For almost 40 years, KRTU 91.7FM has remained committed to supporting education, community and independent music. Since January 1976 Trinity University’s non-commercial education radio station, KRTU, has broadcast from the campus and successfully served San Antonio, it’s jazz fans, artists, and non-profit community. Collaborations with organizations across the city are now a hallmark of the station’s many partnerships and initiatives. This commitment is reflected in the station’s mission to be a resource of the Department of Communication that supports the academic curriculum while demonstrating Trinity University’s leadership in education and the arts.

Since the station’s beginnings in the 1970s, KRTU has grown in every capacity. The station’s signal has expanded from 10 watts of broadcast power to its current signal of 8900 watts. Additionally 91.7 FM is available in High Definition and streaming online at krtu.org. Over time the station has added production studios and student learning labs. Over the course of an academic school year over 75 Trinity students take on-air shifts and learn audio production. These courses are taught by KRTU staff, which has grown from two staff members to six. Station operation growth has greatly impacted KRTU’s capability to support the surrounding community. In 2012, then General Manager, Ron Nirenberg spearheaded A Year of Jazz. A campaign in celebration of KRTU’s 10 years of Jazz programming. This initiative solidified the station as a partner to the cities arts and non-profit community. In 2014 KRTU sponsored 43 events and hosted 24 separate concerts at The San Antonio Museum of Art, The McNay Art Museum, The Witte Museum, and Artpace for over 7,500 KRTU members and community attendees. KRTU values these relationships just as we value our partnership with the JCC. These organizations contribute greatly to their communities and to greater San Antonio. It is not only KRTU that values these partnerships, but also the station’s 1,565+ members and 45+ on-air community volunteers. As a non-profit, KRTU is member supported and our donors and volunteers contribute greatly to the station’s operation. They ensure the growth of KRTU to effectively produce highly engaging music programming and to remain an important resource to the greater San Antonio community.

Message From the President/CEO Saul F. Levenshus For those of you who take the time each month to read my message, I hope you will indulge me as I become a bit reflective. After nearly forty years as a JCC professional, I am still amazed at the sheer scope of services being offered each hour of each day here at the JCC. And when I consider what’s been accomplished since we moved to this Campus in 1999, the sense of pride that I feel is beyond explanation. Just look through this or any issue of the Center Peace, check out our J-Camp brochure, or come see a musical performance, a lecture, or a Sheldon Vexler Theatre production. Come by on any given Sunday and see the 300-plus children (and their families) engaged in sports activities, or any afternoon between 3-6pm and check out the 130 children in our afterschool care program, and the hundreds more engaged in tennis, swim clubs, soccer, basketball, or theatre programs. Stop by during the week and join the 30-plus seniors engaged in group exercise or enjoying a kosher lunch. How does it all happen? What makes all this possible? Well, there are several answers. The first and most obvious answer is you, our community of members and supporters. Thank you, we’re glad you belong here®, and we are thankful for your patronage and continued support. Thanks for being the audience, the participant, the sponsor, and the user. Your loyalty and belief in our work is the wind beneath our wings. We thrive on your smiles and we celebrate your satisfaction.

We thrive on your smiles and we celebrate your satisfaction.

We are also extremely fortunate to have an outstanding team of volunteer leaders whose commitment and dedication to the JCC and our community makes everything/anything possible. Volunteer hours are an essential ingredient which factors into the success of our ongoing programs and services. Hundreds of hours go into planning and preparing, into coaching kids’ leagues and building sets, into serving meals and chaperoning teens. Your pride in who we are and what we do not only makes us a success, it is our success. And lastly, but certainly never least, our JCC has the most amazing staff team I’ve ever been associated with. Now in our sixteenth year in this facility, staff continuity is one of our greatest assets, with many of our staff having served for ten, fifteen, and in some cases twenty years or more. No job too big, no task too small. Our staff are committed to success, loyal to one another and to you, our members. There’s something about this place… and it’s all of the above. In the next few days, we will begin the celebration of the holiday of Passover. We welcome the holiday in with our annual First Night Seder, which will once again serve nearly 150 community members and offers another great example of how we inspire Jewish Journeys. Everyone’s journey is different and unique, and every journey has a beginning and a destination. For some, it’s a workout, and others it’s a show. It could be a cooking class or a holiday celebration. Whatever your path is, we’re happy you’ve chosen to include us on your journey.

