Enjoy The Summer!

Nothing is better than enjoying the sunset over your favorite mountain while savoring your craft beverage of choice. We have personally enjoyed this summer ritual for many years now. In the issue, we run down quite a few places you can hang outside and enjoy a beverage—from Marlboro to the Northeast Kingdom.

And summer is the season of burgers and sandwiches, so we put the challenge out to see what tasty creations exist. Crafters in the state didn’t disappoint! Check out “Zen and the art of sandwiches and burgers.” We guarantee you’ll be jonesing for a good burger after reading!

Dirt Church Brewing is spotlighted in this issue. This great little place offers an incredible view of Burke and a terrific lineup of beers. We run down new releases, biz buzz, and as always, tasting rooms, and “The Map” in the back.

Cheers!

Enjoy the summer!

LAWSON FINEST LIQUIDS KINGDOM TRAILS IPA

A summertime favorite, the Kingdom Trails IPA is back! Every summer, we partner with Kingdom Trails to bring back this fan-favorite beer. Crisp and zippy with a mild bitterness and overflowing with fruity floral notes, this 6.2% IPA hits the mark every time. With amazing teamwork, we worked with Kingdom Trails to package, run the canning line, fill up kegs, and load up the trucks.

NATIVE LAND

The Native Land National Beer Collaboration is crafted by the creative minds of Bow & Arrow Brewing Co. Their mission in this project is to support Native American communities and native lands across the country. For every brewery’s Native Land beer, profits are donated to a Native American nonprofit of their choice. Proceeds from Lawson’s Finest, Native Land will be donated to the Vermont Indigenous Heritage Center who aim to learn and teach Vermont Abenaki culture and heritage.

Lawson’s Finest would like to acknowledge that we sit on the ancestral lands of the Missisquoi Abenaki Tribe. Archaeological studies indicate that the Mad River Valley acted as a thruway for hunters and fisherman, and we honor the Abenaki people, both past and present, for being stewards of this land.

This year’s Native Land recipe is a Mexican-style lager, and we have brewed it with flaked maize, Saaz hops, and Magnum hops from our friends at Champlain Valley Hops. At 4.7%, this is one crushable good brew for a cause! Now available in cans and pouring on our Lukr faucet at the taproom.

WHETSTONE BEER CO.

Tim’s Awesome Burger has been a staple at Whetstone since the doors opened in 2012. Tim’s Awesome Burger tops Whetstone's signature beef blend patty with smooth peanut butter, maple glazed bacon, and tangy red onions. The combination might surprise you, but the mix of savory and a touch of sweet and tangy balance each other. The non-traditional pairing was discovered after a late night of sampling some beers by co-founder Tim Brady. When he asked his new chef to put it on the menu, the chef balked and said that he didn’t want his name on such a thing, and so he called it the “Tim Burger.” When Tim saw that on the menu, he revised the name to Tim’s Awesome Burger as a joke with the chef. Over 10 years later, Whetstone has made over 20,000 Tim’s Awesome Burgers, and it continues to be one of their most popular items. Tim’s Awesome Burger pairs incredibly well with Whetstone Rug Life Amber Ale or I’m Down Brown Ale. www.whetstonebeerco.com

Wine Tastings at Maquam Barn and Winery with Stunning Views

Nestled in the rolling hills of Vermont, Maquam Barn and Winery boasts the most pristine views and sunsets the state has to offer. Founded in 2016 by John Brooks, a third-generation farmer, the Brooks family continues creating delicious wines together. With multiple acres of land along the shores of Lake Champlain, they produce award-winning, limited-production grape and fruit wines that will satisfy anyone’s taste.

GATHER AROUND

A perfect location to enjoy yourself with family and friends, this family-owned winery aims to bring people together. “We tell anyone who has not yet visited Maquam that the pictures do not do justice to the experience. You will have a one-of-a-kind experience at Maquam. You will take in every aspect of the property, from an operating vineyard, surrounding farmland, and sweeping views of the Adirondack Mountains, all while enjoying a glass of wine from the fire pits on our expansive, covered patio,” shared Shaun Brooks, owner of the winery. The winery is open for the

season, ready to entertain for special occasions or offer a casual tasting with friends.

