Editor’s Letter

Welcome to our April issue. We have had such fun working with the incredibly talented and imaginative children from Stingray and Sharks classes at St Peter’s School for our St George’s Day cover competition this month. The project was set as a homework exercise and the judging was almost impossible! There were 42 entries, all colourful and filled with drama and story-telling. Enormous thanks go to Denise Maurice, Headteacher, and Malcolm Eastwood, Henfield Parish Council Chairman, for joining me in the unenviable task of deciding the three winners (who received book tokens from us); Alec Ballard, Harrison Sherrin and George Jordan. Our congratulations to ALL the children, we’ve reproduced as many of the designs as we could possibly fit into the magazine, and will make sure all of them are on our website. We used Alec’s illustration in our cover design, we loved the colour and energy in his image of St George conquering the enormous dragon, his original artwork is pictured above. There are some fantastic village events coming soon, the Horsham District Year of Culture has really inspired everyone. Don’t miss the St George’s Day celebrations (see page 42) and the Henfield Summer Fair and Show in July (see page 49). Enjoy the start of spring!

HENFIELD HANDMADE FURNITURE

Tell us a little about what you do I’m a Craftsman and I work with wood to build traditional, high-quality, bespoke fitted furniture such as kitchen units, wardrobes, offices, bookcases and under-stairs storage. I love problem solving, seeing an idea turn into a finished product and exceeding my clients expectations! Why did you decide on this particular career? I always knew I was good with my hands and I loved to build things. I realised that I wanted to be doing something creative that was also active. I started off as an apprentice back in 1993 as a veneer preparer in Small Dole for a company that specialised in fine reproduction antiques for the US market. I then went to live and work in Europe and I also spent 18 years working as a cabinet maker in America. I now have a wealth of experience in both traditional woodworking methods and commercial manufacturing practices and I’ve been self-employed for the past ten years. Who or what has inspired your work? Personally I love the work of Rennie Mackintosh, Green and Green, and Frank Lloyd Wright. I’m mostly inspired by the people I’ve worked for - I spent a lot of time in the US and apprenticed under an artisan woodworker before going into high-spec production cabinetry for custom home builders. I’m also inspired

by the evolution of machinery (particularly innovative methods for production) as well as good-old traditional English joinery! What are you most proud of? I’m proud of anything I’m building and I put myself into all my work. I know how far I can go with a budget and what can be achieved without any compromise to my own standard or the integrity of the work. I like to think that most of what I make will be around long after me and regard it as a kind of legacy. What do you like about living and working in Henfield? I grew up in Henfield and came back six years ago with my young family. There’s been a strong movement recently within the village of buying locally and I really enjoy being a part of a community that’s interested in sustaining itself and supporting traditional small businesses. Can you give us a top tip? Ask as many questions as possible about the product you are thinking of buying: Why does it cost more or less? Why are some materials preferable to others? Always compare local products with bigger name brands - sometimes what you are looking for is right on your doorstep!

New Dermal fillers & Anti-wrinkle treatment We are so excited to introduce Piotr who will be with us every Monday for a professional clinic... “I feel privileged as I have been trained by the best aesthetic doctors from Harley Street clinics, some of whom are pioneers in their field. By learning from their experience, I was able to acquire the required skills for a safe and effective practice in modern aesthetic medicine techniques. One may find surprising that our prices are not being set! This is because each client has individual requirements, goals and ambitions. The treatment plan will, therefore, be tailored to customer expectations, financial affordability, and anatomical features. Reserve your consultation now with Piotr.

News | APRIL 2019 trouble - it does not have to be down to those, like the police, with authority. If you take down details (perhaps with photographs) of speeding or dangerous parking and report them on the Sussex Police Operation Crackdown website, www.operationcrackdown.org or by telephoning 01243 642222 during office hours, be assured that appropriate action will be taken. Usually a warning letter is sent to the offending motorist, the problem is recorded, and if there are repeat occurrences further appropriate action can (and usually will) be taken. I know this because I am aware of such action taken as a result of reports made. Speeding can be difficult to report for obvious reasons, but now that so many of us have a camera on our mobile phones it can often be used to make a worthwhile report, and that cerDo you recognise these girls? tainly applies to dangerous parking, particularly on the yellow lines near the school, in the High This is one of Marjorie Baker’s photographs which was taken during WW2. Community Speed Watch group volunteers needed

The community have been concerned with the issue of speeding in the village. A good way for members of the community to help this problem is by forming a Community Speed Watch Team. The team will receive training in how to use a speed detection device, with all information being passed to the police for them to take appropriate action. He was passionate about his sheepdogs Reef and Nellie and had enjoyed personal success trialling, whilst helping many others in the sheepdog world with his training advice and support. Christian Aid week

