PETS AND PEOPLE SPONSORED BY BEVS

Pet winter is coming! Winter is coming… as is popularly said these days. And while 90 percent of dogs really do love the snow, the process of people managing snow and ice in driveways and on sidewalks can be really harmful to them. Commercial salts and ice melts, especially those that specialize in sub-zero ice thawing, contain very harmful chemicals that are not safe for pet feet, or their mouths and stomachs if ingested. Tiny granules of salt and ice melt stick to paws and often irritate the pads of their feet—if their feet are already cracked from the dry winter air, that hurts pets even more! Salt and ice melt that sticks to their paws is then licked off, causing mouth sores and stomach issues when digested. Gagging, coughing, vomiting, visible discomfort, and seizures (in extreme cases) are symptoms of ingestion. SO HOW DO YOU PREVENT THIS? THERE ARE FOUR WAYS: Cover your dog’s paws with petroleum jelly or a pet paw wax before heading outside. Not only does paw balm protect their feet, it also moisturizes them, preventing cracking and excessive winter dryness. Pet stores and Etsy sell paw wax year round. 28 | www.bestofburlingtonvt.com

Cover your dog’s paws with dog booties. There are many sizes and styles. Your pup can be fashionable while also staying protected and warm. Wipe your pet’s paws with a warm cloth after each walk. Or dip their paws in a bowl of warm water, then dry them. This will remove any salt or stray ice melt particles. Don’t let your dog drink from puddles or lick snow that is near an area where salt or ice melt could be present. Also, only buy pet-safe ice melt, such as Paw Pal or Safe Paw brands that are pet safe. There are many brands of pet- and child-safe salt and ice melt products.

Some of my best leading men have been dogs and horses. –Elizabeth Taylor

In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this. –Terry Pratchett

Surprising dog Christmas cookie food ideas Many of us pup parents really like to go all out each holiday season and bake cookies… for our dogs. Hey, I’m guilty of this practice, at least twice a year. I love baking, and I love seeing my pup happy so it’s a win-win. But did you know there’s a sizable list of weird food items that you could be adding to spice up these recipes and add some nutrition? Let’s try to expand our pup’s horizons past only flour and peanut butter-based recipes a bit. Kale, blueberries, carrots, sweet potato, quinoa, chia seeds, and dried seaweed all have many beneficial vitamins, minerals, and anti-inflammatory properties for dogs. And yes, dried seaweed as in nori found in sushi rolls. Add yogurt and pumpkin puree to your pups diet for digestive health. The amount of healthy perks that each of these foods offers, plus the added deliciousness, cannot be overstated. So the next time you’re whipping up a fun new treat, snack, or Christmas cookie recipe, feel free to switch it up a bit.

Snow maze all day So it’s winter, and your dog wants to play in the snow too much for your liking. Here’s a clever idea: build a snow maze! Videos of pet owners’ snow mazes and their dogs having the time of their life playing in them have become a social media craze. All you have to do is shovel out pathways in the snow and build up the walls a bit to keep your pup guessing what’s next. Connect paths, make different routes, make dead ends, make twists and turns, and hide treats or toys. Whatever you want! Maybe you want to add a tunnel? Sounds awesome. And then, of course, take a video. Your pup will have fun exercising their bodies and their minds. This will keep the winter blues away for both you and your pup. After all, who doesn’t want to watch a dog happily navigate a snow maze?

rt is a great way to heal your soul and sooth your mind. It has been said that art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time. This is especially true for people going through longterm illnesses, injury, or surgery recoveries. Everyone needs a release, especially

kids That’s why rt from the eart, a Burlington City Arts program, was started. It is a volunteer program giving artistic mental escapes to patients, caregivers and hospital staff at the niversity of ermont edical enter and niversity of ermont hildren’s ospital.

TRANSFORMATIVE CARE rt from the eart began in and still continues to transform hospital rooms and chemotherapy infusion bays into temporary art studios. The program provides free art kits, as well as volunteers to spread creative cheer throughout these hospitals.

