Faithcraft On the door of my daughter’s home is a sign that reads, “Vote as if your rights depend on it.” I love that sign. Ever since I finally attained voting age I don’t think I have missed even a handful of elections, and most of those were because I just didn’t know about a local special election. I don’t care how “significant” an election is; in my mind, they are all important. And I don’t just show up to my polling place; I spend sometimes hours preparing for an election. I want to know who supports which side of a referendum. Who has endorsed a candidate? What are the positions of each candidate on the issues that are important to me? I am not a “one issue” voter. I always go with the candidate who stands for the most issues I care about. The fact that foreign countries tried to change the outcome of the last Presidential election is well known. But how did they “steal” our election? Did they hack our voting machines to change the number of votes? Nope. Did they have people ineligible to vote come to certain precincts? No again. Did they bribe vote counters to adjust the votes in a state or two? Didn’t happen. So how did they do it? They spread false stories through social media knowing that there were enough people who go to the polls uninformed about the issues that they could manipulate their votes just by confusing them. The fact that there are many sites on the internet devoted to “urban myth busting” should remind us that there is little on the internet that should be believed without checking on it first. We expect that the news outlets will check their stories before they publish or broadcast them. But given the amount of false sites, fake sites, secret sites and “astroturfing” (the name given to sites that take a fake story and then repeat it over and over until it has gone “viral”) there is almost no way we can ever be sure that we are getting a real story and not something made up for a nefarious reason. So what can we do? I employ several tests to stories that I find hard to believe. First I check its age. There are stories on the internet that have been around for years and they still find new people who believe them long enough to repeat them. If we get such a story from a friend, we do need to tell them they have been fooled. If they are wise, they will send out a retraction. I also only take my news from sources I have already vetted as reliable. Since I know some of these sites have a point of view they promote, I have several sites from different points of view, liberal, conservative, Jewish, secular, etc. and I compare what they have to say. Much of what we read is just filling up space. When I read the news I keep asking “What is new here? What is here that I need to care about? How much of this is “fluff” and really unimportant no matter who is saying it?” (It used to be “All the news that’s fit to print.” Now it is “all the news that’s print to fit”; after all there is only so much time to give to the news). My final test is to see what people I know and whose opinions are important to me are saying. I have colleagues, mentors, and friends who I trust to help me see the sides on an issue that I might have missed. Of course, if I really want to vet a story, I just repeat it from the bima and a dozen people will come up to me after the service to tell me I am out of my mind. The point of all of this is that voting is hard work. We are being asked to make decisions about our future and how our representatives will represent us in the years ahead. Everything we care about in this country depends on us voters, and we are responsible for being informed voters. I will never tell you who to vote for, but I do insist that everyone gets up and gets out to vote. If foreign agents want to meddle in an election, they will not do it with my permission. I know who I am. I know what I stand for, and I go out and vote as if my rights depend on it. I hope you will too. Rabbi Randall Konigsburg

Notes from the Cantor

Words from the President

Please feel free to contact The first half of our shul's name is Beth me directly at Sholom, and many of us look forward to philipmargolis@icloud.com spending Shabbos together. Yet if you come here on a Friday night or a or at 860-657-9951. Saturday morning, someone is likely to wish you a "Shabbat shalom." Most of us In his State of the State Address earlier this year Connecticut do this without thinking much about it, Governor Ned Lamont said “Giving but if someone asks, we are likely to say back is the highest form of that the former is the Ashkenazic pronunciation of the word, citizenship. I am excited about while the latter is the Sephardic pronunciation. This is true up to your willingness to partner with us a point, but it only captures a small part of the linguistic and to invest in our future. I am confident we will do great cultural history attached to these two variants of Hebrew. things together.

The truth is that there are multiple Ashkenazic pronunciations and multiple Sephardic ones, which vary depending on geographical region. And what is most often referred to as "the Sephardic pronunciation" (i.e. the one spoken in Israel) is actually a combination of some Sephardic and some Ashkenazic features. It developed in the 20th century along with the modern Hebrew language, and spread due to a deliberate effort to make modern Hebrew the standard form of Hebrew. As a result, today most schools that teach the Hebrew language will teach it according to the modern Israeli pronunciation. There is a common perception that the Israeli pronunciation is more "authentic" or "correct" than the Ashkenazic one, and that Ashkenazic Hebrew is outdated or a relic of an older time. Some even go so far as to modify liturgical melodies that were written for an Ashkenazic pronunciation, attempting to make them fit the sounds and stress patterns of Israeli Hebrew. But in fact, both of these pronunciation systems are authentic dialects of Hebrew, along with many others that are less commonly heard.