Jamie Robertson, sadly passed away on 15 February. A familiar face in our community, Jamie was a true gentleman; softly spoken, kind, generous and unassuming. He touched the lives of so many people in so many different ways. In addition to his landscape gardening business, Jamie was a man of many other talents. He was a gifted musician who wrote and recorded his own music, played in bands and shared his love of music with others by teaching guitar. He was also a natural horseman. Having been brought up in the saddle he taught many children to ride through the pony

Christian Aid week this year is from Sunday 12 to Saturday 18 May and help is again needed with collecting. We are still seeking volunteers to take on this annual task in Henfield, Shermanbury and Woodmancote, but in the meantime there will again be a limited house-to-house collection this year. Last year we collected over £2,000, and with the help of those collectors, including ourselves, who wish to continue, we hope to reach that figure again. If you would like to help, please ring us on 01273 493172 or email jandpbates@gmail.com.

Henfield Garden Birdwatch

Seventy gardens have been closely scrutinized and information fed back to Birdwatch. It’s interesting reading! Most people see roughly 10 species in an hour’s watch, but 53 different species have been recorded. ‘Top bird’ so far, based on the number of gardens visited, is Blackbird. Wood Pigeon and Blue Tit are close behind, with Robin 4th. Though looking from the stance of the most individual birds counted, Blue Tit is top, Wood Pigeon still 2nd, but House Sparrow 3rd and Starling 4th – gardens with House Sparrows and Starlings have lots, but many gardens don’t get any. There have been some fascinating comments. Two rather sad ones; a rat took a Song Thrush from under a feeder, and a Blue Tit fell victim to a Sparrowhawk – that’s nature though. On a happier note - “Blackbirds line up every morning to be fed”, “Two Tawny Owls calling from a tree”, “a Grey Heron on my neighbour’s rooftop”, “a male Kestrel caught a rat and ate it only a few feet from where we were sitting. It was a beautiful bird.” Many thanks to all involved - it’s not too late to join. Just an hour a week counting the birds in your garden. You can register and send results on www.henfieldbirdwatch.co.uk, or on paper (contact Val on 01273 494723) An extra event! As part of Horsham’s Year of Culture, Mike Russell presents ‘A Sussex Village and its Birds’, 7.30pm, Friday 5 April at St Peter’s Church.

The Henfield Community Partnership, the Action for Older People Group, are holding their annual event on the afternoon of 22 May at the Henfield Hall. From 2-4.30pm there will be talks, stalls, a delicious cream tea and a colourful creative collaboration, run by the team who designed the Mosaic Project for the village. It will be a fun-packed afternoon – don’t miss it! Anyone welcome, watch out for more details in the May edition of BN5 Magazine, and posters around the village. Woodmancote Hall public meeting

Following the survey that was sent out to all Woodmancote parishioners over the Christmas period, there was an overwhelming majority of votes to support the newly formed Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) in its plan to obtain a grant of £150,000 from the Parish Council to renovate the Hall. This plan is now being put into operation and the CIO would like to invite all interested parishioners to a meeting in The Pavilion, Blackstone Playing Fields, at 7.30pm on Wednesday 3 April. The CIO has a number of options as to how to use the grant in the best way for the community and wants to discuss these options in an open meeting. We, as the CIO, are all Woodmancote and Blackstone residents and want to introduce ourselves to everyone and to talk about what lies ahead. We need to discuss how we can all work together to eventually produce a community centre that will provide a place for group meetings, activities and fun for all ages, including a licenced venue for weddings and parties. Please come along to support this meeting – refreshments will be provided for all.

‘From Cancer to Coddiwomple’

Earlier this year you may have read an account of Wendy Jennings’ story which was about losing both parents in the same year to cancer and how she tried to cope with that loss. To help her recover she decided to go travelling to Bali and Australia, writing a blog to keep in touch with friends and family back home while she was away. On her return she was encouraged to share her experiences with others by writing a book. The book has now been published and has been very well received. It has been described as “A story of love, loss and daring to dream”. It chronicles her parents’ difficult times with terminal cancer in 2012 and how Wendy re-built her life after their passing. As Wendy says, the purpose of the book is to bring a ray of hope for people who might be having a similar experience. Throughout those difficult times, the family received tremendous care and support from St Barnabas House and George celebrates his centenary in gratitude Wendy would like to help the future Congratulations to Henfield resident George work of the hospice through the sale of her book. Henfield Festival of Gardens & Arts

