he lastest meeting of the Neighbourhood Management Board (NMB) discussed the following items:

Matters Arising There will be a clean up Day on Webster Road Play area on 24 October between 9.30am and 4pm. All residents are welcome to come along! The Oxygen levels in the park lakes has risen and there have been no new avian deaths. Anita Robinson told the board that over 100 people attended and enjoyed the Japanese drummers at the park. Residents Network News Joy Vincent told the board that the trips to Twinlakes and Matlock were successful and that the fund raising would be continuing with the annual toy sale on 10 December at the Wellinger Way garage. NHS – Community Wellness Service Karen Pickering told the board that a new team member was needed. Some ideas for funding were a children’s dance group, hair and beauty. Grants of up to £250 are available. Community First Update The scheme is in its fourth year and is approaching the end with deadlines for submission being the end of September. Eight applications have been made in the last two months and it looks like all of the money will have been dispensed to community projects/groups. Transforming Communities Recommendations have been put forward to the scrutiny commission and presented to the City Mayor. At the moment, nothing has changed since the last board meeting. Tendering for the community centres will initially be offered to community groups with the hope that they will take over the buildings. Surestart Children’s Centres Angie Wright gave a brief overview of the changes to the centres and changes to their services. Upcoming Events Planning permission has been submitted by Naresh Parmer to implement changes to Braunstone Hall, including developments and a new access road. Dementia friendly walks are still taking place with the final one being on October 7. British Gas sent some of their workers to help clean up around the lake areas. On 8 October there will be a Braunstone Park Lakes clean up event, all are welcome, the Lord Mayor to attend to help. On the National Heritage Day 75 people turned up to hear talks about local history, given by the Braunstone History Group.

T

he Resnet has met a couple of times and are making plans for the future. We have been on training and are just about ready to start hosting our own website. The website will have information about anything and everything (hopefully) that is going on in the area. We have also planned their AGM which will be held on Tuesday 25th November at Summers Café from 1.30pm. Everyone is welcome to come along, new members are welcome too. The Resnet will be helping to bring a Christmas disco/party for 8 to 11 year olds on 5th December at the Oak Centre. The Braunstone Awards will be taking place at West End Working Men’s Club on Thursday 26th March, please get your nominations in quickly. Nomination forms can be found in this edition of the Alert. The Facebook group now has 232 members and it is used to spread the news of what is happening in the area, if you would like to join the group then search for Braunstone Residents Network group on Facebook. The garage sales have been performing really well and donations are always welcome, this year, these sales helped to pay for trips to Matlock & Twinlakes, the Awards night and many other small events. Please give us your suggestions for future trips out or other activities that you may think is a good idea. Finally the Christmas sale is on the 10th December and looks like it will be as successful one. Come along and get your Christmas gifts.

ince the last edition of the Alert, The TRI4James crew have been extremely busy fund-raising. For Vicky Williams, the sky was the limit as she bravely completed a sky dive jump and in the process she raised an amazing £1080. The children’s Braunstone Park one mile sponsored walk raised £1680, with top fund raisers on the day being sisters Sian and Alicia Grant who raised a whopping £167 (see picture on the Gallery Page), pipped to the post was Grace Andrews who raised a fab £165.00 for the TRI4James fund. Well done girls. The team TRI4James has been running crazy and in September, they successfully completed the Warwickshire triathlon. The team are now training harder than ever for the Leicester half marathon on October 26th. The 12 strong team of four women and eight men have been announced as Darren Liquorish, Brian Williams, Nicholas Elton, Daniel Reading, Luke Roberts, Gary Moore, David Tebbutt, Tony Cawley, Natalie Williams, Stacey Roberts, Natalie Stacey and Dawn Tobin. Also, Darren joins Leicester based company Ross Handling and their staff, who have decided to join forces to raise funds for TRI4James. They will be, on the 1st November, completing the ‘Wolf Run’, which is a ten mile race through assault terrain, as Darren told us ‘The words ‘Muddy Hell’ comes to mind’. Friday December 19th sees Mazzie’s Cafe 4th Christmas dinner! Traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings! Christmas pudding/brandy sauce/custard or mince pies for afters! Bingo! Helen who prides herself on getting the audience involved in the talks, showed photographs of what the Old Village used to look like- which lead to lots of discussion! Many of the visitors stating that they will be returning for the next talk, it was a huge success. The next History Group exhibition and talk is on Tuesday 25 November 10:00 am-12:30 pm at the stable block. Book your place in the talk early as seats fill up fast. The talk will be about Braunstone Park as a military camp during WWII. So why not ‘Come and see all about your Braunstone!’ – Helen Catterwell

