Dear JCC Members,

Saul F. Levenshus

Stephen J. Kramer

On behalf of the JCC Board of Directors and our wonderful staff team, we are very pleased to bring you the 2014-15 edition of the JCC Directory. Once again our directory will put at your fingertips a vast amount of information about the JCC and our community including a listing of current members, business listings and MvP and Dine Around participants, local Jewish agencies, Shabbat candle lighting times, a schedule of holiday, JCC hours of operation and key staff contact information. You should also be aware that much of this information is also accessible when you visit our website at www.jccsanantonio.org. Our members remain our most important asset; and we’re glad you belong here. This annual Directory is one of the tools we use to keep you informed about what’s going on at the JCC. After all, this is “YOUR” JCC and regardless of whether you come for a workout or to see a show, whether you’ve been coming for weeks or years, you’ve probably come to realize that, there’s something about this place… The J is more than a building and its facilities – and more than a program or a pool. The J is You! It’s moms and dads, kids and seniors, art lovers and athletes. It’s our donors, staff and our volunteers. The J is the sum of all of the above. People who love the J have aspirations – to learn, to grow, to stay in shape, to put themselves and their families on the path to meaningful lives. As a home away from home, for many, the J is a place where you can live up to your aspirations, dreams, goals and potential. Whether one’s goals are as modest as swimming laps in a friendly, dynamic environment, or as ambitious as imparting values to one’s children, the J offers the ideal setting to live up to those goals. (continued on next page)

3

And the J is always on a quest to live up too. This past year we made a number of positive changes to our operations, facilities, programs and services in an effort to increase the value of your membership including:

• New chairs and umbrellas for the pool area.

• All new free weight and selectorized workout stations along with new cardio equipment, better spacing and an expanded stretching areas for the fitness center.

• A new workout station (Synergy 360) and new Spinning Bikes were added to the Training Studio.

• New flooring in the Conditioning Studio and Motor skills rooms.

• Several Wi-Fi hot spots are now available in the building including in the fitness center.

• We added new classroom furnishings in our early childhood classrooms and made upgrades to our school age playground area.

• And, we’re very excited about our new Tennis Clubhouse which features men’s and women’s dedicated bathrooms and changing areas, a reservation/check-in desk, staff offices, a lobby with casual seating and reception amenities as well as an outdoor deck where players can gather before and after they play.

There’s something about this place… from our nationally accredited Early Childhood and Summer J Camp programs, to our highly acclaimed Sheldon Vexler Theatre and Annual Jewish Film Festival “the JCC strives to inspire Jewish journeys while strengthening individual life, family unity and community involvement.” Our programs and services are designed to educate and enrich, to provide opportunities to strengthen our minds and bodies and to encourage our community to live healthy and well balanced lives. We hope you will enjoy the 2014-15 Directory; and that you will take advantage of the full array of diverse programs and services available to our members throughout the coming year. Thanks in advance for your continued support.

Sual F. Levenshus, President/CEO

On behalf of the Jewish Federation of San Antonio, it is our pleasure to send greetings and best wishes to all of the members and staff of the Barshop Jewish Community Center. Federation is proud to share a campus with a great Jewish Community Center that provides first-class programming all day, every day. It is wonderful for all who work in and frequent the Campus to enjoy the sights and sounds of young children, teens, and adults of every age and interest busy with activity in a Jewish setting. We enjoy an ever expanding, inter-relationship with the JCC and are proud of the impact that we and they, in partnership, continue to have on our community. The wide array of programming offered at the JCC is key to ensuring a vibrant Jewish community in San Antonio. Most people know the Federation through its annual campaign and community endowment, which help us provide funding for programs and projects here and overseas; in Israel and dozens of countries around the world. Wherever there are people in need, children who are hungry, seniors without medicine, or schools without necessary supplies, you will find the Federation system providing support, care, and aid. Anywhere another Jew needs help, we are there. Each year the Jewish Federation provides needed dollars to fund programs and services delivered at the JCC, Jewish Family Service, and other local, Jewish constituent agencies. We are funding scholarships for Jewish children to attend summer camp, formal and informal education opportunities, meals for seniors, and aid to the infirm. Our dollars help support special needs inclusion and trips to Israel for teens and young adults. This is a responsibility we have had for many years, and one we take seriously. Our San Antonio Jewish community counts on us. Federation’s relationship with the JCC has spanned generations and we know that it is the mutual respect and support we have for one another that continues to make it strong. May you continue to go from strength to strength. “It is not your duty to complete the task, but you are not free to avoid your part.” Pirke Avot 2:21, Ethics of the Fathers

MEMBER get a MEMBER A win-win you can share Our best source of advertising is you – our members! We encourage you to share your positive JCC experiences with your friends and colleagues through conversation on Facebook, Twitter, email, text, or however you prefer to communicate. To provide you with a little thanks and incentive, we are launching our new “Member Get a Member” initiative. It’s truly a win win for you and your friends and family members. Anytime you refer someone who joins the JCC, you can earn up to ONE FREE MONTH of dues! The new Member you refer will also benefit by saving on their enrollment fees. It’s a Win Win for you both. Think about all your family and friends who you know could benefit from being a member and how much more fun it would be to share your JCC with them. Visit www.jccsanantonio.org/mgm to download a referral card, fill it out and bring it to the JCC on your next visit. For more details, call 210-302-6820 and ask for Member Services.

Consider becoming a 2014/2015

Friend of

THE VEX Friend of THE VEX is an initiative designed to help support the ongoing efforts of the Sheldon Vexler Theatre (The Vex). Like most community theatres, The Vex experiences the “income gap” - the difference between what it costs to produce professional quality theatre and the amount of revenue generated from ticket sales. We are able to close the gap, in large part, thanks to gifts from individuals who value our style of intimate and provocative theatre. Please consider supporting our efforts and become a Friend of THE VEX. 100% of every contribution impacts The Vex’s continuing efforts to provide affordable, high quality, cutting edge theatre to our community.

For more information or to become a Friend of The Vex, visit www.jccsanantonio.org/FOV or call Carisa Heiss at 210-302-6866.