Over the year’s visitors taking part in the Henfield Festival of Gardens and Arts have noted that the many homes that have front gardens on show have been creatively planted and look amazing in June. Some of these, whether very small or large, may simply have a single tree of interest, or a shrub and climbing roses. Some have adornments and some just planted pots. This year we would like to draw attention to the beauty of our front gardens by including them in our Festival which is taking place on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June. If you, or your neighbours, would like to be part of this and need help to decide, please contact Liz on 01273 491725. We look forward to sharing with you the many opportunities to have food and drink, to walk and meet friends and be astounded by what is on show in nature, art, dance, music! With your participation, you will help make this year’s festival a greater family and friend’s affair for all to enjoy.

WINNER: George Jordan, Stingray class

WINNER: Harrison Sherrin, Sharks class

We hope you like our colourful and creative front cover, beautifully illustrated for us by Alec Ballard from Stingray Class at St Peter’s CE Primary School. Alec’s artwork was one of three winning designs selected by myself, Malcolm Eastwood (Chairman of Henfield Parish Council) and Denise Maurice (Headteacher at St Peter’s) from the wonderful artwork created by Year 3 students. Narrowing our choices down to just three was an incredibly difficult task! Some of the wonderful creations are displayed here, including the two other prize-winning designs by George Jordan from Stingray class and Harrison Sherrin from Sharks class. Part of the brief given to children in Sharks and Stingray classes (Year 3, age 7 and 8) was to create a cover on the theme of St George and England, and to; “Use your imagination - your picture needs to be bright and colourful, exciting and adventurous – we want people who see it to say - Wow!” We are confident that the cover designs produced (during homework time) do indeed have a huge ‘wow’ factor – well done Year 3 and thank you for working so hard and so creatively. The children have been studying St George and the history of why he is England’s Patron

Saint during an extended project. Sharks Class Teacher, Miss Carroll said; “The children have been learning about dragons after a dragon left an egg in their classroom. They performed a whole school assembly to celebrate their work which included a performance of George and the Dragon, therefore this competition complemented the learning perfectly.” The whole school also enjoyed an interesting assembly on the history of St George’s Day created and presented by Pamela Chaston and Arun Agarwal from the Sussex branch of the Royal Society of St George. Arun has arranged a wonderful English Day event happening at the Henfield Hall on Tuesday 23 April, see page 42 for further details. Sadly, we don’t have room to publish all the beautiful and clever designs, but you’ll find them on our website henfieldbn5.co.uk, please take a look and let us know which is your favourite. The three winners received book tokens from Steyning Book Shop from us at BN5 magazine. Many thanks to Malcolm Eastwood and Denise Maurice for helping to judge the competition, and most of all, thank you to all the Year 3 students.

In the seven years since Laura Mills created Oscar Bears Day Care, the nursery has gone from strength to strength! Laura and her team pride themselves on the ‘home-from-home’ environment they offer children within the framework of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Through a wide range of stimulating child-led activities, children are able to develop their physical, social, creative and emotional skills as well as build their communication, language and literacy skills. The costs are all-inclusive (including baby milk, nappy cream, nappies, meals and snacks, as well as activities), enabling parents to budget effectively. “Our children have access to all the usual activities such as: building and constructing, wet play, painting, puzzles, running and climbing, cooking, dressing-up, using technology, and music and movement,” said Laura “but we’re also lucky enough to have the space to offer slightly more unusual activities such as incubating chicks and having local lambs come and visit!” They have recently expanded both the indoor and outdoor environments. The children have access to a fantastic all-weather garden which features a soft play surface, as well as sand and water play areas. The new indoor space now means they have a dedicated room for pre-school age children (3 to 5 years olds), in addition to the existing baby sleep room and family room. Laura said: “We are really excited to be able to expand our offer to include a pre-

school education – we can now offer pre-school activities such as yoga and French as well as classes taught by external specialists such as Forest School, Come Sing With Me and Pro-Tot Sport. The staff have access to their own kitchen and provide freshly prepared food for the children: “We can now incorporate food into the learning experience much more easily,” explained Laura. “For example earlier this year we prepared Chinese food when we celebrated Chinese New Year together.” Exploring the great outdoors still remains a major part of the Oscar Bears experience and, located just off the Albourne Road, the nursery is in the perfect position: “We’re so lucky to have all this beautiful countryside on our doorstep and so we get out and about in it as much as possible” said Laura. Oscar Bears currently has 15 staff, all of whom are DBS checked, trained in paediatric First Aid and most of whom hold the Level 3 Childcare qualification. However, they are looking for more staff to join their friendly team: “We are looking for individuals with a real passion and talent for childcare,” said Laura. “A childcare qualification is desirable, but not essential as it is always possible to train on the job – just give us a call!”