Farewell to our Alan Chapman

W

e are all sad to hear of the death of Alan Chapman in October, all at b-inspired, b-connected and the Braunstone Residents Network offer their sincere condolences to Alan’s family at this sad time. “Alan was an inspiration to so many, kind hearted, giving and loving with a wealth of knowledge and experience, he lit up the room and despite losing people he loved he continued to smile, one of the last things he said to me was that he couldn’t wait for the next 90 years, as he had so much to do! Alan, wherever you are, don’t stop telling those terrible jokes and enjoy kissing all the girls x”. Ali Gamble “We were very sad to hear of the death of Alan. He was a kind, intelligent and community spirited man. Alan was very interested in history and was a very valued member of the Braunstone History Group. He loved to tell us about his time in the RAF and about his dad’s time in army in WWI. He would always offer to research something for the group. He will be missed greatly by our group and will always be remembered with love and Respect”. Helen Catterwell Chair of Braunstone History Group. “Alan Chapman, Well! What can I say, I have known Alan for 8 years and what a wonderful, kind and honest gentleman he was, he was a wonderful friend and nothing was too much trouble, love you always Alan”. Eilleen Gollings “It will be hard not to see your smiling face, you always had a story for us, we will miss you so much” Lizzie “Big hugs for you Alan, the most happy and lovely gentleman I knew. I loved being in your company at meetings and at the garage sale. I will miss you so much, especially on holidays at Skeggy. Love you forever”. Joy Vincent

tars & Angels will be running their Santa's grotto on the 1st to 23rd December, Monday to Friday, from 3-30pm to 5-00pm. Organisers Barry and Maria Sawbridge will be charging £1 to see Santa and there will be a free gift, and a chance to have your photo taken with Santa, also at £1. This year Barry and Maria are doing something different, they will be touring the streets of Braunstone with Santa's sleigh, (similar to the fire service), with collection tins and Santa's little helpers. This will be running throughout December every Monday to Friday from 5-30pm to 7-30pm. But that's not all folks, Barry and Maria will be hosting their annual event at the Co-op on Hallam Crescent on Saturday December 13th.

As always all funds raised will go to Heart Research UK. They told told the Alert team “with the generous help of the Braunstone community we would love to beat last year's total of £1,309”. We at the Alert wish them all the best in their fund-raising. Barry & Maria

News From Braunstone Fishing Club The fishing day event was a great success, this was a chance for Braunstone fishing club members to meet and chat. The weather conditions were fair, but the fish weren't feeding very well. Club members used maggots and boilies, the anglers used various methods for example; float fishing, ledgering etc. Their wasn't much of a catch two members pulled out a couple of nice common carp in good condition. All in all, it was a great day and everyone enjoyed it and it was well organised by the clubs head bailiff Stephen Halford. Next season we will be holding junior coaching sessions, if you are 12-16 come and join our Junior Club in January 2015. Watch this space for up and coming events and news. Elaine Halford.

aul Runesha is a local man with a vision to improve children’s learning to broaden their Maths and English skills along with enhancing their selfconfidence in his Think Ahead Plus project. Paul, runs a club for children aged 8 – 16 to help with their SATS and their GCSE exams. Think Ahead Plus uses a unique combination of extra maths tuition and outdoor activity in the summer to enhance children lives. Paul explained the philosophy behind the project is ‘we all have eyes to look at a problem, but we need to use our eyes to look for the solution’. Paul, who has help from two parent volunteers, believes that clear communication with parents is key to a child’s learning. Sessions take place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Oak Centre 4:30 – 6:00pm. Think Ahead Plus asks for a contribution of £5.00 a session to put towards running costs. If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions about Think Ahead Plus please contact Paul on email: paulrunesha@yahoo.co.uk or by phone: 07508809578 or check out the website at www.thinkaheadplus.org By Charlotte and Maureen.

