Editor’s Letter
It’s lovely to hear news of local events on the horizon, especially now, it’s a real indicator of some tentative steps towards normality. One event we are thrilled to see coming to fruition is the Walk for Louise, taking place on Sunday 22nd August. Louise Clark’s kindness had a positive effect on many local people, especially those connected with St Peter’s Church and School. She is missed not just by her immediate family and friends, but by many of us who worked with her a little and enjoyed her sunshiny nature. She brought fun, enthusiasm and kindness to all the projects she was passionate about, especially children’s church. Louise’s faith was an absolute cornerstone for her so it’s fitting that the walks start from one of our three Parish Churches, and end in a beautiful haven of nature; Sussex Prairies. You don’t need to have known Louise to join in, it’ll be a wonderful walk and a happy, celebratory community afternoon for everyone. Please take a look on page 26 for all the details. Thanks to Rev’d Paul Doick and Cllr. Malcolm Eastwood and the team of organisers for making this happen. It’ll be a perfect tribute to Louise. Enjoy the summer holidays and this wonderful corner of Sussex!

Marcus Grimes raise money for Henfield Haven
As Henfield Estate Agents we were thrilled to wheel out our trusty Candyfloss maker for the good folks of the village who came out in great numbers to support the first ‘Village Day’ post lockdown and it was a great success. Thanks to all the staff who gave up some of their weekend to help out. We made over £140 for our chosen charity The Henfield Haven and here is Nellie Grimes handing the cash over to Chair of Trustees Digby Stephenson. By the way, the Haven has an amazing café open to the public for lunches, so go along and give it a go. You will be supporting a vital facility in the village.

Big Bird Bash!
Henfield Birdwatch ran another Big Bird Bash, in aid of The Henfield Haven, at the end of May. A series of walks throughout the parish to see how many different species of birds can be found in one weekend. The early walk headed north from the Downslink car park and the group was treated to some lovely experiences. Two Nightingales were singing and flying around in the scrub bordering the track and by Betley Bridge a male Yellowhammer was singing “littlebitofbreadandnocheeeese” in a nearby bush, and a female was seen carrying nesting material or food in her beak. Two different Cuckoos were heard, one near Deer Park and another by the river. All these species are Red-listed Birds of Conservation Concern, so it is brilliant that they seem to be thriving so near to the village. Beside the river a hunting Barn Owl was seen. On two occasions the owl swooped into the grass, came up with prey and headed off – back to the nest to feed its young.
The folk who joined the three evening walks not only enjoyed the wonderful songs of up to five different Nightingales and caught a glimpse of the Kestrel family in their Woods Mill nest box, but then saw and heard a Turtle Dove, and spotted some Lapwing chicks – yet more Red-listed species. www.henfieldbn5.co.uk | 9
News | AUGUST 2021
Grey Heron youngsters were still hanging around the couple of nests which had been occupied this year, and several Little Egrets were noticed, including one perched in a tree, showing off its main distinguishing feature - yellow feet! A pair of Mute Swans were proudly showing off their family of six cygnets. And more Red-listed birds put in an appearance, with several Skylarks singing, and chattering Linnets flying around by the river. An astonishing 69 species were seen and donations came to just over £500 – all to go to our wonderful Henfield Haven.

We still play at the Village Hall on a Monday evening from 7.30 until 9.30pm but no longer have a league team. These days we play strictly for fun and fitness which has always been the core strength of the club along with the social side which is now sadly, much reduced. So, if you used to play but have neglected it for many years, why not make this the time you revived old skills and interests? We are all recovering from a year of inactivity so it will be a gentle introduction when we restart in September. South Downs MP asks dog walkers to ‘Take the Lead’
Arundel and South Downs MP Andrew Griffith joined local farmers in Arundel on Friday 18 June highlighting the need for dog walkers to keep their dogs on a lead when near farm animals. Andrew joined Caroline Harriott, who farms at Findon, and NFU County Chairman Mark Chandler, who farms at Petworth, with representatives of the National Farmers Union (NFU), the South Downs National Park Authority, and Sussex Police. Their unified message to dog owners is: Keep your dog on the lead around wildlife and livestock; Always bag and bin your dog’s poo; Stick to the path and keep your dog close, particularly during ground-nesting bird season (1 March – 15 September); Stay out of MoD danger areas when the red flag is flying. Andrew said: “As a dog owner myself, living in such beautiful countryside, I know how inviting it For more news go to www.henfieldbn5.co.uk
AUGUST 2021 | News is to let the dogs run off the lead. The #TaketheLead campaign delivers a clear and simple message and asks owners to be responsible and only let their dogs off the lead when there is no danger to livestock or ground-nesting birds. “I will also be calling on Parliament for the creation of a national dog DNA database, which will help prevent the growing crime of dog theft but also have the side effect of making it easier to trace the owners of dogs who have attacked livestock.”