FROM CARD MAKING TO OIL PASTELS

The artwork made through Art from the eart is displayed in four different galleries around the hospital. These galleries transform the hospital into a more colorful, creative place, which makes patients, visitors, and employees feel good. Rebecca Schwarz is the Art from the Heart coordinator and loves the work this program is doing for patients, nurses, and caregivers. She is ecstatic that this

program helps people feel better through the arts. It helps to relieve anxiety and boredom. “ e offer people autonomy and creative e pression by encouraging them to find art everywhere. ou can find out how you feel through the creative process. It’s pretty exciting.” Rebecca said. “We are not an art therapy program, but art is therapeutic in that lower case ‘t’ way.”

This program does wonders for the mental health of patients. In 2023 alone, over 3,000 kids were visited by volunteers and over 3,500 art kits and gifts were made through the program. Around half of the participants are children under the age of 18. The art kits are unique, ready to use, and are kept on hand throughout the hospital to relieve hospital boredom, help patients feel cared for, redirect anxiety, and support communication. There are several types of art kits available: card making, collage, coloring, drawing and mandalas, Crayola Model Magic, oil pastels, origami, pattern doodling, watercolors, and journaling and Write to Heal. “The collage kit (developed by madcollage) is one of my favorites. It is exciting because you can really take it in so many different directions.” beamed Rebecca. “Curiosity and WINTER 2023/2024 | Best of Burlington | 41

e’ve all been there; looking at that wall and saying to yourself, “Wouldn’t it be great if that wall was gone, and we could reorganize the kitchen?” But how do you even get started? Peregrine Design/Build brings with it over 35 years of expertise in the remodeling industry. Over these years, the company has garnered valuable insights and tips to ensure a seamless remodeling process. 56 | www.bestofburlingtonvt.com

RESEARCHING AND HIRING A PROFESSIONAL REMODELING SERVICE Before diving into your kitchen remodel project, it is important to gather recommendations from friends, family, and neighbors. Ask them if they have had any positive experiences with remodeling services in your area. These personal recommendations can give you valuable insights into the quality of work and customer service provided by different contractors.

2

nother great resource to help you find a professional remodeling service is ermont uilders emodelers ssociation. They have a wealth of e perience and can provide you with recommendations for reliable contractors in your area. dditionally, keep an eye out for job signs on your daily commute. If you see a construction site that catches your eye, take note of the company’s contact information and research them. This can be a great way to discover new contractors that you may not have otherwise come across.

TIPS FOR SURVIVING A KITCHEN REMODEL

emodeling your kitchen can be a daunting task, but with some careful planning, you can make the process much smoother. ere are some tips to help you survive a kitchen remodel.

HAVE A PRE-CONSTRUCTION MEETING efore construction begins, hold a pre construction meeting to review details such as parking arrangements, work hours,

site protection, and schedule updates. y addressing these logistics upfront, you can minimi e unassumed e pectations and ensure e cient communication throughout the project. lso, setting up weekly meeting times allows for regular updates and progress reports, keeping you informed and involved in the remodeling process.

SET UP A TEMPORARY KITCHEN uring a kitchen remodel, your regular cooking space will be out of commission. To ensure that you can still prepare meals and keep some resemblance of a daily routine, set up a temporary kitchen in another part of your home. Identify a sink area in a bathroom, or even set up a temporary sink location reusing your old kitchen parts. ollect a few essential items like a cutting board, knives, pots, pans, and utensils. y having these available, you can continue to cook without too much disruption. dditionally, plan your meals around alternative cooking appliances such as microwaves, toaster ovens, and hot plates. 4 while your main kitchen is under construction. It’s a good idea to have a meal plan in place so that you can e ciently use these appliances and minimize the need for eating out.

ALTERNATIVE COOKING OPTIONS If weather permits, consider using a grill for outdoor cooking. Grilling can be a fun and delicious way to prepare meals while your kitchen is being remodeled. It allows you to enjoy the outdoors and still have hot, home58 | www.bestofburlingtonvt.com

cooked meals. While you might initially underestimate the impact of not having access to your kitchen for a couple of months, or of having workers frequently present in your home, the reality could be more disruptive than you anticipate. The noise, dust, and general inconvenience can quickly become overwhelming. Consider the option of taking a short vacation or temporarily relocating while your home undergoes remodeling. This not

only provides you with a chance to escape the disruption caused by the construction work, but also allows the contractors to proceed with their tasks unhindered, thereby expediting the overall process. It’s crucial, however, to discuss the timing of your absence with your contractor. Ensuring all pivotal decisions are made before your departure will allow you to fully relax and enjoy your vacation. Remember, starting a remodel can be

overwhelming. But with proper preparation and the right professionals by your side, you can turn your dream project into a reality. So go ahead, take that wall down and create the kitchen of your dreams!