The tasting room is open every Sunday from 1 to 5pm and Thursday from 4:30 to 9pm, with music on Sundays from 2:30 to 4:30pm and Thursday from 6 to 8pm. Along with your wine (or beer), music, and breathtaking scenery, you can

enjoy charcuterie boards with local ingredients and occasionally food vendors from the community.“We are excited to continue expanding our vineyard to offer our customers something unique and exciting,” Shaun said.

WINES FOR EVERY TASTE

The fruit trees, bushes, and grapes benefit from the proximity to Lake Champlain’s nearby shoreline, resulting in an extended fruit growing season. The still waters of St. Albans Bay and the temperate climate allow black currants plenty of time to ripen, resulting in deep color and amplified

complexity of flavor in Maquam’s wines.

With the opening of the new winery in Milton, Vermont, the winery has planted acres of grapes annually and looks forward to introducing those grape wines into their portfolio. Chief Winemaker and Sommelier Dominic Rivard, with 20-plus years of experience in traditional winemaking techniques, employs extended barrel aging to bring out the best in Maquam’s wines.

With taste being first and foremost what customers are looking for in a good wine—and the focus of Maquam’s winemaking process—

32 BREWVIEW Vermont 2023 Issue 2

balance is the second most important. Maquam’s wines are well-balanced, offering a smooth and enjoyable drinking experience for all palates. They are confident you will find a wine that’s perfect for your visit.

PASSIONATE WINEMAKING

Maquam Barn and Winery stands as a testament to the Brooks family’s passion for winemaking in the heart of Vermont’s picturesque landscapes. The scenic beauty of the vineyard, the surrounding farmland, and the panoramic vistas of the Adirondack Mountains create an unparalleled setting to enjoy a glass of their award-winning wines no matter the occasion. Whether you are visiting for a tasting or celebrating a wedding, Maquam Barn and Winery welcomes you to join them in the heart of Vermont’s wine country. U

TAKE ME TO DIRT CHURCH

Dirt Church Brewing Company is an outdoor lovers haven

Dirt Church is a term of endearment often associated with the outdoor activities people participate in on Sunday mornings, like hiking, gardening, or bike riding. One of these “dirt churches” brought together brewery owners Anna Cronin and Bruce Lindsay and gave inspiration to their East Haven venture, Dirt Church Brewing Company.

GOING TO THE CHAPEL

Anna, a former professional athlete and strength coach, and Bruce, an arborist and horticulturist, met years ago while mountain biking in Circumburke, a difficult and grueling 26-mile

bike race around Burke Mountain. After striking up a conversation, the two became fast friends before falling in love and starting a long distance relationship.

When COVID struck in 2020, so much uncertainty hit their lives. It gave the couple the time to grow closer while quarantining and riding bikes, but both of their careers were now up in the air.

But with this uncertainty came a level of freedom. They were now given the chance to do anything they wanted. As Anna shared, “We were given the chance to live our most joyful and authentic life, which began with the purchase of

www.BrewViewVT.com 43 DIRT CHURCH BREWING COMPANY 1171 VT-114 East Haven, VT (802) 745-9252 www.dirtchurchvt.com

the historic 1876 East Haven Chapel.” This building, spotted by Bruce years prior, was an icon in the community. Having hosted New Englanders for over a century for celebrations and gatherings, the duo dreamed of renovating the chapel to preserve its rich history. “We simply hoped to expand on this heritage with new and innovative ideas,” Anna said.

And so Dirt Church Brewing Company began. With the newly renovated chapel, Anna and Bruce added the taproom and Party Barn, which offered plenty of space for weddings, events, and social gatherings for everyone—dogs included. “We sought to create a space for all who enjoy outdoor recreation and a reverence for the land to celebrate life and enjoy a craft beer to savor it all,” Anna said.

BUILDING ON THEIR BREWS

Bruce, while a former tree warden by trade, was an avid home brewer and spent some time working at New England Brewing Co. in Woodbridge, Connecticut. There, he gained his commercial brewing experience and grew his love of craft beers, which shows in the brewery’s vast array of offerings.

Recently, the brewery added Owen Hartman to their team as the new head brewer.

Owen comes with a craft beer background from his experience at Livingood’s Restaurant & Brewery in New York and Fiddlehead Brewing Company in Shelburne, Vermont. His dedication and passion for making fantastic craft beer is evident in everything the brewery produces.

Currently on the menu in the taproom, one can find amazing beers such as their Church Key Lager, Queen of Essex New England IPA, and the Full Vermonty Hefeweizen, among many others. They plan on releasing a number of new offerings soon, including a Rye IPA, an Altbier, and an Oktoberfest Marzen.

