Henfield Football Tournament

Editor’s Letter Our July issue is packed with photos of the wonderful Jubilee weekend celebrations, Henfield, you did us proud! There were parties galore, picnics and games, celebrations, music and displays of crafts. The long weekend started with a blazing ball of fire; kindly provided by the Henfield B-P Guild, when the Henfield beacon was lit, and ended with symbolic ringing of bells at St Peter’s Church. At BN5 we were out in force taking photographs, a big thank you to all our contributors, especially Mike Ainscough for his capture of the Platinum Hits concert. The only event we didn’t manage to cover was the King’s Field children’s day, so if you have any photos you can share, please email me - emma@bn5magazine.co.uk and we’ll make sure they go in the Henfield Museum archives. A big thank you to all the organisers, party-throwers, bunting-makers, bakers, knitters and sewers; to all those who saw the value in community and worked so hard to make this unique celebration so special. Your efforts paid off beautifully. Many of us remember past jubilees fondly (and some of us the coronation itself) and we know that June 2022 will be a lasting memory for us all.

Sue Marooney awarded MBE in Queen’s Birthday Honours

We were absolutely delighted to hear that local Fulking resident Sue Marooney was awarded an MBE in the 2022 Queen’s Birthday Honours for ‘Services to Education’. Sue, who has been the headteacher at Durrington High School for nearly 20 years said: “It is such a great honour, especially in the Queen’s Jubilee year, to be awarded the MBE. I was totally taken by surprise when contacted and am humbled and proud to receive the MBE on behalf of all of ‘Team Durrington’, past and present. The lovely messages I have already received from family, friends and colleagues past and present are overwhelming. Personally I couldn’t do what I do without the support from my amazing family and professionally without my brilliant team. I am looking forward to a number of celebrations!” Congratulations to Sue for this thoroughly deserved award, from us all in the local community.

Do you know someone who lost electricity due to one of the winter storms?

We’re looking for people aged 18 and over who experienced power cuts for two days or more this winter (2021/22) to tell us about their experiences. Participating will involve speaking to us in a video/telephone call for 45-90 minutes in exchange for a £30 Amazon or other gift voucher. Reasonable adjustments will be provided, including BSL interpreters, easy read formats, and other needs you might have. We want to find out what support people need in future power cuts. We will be examining experiences in relation to disabilities and/or long-term health conditions; but you do not need to have a health condition to participate. We hope to learn lessons from these incidents about what did and didn’t work for people with a range of different needs. How can you get involved? Horsham District applauds our 2022 community volunteers

Winners of the inaugural Horsham District Volunteers Awards were announced at a special presentation ceremony as part of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in Horsham’s Carfax. Horsham District Council wanted to recognise and reward the exceptional work of local volunteers during The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebration week which also coincided with Volunteers Week. Congratulations to the Henfield Haven Volunteers won the ‘Dream Team Award’ as a collective for their wonderful work keeping the community centre running smoothly. Commenting on the awards and winners, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community Matters Cllr Liz Kitchen said: “I am delighted that we have introduced these awards to give residents the opportunity to nominate people or groups who have really made a difference to communities in our District over the years, and most recently, as we have gone through some of the toughest times we have ever known. It is fantastic that their contribution and the amazing work they do is being recognised in this way, during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and Volunteers’ Week. Their dedication and commitment to their voluntary work does much to transform the quality of many people’s lives locally.”

Have you considered becoming a School Governor?

The Governing Body at Upper Beeding is currently looking for additional Governors and would love to attract the skills and experience of parents and our wider community who would like to give something back to the school. Every maintained school in England has a Governing Body responsible to the local community for running the school. School Governors are volunteers who work together with the Head teacher to deliver the best education for pupils at their school. Generally, school Governors are not specialists in education. Instead, much of the role is about exercising common sense – and of course working together in the best interests of the children. The Governors work with the Head teacher on a diverse range of matters, from deciding what kind of school we want to be and thinking about how we want it to get there; from setting school policies to ensuring money is spent wisely and on the right things.