Year-round fun in the water

How Allen Pools and Spas is changing the way we think of wintertime relaxation

M

ost people think of pools as a summertime luxury, and any at-home water body goes out-ofmind for the winter. That doesn’t always have to be the situation, however. Allen Pools and Spas is making the case that people should be able to enjoy the water all year round.

ENJOYING WARM-WEATHER FUN IN THE WINTER Allen Pools and Spas began as Allen Engineering in . an llen r.’s first time dabbling in the industry was at the Tamarack otch irl cout amp, where he built his first pool. The company took off from there, but he didn’t get interested in hot tubs for another 16 years. t first, they built them similarly to the construction of a pool, with an external heater attached to the feature. To supplement the company’s income through the winter, Allen started selling ski equipment to make ends meet. In 1986, they reached the business model they still operate under today: one that includes the sale of Hot Spring Spas. ot pring pas come in different models and price points. The temperature in the hot tubs can go down to 90 degrees for a cool splash in the summer, or stay at the typical 102 to 104 degrees for optimal therapy and relaxation. Allen Pools and Spas also sells Endless Pools: a self-contained heated pool with a swim current, which can be used 9 to 12 months out of the year, rather than a typical three-month pool season. Those pools allow users to adjust the temperature based on the season and what they personally find comfortable. They include massage jets for people to relax, too. Sierra explained that because both the service and delivery teams are in-house, they get to help the customer through the entire process. That includes shopping, purchasing, installation, and even service—something Sierra calls a “full-circle buying experience.” “They are super dedicated to helping customers and getting people ‘into hot water,’” she joked. On top of that, though, the industry itself is just fun to work in. “Hot tubs are huge for health reasons and benefits, family time, stress relief, and relaxation,” Sierra said. “And it shows when our employees talk to our customers about our products. RISING TO THE OCCASION Much the way their bread is allowed to age and proof before baking, it took time for the bakery to grow. “The three Klingebiel owners; a CPA, a GE

manager, and a dentist (Judy, Dave, and Ed Klingebiel, respectively), licensed the recipes, sourdough starter, and bakery knowhow from world renowned bakers Michael and endy ondon, ave said. “ rom an empty telephone truck repair facility, the bakery was built from scratch, including a 21-ton special rench bakery oven. It did not take long for Klinger’s to take

covid, ave said. They look forward to a brighter future, though, especially once they can find and train the help they need. “ ta ng has forced us to scale down and the sentiment is that we could, at this time, increase our business once sta ng reaches an adequate level, said ean Taberman, wholesale operations manager for linger’s read ompany.

BETTER WITH AGE In the meantime, the business is still thriving, thanks in part to the sourdough starter that’s off, in part because the owners understood how important it was to stay true to their philosophy, which centers around ensuring the highest quality possible in their bakery. “ ur philosophy on bread baking is to produce all natural, handmade products using a unique sourdough starter and no additives or preservatives. ave said. aintaining that philosophy has been key to linger’s success, but one of the major turning points in the history of linger’s resulted in a quick e pansion. “ erhaps the most significant turning point was evolving from strictly retail, to a combination of retail and wholesale operations, ave said. The bakery has not made it years without some di culty, however. They are e periencing the lasting effects of the I pandemic. “ ike most places, we’ve been struggling with sta ng since WINTER 2023/2024 | Best of Burlington | 77

used in 70% of the breads made at Klinger’s. While it is one piece of what gives their products its character, there is more to their excellent breads than just the starter. Dave said that part of what makes the bakery’s approach to bread making unique is “allowing each loaf to ‘age’ or proof prior to baking, along with a tactile approach to shaping each individual loaf by the hands of our skilled bakers. ike fine wines, a good dough ages in order to bring out the best in taste and texture.” ust like fine wines have their terroir, one of the greatest appeals to Klinger’s Bread Company is the unique character that the sourdough starter brings to the table. It’s one of the reasons why their breads are their most popular offerings, though they have a lot more to offer than just breads. “Our sourdough is our top produced