Roy and Barbara Dalio heard the call. The Greenwich couple kick-started an initiative to engage Connecticut high school students with a $100 million donation. Together with state funds and private donations, the state hopes to create a $300 million effort. They heard the call, and they stepped up. I’m thankful that so many people step up every day at BSBI. Every year about 40 members donate $1,000 or more above their membership contributions to join our Hineni Society. Each month, dozens of congregants choose to donate to BSBI to honor a friend, relative or someone who has passed.

And every day, people step up with their time to volunteer and make a meaningful difference in our congregation. Some are visible, like our talented core of Torah readers or the leadership of our Brotherhood or Sisterhood. Many Growing up in a primarily Ashkenazic community with one others help behind the scenes, such as the individuals who proofread, stuff and address our bulletin, organize Kiddush Ashkenazic and one Sephardic parent, I spoke a combination dialect. I used Israeli Hebrew in conversation and when praying, or make sure things work around the building.

but I used the Ashkenazic pronunciation for common words like Shabbos and tallis. In cantorial school, my Hebrew professor acknowledged the legitimacy of both systems, but advised us to choose one system and be consistent. Full of indignation, I went up to him and explained that my hybrid system was part of my cultural background as a mixed Ashkenazic-Sephardic Jew. His response: "Well, then, that's a consistent system." And so I embraced the hybrid system. I say both "Shabbat shalom" and "Gut Shabbos." I pronounce most liturgy in the Israeli style, but I don't try to make melodies fit into a style that they weren't made to fit. And I am happy to hear others speaking and leading in either style. There are many dialects of Hebrew, and they are all valid, all authentic, all rooted in their own cultural time and place. Cantor Sarah Bolts 4

While we have many great donors and volunteers, our community would be that much stronger with more help. We need to raise more money so that we can maintain the services, educate our next generation and keep our building secure and in good operating condition, today and in the future. Most people reading this could not afford to foot this bill. However, perhaps there are a few who could jump-start our effort. Little changes can also make a big difference. Have you given the same donation amounts to recognize occasions or during the high holiday fundraising appeal? Raising donations from $18 to $25 or even $36, or increasing a high holiday gift 10% would make a large positive impact. Continued on page 8

RLWRS Update Upcoming Events: Saturday, May 18: School Shabbat and Luncheon Sunday, May 19: Last Day of Religious School & School BBQ Please let me know if you are aware of anyone interested in enrolling their children in religious school for the 2019-2020 school year. It is up to all of us to work together to grow our community. After services, on our last day of religious school Iwould like to meet with the parents to hear your feedback, suggestions and share exciting upcoming plans. Our family Passover program included a Bibliodrama set in the desert leaving slavery behind and acting out different scripts. How did we feel when we saw the sea part? Was Moses a good leader? How did our lives change? What did we bring for the sojourn? We wrote invitations to our seder thoughtfully choosing who we would invite and what we would want them to learn. Finally, we had a grab bag of Pesach items and we shared their importance. Kindergarten and First Grade have worked hard to learn their aleph-bet as a basis to begin reading Hebrew. They have also been learning the importance of the Passover story and made afikomen covers. Hopefully, they had a turn to participate in asking the four questions at your seder. Grades 3 and 5 were excited to begin using our new I-pads to learn how the melody for the prayer Ein Keloheinu sounds in Jewish communities around the world. Knowing that the words stay the same regardless of the melody students were able to record their favorite Ladino, Hebrew or English version. Students learned to be able to identify the Passover Mitzvot including telling the story of the Exodus, the importance of liberation and understanding the importance of the individual items on the seder plate.

Grades 6-7 learned about the history of migration of Ashkenazic Jews during the early to mid 20th century. Students are working on L'dor V'dor Project to be put on display the last day of school. This is a great opportunity to connect generations in your family. Please help your students gather the information they need. Hebrew classes are practicing Adon Olam, Aleynu, and Ein Keloheinu in preparation for leading the congregation during school Shabbat. We all know that regular attendance is essential for learning and becoming comfortable with our service. Music class has been enjoying Passover songs culminating with our family program where we all enjoyed the music together. Feel free to join us at the end of each class on Thursday and Sunday when you pick up your students. Ellen Frankel 5

BSBI Community In The Lobby

YOU’RE INVITED! TO OUR TENTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION! Where were you on August 13, 2009?

