Call the Rabbi! Rabbi Konigsburg visits the local hospitals on a regular basis. An important part of his duties is to bring comfort and healing to those who are sick. Due to privacy laws, the hospitals can’t tell him if one of our members has been admitted. He could be just down the hall, but if he doesn’t know someone is there, he will not know to make a visit. Please call the Rabbi if you or someone you know is in the hospital so a timely visit can be made: 860-643-9563

How do you thank 50 people? You write them a card or send an email expressing your gratitude. How do you thank 100 people? You post your gratitude on your Facebook page where all can see it. How do you thank 200 people? Perhaps you can send an e-card to every email address you have. But how can I thank the over 300 people who offered their condolences when I needed the support of my community? There were young people and older people and even some children who heard what had happened and gave me a hug. There were people from all walks of life, working, retired; and then there were the Rabbis from across the country who extended their care to me. There were members of different congregations whose lives crossed my own even more than a dozen years ago, and still they remembered me and sent me their love and concern. There were the many people who sent donations to a wide variety of organizations, including BSBI, wishing me consolation and honoring my mother. There is a large stack of condolence cards that sits on my desk. There is the list of people who attended Shiva to offer me words of support both in Florida and in Manchester. There are the many people who sent food and who baked cakes and who sent chocolate (!!) because they wanted me to feel a bit better in my time of sadness and grief. And then there were those who came to my home to make a minyan so I could say Kaddish during the week after my mother died. Almost every day, now two months after the funeral, there are still cards arriving, donations being made and people stopping me as I perform this holy work of being a Rabbi, to offer me condolences, because they understand that it takes time for grief to pass, and Rabbis don’t have any shortcuts through their grief, but we mourn just like everyone else. My mother was one who believed in doing the right thing, no matter what. I had the worst penmanship in my school when I had my celebration of becoming Bar Mitzvah, and she made me handwrite every thank-you note and taught me to write better as a result. Her cardinal rule was to always be kind to others. She never missed an opportunity to thank the people around her for all the many kindnesses they performed on her behalf. There were the dozens of people who cared for her, the neighbors who checked in on her, and the many people who adopted her as their honorary grandmother. They all made it possible for her to live in her own home right to the end. There is so much of my mother that I carry with me every day that I can’t even thank her for all she did to make me who I am. It is your support for me during this time of loss that is really your way of thanking her for all she did so I can be here for you. There is just no possible way that I can write to each one of the more than 300 people who were there for me when I needed you. All I can do is to write this thank you and to let you know that I will spend the rest of my life working on letting you know through all that I do, how much I appreciate the many kindnesses that you have done for me. You have honored me, and through me, you have honored my mother. May God bless all of you for your many acts of kindness. God knows that I will never forget it. I thank you all. Notes from the Cantor A famous Talmudic story tells of Honi, a Jewish scholar of the late Second Temple period. Honi was walking down the road one day and encountered an old man digging in the ground. "Why are you digging?" Honi asked the old man. "I'm planting a carob tree," the old man replied. "A carob tree!" said Honi. "But those take seventy years to bear fruit! Do you really think you will be alive to see the results of all your work?" "Probably not," said the old man. "But I found carob trees in the world when I entered it. Just as my ancestors planted those trees for me, I plant this tree for my children." The old man in this story recognizes something very important: that his actions affect not only himself, but also future generations in years to come. This is of course true of all of us. As we move through in the world, we change it through our actions, and the effects of some of those changes may not become apparent for decades or even centuries. One of the most pressing examples in today's world is that of climate change. We have inherited a world that is warming rapidly, and unless we take decisive action to stop it, the effects on our children and grandchildren will be far more severe than the effects on us. The good news is that positive change can also have effects beyond our own lifetimes. For example, we are still far from having solved the problems of racism, sexism, and discrimination of all kinds – but we are closer than we were fifty years ago, and certainly closer than we were two hundred years ago. The seeds that we plant today can bring us even closer to a truly just world, even if it takes decades for our trees to bear fruit. So I will end by asking a question. What seeds are we planting for our children through our actions today? And what actions can we take now that will give our children fruit to enjoy for years to come? Cantor Sarah Bolts

