There’s something about this place...

Your Story: Meet the Kobbe Family The Kobbe family – Vince, Heather, Michael, Owen, and Brady – moved to San Antonio in September 2010 and didn’t know anyone. Their first experience with the Barshop JCC was when their oldest child, Michael, enrolled in the Block & Dreeben School for Young Children. While he was old enough to start kindergarten, their move put them in San Antonio after the school year had already begun. As a result, Vince and Heather decided another year of pre-kindergarten was just the ticket. Their experience couldn’t have been better. Michael loved the program, and Vince and Heather felt comfortable dropping their son off, knowing he was in a safe and nurturing environment. As a result, Owen and Brady, who are twins, also enrolled in the Early Childhood program at the J for two years. The Kobbes have participated in just about every program the J has to offer. The boys have all participated in many of the camps and most of the sports programs. They are enrolled at the Eleanor Kolitz Hebrew Language Academy (EKHLA), participate in the Judaics After School (JAS) program, and are involved in the Kid’s Club after school program. Kid’s Club is an after school program that offers youth in kindergarten through fifth grade the opportunity to develop new interests while challenging their minds and bodies. With involvement in so many different programs, it seems nearly impossible to choose a favorite. But if they HAD to choose, it would probably be the sports programs, primarily because Michael, Owen and Brady all have an inherent need to compete, and sports affords them that opportunity in a healthy and fun environment. In addition to providing an outlet for their boys to live active and involved lifestyles, Vince and Heather have also found joy in their membership. When they first moved here, they were in search of a supportive community, something the J has fulfilled. “Some of the best people we have met in San Antonio are due to our association with the J,” stated Heather.

Our best source of advertising is you – our members! We encourage you to share your positive JCC experiences with your friends and colleagues through conversation on Facebook, Twitter, email, text, or however you prefer to communicate. To provide you with a little thanks and incentive, we are continuing our “Member Get a Member” initiative. It’s truly a win-win for you and your friends and family members. Anytime you refer someone who joins the JCC, you can earn up to ONE FREE MONTH of dues! The new Member you refer will also benefit by saving on their enrollment fees. It’s a winwin for you both. Think about your family and friends who you know could benefit from being a member and how fun it would be to share your JCC with them. Visit www.jccsanantonio.org/mgm to download a referral card, fill it out and bring it to the JCC on your next visit. For more details, call 210-3026870.

May is a Great Time to Introduce Your Friends to the J! • May Membership Special: Save up to $75 on JCC Membership Enrollment Fee! • Call 210-302-6870 for details.

And it’s not just the people they have enjoyed! The building itself is impressive. Heather noted, “It’s so big and well maintained. I remember coming soon after the floors had been redone, and they were so shiny!” Heather, Vince, Michael, Owen and Brady all agree – there is something about this place that makes all of them smile. Kobbe family – we are glad that the J was there for you when you moved to San Antonio, and continues to offer each of you ample opportunities to Live Up.

JCCA Conference 2015 Five JCC staff members attended the JCCs of North America Professional Conference in March. The Professional Conference offers attendees four days of learning from expert presenters and the opportunity to share ideas with other JCC professionals. “I truly value the time I was able to spend with other JCC Professionals getting ideas, feedback and sharing information,” Ross said. The conference offered keynote sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities, along with job track sessions geared toward professional work areas. Representing the Barshop JCC at the Conference were (L-R): Lauren Ross (Vice President/COO), Alissa Levey Baugh (Director of Early Childhood Services), Maya Siler (Coordinator of Adult/Senior Adult Services), Rachel Rustin (Director of Jewish Journeys) and Tami MacKenzie (Vice President/CFO).

With ‘A New Spin On’, you can do both at the same time. Enjoy a lively lecture and a Spin class at the same time. Yep, you read that right. RUMORS

When the Sheldon Vexler Theatre opened its doors in 1999, they did so with Neil Simon’s side-(andback)-splitting farce Rumors. The comedy was well-received and set the standard for the caliber of performance one has grown to expect at The Vex. As the sixteenth season comes to a close, The Vex has decided to revive that inaugural production. This one, however, will include an all new cast, director, set, costumes, and both new and old patrons alike. At a large, tastefully appointed Sneden’s Landing townhouse, the Deputy Mayor of New York has just shot himself. Though only a flesh wound, four couples are about to experience a severe attack of Farce. Gathering for their tenth wedding anniversary, the host lies bleeding in the other room and his wife is nowhere in sight. His lawyer, Ken, and wife, Chris, must get “the story” straight before the other guests arrive. As the confusions and mis-communications mount, the evening spins off into classic farcical hilarity. Directed by Michael Burger, who has previously performed on The Vex stage in The Arabian Nights, Rumors features a cast of both Vex newcomers and veterans: Jared Stephens (Ken), Megan Van Dyke (Chris), Ben Scharff (Ernie), Lisa Fritschle (Cookie), Robert Gonzalez (Glenn), Chelsea Ortuno (Cassie), Scott Leibowitz (Lenny), Theresa Bishop (Claire), Carlos Alvarado (Officer Welch), and Erin Polewski (Officer Pudney). Oh – and rumor has it JCC President/CEO Saul Levenshus returns as the elusive Deputy Mayor. We would like to extend a special thank you to Rex Formal Wear for generously donating tuxedos that will be worn in Rumors. Rumors runs May 2 through May 31, with performances on Thursdays at 7:30pm, Saturdays at 8pm, and Sundays at 2:30pm. In observance of Shavuot, there will not be performances on Saturday, May 23 or Sunday, May 24. Please note: this production contains adult themes and language. Call The Vex Box Office at 210-302-6835 to reserve your seats. For more information about the production, visit www. vexler.org. We look forward to seeing you at The Vex!

