ISLAND HIGHLIGHTS

Ħ OBZ BI Ż - Ż EJT

Not quite an ingredient, but the best thing you’ll eat all summer. Fresh Maltese bread with local tomato rubbed onto it and then drizzled in olive oil, salt and pepper, Maltese ġ bejna and capers that magically fill the holes in the bread. Top with the remaining chopped tomato and torn fresh mint or basil. And repeat.

Or Ata

This drink looks like milk from afar, but is the most delicious and refreshing when ice cold; made from almonds, sugar and water. You’ll see this in kiosks around the islands; and yes, you can buy it in bottles to take home and dilute too, taking back memories of your holiday in Malta.

Diving

Diving in Malta is another way to immerse yourself in history. Many wrecks are submerged below the water, some placed strategically, remnants from the past, giving divers a whole new side to see of Malta and Gozo. Many registered schools offer trial lessons and rent equipment.

Lazarus Tiles

Lazarus Tiles is a project that seeks to preserve and document Maltese cement tiles which would otherwise be destined for the landfill. Started by Thomas Camilleri, these colourful and sometimes century-old tiles are sourced from building sites, renovation projects and even skips, before being restored and mounted in steel. That way, after a lifetime of bearing our weight, they can now enjoy their retirement looking at us instead. As always, it’s the stories behind these objects that intrigue Thomas so much and he documents his discoveries online on Instagram (@thelazarusclub) and on Facebook (Lazarus Tiles).

Reach out on social media and visit the Lazarus Tiles workshop in Msida. Also available from Camilleri Paris Mode - Rabat and Sliema.