For more news go to www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

JULY 2022 | News Governors are unpaid volunteers doing what they do to simply try and make Upper Beeding the best school it can be. In return they gain skills which they may not otherwise acquire, as well as getting a wider perspective on a key part of their community. Most importantly, Governors get the satisfaction of knowing they are helping to make a difference in the education of children. The term of office for a school Governor is four years. If you are interested in joining our Governing Body, or would just like to find out more information, please contact the school office in the first instance on office@upperbeeding.w-sussex.sch. uk or pop in and see us. All elected Governors are required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) application within 21 days of their election.

Henfield Youth Football Tournament success

The Henfield Football Youth Tournament returned in May after a three-year gap, to glorious sunshine and huge crowds of supporters and competitors. It was fantastic to see Henfield residents come out to support the event, watching great talent displays from age groups U6 to U15 playing football with enormous smiles on their faces. We were proud to be able to bring the Sussex youth footballing community together. Winning teams were awarded their trophies on a stage to the soundtrack of champions league music, this helped make the young players feel extra special. Sam Witherden, co-chairman said: “The feedback we have had from the village and from teams entering has been amazing, one club from Eastbourne took the time to write us saying that it was the best tournament they had ever entered, the vibe and organisation was first class and that they can’t wait to return next year. We would like to thank all our sponsorship partners and our great team of volunteers on both days who helped to make the event such a success.” Planning for next years’ event has already started and the club is already looking forward to welcoming teams back and inviting teams from further afield to participate in Henfield Football Club’s showcase event of the year.

The trails are located in Billingshurst, Henfield, Horsham, Pulborough, Southwater, Steyning and Storrington. They are designed to appeal to a wide range of people, including families (ages 8+), young people, groups of friends and work colleagues. The main aim is to create an exciting experience that brings people together socially, connecting them to our stunning towns and villages across the Horsham District. This is especially pertinent after the impact of the pandemic on people’s mental health and wellbeing. 20 | BN5 Magazine

To play the game, which could be described as an outdoor ‘escape’ room, participants pick up a Mystery Trail map from each town or village library and follow the clues to solve the puzzle. The answers will help players solve the final mystery back at the library by looking into the character’s workspace window. Players can follow one trail or complete all seven to reveal the final chapter of the mystery. Annalees Lim and Luna Russell from Whistlestop Arts are the creators of Mystery Trails. Annalees said: “We are thrilled with the response to the Mystery Trails and hope that over the summer, more people will get involved in this free and exciting opportunity.” She adds: “For younger ages, there is a series of special ‘Summer Side Quests’ where children can solve an image-based mystery in each of the seven towns. We hope that this range of free activities for all ages will be appealing. It’s a great way to engage with the www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

high street and surrounding areas, stay for food and drink, browse the shops, explore the library and museum and discover the hidden gems of each town.” Annalees and Luna collaborate on all aspects of the Mystery Trails project, Luna writing the stories and Annalees creating beautiful illustrations to bring them to life. Their website, whistlestoparts. org, draws you into their world and the range of projects they are involved in. Luna said: “We have loved creating Answare, our protagonist’s story, plus the seven different characters for each town and designing their bespoke workspaces in the libraries. The library service is a fantastic community resource. We hope its members will engage with the trails, and those who have yet to discover the delights that the library offers will go inside and discover more.” She adds: “The Mystery Trails will run until the end of March 2023, giving people the chance

to engage fully with all seven trails, explore the website and sign up to receive Answare’s newsletter, as well as create their own Secret Agent Name!” The project has been enabled with government Welcome Back funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Horsham District Council has worked with Whistlestop Arts to create the trails. Visit: whistlestoparts.org/mysterytrails and download the Mystery Trail maps or go to the library of each town and ask for a free map. “We’ve been using Henfield Home Checks since they began and cannot recommend them highly enough. Highly professional, innovative and extremely kind, they have transformed my father’s life and therefore mine. They have enabled my father to remain safe and happy in his home, despite him being elderly and an insulin dependent diabetic. Their friendliness and “can do” attitude have made the last year especially, so much easier and more enjoyable for us both. We feel extremely lucky to have them in our lives and honestly, I don’t know what I’d do without them.” Julia K - Hove