ALWAYS STAYING ACTIVE

To go along with the beer, Dirt Church holds an annual Oktoberfest complete with traditional music, German cuisine, stein-holding competition, keg toss, costumes, and of course, plenty of beer. This year’s event is slated to be held on Saturday, Sept. 30.

In addition to Oktoberfest, the brewery hosts group bike rides throughout the summer and has live music almost every weekend. You will find the most up-to-date information for their events on their social media pages @dirtchurchvt. So grab your friends, family, and pups, and take a ride to church—Dirt Church that is.

LAMOILLE VALLEY BIKE TOURS

OFFER A FUN, AUTHENTIC VERMONT EXPERIENCE

What better way to experience the beauty of Vermont than on a carfree bike trail that follows a scenic river and passes through several towns? That’s the idea Jim and Yva Rose had in mind when they started Lamoille Valley Bike Tours.

“We saw this as an opportunity to start a business on what will be the longest recreational rail trail in New England—the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail,”

said Jim. “By renting e-bikes, we can get more people out on the trail and they can bike farther, travel faster, and see more in less time. They’ll also arrive less sweaty, as e-bikes provide a pedal assist up to 20 miles per hour.”

the trail, the business is focused on the 17-mile trail between Cambridge and Morrisville, and the 93 miles from the Connecticut River to Lake Champlain. Recently, the business launched a full trail, 14-passenger shuttle service for people, bikes, and luggage for those who want to travel the trail by bike and need transportation back to their vehicles. The shuttle service provides bike and e-bike rentals to guests who want full- or half-trail travel but can't bring their own bike. “There’s so much to do when people visit Vermont, and e-bikes provide an adventure with

PEDAL PADDLE TOUR Combines a canoe or kayak excursion on the Lamoille River with local business, VT Canoe and Kayak, and a scenic e-bike trail ride. This is a great way to enjoy two distinct experiences in one day.

VERMONTBIKE&BREWTOUR The most popular guided e-bike tour includes stops at three local craft breweries so bikers can see and sip the best of Lamoille County. Includes a free appetizer and two souvenir pint glasses.

FALLFOLIAGETOUR Experience Vermont’s spectacular fall foliage in an unforgettable new way—from the seat of an e-bike. This self-guided adventure includes breathtaking fall colors at no extra charge.

an activity level that fits them,” added Jim. “People can do all the pedaling or they can use the electric motor for a pedal assist, so people with different biking abilities can enjoy the trail. We also have traditional pedal bikes.”

Jim and Yva have formed networks with many local businesses that can be visited and experienced by e-bikes. They provide their customers with a ride guide containing information on local places of interest, so that in addition to biking, they can shop, eat, swim, or have a beer at a local craft brewery. “E-bikes provide a unique experience into Vermont and a way to experience outdoor Vermont more intimately than in a car,” added Jim. “This is a more sustainable form of tourism. I love seeing people return after their ride with an e-bike smile and come back as happy customers.” U

TEMPLE DURBAN

Grower: First Chair

Strain: Temple Durban

Grownindoors

Genetics: Temple Kush x Durban

Poison

Harvestdate: 9.26.23

Packagedate: 2.4.23

This tight and dense, straight up classic weed smelling profile flower brought us back to our old school Canadian weed glory days of the 90s, listening to Cypress Hill or Phish at Nectar's, Vermont.

This frosty looking flower was tightly trimmed, with a few stigmas poking out and some sugar leaves left on typical to a machine trim.

We were able to get a glimpse of amber trichomes, telling us that the cultivator let this lady go the final

stretch when growing.

As we started to digest the aromas, we dug our noses deep into an almost dried tea smell, an earthy and herbal grounding essence.

The classic Durban earthy spice popped when we continued breaking it up with our hands, with the spice of the beta caryophyllene terpene lingering on our fingers.

The Temple Durban’s layers left distinct notes of myrcene, limonene, and that spicy beta caryophyllene—a great combination of spice, sage, and earthiness, with a slight citrus and sweet kick to boot.

As we ground up the flower, the sweet and spicy aromas took a quiet front stage, getting us pumped to try this “sweet sugar and spice, and everything nice.”

For 8-month-old cannabis, this flower still had a good squish and feel to the touch, a testament to great packaging and jar choice. It ground well and rolled great.