Words from the President Please feel free to contact me directly at philipmargolis@icloud.com or at 860-657-9951. A few months ago, I discussed the income side of our budget. Here is some insight into the expense side. First, some context. I am writing this after a Finance Committee meeting focused on the 2019 budget. In addition to discussing our anticipated revenue, we had serious discussion about our expenses to determine how we can create a balanced budget. As a reminder, the Finance Committee monitors our financial situation, works with our bookkeeper to ensure that our books are in order, provides information to the board, formulates a budget, and makes recommendations on other financial matters. One member of the committee asked a good question: “Where is the money jar?” Put another way, where is the cushion in our budget numbers? The answer is, there is none. Our budgets run lean. In 2018, we had a total budget of about $525,000. Here are some specifics: At about 40% of the budget, our biggest item is the religious category. This include the Rabbi’s and (a good chunk of) the Cantor’s salaries and other expenses such as High Holiday costs. The next largest category is our administrative expenses at a bit under 25%. This includes salaries for our office manager and part-time bookkeeper and marketing coordinator (who works on the bulletin, calendar, social media and programming support). In addition to those items, the staff manages our records and dues, building scheduling, member database, website and other technology needs, coordination of maintenance issues, and much more. This number also includes postage, office supplies and more. It is important to note that we don’t pay for everything. Volunteers provide a great deal of support for work that otherwise might represent costs. For examples, volunteers provide mailing support, organize the kitchen, support our set-up for activities and keep our flower beds looking beautiful. Programming remains largely a shared function between clergy and volunteers. Continued on page 9

RLWRS Update from Cantor Bolts We had a great time celebrating Hanukkah together at RLWRS! Our students, parents, and teachers gathered together with members of the congregation to light the shul menorah and sing Hanukkah songs together. We also had a family Hanukkah program where we learned about the mitzvah of publicizing the miracle; ate latkes and sufganiyot; and made a Hanukkah "stained glass" art project. Also this month, our kindergarten and 1st grade class learned about some of the rituals we do on Shabbat, including candle-lighting, kiddush, saying the blessing over the challah, and havdalah. They also learned the story of Hanukkah and made their own painted handprint menorahs. 3rd and 5th grades finished their study of the book of Leviticus and started looking at the book of Numbers. They also discussed some of the prayers from the morning service, and started thinking about parts of the service that they would like to learn to lead. We are looking forward to having them help lead our RLWRS morning service later this year! 6th and 7th grades successfully put on a puppet show about the Book of Jonah for the kindergarten and 1st grade class. They also studied some of the laws governing interpersonal relationships in the book of Leviticus, as well as the laws of kashrut and the many ways that these laws are practiced today. In addition, they learned about the psalms of Kabbalat Shabbat and wrote reflections about one of the psalms to share with their classmates. Don't forget to sign up for our next Family Shabbat Dinner on Friday, February 8! We had a great time at the November dinner and are looking forward to having you join us in February.

Sisterhood Speaks, cont. Hadassah/Sisterhood Book Group Thanks to all who came out on that very rainy night for what proved to be an interesting discussion of Invisible City.

Come Walk With Us, Again and Again!

The group decided that our next read will be Promised Land by Martin Fletcher. We will meet at 7:30 on February 11 in BSBI's Silverstein Center. Because PROMISED LAND is a new book the library is not able to reserve multiple copies for us at this time. However, books are available in Manchester and surrounding towns’ libraries for individuals to hold/borrow. It is also available on Kindle.

Join us for some fresh air and some invigorating exercise together. Meet us in the BSBI parking lot on Sunday, January 27, at 9:30 am and we’ll decide where to go, we will be back about 11:00 am. Ann Labb and Margie Partney, Co-Chairs

'Promised Land is the sweeping saga of two brothers and the woman they love, a devastating love triangle set against the tumultuous founding of Israel. The story begins when fourteen-year-old Peter is sent west to America to escape the growing horror of Nazi Germany. But his younger brother Arie and their entire family are sent east to the death camps. Only Arie survives. The brothers reunite in the nascent Jewish state, where Arie becomes a businessman and one of the richest men in Israel while Peter becomes a top Mossad agent heading some of Israel’s most vital espionage operations. One brother builds Israel, the other protects it. But they also fall in love with the same woman, Tamara, a lonely Jewish refugee from Cairo. And over the next two decades, as their new homeland faces extraordinary obstacles that could destroy it, the brothers’ intrigues and jealousies threaten to tear their new lives apart. Promised Land is at once the gripping tale of a struggling family and an epic about a struggling nation.’ Scheduled meetings (all at BSBI, 7:30PM): Monday, February 11, Promised Land Monday, April 8 Monday, June 17