Our common needs

HELP H

enfield Common is owned by Horsham District Council (HDC) who finance its management. Day to day management is under the control of the Henfield Commons Joint Committee (HCJC) whose members include Parish Councillors, District Councillors and coopted, non-voting members. The Common is put to a variety of uses by Henfield residents and it means different things to different members of the community. Dog walkers make up a high proportion of the regular visitors to the Common but there are also horse riders, bird watchers and those who simply enjoy the experience of being out in the woods and open spaces of the Common. There has been growing concern expressed by various stakeholders over the condition of the Common in recent years so the HCJC commissioned the production of a ten-year management plan to define an agreed set of management objectives and provide a long-term schedule of management actions to meet these objectives. Although it is a relatively small site it has quite complex geology with areas of very wet ground and it supports some rare and fragile wildlife. It is no easy task to manage the Common in the best way to conserve its very special nature and maintain its place in the heart of the community. Implementing good and consistent management on the Common will take time but

38 | BN5 Magazine

with the support of the community and with help from specialist advisors it can be done. It is clear however, from the Management Plan that our Common is in need of our help. The management plan sets out a series of recommendations but identifies that the most important management priorities for biodiversity are: • To focus management effort on the open marsh and grassland habitats that have undergone long-term deterioration and are at risk of losing their diverse and special characteristics. As an absolute minimum these areas need to be mown more often, on a more complex rotation with the cuttings always removed. • To manage the reed-bed by rotational mowing with cut material and scrub removal in an attempt to prevent further spread of reed-dominated and woody vegetation. • To control invasive, non-native plant species that are having an adverse impact on native habitats and species. It further recommends that the re-introduction of livestock grazing would be the single most effective and sustainable way to address those management priorities. It would halt the decline of wildlife and restore aspects of its lost diversity in a way that mowing cannot achieve. Some of the www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

rare native wildflowers that are currently only just hanging-on would thrive under a cattle grazing regime and the more widespread species that are gradually being lost from the open grassland areas would have much better conditions to allow them to flourish again. A full copy of the Management Plan can be viewed at the Parish Office www.henfield.gov.uk Discussions have taken place to determine how best to deliver on the plan’s recommendations. The layout of the Common makes it difficult to graze cattle. Cattle were last grazed on the Common some 70 years ago when there was less traffic on the roads and less leisure use of the land. The presence of the A281 road running directly along the edge of the land means that the use of electric fencing alone would not contain cattle adequately (a cow spooked by a dog would crash through such fencing). Proper stock-proof fencing would be needed along the road border which would consist of timber post and rail fencing or post and wire fencing similar to that shown in the picture. Clearly the use of such fencing to enclose the edge of the common would change the open nature of the land. Furthermore there would still be a need for temporary enclosures around the area at different times to contain the cattle to small areas. Grazing would be seasonal and not take place continuously in any one area. Access would have to be maintained at all times which would require gates or stiles suitable for all users. We know that you love the Common and will have views on what you think should be done. Any decisions would be subject to extensive consultation and legal process but there is no

01273 494002

point in commencing that process if the majority are not in favour of the principles. We would like you to read the Management Plan and let us have your views by completing an online survey at www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/HenfieldCommon In particular we would like your views on the following points: 1. Would you be in favour of all or part of the grassland area of the Common, where it adjoins the A281 being permanently fenced? NOTE - this relates to the yellow areas on the map on either side of the road. 2. If access rights were maintained would you consider the possibility of the Common being temporarily fenced in sections to allow cattle to be grazed? Please be assured that no decisions will be made without full discussion with all stakeholders. The comments received in this survey will help those leading the project to get an early feel for the community’s appetite for the future management of the common and what people’s priorities are.