Henfield B-P Guild Annual Senior Citizens Outing and Meal
After the disappointment of having to cancel our annual Senior Citizens Outing and Meal last year due to obvious reasons, we are trying really hard to create a safe event for a Sunday afternoon in September this year. This year we will not be running the Mystery Coach Tour part of the event, but we are hoping to be able to offer sandwiches and a Cream Tea with some entertainment, all prepared and served by the B-P Guild as usual in the Henfield Village Hall. It is envisaged that the event will run between 13.00 and 16.00 hours, and that time slots will be issued to keep numbers of attendees to a safe level. This will be dependant on the number of people wishing to attend and will need to be
worked out later on. Tickets will be available from Hamfelds in the High Street or alternatively call Neil Featherstone on 01273 491074. Please let us know of any specific dietary requirements you may have when booking the tickets. We hope to see you soon. Further details will follow as the planning progresses.

Henfield Scout Community Centre – Project Update
Quite some time has flown past since we last provided a summary of the HSCC Building Appeal project, our small group of volunteers have been really busy. Whenever possible, we have seized opportunities to fund-raise with activities such as the Christmas Tree collection and environmentally friendly disposal and June’s Henfield High Street Party. We have had to appeal to the better nature of Rampion at Sussex Community Foundation to grant us an extension until September for our £50,000 grant award. We have revisited design details and material choices in order to address rapidly rising costs, maintained a constructive dialogue with neighbours and HDC, resubmitted our planning application, sought contractor tenders, responded to the storm damage to an ancillary building, felled dangerously diseased trees,

AUGUST 2021 | News liaised with utility providers and have cleared the area in readiness of “breaking ground”. At all times we have kept the Scout Group informed and supported them whenever possible, Covid restrictions has meant that this has been of paramount importance for the Group’s programme planning. By the time that you read this update, we hope to have either already commenced demolition of the old Scout Hut and construction of the new Community Centre or be about to start. We will be liaising with companies that have pledged goods and services to the project and organisations that have pledged funds to the project. The internal fitting out of the new building will rely heavily on the support of local tradesmen and volunteers for labour and materials. To facilitate this phase, we are appealing to all ex-scouts, parents of present members, builders, plasterers, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, flooring specialists and decorators to donate some time to help complete the project for the Henfield community. Limited companies can get tax-breaks from HMRC for goods and services donations, but absolutely everybody has some skill that we can put to use for the benefit of our community, so please offer your help. Whilst we have ridden the challenges of Covid-19, we are now experiencing new ones such as RPI rises and material and labour cost rises

and shortages, therefore we find that we still need £50,000 to complete the project and it is imperative that we garner as much help and support as possible to get this project over the line. In this respect we seek those individuals and companies who might be able to assist with any roles that we may identify; whether it is buying Naming Rights for the building and various rooms or simply buying an engraved brick or two...every donation, whether it is financial or of time and a particular expertise be it accounting, VAT advice or wielding a paint brush helps! ooking to build on the enormous success of the Cabin which they launched earlier this year, local entrepreneurs and siblings Emily and Kieran Berrett will be hosting an Art Fair at Berrett’s Farm on 30 August – the next bank holiday Monday. Featuring up to 30 local artists and creators, along with other local food and ice cream producers, Emily and Kieran hope this will become an annual event for local art lovers. Exhibitors have yet to be confirmed but will likely feature a range of different mediums including paintings, sculptures, pottery, jewellery, woodwork and glasswork. Located at the Cabin on Berrett’s Farm just off Hollands Lane on the Downs Link bridleway, the venue is very accessible on foot (or even bike or horse!) and will feature a relaxed atmosphere where visitors will be able to browse and buy the varied artworks on display whilst enjoying the beautiful views of the South Downs. The past 18 months have been a challenging time for many local businesses so it’s an absolute delight to hear of a positive news story. Taking advantage of a break in employment and building on Emily’s six-year experience in the hospitality industry, Kieran and Emily launched their new catering venture in March this year and have enjoyed great success. Secluded in eight acres of the most beautiful Henfield countryside with panoramic views of the South Downs the Cabin is open from 9am to 4pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday (also Monday and Thursday in the summer). Located just off the bridleway it is the perfect stop to refuel along the Downs Link for walkers, cyclists and horse riders alike.
01273 494002
Emily and Kieran serve locally roasted coffee as well as hot chocolate, teas and cold drinks (try their refreshing iced coffee and smoothies), and then there is the cake! Made by a Sussex family bakery, the Cabin has developed a reputation for stocking a rotation of mouth-watering cakes and biscuits including: almond macaroons, chocolate tiffin, coffee cake, carrot cake, millionaires shortbread, Eccles cake, ginger cake, and Viennese whirls to name just a few. As well as a welcome pit-stop for locals and visitors, the Cabin also provides an outlet for Kieran’s free-range egg business – not only can you buy delicious freshly-laid eggs, but you can also see the happy hens strutting their stuff on the farm! berrettsfarm Sarah Butler