As we inhaled that first dry hit, aka inhalation prior to lighting, we got sweet, lemony, and earthy, a bit noisier this time, leaving us hoping that the smoke continued to get even better.

Smoking this joint was a good reminder to go beyond those first few hits when you are looking for the flavors. As we puffed our way into the second half, we found the earthy and mildly sweet notes we had smelled, a touch of sweet on the lips, earth on tongue, and spice in throat and nose.

Temple Durban left us creative, chatty, and giggly with a mellow head high and body buzz. Collectively feeling uplifted and lighter from the dominant terpene limonene at 0.723%, it reminded us all of an antidepressant rather than the typical Durban poison stimulant. With 18.14% THC, cotton mouth, and the hiccups, our euphoric banter centered around gummies, homemade pizza, breads, and cheeses.

This is what we would describe as a pleasant smoke that left us energized, wide- yet glossy-eyed, and with mild

pain relief effects that we were grateful for.

WATERMELON KUSH

Grower: Old Growth Vermont www.ogvermont.com

Strain: Watermelon Kush

Grownoutdoors

Harvestdate: Fall 2022

Packagedate: 5.1.23

Some people think outdoors isn’t “eye candy.” When you put a scope to this Watermelon Kush, eye candy is all we see. With a moderate amount of trichomes coating the flower, we noted a fair amount of amber trichome heads, and

many, if not most, trichome heads intact.

It was evident that this flower had a meticulous and careful trim job, leaving bits of sugar leaves intact to protect the trichomes while following the sexy contour of the lady.

This flower is a great example of the very pretty Vermont outdoors, especially for a 9-month-old flower. The stigmas looked mature, red, and ready to smoke!

The jar popping aroma was potent for 9-month-old outdoor with complex layers, like a triple chocolate cake.

We were immediately able to identify dominant terpenes of terpinolene and

limonene, with the sweet ocimene popping in the background (0.63% terpinolene, 0.26% limonene, 0.23% ocimene, with 19% THC).

The sweet popped even more on the grind and smelled like tangy watermelon much more than it did on the initial whiff. This flower definitely had some tang with a bang, almost like a fermented watermelon. The perfect squish upon touch let us know this cultivator took their time curing this flower to perfection. Fluffy on the grind and sticky on the roll, it made for an enjoyable and easy rolling experience.

Upon smoke, the intensity was moderate to potent with a complexity that was mostly tangy and sweet, chased with a bit of pine or mint.

The mouth tingles and palate stain didn’t last too long, but the thick smoke was apparent and notable.

We thought this was one best to share and cough with a friend.

“I always like the Watermelon Kush, it is uplifting for me.”

CARAMEL COLLIDER

Grower: Smoke Ranch Redemption

Strain: Caramel Collider

Grownoutdoors

Packagedate:  2.5.23

These delightful little nuggets were tight and light!

With a dense overall structure, and tight trim job, we found patches of clear intact trichomes with dark orange stigmas closely shaping the nugget.

We all noticed a moderately intense earth smell right off the bat, with a touch of sweet, leaving some intrigue to the imagination—almost a tease!

Upon grind, the aromas were subtle, adding some pleasant piney and citrus notes to the nose, with the earthy and sweet shining through even more.

A bit dry after the grind, leaving us with an imagination toward the

www.BrewViewVT.com 57

exciting untapped potential this must have had at its prime, yet noted how this could be perfect for the vaping consumer.

With our freshly rolled joints in hand, the initial inhalation prior to lighting left a mellow earthiness on our palates, with a slightly pine, slightly sweet combination.

As we lit up, the pine initially shone through, and as we chewed on the smoke, we found earth again. You could almost taste the southwest Vermont soil, full of organic green veggies with a touch of corn and earth blowing in the wind, continuing with sweetness coming through when smoking. The flavor and smoke was light bodied, not the teeth-licking sweetness you find with some smokes.

This simple, classic earth and sweet would be a fabulous choice for a newer consumer and someone looking for a mellow experience, reminiscent of that first “sativa” head high or a low dose edible buzz. It “doesn’t pack too bad of a punch” and is “not intimidating or overwhelming,” even with THC topping 21.1% on lab tests.

Caramel Collider left us focused with entertaining conversation, a “ready for

my day” kind of vibe, rather than a night munching on the couch vibe.