n 23 April, not only do we celebrate St George the patron Saint of England, but it also happens to be the anniversary of the death of Shakespeare, England’s greatest bard - yet another cause for remembrance. I myself, being Indian born and now living in my adopted England, feel very proud of this country and its cultural heritage! This year on Tuesday 23 April we will be celebrating St George’s day in Henfield in style - let us be proud of being English, at least for this one day a year! Children from Year Three at St. Peter’s Primary School took part in a competition to design the front cover of this month’s BN5 Magazine on the theme of ‘Englishness’ and the runners-up are also featured inside the magazine. Children from the village play-groups are taking part in a painting competition and their work will be displayed throughout the village. High Street traders will be decorating their shop windows with bunting and English flags in the week leading-up to the day. Come along to the garden of The Henfield Hall at 4pm on 23rd April to watch a traditional Punch and Judy puppet show (tickets £1 for children and £2 for adults: children must be 42 | BN5 Magazine

accompanied). Originally aimed at adults when it first started in the 16th century, Punch and Judy puppet shows became increasingly popular as a children’s entertainment in the 19th century and became an icon of British seaside resorts in the early 20th century. Then at 7pm the entertainment continues in The Henfield Hall with an evening of English Country Dancing with the Mike Ainscough Band. If you’ve never taken part in English Country dancing before, it’s very social and great fun for all ages! A caller from the band teaches the dances and then calls out the moves to the music. The dancers move round the floor, interacting with other dancers – no prior knowledge or experience is needed! Tickets for the evening are £15 and also include a ploughman’s supper, cash bar, raffle and a performance from the very popular Mythago Morris Dancers who will be telling a story of our very own Sussex dragon. Tickets for both events are available from Village Care on Henfield High Street. All proceeds will be donated to St Barnabas House Hospice Care.

S

t George is the patron saint of England, as well as several other countries including Portugal, Venice, Beirut, Malta, Ethiopia, Georgia, Palestine, Serbia and Lithuania. He was born in about 270 AD in Cappadocia, now in Turkey. George enlisted into the Cavalry of the Roman Army at the age of 17, during the reign of the Emperor Diocletian, quickly gaining a reputation for virtuous behaviour, physical strength, military bearing, valour and handsome good looks. He soon became a highly skilled military tactician and favourite of Diocletian. This was a time of religious conflict between Christianity and Paganism and the Emperor responded by instituting a reign of terror and persecution of Christians. Being himself a devout Christian, George bravely denounced the Emperor for his unnecessary cruelty and injustice, persistently refusing to renounce his religion. Diocletian responded by ordering him to be executed by beheading, which took place at Nicomedia near Lyddia in Palestine on 23 April 303. He was canonised as Saint

George in AD 494 by Pope Gelasius, making him one of the earliest of the Christian martyrs. His tomb is in Lod, Israel. The red cross of St George has its origins in the Crusades of the Middle Ages. Saint George was a popular figure for the Crusaders because of his reputation as a warrior saint. The Knights wore red crosses on their shields and during his Crusade in the 12th century, Richard the Lionheart also placed himself and his army under the protection of Saint George and wore the Red Cross. In 1348 Edward III chose Saint George as the patron saint of his Order of the Garter. In 1415, after the battle of Agincourt, Henry V invoked Saint George as England’s patron saint and declared 23 April to be his principal feast day. The legend of Saint George and the dragon seems to have originated in medieval times. The story goes that there was a dragon living by a fresh water lake near the town of Silene in Libya who had long been ravaging the countryside and demanding maidens as sacrifices. Eventually only the king’s daughter remained and she too was about to be offered. At that moment a knight from the Crusades came riding by on his white stallion. Saint George dismounted, drew his sword and, protecting himself with the sign of the cross, fought the dragon on foot, slew the beast and saved the princess. In response the people of Silene abandoned their pagan beliefs and converted to Christianity. Ever since the middle ages the day of the martyrdom of Saint George has been celebrated in England on 23 April and the story of his slaying of the dragon retold and enacted in drama with lots of fun and games.

T

he Henfield Trails is a new initiative, born from the Parish Council’s work to ensure that our footpaths and bridleways remain navigable in spite of funding cuts at County Council level. As part of this work it became clear that we might be able to create some attractive walking and/or cycling routes around the Parish which would be attractive to both visitors and residents. Making each of these circular with a start and finish point in our High Street should also benefit our business community by increasing footfall. The first trail known as ‘Henfield Common’ is planned to take in the centre of the village, Henfield Common, the Lydds and then back into the village via King James Lane. We applied for some EU funding to create this route but sadly this was unsuccessful. Nevertheless we are planning to push ahead. Clearance work has been completed by our Works Officers on a second route from the village along the Downs Link to Stretham Manor then along the river to Bineham Bridge and back along Hollands Land with a potential wet ‘welly walk’ extension out to Rye Farm. In the longer term we can see the potential for developing up to seven trails, including one very long one which will circumnavigate the parish. What next? We have ten volunteers from the village who are going through a Horsham District

