THE MAYOR OF BELFAST WELCOMES YOU... Welcome to Belfast Pride 2018, the biggest, brightest Festival in our City’s Calendar. The annual Belfast Pride Festival attracts thousands upon thousands of people to the many festival events, culminating into a resounding demonstration of empowerment and strength in the Belfast Pride Parade. As the newly elected Lord Mayor of Belfast the rights of citizens will take centre stage in my year of office, embodied in my theme of ‘Equality, Empowerment & Prosperity’. These are ambitions that complement the ethos of Belfast Pride. Belfast City Council is working to create a City of Equals where everyone is treated with respect and is empowered to be the very best that they can be. It is only through equality and empowerment that we can achieve true prosperity for all citizens. The LGBT community massively enrich the social and economic fabric of Belfast. They are part of the heartbeat of our city and how we address the issues and concerns that face them says a lot about the type of society we are. The voice of the LGBT community, and those in the wider community who have spoken up with them, continues to grow louder and louder. We look to you to help us realise our commitments as a City to finding a way through the remaining challenging issues facing the LGBT community in our society. The momentum for change is now. Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Deirdre Hargey

WELCOME TO BELFAST PRIDE FESTIVAL 2018! ‘Come Out for Change’ is the theme for Belfast Pride this year. Belfast Pride was founded by pioneers who defied attitudes that said we couldn’t have a Pride here and that we should know our place, 100 brave people marched in Belfast Pride in 1991. Today, in 2018, we are again a place apart, we have the lowest levels of Equality for LGBTQ+ people in Western Europe. We need to Come Out for Change and Belfast Pride is the place to make a stand. Belfast Pride is a protest and a celebration – we are treated as lesser than our fellow citizens and that needs to change now. The lack of Equality here is damaging lives and causing real hurt. There has been little or no progress on the issues that affect our community including Homophobia, Transphobia, Biphobia,

Gender Recognition Rights, Bullying and Inclusive RSE in schools, Fertility Rights, Mental Health, Marriage Equality and Prep access. We have the right to feel safe and to be ourselves in our own great city and to feel that we can stay here. We want to see more Hate Crime reported and dealt with. Belfast Pride is a celebration of LGBTQ+ lives and identities. Pride gives a unique feeling of support and affirmation that makes a real difference to the lives of LGBT+ people and gives encouragement to those who need support and acceptance. We need to banish the stigma that affects the mental health of so many LGBTQ+ people. Come out for change to Belfast Pride, celebrate your life, embrace your true self and share the positivity and acceptance. Seán Ó Néill Chair, Belfast Pride Festival 9
