that allow employers to host the event without it being treated as a taxable benefit. The first exemption applies where the cost per head is no more than £150. For this to apply, the event must be generally open to all and not be exclusive to a particular group. However, events based on separate working locations or departments of employees are allowed, if generally available to all employees within the location or department. Unless the principle of generality is achieved, then the full amount is taxable against the employees who attended. For example, an event exclusively for directors which excluded employees would not qualify for the exemption. Employers may organise more than one annual event and all such events may qualify for relief as long as the cost per head, in any one tax year, does not exceed £150 in aggregate. For example, if two events are held, one costing £120 per head and the second £40 per head, the total £150 limit has been breached. In this case, the whole of the first event will fall within the £150 exemption, but none of the second. The second event costing £40 may be covered by a tax relief relating to trivial benefits. This relief allows employers to provide employees with any number of benefits provided that the cost of each is less than £50, the benefit is not cash or a cash voucher, there is no contractual entitlement to the benefit, and the benefit is not specifically provided in recognition of services performed by the employee.

If only one event is held in the year and the sum spent is more than £150 per head, then the full amount spent will become liable to income tax and national insurance (NI) for both staff and employer alike. It is not possible to combine the two regimes to give a combined limit of £200 towards a single event. It is taxed as a benefit, which could bring a nasty chill in the New Year. When planning your event and estimating the tax implications, remember that the price per head is calculated on the total number of attendees; that is all staff, their partners and any clients, and not just employees. Secondly, make sure you include all incidental costs. This means adding up not just the venue hire and catering costs but all the other things, such as entertainment fees, taxi fares, overnight accommodation and any VAT charged (regardless of whether or not you are VAT registered). Divide the total cost of each function by the total number of people (including non-employees) who attend, in order to arrive at the cost per head. If an HMRC enquiry is launched, you will need to provide details of all the costs and attendees. Beware of trying to apply HMRC’s concession to ordinary staff entertaining. You need to hold an event that is clearly a formally organised function. Some employers also make the mistake of charging the party to entertainment in the accounts, then forgetting that an event worth over £150 per head must be disclosed on the P11D. There are potentially harsh penalties for incorrect completion of the forms as well as corporation tax implications. It is worth remembering that although VAT on entertainment is not reclaimable, VAT on staff parties can be reclaimed, even if it exceeds £150 per head. This is an extra Christmas bonus not to be overlooked! Enjoy the party season!