Your Story: Meet the Becker Family Before Kathy and Matt Becker and their two boys, Todd and Josh, moved to San Antonio from Pennsylvania last summer, they had already researched the Barshop JCC. In fact, they took a tour of the facility on their very first day in town! They were impressed with the facilities and the friendliness of all the people they met. As tours always do, the Becker family made a stop by the Sheldon Vexler Theatre where Artistic Director Ken Frazier and Production Manager Dylan Brainard were busily working on the set for the then-upcoming One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Todd and Josh played on the set while Kathy and Matt chatted with Ken and Dylan. This interaction was enough to impress Kathy; so much so that she auditioned for and was cast as Sally Talley in Talley’s Folly, which received rave reviews from critics and patrons alike.

There’s something about this place...

The Beckers have certainly enjoyed so much of what the J has to offer. Upon joining, the family attended the OPERA San Antonio event, where they won tickets to see the production of Fantastic Mr. Fox at the Tobin Center. Additionally, Kathy enjoys taking Pilates, Yoga, and NIA regularly. She credits these three classes with helping her prepare mentally and physically for the 97-minute marathon that was Talley’s Folly. The production was one act, which means no intermission, and with only two actors, there is little (if any) time to rest off-stage. As Kathy states, “performing a mentally and physically demanding role like this requires endurance, strength, and focus, all of which can be developed through classes like Yoga, Pilates, and NIA.” She even practiced her lines while running on the elliptical. (“Surely to the amusement of fellow members!” she adds.) When Kathy was recovering from a sprained ankle last fall, she took Fit 4 Life, a class that is designed specifically for moderately active seniors and focuses on strength, balance, flexibility, endurance, and promotes independence in aging. Because most exercises in Fit 4 Life are performed seated in a chair, this class is one that is great for anyone at any age going through rehab or in need of non-intense exercise. While Kathy may not regularly attend Fit 4 Life now, she does take the class any time her mother and mother-in-law are in town. She enjoys attending classes at the J, and notes that all of the instructors are knowledgeable and personable. The family enjoyed being able to visit the swimming pool in the fall, something they certainly couldn’t enjoy as easily in Pennsylvania. “It was quite a treat to be swimming in a heated outdoor pool while our Pennsylvania friends were dealing with dropping temperatures…” Kathy stated. Todd and Josh also had a great experience with Flag Football, where they made good friends and learned so much from their coaches and staff about the game and how to work as a team. Matt and Josh are also looking forward to participating in tennis clinics this spring. When she walks into the JCC, Kathy feels “energized and motivated. I know that no matter how I’m feeling or what kind of a day I’ve had so far, I’m going to walk out feeling better than I did before. It is a wonderful place to take care of your WHOLE self – mind, body, and spirit.” With their family membership and the everyone actively involved, there were times in the fall she would make three trips a day here: in the morning for a fitness class, the afternoon for the boys’ flag football practice, and in the evening for rehearsal at The Vex. “How wonderful to be able to do all of those activities under one roof!” She adds, “As a new San Antonio resident, I can’t imagine a better way to feel like part of the community than to join the JCC. There really is something about this place!” Kathy, Matt, Todd, and Josh – we are so glad that you have joined our family and that the JCC has been instrumental in acclimating you to a new city and new programs. We hope you continue to Live Up at the J!