The Henfield BP Guild certainly created an evening to remember on the Rothery Field on Thursday 2 June with the lighting of the Jubilee Beacon. It felt like the whole village turned out to witness this historic occasion and whilst they waited for the office start time they enjoyed the BBQ and bar laid on by the wonderful BP Guild volunteers, who also made the beacon itself. At 9.45pm prompt, chairman of Henfield Parish Council Malcolm Eastwood lit the Henfield Beacon and a little piece of history was witnessed by the village. 30 | BN5 Magazine

JULY 2022 | Local interest concert in the Village Hall was a complete sell-out and so an audience of 200 enjoyed a fabulous evening’s entertainment, dancing along to 70 years of platinum hits. John Willis, one of the event organisers, said: “The band were magnificent. The audience were certainly ready to celebrate the Jubilee, and have three hours to forget their problems and enjoy good music and company.” Proceeds from the evening (around £1,000) will be shared between the Henfield Haven and Henfield Youth Club. JULY 2022 | Local interest We know from previous events that Henfield is blessed with some truly creative individuals and they didn’t let the village down for the Jubilee celebrations! Overnight a wonderful array of crafted Jubilee-themed decorations appeared as if by magic around the village, including a dedicated Jubilee Walk on Blackgate Lane which featured corgis, crowns, flags, bunting, teapots and even Coldstream Guards standing to attention around the pond at the Tanyard!

Despite a damp start to the day, residents came together on the Henfield Common to share in the fun of the giant family Jubilee Picnic. With food stalls, fancy dress parades, traditional sports and Patcham Silver Band providing the musical entertainment. Great fun was had by everyone, a big thank you to Henfield Parish Council for organising the day, as well as the Children’s Fun Day on the King’s Field on Thursday. 34 | BN5 Magazine

Bridge

“The Best Card Game … Ever”

A

lot of bridge players say that. Sometimes, the next thing they will say is that it’s also the “most frustrating game they have ever played.” Both statements are true. And then there are those who will just mutter “that’s Bridge for you!” The truth is that Bridge is a game of intellectual gymnastics. There are many moves and conventions which can leave you wrong-footed and in awe of the expert who can find their way out of a difficult position – of which there are many! There is no better ‘high’ than making a seemingly impossible contract as you smugly replace your hand back in the board. So what happens in the Garden Room at Henfield Hall on a Friday afternoon? Well, during lockdown between March 2020 and July 2021 little or nothing and a lot of our members turned themselves from ‘silver surfers’ into ‘silver gamers’ and played online. However playing online is not the same as playing face to face so when all lockdown restrictions lifted on 19 July 2021 the ABCD Henfield Club restarted much to the joy of all members. Since then numbers of attendees have gradually risen to a now flourishing average of nine tables which for a club the size of ours, makes for a very good and competitive session of bridge. We play on Friday afternoons in the light and airy Garden Room of the Henfield Hall. Play commences at 2pm and we play between 20 and 24 games in three hours of play. Each session is run by a trained director. The result for each session is computed by the director

36 | BN5 Magazine

and uploaded onto the ABCD Henfield Club website. The website includes information about current competitions, past results, future bridge sessions and other relevant information. The Club, almost by the definition of the game of Bridge, is competitive but extremely friendly and increasingly popular and we are always looking for new people to come along to play and to find out for themselves. Anyone who has a basic understanding of the game of duplicate bridge is more than welcome to come and play and we will even try and find you a partner if you don’t have one. One of the new directors said about the club: “I have been approached by other clubs to become a director – and have always turned them down. However, Henfield is a fantastic club where everyone welcomed my playing partner and me when we first visited the club. We have enjoyed ourselves at the club and have seen just how friendly everyone is. That’s why, when I was asked if I would be prepared to become a director, I agreed to do so. My training and travelling expenses were paid by the club and I continue to enjoy each session, whatever the result and how well or badly I have done. Since becoming a director I’ve also joined the committee in the hope of developing and improving the identity of our club” The website can be found at: www.bridgewebs.com/abcdhenfield/