BSBI Community

“Thank you from the volunteers, staff and clients at HVCC. Your commitment to our mission is beyond words. We truly appreciate the support. Thank you for your donation of $250 in response to the end of the year Annual Appeal. Without your commitment and support for the agency, this would not be possible! We at HVCC can’t thank you enough for everything you do to help keep our mission going!” The HVCC Food Pantry is an emergency food source for residents of Vernon, Tolland, and Ellington. The food is free to individuals who meet income and residency requirements. HVCC Basic Needs program provides assistance to individuals and families in a manner which promotes independence while ensuring basic needs are met in a dignified manner, regardless of ability to pay, to prevent hunger and homelessness. No donation is too small, and all donations are greatly appreciated! Words from the President Continued Maintaining our property costs about $55,000. A fair portion of this piece includes the cost of our custodian, who performs building maintenance and other services. While some other maintenance costs are predictable (e.g., lawn care), some are not. In 2018, we will spend nearly $15,000 on HVAC maintenance! Similarly, there are some winters when Mother Nature is kind, making snow removal less costly, and others when we need to spend more. We also will spend about $35,000 for utilities in 2018. Insurance, which has been “shopped around” every few years, runs about $18,000. Our dues to USCJ (i.e., the Conservative Movement), which helps us with Rabbi/Cantor searches, training and supports the movement at a whole, run $14,000. I left one large item for last, our religious school, which ran around $50,000 in 2018. This includes the other part of the Cantor’s salaries and cost for the instructors. Our congregation has continued to reaffirm that we value Jewish education through our commitment to educate our youth. Our number of students is small, ranging from the teens to mid-twenties in recent years. While the cost of running the school has declined over the years, the cost per pupil has grown. We largely run the school with a similar structure as we did when we had far more students. Even if we experience modest growth in the coming years, the model is not sustainable. This is why we’re beginning to discuss alternative approaches to providing quality Jewish education. I will update you when there is meaningful progress to share. We are not alone in the need to look at the structure that ultimately makes up our costs. Congregations around the country are reviewing and modifying structures to reflect their current realities. To be responsible, we must do the same. As I mentioned in a previous column, we’re fortunate that our “current realities” include an endowment, a culture of giving from a generous membership base, and a commitment to financial sustainability. Want to learn more about how we operate? Want to have more of a say about how we spend our money? Let me know. We could always use more help.

Phil Margolis, President 9

Rabbi Richard Plavin Library Corner David Alter, Librarian The library has purchased subscriptions to the Jerusalem Post, Haaretz newspapers, and The Forward. The Jerusalem Post is a weekly print edition while Haaretz and The Forward are digital subscriptions which can be accessed 24/7 from your home computer. The login information for is as follows: Haaretz Email: library@myshul.org Password: bsbilibrary The Forward: Email: library@myshul.org Password: BSBIlibrary1 I want to thank the Eveleen and Elliot Zimmerman Library Fund for funding the purchase of these subscriptions. The Jerusalem Post is a newspaper based in Jerusalem, founded in 1932 during the British Mandate of Palestine. Formerly regarded as left-wing, the paper underwent a noticeable shift to the right in the late 1980s. From 2004 the paper took a more centrist position, competing against the staunchly left-liberal Haaretz. Its former editor, Steve Linde, aimed to provide balanced coverage of the news along with views from across the political spectrum.

Haaretz was founded in 1918, making it the longest running newspaper currently in print in Israel. It is known for its leftwing and liberal stances on domestic and foreign issues According to the Center for Research Libraries, among Israel's daily newspapers, "Haaretz is considered the most influential and respected for both its news coverage and its commentary."

Haaretz was first published in 1918 as a newspaper sponsored by the British military government in Palestine. In 1919, it was taken over by a group of socialist-oriented Zionists, mainly from Russia. The newspaper was established on 18 June 1919 by a group of businessmen including the philanthropist Isaac Leib Goldberg, and initially, it was called Hadashot Ha'aretz ("News of the Land"). Later, the name was shortened to Haaretz. (This paragraph and the prior one contradict each other. Which is right)

The Forward (Yiddish: ‫ֿפאָ רווערטס‬, Forverts), formerly known as The Jewish Daily Forward, provides online access to 24/7 breaking news and coverage that matters to American Jews. Founded in 1897 as a Yiddish-language daily, in the 21st century The Forward is a digital-first publication with online reporting; in addition monthly magazines are published in both English and Yiddish. The Forward's perspective on world and national news and its reporting on the Jewish perspective on modern United States have made it one of the most influential American Jewish publications. The Forward is published by an independent notfor-profit association. It has a politically progressive editorial focus.