Written by Sissy Seader Submitted by Marilyn Lassow

Many of us were here in our very own building, to vote on the merger between Temple Beth Sholom and Congregation B’nai Israel! On that auspicious day, both congregations voted unanimously to become Beth Sholom B’nai Israel. The Certificate of Merger was signed by President Ira Fink and President Gayle A. Block after months of meetings to plan the “marriage” of the two shuls. On the evening of August 13the 24th of Av—we joined together to celebrate the beginning of a beautiful friendship and a new family. While the “wedding” did not take place until September, when the sifrey Torah from CBI were carried in procession to BSBI, the anniversary of our union will be marked this year on Sunday, August 25th (the 24th of Av in this year’s calendar). We’ll celebrate, beginning at 5:30 p.m., with a silent auction, dinner, music, reminiscences, and photos of our family journey. RSVP forms will be included in the June/July and August bulletins (and online). We can’t wait to celebrate!

I pondered if it is really right To recite a poem on Shabbat night But, I said to relax don’t get uptight So I offer you, without being slobby, My little verse called-“It’s in the lobby”. When at Temple you feel down and out Just let us know-we’ll hear your shout And help you better as we scout Happenings found “in the lobby”. When a course sounds really good But joining is something hard to do We’ll all help you to see it through With directions found “in the lobby”. When you are informed of upcoming dinner But to the Temple you are a beginner We guarantee the food won’t make you thinner Read about it “in the lobby” When there’s a meeting you wish to take place And having trouble finding space News information might help your case You can read about it “in the lobby”. There are all sorts of sheets With abundance of news Far too many to set on the pews But notices and such you must not lose Always right there “in the lobby”. There’s nothing special about that place Except it’s roomy with plenty of space But for us it still remains the base Cause all notices surely are “in the lobby”.

BSBI Annual Meeting

I believe our Rabbi, so full of grace Often pronounces with just in case How to find the news with times and dates But frankly I think our Rabbi has a new hobby Mobilizing us all to say “it’s in the lobby”.

May 14, 2019

Save the date and plan to join us on May 14th for the BSBI Annual Meeting. Minyan will be held at 6:30 pm that evening and will be followed by a light deli dinner and the Annual Meeting. Please RSVP online at www.myshul.org or email programming@myshul.org by May 7th if you plan on coming for dinner, and bring $8 per person to cover the cost of the food. Please let us know if you need a vegetarian option.

All are welcome to the meeting, but you must preregister to eat! 6

AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) 2019 Seven BSBI members represented the congregation at the annual AIPAC Policy Conference in late March. AIPAC is a bipartisan organization of U.S. citizens committed to strengthening, protecting and promoting the U.S.-Israel relationship. The conference features prominent speakers, politicians, breakout learning sessions on a wide range of topics, inspiring stories of Israeli innovation and U.S.-Israeli cooperation, and lobbying Congress. This year's lobbying agenda encouraged our congressional delegation to support aid to Israel, support enhanced U.S.-Israel Cooperation and oppose boycotts of Israel. Israeli elections was a popular topic, and attendees heard remarks from Blue and White Party and opposition leader Benny Gantz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. If you're interested in attending the conference next year (March 1-3, 2020), there is a $200 discount available for a limited amount of time. See the Rabbi for more information.

Pesach Project a Wonderful Success

Jessie’s Garden

Thanks to the generosity of the BSBI Community the Pesach Project this year surpassed last year’s total by over a thousand dollars, raising $9,416. This means that we can replenish the coffers of our Sisterhood so they can continue to enhance our building and provide programming as well as being able to send more than $5,600 to Leket and Mazon to help in the great battle to combat hunger.

The committee has decided this year to let the soil for Jessie’s Garden rest. After numerous problems with our produce last year, it was decided to take a year off. The soil will be tested to see if there is something we should do.

In lieu of the garden, it was decided to do some planting of Hosta or other shade plants in the small garden by the bench, in the front 7,839 Passover greetings were sent from one member to another. Over 100 member families of the synagogue. It was thought a good participated this year. We appreciate all those time to do this would be on Spring Cleaning th who donated and want to particularly thank our 12 Day on May 5 . sponsors who sent $250 each to include the entire If you are available to help on this day please congregation and staff in their greetings.

Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, is the 27th day of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar. The full name of the day is Yom Hashoah Ve-Hagevurah, which means the "Day of (remembrance of) the Holocaust and the Heroism which marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The Rockville Public Library has one of the largest Holocaust collections available in a public library in the State of Connecticut. The former Congregation B’nai Israel, Vernon, CT, donated the Dan LeBlanc collection from their library when they disbanded in 2009. Since that time Mr. LeBlanc has continued to add to this already impressive collection. BSBI also has an extensive Holocaust collection, The Halina Wind Preston Holocaust Collection. Both libraries are a great source for information and history of the Holocaust. BSBI will commemorate Yom Hashoah on May 1, 2019 with the BSBI Brotherhood Yom Hashoah program. Ari Hartstein will speak about his family’s connection to the Holocaust.

I would like to express my gratitude for everyone who supported me for the Brotherhood Keeper of the Flame ceremony on April 7th.

Words from the President continued Similarly, we need people who can help. Here are a few ideas:  Interfaith effort – We need a committee to review language on our website and in other print materials with an eye to making sure that we are as welcoming as possible to interfaith families. We may want to create dialogue or programming that help us be more inclusive or help families with their concerns.  Fundraising –We need to expand our fundraising and are looking for new ideas, particularly reaching outside our building.  Membership – We need people to brainstorm ideas about finding new members, calling prospects and making connections when they join. These are just a few ways where we could use your help. So, if you don’t have $100 million to spare, I understand. I urge you, however, to hear this call. If you want to discuss any of these opportunities or have other ideas, contact the Rabbi or me. B’shalom, Phil Margolis, President 8

Sidonia’s Thread - The Exhibit Sunday, April 7, 2019

What’s Ahead for Sisterhood? Tuesday, May 14, 1:30 pm Knit & Kvetch Tuesday, May 28, 7:30 pm Sisterhood Board Meeting Monday, June 17, 7:30 pm Hadassah/Sisterhood Book Group

Kitchen Notes Have you had a tour of the kitchen lately? It’s got new almost everything. Appliances, flooring, wall coverings, lighting fixtures, and paint. It is bright, shiny and very clean. If you or your group use it, please clean up after yourselves so that it can stay that way and so we will all be able to enjoy it for many years.

Although several of our members visited the "Sidonia’s Thread" exhibit prior to April 7th, ten of us went together on that date. It was wonderful not only to view the very well-made garments and the beautiful fabrics that were used, but to realize the love that Sidonia put into making them for her daughter, and that Hanna has kept them all.

Hanna Marcus answering questions at the exhibit

A big thank you to Dave and Allene for the great job helping out with the whole kitchen project, especially the painting and cleaning. Please ask me for any assistance or questions you have about using the kitchen, and especially if you are interested in baking. We may have some staple items, so please ask before you shop. Thank you, Stacey Poutre stacey@poutres.com

Sisterhood Speaks Continued Knit & Kvetch

Hadassah/Sisterhood Book Group - Monday June 17

We will be meeting this month in the BSBI library on Tuesday, May 14, at 1:30 pm. If you are making an afghan for us please make it at least 36 x 48 inches. Remember we can always use yarn or monetary donations to continue our mitzvah. It doesn't have to be a huge amount; $5.00 goes a long way towards buying yarn. We do appreciate all donations of yarn, however please no wool. Our items need to be machine washable so we can only accept 100% acrylic. Please make sure that all donation checks are made out to BSBI Sisterhood and marked "Knit and Kvetch" on the memo line. They can be left in the BSBI office for us. Any questions, call me at 860-649-6551 or at IRANNEFINK@AOL.COM. Anne Fink

