Belfast Pride Festival Guide 2022

A MESSAGE FROM THE LORD MAYOR OF BELFAST...

Welcome to Belfast Pride 2022, the biggest, brightest festival in our City’s calendar. As the newly elected Lord Mayor of Belfast I am delighted you are joining us to celebrate our LGBTQ+ community. The Belfast Pride Festival 2022 will be the biggest ever, and I am looking forward to celebrating the return of Pride to our streets with all of you. The last two years have been difficult for so many in our City and beyond, not least of all due to our limited ability to celebrate and be together. Visibility is essential to increasing awareness of the key inequalities experienced by LGBTQ+ people in our City and to achieving full equality for all our citizens. There is no day in our City’s calendar which platforms LGBTQ+ people, organisations and issues more effectively than Belfast Pride. The LGBTQ+ community play a key role in making Belfast a forward thinking, diverse and equal society. Pride celebrates so much of what makes Belfast the city we all love - and is a resounding demonstration of the diversity and strength of the LGBTQ+ community and the people of Belfast. As a Council, we are keen to promote Belfast as a city of equals, where everyone feels welcome, respected and most importantly safe. Belfast Pride plays a pivotal role in making this vision a reality. As first citizen of Belfast, it is an honour to support Belfast Pride and I look forward to celebrating it with all of you. Happy Pride. Councillor Christina Black Lord Mayor of Belfast 3

WELCOME TO BELFAST PRIDE! Dear Friends, We are excited to bring you the Belfast Pride Festival Guide 2022 and the return to our in-person festival. The last two years have been difficult for us all, and it has served as a reminder of the importance of Pride and Community. Our team of volunteers have been working hard to bring you what we hope will be the BIGGEST and BEST Belfast Pride Festival ever. With the support of our partners, sponsors, stakeholders and community, we have organised a diverse festival with something for everyone. With over 100 events this represents the biggest Pride Festival Belfast has ever seen. As an organisation, Belfast Pride has undergone a period of substantial change to improve our governance and increase the openness and transparency of our work. We have registered Belfast Pride as a Company Limited by Guarantee, submitted our application to The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland,

and provided representation to sector organisations on our Board of Trustees, along with public recruitment of new Trustees and volunteers. We have also completed a community feedback survey and would like to thank the 1,130+ of you who responded to this. This feedback is important to help us develop the organisation and Festival that best represents our community. Throughout this year’s Festival and beyond, we will be continuing this process to ensure our community is at the heart of Belfast Pride. It has been a privilege to serve as Co-Chairs of Belfast Pride over the last few months and throughout the 2022 festival, and we would like to pay special tribute to all the Trustees, Festival Committee, and wider volunteers of Belfast Pride. As a volunteer led organisation this festival would not be possible without each and every one of you. Cara McCann Co-Chair

John O’Doherty Co-Chair 5

#PrideWithTheT

Fifty years ago, brave trans people stood up to police brutality, political indifference, and widespread hate. They stood alongside their lesbian, gay and bisexual friends and comrades, and said that enough was enough. Half a century on, and as the current custodians of the Pride movement that sprang from this uprising, we acknowledge our roots and stand on the shoulders of those brave pioneers. We are disgusted and appalled by the visceral hatred and intolerance being targeted at the trans community. Our Pride organisations are founded on a basis of respect, and we demand that all who come to Pride share our commitment to the equality and human rights of everyone in the LGBTI community. Those who oppose equality and respect for any section of our community are as unwelcome at Pride as those who oppose equality and respect for every section of our community. We say again that enough is enough. We are proud to be part of this great movement, and we affirm that our Prides stand firmly With The T.

While we celebrate the success of the campaign for marriage equality in Northern Ireland we cannot forget the many inequalities our community face. Stumbling around Northern Ireland and driven by a foggy aesthetic, Audrey Gillespie invites the viewer to submerge into a world of personal bleared emotions centred around lesbianism, alt-cultures and grief. This intimate series, presents the visual narrative of queer female anger and identity while pairing fleeting moments of youth, embrace and liberation together to create tender environments with an often bitter aftertaste.

Each year the UK Armed Forces encourages people to join and bring their whole selves to work, including their gender and sexuality. This has not always been the case.

2022 - LGBT Veterans Independent Review Launches The UK Government committed through the Veterans’ Strategy Action Plan 2022-2024 to understand and address the impact the ban had on LGBT personel. The LGBT Veterans Independent Review has been set up to examine the impact of the 1967 to 2000 ban on homosexuality in the UK Armed forces. The Review will seek to better understand the experiences of LGBT individuals who served in the Armed Forces from 1967 to 2000 and will provide recommendations to Government on how to address this historic hurt. If you or someone you know were impacted by the ban, head to our page on gov.uk to find out how you can help.

2000 - UK Armed Forces homosexuality ban lifted The UK Government accepted this policy was wrong. Before 2000, it was policy that homosexuality was deemed incompatible with service in the UK Armed Forces. Homosexual acts were described in the Army Act 1955, the Air Force Act 1955 and the Naval Discipline Act 1957 stating personnel would be found guilty under “any disgraceful conduct of a cruel, indecent and unnatural kind” or “any conduct … to the prejudice of good order and …discipline”. /company/LGBTVetReview This caused members of the LGBT community to face discharge and an end to their military careers.

1967 - Sexual Offences Act