Be Good to Your *Guf: Barre at the J By Roberta Varela-Hein Barre at the J is a great way to strengthen and tone your whole body. This is a fun, music driven, upbeat class using the ballet barre as the main tool. We meet in the Dance Studio; however, ballet or dance experience is not necessary. This small group training starts with a basic warm up, then goes to the barre for focused, small movement leg muscle strengthening and stretching. Your balance and body alignment can be improved as you make this a practice. The upper body, including your core, is also challenged with the use of hand weights and resistance bands and ball. You will be surprised with this class because it does not seem to be intense. But oh, the next day, you may ask yourself, “What happened? I was having fun, moving to the music, and now my thighs are reminding me I worked out!” Come back for another session. Attend consistently, and you will see improvements in your muscle tone and posture. Barre at the J is great for people new to strengthening exercises because the movements are small and simple. Many of the moves are different from those in other classes, since it’s the only one using the barre as part of the workout. This is an exciting choice if you want a change in your routine. Athletes – Barre focuses on balance, stretching, and toning of muscle groups, with the goal of preventing injury. I’m a master athlete and Barre training gives my total body more strength for endurance running and swimming. The core work of Barre class is amazing. The combination of exercises reminds me how body parts are connected and work with each other. That helps me move smoother and faster. Attention to alignment is important, and this class teaches you what to look for on your body to see that you are in line and standing straight. I encourage you to try out Barre at the J. It can be a great component to a healthy lifestyle for men and women of all ages. We meet Mondays and Wednesdays. I’ll see you at the Barre! Roberta Varela- Hein is a Licensed Professional Counselor at Jewish Family Service. She is certified in group fitness classes including Muscles in Motion, Yoga, Barre, and Fit For Life at the JCC. Roberta competes in running events, 5k to marathon, and long distance swimming events. *Hebrew for Body

The Early Childhood Department will be CLOSED on Friday, April 10 (Passover) and Friday, April 24 (Battle of Flowers). Passover Experience

This program is designed to go beyond the usual model Seder, by creating a hands-on, affective experience of the Passover story. Groups of children will go through stations that represent the experience of the Israelites in the Exodus. They will eat symbolic foods, and have a simulated experience with several of the plagues, including frogs, hail, darkness, and locusts. Moses and Pharaoh will be on hand to help make the story come to life. The Passover Experience will take place on Wednesday, April 8.

Process Not Product!

The Block and Dreeben School for Young Children offers a program for the young child designed to help each child develop as a unique, creative, and competent individual. Our program emphasizes learning through hands on experiences rather than teaching children by rote memorization or drill. We offer children a rich and stimulating environment where they can make discoveries with the help and guidance of adults trained in the field of child development and early education. We emphasize the process of learning and creativity rather than the product. Children learn about “reading, writing and arithmetic” plus much more as they play in a well planned and equipped classroom designed to meet their developing needs. Children are introduced to Jewish holidays, traditions, and values through an experiential approach, which promotes a developmentally appropriate understanding of the Jewish faith and culture. We have limited openings available for the 2015-2016 school-year which begins in June. Call 210-302-6846 for enrollment information.

Support the J – Friends of The Vex

Have you ever walked into a room or event or meeting expecting something to happen, then something completely different took place? And you liked it? Ken Frazier, Theatre Director at The Sheldon Vexler Theatre at the JCC, ‘The Vex’ has a tradition of taking a production and giving it an edge that takes us down a theatrical road we weren’t necessarily expecting. Whether it’s building a set that consists of a full size pool for Metamorphoses, or casting an all female cast for The Odd Couple, he has a way of maximizing your experience at The Vex. From costumes to sets, to the technicalities of a show, Ken takes every production to the next level. If you have attended a show at The Vex, you know. If you haven’t, you should. We know we are a bit biased, however since The Vex The opened its doors in August of 1999, the theatre has received over 100 awards through the Alamo Theatre Arts Council, from acting to directing to design to sound and more. So how you can help us help The Vex continue to make a positive difference in the local arts community? Consider being a ‘Friend of the Vex’. This campaign covers what is referred to as the ‘income gap.’ That is, the shortfall experienced each year as ticket sales are not enough to cover the true expense of running the theatre. Monies raised through the Friend of The Vex initiative directly impact The Vex’s ability to continue to provide such high quality theatre in our community. To learn more about the Friend of the Vex campaign, call Carisa at 210-302-6866 or visit www.jccsanantonio.org/ fov. We hope you will take advantage of this wonderful jewel we call The Vex; and when you attend shows here, we hope you will share your positive experiences with your Facebook friends, on twitter, or other social media. Our best form of advertising is through word of mouth from our attendees.
