Brocklebank Craft Brewery

OATIS is an oat pale ale brewed in honor of Brocklebank’s brew dog Otis. Like its namesake, this beer has a lovely tan color

and is a little sweet and a little bitter. Available in their taproom now.

Citizen Cider

bROSÉ – ROSÉ STYLE CIDER A cider rosé made by three bros right here in the great state of Vermont, sold in 12 oz. cans, (6.1% ABV) is the second cider ever made at Citizen Cider. This is co-fermented with fresh pressed cider and blueberries at their Flynn Avenue Press House in Burlington. They claim bRosé is the embodiment of cooperation, blueberry and apple, summer and fall, farmers and cider makers ... cheers!

Citizen Cider

BIG JUICY IMPERIAL DRY CIDER Make a cider that’s juicy they said! A conundrum of sorts, Vermont made apple molasses was produced from fresh apple cider in a local sugarhouse, blended with the sweet cider and fermented to be completely dry. (8% ABV)

Woodchuck Cider

Woodchuck Hard Cider is launching a new collection of

ciders that uses 100% Vermont Apples called the 802 Collection. All varieties in this collection will be traditional ciders made with only fresh pressed Vermont juice from their orchard partners thus the name 802 to pay homage to Vermont.

n a state where most breweries feature a hop-heavy IPA, it can be refreshing to find a completely different flavor. And completely different is what House of Fermentol-

It was during their research for this third edition that they found themselves in Oregon, where they visited several brewers making sour beers. The idea clicked, and they decided to give it a go themselves.

People will remember a specific dot, and when it comes up again, they will remember the flavor, and I think they’re going to be tolerant of small variations. We’re giving customers a variety of beers, each of

SPOTLIGHT ON CRAFT SELLERS

What's most unique about the craft beer, wine and cider industry in Vermont are the stores that carry the products. Tap rooms, events and tastings are just some of the places to find what you like, but there are also these treasures that have it all.

SPOTLIGHT ON CRAFT SELLERS

STOWE PUBLIC HOUSE Stowe Public House & Bottle Shop was built in the 1800s which gives the space a lot of personality. With over 700 different craft beers from Vermont and around the world, they take pride in educating and sharing the delicious brews. They also offer cheese plates with local meats and cheeses. Here’s what Stowe Public House manager Tori Lockhart has to say. THOUGHTS ON THE CRAFT SCENE: Vermont is coming to be known as the Napa Valley of craft beer, and I agree with that. With over 70 breweries in the state, each and every one brews a unique and delicious beer. As more breweries and cideries are popping up, the more people are being educated on different styles of beer helping them expand their palette. BIGGEST SELLERS: Vermont IPAs! Most people are looking for that good hoppy, hazy, New England style IPA that many local breweries create so well. A popular cider is Stowe Cider. They make semi dry and refreshing cider that I like to describe as apple-y champagne!

28

BREWVIEW Vermont 2019 Issue 1

Boyden Valley Winery is the closest winery to us and they make some of the more unique wines you won’t find anywhere else, such as their tart Rhubarb wine which is very popular in the summer, or their Glogg wine that will warm you up in the winter. OUT OF STATE CUSTOMERS: Out of state customers always come in for the staples they know ... Alchemist, Lawsons, Upper Pass, and Von Trapps, but then leave with a bunch of other beers from our amazing nano breweries, since we have such a large selection and also the option to buy single beers! RECOMMENDATION FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO TRY VERMONT CRAFT BEER, WINE OR CIDER: There are so many different beers, wines and ciders in Vermont. I recommend starting with a lager or pilsner, and working your way up to the hoppiness of an IPA or the dark, rich flavor of a porter or stout. Any cider from Vermont is great! Vermont ciders tend to be more on the dry side, as most do not add any sugars or additives, keeping them dry and crisp. All Vermont wines are going to be more on the sweeter side, as we are limited to what grapes we can grow in our climate. I enjoy and would suggest starting with a glass of a semi dry white wine, such as Fresh Tracks Backcountry Blanc, which is not too sweet but not too dry. BREWVIEW Vermont 2019 Issue 1

Making a Woodzie is a time-intensive process since every single one is handmade out of solid wood in one continuous piece. Jeffrey sticks to local wood—maple ash and birch. It takes about a half an hour to make one, although it can vary. Each one requires a methodical approach and a careful attention to detail. The wood is turned by hand and customized with a logo or design if desired. From that first showing at the New Year’s Eve party the word spread and demand grew. He produced an initial batch of one hundred Woodzies, and kept receiving requests for various types of logos and engravings. Jeffrey said he’d make any engraving a potential customer might ask for, which has led to some

interesting artwork. He has engraved pictures of people’s cars, logos for various bands, and even pictures of people’s extended families. At this point, Jeffrey estimates that he’s produced more than five hundred individual different types of engravings. The Woodzie has proved to be extremely popular with bands and musicians. Jeffrey shared some surprising stories about demand for the Woodzies personalized for famous bands—not just bands on the local circuit in Vermont. In the three years since he’s began making them, his Woodzies have attracted the attention of notable musicians like Wilco, the late Greg Allman, Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top, and even Jimmy Buffet. They have been selling personalized Woodzies as touring merchandise and also have made them available online. To date the creation of the Woodzies has been a oneman operation, but Jeffrey has big plans for expansion in the future. He and his wife plan to do some travelling this winter to start thinking about how to best continue their work to bring personalized Woodzies to people who want them. In short, the Woodzie caught on and went from novelty at a party with friends to a legitimate business endeavor in a very short time. Jeffrey hasn’t stopped woodworking, either—although he spends 70 percent of his time making Woodzies, he still does cabinetry and carpentry. Interested in purchasing a Woodzie? AN OVERVIEW OF JAZZ PIANO FROM RAGTIME TO HIP HOP Manchester Community Library Green Mountain Academy welcomes Eugene Uman, the director of the Vermont Jazz Center, to talk about the history of jazz piano. This presentation will observe the development of the piano throughout jazz history. Beginning with ragtime and blues music, they will explore how features from those styles were incorporated by Jelly Roll Morton into New Orleans and traditional jazz. They will listen to the kings of stride, observe the influences of boogie-woogie, and delight in the piano’s role in bebop, hard-bop and cool jazz. This talk will conclude with a look at pioneers of modern jazz piano, and players making the scene today. Registration is $15 in advance or $20 at the door. For more information or to register, please call 802-867-0111 or visit www.greenmtnacademy.org.