Jazz Festival Update To the Synagogue Community: On behalf of the BSBI Jazz Festival Committee, I wish to thank the Temple community for its support of the 3rd Annual BSBI Jazz Festival. The festival was a tremendous success in every respect! The musicians played to an almost sellout crowd and demonstrated its appreciation for the terrific performances by enthusiastic applause and standing ovations throughout the festival! I wish to thank the following who served on the fund raising committee and to those who helped over the weekend at the festival for all their hard work: Sandi Phair, Jeff & Liza Mandel, Ron & Brina Abrahams, Mike and Maddy Turk, Jack & Dawn Steigelfest, Phil and Sue Margolis, Ed & Ellen Kloehn, Arnold and Diane Keyser, Sally Ivaldi, Cruz Mandell, Ilene O’Neil and Debbie Cinquemani, Alan Zitomer, Ellen Frankel, Gordon and Bea Brodie, Russ Benblatt, Sissy Seader, Steve Wollins and Ross Novgrad. I also want to thank Alex Nakhimovsky, Festival Artistic Director, for his expertise as a musician and coordination of performers who were present at the BSBI Jazz Festival this year. Also to Harold Bernstein for capturing the essence of the festival in photos. We are now in the process of planning for our 4th Annual Festival to be held on December 7th at Cheney Hall. Based on our success over the past 3 years we anticipate that next year’s event will be even more exciting. We are already working on assembling a fabulous group of great jazz performers, in addition to a variety of other genres, for your listening pleasure. On behalf of the fund raising committee, I hope that we can continue count on the Temple community’s support in bringing high quality, live music to Manchester.

Similar to the Machzor Lev Shalem we use on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, Siddur Lev Shalem includes informational side notes and extra readings on each page to help everyone get more out of Shabbat tephillot (prayer). We are now offering opportunities to dedicate these siddurim in honor of people or events in our lives or in memory of loved ones. A siddur can be dedicated for just $50 a book. If you would like to see a copy of the new siddur, they are available for inspection at the synagogue.

BSBI has been given the opportunity to accept donations of vehicles through a partnership with Vehicles For Charity to process donated vehicles. Consider donating your unwanted vehicle in support of BSBI. It is easier and faster than selling it on your own, and you may qualify for a tax deduction! Donors say it is a satisfying way to make a larger donation than they normally could. Other vehicles accepted by this program include: unwanted car, truck, boat, motorcycle, RV or recreational vehicles. For more information go to: https://www.vehiclesforcharity.org Beth Olam Cemetery

Leave a Jewish Legacy

The BSBI Endowment Board of Trustees has periodically published Bulletin articles about Legacy Giving and our collective obligations to sustain, nurture and grow current programs and institutions for ourselves and for future generations. As we move from 2018 to 2019 in the secular calendar, the BSBI Endowment Board of Trustees would like to thank our prior, present and potential donors and supporters. Prior Bulletin articles have discussed our collaboration with the Jewish Community Foundation. This collaboration allows us to offer charitable annuities and charitable remainder trusts as other options for our donors. The Jewish Community Foundation can also provide continuity of philanthropy to support Jewish causes in the future. Our working relationship with the Jewish Community Foundation had never been better and will continue to strengthen as we moved forward together. The New Year is an opportune time to review some of the ways you can give to the BSBI Endowment. It is also a good time to be certain that your Will reflects your wishes and values with regards to the disposition of your assets at the time of death. A bequest to the BSBI Endowment can be made in your Will either as a specific dollar amount or as a percentage of assets. The BSBI Endowment may be the beneficiary of an existing paid up life insurance policy. Alternatively, a new life insurance policy can be purchased with the BSBI Endowment named as the beneficiary. Under certain circumstances the premiums for such a policy may be deductible to the extent provided by law. Loved ones can be memorialized with gifts to the Endowment. In the past we have reviewed the use of QCDs [Qualified Charitable Distributions] from IRAs, Keogh, 403B or 401K plans if the owner of the assets is over 701/2 years of age. It is also possible to leave IRA assets to the Endowment at the time of death regardless of age. The residual of an estate can also be bequeathed to the Endowment. During the last calendar year the BSBI Endowment had provided periodic educational opportunities about charitable giving and how you can help us sustain the institutions and programs that have helped enrich Jewish life east of the river. The tax regulations are complex and in constant flux. If you are considering leaving a legacy or retirement assets to the Endowment Foundation of BSBI please reach out to Jeff Wasser [jeffreywasser@sbcglobal.net] or Roy Filkoff [royfilkoff@altmanandco.com] or BSBIEndowment@myshul.org. Sincerely, Jeff Wasser, MD President of the BSBI Endowment 14

Sisterhood Film Night Saturday, February 9 7:00 PM Free Event-Suggested Donation The 8 men of an Egyptian band arrive in Israel having been booked to play at an Arab Cultural Center only to find out they have arrived in the wrong town in the middle of the Negev Desert with no transportation out until the following day. Watch as they are taken in by the Israeli townspeople, form bonds, and share a sense of unspoken longing and loneliness.

“The Band’s Visit” has not provided any of the narrative payoffs we might have expected, but has provided something more valuable: An interlude involving two “enemies,” Arabs and Israelis, that shows them both as only ordinary people with ordinary hopes, lives and disappointments. It has also shown us two souls with rare beauty.