Our group had a very stimulating discussion about The Aleppo Codex this past month. We hope you will join us for our next meeting at BSBI on June 17 at 7:30, when we will discuss Lucky Us, by Amy Bloom. Copies of the book will be placed on hold for us at the Mary Cheney library reference desk. “Brilliantly written, deeply moving, fantastically funny, Lucky Us introduces us to Eva and Iris. Disappointed by their families, Iris, the hopeful star, and Eva, the sidekick, journey across 1940s America in search of fame and fortune. Iris's ambitions take them from small-town Ohio to an unexpected and sensuous Hollywood, across the America of Reinvention in a stolen station wagon, to the jazz clubs and golden Come Walk With Us, Again and Again Unfortunately, we won’t be walking in May because mansions of Long Island. With their friends in high and low places, Iris and Eva stumble and it will be Memorial Day weekend. But we thought we’d share pictures of April’s walk. We saw deer and shine through a landscape of big dreams, scandals, betrayals, and war. Filled with gorgeous writing, memorable characters, and ducks, never know what we might find! surprising events, Lucky Us is a thrilling and resonant novel about success and failure, good luck and bad, the creation of a family, and the pleasures and inevitable perils of family life. From Brooklyn's beauty parlors to London's West End, a group of unforgettable people love, lie, cheat, and survive in this story of our fragile, absurd, heroic species.” Happy reading! Brotherhood Corner Carl Mandell, Brotherhood President

Our monthly Breakfast Meeting was held on April 14, and Ken Wichman and Phil Margolis spoke about this year’s AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) convention. May’s speaker, May 5, will be Scott Selig, UCONN Hillel Director. Scott will discuss BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) on campus. In addition to our monthly breakfast meeting on April 14, our Keeper of the Flame event took place on April 7 at the Emanuel Synagogue in West Hartford. This event is a part of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs. This year’s recipient was our club President, Carl Mandell. May 1 is our Yom HaShoah Program. This year’s speaker is our own Brotherhood member and Treasurer, Ari Hartstein. Ari will speak about his family’s connection to the Holocaust. If you have not yet returned a donation for your yellow candle, it is never too late to do so. Our June Breakfast Meeting will take place on June 2. The Brotherhood will also do the cooking for the last day of Hebrew School this year. Volunteers are welcome. We look forward to seeing you at our events.

June 12 is our Annual Abitz-Angel Golf Tournament. Items for raffle, as well as volunteers, are still needed. Great news is that our Golf Tournament has secured a celebrity speaker and golfer for the June 12th AAMGT event. Local celebrity newscaster and Connecticut legend, Al Terzi, will join us for a fun filled day of Golf, Fun and Food. Al will assist us with an auction where we have dozens of great prizes that have been donated in addition to a raffle. For golfers, we have several on course events like closest to the pin, 50/50 raffle, longest drive and chance to putt for a Hawaii vacation or Hole-in-One for a new Toyota (Courtesy of Lynch Toyota in Manchester). Those who don't golf can join us for a delicious catered Kosher dinner. Our partner again this year is Connecticut Children's Medical Center/Pediatric Oncology Unit. Last year, we donated a check for $10,000 for their wonderful work. Hopefully with everyone's help, we can give an even bigger gift this year. Please come and support the tournament, volunteer on the day of the tournament or help us find golfers or sponsors who would like to support our efforts. Brotherhood Corner Continued Carl Mandell, Brotherhood President

Brotherhood in Action 2019 Thank you The Manchester Brotherhood in Action Breakfast, held on February 24, 2019, was a huge success, thanks in large part to the generous support from the BSBI community. The breakfast is a long-standing, charitable effort that helps families of children within our community who experience life-altering illnesses. Representatives from BSBI Brotherhood help run this annual event in partnership with other Manchester fraternal organizations (Knights of Columbus, Masons and UNICO). Well over 300 persons attended the breakfast, including many from BSBI. Several BSBI members were also volunteers at the event, and 83 members generously contributed a total of $1,327 in response to our January tickets mailing. Many others contributed through advertising and on-site ticket purchases and donations. On Sunday, March 13, Brotherhood In Action presented the proceeds from the Breakfast event to the families of Nate Rosario and Xavion Williams ($3,700 each).

Nate Rosario

Xavion Williams

We, the BSBI representatives to Manchester Brotherhood In Action, say Todah Rabbah to all BSBI congregants who generously supported this year’s Breakfast event. Respectfuly, Steven Cohen, Glenn Hauer, Harold Meyer, Calvin Vinick, and Spin Zucker.     

