BSBI’S CHAI LIGHTS Rabbi’s Corner

Words From the President

Our Annual Meeting this year painted a vivid picture of an active congregation with many, many talented volunteers who give countless hours of their talent and labor to make BSBI the outstanding synagogue that it is. This prompted me to follow up with an article in this bulletin.

Dear Congregants, In Saundie’s words:

In fact, all the work by the wonderful laypeople of BSBI officers, chair-people and volunteers – is done for the purpose of maintaining a shul that can provide a venue for worship, lifecycle events and Torah study. By and large, these activities were not emphasized at the annual meeting, therefore I will take the opportunity of this pre-summer bulletin article to mention some achievements in these areas. Religious services were conducted at BSBI weekdays, Shabbatot and on holidays. That may seem obvious, but the fact is, we are the only traditional synagogue East of the River that can make this boast. So often we find people from other congregations, or those who are still unaffiliated, attending our services when the need arises. We can be proud of providing that spiritually necessary aspect of Jewish life for them. In July, Tisha B’Av was observed with a service and reading of Eicha in the evening. Attendance was good and several laypeople did the chanting. Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur were well attended and many commented on how meaningful they found the services to be. On Succot, even though on weekdays this year, services were conducted and nicely attended on each of the four holy days. The Sukkah was particularly well decorated this year. Next year we will unfurl the Torah scroll. On Hanukkah, the outdoor Hanukkiah helped us fulfill the mitzvah of making the miracle known publicly. Between those two specifically Jewish holy seasons, we hosted the community interfaith Thanksgiving service. This service was revived after a hiatus of nearly 20 years and was an outstanding success. Many religious communities in town participated with us and we had over 250 people in attendance on that Sunday afternoon. Many people, Jews and non-Jews, commented on how meaningful and inspiring the service was. (Cont’d pg. 9)

“Our annual Town of Manchester, Health Department's kitchen inspection was scheduled for last month. Prior to the meeting Mike Wemmell, our Maintenance Engineer, prepared the room. He scrubbed, polished and spit-shined everything! The floors shined like they were new and everything glistened. When our new, very thorough, young, illustrious inspector walked through the kitchen doors and turned the lights on the whole place sparkled. Her face was overcome with a huge happy smile and she stated, "I should take pictures." She then opened the ovens, every cabinet door in the place, and she went as far as to inspect the dishes. She examined the sinks, refrigerator, and dishwasher. She looked under the stoves and cabinets and up into the stove exhaust systems. She even checked the ceilings and walls for cobwebs. When all was said and done she stated, "I really hate to do this but I have to give you the score of 100! I cannot find one thing to fault you on." “Our thanks and appreciation to Mike Wemmell for the fantastic job he did and for getting us through this tough inspector’s visit.” When I heard this news, I felt proud of this high rating! And then I wondered, what if the inspector had gone further than the kitchen….to explore our congregation, just as we did with our self study…explore our services and activity level, our religious school, overall appearance, the interaction between our staff, clergy and our members…. Based on what I see, I think the inspector would have to give us high marks…At our annual meeting we heard a sampling of what we accomplish during the course of a year. It goes without saying that for each report there is a great deal of organization and many hands behind the scenes. If you were at the annual meeting, you heard many of these people thanked. I can tell you first hand that our clergy stand by to help in any way as well as our conscientious staff members. As I wrap up my first year as president I want to thank all the board members for their time, commitment, enthusiasm and support. Of special note, Ed Reilly, our properties VP, has secured the necessary financial amount through our insurance company this month to make the necessary repairs to our building due to road construction nearly a year ago. Thank you Ed for your perseverance! Please refer to Rebecca Rumbo’s column in this bulletin for an update on the Rabbi Search Process. I hope you will join me at Hazzanita’s Party! Risa Filkoff, President

Sisterhood Speaks

Brotherhood Corner

Mimi Kalman, Editor

Our breakfast meeting on May 3rd was preceded by a discussion with Rabbi Porath, who was at BSBI for Torah Study Shabbat and agreed to a last session with our congregation. He is an engaging speaker who led a thoughtful and interesting discussion. After his session, we enjoyed breakfast and then conducted our business meeting. Phil Margolis was nominated to become the next president of the Brotherhood and we approved a number of charitable contributions, including one in support of the upcoming event honoring the Cantor.

What’s Ahead for Sisterhood? Tuesday, June 2, Annual Torah Fund Dessert, 7:00 pm Tuesday, June 22, Sisterhood Board Meeting and Installation, 6:45 pm Friday, June 19th, Kabbalat Shabbat Service in the Berdine Spector Stoltz Garden, 6:45 pm

Thanks to those Brotherhood members who assisted with cooking and cleaning up after the end-of-year barbeque for the Hebrew School. Elections for officer and board positions will take place at our last breakfast meeting of this program year, on June 7th. In addition to Phil’s anticipated election as president, we expect that most other officers and board members will return in their current positions. If anyone would like an increased role in Brotherhood, we can certainly use your help. Please contact Phil or me. The Congregation is invited to join us after the breakfast meeting, at 10:30 a.m., for our speaker, Raz Newman of the JNF, who will speak on Current Events in Israel.