Friends of the Vex gathered last month for a delightful reception, a special behind-the-scenes look at a Rumors rehearsal and a talk-back & “reader-theatre” exercise with Vex Artistic Director Ken Frazier! In addition to learning about the intricate workings of the theatre, the crowd was the first to hear the announcement of next season’s shows. Friends of The Vex believe that the audience experience at the Sheldon Vexler Theatre is unique, special and one-ofa-kind. The Friends of The Vex initiative helps support the theatre’s ability to continue to provide that “Vexperience”. 100% of every dollar contributed through the Friends of The Vex directly impacts The Vex’s continuing efforts to provide affordable, high quality, cutting edge theatre to our community. Be Good to Your *Guf: See You In Class by Anita Lemon I recently began teaching Pilates Mat Classes and Yoga Classes here at the Barshop JCC, and it has become an unexpected but joyful addition to my work. Some of us are lucky enough to discover our life’s work early on and some of us have to discover and develop it along the way. So even though I have always been interested in the human body, its movement potential, and the connection between mind and body, it has taken many different paths to arrive where I am today. If you have been in any of my class sessions, you might be surprised to find that a great deal of my experience is as a professional dancer, performing, choreographing, and touring, and utilizing areas like kinesiology, Laban movement studies, and conditioning techniques. Part of my background is also medical and health oriented, involving studies in anatomy, physiology, nursing, and community health. My Pilates experience began at age fourteen as a young scholarship student at the Houston Ballet Foundation, where learning the Pilates sequences and demonstrating them became required scholarship duties for several of us. It has been my privilege to continue to study with numerous teachers, along with serving a two year studio apprenticeship. I always say that Yoga found me after a shoulder injury during rehearsals, since I was sent to a Yoga instructor for rehabilitation. Investigating the Yoga postures, breathing techniques, meditation skills, and history began thirty years ago as a personal journey, but, of course, it wasn’t long before I found myself pressed into teaching Yoga and training others. Please realize I am condensing the work of fifty years, four university degrees, two registrations, three certifications, and a Fulbright award! Oh, yes, and several years spent as a flight attendant-it’s all valuable. Life has taught me that no experience goes to waste and we continue to learn and become better at what we do. Frequently, people note the march of letters and degrees behind my name and ask, “What do all those letters mean?” My standard reply is, “They mean I am very over educated for every job that G-d has called me to do!” “Your work is to discover your work, and with all your heart, give yourself to it.” Buddha *Guf is Hebrew for body.

Support the J – JCC Fore! the Kids Golf Classic Thanks to our committee, sponsors, golfers and contributors who have helped make this year’s Golf Classic another great success! Over 120 golfers participated in the JCC’s annual Golf Classic on Friday, May 1st. Why? Simple. To support youth and inclusion programs at the JCC. Each summer for the past 11 years an average of 20 elementary through high school aged youth with developmental disabilities has participated in our one of a kind inclusion program. We’ve purchased adaptive equipment, hired one on one advocates, and helped them create memories that will last a lifetime. The impact has been tremendous. This program has made a profound impact on our typical campers and staff as well. This is just one of many programs that our Golf Classic supports. The JCC offers year round youth programs from leagues to enrichment classes, after school care and so much more. You can learn about our full range of programs on our website at www.jccsanantonio.org, just click on the ‘Children & Family’ link. If you missed the opportunity to participate in our Golf Classic there are several ways you can still support these programs: • Become a youth league sponsor and get year round recognition on our ball fields, at the pool, tennis ourts or in the gym. Call Carisa Heiss at 302-6866 to learn more; • Make a tribute in memory, honor, or recognition of someone special to any number of funds that support youth programs. Youth and Camping tributes can be made via our website at www.jccsanantonio.org/tributes or by calling Carisa Heiss; • Spread the word. Our program participants are our greatest resources. Share information about our programs with your friends! Invite them to spend an afternoon at the pool, send them a link to our website, or refer them for membership through our ‘Member Get a Member’ campaign. To learn more about ‘Member Get a Member’ visit our Membership page on our website. • To learn more about our Golf Classic or ways to support JCC programs, call Carisa Heiss.