Buy to Let Tax Implications If you are considering purchasing a residential buy-to-let property, you may not be aware of all the tax implications. Usually there will be two taxes that you may have to pay. These are Income Tax, which is payable at your marginal tax rate each year based on your income from the property after deducting certain expenses that you have incurred, and Capital Gains Tax (CGT), which is payable when you sell the property and is based on the sale proceeds of the property less the original cost. Income Tax

There are two types of income that you will receive from your tenants – rent and deposits.

Rent is taxed each year based on the income that is due to you during a Tax Year, rather than on the rent that you actually receive during the year. For example, if a tenant pays you in advance, only that part which falls due within the Tax Year will be taxed in that year. The remainder will be taxed in the following Tax Year. Similarly, if a tenant is late paying you, that part which was payable in the earlier Tax Year will still be taxed in that year. The only exception to this is when a tenant defaults on a payment and you are not able to recover the amount due. Deposits are not taxable whilst they are still repayable to the tenant, but once either part or all of the deposit ceases to become repayable, for instance, because there has been damage to the property, then it becomes taxable at that point. There will be various expenses that you will incur on your property, those that you can offset against your rental income (allowable expenses) and those that you cannot offset against your rental income (disallowable expenses). The more usual items are listed below. Allowable: • Advertising the property for let; • Repairs to the property and general maintenance costs; • Cost of services provided to your tenants, such as utilities; • Managing agents’ fees; • Accountancy fees, where you employ a professional agent; • Insuring the building and contents; and 60 | BN5 Magazine

Interest paid on any loan taken out to buy the property (subject to below). Disallowable: • Renovation work and improvements made to the property, e.g. replacing an item with one of a higher specification, installing central heating, carrying out any work which was accounted for by a reduced purchased price for the property; • Capital repaid on any loan taken out to buy the property; • Costs incurred whilst the property is not available for letting; and • Costs of purchasing/selling the property. This list is not exhaustive and you should seek advice to ensure that you obtain any tax relief available. Loan Interest Relief

From 2020/21, relief has only been available at basic rate. For higher and additional rate taxpayers this effectively means you have a further 20% or 25% charge on loan interest paid. Where rental yields are low, particularly in London and the South East, this could even result in a net cash loss. Where property businesses are highly geared, this could also affect profitability significantly. Where an expense is not allowed for Income Tax, you may be able to obtain tax relief for these expenses once you sell the property and this falls within the CGT regime. There are additional rules regarding furnished lettings, including furnished holiday lettings. These rules may result in you being able to claim additional expenses against your income. Capital Gains Tax

The gain, subject to tax, comprises the proceeds that you receive from the sale less the price that you originally paid for the property. These costs will include your costs of purchasing and selling the property, such as legal expenses, estate agents’ fees and Stamp Duty Land Tax. If you have carried out any improvements to the property, including renovation work, and these costs have not qualified for relief under the Income Tax rules, then you may be able to get relief for these expenses now. sales@bn5magazine.co.uk

After deducting the CGT exemption (presently £12,300), the gain is taxed at 18% or 28% depending on your overall level of income. An estimate of the CGT liability arising is payable 60 days after completion – with any balance payable on 31 January following the end of the Tax Year in which the disposal took place. Advice should be sought before you put the property on the market with a view to mitigating any potential gain. Various options might be available, including joint ownership or giving consideration as to whether you could validly elect for the property to be treated as your Principal Private Residence (PPR) prior to disposal. Administration

You are required to complete a Personal Tax Return and pay your tax liability for each Tax Year once your letting has started, even if you do not already receive a Return from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). HMRC charges penalties where a Tax Return is submitted late and interest where tax is paid late. Paul Samrah, Moore Kingston Smith LLP T: 01737 781546 E: psamrah@mks.co.uk