Sunday, August 2, “Medieval Knights” Sunday, August 9, Sally’s Summer Splash, 11:30 am - 3:00 pm

Shabbat in the Garden Warm weather and sunshine have finally arrived; we all thought it would never happen this year. Come celebrate with us on Friday, June 19th, at our Kabbalat Shabbat Service in the Berdine Spector Stoltz Garden, 6:45 PM.

Sisterhood Installation, June 22nd

Our culminating event of the year, and our major fundraiser, is the Todd Abitz Memorial Golf Tournament, which will take place on June 24, 2015. Funds raised through the tournament are split three ways, with two thirds of the money going directly to support the food pantries run by HVCC and MACC Charities. The remaining money is used by the Brotherhood for worthy causes, the most important of which is our own shul. Please consider supporting the tournament through a monetary gift, by donating goods or services for our raffle or auction, and by attending, as a golfer, as a volunteer, or just for the kosher dinner from the Crown, speaker, raffle and auction at the end of the day. Brochures are available in the lobby to sign up or you can visit our web page at www.abitzgolf.com.

We will be installing our new Sisterhood Board members at the June 22nd Board Meeting at 6:45 pm. The meeting is open to all Sisterhood members. Come and meet your new leaders for 2015-2016.

Medieval Knights - August 2nd We are invited to join Manchester Senior Center on a bus trip to New Jersey to enjoy “Medieval Knights” on Sunday, August 2nd.

I also want to remind everyone of two upcoming Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs events. From Thursday, June 11 through Sunday, June 14, the Connecticut Valley Region, of which our chapter is a member, joins with the New England Region to attend The Retreat, a weekend of camaraderie, learning and fun, featuring guest speakers and athletic events. The Retreat is at Camp Ramah in Palmer, Massachusetts. Several of our members have been going for years and have made great friends with men in our region. On July 812, 2015, in sunny Miami Beach, Florida, the FJMC will be holding its biennial convention. The FJMC Convention is an opportunity to learn about the exceptional programming of the FJMC, to engage in uplifting and interesting educational opportunities, and to meet and becomes friends with men from around the country and the world who share your values. Torch Awards are presented at a ceremony during Convention, and our chapter is in the running for an award. Subsidies are available to those interested.

Take a fun time travel back to Medieval times and eat at the banquet the way they did then - no utensils! Watch the “Knights” jousting and other period events. The cost is $93.00/per person or $103.00/per person which gives you better seats and some extra gifts and/or photos. Kosher food is available. RSVP to the Senior Center no later than Friday, June 26th. For further information contact Rima Riedel, rimarainbow@cox.net, (860) 649-8507.

Are You Saving Those Soda Can Tabs? We hope that you are. Sisterhood and BSBI USY'ers are collecting them for Ronald McDonald House fundraising. You can bring all that you have saved in sandwich bags to any of our meetings or you can put them in the box on the bookcase in the BSBI lobby. Please note: tabs ONLY, no bottle caps.

This is my last column as President of the Beth Sholom B’nai Brotherhood. I appreciate all of the help and good will everyone has shown over the past two years, and I join you in supporting the good works of the Brotherhood going into the future.

The tabs are delivered to the Ronald McDonald House in Springfield MA where they are sold and the money helps to support the needs of the house

About The Tournament The Todd Abitz Memorial Tournament is co-sponsored by the Men’s Club of Beth Sholom B’nai Israel, Manchester Area Conference of Churches (MACC Charities) and Hockanum Valley Community Council (HVCC). This charitable effort was inspired by Todd Abitz, who was a member of B’nai Israel and who was instrumental in starting and sustaining a charity golf tournament to benefit the hungry locally and in Israel. Todd was a popular and dedicated member of the B’nai Israel Men’s Club, who chaired the Golf Tournament in 1998 and 1999. The BSBI Men’s Club honors Todd’s memory by co-sponsoring this golf tournament, named in his memory, to raise funds for charitable causes. We are certain that Todd would be pleased at what’s transpired since his passing. Tournament Proceeds will be divided among the Hockanum Valley Community Council and MACC Charities, for use in helping families in crisis with emergency food, clothing and shelter, and BSBI Men’s Club, for distribution to additional charitable causes of its choosing. We appreciate your support and encourage you to join us. Thanks in advance for helping us make this year’s tournament a success! 6