Tim Stevens, the Bishop of Leicester, came to visit St Peter’s on Sunday October 5th to confirm 5 people from local churches – part of his visit to the “West Leicester Mission Partnership”. Whatever your views are on war and peace, this is a chance to remember those who lost their lives in all the conflicts of the 20th Century, and pray for peace in the 21st Century. After the Communion, there will be a short act of Remembrance at approx 11am. A chance to come and remember your loved ones who’ve died recently (or not so recently) – light a candle, say some, quiet prayers... and have a cuppa and a chat afterwards. Chris Burch

Congratulations The Alert would like to say a huge well done to all the students and staff at Fullhurst. Their record GCSE exam results for 2014 has seen the school raised to second place in the city for ‘Value Added’. Keep up with the good work folks.

Police News

W

ith the nights drawing in, I would like to remind residents of some simple crime prevention ideas to adopt. ● Use light timers to make your home appear occupied; ● use exterior security lighting. ● lock all doors and windows when you go to bed,. ● make sure expensive items can not be seen through the windows. ● Report, immediately, people acting suspiciously near your home ● If you believe there are local homes which are vulnerable, then please contact us. ● Remember not to leave empty boxes in the street, this highlights what is in your property making it tempting for burglars. ● If you have presents wrapped keep them out of sight in a secure location and away from windows. Tackling issues of nuisance motorbikes on Bendbow Rise remains a priority for us. I would encourage anyone to come forward in confidence if you have any information. You can report incidents in various ways either by reporting it to a local officer at Braunstone police station, calling 101 or by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. It is a good idea to register your belongings on the free national database, immobilise.com. This allows the police to trace the rightful owners if an item is recovered after being lost or stolen. If you do not have access to the internet or would like some help in registering your items please do not hesitate to contact the local policing team. Following the above crime prevention advice will help to make you have a safe and happy Christmas. If you need any advice or help over the festive period, the please contact us. You can visit us at Braunstone police station, follow us on our twitter page (@LPRowleyfields) or via our force website (www.leics.police.uk). From all the team we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. Police Sergeant Siobhan Gorman.

Dear Alert, I felt I needed to complement b-connected after the tea party. The tenants at Sandyhurst really enjoyed the afternoon, some caught up with old friends that they had not seen in a while some others whom don’t usually venture out of there flats had a marvellous time. I also managed to make some more connections with another services provider which Sandyhurst tenants can get involved in, so a great day was had by all. Keep up the good work, it just proves what a valuable service you all provide within the community of Braunstone. Kind Regards Sharon (Sandyhurst Manager ) Dear Alert I would just like to write a few words in memory of my dear friend ‘Bobby Dudman’. What a wonderful, brave and determined lady she was, she wanted to do and go everywhere with me, when we first lived near each other. She loved all the bus trips and to go to the b-connected Tea Parties. The last couple of years, Bobby was very poorly, but you could not stop her from going to town, or Iceland. She loved to take her lovely dog, Rosie, for walks, she pushed herself to do it. When she could not go so far, we used to have tea and lemon splits. I miss her for making my rice puddings and crumbles. Bobby was a brilliant cook, and every afternoon we would have tea and sit for a couple of hours putting the world to rights. We had so many laughs. I still can not believe she is not with us. I miss her so very much. Sleep peacefully Bobbie x Also I would like to remember Alan Chapman, who was a gentleman and a very good friend to me. If it was not for Alan, I would not be able to go about as I do. Many thanks and much love to you. R.I.P Alan x Ann Regan