Have your say on Rampion 2 wind farm expansion project
A
nine-week public consultation on proposals for the expansion of Rampion Offshore Wind Farm is now open from 14 July to 16 September at Rampion2.com inviting comments from the public. The project could power over one million homes in the UK in addition to the power already generated by Rampion and reduce carbon emissions by around 1.8 million tonnes per year. An ‘Area of Search’ eight miles off the Sussex coast has been assessed for a maximum of up to 116 turbines, the same number as the existing Rampion Wind Farm but using the latest turbine technology, so that the Rampion 2 Wind Farm could create up to three times the amount of power. An underground cable route is proposed to carry the power under Climping Beach to Bolney Substation in Twineham, to connect to the National Grid via a new substation required close by. “We encourage people in Sussex to visit Rampion2.com, where you can take a tour around a virtual exhibition, explore our detailed proposals with maps and videos, sign up to attend a public forum with the project team, and complete our questionnaire,” said Chris Tomlinson, Development & Stakeholder Manager, Rampion 2, RWE. Technical and environmental surveys and a fourweek informal consultation earlier this year have helped to establish the proposed cable route, undergrounding the cables in short sections. Directional drilling would take them under Climping Beach, railways, major roads such as the A27, the River Arun, Washington Recreation Ground and other key areas, to minimise environmental impacts and disruption to local communities.

Rampion is committed to full reinstatement of the land, so that it is returned to its former state or better along the whole cable route and the successful reinstatement of the Rampion 1 cable route demonstrates this commitment. Since January, possible sites for the new substation have been reduced from three to two in the Twineham area following further development work and consultation with the local community. Continued Chris Tomlinson, “We will consider all the consultation feedback alongside the results of technical and environmental surveys, to further refine our proposals and select construction methodologies and environmental mitigations that reduce impacts to a minimum. We will submit our final proposals to the Planning Inspectorate for examination in early 2022. “Rampion 2 is the only wind farm proposal off the UK’s south coast, where much of the country’s energy demand is. Should the project achieve consent, construction could start around 2025/26 with the wind farm fully operational before the end of the decade, contributing to Government targets to secure clean, green energy supplies and tackle climate change.” Discussions with local authorities, MPs, parish councils and experts on wildlife, environment, transport, geology, archaeology, business and fishing will continue throughout the consultation and beyond. UK wind energy context: The cost of offshore wind has halved in just two to three years and is now cheaper than nuclear and coal, while the industry is creating tens of thousands of jobs nationwide. The UK leads the world in offshore wind and the Government is committed to quadrupling offshore wind capacity to 40 gigawatts (GW) by 2030. Rampion 2 can make a major contribution to this target.

HENFIELD HIGH STREET PARTY & ARTISAN MARKET SUCCESS
S
unday 27 June, the date of the inaugural Local Artisan Food & Drink Market and the Henfield High Street Party, dawned fine with a few threatening grey clouds overhead. Stallholders and High Street businesses were relieved that the rain held off until later in the afternoon allowing for a wonderful, relaxed morning with a great turnout of supporters, visitors and shoppers. The delicious aromas from the South Downs Butchery barbie in the Post House Café garden, as well as the seafood barbie outside the George and the Salaka street food stall at Relish were truly enticing, there was music and a fantastic 22 | BN5 Magazine
steel band, while Marcus Grimes staff had a seemingly endless queue for cotton candy, raising a wonderful £140 for the Henfield Haven. Stokes garden was buzzing with excitement, ice-creams, cake and music while local people found out more ways to recycle with a visit from the mobile Horsham Eco Station, arranged by SH2030. In the Henfield Hall garden there were circus tricks, facepainting and balloons being fashioned into wonderful creatures, all of which put smiles on the faces of countless young people. Meanwhile, the Henfield Hall car park was full of shoppers clutching bags of local cheeses, fizz, samosas, beer, eggs, cakes, plants, chutneys, www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