01273 494002

Council training programme to become Trail Designers as part of their Heritage Trails initiative. We are hopeful that two of our trails will be included in the Horsham District trail guide. We intend to add more trails to these first two and publish a local guide too. The output from this work will be maps, trail markers, length and degree of difficulty indicators, and points of interest markers with stories attached. The themes of these stories are still to be developed but they will be based around the development of Henfield as a rural community, our history, heritage and how we have learned over many centuries to co-exist with the natural world and our countryside. We want this to be a community project and are looking for content from all sorts of organisations in the village. So if you have interesting stories about buildings, locations or nature in the parish we would love to hear about them so that our Trail Designers can consider whether they can be included as a trail feature. We may well look to extend written story content into short videos, encouraging people to explore further with local organisations like Henfield Museum. Our future aspiration is to develop new routes for cyclists, walkers and to encourage people to leave their cars at home.

t’s our favourite event in the village calendar and this year it’s going to be a little different on Saturday 13th July – the Summer Fair and Show as you’ve never seen it before! Don’t worry though, you’ll find many of your favourite events, stalls and sideshows. This year the organising team, led by Henfield Community Partnership want to encourage everyone in the village to participate and enjoy a quintessentially Henfield ‘great day out’. So, the message is; you don’t need to have baked before, you don’t need to have made a jar of marmalade, or tried your hand at photography or be a green-fingered marvel, but you can ‘have a go’ and join in with the fun! Have a go at the ‘Henfield Bake-Off’ by making a decorated sponge cake, or a plate of sausagerolls. Or the ‘Henfield Grow-Off’ with a basket of homegrown fruit or vegetables. The key thing is to get involved and enjoy seeing the fruits of your labour on display. Organisers are looking forward to seeing some wonderful creations from our younger participants too, so please encourage your children to rollup their sleeves and get baking and crafting. There’s nothing to stop them entering the main ‘Grow-Off’, ‘Craft-Off’ and ‘Bake-Off’ classes, too! Just turn up on the day (marquee entry times to be published soon) and bring your wonderful creations with you. No need to fill out entry forms and all the classes are free to enter.

01273 494002

It’s not just about the Great Henfield Show Tent, there will be so much to do and see on the day. Bring your pooch along for the fun family dog show, or sit and watch the brilliantly entertaining Sheep Show, who are back by popular demand at the Fair after their appearance in 2015. There will be music from the Patcham Silver Band, as well as Stix Drummers, and plenty of fun with a Human Table-Top Football. This year there’s much more of a ‘foodie’ presence at the Fair. Our fabulous BP Guild will be cooking the best burgers in Sussex and looking after the busiest tent at the show – the beer tent. While the WI tent will be serving traditional tea and homemade cake - essential re-fuelling after a wander around the showground! Newcomers Ginger Rookes will be there with pulled pork and corn fritters, as well as Gelato Gemelli’s homemade Italian ice-cream and Caphe Republic’s Vietnamese street food stall. On top of that, there will be craft stalls from professional artists and some lovely things to buy, as well as some great activities and entertainment brought to you by our local clubs and groups. So, bring on the sunshine and bring on the Henfield Summer Fair and Show! For information contact Carol Eastwood or Elaine Goodyear, Henfield Community Partnership hcpevents@henfieldcp.org

VILLAGE

CARS

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF KEEPING HENFIELD MOVING Henfield Village Cars will be celebrating 20 years of business this year and Robert and Helen would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to the residents of Henfield who have supported them for all these years. “We love being able to live and work in the village - Henfield is ever so friendly and I love that we can do something we enjoy and it be our job.” said Helen.

to be whether it’s a wedding, a party, the shops, a restaurant, to one of the many hospitals, to visit or pick-up a loved one, to collect something, to go on holiday… the list is endless but it’s very satisfying to have been a part of that persons day.” Recent longer trips the team have undertaken have included Wales, York, Devon and even the most westerly point of Cornwall!

It was whilst working for his father’s removal company that Robert bought his first taxi back in 1999, just as something extra to do at the time. His partner Helen, whose background is in customer service, decided to join him in the business in 2006. Business is so busy that three years ago Robert’s younger brother William got his taxi badge to help out and his partner Caroline also joined the team last year, bringing another lady driver to the village. The newest recruit is Tom, bringing the total number of drivers to five.

“It’s lovely to be able to help people out when they can’t drive for whatever reason. Sometimes people have lost their confidence driving and they just want to go for a ride and take in the countryside!” said Robert. “We also feel very privileged that local businesses entrust us with transporting their clients and customers.” They can provide an immediate or overnight courier service to anywhere in the country.