item, and others that we are known for specifically are the ewish rye and challah. ur croissants are also renowned for being some of, if not the best offered in our area. s with all our products, what makes them special is the consistent level of quality our staff is dedicated to putting into our product, combined with quality ingredients and no artificial additives, ave said. hen asked what the favorite item in the bakery is, ave was hesitant to name just one everyone in the bakery has a different favorite. “ ith a staff of over people, there are many rotating favorite items in the building, he said. hen everything in the bakery is someone’s favorite, that just means more love goes into each item “ eing that each loaf is handmade, each one gets the favorite treatment, he said.

GROWING ITS BUSINESS s they look to the future, they hope to continue to grow, but at a manageable pace. “ t the moment our plan for the future is to continue to grow sales incrementally, and bring the quality product that our loyal customers have come to know and love to more markets in the northeast, ave said. Even if you’re not in the outh urlington area, you can still find linger’s baked goods. They are widely distributed in grocery stores in the ermont area, and they are also available online. “To see the variety of our offered products, check our website, klingersbread.com, or visit a growing number of grocery stores in the ermont area including, but not limited to, annafords, haws, and many major co ops and specialty food stores, ave said. linger’s is now celebrating three decades of sweet success, but they plan to be around for many more, as they continue to take the finest ingredients, hand shape the loaves, and bake them with care in their ton rench brick oven.

ADDRESSING MORE THAN EDUCATION was founded in . It’s one of seven ead tart programs in ermont. hamplain alley ead tart’s early childhood education and family services are part of the hamplain alley ce of Economic pportunity E , a human services agency. That term, “human services is truly all encompassing when it comes to . Typically, people think of ead tart programs as a sort of pre enrichment, but goes far beyond that. hristine illiam, the associate director at , said it’s all about accessibility. “It’s not just about the education of the children, hristine e plained. he

believes that since parents are their kids’ first teachers, it’s important to remove obstacles that could affect both the children and parents’ well-being. That’s why helps with would be obstacles like food insecurity, homelessness, childcare, and more. “If we can help support families to overcome those obstacles in their lives, then they can be more present for their child, who would then be more present in school and just have a path of furthering their own education and well being as they age.” offers things like prenatal care for mothers, care for infants and toddlers, support for children with special needs as well as their families , mental health and wellness counseling, assistance with food insecurity, health services, assistance with housing challenges, and more. ight now, there are children and family members across four counties who can participate in CVHS. “ aving that early intervention for the whole family is key, hristine said.

given the option to pick up at a CVHS site or opt for home delivery. Christine said early childhood education is the foundation of a child’s entire life. That education encourages children to be curious and persistent—to be lifelong learners. They teach parents to be leaders and advocates, speaking up for what they and their children need. They’re already able to see the success of their work: Khari Garvin, the director of the ce of ead tart, went through a Head Start program himself. Parents have come back to CVHS to tell Sandra and Christine about how their work on the CVHS Policy Council led them to involvement with other boards and community leadership roles. “It’s just really a rming, andra said.

WORKING FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES Sandra didn’t always see herself working in this field. She went to college for interior design and then switched her major to early education and psychology, first working as a teacher and director in the private sector then joining CVHS as a supervisor in 2004. Now, she said she loves the organization and the dynamic between the people involved in it.

“It’s just such a phenomenal group of people all in the same mission of caring for children and families and our community and making the world a better place.” Christine, in contrast, said she knew in the sixth grade that she wanted to work with children and families. “It’s just such a fulfilling place to be. Every day is different, but just the impact that we all can have on one another in our community is what means the most to me,” Christine said. If you’re interested in getting involved, you’re in luck: CVHS is hiring. Like everywhere else across the nation, they’re struggling with a shortage of teachers. They’re offering hiring bonuses for teachers, and they’re hoping to fill positions quickly so they can offer more services to families.