biltong, ice-creams, smoothies and even frozen luxury meals! The Local Artisan Market had something for everyone and many of the stallholders sold out in record time. Huge amounts of effort went into the Artisan Food & Drink Market, after all it had been at least 18 months in the making, sadly interrupted by Covid-19. The energy for the initiative came from local producer Andrea Garrick from Katie’s Nuttery who was keen to support local producers as well as encourage visitors to our High Street. Henfield Community Partnership took over the logistics and facilitated all the licences and insurances to help Andrea’s mission to bring a great market to the village – and what a great success it was! We’d particularly like to thank Andrea Garrick, Carol Eastwood, Paul Crowe and all the Henfield

Community Partnership members who helped at organisational levels as well as on the day as carpark marshals and setting up the Artisan Market. The High Street Traders came together with some fantastic entertainment, food and music with the incredible hard work and creativity of Alison Egan and her team at Relish, with invaluable support from Oliver Borrow and the Post House Café and many other businesses up and down the High Street. Thanks to them all for making the effort to organise something so positive after the difficult year we’ve all experienced. Put a date in your diary for Sunday 29 August, the next Local Artisan Food & Drink Market, 10am-2pm. See you there!

L
ouise Clark, who passed away very suddenly earlier this year, was well known to many of you. She was the former Administrator to our three local churches, was deeply involved in St Peter’s Children’s Church and was also a Governor at St Peter’s School. But Louise was so much more than this. She was a bright and energetic individual who loved walking in nature and children. She was also a mother, a wife and a friend to many. We wanted to find a way for the local community to get together to celebrate Louise’s life and so a group of us came together and idea of a ‘Walk for Louise’ was born. To celebrate Louise’s life we have organised walks from our three local Church of England Churches (St Peters Henfield, St Giles’ Shermanbury and St Peter’s Woodmancote) on Sunday 22 August 2021 all of which will end at the beautiful Sussex Prairie Gardens. Paul and Pauline McBride have kindly agreed free entrance to their beautiful gardens for this event for all walkers so please make sure you collect your wristband from one of the starting venues and show it on arrival. 26 | BN5 Magazine
If you would like to take part, please arrive at one of the three churches ready to start walking between 1pm – 2pm. Each church will have a registration desk for individuals to register themselves and collect their wrist band which will give them free access to Sussex Prairie Gardens. The three routes are shown on the map opposite: regardless of which one you choose each walk will take between 1 and 1.5 hours and there will be stiles to climb (so are not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs). Please do bring something to eat and drink along the way if necessary, however it will be possible to buy delicious drinks, cake and ice cream from the Sussex Prairie Gardens Café. There will also be a designated picnic area should you wish to bring your own picnic. We are hoping for fine weather on the day so sun cream and a sun hat may be necessary! Children are very welcome on all walks but please do ensure they are capable of walking the distances involved. Well behaved dogs are also welcome but must they must remain on a lead at all times and please do ensure you clean up after them. Don’t forget to conserve some energy for the return walk home! In addition to the spectacular gardens to enjoy, you will also be able to browse the fabulous Indian Bazaar (which sells a beautiful range of quirky items) and tap your toes along to the Soho Village JazzBand who will be performing between www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

2.30pm and 4.30pm. There will also be some children’s entertainment. If you are unable to walk the distances involved but would still like to take part, the organisers will be running a minibus between the three churches and the Sussex Prairie Gardens between 1.30pm and 5pm. Children will go free but we are asking for a donation of £5 to cover the costs for each adult. This is a free event, but donations can be made en-route or online. There will be collecting buckets at the churches and Sussex Prairie gardens so please bring some cash or you can donate using the QR code below, or via cafdonate.cafonline.org/12987 You may wish to fundraise or ask your friends to sponsor you. All money raised will be donated to St Peter’s Church where it will be well used for their Children’s Church projects and the Little Fishes group. The event is a collaboration between St Peter’s Church, Henfield Parish Council, Community Partnership and other local organisations. Thank you for your support,