Between them, the team run four vehicles of different sizes including a long-wheel-base 8-seater VW Transporter (perfect for party runs and trips to the airport or station with lots of luggage!); a 6-seater VW Sharan (which also folds down internally as a large estate car); and 2 very comfortable E-Class Mercedes. Helen said: “It’s an incredibly social job and I love helping people, getting them to where they need

Henfield Village Cars are available for hire seven days a week, including Friday and Saturday nights as well as the earliest of early runs in the mornings, rush hours and school run times. They are also designated an ‘approved provider’ by West Sussex County Council to provide transport to schools for vulnerable children. Robert and Helens top tip is try to book your taxi ahead of needing it. “ We’re always asked ‘how soon do I need to book my taxi?’ and we would say - as soon as you know you definitely need it!”

019 is a creative year for Horsham District as communities come together to celebrate culture throughout towns and villages. One initiative is the Edge to Edge stitching project which will give people the opportunity to create handmade bunting for their community in their local church. Artist and facilitator, Luna Russell will lead the adult sessions explained what the project is about: “Edge to Edge aims to celebrate people and places that are connected by the Downs Link. Through a series of workshops based in beautiful churches that are positioned along or close to the Downs Link I will be creating bunting flags with participants. Each flag will be embroidered with imagery and words that represent the maker and the community in which they live, inspired by their local heritage and the changing seasons and uses of the Downs Link. Each set of bunting will be kept at the church for use at future community events.” Following the workshops Luna will create a central flag for each group made from reclaimed copper from the roof of Chichester Cathedral, which is currently being replaced as part of a restoration project. The design of the copper flag will be inspired by the workshops and the people taking part. “I’ll also be running a series of workshops for a group of Young Carers during the summer, We’ll be going out onto the Downs Link to explore and bring back ideas to create bunting

for their youth club.” Luna continued: “I’m really excited by the Edge to Edge project and being part of Horsham District Year of Culture. APRIL 2019 | Health

TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGING

W

hen I was a child my Father was a single-handed GP in Surrey, much like Dr John Squire was here in Henfield. He was on call 24 hours a day and often brought patients to the house or was called-out at night. When on his ‘rounds’ the only way to reach him in an emergency was to phone around all the houses on the list (assuming they had a landline) or hang out a flag at the branch surgery. He knew everyone in the village and was a pillar of the community. He bore a huge burden of responsibility for looking after all of his patients, all of the time. Times have changed almost unrecognisably since then, and with another GP contract announced in February, patients are going to notice more changes. It’s the job of the senior partners, with the help of practice manager Katie Hill and her team, to navigate these changes and keep hold of the really important aspects of care (for example, continuity of care for those patients who really need it), whilst also keeping the practice resilient and in good shape for the future. Why the need for change? Well firstly, no one is prepared to work 24/7, 365 days a year these days. The job of a GP is highly pressured, with constant difficult decisions to be made every few minutes whilst also supervising an extended team of staff. It is extremely difficult to work 8am until 8pm from Monday to Friday, and most GP’s work slightly reduced hours to allow recovery time. We’ve won a ‘Pacesetter’ award for the excellent work we’ve done (led by Dr Olivia Snape) on the mental health of our workforce here in the Practice. Our GP’s work in groups in order to be more efficient, to share daytime emergency calls, to provide complementary expertise and for moral support. However the number of GP’s in the country is dwindling and government funding has been static for 10 years. Every year there is rising demand from patients caused by the aging demographic, patients with several chronic illnesses and rising mental health issues. When local practices close because they are unable to recruit, or cannot manage their finances to pay for enough clinical staff, this has a knock-on effect on neighbouring practices who then have to suddenly take on thousands more patients. We now have a team of clinical and administrative staff managing your care. This actually gives better care because the right people are doing the jobs they’re good at and there is continuity of care within the team. It means the GP’s can oversee several different clinicians, whilst they see patients with complicated symptoms. Another reason to change the way we work is that we recognise that the causes of good