Update on Rabbi Search – by Rebecca Rumbo Dear Congregants, You last heard from me in February, when I outlined the search process for a new rabbi followed by Conservative synagogues. I’m writing now to bring you up to date on our progress. First of all, after many months of drafting and revision, we have completed the self-study required by the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ), the umbrella organization of Conservative shuls. The self-study, which I described in the February article, was over 20 pages long when we completed it. I composed an initial draft, and with the help of President Risa Filkoff and her group of advisors, revised it multiple times until all were satisfied that it was both accurate and upbeat. This is crucial, because the self-study is, in effect, our job description. Rabbis seeking synagogue positions read through similar documents posted by shuls all over the country, and decide on that basis where to send their applications. In writing and revising our statement, we came to understand clearly that a rabbi search is a two-way street. Yes, we are looking for certain characteristics in a successor to Rabbi Plavin—but we also know that candidates for the position are seeking certain characteristics in a synagogue community, too. As we worked together on the self-study, we began to see the many positive aspects of life here at BSBI. In her conversations with USCJ advisors over the past few weeks, Risa was reminded many times that our location, halfway between Boston and New York, is a desirable one. Despite the last few winters here in the Northeast, our part of the country is one where many rabbis prefer to live. In addition, we are only a half-hour away from three Jewish day schools, which also makes us competitive. (And of course, there’s the Crown Market. Need I say more?) Besides our geographical advantages, there is our greatest advantage: our congregation. Nearly two years ago, members of our Strategic Planning team met with a member of the Rabbi Search Committee from Beth El synagogue in New London. They had just completed their successful search for a new rabbi, and because their demographics resemble ours very closely, we were eager to learn from their experience. He told us that BSBI is highly competitive in the rabbi “market” because we have so many congregants who can lead services and read Torah and Haftorah. Although we at BSBI tend to take these skills for granted, evidently our willingness and ability to contribute to services is unusual. Our completed self-study has been sent to the Joint Placement Commission (the job placement office) of the Rabbinical Assembly, and will be made available to job candidates as of July 1. (They follow a July-to-June job placement calendar.) Our hope is that we will receive some high-quality applications during the summer or early fall, conduct preliminary interviews via Skype, and bring the best candidates to BSBI for on-site interviews after the High Holidays, in October and November. However, we have been told that many candidates wait until later in the fall to apply for jobs, and that we may need to be flexible as to our timeline. If we don’t receive the number or quality of applications we expect in the fall, we will of course extend the search into the winter. As with all aspects of life, we make plans, but we’re keeping an open mind. I also need to let you know that Risa has appointed a Search Committee of twelve people, six men and six women, from both shuls of origin (TBS and CBI) for a good balance of age, experience, and talent. The Committee includes some past presidents, some members of the Board of Directors, and some members from the congregation at large. Her plan has been to assemble a group of people who are representative of our community, but who have expertise in the wide range of areas needed to guide us through the search. As we get closer to actual interviewing, some of these folks will be needing help with planning and logistics. If you’re interested in participating, be sure to watch for announcements later this summer. In the meantime, keep the future of BSBI in your thoughts and prayers! 7

Rabbi’s Corner Continued Our Friday nights the Kabbalat Shabbat service continued to struggle. Attendance was poor and in some cases we did not even have a minyan so that those who wished to say Kaddish were unable to fulfill that mandate. The service time was changed but no time seemed to be attractive. I would be interested in hearing any ideas people may have on this subject. Purim was happily observed this year with many children and adults attending the evening service and abbreviated Megillah reading in costume. Our community Seder was again a great success. Elly Cohen, the wife of our chairman Steve, became very ill weeks before the event and it was wonderful to see how others stepped up to the plate to fill the void of leadership. Passover services, this year on weekends, were well attended all four days. In this coming year, the challenge before us will be to carry on the high level we have achieved without the talented help of our Cantor Anita Schubert as she moves on to warmer climes. Thankfully, we have always been a congregation with heavy lay involvement, and that will stand us in good stead. It should be mentioned to her credit that Cantor Anita always encouraged laypeople to act as prayer leaders and she trained a wonderful corp of Torah readers. That is not the case in every shul where often the Cantor is jealous of his or her status and does not give that opportunity to lay people. On the Continuing Education front, we had a banner year. The greatest innovation was the reinstitution of the Institute for Basic Judaism. This program serves the entire Greater Hartford area Conservative community and several of the rabbis in the area share the teaching burden with me. This 20 session program began with 18 students and 15 saw it to its conclusion. The classes met at the Solomon Schechter Day School in West Hartford, and that venue may well account for the stellar enrollment. This program will run again in the 2015-2016 season. In January, Dr. Cheryl Greenberg of Trinity College taught three sessions on topics in American Jewish History. This was very well received. I taught several mini-courses: Psalms for Jews and Christians (together with the Lutheran Church), a Lunch and Learn Series on topics in the news, four sessions on Maimonides writings, and three sessions on the content of the prayerbook. All were well attended. The Cantor taught two courses with great success: Prayerbook Hebrew for Comprehension and “Beyond Kashrut.” Finally, a highlight this year was the Sisterhood Torah Shabbat on which Rabbi Jonathan Porath taught several sessions to great acclaim. For next year we will have Rabbi Daniel Nevins, Dean of the JTS Rabbinical School. Looking back on the accomplishments of BSBI in the fields of Torah and Prayer, I am proud that we excelled in exactly what a synagogue should be doing. Rabbi Plavin

Bayer Chapel Dedication On Saturday, April 22, there was a dedication of the verse from Psalm 16 in the Bayer Chapel. The beautiful crescent-shaped glass piece with Hebrew inscription along with the plaque is a beautiful addition to our chapel. This unusual work of art, affixed to the Holy Ark, is available for dedication to honor or memorialize a loved one. For more information about this opportunity, please contact Rabbi Plavin. 20