Woodmancote Parish Council - Chairman’s Report 2020/21
I
t has been a challenging and difficult year for many of us due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Parish Council put into action their emergency plan in early 2020 to provide support to residents, this support is still place. The Council adapted to hold meetings remotely, which allowed the Council to continue to function and enable members of the public to attend New Councillors - We welcomed Roger Noel and Len Fricker to the Council. David Lewis left his position as Councillor. I would like to thank him for his contribution to the council. Blackstone Playing Fields - The Council have been working to draft a new lease with Sussex Cricket and in April the Council obtained a rental valuation for the grounds to ensure the only asset the Parish holds is being managed to its best advantage. Work currently continues to negotiate the rent and terms of any new lease. Residents will be able to comment on the draft lease prior to finalising. We believe that it is important to understand fully residents’ views about the future of this site in the Parish and encourage people to review the draft lease, attend a Parish Council Meeting or contact the clerk to make your views (positive or negative) known. The grounds are open to residents of Woodmancote and Blackstone and look spectacular; Sussex Cricket continue to maintain the grounds to the highest standards. Speeding in the Parish - Speeding traffic is an issue that affects us all, we have a number of programmes and schemes underway: • The Council have set up a Community Speedwatch scheme, further details can be found on our website or via Steve O’Connell at CSW@sussex.pnn.police.uk . If you wish to volunteer, please contact the Clerk. • The Council submitted a Community Highways Scheme in relation to traffic calming and speed reduction, this strategy was implemented following our application for a Traffic Regulation Order to reduce the speed on the A281 being refused. WSCC Highways felt that traffic calming measures would assist with reducing traffic speed so that a lower speed limit could be subsequently introduced. Our application was supported by Cllr. David Barling. We are awaiting a decision on our application. • The Speed Indicator device (SID) unit is rotated around the Parish by the Parish Council team. To enable us to set the SID unit up in more locations we are to install six SID poles in the summer. The Council will then consider purchasing additional SID unit(s). Finances - The precept for 2021/22 was
01273 494002
increased by just 1% to £8,761. However, due to increased costs, the Council will need to look at increasing the precept moving forwards and we also have projects coming forward in 2021/22 that will utilise our current reserves. Planning Applications - During the summer the Council attended the HDC Planning Committee in relation to the development of the Blackstone Rise Garage site, which we strongly objected to. However, despite the Council’s best efforts, the HDC Planning Committee approved the application. As yet no detailed planning application for the site has been submitted to HDC. The council exists to represent the residents of Woodmancote and Blackstone and so we are always keen for parishioners to join us at our monthly meetings and make their views known. We currently have a vacancy for a resident to join us on the council - please contact Sarah our Clerk (07884 962453 / clerk@woodmancoteparishcouncil.gov.uk ), if you are interested.

Nine ways for businesses to recruit for growth
In a Small or Medium Sized Enterprise (SME) your people are your business, so recruiting the right talent is imperative. Finding the right talent can be a huge and expensive task. These days certain sectors are finding talent is in scarce supply. What can you do to ensure you are not only recruiting the right talent, but also talent who will stay and grow with your business?
Here are some easy steps to recruit and retain for growth: 1.
2.
Benchmark the salaries and benefits you offer - It isn’t all about the money, so think about other benefits as well (they go a long way). Research what your competitors are offering and use it as a benchmark. Have an exciting recruitment and on7. boarding process - Create an interview process that gives you a real insight into the people you may be hiring. Once you have offered the job, get them excited about joining your organisation. Create a welcome 8. pack giving them some personal insights about the team. Build a great induction experience that is slick and informative.
3.
Implement an organisation structure - It is good to have a career path, if your structure is flat, you may want to change it. Employees with a sense of direction and career structure will be motivated and less likely to leave.
4.
Link competencies to your job descriptions - Don’t just think about what tasks you want people to do, think about the person that you want and their personality and skills. 9. Having the right mix of personalities and skills is important for any organisation.
5.
6.
Wellbeing, diversity & inclusion - If you haven’t already considered these key areas as part of your business, your team and prospective employees will be expecting to see that steps are being taken to address these highly topical issues. Establish annual reviews - With the right team in place, annual performance reviews

should be carried out – these will motivate your team and benefit your business. Meaningful and realistic personal action plans can be reviewed and monitored. Turn your managers into leaders - Your managers are key your success. Train them to be great leaders, not task givers. If you do, they will inspire your team and be the future directors of your business. Run an employee survey - Surveys are a great way to find out what your team likes and dislikes about your organisation. Showing interest and responding to their concerns is vitally important. Employee engagement surveys can be conducted annually and anonymously. Specialist firms will provide an on-line tailored survey for your business and will benchmark the results year-on-year. During the pandemic, quick short ‘pulse’ surveys have been widely used and have helped management to pick up concerns and issues. Manage your external reputation - Bolster your social media profile and reinvigorate your website to show everyone what a great place to work you have. Keep reviewing and updating as your business grows and changes. Success stories, testimonials, case studies are highly valuable.