Leave a Jewish Legacy How Can We Help? The BSBI Endowment Foundation has periodically published Bulletin articles about legacy giving and our collective obligations to future and current congregants. The by-laws of the Endowment have been changed to allow greater flexibility in the way the Endowment can help current and future donors reach their philanthropic goals. In addition to traditional endowment funds created in support of BSBI, we would like to offer several examples of recent donations to the BSBI Endowment that have taken advantage of this enhanced flexibility. The recent donations fall in to three broad categories: 1) Payment of a pledge over time, 2) Spend down fund over a period of years; and 3) the Endowment Foundation serves as custodian of Synagogue funds while the Synagogue remains the owner of those funds. Payment of a pledge over time: One family wanted to establish a “Perpetual Hineni” fund which requires a minimum donation of $25,000. Rather than donating a lump sum, the donor decided to contribute $5000/year from their IRA using the tax advantages associated with directly donating the RMD [Required Minimum Distribution] to the Endowment, for 5 years. While the fund is being established, they continue to make their yearly Hineni contributions. Once they have donated a total of $25,000 to the Endowment all future Hineni contributions will be made by the Endowment, in perpetuity, on behalf of the family. In addition, they will receive perpetual recognition of their endowment in support of the Synagogue once their fund reaches a minimum commitment of $25,000. The family can increase the fund in the future to be eligible for the designation of “Perpetual Hineni C’hai” Spend down fund: One donor family wanted to have a meaningful impact on summer camp scholarship. They donated a lump sum to the Endowment that is to be spent down over 10 years. This allows the yearly contribution to camp scholarships to have a greater impact than the usual 4% spend rate used by the Endowment for gifts given in perpetuity. This does not preclude additions to be made to the fund to increase the amount available to be allocated each year or to extend the life of the fund. Endowment as custodian of Synagogue Funds: One donor family wanted to pre pay synagogue dues and Hineni several years in advance. Their motivations were multiple but included the fact that by making a lump sum payment they could achieve certain tax advantages that would not be available if they paid their dues and Hineni contributions on a yearly basis. The Synagogue had asked the Endowment to invest the lump sum in the interim. Since these funds are not subject to the distribution rate imposed by the Endowment by laws the Synagogue may ask for all or part of these funds at any time.

We hope that these examples of imaginative ways to structure a donation to the Endowment or the Synagogue will stimulate you to examine your own charitable giving and motivate you to consider contributing to the BSBI Endowment in the tax advantaged ways that are most suitable to your needs and at the same time provide support for the Synagogue and future generations. As always, we recommend you speak with your advisor(s) prior to making any decision to ensure that it is in your best financial interest. If you are interested in learning more about giving opportunities you may reach out to either Roy Filkoff or Jeff Wasser at BSBIendowment@myshul.org Sincerely, Jeff Wasser, MD President BSBI Endowment Foundation 14

BSBI has been given the opportunity to accept donations of vehicles through a partnership with Vehicles For Charity to process donated vehicles. Consider donating your unwanted vehicle in support of BSBI. It is easier and faster than selling it on your own, and you may qualify for a tax deduction! Donors say it is a satisfying way to make a larger donation than they normally could. Other vehicles accepted by this program include: unwanted car, truck, boat, motorcycle, RV or recreational vehicles. For more information go to: https://www.vehiclesforcharity.org

We have now made the switch to the new Siddur Lev Shalem! Similar to the Machzor Lev Shalem we use on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, Siddur Lev Shalem includes informational side notes and extra readings on each page to help everyone get more out of Shabbat tephillot (prayer). We are now offering opportunities to dedicate these siddurim in honor of people or events in our lives or in memory of loved ones. A siddur can be dedicated for just $50 a book. If you would like to see a copy of the new siddur, they are available for inspection at the synagogue.

About The Tournament The Abitz-Angel Memorial Tournament is sponsored by the Men’s Club of Beth Sholom B’nai Israel to raise funds for charitable causes. Our efforts are inspired by Todd Abitz, who was a member of Congregation B’nai Israel and was instrumental in starting and sustaining a charity golf tournament. Todd was a popular and dedicated member of the B’nai Israel Men’s Club, who chaired the Golf Tournament in 1998 and 1999. The Tournament was originally renamed in his memory. William “Bill” Angel played in the tournament for most of its existence and contributed generously to it for many years. Bill was an avid sportsman and high school football coach. Bill and his wife Linda, along with their children Melanie and Derek, were members of Temple Beth Sholom. Bill passed away in September, 2017 from a brain tumor. His sense of humor, energy and compassion for family, friends and all activities that he participated in will be greatly missed by all. He asked that memorial donations go to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center Foundation for Pediatric Oncology. That is why we are partnering with Connecticut Children’s again this year as a major beneficiary of this tournament.