01273 494002

health are much wider than just seeing your GP when you are ill. Much more important is the environment in which you live. For example, there is plenty of evidence that loneliness and lack of social connections are a strong predictor for poor health. Other environmental factors can also affect health including road safety, the number of fast food outlets, air pollution, and types of employment. By working in partnership with the local community we may be able to improve some of these factors, thus preventing some diseases and reducing the burden on the NHS. We have recently held two village brainstorming events in Henfield: ‘Keeping Henfield Healthy’ and ‘Mental Health Matters’. Out of this engagement we have set up Henfield Connector Plus (run by Alex Nevatt at the Haven) with the objective of building up an army of volunteers to provide a ‘befriending service’ and to connect vulnerable people back into the community. So what will change as a result of the new GP contract in 2019? We will have to form GP networks of 30-50,000 patients and given that we already have a strong relationship with Steyning, Storrington and Billingshurst, our initial thought is to join together as Chanctonbury network (47,000 patients). Within the network we are being funded to employ more clinical staff, such as a pharmacist, physiotherapist or mental health worker. As patients you will notice an improvement in the provision of urgent care accessed via 111 after 6.30pm. You may be offered an appointment in Henfield or Steyning up to 8pm or further afield (Pulborough or Shoreham) up to 10pm. We will continue to focus on the frail elderly patients, those in nursing homes and those with chronic diseases such as heart failure, lung disease, and diabetes. We will be providing even more care in the community and less care in hospital. We will start exploring whether video consultations might be of benefit to some. Above all, we will be analysing our own population, and in consultation with the community, trying to provide services that will really benefit our patients. In Henfield we are well ahead of the curve already. It is one of the healthiest areas in West Sussex, and that is perhaps largely as a result of our strong community. Let’s continue to build on it!

I

t has been an exciting first year for Henfield FC’s thriving current under-7’s team, with an impressive score sheet and sponsorship secured from Knight’s Budgens of Henfield. Knight’s Budgens of Henfield is the team’s kit and equipment sponsor for the year and will be featuring a team news board in store so customers can follow all the U7’s latest news. The Henfield U7’s was started last May by FA trained head coach and team manager Tom Wilson. The team has 22 players who are currently enjoying friendly matches against other local teams before playing games in the Horsham District Youth Football League from September. Tom Wilson said: “It has been amazing to see all our players grow in confidence and skills during the season and we are looking forward to playing in our first tournaments in the next couple of months. I am so proud of them all.” He added: “The boys are so thrilled to be playing matches and this excitement reached fever pitch when they were given their Henfield FC kit at a special presentation. They are so proud of their new kit. A huge thanks to Knight’s Budgens of Henfield for being our sponsor.” David Knight, owner of Budgens, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the new Henfield FC U7’s team who are just starting out on their football playing journey and look forward to watching their progress.” The team have also chosen to support local 72 | BN5 Magazine

hospice St Catherine’s in Crawley, by proudly wearing its logo on their shirts and doing fundraising for them. The team’s assistant manager Joe Penfold said: “Our manager Tom’s wife Kate is a community nurse at St Catherine’s, and we also have players whose families have been supported by the hospice, so we know how vital their work is. St Catherine’s is a charity very close to our hearts. We’re looking forward to fundraising for them throughout the rest of this year.” Among fundraising activities that the team will be doing for St Catherine’s Hospice is a sponsored ‘Floss’. Manager Tom Wilson added: “As the players do the ‘Floss’ dance as part of their football training and warm-up each week we thought this would be a great fun way for them to fundraise.” Sophie Peckham, community and events manager at St Catherine’s said: “We’re thrilled that Henfield FC U7s have chosen to support our hospice and to raise awareness of our services. Every year we care for around 2,100 people but it’s only thanks to the support of our community that we can be there for people when they need us the most.” If your son or daughter is in primary school Year 2 and you live in Henfield or surrounding villages and are interested in training with Henfield U7’s, please email tomowilson@yahoo.com

Payroll matters...

The Employment Allowance – what happens when things change part way through the Tax Year? In recent months, HMRC have been chasing employers From April, employers are required to include on for wrongly claiming the employment allowance and payslips the number of hours worked by an employee expecting them to repay up to £9,000. for which they are being paid. This will only apply where the employee’s pay varies, because of actual time worked. Employment Allowance Overview The basic position with the Employment Allowance is Where the amount of wages or salary varies by that if the company is eligible on 6 April, they reference to time worked, the total number of hours can claim the allowance for the whole Tax Year. This worked in respect of the variable amount of wages or means that if they cease to be eligible at any point salary will be shown either as: after 6 April, they should continue to claim for that a single consolidated figure by showing the combined year but not the following Tax Year. This rule applies number of hours worked for which payment is being where a company becomes connected with other made; or separate figures for different types of work or different rates of pay by itemising the figures for companies or becomes part of a group. If a company becomes eligible during the Tax Year, different types of work worked and/or different rates they are able to claim the allowance for the whole Tax of pay. Year. For example, if the only employee becomes the The new order amends section 8 of the Employment only director of a company (with no other employees Rights Act 1996, adding to the list of particulars that on the payroll) during the Tax Year, the company can must be included in the itemised pay statement which continue to claim the Employment Allowance for that an employee has a right to be given.
